Wiggins scores season-best 31 points, Warriors beat Clippers
"Kawhi Leonard and Paul George were absent due to injuries and without them the warrior steamrolled the clippers beating LA one 24 one O 7. Andrew Wiggins made 6 threes and led Golden State with 31 points. Every game is going to be different. Steph's going to be stuff. Always. But tonight, the ball was moving to find a lot of people. And made some shots. Stefan curry added 22 points and Klay Thompson scored 15 of his 18 points in the first quarter. The clippers only scored 18 points in the second quarter and trailed by 29 points in the final period. In the loss, Marcus Moore senior with 19 points. Ryan leong, San Francisco

"For the fourth time in 8 years the Golden State Warriors are NBA champions after beating the Boston Celtics one O three to 90 in game 6 Stephen Curry led the way with 34 points Andrew Wiggins scored 18 and draymond green amassed 12 points 12 rebounds and 8 assists Curry earned his first NBA Finals MVP award after averaging 31.2 points in the series Boston trim golden states 22 point lead to 8 in the fourth quarter but couldn't come any closer Jaylen brown's court 34 while Jayson Tatum had 13 for the Celtics who fell short of their first title since 2008 Geffen kobach

"Now. Is that because the warriors have figured something out and the Celtics are just too tired and too broken in terms of the warriors have cracked the code or was it just a really off night for a lot of guys and they're going to come roaring back and we're going to go to 7. To me right now in this moment after sitting down with Andrew Wiggins and knowing by the way that Steph Curry is going to want to avenge that three list game 5 that he had, I may give.

"Because yeah, draymond green, Klay Thompson, Steph Curry, infinitely better at talking about Andrew Wiggins and Andrew Wiggins. He's not the guy that's going to sit down in front of you and bang on his chest and tell you all about how we did it and why he did it and how he's the baddest mother bleeper that's ever walked around the damn town. But he is. There is a conversation to be had and you know, I think Steph in his amazing game for performance, if it comes down to it and the warriors win it all, I expect Steph Curry to be MVP. But one more incredible staff performance will turn that conversation into Steph just came up there and wholeheartedly 100% took and earned that MVP and if he doesn't have that one more game, there will be somebody somewhere, maybe it's.

"Come on now. Come on. So that part, I mean, so a couple of things that you mentioned that I need to dive into their number one, yes, he is the anti draymond as a persona. You've interviewed both of them. He is the opposite in terms of that sort of charisma. That's fair to say. Yes. But in terms of performance on the court, he has been the anti draymond in a more positive sense for Andrew any more negative sense for draymond. He has been the second best player on this team behind Steph and in game 5 when everything was on the line and the series is hanging in the balance Andrew Wiggins is the best player on the court. Wiggins drives through the lane puts it up with a right hand good Andrew Wiggins can do no wrong tonight with 22 points and 11 boards. Here's Wiggins using a screen to get three drives the lane and flushes with the right hand. 26 for Andrew Wiggins in game 5. The part of that that I find so funny is that when they made this trade for him, Andrew Wiggins 26 year old, 6 foot 7 wing, former number one overall pick at a Kansas and 20 14s incredible athlete. When they trade for him, Malika, back in February of 2020, literally nobody was like the NBA Finals is where this is gonna pay off. Literally no one was like this person is going to be a steadfast for the warriors. He was seen as a trade piece. Oh, where is Andrew Wiggins going to go? Who are they going to package him for? How are they going to make room with him as part of that deal? That was the discussion around Andrew Wiggins. And now, also diplomatically, he answered my question about, at the end of June, he's going to be eligible for the warriors to offer an extension. And he correctly and rightfully deferred to his agents, but then at the end, slipped in and hopefully I'm still a warrior because you have to remember that this is a guy for his first 6 seasons in the NBA. He had four different head coaches. There was no stability for him. And so, you know, as much as we look at all of the things that didn't come to fruition for Andrew Wiggins. You also have to look at the circumstances. What the warriors have done has been give him a foundation, a home base. Something reliable because he didn't necessarily have that. And I haven't interviewed Andrew Wiggins as much as I've interviewed many other players. I'm not going to pretend that I'm the Andrew Wiggins expert and I know him incredibly well, but I do know that he seems to have found a fit that and he feels that fit with Golden State because man, he's playing like it. And he has gotten the toughest defensive assignment in every series. So to refresh people's memories, Malika, because you've been there the whole way, right? Like Gary paid in the second, fractures his elbow against the grizzlies, and that is the guy who gets that assignment. Andrew Wiggins was not the guy that people said, you need to go shut down Luka Dončić or slow him down. However you can. But he is the, he was the only option and now he is the right answer to that question. Yeah, he slowed down Luka Dončić. He is made it so that Jayson Tatum, this blew my mind today. Jason Tatum has not even attempted a dunk in this series. And I know that that is fatigue. I imagine because the Celtics have had a tough path here. But part of it's Andrew Wiggins. Andrew Wiggins has elevated to once again, you know what? His new nickname? Mister, I told you so. Oh. He is mister. I told you so. Some people are whatever. Mister steal your girl, mister fab, he's mister. I told you so. You doubted me, and now shame on you. Yes, yes. Oh my God. I mean, what he did. I mean, he basically said that physically when he dunked on Luca. Brunson snaps it outside the Wiggins. Goes by pull. Wow. Oh my goodness. I've got to see this again. Can you describe what that looked like? Just because I want people to appreciate in this audio medium, what it was that happened. Everyone jumped off their couch. It was it looked like he talked his Vince Carter, you know, captain dunk talks oftentimes about when you talk back too far, sometimes that's when you can't quite get it down. And you've seen that with some of John morant's most incredible misses. He cocked back too far and slammed it down too hard and it was like, yo, this dude has no business throwing it down on a multiple time first team all MBA or someone who I think we can already probably say Luka Dončić. Yeah, Hall of Fame. No doubt. Going to be an MVP of this league will be an MBA champion at some point. This quote unquote soft dude just did that to Luca. What? And yet, it's starting to make sense. But that's me catching myself. See, that just the puzzle of Andrew Wiggins. You just remembered the branding that you just bestowed upon him Randy that he would never unilaterally declare about himself given his personality. And yeah, he can dunk, but the idea that he's coming through in these giant clutch moments on the biggest stage possible, that's the difference. And so after the break, Malika, I do want to close the loop on mister I told you so. And then I want to figure out what exactly the Boston Celtics are thinking about as everything seems to be falling apart around them. New business, no problem. Success starts with Intuit QuickBooks, learn more at QuickBooks dot com. QuickBooks payroll, QuickBooks payments, and QuickBooks online account required. You know, the thing about his persona too is that when I watch these games, like Andrew Wiggins, as you said, he is restrained, deliberately, conspicuously not bothered by any of this, but it feels like when he does stuff that is, that is mister posterized your star. His teammates don't seem to enjoy anything else in the world more than that. I think again, it's because of that dichotomy between his no nonsense exterior almost are you checked in? Are you checked out sort of facial expression? The disconnect between that and what he is doing on the floor. He's the guy who isn't going to celebrate himself, but he wants to celebrate everyone around him and they want to celebrate him in turn..

"Those are kind of the three words that comes to mind when I think of how to describe his performances. Much past quarter up top to Wiggins, squares hand in his face three. It's good. Ten straight points for the warriors. They have been exactly what the warriors needed at moments when maybe the warriors didn't even know that that's what they needed. Off the amount of Wiggins the contact throws it off the rim and gets the roll. Andrew Wiggins chance for three and four 49 to go. But I hate that I have to throw in the word surprising to this because yes, he was an all star starter, but still this sort of journey of Andrew Wiggins is somewhat unbelievable even to me someone who grew up in the Bay Area who has great trust in admiration in Steve Kerr's system has absolute respect for the veteran moves of Steph Curry and draymond green and Klay Thompson. Still, through all of that, I find myself being surprised when time and time again because here's the thing. When Andrew Wiggins had that just absolutely monster, not like a Steph Curry, you know, game four monstrous, but mantras in his own right. There was a part of me that said, well, is he playing above his head? Is he going to come back down to earth slightly and clay is playing below so is he going to come back up? Where is this all going to even an average out, right? And Andrew Wiggins just hasn't. He just hasn't. This is his, he's not playing it over his head. This is very much eye level for him to see him be a first time all star. I shouldn't be surprised in seeing him lock down a MBA first team member in Jayson Tatum. And yet I still am rubbing my eyes a little bit and saying, is it going to fall off? And I think finally, and I apologize to Andrew Wiggins for this after 5 games of it. I think he's earned that tip of the hat. This is who Andrew Wiggins really is in this moment in time. Yeah, I mean, the all star thing. I mean, that was something to be brushed off. Even by me, I'm also in this group of people pleading for forgiveness from the person you interviewed because that's a democratic thing, right? Like you can get voted into that, right? There's a popularity contest. The warriors got a lot of fans. But yeah, oh my gosh. Yeah, that's a separate episode. The rabbit hole of KPop affecting NBA voting and NBA rewards. But the rewards of the NBA Finals, Malika. I mean, you just spoke to the two way aspect of him, right? Like this is somebody when you looked at him, you saw for the longest time years and years and years in Minnesota, you saw a bust, a number one overall pick bust. Who had a criticism that was levied at him all of the time and I'm curious if we're thinking of the same adjective that people would use to denigrate Andrew Wiggins back in the day. Two. Soft and lazy. Those were the two that he sort of carried around with him fairly or unfairly for a long time. With those, what were you thinking of? That's it. I was going soft, but you brought in lazy, and I'm curious when you sat down with him, did you ask him about any of that and how does he feel about those labels? Yeah, so one of the first things that I asked him was first about the game, and then about shedding this label of soft. You were sort of slapped with the label as soft. How do you reflect on that now? No, I feel like when someone puts it out there, it's kind of, you know, perception is kind of reality, you know, type thing. He never tried to give it life. I never really gave it no life, you know, I felt that people around me for like real hoopers. They all know nothing soft about me. The people around him felt that those statements were inaccurate that that reputation was inaccurate, but once something like that starts to float, it often gets picked up and carried. And so he knows it, he saw it, he heard it. Obviously, famously, the interaction between him, his Minnesota Timberwolves teammates and Jimmy Butler, there's a lot that's been made of that, which is why I found it so interesting when draymond green told me the other day that one of the ways that he knew he would fit in on the warriors is when Tom thibodeau called him and said, you're going to love this guy. Tibbs was like, you guys are going to love him. He competes. He defends, and he was telling us Jimmy loved him. And we all know how Jimmy Butler is like, you got any softness to you, Jimmy, don't like you. That's just how Jimmy is cutting. He's continued to show that he's continuing to get better. He's taken on every challenge that we've thrown in front of him and it's huge and we need him to do that for one more win. He said, there is not an ounce of soft in him. He said, Jimmy Butler doesn't like guys who have an ounce of soft in him. And so if Jimmy has come around to liking the sky, that means he's someone I'm going to get along with. So I asked him if there's any sense of proving people wrong. That's always the motivation. When you hear stuff like that, you don't let it get to you. When you hear stuff like that, it is fuel. No, how could it not be in time thibodaux of course, the former coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves, the man you just referenced there a guy who does not who does not brook much softness from his players either. The thing about the label, right, is that there was a rooting in a reality. And the pejorative is where I think it's fair to dispute what is existentially soft or lazy about a guy who has achieved and worked so hard. Objectively to get to where he is. But when Malika, when you look at his resume and he is, was I should say to be very clear when he was one of the worst rebounders at his position at his size for so long when he was one of the most inefficient scorers a guy who seemed to not just not just take bad shots, but also be unbothered by the criticism of it. That's the other part of him that I find fascinating, right? I think that that's where the lazy label came in and I'm not so sure that came in accurately. The care factor, right? That's what it was. It does he care. There's a laissez-faire approach to his game, but even sitting across from him, he has this bashfully slow smile that sort of creeps across his face and moments when he's tickled, but he is, he told me, I'm not about that raw Ross stuff, and he just isn't. Now I'm not with all the, you know, the rah rah rah stuff, you know, I keep it simple. I play my defense. Listening to him talk, he wasn't the most animated interview that I've had in these finals. He wasn't the most boisterous player when you watch him on the court, but he's still doing it. He's still doing all the things the warriors need. And so I think maybe the label for him now should just be misunderstood because I'm not saying that, you know, one game, a reputation corrects, but to know what it takes on this level and to literally be in the conversation with Steph Curry for Finals MVP..

Curry comes up limping after mad scramble in Warriors loss
"For the second time in three games the warriors wasted a strong third quarter in losing to the Celtics this time one 16 100 The outcome gives Boston a two games to one lead in the NBA Finals and it could be a costly loss for Golden State after Steph Curry came up limping following a scramble for the ball with about three and a half minutes remaining Celtic center Al Horford rolled up on curry's leg and the all star played a few more seconds before coming out with three minutes left Teammate Andrew Wiggins hopes the injury isn't serious You just hoping he's okay That's

"And at one point it was really funny because Mark Jones asked on the telecast. If your gold state, what do you do? And God bless Mark Jackson, man. Because he just said execute. He literally left it at that. It Golden State scored on that play. He's like, see? So what'd I tell you? It's just like, okay, it's a lot easier said than done. And granted, Golden State will be able to score in Cannes score on Boston. They showed that early on when Steph had it rolling. There will be moments where they can get it rolling even when Steph maybe is not the impetus behind it. But it's going to be challenging. And I think it's going to be challenging for Jordan Poole. Maybe he needed kind of a feel out game. Just to really get his feet under him as a young guy as a guy that's never been on a stage like this before. And as a guy that is still growing into this role, you know, I think the assumption is that he's already made it. He's already that guy. And maybe he is, but this would be a really good moment to really solidify and prove that you are. So we'll see. There's a lot of questions and there's going to be a lot of pressure on stuff if somebody like pool or if we don't ever really see clay kind of look comfortable here, have a game where he's shooting at 50, 60% from the floor like we know he can do it. We can't wait till for game 6 clay here necessarily. It would be nice to be able to do that, but they're going to have to provide a little bit more offensive punch outside of stuff to see it, I think. Yeah, when Boston's defense is really dialed in, particularly when they're big and Steve Kerr had Andrew dala on the court, or even like Andrew Wiggins when rob Williams or Al Horford was on Andrew Wiggins, which is the first tactical move that he may made from the start that I think surprised a few people, they were ignoring Andrew Wiggins, and they're just like, all right, we're going to be in the paint and we're going to be very and Steph Curry had a couple of drives in the game where he just had nothing going in the paint where usually the floor is so spaced because of how gold and the state runs their offense..

First of all, don't maybe this isn't the greatest idea, but do you think the player who's injured should get to pick who replaces them? Based on what you just said? No. Based on the fact that we're gonna have clutch out here and just running the league even more. No, I'm good on that. Or, you know, God forbid that, you know, we go back to player coaching someday and then we have the coaches to make these horrible picks in the east. Well, let me not go that hard 'cause like you said Middleton, you want to stand for Middleton generally because you feel like he's overlooked. But then when he's like, actually not overlooked and he makes a team that really he doesn't probably deserve to be on relative to the other guys. You know, God forbid you have a player that's making a decision like a coaches where somebody that really is not even on the radar makes the team. So I'm good without them being able to pick their replacements because someone will make a dumb decision and then we'll just blame them forever and it won't be worth it. Well, Rohan and I discussed this earlier in the week, but the real problem here is Andrew Wiggins starting. And that's what moms someone like dejante off the team and dejante is having a better season than Andrew Wiggins. I really hope people understand that and no one. I mean, I don't want to bag on Andrew Wiggins. Can I have something? Sure. How does because I've seen people saying that, how does if you think Wiggins deserved a spot which, you know, I think it's at least fair to argue that he deserves you don't think he deserves a spot. Okay. He was an all star. Okay, so that was gonna be my question is unless you don't think that. If you feel like he was gonna make the team anyway, what difference does it make fundamentally? But I guess that's the question is you don't think he would have been one. And to me, it would have been interesting to see where the coaches came down on him because I could imagine I actually don't know. I think Wiggins would have been a fascinating case. I feel like coaches probably weren't as low on Wiggins as the media was. I definitely don't think that they would be as low on him as the fans were. And I do think that he probably kind of shines and glows in a way. The numbers show it. That he's been really effective there. But no, yeah. So that part is fine. I was only going to ask how does him start in differ from the idea of him making the team as a reserve? But if you're saying, he wouldn't have been on your team at all that answers it. Yeah, I mean, it was basically like I'm thinking about it like Carl towns or Rudy Gobert should have started in the front court, and then when they were when they were announcing the names, I was like, there was one spot left and I was thinking to myself like, okay, cat hasn't been called yet. And it's like, cat isn't an all star, what do we do in here? Clearly he's an all star, but then I was like, dejante, I really want to see dejante in the game. And I was just on my head just went back to, okay, if cat was a starter, then. Wiggins was not a starter, then dejante could have made the team and that would have been more sense to me..

"Okay, Rohan. So before we dive into the mailbag, I wanted to have a quick conversation with you about the all star starters. And in particular, one all star starter, maple Jordan, mister Andrew Wiggins, who was named to his very first team when the starters were announced last Thursday night. I know that we've had a few days to digest this news. Everyone has. But we haven't had a chance really to address it on the show. And I think that there are a few fascinating questions to ask that are connected to all star itself. I know neither of us had Wiggins as a starter or I don't think either of us had him on I know I didn't have him on my Western Conference team. I don't think you did either. And we talked about him in our last episode. But I don't think you did either. I'm curious, what was your reaction to Wiggins getting the nod do you think this is a dessert? Do you think this is deserved and you're fine with it or is it closer to a travesty that should have us completely rethink how these teams are selected in the first place? I don't think it's a travesty. I mean, I certainly don't think he should be a starter. You know, we talked about this on the last bot. I think we both realistically liked dejante Murray over him instead of what ended up happening. You know, the fan voting is also gotten to a point where it's not just about fan voting. It's like, oh, which celebrity did you have tweet out? Bam bam. Yeah. Is that his name? It was like a KPop star or something, right? So, like I said, I know that more people care about all star stuff that I do. At the end of the day, it's not a really big deal to me. At the same time, in a situation like this, I'm sure Andrew Wiggins is happy, but that one..

"Already the greatest shooter to ever play the game the numbers say it as well. Why don't we have the conversation about Steph Curry being the best NBA player right now? Why don't we do that? 'cause is it because he's not 60 11 like Katy? Is it because he don't have brute force, like LeBron James? Listen, broke, right now today, and you know how crazy I am about LeBron James. LeBron James meet the greatest player that ever played in the NBA. I'm about to debate that with nobody. That's how I feel. You feel how you feel for whoever you feel like that about. Yes. And if you don't feel that way, shame on you. Keep going. Shame on you. Steph Curry right now is the best player in the NBA part. I'm gonna get you the floor. I need all war your fans that are listening to you tight to what I'm about to say right now. I can't disagree with you. I will not, I will not disagree with you. Look, I believe at this moment that Kevin Durant is the best score in the NBA. I believe that Giannis is the most dominant player in the NBA. But when it comes to being the best player in the NBA right now, man, I have to get there to Steph Curry. Come on, man. I'm not even about to talk about the obvious him knocking down threes, the obvious him being a 90 whatever plus free throw percent shooter. I'm not even going into that. I'm going into the other areas of his greatness. How great he is. He's able to rub off on other people. And when I say that, listen to me real quick. Andrew Wiggins is playing some of the best basketball of his career. You know why? 'cause Andrew Wiggins could play freely. You know why Andrew Wiggins? Because of the attention that Steph Curry gets. And now we're starting to see Andrew Wiggins do Steph Curry like things. And no to all the casuals out there, I'm not talking about shooting the ball like still a plan like them. We're starting to see Andrew Wiggins move well without the ball. I'm starting to see Andrew Wiggins cut and slip pick and rolls. I'm starting to see a different type of Andrew Wiggins that I've never seen that we've been waiting on this entire time since let me say this real quick 'cause it's off that and you go right back to Andrew Wiggins. That's exactly why I think LeBron James the greatest player to ever play the game. So that's exactly. That's exactly why. Dover get a $50 million contract because he played with a dude. You made him that much better when Tristan Thompson get $80 million, because LeBron James on his team 'cause you play with a dude, when you see JR Smith, who New York through away? LeBron bring him in and he win championships. He wasn't even supposed to be in that deal. He was supposed to be the main person..

"They're the most efficient defensive team in the league right now. The warriors were always confident that the defense would kind of fall in the line after last season. Because what got lost in the shuffle of really a lost season a year ago was, okay, Steph was awesome. Almost won the MVP, almost carried them single handedly into the playoffs. But the defense was pretty good. And the reason the reason why it was because draymond was always that engine on that end of the floor. And this is a guy who wants to prove again that he can be the defensive player of the year. But when you start bringing in Andre Iguodala, who's still one of the better defensive players in the game. And you have a guy like kevon Looney, who's not moving up and down as well as he used to, but he knows where to be within this system. Andrew Wiggins, who defensively was kind of a hit or miss player during his time in Minnesota has found his niche with this group and so he can always score 18 points, but the difference in his game is that he's giving you something every night on the defensive end. And then here comes Damien Lee. Who has really blossomed into from a G league player to a solid NBA, the defender and a guy who can hit a jumper here and there. Gary Payton the second has given this team really solid minutes and is a force defensively every time he's out there. So if you have pieces in place to make up a very surprising defensive group that.

And so key. And i think in a way this is what we talking about. Even though he's taken upon themselves which you have the right to do say he ought to have a choice in this. And and because i do believe that You know him. Making a choice doesn't hurt anybody else. by those choices this idea that because he isn't vaccinating he's a threat to the community. See that's that's a that's just not true and yet that is what they use that and try to put you on a guilt trip. They put you on field trips. They also put you on on the fear of them wiping you out financially and this this to me is just so so outrageous. The other thing is is you know. We've we've mentioned there's quite a lot Both you and with daniel we we talk about this and we're concerned and we have our opinion but but our opinion is sort of what we what we wanna protect. We don't We don't have guns to say that he should decide what should be done for everybody. But there is the principle of voluntary choices. People make up their own minds. How they you know we'll be treated and so that's what we're arguing for and that is not that we know who should who should not We may have an opinion but that should be left out other people and really it should come down to individuals having trustworthy physician which is difficult to find these days because Most of the time they don't have one or two doctors they have a. They have a corporation that practices medicine. And then you have. The corporations ryan the drug companies and corporations making money on vaccines..

The other one of great note here is san francisco. And this is where andrew wiggins and i guess the andrew wiggins situation do enter the. Nba's craw. i suppose how have the warriors dealt with this house has been different from kyrie well in brooklyn. The nets are all at least publicly directly in alignment behind kyri. They're all saying we're not worried about it gonna do a kyri has to do. We support him saying that worked out. That was not necessarily the case in golden state again. This is something that i know. It became public shortly before the season began but privately this was an issue for the warriors for several weeks leading up the training camp. We don't exactly know what andrew wiggins methodology was. But when you know. Andrew wiggins was pretty firm when he spoke at media day that he was really against it. In for what i believe in whether as one thing or another get the vaccine show not gonna vaccination was the reason for not just explaining what you believe is on your business. That's what it comes down to. You know ask you what your beliefs guys. What you think is right or wrong. The big difference. Is that the california san francisco law isn't yet in effect so wiggins was able to attend media day and practice but coming up later this month will go into effect and in that case like wiggins would would not be able to play home games and from what i understand several Golden state warriors players in addition to the team leaned very hardly on andrew trying to convince him to do this. And then you had draymond green come out and basically say no man should force another man to get vaccinated. It's not my place nor my business on whether he gets vaccinated or not. Oh who else is fascinated or if you're fascinated and i'm not or if he isn't she is that's none of my business. I think there is something to be said for people's concern about something that's being pressed sohar like. Why are you pressing this sohar. I think you have to honor people's fillings and their own personal beliefs. And i think that's been loss brian that that that monologue. I just wanna be clear about this. He kind of became a heroic figure to a lot of people that i don't think would consider draymond green a hero before they heard him. Say this about wiggins yes and I don't know if kyrie irving what align himself with. Ted cruz wake. Ted cruz. aligned himself with kyrie irving. it's sort of made unusual bedfellows. Yes brian yes. America's cova death count was soaring past seven hundred thousand. There was ted cruz. The republican senator from texas who tweeted in reference to notable mba players who had expressed vaccine hesitancy quotes. I stand with kyrie. Irving i stand with andrew wiggins. I stand with bradley beal. I stand with jonathan isaac hashtag. Nba hashtag. your body your choice. Yeah and you also had lebron james basically backing up drain greens supportive. Andrew wiggins is independent. Joyce and not only lebron james a A very vocal person within the nba. But also definitely a thought leader in the african american community. But brian on the wiggins thing. What was stunning to me. And this has happened over the last. you know. we're recording on tuesday. It's happened over. The last twenty four hours is a significant development in this story. That changes the story fundamentally right so over the weekend The golden state warriors. Coach steve kerr announced that andrew wiggins have been vaccinated and would be available for their games. going forward Andrew got vaccinated. Just told me today that it was fine with us acknowledging it and that'll be the end of it so i'm not going to answer any questions beyond that. His decision apparently came in the wake of the nba announcing they would Doc players pay and You know basically despite what. Andrew described very vehemently as his philosophy on it West and a week later he He got the job as it. Were seizing starnes. Miss this basketball. I didn't want to get the vaccination. Something added to the thing about it is the nba doesn't have a mandate but they're they're basically making it next to impossible to be able to operate without getting the vaccine on your become they're stopping me and the nba has said that now ninety five percent of its players have received at least one dose and that a significant percentage of those players have done so in the last couple of weeks. And it's it's really. The threat of lost pay and the protocols of the league is passed that have contributed to pushing that number closer to one hundred percent and so while ted cruz and kyri or andrew wiggins or draymond green or lebron can say whatever they want and by the way drain on the brun are vaccinated. Ultimately the nba is a private enterprise and ultimate more talking about millions of dollars and that has been a guiding principle for a lot of players in this. But the thing about lebron. Brian is that you didn't three tweet. Re dre comments. He also spoke about this at his own media day interview with some people's bodies and well beings in also. I don't feel like for me personally now. Should get involved in and and what people should do their bodies and their livelihoods but as far as speaking for everybody in air individualities and things they want to do Like that's my. That's not my job which then prompted and his canter. The celtics center to go on cnn to then criticized. Lebron heard. I was very disappointed and ridiculous. You know obviously lebron james. He's one of the face off the league. And i want to go out there and say to encouraging. Everyone is going to get this vaccine. So we can save other lives. And this then led to kareem abdul jabbar. Brian who sometimes feels like the moral centre of the nba. At this point this towering figure in american cultural history it led to him publishing an essay on sub stack. that said quote. I'm a huge fan of lebron james but this time lebron is just plain wrong and his being wrong could be deadly especially to the black community. Where all for freedom but not at the expense of others nor if it damages the country and quote which is basically this now public disagreement among some of the greatest players in the history of the sport playing out very very publicly and i can't imagine the league office here.

"Marks. The general manager's position he is just gone right into punt formation. When talking to the media sense said it's a private matter for kyrie. Well it is a private matter for kyrie but it's a heck of a problem for the nets Whether they want to hide behind that statement or not yeah. It feels like look. There's a larger conversation we'll touch on here about public health and privacy and how many of these choices are around vaccination. But we're really talking about here is also just a sports business story. It's actually just a sports story. What happens when one of the three best players on the nba. Title favorite ends up not being able to play a half of their games because of a local ordinance and it feels like you know so much of this got kicked off through this rolling stone story that came out and look. This is not spn's reporting but it was explosive reporting. They talked to kyrie's aunt she's the head of his family foundation. She's described as one of the few people in his regular circle of advisers. How would you describe what she said. As kyrie's motives here are concerned. I don't wanna put words in her mouth but she basically implied that kyrie was going to be fighting a grander fight beyond just whether he could play in the nba or not Just basically a fight for anybody who felt that they were being forced to vaccinate or forced to do anything. I think if i recall his aunt said something along the lines of what he's doing is not religious based its moral based knowing whether his aunt was speaking for him or whether she was speaking on your own would be a key yes or no question to get from kyrie irving at some point hiree definitely feels a draw to be much bigger than basketball and in certain areas in his life. He has been and by the way in some areas of his life. It's been very admirable. Yeah and you know. It's it's a big standard. Take i think for modern athletes who want to be you know bigger than athletes. The icon is mohammed ali and muhammad ali at a very delicate time and our country stood up for what he believed in in terms of the draft. And i don't want to put words into kyrie's mouth or make an assumption of what he's thinking because that's really dangerous. But i think hiree would like to be somebody who is seen as that type of inspirational person beyond the game hiree in the past has dabbled around the concept of trying to start his own league away from the nba. So you know he has a guy to say the he's a guy that he thinks. Big is true. I believe he's even talked about After his playing career going living on a commun- things of this nature so there's no telling what he may say and what he may do quite frankly and pablo. It's actually my preference as somebody who covers the nba. I really made a decision a couple of years ago. Then i'm gonna came to kyri. I was only going to focus on the rectangle of the basketball court. Because after that got a little bit squishy and you could find yourself sort of stuck in a swamp trying to follow going on in this case we have no choice because his actions and words outside the basketball court affect the team on the court. Who's maybe highest profile team in the nba. And a chance to win the championship this year. Which is the core of everything that we do. At certain point. It feels like i guess. Life has dealt me this hand where. I must now go hunting for these instagram posts. Tyree has started liking in which vaccines are alleged to be part of a plot to connect people to a master computer on behalf of satan. I can't say for sure that's why he thinks. But certainly there's evidence that he is is studying those concepts. So what does happen from here brian. How long does go on. What kind of resolution do you see on the horizon. If at all so the nba is doing everything in its power to force players into getting the vaccine. The lives of players who are unvaccinated are much more uncomfortable than their vaccinated teammates from them. Not being able to sit in the sections of the plane. That are more comfortable to them. Not being able to eat with their teammates to how much they have to test to Whether they may have to spend time away from the team if they're exposed to cova And most importantly they're gonna take kyrie irvings money for games that he doesn't play and not much. Are we talking about ryan well. That's a key factor here so the nba players union and the league as we speak are fighting over this exact thing the nba in an effort to force kyrie and andrew wiggins quite frankly to get vaccinated decided they were not going to pay a players if they if they had to sit due to the city rules and for kyrie irving that is going to be in the neighborhood of four hundred thousand dollars per game. They are absolutely trying to turn the screw as hard as possible on on kyrie to get vaccine so brian i mean looking at your latest reporting here with woes tonight about what. The nets are kind of feeling about all of this right now with two weeks to go before the season starts. How would you describe how the organization is approaching this at this point. Well they've been hopeful that kyrie you know would get compliance would get vaccinated and since that is not happening and the reality pablo is. There's only one day left in the entire preseason where the nets are are scheduled to be out of new york. And that's a that's a one game a one day trip to philadelphia for a game next week. it's kyra can't practice at least with the team and so as they peak ahead to their early season schedule they have six game homestand in mid october where it would be eleven consecutive days. Where under the current rules of kyrie is not compliant. He only play in those six games. He can't practice on the days off in between man and so it's very difficult in the national basketball association to not play a practice with your team for seven to ten to fourteen days at a time and just show up and play and the nets are now starting to come to terms with the reality that their hopes that kyrie would get this Taking care of aren't going through. You know they were. Hopefully we could go in here. They are a week later. It's not taking so. They have started to to examine whether or not they want to allow kyrie to be a part time player. Do they want to enter into a situation where they will have to go through. These shock changes to their team bringing kyrie in and out There's even a stretch pablo in in november and december. Where they're at home for twenty out of twenty six days i mean the nba has accepts stretches. The reality is that the nets are starting to think that they may have to make a decision on this. I mean. i don't think they're there yet. But i think they are trying to be responsible and the thing about is they're very deep team. You know they don't have another kyrie irving but they have another great point. Guard have another. Mvp level point guard right there in james harden and they have a patty mills who they who is their major offseason free agent signing Who is a starter level player. He's not kyrie irving. Don't get me wrong. But he is a quality replacement and so they are beginning to to to say listen. We have to go through a process here and really pablo if i could translate it. Yeah i think it's the nets beginning to push back To basically say kyri we. We will support your decision either way. But you've got to make that decision you can't sit on the fence and so we may be headed toward that becoming a you know a pinch point four korean the nets in the short term future. But it would. Just be blunt with me here about this brian because if the nets are beginning to push back in a decision might be made a very tough decision i mean are we talking about a trade. Are we talking about something else. Who in the organization has the power on that. How how's the power structure work here. Well it's it's be kevin durant. Kevin durant is the guy who really is the point person on any big decision with the nets. This would be a huge. You know the situation really is is that kyri is is not a valuable player in new york. If he's not vaccinated he's a valuable player in twenty seven other cities he's how slayer in new york. He's half a player in new york and the nets are trying to title this year. Kyrie may feel unfair. But it's the reality. It's the reality of the nets have to play with and and so. I don't think we're at that point and i don't think katie is at that point but i think a week ago. Everybody was hopeful and sort of in full support. That is now starting to come in doubt and the nets in in kevin durant are going to have to evaluate their options. And i don't want to talk about trade because that starts to fire people up. But let's get aggregated buddy if you are going to be a new the every other player currently playing in new york no matter where they are on the vaccination has gotten vaccine because they understand if you wanna be a player in new york. This what you have to do right now. Kyri has not made that decision and so you have to start to deduct about whether he wants to be a player in new york and that's a situation that the nets have to do the calculus begin to think about doing it. So brian before my head explodes at all of these possibilities now of what happens to kyrie and his organization and what kevin durant ask. Do any of it..

"He's our favorite time of year as. We're back traveling. The road of college football and goodyear knows the passion and the excitement. It takes to drive forward whether your team is home or away. The games traditions are still the same. Through every first down touchdown or fourth quarter comeback by moving. Anything is possible. Good years here to drive you forward on the road that moves us all goodyear more driven so grind windhorst. I gotta start here with the question that i think everybody wants an answer to. How do you feel about being colleagues with david letterman now. It was a very unusual and odd. Moment brian windhorst covers the nba for espn and bore witness to one of the more surreal press conference moments in recent memory. Neither i nor anyone else in the room was laughing. So the genius show me. What kind of genius. He's still got so as bait the picture for his here because for people who aren't familiar with what the hell you're talking about. What did happen at a nets press converts. Yes so does that. The scene and especially for me nets media day started like the twenty something of september and Minutes before the press conference. I found out that kyrie irving had not met the protocol and would not be reporting which essentially meant. He wasn't gonna be able to play in new york for the foreseeable future. And so i was handling this. This new story and kevin durant was the first Nets Player up to speak so i sort of run into the press conference room and i just took a seat in the back row. There's a person directly in front of me three feet in front of me and I sorta did a double take. Because i was like that guy looks like david letterman He's wearing a mask all mast at that. Okay well listen. You know in new york strange things happen. I didn't think it was dave letterman. And then he turns to me and says how you doing david letterman here Do you have a notebook. And your response response to david letterman slash hipsters. Santa claus year as I just said hello. My name's brian. And i don't i have a tape recorder and He needed the notebook because it was about to be a prop in his questions with durant dave from a basketball digest kevin Katie wha why do people call you. K d Can i call you. Katie are okay. My first name's kevin obviously the nets had told Durant that letterman was going to be there. He wasn't stunned that he was there. But if kevin knew what the questions we're going to be he didn't let on and david in my humble non comedic mind asked very three questions this year. What percentage you plan on giving on the court ninety ninety five hundred hundred ten. What do we look at at One hundred ten. Dan ryan win or is coming out. Strong taking on one of the titans of american comedy. Well i mean. He is a titan of american comedy. But i don't think he's got the same writing staff when he did at the late show. I cannot wait for whatever this is the come out and just watch your face. Hopefully in the background. Very judgmental bryant. I was i probably was looking at him. Like what are you doing. This is the best you got and this is the best guide. And you're like. I have a job. I ever cascading series of headlines that's about to plunge the nba into a national controversy. That will unite ted cruz and kareem abdul-jabbar. Who's on subject now. And all of these other insane characters underneath this heading of what the hell is going on with the nba. In this vaccine brian. Now that would have been funny if he would have stuck around for the kyrie irvings zoom and ask some questions that would have been worth buying a ticket to but brian hold on a second year because the elephant in the room here was the guy who was not in the room. Here which was kyrie irving kyri was missing. Apparently because he is not complied with new york city's vaccine protocol which essentially requires people to get vaccinated for indoor activities quote unquote and so. This kept him away from not just media day last week but also more importantly from practice on tuesday which was the nets first practice back in brooklyn after getting back from training camp out in san diego. So let's just rewind here parse the pertinent details. When did you become aware in the first place. Something was even up with kyrie probably early september. Maybe laid off the law passed. I want to say in august and i. I shouldn't say past. It was is a decree from the mayor of new york. Bill de blasios and it became pretty clear that it was going to impact the the knicks and the nets players. That if they did not have at least one shot and could document that shot basically that they were not going to be able to play In new york and so naturally somebody my position we did some reporting on it. The word we got back basically. Was you know. There's confidence that everybody will be vaccinated. And in fact numerous players more than one of the players on the nets and the knicks did get vaccinated or did satisfy the protocol in one way or the other i can't say for sure. They were all vaccinated but when the day came everybody was there except for kyri so it became clear that he was the one who did not meet the protocol. And you know even on that day. The nets were saying the same things as they were saying in the lead up to The beginning of the season. Which is we're confident kyri will get it They said that you know throughout the following training camp in san diego which they ended up being fortunate pablo. They scheduled their training camp in san diego months ago but had their training camp ben in brooklyn kyri would not have been allowed to practice so blowing off site enabled them to have kyrie in practice. It was sort of a a happy coincidence that they were able to dodge that situation but nina. Now it's head on so kyri. Zoom and not in person on media day brian. That whole scene. What what did he say. What did he actually offer in terms of an explanation as to his absence. It was an ironic inverse because for the last year the players were in that room talking to us on a screen and now we were in that room talking to him on screen. He was at his home office and we were there and he basically just said it's all privacy it's all private do you expect to be either vaccinated or compliant in time. By the time you guys come back from la after the preseason game. Not brian i appreciate your questions Human being i think I just love to just keep that private in not able to present their today But it doesn't mean that. I'm putting any limits on the future of.

"The Phillies get into the playoffs You've got in the American League You've got the Seattle Mariners Remember them Scott Yes yes They do now Yeah Back in back in 2001 when they won a 116 games well they haven't made the playoff since It's been 20 years And their only two games out of making the playoffs And so they're one of the hot teams in the American League as well Ditto for Toronto And of course the Red Sox and the Yankees are playing each other this year Currently those two teams would play each other in a one game playoff If the playoffs started today So you've got a whole bunch of things happening in the in both in both leagues and I think one of the things that's gonna be really interesting about this is I think this is gonna be the last year where you have this ridiculous and I'm a huge opponent of it this NCAA knockout thing where you play the entire season and it comes down to one playoff game I think that's gonna be the end next year You're gonna see expanded playoffs But right now you've got three teams four teams in the American League trying to get into the playoffs with a week to go a little over a week ago And in the national league somebody some great team is going to be undeserving of one game knockout Yeah I've never liked that just from either Before I go Android it's terrible Andrew Wiggins who gave the headaches to the Timberwolves for years is now give me the Golden State Warriors A serious migraine because the city of San Francisco recently required proof of vaccination for large indoor events Andrew Wiggins says he won't get vaccinated unless forced to do so I'm not sure what that is does that mean He will miss all his home games It's exactly what it could mean and Andrew Wiggins is by no means the only person This is going to be a huge issue What's happening in San Francisco What's happening in New York And when these cities are mandating that you have to show proof of vaccination then you're not protected by your collective bargaining agreement so that very well may mean that you're not gonna be able to play and this is a huge can of worms for these indoor sports I'm sure it's gonna be happening in hockey as well And another wrinkle to year almost year three of COVID in American sports Yeah I mean the winner could go to those the.

"Adam coping with in the leadoff spot as we are every weekday 5 to 6 A.m.. Yeah, That's what the Warriors sounded like. Last night actually center against the Clippers. Clippers won away Warriors one on one. But Andrew Wiggins may be assed far as a starting warrior went yesterday. That's kind of a story. But then Eric Paschal on the bench or certainly a factor, But I think everybody had their mind elsewhere yesterday after what happened in Washington, D See at the Capitol building with the domestic terrorist trying to take over the building, and then I think that was what was it. The forefront of most everyone's mind yesterday was sort of started as a day where they were going to count the electoral college and they were going to certify it all between Senate and Congress. And the joint session that we end up with this this terrorist attack on the Capitol, which was just just that One of the most surreal things having any of us have ever seen on television. You know, you start picking out those moments in those days in American history, but he's got the days right December 7th When I got January, 6th on that list September 11th is there. You know, there's a very short list of dates in American history. Where, where everyone's going to know what the date significance means, And this is one of those days and again. Yet again, the sports landscape plays a role in this on not to the extent that it has with other social justice in the last I don't know. The last year the last five years we could go back to Tolo Tamir Rice. We can go back to Trayvon Martin. And then, of course, George Floyd last year. I mean, you know, Rianna Taylor goes on and on and on the list, and and I think you know, in in sort of Trying toe get through how we feel about this stuff for sort of talk about how we feel about this stuff. The MBA has been prevalent in all of it. You know, people are going to sit back. I didn't see as much of this yesterday and I don't want to say it's going away. Maybe I'm just I've turned a blind eye to it, or I'm not paying much attention to it. But the whole stick to sports thing for people in sports from people outside of sports, It appears that that was not really a topic yesterday. This was not a It was an American issue yesterday, right? This was a historic moment. I'm you know, I'm not trying to make light of any of this. I'm not poking fun at any of this, but I think we were all relieved to get to the afternoon into the evening and have a little basketball. Think we were all all pretty relieved. You know, not not that It was all done. Not that everything was finished. You still have the National guard sitting outside of the Capitol building, And I know for African Americans myself included. It was a frustrating, angering day. You see how the police and law enforcement reacted at the Capitol building after what had happened just hours before. Really? 24 hours before we find out that nobody no police officer in Kenosha, Wisconsin, was going to be prosecuted or charged with anything after the shooting of Jacob Blake seven times into his back, And then you've got terrorists who are storming the gates and the doors and shooting into the or excuse me, breaking the windows and vandalizing the Capitol building first time this has happened since 18 14 the war of 18 12. Off for for history buffs out there. That's the last time that happened. When the British break into the Capitol building, they burned down the White House. By the way from my history buffs out there. I was talking to Dave about this this morning, just a little. Note on the WARF 18 12 when when they break it, James Madison's president at the time over, they break into the into the White House to Senator Senator Blaze. Dolly Madison, who was James Madison's wife, Dave. In my era, Quick wasn't it Wasn't a framed photo are painting of George Washington. It was a painting of George Washington is what? She just wasn't a photograph. No, if you go that captain Fick can't read yet, right? Alexander Graham Bell is still working on the phone. Did radio so she ends up saving a painting of George Washington. Historic painting, But the story goes that she and he had she'd cooked like a huge dinner in one of the halls there. She was a part of a huge dinner that was gonna be served. And you know the British come get ready to tear down the building and set in the place. They get inside. Nobody's there. But the table setting. The food is made to the British. I'll sit down and they have their meal before they set it on fire. Well, you know, it's it's you look at those moments in history, and it's It's sort of a fun outline story of that. But this was a scary moment. Yesterday. These were people who live in this country. These are people who Are a part of our communities here who have decided that when they get upset, and they don't get their way that they're going to march to the capital, they're going to take what they think belongs to them. And the comparisons between what happened with George Floyd and a lot of athletes spoke about this. We're gonna get into this because Steve current don't don't worry, War your fans will get into the extras knows Yesterday as well because Steve Kerr talked a lot about it after the game the game itself, But it did feel like a weird game, but also your warrior fan a little bit encouraging, based on how they played against one of the best defensive teams in the league and the team that plans to be atop the Western Conference this year. I think there were some encouraging things to take away, especially the bench play from that second unit. It's really starting to sort of Trim itself into what it needs to be starting to mold itself into a good second unit, and they start to get some scoring out of a unit. Michael Molder has been a part of that swells Eric Paschal, so we will get into that stuff. But there was a lot that went on yesterday around the game because again two days ago Tuesday afternoon, we find out that that no one in Kenosha, Wisconsin, is going to be charged with any of the shooting of Jacob Blake. And so then what happens is yesterday On the heels of what happens at the Capitol, many MBA players coaches teams decided that they were going to demonstrate you had between Pistons in the Milwaukee Bucks. They took a knee both teams to start the game. They do the tip and then after the possession, every player on the floor in every coach took a knee for back to back possessions to do to two little turnovers to each other to demonstrate the discussed the angst of the anger that I think a lot of us are are feeling this morning that if it were black people if it were people of color if it were Muslims marching upon the capital, this would have been an entirely different situation. Would've been a whole lot quicker. I'll tell you that the thing's got shut down. So I understand the anger because I'm one of the people who was upset about this yesterday. I also felt like it was a nice release to have this happen with the NBA. Last night, I saw a joint statement was put out at one point by the Celtics and By the Miami Heat, saying that they felt like they needed to play their game. And I shared that sentiment..
