"Work for everything he got and he had to kind of establish that mentality of being a grinder and the hardest working guy while also being the most skilled guy on the ice, right? And basically had to wait his turn to be able to show that skill. So you kind of check all of those boxes, but I do wonder the NHL has such a problem with just basically recycling old head coaches who have been relatively successful once upon a time, even if that happened to be ten, 15, 20 years ago, just because you can only seemingly higher one out of 35 guys who are qualified for some reason. Do you think we'll see teams, especially rebuilding teams, embrace the idea of bringing in a former player who hasn't been out of the game too long that can relate to the players that might not necessarily have experience or be thought of as being an X's and those expert tactician tactician, but it sees the game and thinks about the game well enough to at least put those young players in a position to succeed. Do you think that's going to become more of a thing as all of these rave reviews keep coming in about San Luis? I hope so for players who are deep thinkers, right? Like I think as much as things went awful during the playoffs for them like Andrew Burnett did a great job taking over last year out of nowhere with Florida and they continued to play conville system and excelled all year long. Until the playoffs, of course, where they fell apart. But we'll blame that on them losing ten to two, I think, to the Canadians in the last game of the season. Yeah, that broke them, yeah. Clearly, none other players were in the lineup. That's what broke his team. But yeah, I hope that we get to see that because I feel like we've had some failed opportunities with former players in the past. I feel like more of them are more suited to coaching than management. There's no reason why the way Wayne Gretzky sees the game shouldn't have translated to being a good head coach unless he had no support from his assistance, right? That's going to be an important thing. I think he just couldn't communicate it. That's probably true too. He's not a great communicator. That's pretty evident from his TV appearances. No offense. I mean, I think it just comes like, I think it honestly, it did come much easier to him, especially from a younger age than it did, Marty St. Louis, I think it's tougher for a player like that to put themselves in the shoes of the struggling player who's trying to figure out the ropes on the fly that HL level. That's true. Maybe Gretzky should be a skills coach. Maybe that's what he should try out, but I mean, obviously he's going to continue being a commentator. But having a player who's been through those experiences and seeing the ups and downs has to be an advantage. And I think one thing we're probably see as the Canadians go from rebuild to trying to compete is you might see more experienced players take the roles of the assistant coaches just because Alex burrows, no offense to him, obviously great player, but hasn't done a lot on the power play so far. And robida, who's their defensive coach, rookie coach, right?

"And his employer didn't give him the green light to go talk anywhere else until 8 of those were filled, he'd be pissed. And I'm sure I haven't talked to Andrew since the change was made public. I'm sure he is. And I'm sure he's, even though it seemed obvious, I'm sure he's rather blindsided. Yeah. And look, you don't have to mention a specific team or whatever. I mean, we can speculate moving forward here. Andrew Burnett is a good coach. If I were a team that had a coach on an expiring deal, going into the final year of his contract, and I was a little bit unsure or a lot unsure, I'd be looking at him closely. You know, just to bring him in, right? Maybe he starts as an assistant or an associate coach, but isn't that just good business to have an insurance plan, potentially in place if you need it? Not to say that the guy going into his final year is going to get dusted. You know, maybe they have a great year and you extend that coach and Burnett can stay or go somewhere else. But to me, if he doesn't get one of the openings, as head coach, he'd be a real nice insurance policy. I think there's going to be some opportunities that will spring up. He's got to be ready to take them though. And so right now, you haven't even talked to anybody because he couldn't. Wasn't allowed to. And so whatever is else is out there, he doesn't even have a feel for what that might be. I mean, there's still how many drakes how many openings are there still? There's Boston. Chicago Detroit and Winnipeg. So it's just down to four. Yeah. So those guys, I assume, when I say those guys, those teams, they're already down the road on their interviews. With whomever it might be. Oh yeah, Barry trots is still there..

"Maybe not not egregiously, but it's unfortunate. It's not. It's not, but you know, automatically, when you see something like this of this magnitude, that's what social media is about. We need to enact change. This can never happen again. So you've got all these theories. Well, maybe it's time that hockey operations took over and they review every single goal. Aside from the obvious ones, maybe it's a breakaway or whatever. You know, puck crossed the line. Yes, was it offside? No. Were there too many men on the ice? No, okay, good goal. Away we go. But, you know, now you're adding another layer to the robotics of what NHL officiating is. Mistakes happen. This, this was a steak. Do we really want to go back to three and a half hour games? We don't end up having. And let me tell you, let me add this in. So the only way review helps on that case is if the rule is then called area. Right. Which we just or I just talked about, the international rule, and people will hate it. They'll hate it. So I think most people felt Victor hedman was tripped in the third period and should have been a penalty. Yeah, there were a few in the third. Right. So do we like that? Or do we want those penalties called? I prefer that penalty to be called. I prefer the trip McDonough tripped up kadri coming out of the corner. I prefer that to be called. I'm surprised you're not more pissed off about that. And that doesn't drain. You have no skin in the game because you're always saying, look, if it's the standard game one, then call it in game four of the Stanley Cup final. Everybody's complaining about this too many men on or off the ice should be shouldn't be. They forgot about the other stuff. That's how our attention span is. We forgot about the other stuff that was 25 minutes earlier in the game. That's the stuff to me that's more important. I do think the league should take control of every goal. I don't think there should be coaches challenges. I think it should be PAC goes in the net. You're looking for a couple of things. Was the entry into the zone fine? Like not offside? Was there a high stick around the plate? Was there goalie interference? That's it. But you can't go back and say, was there a trip on the play? Was there a, you just can't. You just can't. I agree. All right, big news out of Florida. By the way, Paul Maurice, head coach of the Florida Panthers will be joining us momentarily to talk about a lot of things. You know, this is a tough one for you, right? Because, you know, I know you're a big fan of Paul Maurice. You know, you talked about how articulate he is. I mean, we're going to have the two best communicating coaches in hockey period in the same state of Florida, you know, the polymerase joining the Florida Panthers. But this one probably stings a little bit for you because you and Andrew Burnett have a long history..

"I'm not gonna be home for it anyway. So maybe nobody was really, I'm gonna tell myself nobody was really in the cycle of thinking about it yet. Okay. Brian mudrick is a constant. Randy doing. Our Instagram or Instagram Instagram prompt was what you got this week. So money isn't asking a question. He just replied. He said, I got 44 on the front 34 on the box. That's what he got. Muddy's good too, he loves to play. And he's got his dog, sir pops with him everywhere they go too. Yeah. Does he take them on the cart? Is he on the golf course? Oh, I think he probably will. He's probably, I think muddy's got a little one of those carriers in all. They can go anywhere. He does. Yeah. Okay, let's wrap up ask green drinks anything with a more serious hockey question. This one comes from at dragon's quest, Jamie weins. Who's asking a Florida question, a couple of questions. Do we think that bobrowski will be traded? And who will be the new bench boss in Florida? And man, it just feels weird that we even have to talk about it, given the fact that Andrew Burnett takes over under triumph, trying to circumstances with Joel kenville pushed aside or stepping aside. All he does is coach the crap out of the Florida Panthers, right? They win the president's trophy. He's a finalist for the Jack Adams. And the Florida Panthers now are interviewing for the next head coach of the Florida Panthers. I mean, it's a bizarre situation. It is. At some point, directness is probably the best tact. Yeah. And so if you're, hey, we really like what you did, but we might like somebody better. At some point, pretty quickly here, you've got to have some clarity because if they decide, which is their choice that brunette's not going to be back and of course I'm biased. My buddy, but they've got to tell them. So he can make a decision on his future. Whatever that might be. And that's really how that coaching scouting world works as you tell somebody in advance at the end of their contract. So they can start putting a little shovel in the ground to get on to the next job. So whether, I mean, next coach, you may, you know, you may have a gut feel on that more than others. Is it brunette? Is it somebody else? But they've got to clear that up somewhere. I think they believe Spencer knights there. Yeah. You know, it's their goalie of the future. But that's a $10 million cap hit. Yeah. So would they move them? Sure, maybe, but how and where? So what's the Drake? What's the, can you take back 50% of.

"9 vacancies. I would say that you see two where you're like, wow, really nice to see that guy get his chance. Another one that I'm not starting a rumor here, DJ Smith. In Ottawa. I don't know. I don't know. I don't fall close enough attention, but is he guaranteed a job next year? I would imagine. I don't think anything's guaranteed because with melnick's passing. It's like, who knows what's going to happen with that team? So yeah, there's going to be a lot of turnover in that position and more so than ever you're seeing that. Like every year, it's just like 8 or 9 guys. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. Yeah, I don't think DJ Smith did anything wrong. I mean, you know, the Dorian's got to get him a number one goaltender and he hasn't had that. That handicaps a coach. I don't think he's going anywhere. He cares to find a Pierre McGuire. Yeah, well, there you go, but John Heinz naturally, he's also without a deal, but you got to think they're going to bring him back given the way he's the job they've done this year. Just give you the head coaching job. Seriously, play a coach. One of the note on Bruno Andrew Burnett, he's going 44 15 and 6. He's technically his contract wasn't as an assistant. They did give him a salary bump. But if they go on a run this year, you got to think they're going to probably rip that up and give a nice deal. We'll obviously see what happens with it. But hopefully going forward, yeah, they do just squash the fake Giroux sitting rumors. Or were those true? No, he sat in the third period of that game. He did. So, I mean, who knows what happened? I don't know what he did to get sad, but he did take a little break as from some playing time. All right, let's see. We already mentioned the frozen four. Congrats to boy Rudy and Denver. Sunk that Mikey Jean was going to ride around Manhattan. A bunch of free agents. I'm sorry, a bunch of college sign that's happened after because Michigan, we mentioned a handful of guys already been drafted. This one was no secret defenseman, Owen Powell, buffalo's number one overall pick last year, signed his entry level deal. He's going to shoot up for his fourth team this calendar year tonight in Toronto as a matter of fact, pretty awesome. He's a mississauga native also played for Canada in the world junior world junior championships which were canceled that the Olympics teammate Maddie Benes is a billionaire of beignets gee, I know it's got the panniers. I've heard of said both ways. Maddie bananas, the number two overall pick by Seattle last year, a local lad as well. He did the same. Now he's going to join Seattle this week going to win number ten. He had 67 points in 61 college games, and they had teammate Ford Kent Johnson, Sam of Columbus. They took him 5th overall last year. And this kid, this is a nice story here at Columbus also signed Michigan team captain and undrafted free agent defenseman Nick blankenberg to a one year deal. He just finished his fourth year. He was a walk on it, Michigan. He fucking never get drafted by any junior teams. Ended up playing in the Alberta, junior Hockey League, where finally caught some IZ ended up going to Michigan was a walk on, made the team ended up getting a scholarship later. He turned down in NHL deal last year, and now he's signed a Columbus. So a nice little story there with. Yeah, I love seeing that. And if you're not drafted in the top two rounds, I think you're better off not being drafted, especially if you're going to go play college hockey. All of a sudden the kid is admires from Minnesota G is that his name? Yes, that's correct. Yeah, he's like, he's basically interviewing 30 different teams. He's going to be the one, it's going to be the opposite of the draft, where eisenman's offering him bong rips. He's going to be able to ask the team's question and where am I getting my weed? Yeah, exactly. What are you going to get my weed from? So I actually saw a guy in the NCAA title game. I'm reaching out and talking to you right now. His name is. His last name's livingstone. He's number 23 big D man on Minnesota state Mankato. I like his game a lot. Not his skating. He's not the fastest skater, but he's very smooth, logged a ton of minutes, good with the puck, and he's a sophomore, but he's an older sophomore, so I was talking to a couple skeleton. They're like, yeah, everyone has a lot of interest in this kid, but he wants to go back to school. I'm sorry, you got to leave school livingstone. He got to leave school. You can always go back to school right now the way I just saw you play. You know, girls are tough national loss in the national title game, but the numbers he had this year. It's like strike while the iron's hot. He's a kind of reminded me like Chris tanev a little bit, just a big righty that a ton of teams that I've interested in more than anything I'm talking to these guys who I know a lot of times want to go back to school. And if you're a drafted player, that may be changes a little bit because you already have the team that is going to be able to sign you and have interest in bringing you into the fold and the year or two whenever it is if you do go back. But these kids who are free agents, you never know what's going to happen. You never know what happens next year. He goes back to school, say, man kato isn't the same team. And I love my case things a guy I know pretty well. He's the head coach of Mankato. He's probably gonna hate my guts for telling one of his best demon to go back. UFA defenseman and forwards in college undrafted, you leave school and you go and you give it a run and you sign when you can because you never know what's in store. So I think that people will disagree with me on that, but it's my opinion. No, I mean, that's what I would do personally, but then you talk to people and you find out their story and even you see it with some guys who end up going the NFL route, they wait those two years, they get that development and they don't rush into something where they got to work out the nooks and crannies to where it wasn't at the professional level where you kind of just get thrown to the wayside a little bit sometimes if you don't develop as fast as you think and all of a sudden the next thing you know you're getting thrown in a deal, you're in the next minor system. I know but you're saying you're saying like if he doesn't necessarily care about the schooling right now, but he wants the money to eventually pay back and get it. Yeah, then it makes it a little bit of sense, but if it's more from the development standpoint, I can understand why certain guy certain guys do. I agree with you on that. So it depends what you're thinking is, but you always take the guarantee and then I could at least afford to pay it for it on my own and kind of live happily ever after as opposed to like all of a sudden none of it's being offered because you had a fucking horrible season all of a sudden everyone forgot about you or God forbid a significant injury. I should not have said everyone I should have made it more individual to this kid who I watched because I see a lot of attention on these. I think he's 22 and it's like put your right. There are a lot of kids who maybe going back for their senior junior year having the chance to sign with any team they want. It is a good thing. So I kind of over spoke there, but this one kid, it's like, dude, you're ready. You're a big defenseman. Get to that next level. And right now with all the interest in you, it's probably time. And he's got the option to which team he can go to and step right into a one way. No, I don't think you'd get a one way because it's an entry level deal. So you're going to have to have the AHL deal, but he would be one of those instances where these kids sign and part of the deal is you're going to play like ten games up this season in the NHL, which burns a year off your deal and gets you NHL games right away. So you got to imagine the hobie hobie bacon when it tried McKay is going to get locked up quick too..

"Hill. I just don't look like me when you're 40. All right, moving right along. Let's talk some coaching stuff. It was a clip that was online last week of my tenth St. Louis showing Cole caulfield a little trick on the power play. Fake the shot back up a little bit, boom fire away. And I think it was the next game. He did exactly that. It was so prophetic when he's seen the clip, and then what he did. And of course, you know, people wonder Mindy St. Louis, he's going to come back. He hasn't officially said it. He said that he's going to talk, I think at the end of the season right now, it wouldn't be fair for the players for anyone for me to focus on that. Things will take care of themselves. Let's just stay the course on what we're trying to do now. I can't imagine he's not going to be back. I mean, the way he's been this team has responded to him. I think he can get a multiyear deal based on the results. But Andrew Burnett, he's another guy, man. He's come in, gotten the job done. You got to think he's going to sign a multiyear tilt. Yeah, so I'm not sure. I don't know about the brunette one. I mean, if they get knocked out first round, you got to think with that group of guys, you want to try to go for like maybe somebody with more experience. Now, I think the players have a lot of say, just like that's why I think saint Louise and no brainer and he's got that job locked in. I think looking back at an even more genius move because like what did you have to lose? You would have had a former player who would have came back and brought back, hey, what are your individual opinions on each of these guys? Over the last little bit, and it just seems to be that, and I've talked to a few of the players. I'm not going to name names, but he's communicating with them on a peer level. The communication in meetings is more open forum where he's not set in his ways. He's saying like, well, this is how we did it. Is that how you guys feel comfortable doing it? No, okay. Well, let's run it from the other side then and we'll run this play. So the players feel more involved, more comfortable. More one on one teaching, like you saw in that clip and I mean, it's remarkable to turn around some of the players and the team has had and what they've been able to do with him around. And it just seems like it's so much more enjoyable to go to the rink. And if all things considered, he's not the head coach next year. It's because he doesn't want to be. That's the only way I could think about it. Maybe he wants to go back to coaching his kids. He maybe just kind of wanted to see what it would be like, but he checks off every single box at this point. Who knows? Maybe they saw them over to the assistant role. Maybe they bring in another type of head coach guy who can maybe kind of ping Pong each off of each other. Because it's just the title at the end of the day, but remarkable what he's done with the turnaround. I'm not sure about brunette. In talking with people, there could be up to 9 coaching vacancies. Like, I don't know. I don't have enough information on the inside. Like, I don't go pick information off like people and say, hey, you know, what's your organization feeling about this guy? Is that how I say it? Blossom. Fucked that one gets me every single time. I've never heard that type of last name, but you got a Canadian name, too. You got to imagine maybe they spiced things up and going a different direction. Let's say, let's say, Colorado doesn't get to the Conference Finals. What do you think bednar is the head coach there next year? If they lost in the second round. They lose first round. He might lose first round. He could be in trouble. See you later. Lindy Rodney. I'm sorry, but it depends on fashion you lose and I would say, you know what I mean? If a guy can absolutely, but I'm going over possibilities in which we've seen in the past a little bit that are just, it's not like it's that far fast, which I mean, if they meet Vegas first round, like who fucking knows, right? Somebody's got to lose. I don't think that Lindy ruff's going to be back. With New Jersey. The bonus in Dallas has no contract. Bonus in Dallas, you probably have like yo, I would say yo, it's probably not coming back. And the list goes on and on. So the reason I brought it up too is because despite is a good of a job he's done and much like Martin St. Louis, Elliott Friedman was also talking about how its new regime there and it wasn't exactly the hire of Rutherford. And I'll tell you what if Bruges not back next year, I'll be a little bit shocked with the turnaround they had, but I also got to trust the opinion on a guy who's kind of been the quarterback on creating two different types of organization Stanley Cup winning championships. He got the two ripper and pet, but before that, it was in Carolina in Carolina. So boom, there's another one. Anyone else you can think off the top? Dallas, I don't know if he's going to be secure because he was hired by the previous regime. And he might want his own guy. There's another name. There's another one. Woodcroft has been unreal, but you never know. There's so many questions. The one good thing is our boy Rick talk it. I think he's going to definitely have his option to have a chance to be a head coach again next year. And I'm sure guys are smart enough smart enough Jesus Christ, biz, figure it out. Smart enough. But the Russian smart enough guy. But yeah, man, yeah, he probably has the right people in his ear being like, bro, take a year off, decompress and wait till you see the fucking options you get thrown out. You a 100% fuck. I think I might be up for a job. I mean, if the leafs lose first round is Keith gone. Gonzales. If not, it's management. Somebody seemed to happen, but I would say that, yeah, they would have to then hand it over to somebody who has more experience. He's gotten two rips with it. Especially if you can't get over the first round. So who would you say is the most locked in head coach in the NHL right now? I got my pick that like no matter what happens this year. We'll not be fine. John Kublai. Oh shit. I'm so stupid. It is coop. I was thinking Brendan Moore too. Yeah, Brendan. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. But yeah, that's so dumb on me not saying. Guys, question for you guys. Do you think with the success that Martin St. Louis has had and his lack of coaching experience, you'll start to see teams take more chances on former partnerships. I saw Sean Avery post about this on Instagram as well. I don't know why former players don't get hired as head coaches more often. I really don't, especially guys who have been really high level players. And I know a lot of people say, well, being a great player doesn't mean you're a great coach. Well, I mean, I'd rather take a risk on a guy who was a great player and really into coaching, whether he's coach of peewee or some level of pro, then some guy who's never played before, maybe that's maybe that's bias on me being a player, but I agree with that. Yeah. And 50% of the component is being good talker and motivator and now, especially nowadays, right? Yeah, exactly. These kids, right, that's half the battle. So I would say yes, gee, and I think that of the 9 candidates. Let's say there's 9..

"andrew burnett" Discussed on The Lead

"Well, Michael a few weeks ago, we did an episode here on the lead about the sexual assault accusations surrounding the Chicago Blackhawks and former video coach Brad Aldrich that was during their Stanley Cup winning season back in 2010. And the coach of that black hawks team back then was Joel grenville, who, of course, was the Florida Panthers coach at the start of this season. He was forced to resign in the fallout from all of that. Joe glenville offered his resignation to the Florida Panthers and the team except that he is no longer the Panthers head coach. This after meeting with NHL commissioner Gary bettman for several hours earlier this afternoon in New York first Michael, can you tell us about how that news was received within the Florida Panthers organization? Well, I think that they were completely blindsided. And I know that there was a lot of controversy that he was allowed to coach the game the night before that he resigned against the Boston Bruins. After last night game, quinzel did not speak to reporters instead referring to a statement by general manager Bill zito. You know, it's a horrible story. You know, I've long respected Joel kuen ville. I'm shocked that, you know, looking at the story, I think he comes off the worst out of anybody. Other than maybe John McDonough, the president of the team who's no longer there. If you look after a month month and a half after that this was all brought to the Blackhawk's attention, it was Joel grenville, who in these host season evaluations of this guy, a lot of him, knowing that these allegations were in the background and I just think it's, I don't know. Very disappointed in somebody that I had immense respect for. Well, the guy who has now taken over for grenville as interim head coach of the Panthers is former assistant coach Andrew brunette, a lot of hockey fans will know the name. But for anyone who doesn't know a ton about him, Michael, can you just give us the quick one O one on his background and what you learned about him while writing a story about him recently? Yeah, he's from Ontario. One of the slowest players in NHL history that just scored his head incredible hands and incredible smarts. And I'm not making fun of him when I say that he was slow. He's the most self deprecating human being ever when it comes to his skating ability. He scored the biggest goal in Minnesota wild history. Here's keen on it. The end of Patrick was career in 2003 in the first round in game 7. Inside of death for time and Minnesota is moving on. But if you look at it, it almost feels like the whole play is in slow motion. A little curl. Little toe drag and he buys himself time because wise sliding to the right and Andrew brunette is looking up to the sky. That is unbelievable. If you've ever met Andrew Burnett, if you know anybody that's ever met Andrew brunette, there's nobody that says a bad word about him. He's just loved. He's loved in that locker room. He's got the loudest laugh in the history of the world. Well, Bruno says I talk all the time. So I'm sure you've got to listen. He says he says I talk too much and I gotta listen more. Ray furrows his point blank, Andrew brunette is his favorite teammate. He's my favorite my favorite teammate. I just lumpy in around the hockey jokey is always always always been that way. His personality just lists you. When this is somebody that's played a ton of hockey game scored over 400 goals in the National Hockey League has had a million teammates and yet Andrew Burnett is his favorite teammate. I think players in that locker room are absolutely going to love them. And hopefully if they go on a long run, this could be the start of a long coaching career for Angela. You also wrote about something that Darby hendrickson of former NHL player told you about Andrew brunette. And it's a story that I think reveals just how much of a hockey nut brunette really is. Could you tell us that story?.
