"A scrape by with a split against detroit. But they win that game today and is always nice to visit with you. How are things going. Great dan and you know there were also past the point now where there's about three weeks left in the minor league system and as we talked about last time the cardinals will bring up a couple of players potentially from the minor leagues. Although one of those spots might be dakota hudson. Return for example. Yeah that'd be interesting. How do you think they handled that in terms of they're not just going to throw them live into major league action. Where do you think he starts in how that works. Well a lot depends on the cardinals. Loton starwood minorly rehabs down in jupiter. And that's where the cut because hudson is. I saw him actually throw down there last week. so he maybe he appears in a game with palm beach or two and then you know the other places that they play will depend on which teams are at home. 'cause they liked the cardinals to control the environment. So if memphis is on the road and shrink yields at home they might add springfield or vice versa. Or maybe even go to peoria. But i think given it hudson's probably gonna throw just an inning or two here and there. They probably won't need a lot of rehab for him a given that he's been ramping up his workload for some time. Now it'd be interesting to see in terms of catching now that it's official yada. Your molina comes out yesterday. Signs a one year extension then today says next year is it. I am done with being a player in baseball. He's going to retire. It does make it interesting. The immediate future's of andrew kisner and avante harare. How is harare. Been fearing here. As of late borough started the season age twenty and was challenged a aa for the first time. So he's you know he's been young for his levels his whole career. He turned twenty one. In the beginning.

"But you know it's really nice to see herrera step up and play well that aa because you know. Obviously the cardinals are still trying to figure out what to do. With the catching position and yadira molina may be back another year. Which makes you wonder what andrew kisner future is. And it could be that harare will be able to step up and say yeah i can be that heir-apparent and potentially enable the cardinals to do something different with andrew business this winter if they so choose if people for god and wrap it up with this september call. Ups are different. It's not like anybody on the forty man come on up it's a different deal. So maybe explain how that works for fans also Dc anybody being called up by the cardinals. Yeah it's interesting you know. You've talked about the the the labor trade offs. We're talking about that earlier in our in our chat here dan and one of the trade offs that was made was as as folks were called a year ago. They expanded active rosters to twenty six players from twenty-five well at the same time baseball decided no more with the up to forty players allowed up to the entire forty man roster up in september were only going to allow two players and while that those reviewed as separate issues they kinda balance out money wise. And i doubt it's a coincidence. Because guess what they have to pay another player a minimum of half a million dollars a year at the major league level and they can recoup that expense by having only two players up from twenty six to twenty eight instead of the cardinals averaged I went back and looked the data somewhere between six and eight call ups every september so instead of six or eight you only have to so it'll be interesting to see if the cardinals bring up relievers Of course three better minimum Makes puts less of a premium on having large bullpen. they certainly need help with the bat But the reality is the cupboards pretty bear at aaa memphis in terms of any potential impact hitters to call up or they would've been called up already You know we saw Just a williams are in year. He's on the injured list other than he and allie sanchez. there are no triple a hitters. That are on the forty man roster right now you know folks would be interested to see nolan gorman or maybe a one yep as. I really doubt they're ready. And on the pitching side. You know it's the same suspects that our candidates woodford oviedo on hell ron bone on the bullpen side. Fernandez elhage whitley So you know. There's not going to be probably they..

"Let's say good morning to brian walton. Hey brian how're you doing wednesday. Dan happy wednesday to you. it's not been a happy wednesday cardinal fans Wherever you may be listening into this as the cardinals have now dropped six in a row. What what's your takeaway from from seeing these games and it was a really disappointing loss last night which the cardinals fell ten to one but overall the gist of it six losses in a row. What have you seen. I think last night was sort of typical. What we saw on that is that they didn't get a good start from carlos. Martinez gave up the huge home. Run and you know that that five did nothing deficit in the third inning. Felt like this huge envel- that was weighing the cardinals down. And you know as much as the pitching has drawn scrutiny. For good reason do all the injuries and the struggles lately you look at the offense and the offenses averaging barely three runs a game this month and so. The cardinals aren't in a situation. They're behind early. That the offense can put together enough runs to to come back and win games and it was a valiant fatty but even that you know still short and you maybe the return paul young will will help. But there's just doesn't seem to be a lot of assistance on the way that that looks like is ready to help the cardinals. You know sort of take that next step and get back to where they were earlier in the year. Yeah and you look at you. Know key moments like in the cincinnati series when he had the tying runner winning runs coming to the plate. And you've got at mondo soon. This is no disrespect to them. Or an andrew kisner or you had ron don. I mean you're talking about guys that are either bench players or have been minor leaguers coming up in key spot so the injuries definitely have hurt them. That's right and we talked about the young you know. He's in his rehab standing in memphis and the hope is he'll be able to join the team this weekend in chicago but harrison baiter. The news is not as good. He hasn't progressed as well as the cardinals had hoped. And so you know. It's unclear yet when he'll be able to rejoin the lineup. But you'll you you look and see as you said sosa has played credibly. It could be that he might move over to second base. And we see edmund continuing right field for the foreseeable future at least until baiter gets back. Absolutely what have you seen from young in his rehab starts. What are you hearing about him. Well he's had a couple of strikeouts but he also had a double as i recall. Unfortunately memphis was rained out last night. So they're gonna play a doubleheader. Today i don't know the hill play both gazer but of course we know what to expect from paul which is very steady solid defense..

"Great info from brian on the cardinals minor league system the minor leagues in general baseball in general. And as always we say. Good morning to brian on this wednesday. How you doing brian. I'm doing great a lot to talk about today. let's get into it. let's get into it. So the cardinals did make assigning. It's not a trade for nolan renato. Or it's not it's not linda. Lindores northern door moved to st louis yet. Nothing yet but they did get a little. A little You know. I guess depth. Move it catching so tell us about this catcher. The cardinals have signed. Yeah tyler hyneman. They signed to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring main. Spring camp is a toy. Nine year old is a basically triple a. debts. Kinda catcher is a switch hitter. Hits well at least in the minor. Leagues has had a couple of brief stints in the major leagues with miami in twenty nineteen in the giants this last year but the giants have a not only buster posey but also a top prospect enjoy bart so they took hyneman off their forty man roster and the cardinals pick him up as a minor league signing. He's not going to affect the molina situation. One way or another. The cardinals had a minor league veteran catcher. Jose annoy who has kind of who is a taxi. Squad win Andrew kisner with saint louis but he left as a free agent so they need a veteran guy at aaa. And that's probably the role that tyra heinemann is gonna play in twenty twenty one. Yeah i'm so excited about the young man. Harare that i got a chance to see him in spring training and i believe he's probably and i don't know if you're in the same camp but maybe two years away He kind of looked like a young yati the way he was receiving some of the things that he did just give our fans and our listeners. Idea just how good. This young prospect is well. We haven't ruled out our full-time fifty yet. But you're going to see yvonne herrera in the top five in karnal system. That's not a big spoiler. I mean this. This young man has progressed very quickly. He actually played in the arizona. Follow league A year ago now and performed very well down there not only with the bat but also in his game calling skills is very very dedicated to his work in his it. Just a good all around player so yet now. The challenge on yvonne harare. He's very much like normally gorman in terms of his development and what i mean is that he's played at high but he hasn't yet played at aa and so any thoughts that harare junk all the way from from palm beach replay like eighteen games in twenty nineteen all the way to san luis is unreasonable and the cardinals have another catcher. Julio rodriguez who doesn't have the same kind of profile but could maybe be a backup guy and he's probably gonna be..

"Guy I said this on twitter I'm rambling here I apologize but. I said this on twitter about Yada Yada. Yada prideful Guy Yadi is a lot like we saw in Jordan Documentary Michael Jordan would take any little personal flight and magnify to motivate himself because that's how he got that additional fire. I think is the same way and so I'm fine with that I. Think if that helps motivate Yati and we've seen that I think. He's very similar in terms of how they go about it. I'm not saying Yati and Jordan are the same athlete script. What I'm saying is yachties near the top of what he does and he needs an extra motivation. So I know that personality and and pride comes into this I. Just think it has to be a balance from both sides between the cardinals understanding that. He got he wants to get paid something he can live with and got understanding maybe the cardinals might not have the most money to give him in terms of the open market I. Just Hope it works out because I think you ought deserves it and I think it I mean it's obvious cardinal. See Yati finishes a cardinal when I think from a baseball perspective is well, he's still a really really good catcher at a position that is hard to find in major, League Baseball and you know Matt leaders I can't imagine that he would be an everyday guy in baseball moving forward and Andrew Kisner. We haven't seen a lot of him over the last couple years maybe he's the future maybe it's Harare. The the young guy in the system. But for right now over the next couple of years if you replace Yada Your Molina with say Andrew Kisner all due respect to Andrew Kisner but from a baseball standpoint teams taking a step back. Yeah I agree with that and you can look at the defensive metrics which they weren't the same Yati. That's why you know he wasn't in the gold glove conversation but I don't even look at that. You know you talk to the cardinal players I talked to the cardinal players. You can go to every picture on the cardinal staff right and ask them about the importance of Yati in terms of how Yada handles how Yati makes them better. That's something that isn't going to be checked off in some box of analytics I think you ought to is still a really good player you mentioned. There's not another option that's ready to go out of the box for certain. We know that. Yeah, he is. So yes. Sure. Not only in terms of being a legacy player, but in terms of the season ahead at the very least yes. Yati can help this ballclub in a lot of ways that it's really hard to gauge. Yes I agree with that. I think that this off season for a lot of reasons is is going to be different as visit with Jim Hayes of Fox Sports, Midwest and I think that there will be decisions that teams and players. Have to make on. Maybe we'll see more short term deals there will also jim be potentially some real changes. Will we see the designated hitter fulltime in the national? League how will that affect the market for players? How would that affect the market for someone like Nelson Cruz, even someone like Marcello Suna, and I think that those rule changes those potential rules that will be carried over from last year or the twenty nineteen season or I..

"By four million dollars, twenty percent otherwise he automatically becomes a free agent. I just can't see any scenario in which build a wit and the cardinals front office with yachties team as long as everyone's fairly reasonable does not. Come to an agreement to bring him back I. Just I can't see it because more than anything two year deal. He still really good player added a really really scarce position. Well, the way I look at it from a baseball perspective taking money out of the equation is that. If Andrew Kisner wasn't here. In twenty twenty with all the doubleheaders that they had and matt leaders was hobbling around on basically one leg. that. Tells me that they don't think he was ready. And then that tells me then is he ready next year to be the everyday catcher and give you one hundred twenty starts or one, hundred ten? Probably, not so they still value him as in everyday catcher, and there's no reason to think that he couldn't be keeps himself in great shape. My concern would be in the dollars and cents aspect of this Common Sense approach is that there was nobody at the Ballpark we don't know about the budgetary constraints of the cardinals. I. Don't see their books, but I do know that no one was at the ballpark. And this goes across the board for the cardinals in every other major, League team..

"There's never seems to be anything to talk about when we get together. Yeah. Yeah. Even in the off season during a pandemic, we find things to talk about it. It's just amazing. Baseball keeps in three, hundred, sixty, five days a year. Yesterday was normal season. If you had a normal season an lopsided game like that, you'd say, well, it's just one of those games and you try to get through it and you put it aside and in a way you go. But this account of of quote Unquote pennant race and you had two teams that were hot and there were the obviously Molina was hot. A lot of things happen what were your takeaways from some of? The things that you saw yesterday? Well, one of the things that happened early was a couple Hook Solo home runs against yeah clarity and know the first thing I thought in my mind is Cristiano has been having a terrible season so far and you know the fact that he's starting to wake up right now you know is one of the worst things that could possibly happen because we've seen he's dominated the cardinals pitching in the past. And you know the cardinals and brewers still at what seven games left at. Ed this year. So that was the first thing I thought obviously you jack clarity didn't didn't have his game let a lot of pitches in the Middle Plate and paid for it that put pressure on the Pan and then you know in the fifth inning frustrations you know starting to boil over at you know things happen that you just have to hope. Yaya Molina's wrist injuries could be serious enough to knock him out. They stayed in for two more innings but you know it's difficult to tell given you know his toughness level and tolerance for pain. You know you just have to hope that you won't have to go on the injured list because if he does, you know I, think everybody appreciates the shepherding. He's done of the rotating group of pictures that have come through there and. Not Fight Against Leaders Andrew Kisner but you know they would be it would be a noticeable drop-off. If you had your Molina can't play I. Didn't see him coming out I. I. knew he was frustrated with the previous. Ending or two before with the strike zone and striking out what was going on in the game clearly upset with Braun and the bench. I. I didn't see him coming out at that time and remember Wong was a scratch the game they had Thomas in the game they were they were limited with bench players. So I didn't see him coming out of the game he knows the situation he knows what's going on. You're on a great point Danettes thing that I ask about the other day and that was at the carnage only on which position players right now they need the extra pitchers obviously. But what that means is you only got three three hitters on the pitch and you know all the talk last night about you know what position player might come into pitch as AS Roma's pitching situation is they were they had fewer options you know among a position players remaining. So you know the.

"Roster and a text squad well can players move back and forth or not and how do they do service time and they pay. Well I put that aside and said okay. Let's just make some basic assumptions and come up with a roster and really the top thirty or were was really easy to do and the reason. Why was that before the the shutdown before the roster freeze it occurred back in March march twelfth in right thereafter. The cardinals had twenty nine players on the Saint. Louis Roster Twenty eight players plus Jordan Hicks. Who's on sixty injure list but Hicks is making great progress? Everybody can what we saw it in front of him on pens and Mike Show talked about him being right on track and so Hicks would be should be ready to come back. And he would be sixteenth pitcher. The twenty ninth player. The number thirty on the roster would be in your opinion the third catcher Andrew Kisner who had been optioned out. But you know would be brought back on and that gives a sixteen pitcher fourteen position players and You know a good balance. Three catchers backups at it all the all the necessary positions what gets really interesting is the twenty man. Xy Squad and one is. Your strategy is an organization to how you're GONNA use those twenty spots. Let's put aside to forty man roster for main soon. That's not an issue and you can pick your your best twenty guys. How do you define what's best? Well you need some guys who are close to the major leagues. Some guys who ready when injuries occur or something happens and you need guys to fill in so here. I'm talking about guys like Alex. Rae S in Tennessee. Junior Fernandez Wounded Sosa Austin Dean. Right the guys that are you know. A lot of them have actually experienced some don't but most of them have been there before and you know they will be ready to be plugged in at a moment's notice but the other part of the equation is with no minor league season. Chances are all these players are going to lose your helmet. And so it's something you've asked me about previous calls so in when I put together my Mark Roster I said okay who are that handful of top tier prospects that is the saint. Louis Cardinals would like to see them. Continue to be active all year in. Let's say Accu by meat accurate terms baseball activity baseball skills in a structured environment. I don't mean active on the roster because I don't think these players and I'm talking here about a guy like Noah Gordon for example or a that Thompson who you are Liberty Tour Catcher Yvonne Herrera. These guys that are you know the top prospects in the system. They're close but they're not close enough to the major leagues. But they're the kind of guys if you could afford to use roster spots. Gordy for forty five fifty guys that you just want to keep your heart your hand in and keep them active because they're gonNA contribute at twenty twenty one. You'll have a leg up if you can do that in terms of Dylan Carlson Let's just say for ARGUMENT'S SAKE. It's an eighty two game regular season. Is it worth starting his clock or in a general sense? Is it worth starting? The clock is some of the top prospects in baseball. I I can't get a read one way or another and I guess we'll find out hopefully sooner rather than later but it is an interesting dilemma for teams in. Maybe it's not a dilemma at all. D start them right away or do you wait and the question I ask is what's different between an eighty two game season in one hundred sixty two game season if the rules are still the same and that is you know. There's there has to be a period of time that play would have to be in the minor leagues to avoid having to becoming a free agent a year sooner there would still be the same motivation to keep their service time down. I think in the case the same as cardinals you know unfortunately because they only got halfway through spring training we get to the bottom of the question of whether Tyler O.`Neil orlean Thomas are going to be starting outfielders and you know a truncated spring training where there's not going to be the same kind of competition. Probably that question may not get answered right away so that could flow in the regular season and you know the positive is you got designated hitter position. But you've also got Tommy Edmund who you're trying to get at bats who is doesn't have an everyday position so you know. I still think if the rules are the same nick. There has to be some number of games that a player has sustained minor stroke weight that extra year of exposure that the cardinals might WanNa try to work with Dylan Carlson. A short while. Let's wrap it up with this. The car donation DOT COM Brian. What are you working on? Well are continuing minor league history series an excellent appleby the the cardinals initiative into the Caribbean Latin American academies that are today in Dominican Republic but also they had a team in Venezuela for five years. So I'll go back and look at the history of those players. Those teams in some of the players that came through like a 'cause Martinez and Oscar Taveras an history. As I mentioned the details of the fifteen man roster are there so folks go through it and they can either agree or disagree. Have detailed article as well about the such address subject. We discussed also looked back at a location that had cardinals baseball in the Nineteen Eighty Springfield Illinois and showed what what losing affiliated baseball meant to that community and some of the challenges that the the Forty forty cities are facing. "From the Lou fuse automotive studios fourteen brands ten locations Seymour. Infused DOT com the Astros were in Jupiter yesterday endemic to Kota Hudson on the mound and this was his first start third appearance and So far so good. He looked really good Yesterday the key to it all and is very aggressive with his sinker. Very aggressive with his fastball. Very aggressive with everything. He's got his own none of the tentative Nick Nibbling and nitpicking at the strike zone and trying to you know outsmart or miss the battle the hitter instead going up there. Santa's as the best stuff I got. I don't think you can hit it very hard or I don't think he can put it past my fielders. Here we go. And that's That's not only a good recipe for spring training. Where guys work on things and work as they're trying to show that they have commanded fastball. Work as are showing that they can be efficient. Guys are trying to build that stamina. That's a very good way for him to go about pitching and it shows the continued improvement that he's made last year with every month reducing that walkway with every month understanding. You know that there's it can be one of the best ground ball hitters in the game. I just asked to stay aggressive with. And that's what we've seen this spring. I Walk Spring for him today. And then you know gone problems. Well it's funny. I mean use your defense right. We always hear that and he did and he got a lot of help. There is a really good play by the young. I thought got overlooked because of what is the play by of the of the Spring by colong. That was an amazing amazing. Play that he made on that double-play through the call that you had on it. I know I said awesome three times. I said one diving a flip to the young awesome awesome awesome. That was I think. Yeah maybe you know what I'm GonNa find it and I'll play it right here in the Middle One diving staff receipts. That is awesome awesome awesome. Not a bad call not my best but now that was a good call. I mean I was happy with it. I am sorry that I missed it in real time. 'cause you know obviously. I was watching the game I I was. I don't know what part of that was the most impressive. So let's take it through. Let's let's do. Csi Golden Glove on this thing. I like all right so ground ball to the shortstop side of second base of which he hesitated to go whether it was going to well. I didn't know what did he think it was gonna hit the mound or not hit them on so that would make you take a different angle with it or you could bump heads with their shortstop going up the middle so there's a couple of things there so he hesitated initially and the ball was a change. That was the other part. Is it. Hit the back side of the mound right and so it gives it that little hesitation that it looks like it's coming much faster or no it picks up speed so it goes a little bit faster than initially thought and so that he had a little hitch and then dove gets on the backhand then does a no look back can pass out of the glove right to Paul. Young's chef as he's crossing the bag the young has to be in the right spot for that but also young was in a position as if the toss was going to be bad and it wasn't and then let them that was the M- He let. It was incredible right right to where it's supposed to be and then young realize. Oh wait you know now. I'm in position to throw and throw the first for the out I don't know which part of that for. Colton was most impressive. Except for all of it was circ- Dosa Cirque du Soleil esque. It was awesome very impressive But I also think Dan. It speaks to a larger thing here two years ago right before Paul Young signed his extension and I can kind of talk shop a little bit here. I knew a little bit about that coming But they wouldn't confirm it so in that morning's paper right the day they were going to announce it at a story about cold and had a long term deal and the young was likely to get one and this was going to be there keystone Combo for years to come which they had not had they had cycled through shortstops For How many years with golden monkey had he had never played back to back one hundred games with a shortstop and before that that they had for years had never played one hundred games with the same second baseman. Never had that kind of stability and one of the thing. Colton Wong told me for that story and this is a couple years ago he goes give us time and then watch how we hotel will be. That wasn't the exact phrase but he said something like you know he's GonNa know I'm GonNa know him better than he knows himself and watch what will be able to do. I just need reps with somebody and and it's clear. Yeah Oh my Gosh that. Play right there. That play is made by basically a married couple at second. Good way to put it in. I was down here in fantasy camp. Oh I guess it's been now about a month. Maybe a little bit over a month ago and they were working with Jose. Oh Kendo for a good hour hour and a half every single day they both have been here basically since December Paul for sure since December and he ended. The hard work pays off. So it's good to see. Let's get some news. Wants to win. Paul a gold glove by the way I know and I think they have a chance and they. It's Kinda interesting that you know. He's like he's got one he'd liked to. You'd like to get Paul One. He wants a second one obvious. Obviously but that's something that golden on Colin's mind. Let's get to some of the news of the day. Andrew Miller Do we have any clarity? And what's happening with his arm shoulder elbow whatever the case may be at this point. We have as much clarity as he does. Which is not the same watch which speaker the larger issue He is searching for answers. He was on a jetty Dan when I spoke to him. He's like look I. I would love to tell you exactly what I'm feeling and exactly why but the same question to ask the same ones I'm not asking or I'm not having a good answer for the doctors which is where we are Not Not all that unusual. I know it sounds more sinister than probably is. But that's what you know that that's sort of what we get now with real time coverage of diagnoses and tests and everything like that like you know. We're we're asking him. He's going through the process partially because that's the news. Instead of waiting for the results that can take quite a while to figure out especially in something like this because no right now. He's gone through tests. Rule things out so Let's see the nerves. Violence BICEPS FILE. You can you. Can you feel hot? Keeps you cold can you? All this stuff all right as carpal tunnel a concern because they recently you know went through that with Red Sea so so they can make an informed kind of test. Now you know. They're starting to rule things out and through that narrow down what it could be. He said you know one of the interesting things he said was they got to figure out you know. Is this something with his extremities meaning circulation kind of issue? But he doesn't throw a baseball with his other extremities. So how's he able to duplicate the feel? Does that make sense? Does you know. He doesn't throw ill if he's having an issue with his right and his left foot he's not going to go out there and throw a slider with it with either of those two tested. So they're going through you know trying to isolate what the deal is. He said it could be anything you know you find it. Maybe there's there's an injury reason he said there could be a mechanical reason. He goes through this quite a bit so they did put under the microscope with all detect that they have here to to try to figure it out. It's very interesting. You know it's a little bit you know. What would it be a little bit forensic science with On a pitcher. And that's what we're going through and I know people want an answer and the one thing that I can tell you is you know I I would like an answer to and fans like an answer. But most of all injured Miller would like an answer and and that's where he's at and until he gets one probably not going to lose fans joined the party all season long at hotshot sports bar and Grill and one of their eleven area locations great food and drink specials available during every blues game. You had an interesting article in the paper a couple of days ago on Yada Year Molina. He had a nice conversation with him. generally speak about that conversation. What you wrote about in extension where he's at in his game this point in his career all those things. What did you take away? I think in a you know. I think we would agree with almost forty but I I've seen a real bounced his gain this. Yes the description that I tried to capture. That plays such delight this year It looks good. He looks fit He puts in a lot of work to do that. continues to put in a lot of work today. You know as has really taken a running and nutrition as a way to keep the weight off and keep youthful vigor. That needs the plate and I mean you you know. He's blocking balls like like he hasn't in previous springs. Moving around really well on those balls in the dirt. Guys are trust them. I mean there's just a lot about his game and I asked him about that. And you know a couple of takeaways like twenty years to be this good. And he's really. It's really important to him to be considered one of the best if not the best defensive catcher of all time he. I asked him about that he said Yes as about the hall of fame he said. I can't lie era I am. It's on my mind something that I think about But it can't be the first thing I think about because that's not what I'm out there for them out there to win and I think his actions sort of backed that up I also asked him about extension. He said you know we know that there's been conversations he said I'm not gonNa tell you there haven't been. He said the balls cardinals court. He has made it very clear to the team that he would like to play for them. And that's it and if they say no then told me I'm gonNA take it home. I'm going to retire and I'll be done. And if they want to go to Andrew Kisner next year then that's their and I appreciate it. Thanks if they WANNA give me a chance to come back and then I'm gonNA prove to them that on the bank and I thought that was an interesting way to kind of look at it absolutely. It's it's a very mature way to look at a to to move it. It it hints at the conversations that are going on at the table when Malone Molina's there with cardinals ownership and the general manager is this is what he's hearing from them you know about wanting to like. Kisner come in and have a part time role and misses. How is is pushing back saying? That's cool but give me a chance to win the job and show you that. I'm the Guy Derek great stuff. There's always great information every day in the paper at stltoday.com and certainly on our podcast daily visits. These have been fun and I appreciate all your hard work. Thanks so much. Yeah thank you for sharing your call on that Dan. I appreciate that again. Don't get to hear it enough so that you know good good job and probably won't be the player of the year but it might be the play the spring well. Let's just put it this way. He's the leader.

"Fourteen pitch at bat where he hooked one just barely foul Landed just about where the Houston. Astros OFFICES. Right about where Jeff Luna's office used to be Just really I mean he's been very impressive and talking with them. Afterwards you know. It goes to parsley his approach. And what they started doing in January and some of the council got from hitting coach. Thalberg who I know is you know what would be the phrase not a Buzzword as name if you will a lightning rod lightning rod or Colonel Nation. That's a good one. That's why that's why you speak for a living in I. Right thank you. The you know. So they've worked together and I I think I wrote about this for Mondays. Post-dispatch using call the young and cold long and in some other information is kind of examples of what we're seeing from the evolution of Jeff Albert as a hitting coach and direction and the edict that the children and the cardinals have given him for the kind of offense. They Wanna be make sense. I thought Austin Ghabra yesterday was fantastic. Coupla what did you take away from his performance. Second time to West Palm Beach where a lefty started. And second time they've been exceptional genesis. Cabrera was similarly good. I thought this was. This was a Austin Gombar in full It's really like a man. Does he have the second best curveball on the team man? Oh Man Liberator in. Gombar have had the two best curveballs. I've seen so far in spring ahead of Wainwright Day. Yes in my mind the ones but I gotta be full disclosure. I haven't done a game with Wayne Right. On the Mound Liberty Laboratory had the added that great one. Yeah Yeah Austin Gombar had the great series. Exactly I just you know. And then he's got so. I talked to Andrew. Kisner there early in camp and I said A. Um You've got all these bullpens. Is there a single pitch that stands out to you? You think is new and improved or new or you think is more effective. Is there one that really stands out? He Goes Oh. Yeah Austin Congress. Cutter he goes. It's not been like that before and I think we saw that today l. Some fastballs up to play better off the curveball sinker down cutter down. I mean there's just a lot like I I think Austin Gombar the great beneficiary of an improved defense him She'll kind of push back on that notion because he said ivory pitcher gets better with an improved defense and I get that. That's that's that's obviously true But you know you got guys who can strike. Folks out on this staff to guard can do that. But calmer can really pitch deep into games with quick out as well as the As well as any lefty. The cardinals have had some time. Make our CEO with that. Same I hope you know about this. The train shed at Union station. And then I'll wrap it up with this. I think the the club and all of us around watching have been extremely impressed with Daniel Leone. What's yeah very impressed You know I am. I'm really struck. By the fact that you know they. They had a meeting here. This past week pitching coaches shows and they were talking about kind of like you know. Stand in the heard a little bit right. Like who are the real starters here? Who are the bullpen guys? How we you know appropriate to meetings about halfway through campaign four days to go before halfway through camp and they they WANNA conversation. We're like okay. Where do you guys really start fit? And when it came to Daniel Daily on. The answer was well anywhere everywhere. He could do anything so. Keep them on the starter scheduled because that might be where he fits and then see what happens Really struck by that that you know that he had come that far eating. Smell the majors possible in the same way that like John. Breviary did a year ago right. That's that's how it feels like a guy who knows. He has options that has no intent of giving the cardinals reason to us. We will see Cabrera and K. K. Kim. Today I'm just GonNa real quick question so you got flirty. Got Ueno You've got Carlos Martinez you got Dakota. Hudson is governor in there is it Hennessy's Cabrera. Is it? Kim? Where where are you going with the fifth starter at this point? You don't think it's only the fifth starter and I agree with that. I go with Ya. I think there's more in play and I don't think it's and I actually think there might be some surprises there. If if the pitching continues the way it does I mean you Adam wainwright going to be a starter Jack Player. He's the opening day starter. Miles Michael's start off injured list. Carlos Martinez has done everything that he needs to do to show that he's a starter and then want him to Mike. Even indicated that yesterday he said Yeah. Carlos is in a rotation so there. That's what I asked him. I asked him that direct question. That leaves Dakota Hudson and a fifth opening right and and I think Dakota Hudson has done a lot to secure his body but that doesn't mean he's not vulnerable to be overtaken and that's possible that can happen especially if they wanna left. You look I I still think that probably the path of least resistance is the way they go and you know the one that would put on Staley own in the Bullpen Kim in the rotation Austin Gombar as the day starter at Memphis with the notion that look. He's got a pitch healthy for a stretch. Which is what they say and mean And then that would put genesis. Brera as the guy who bumps breadth. See so from the ROSPA. Is that where it's edit or and we've talked about this with you. Know Season starts on the injured list and then Cabrera had first got you Derek. Great stuff We'll catch up tomorrow. "Louis I. Yeah and you've written about that before it's got that similar feel similar path and similar. Look that Michael Walk. Ed potentially getting to the big leagues was Thompson. That's that's right. That's right and so while. I said he will make this year. You know you never say never because you know Thompson continues to very very well you know. He could certainly put himself in the picture. But you know as always we still have the con- The covers parts daily amongst other guys who are also fighting for Major League rotation spots. Who SEEM TO BE AHEAD. In the pecking order. It's a nice problem to have the cardinals. Have you know some pretty good minor league pitchers near the top of the system and that's going to sustain them for the next two years and hopefully they can now through subsequent drafts? Kinda back fill a gap that they've had in the system the last year or two when you watch Alex race at least from my I am sure maybe from years you. You see the stuff. It's there every once in a while. Boom you know like oh my goodness there. It is and then it's a spinning curve ball or a wild pitch not a great debut yesterday but just give me your thoughts overall on Alex here is we. We talk now in two thousand twenty. Well you know for how exits command. There's no doubt about his stuff and he was one of the top top prospects in baseball for a number of years. So we're talking about a guy who's a you know? A potential was at one time considered a potential top of the rotation guy but the health. Tom's have been there and he's probably amped up today. You know it was kind of a weird situation where we're number couldn't get through his two innings and they had elhage ready so raise had to wait even longer and so you know it kind of maybe a three month. Injury came a little bit. Maybe he was amped up certainly would have had every reason to be. So you know. He's got to be careful on these first outings of the spring to not be too judgmental. But you know race as a guy that I think everybody's pulling for to you know. Make the make. The cardinals team Probably as a reliever but you know he's a guy that could contribute if he can just be healthy and effective. Yeah there's no doubt folks are polling forum every every which way Let's get into some of the position players. Just what you've seen Dylan Carlson. So far any different look to him. Anything that you're seeing Dylan as you evaluate this team. Well I'd check. I tweeted out. Just a headshot official headshot from Media Day of Dylan Carlson year year. And now he's gone a little bit you can see. He's filling out more as a man but you know in terms of his approach at the plate. He's still showing that that discipline actually switch hitter Does everything well. It's sort of like you know Dylan. Carlson is one of those guys you know. He's not GONNA be a a thirty five or forty home run hitter in the major leagues. He's not gonNA steal forty bases but he's just does everything so well and you know the challenge. Now is to still in my opinion at least let Dylan Carlson. Doing he's a guy eighteen gains experience at AAA. You know the expectations. Are these not gonNA make the team. He shouldn't be considered the guy who's GonNa be the savior of the cardinals offense. It didn't add up and lost Marcella soon. I think that's unfair to Dylan Carlson. So while you know everybody's winning Carlson I just. I'm hoping the expectations aren't be setting being set too high and certainly he's not GonNa let it get to his. He's as as level headed any young man his age. I've ever seen about Nolan. Gorman what have you seen from him you know. Show some good reflexes at third base He's taken good at bats. He hasn't you know his challenge. Last year was Was too many strikeouts on balls away down the zone. Something we've seen them on number Carlos Skaters as well and you know Gorman again realize you know he's never played a game at Aa let alone AAA so for him to be starting Major League games in camp you know. He's just a reminder of his status as one of the top power hitters in in top power hitting prospects in baseball so again going guy who's going to be reading in twenty twenty but you know there's no reason why he couldn't go to pay and has a kind of years at that don't cost last year. I think he has that capability. One of the players said is impressed. A lot of folks in this camp in its early. I mean we're in February but at Mondo Sosa and as it pertains to the twenty sixth man on the roster very interesting what he could do to break camp and go north with the club. Yeah I mean. There's no doubt that is associates made his reputation. You've been in the system for years. He's been a top been our prospect list. I forget now five or six years. This is a six year on our on our prospect list. So you know. He progressed through. The system has always been a strong. Defensive Player was a shortstop still is shortstop primarily but he's also played other positions as the cardinals have got him for the major leaks through a unique situation called fourth minor league option. It has to do with his age and when he joined the cardinals. So-so actually have a fourth option year this year so he could technically be set the memphis but the way he's playing here in the first game we saw a line drive a two run home run to left field Sunday. It was really really impressive. Like a line drive shot over the wall so source is going to make this decision very interesting in my assessment when the cardinals signed Brad Miller a few weeks ago. That hurt the chances of Sosa Muna's to make the roster. Because you look at Tommy Edmund. He sat there are going to have a fourth outfielder. They're going to have a third second catcher. So the question is who's at last. Man is an outfielder. Ron Hill rebel. Who DOES NOT HAVE MINOR LEAGUE OPTIONS? Could IT BE SOSA? Could it be could it? Be Austin Dean could Andrew Kisner the third catcher. It's going to be really interesting to watch how that comes down to the final weeks of camp and I'm sure if we asked Mike show today he'd say yeah. All those guys are possibilities you know. We talked about it on the game today or yesterday. I should say the the seventy three different Players that you have here in camp and how it pertains to the minor league schedule and when it overlaps with the Major League camp and then you've got the major league game. Starting March Twenty Sixth Opening Day in Cincinnati. How do you think this is made this a really delicate and difficult camp for Mike? Shield and Ali goal to kind of navigate through the waters of this. Well Yeah you know. And then obviously their experience at this. Both shelter have run minor league spring training as well so they you know they know how to get all the work done. But I mean. There's a couple of pitchers of veteran major leaguers that minor leaguers. Excuse me to. The cardinals brought in Nobel Chris Neck and in Boston Akeem bostick. Who are Restaur- invitees that they haven't even got into action? So there's just so many guys on the team and we've got the first split game Split Squad game Here on Wednesday. So that'll as well but the problem is more formally about after the first week or ten days of of games guys get sent out an early camp. The problem is Myrlie pitchers and catchers. Don't report until the ninth and position players don't report until two weeks today to four weeks from now until Minor League pitchers catchers report in the first gains. Aren't toe for another week until the eighteenth so you know a week before week or ten days before the cardinals are ready to pack up and leave Jupiter Week. Actually you know before the minor leaguers are actually playing any meaningful game. So you really do these minor leaguers. Who aren't going to see action majorly. Kfi I mean they can go kinda it formally work out but you know the minor league scheduled being so offset and by the way. The Minor League scheduled didn't change this year. They did get rid of step camp but the mining schedule is what it is. The the challenge is the major league scheduled moved up into February to give an OB players more off days during the regular season. What if's Caught your attention with this camp. So far is there anything. That's really grabbed your attention a guy that studies this day in and day out. Well I think the first couple of games we saw it at the. The pitching was in good shape. And you know we still have the guys that you would expect the pitch wealth clarity's in Hudson do well But here in the later games when you get into the into the younger pitchers in you know a couple of the guys that you're hoping to bounce back like you know like a bread see-saw Alex Rae Austin Dahmer. You know they weren't as impressive as you like to see what you know was was overlooked. I think or at least not really focused on well is The home run that Jarrell news hit In Tuesday's game I mean that thing was a bomb. Yeah there was a little bit win that thing off the roof of the by the clubhouse and so I think guys like Munoz who kind of get we get fatigued about them. 'cause yeah they've been around and we know one but you know. I think all these guys are there. You know competing for a chance to make the roster. I hope you know about this. Chinooks rewards him. Well we talked a little bit about some of these young pitchers we had a series where we were recapping the minor league by Baseball H. Q. And one of the most recent stories shows all the tools for the top prospects assistance. So you can see and read your laboratory a top Curb ON THE SYSTEM. Griffin Roberts has a top slider. You can read about the various tools that the pitchers have in the same thing for the hitter. So you know who are the best guys who are the best power guys? Obviously Gourmet on top. But you know there are But intercity for example one atop got prospects for average in the system is catcher Yvonne Herrera. We saw that in Tuesday's game so a lot of good information about prospects even though Minor League Caz an open in. It's kind of this this weird odd period during the middle there's still obviously play action to see with prospects playing in these one o'clock eight described the book that. I talk about that I use on the broadcast and and the work that you put into providing cardinal fans Look inside the minor leagues and in particular the the top prospects for the Saint Louis Cardinals. Yeah the top guy. This is our third year and it's a lot of information that we publish in piecemeal basis plus a lot of new information and of course the colour is write ups on every one of the top fifty prospects in the cardinal system. Plus another dozen. Who JUST MISSED WHO? We think are potential breakout candidates. For example. You know last year. My my super sleeper was on hill. Rondo who became the pitcher of the year in the minor league system but a year ago. Nobody knew anything about him because he was coming out of the Gulf coast but anyway so we focus on the top prospects. We also have a section in the guide where we look back at last season and we look at all the stat leaders hitters pitchers who won awards who were all stars made Major League debuts etc then another section a history section so if you want to know who the key players were taken by the cardinals in the drafts. For the last fifteen years who are the key international players Who won the Kissel award winners? Who are they've been the players of the year in the organization so it's not only guide about this year's prospects but it's also really a good history of what happened both last year and over time across the cardinals minor league system Brian..

"The Cardinal Nation. Twenty twenty prospectors guide and it is a wonderful resource for me on these telecasts to find out who these guys are to get more background autumn. Your team is put this together. You have done a just a terrific job with it. You're to be commended Ryan and I want to start with at least in this conversation. Let's go through your top five prospects. How you came about these numbers and we'll start with number five all right and before I do that. I WANNA mention that of the fifty prospects on our list. The top eleven are all in majorly camp this year. So that tells you you know the proximity of the top prospects in the system to the major leagues. That's not all that uncommon given that you know the prospects typically at the longest track record are those who are closest meters but there's a lot of young talent in spring camp. This year's my point solution to your to your question number five on the top prospect list is kept can catch her Andrew Kisner and everybody knows about Kisner and the reason that he got the number five. We have a where our message board community are fans on the Cardinal Nation site Vote for their own top fifty Derek Short. Who's our prospect analyst who works at Springfield does his list and then. It mindless independently. We take those three and blend them into one Kisner situation is Now that you know that man leader says returned he'll either be the everyday catcher in Memphis which is most likely or they're still an outside possibility that he might be the twenty sixth man feeling that last spot on the Roster Andrews made good progress in the defensive side ostensibly he sort of plateaued out He's more of an average guy than a power guy. But you know there's no reason that Andrew Kisner couldn't and wouldn't step in if you're Molina had to move to the injured list because I think we leaders will be the backup no matter what so you know. There's a possibly that we'll see Andrew in Saint Louis You know at some point in time this year based on the health the other two catchers you've gone with an infielder at number four yeah. Yours Montero added to the forty man roster over the winter. He's actually my number three prospect on my personal list because I think You know much arrowheads. Great potential as a power hitting third baseman. I think as defenses. Good enough you could stay at the position. Although some folks are saying he could be a first baseman. I I think if we look at the needs in Saint Louis Ecorse third base may be a need before I a Monteiro had multiple injuries last year including Hamate bone injury in his hand which takes hitters some time to come back for him he went down to the Arizona Fall. League played regularly down there for about six weeks. You know didn't really get back into his offensive group but Monteiro was the most valuable player in amid Wesley two years ago. And he's a guy that you know start it's Greenfield or they may move him up to Memphis and a lot of that of course depends on what happens with no Gorman because ideally you wouldn't want if you had your druthers you wouldn't have Gorman and my on the same roster so at number three speaking of Nolan Gorman it's his best friend that has been brought into the Organization Matthew Liberty Tower and he comes in at number three on your prospect list. Yeah and liberty again was the guy with the cardinals picked up in trade and they keep up. You know some good town to outfielder Jose. Martinez and Randy arose but Libertarian. Before he joined. The cardinal system was a top one hundred prospect nationally. Really around around top fifty prospect nationally so laboratory immediately as soon as he joined. Karnal system became the top pitching prospect in the organization. Now he's not pitched above class so if he would have been the cardinal system last year for example that would be Peoria so the next logical step liberty for would be at least start the season with Palm Beach. But what we've seen in the past pitchers at Palm Beach if they get off to a good start make six or eight starts and dominate the league. We came in the Texas League before too long and then from the Texas League you know. It's not far to Saint Louis so I don't think we're GONNA see Libertarian. Saint Louis this year. I don't mean that. But if he progresses like they think he will he'll be guy will be talking about next year potentially ticket an extra saint. Louis Yeah that's kind of the path of Cody Whitley. Last year. You know starting out Palm Beach and then rising through the system. Very quickly now. He's a reliever but really did impressed. let's stay on the list though number two on your list is Nolan Gorman nap known Gorman obviously the top power prospect in the system one of the top our prospects in all of Minor League Baseball Gorman's not going to be a guy that's gonna hit forever Jr but he's a guy that can put the ball over the fence and he can drive in runs and you know he again. Finished last season at Palm Beach could go back there or they could challenge him. And you know. I can't wait to see what Nolan Gorman can do in the smaller ballparks of the Texas League and that's going to happen during twenty twenty it's only a matter of win and you know Matt Carpenter's under contract for awhile and he plays the same position is only Gorman but I'm sure everybody would love to see If Gorman put together a year like Carson did last year and get himself injected into the mix for Saint Louis in two thousand twenty number one on your list. No surprise in its Dylan Carlson. Carlson folks who listened to Mondays with MOE again president of baseball OPS. John lack talk about Dylan Carlson. You don't eat of course in the most positive ways possible but also most signal told you very clearly. Hey we think probably the best route is for crossing to get some at BATS AT MEMPHIS. Open the year and go from there now. That could change the course if tyrod Neal Lane Commerce. Maybe just a wins. You know. Don't perform well. Maybe get injured. You know and then there becomes a neat. But the key thing about Dylan. Carlson is. He's GonNa play every day. He's not going to beat a fourth outfield. He's not going to be the fifth outfielder in Saint Louis and he only has seventeen eighteen games of experience. A TRIPLE A. So you know you can go back there. It's not going to be serviced manipulating thing. It's going to be a thing where he needs to get more at bats and play and if that's not going to be in Saint Louis. I found it incredibly interesting. This last Week last couple of days that the cardinals have added a female coach to the minor leagues. And tell us a little bit about her and what that role may be. Yeah this is something that Mark Sacks broke the story about on Monday. The person is named Tina Whitelock. And she's a former Softball America off players South Carolina. The cardinals have a program that they've had for about the last five years and they call it the fourth coach program. Really what it is. It's a fourth coach Slash Scout Program. What they do is they take a a young person who's interested in either being a coach or scout or maybe they don't know for sure what direction for example Mike Schultz a great example of a guy who did both early in his career before deciding to focus on coaching so they take this course coach and they assigned one to Memphis Greenfield. Went Palm Beach area and they participate before the Games in batting practice and all the drills and then once the game starts they change in the street clothes.

"I think that is a That's an entry point to a larger conversation of the and I. I don't know if we're GONNA have it or we're just going to dance around it. On the rule. Technology has played in shaping the game You know you and I've talked in the past asked and I'm a big believer in this that tools that were once used to evaluate players and get greater value and better understanding of what makes a great player are now Controlling the game are now dictating. How the game is played I don't I don't know if that's a bad thing or good thing or whatever but but the style of game that we have now that we watched that we go to the game and see that concern some of us because of the pace of it is really reflective of the hold. Statistics have had an analytics. Had on now shaping the game not just shaping being how we evaluate the game and then tacked plays into that because you can see reading the Wall Street Journal or reading. The Commissioner's report. You can see how you know the Houston Astros. Were like we. We got a tenth man on the field here and that tenth man is Ai. And we're going to utilize is it to absolutely either pushed the edges of what's acceptable or or push pass them as it turns out But also you you know decode the game. That should give us all pause and concern. I totally agree. Now wrap it up with this and then we'll get more into tomorrow on what's happening on the field. Once he's guys finally do hit the field and start throwing their bullpens. MVP and whatnot Most of them are in camp as we speak. But the the twenty six men. How do you think that's going to affect the game and effect Mike Shelton what he can do. Let's have this conversation okay. This is good all right so I I am of a mind that they they have. Ron How reveal that they have purposely. Squirrelled away here to be that twenty. Sixth man you you know. They negotiated a deal for him. Go to Korea to make more money They had that deal in place and then The raise offer laboratory and all that kind of took place where Jose Jose Martinez was part of that deal so the cardinals then quickly backtracked on the deal with Korea told Ron Hell no no. There's a spot for you in the majors. So the implication there is like hey man you got a good chance of being the twenty six men as Jose Martinez Replacement Or else they would have let him go. Make more money money in Korea okay. I think I think it's pretty telegraphed. Right there has been and this is what I wanNA talk. There has been like this like oh how to describe it. But there's there's been speculation that they would go with a third catcher And this has been discussed boasted stltoday.com and in other media outlets I. I'll be honest what I don't. Why what why can you answer that? Why why would they rust? Andrew Kisner why would they have him spectate. What's the benefit? The only thing I can think of is that then you can use leaders from the left side earlier in a game and you're still protected with Kisner late late if Yada you're Molina gets hurt or whatever the case may be an. That's you know. They don't have a lot of lefthanded depth. And that's the only thing I can think of with that I. I'd really be interested in this spring to see if Kisner who is a by trade and infielder before we moved to catch her. Would they give him some time on the Infield just to make him more versatile I. I wonder if that would happen this spring. Yes that that is going to happen. That's been discussed before You know time at third base time at first base he saw some of that. That was You know that was actually actually something yet NAM remembering this correctly That was something that might Athenee started the like. The Live Bat. Wanted to find a way that if he got to the majors you could would use him especially like say September stuff like that so Absolutely that that would make much more sense. However let me let me if I can offer counterargument there With the three batter minimum. Right wouldn't you rather just have a better bat than a left handed bat. I mean look if Matt leaders is a left handed pinch hitting extraordinary like a guy who can and he could be right and he did pretty well at eleven home runs last year. And everything So so you got power but in the way the game is set up now Your I don't I I have a hard I would like to hear the the explanation for why having a left handed bat in the age of three batter minimums especially if that left handed bat. Is Matt weaders is so valuable that you don't get playing time to your top catching prospect. Who needs to get more time behind the plate to be sharper defensively pensively to be to call better games? Who needs that? Experience Kisner needs that experience and I mean he's talent live bat all that stuff but he needs that experience and I'll tell you why he needs experience he needs that experience. If in May YODER MOLINA MRS two weeks or if in July I Yacht Air Molina goes on the injured list and you need a starter. Because Look Andrew Kisner it can be in triple A. and B. Your backup catcher at your if you need somebody for a lengthy period and he can come up and start four out of seven games. Five out of seven games have leaders be the other guy and there's nothing wrong with that that But if you put him on the bench as a spectator and say you know. Here's a ticket to a really good view of the game and don't use him then he can't be that hat guy he any any any any might set back development. I would agree what we'll find out here in spring. Training kicks off today in the players. Have pitchers using catchers have officially reported and We're often running my man thanks. "Dan Great to be back talking about Carl's ninety leak. It is good to be back talking about that. Let's jump right into what's happening now. There are players. Here's down on the fields. In Jupiter with instructional camp would use to be held right after the season but they felt and I think it's a smart move guys are worn out. They they were tired probably wanted to go home. Maybe some homesick and They said look. Let's scrap that. Maybe we get better attention to detail. Maybe we get better teaching if if we hold this right before spring training. And that's what they're doing right now aren't they. That's right. This is the third year of the cardinals. Instructional camp having been moved from September to January. Two weeks Going on now. The first couple of weeks of the year the four weeks of the year with thirty seven players down in Jupiter. I will mention though to a point. You made another another reason why they wanted to change. This was that a number of the players are still working on their college education. And by having instructional camp in September that precludes them from from being able to take classes in the fall term so by having this camp in January. You know those young men who still finishing their college education can get a fall term in and that's the primary reason reason it's another factor because we have to remember the cardinals draft a number of high school players. A number of these players signed after their junior year of college and they still may need another twenty twenty five hours of classes to before they get their important degree which is going to help them of course and the rest of their lives after their playing days are done. Yeah absolutely a lot of people I think are curious about what what instructional camp. What is that? WHO's on the field? Is Mike Scheldt there. Well let's go through that. What is instructional camp for those? That don't know well. It's basically hands on a much more hands on basis of Education and training for a group of players. They typically have classroom INFO classroom information and studying in the morning and then in the afternoon they get out on the field for For individual instructions with the roving instruction works for the system some of the managers some of the coaches and as you mentioned and they're focusing primarily at fundamentals. There aren't any games. The pictures of course are still just ramping up. So there's mostly pitcher's throwing bullpens more often than not it's coaches throwing batting practice Rather than pitchers But the idea is to give these young players Some focus on fundamentals. And let's start and to the point you made before The major league coaches are going to be in Jupiter next week. And they're GONNA be doing they're planning for Major Angelique Spring training camp and so that gives my show and and all you know all the coaches a chance to move over to the backfield's in the afternoon and then get a look at some of these young players so you know last year saw really all the major league coaches Around at different times during instructional camp you know getting a sneak peek at the at these thirty seven when young players brought floor. Yeah I find it really interesting with the guys that are down there. And it's not like every single minor leaguers down there. How do you get selected for the Instructional Cam? Well of course the cars don't say you know what their formulas but I do a lot of analysis of course of the backgrounds of the players and typically they're either players who are emerging urging or maybe some players who might have had injuries last year that they want to you know get them A moving a little ahead. It's not just the players on short season club so I stayed college Johnson City while there's a few of those actually you know the sweet spot of the the group of players are more like the class a high class. I say Along with the number players with Springfield and even some would memphis experience so really. It's kind of a kind of a mixed bag but the names are players that you recognize from Name brand guys like Gorman Malcolm Nunez down to some some lesser names including one young man Picture named Angel Klinka probably on health. Linka who I've not seen it because he pitched in the Dominican Summer League last summer. So we're talking about a young man who's been brought over to the United States. You know for his first I action in the US in this You know highly competitive but highly exclusive instructional camp so I can't just a wide variety of experiences of the players there. I'm also curious because year after year. Now the major league players are getting down there And many of them are already there right now in some of them have bought homes homes down there so they can get there and train well before spring training gets there. I'm curious how many of those guys make their way onto the field. Either to make a speech or go one one on one with a young prospect and talk to a kid and try to encourage them and tell them hey this is what it takes to make it to the big leagues. Well well I can tell you the last year I saw out here Molina there. Of course he has a winter home in the area so miles. Michael is there As well as a number of the you know the former former players who were involved in coaching roles players like Braden looper and Ryan Ludwig. So they're definitely yeah a number of Of players in former coaches around who can provide advice and counsel to these to these young players in structural care yesterday. The cardinals did make a little bit of news. They signed Oscar Hernandez he is a catcher. Does have big league experience number one. What do you think that means for Andrew Kisner and Matt leaders number two and and we'll get it well? Let's answer that. What do you think it means for those two guys? I don't really think it means a lot I think the cardinals wanting leaders back But like last year apparently his market is slow to develop. And so. I think everybody's waiting to see what's GonNa Happen. And if he falls back in the car's lap I'm sure they'd be delighted to have him back but it's going to be you know again on a one year deal at some reasonable reasonable money your Matt leaders former all star. You know. It was definitely did a good job for the cardinals left handed bat last year. You know he's probably looking to a place where maybe he can get a little more playing time than being behind you out of here. Molina which you know as everyone knows plays every day that he possibly possibly can so this doesn't preclude leaders return the signing of Oscar Hernandez really what it does is. It gives the cardinals another veteran guy on a minor league deal. Not Unlike Joe Hudson you know folks may have remembered last year was around and the cardinals always you know have these journeymen catchers Opinion was the guy before that you know who who are around and they can put in triple a. provided more experience if needed now the real question which none of us know the answer to. Is You know where the cardinals feel. Andrew Kisner defenses. This do they feel these defense is good enough that they can afford to have him basically sit out in the bullpen and warm up pitchers and Saint Louis or do they want him to continue to play every day A. and Memphis and it sort of looks like maybe the play every day in Memphis might be the preferred approach certainly if they bring leaders back That would be the approach Roach and now with the case of ours Hernandez they you know. They have an opportunity to go that way. If they so choose now never point to note Oscar Hernandez was on a minor league contract. So if they were to to you know have him on the team he would you know have to be added to the forty man roster but there's always ways to to move that around so that won't be a big factor actor. I think the big question will be. You know. We'll we'll we'll leaders come back and you know where to the cardinals really feel Andrew because there's Catching is and whether they I think you know. Another year in Memphis will be the best answer for his develop. Yeah you took me right to the second part of that question I was going to ask you Before which is where do you think his nerves is defensively is he a major league. Catcher is a major league. Backup catcher. Defensively is he a twenty six man roster guy where do you think he is with all those those options questions surrounding going into spring. I don't think anybody least. Nobody I've talked to has said they believe Andrew Kisner the finished product meaning that that he couldn't continue to grow and to get better so the question of the twenty six is an interesting one because with that extra spot on the roster you know if if leaders came back for example what they could easily do is have Kisner as the third catcher. Therefore you use leaders as a left handed pinch hitter and and he's still have kids that are in reserve if me was hurt late in the game or something so you know. They're still might be flexibility. Even you know to have three catchers on the roster and again I just to go back original point I think Oscar Hernandez is nothing more than a low price insurance policy at this point. You know. They'll probably keep him around. But you know there's not it's not outside the impossibility that if everybody's healthy. Everybody thinks things are going. Well they they you know they might even let him go not indicate. If there's there's nothing really at risk here by bringing another guy in their saloon wound for men you'll receive the perfect haircut complimentary beverage relaxing shampoo. I don't care if you're talking about College Football Basketball Baseball Major League baseball all the NBA. Whatever it's consistency consistency with your coaching staff consistency with your front office and ownership cardinals have that and they have consistency right now with their minor league managers? They made the announcement a couple of days ago. Seven of the nine minor league managers will return in twenty twenty. That's again and again you know it makes sense given an instructional camp is open You know a number of these coaches are down in coaches and managers are down and Jupiter working so they you know pretty well got their systems lined up a couple of TVD's but you know all the managers is you set are in place and most of them are coming back One of the changes inches is at golf city. Scarring at the Gulf Coast League where Joey Hawkins who was a former minor league. INFIELDER came back with a coach hitting coach last year. Now now he's GonNa be a new manager there but the names that everybody knows you know from the top Ben Johnson Memphis joke rusel Springfield Damigella Palm Beach Erica. Monte Jose Roberto Espinosa Spinoza who led Johnson city to a title last year. So all those guys are back. And that's great on the pitching side a lot of stability as well pitching coach side One new person listen to join the organization. This state colleges new pitching coach Dean Kika for who folks may remember was a left handed reliever for the cardinals left a few years ago. You know. Continue to bounce around get a little bit of major major league action here and there but do you think they're seeing a number of organizations now and he's decided it isn't extent is coaching and so he's the new pitching coach at State College now on the hitting coach side just as we talked about stability in management in the hitting coach side pretty much. Everybody's changed chairs. But again I think the top five or six hitting coach's while they're all in new assignments were in the organization previously but then at the lower levels there are four or five new hitting coaches who've been brought in and I think what we're seeing here is sort of you know year two of the of the new kidding regime that the cardinals have a new Minor League hitting coordinator and Rothstein.

"Know. Start to roll out their top prospect rankings. There's no doubt that goes don't Carlson is going to be among and You know the top quarter of the national prospects who are getting a lot of attention but no one government you know is not that far behind. He's around the number fifty a you're so and Noah Gorman got to Palm Beach last year he continue to show power periodically but his strikeouts went up his walks went way down own and he's just a young pitcher again claire. Excuse me WHO's dealing with pitching and more advanced level and you know when you're talking about ice we're still in their teens You know there's no concerns at all about No development and so you know for him. Twenty twenty is going to be his year. Like Carlson's was last year he step into double A.. A hitters leak but You know much better a level of pitching as well is is this GonNa be the year that Nolan ornaments gets forward and really you you know goes to that next level like dealing cost twenty twenty pretty exciting absolutely. You came out with your prospect list. It's outright now at the car. DONATION ALL NATION DOT COM. Give our fans and idea of how you came about the top five and who are the top five for the Saint Louis Cardinals in your cardinal nation top. How five list? One of the things I really believe in Dan is that prospect ranking. There's no right or wrong I mean there's it's opinions educated opinions but it's still opinions and you you and I might look at the same group of players and ranked them differently and so the idea is to get different opinions so myself garrick shore. WHO's one of our experienced writers who lives in the Springfield area and and sees almost double eight games as well as our export? We have a message board community of fans who are very knowledgeable about the minor leagues and they had their own process process where they pick their own top prospect list. And I melt those three lists together into one and that's how we come up with a site rankings Carlson's number one no no doubt about it. Gorman number two no doubt about it then the question becomes wears glares Montero the third basement who was You know the MVP of the Midwest Wesleyan twenty eighteen hurt his hand last year and really lost a whole year He's number three. But there's debate about that and then really what I think is one of the most interesting questions at one that will wanNA watch all year this next year. Who is the heir apparent to your Andrew Kisner. Who's you know who basically took over that role in car? Kelly was traded or is it young Yvonne Herrera another teenager who really really stepped up. His game You know play well. Curry played better Palm Beach Showed himself very well against much older players in the Arizona. Fall League and so right now. The the top five are Monteiro take three Kisner four and Herrera five but we were not unanimous that Herrera effector short beliefs Herrera has already cast Kisner in that catching hierarchy irk. Wow that's that's pretty high praise when you think about that. I am very curious curious in watching spring training this year and if with twenty six men added to the roster of the major league clubs in Kisner has an infield background if if they carry kisner would they maybe one him and I know they want him to develop as a catcher but get some time on the infield what happens with Gorman and Monteiro hero to third baseman. I think that's kind of fascinating as we move along in spring training in probably in the first couple of months of the regular season. You're right it'll be really fun. Watched in and the thing about Kisner Kisner played some first base. But he really didn't do he hasn't really done it. He didn't do it list last year and so I don't know if it's something they'd given up on her like you said they want want him to just get every single inning behind the plate The idea and the twenty six percent loses intriguing especially if they get mad leaders or equivalent back Jack and when I say or equivalent I mean a guy who can hit from the left hand side of the plate and be a credible pinch hitter because that was how they wanted to use. I him last year but without another catcher you don't WanNa burn your backup catcher so if you had a third cat on the bench I you Kisner then then you could use a wieder as a pinch hitter in a key situation now the downside of that is as the third catcher in major league roster and Yada. You'RE MOLINA PLAYING EVERY A in Sunday's not gonNA get any more experienced catching other than sitting out in the bullpen work guys. What was your top five stories or at least your main stories as you look back at twenty twenty and I know you've you've given a dove into those categories as well with the Saint Louis Cardinals and the minor leagues from this last year? Again before I get that I didn't answer your second question. So could I. I WANNA go back to hear it. Yeah you about the third baseman and as you correctly noted it you know it looks like known. Gorman is going to be ready for Springfield but given Montana's lost year you move him up to Memphis and by the way. There's already a couple basement Eastman at Memphis as well in in Mack truck and Evan Mendoza. So how do you move all the pieces around. You could start a both a and you don't have you know have them rotate between You know Third Base and designated hitter when they play American League teams and chances are if Montero back goes well even if he started spend. Maybe the first month of the season at Springfield you'd you'd figure he would be in Memphis pretty quick anything is. He's now on the forty man roster so there's motivation to you. NOPE look him up and and get a look to see whether he's going to be a guy to contribute in the future absolutely. Thanks going back to that because I know a lot of fans are curious about that. Let's talk the top stories. What were your top stories on the Cardinal Nation Dot Com if I look back at the top stories of the year And sometimes I have ten or fifteen eighteen or twenty this year. It was hard for me to cut down but I went with ten and I started. We looked at In these are free way so folks can go read them and look at them. I started with a discussion of Jeff. Alber in his impact on hitting gnarly at the major league level but the minor league level as well Number nine story was about the strange case so Carlos Martinez in the last couple of years and all the injuries and the fact that everybody wants him to start but for whatever reason he hasn't been able to do it yet number eight. We we talked I talked about the bullpen and how important the bullpen was twenty nineteen cardinals and the fact that they were able to overcome the loss of Jordan Hicks. Who is one the best in baseball in Ju number seven The defense the defense of the cardinals again. It's not as easily suitable but you watch them play every inning all season long you know how that improved in the defense was just a huge factor in the in the twenty ninth one team number six looked into the top rookies. So Tommy Edman Was Of course important one In the bullpen Japan. Giovanni guy goes to Hudson in the rotation these three guys were key contributors to the team and they weren't guys that we thought coming into the year necessarily. We're GONNA play those kind of rules number five story. Tim going into the hall of fame. I mean that goes without without speaking. It probably could have been should have been higher Number Four Jack clarity gentler emergencies. The as the second. Half that he had of the season was just unbelievable. Heavy pitch like that all year. He would've won the Cy Young Award Number three story the fact that the cardinals offense really underachieved. I mean from pretty much from top to bottom other and cold wrong. There wasn't a hitter on that in that everyday lineup that performed above his career norm and the importance to figure out. Not only how to get Matt cartner going again but Paul Goldschmidt who led the team in home runs. RBI and slugging but had the worst Paul Goldschmidt season ever so while Paul Goldschmidt was at the top of the cardinal heap. It wasn't the kind of Paul Goldschmidt Year. Offensively debt you would hope to see from him. defensively a huge factor for for the for the Infield and. I'm not saying that. In any way that I'm looking down at the Paul Goldschmidt trade it all but I think he can and do more with the bat number two story Mike. She'll be named the manager of the year in the National League in his first managing. Who would have thought that that was? That was possible. The you know the leadership that Mike should provide was obviously a key factor in the success of the team and then the final number. One story was just you know how the team did this year over cheating a winning bingos nine hundred games that division getting to the final four well as we look ahead to next week you'll be down in Jupiter and it's instructional camp isn't it that's right AH thirty five. Typically players The most high potential ones in the system abroad in used to be instructional camps in the fall and they found that ain't players are tired. They replayed long Collared Season High School season once we were drafted and even the ones who were in the system. You know played their minor league schedules. And they found that they got veteran. -struction by bringing the players. Here's in the first of January for a couple of weeks of drills in individ- individualized instruction and of course the Minor League player development side runs a camp but typically typically that I've seen every year I go. The major league coaches were there as well so Mike Sheldon Mike. Maddox all the guys are down there working with young players as well.

"There's one near you hair saloon for man. Let's also talk a little bit about the news reported by. Derek recalled the post-dispatch out in Arizona at the the GM meetings but there was indications that Yada you're Molina would want to play beyond his contract which is up after this season season. Which I I've been surprised that it hasn't gotten more attention? But that's neither here nor there and he's talked about maybe twenty twenty two playing through that season. which would I'd be next year? Then Annette to other years it would take him past forty. He's an iconic player. He's not gonNA wear another uniform. It just won't happen I I don't don't think that would let that happen or more The rest of the the franchise. So how does that affect in your opinion Andrew Kisner and his let's say Immediate availability if they want to go out and make it de-uh because I think Andrew Kids there's GonNa be a very very good player. You mentioned a young man that competed needed in the Arizona. Fall League that had a great folly for the cardinals. That's coming up. You know it it. It does Kinda complicate things it complicated located the Carson Kelly situation to an extent what what do you think happens going forward with how they deal with young players and some that are here Kisner and how this make you know stunt growth or maybe manipulate the roster going forward. Why did the first question Dan is going to be? How are they going to handle the reserve position? Asian behind Yati in twenty twenty. Absolutely you know we thought Kisner might be a year ago at this time we thought. Hey you know Kisner might be the the reserve. Yeah maybe the Senate back to Memphis but maybe they won't maybe they'll you know he'll he'll be in the major leagues and as it turned out. Of course they signed that leaders You know late fairly late and He did a great. HIV backup came up. There was an injury or in September. Now 'cause there's got another year of experience I think everybody would pretty much say you know there's not a lot for him to be you know to gain gene bye-bye going back to AAA for another year now on the other side of the coin. What's important for young players from a business? Perspective is minor interleague options. Typically an organization has three years after they had a player to the forty man roster that they can send them back and forth between the miners in the major leagues. Andrew Kisner still has two option years left so you know if he got stuck you know they could in fact sent him down again in twenty twenty and again in twenty twenty one but you know you sort of reach the point of diminishing returns as with Carson Kelly where they say. Hey if there's not going to be a win for the guy to play then maybe we're better off trading eating in and translating them into an asset that helps us at a on another area where we need more help so I think the key question will be how fast will Iran Herrera develop up. He's probably got a good shot at catching AA this year. And if he continues to progress as he is and if Molina decides to stay long maybe Kisner becomes you know expendable and they can use him in a trade for for something else and VP's and the guys that you look at that have been in that conversation. Asian Yada you're Molina that have been icon ick With the group. You just don't see them go away I think a name this offseason. That's going to be talked about already. Has Been a little bit as you know writers and various people around the game. Say Well you could make this deal for mookie betts or you could make this deal for player acts. You could do this. You could do that the name that always comes up is Nolan Gorman Tell tell our listeners. A little bit about the year that he had and we saw him in spring training Get get some time and impress because he hit a couple of monster home runs for those on the backfield's or those watching games But yet he's he's kind of a `Nigma I think for fans at follow the Major League club tell us a little bit about Nolan Gorman and this young third baseman that has a chance to you know maybe maybe breakthrough in the major leagues in a year or two. I guess I would summarize it. Dan I think Noah Gorman is a player for this generation gene and. What I mean is strike outs? Don't matter that much at least when I used to and what matters are home runs and if you look at Nola Gorman he's a guy that definitely has the capability to hit. Thirty home runs a year in the major leagues and Picky. Billy maybe you strike out two hundred times. But that's not a bad deal. He's a middle the order Kinda Bat. He plays demanding position at third base. That the cardinals don't have a future for right now. I mean you know Macarthur already in his thirties and so you know the thinking thinking has been about the time that carpenters ready to be done. Norman Gorman we'll be ready to take over third base Lewis Saint Louis Cardinals. He did not have a spectacular year in twenty nineteen He started off well Peoria then he got challenged in In Palm Beach High but still he was an above average hitter in terms of its productivity. Chevy those levels and again. We're talking about a guy who still you know. Extremely young playing at at high level against older players nineteen years old playing in high as don't likely start twenty twenty at at Aa At the age of twenty which is the same kind of progression. That we saw Dylan Carlson on so I I think yeah no luke warm and if I if I'm another team wanted to make a trade with Saint Louis Cardinals Carlson and I ain't going to bring up but you know I would think it would have to be some kind of knock them over crazy kind of move to to trade No Gorman at this point and they're not GonNa do it for a one year rental player there's just not what now than it was a rental player. But they wouldn't have brought him in if they didn't have a high level of confidence that they convince them stay which happened before pogo awesome even ever set foot to play in a home game at Busch Stadium. So you know folks talking about a mookie Betts for example who's in a similar situation one year left before free agency CPAC has made it very clear he intends to test free agency. And you know. I don't think the cardinals would want to bring in a guy with that kind of risk. You know giving up a town future talent. Mike older but I just don't see it a lot of talk around baseball stealing signs. It's been around the game since well since they started the game it. Just they didn't have cameras back. Then what did you think about here in that from the Houston Astros. And then how it pertains to what you see sometimes in the minor leagues well Thanksgiving is something that you know goes goes on in the game all the time but you know. It's one thing for a runner on second base to to see a signal and and you know flash tip to the hitter versus having surveillance. They don't cameras and video monitors in dugouts and you know actions that clearly involved people who are off the field trying to cheat And you know the asked US maybe not the only ones who did this but the evidence is mounting very strongly that this was something that was done over a period of time that had to involve non uniformed personnel. And I think baseball's going to have to look at this and do something rather than just just talk about it because You know the the technology can be used and it can be abused in this case clearly. It's it's being abused and it's it's just not right finally folks find it? The the Cardinal Nation DOT COM mentioned. We're working on the countdown on the top. Fifty prospects When folks to arrive in the next few you hours they'll see my little five preview so we'll talk about that probably on the next Next call next week but the rule five draft is an opportunity for organizations just to look at players who aren't on forty man rosters and bring them into their organization but of course there's risk on the other side if a team doesn't protect Some they're young players. They could be locked so it's an important time of year that culminates draft which occurs at the winter meetings which will be on the twelfth. Thank you sir. We'll catch up next Wednesday appreciate it..
