"Go privacy, simplified. It's 7 35 It's morning edition from NPR News. I'm Rachel Martin and I'm Noel King. Good Morning. Ah federal judge has ruled that the National Rifle Association cannot pursue bankruptcy. The N R A tried to use the bankruptcy process as a way to dodge New York officials. Who want to shut it down for alleged fraud and for miss spending nonprofit funds. The court ruled that the Aymara had not filed bankruptcy in good faith. NPR's Tim Mack has covered the entire area for years. He's on this one ate him. Either. This sounds like trouble for the entire area. Is it I think it is. I mean, the National Rifle Association is facing the prospect of being shut down entirely. So last year New York in the New York Attorney General Sada Court's approval to shut down the nonprofit after an investigation found that the enemy had committed alleged financial misconduct in the tens of millions of dollars, often to the personal benefit of executives like its CEO, Wayne LaPierre, so to avoid that theory, tried to declare bankruptcy and move To Texas. The bankruptcy trial aired a lot of theories dirty laundry and put into the record evidence of exotic trips, private jets and wedding expenses paid for by the gun rights group. And the federal judge ultimately decided that bankruptcy wasn't an appropriate way for the in there and array to proceed forward. Here's what Attorney General Letitia James said following the bankruptcy judges decision. The rot runs deep. Which is why we will now return to New York courts and continue our case. No one is above the law. Not even one of the most powerful lobbying organizations in the country. So James said she anticipated a trial on that matter in 2022, where she'll be seeking penalties, restitution and even the dissolution of the entire area. Okay, And so, what is the N R a saying Well, the entire a put out a statement following the ruling, saying that the group had taken steps to improve internal financial controls, and they would continue to be a force in gun rights advocacy. Wayne LaPierre said that quote although we are disappointed in some aspects of the decision, there is don't change in the overall direction of our association, and he also added that quote theory will keep fighting as we've done for 150 years. This is a group with a lot of adversaries. As you know, what are they saying about this ruling? Well, gun control advocates who opposed the Honore looked upon. The ruling is good news and a sign that the entire eight won't be as effective in future. Here's every town for gun safety President John Feinblatt talking about the bankruptcy. The entire area has nothing to show for it, but more lawyers build More embarrassing news clips. More reasons for their members to jump ship and so is you've been digging into this. Do you get the sense that Wayne LaPierre is going to keep his job as head of the N R a Well, it's really interesting lap here has been the head of the enemy for nearly 30 years, and he remains really popular among many senior officials there, but he's lost some people like Judge Phillip Journey. Journey is a an Array board member who's become a dissident, he explained. During the bankruptcy trial, how the entire area is run. It essentially operated as a Kingdom rather than a corporation. That journey goes on to say there that it operated specifically as Wayne LaPierre is Kingdom. So the question is given the centrality of LaPierre to some of these scandals. Can the inner emerge from the troubles without jettison him at some point, And I guess another question would be how much does this weekend them in the near term? One thing that's become pretty clear in this process is very chaotic process is that it's not the genera as a group that is powerful. When it comes to the control debate. It's the millions of members they represent. So even while theory has been in chaos, the debate over gun reform in Congress hasn't really moved. Lot of lawmakers remain terrified of crossing the entire or its members and so gun control legislation passed in the house is now stalled in the Senate. As for a replacement for the generator, there's not really a clear successor if the enemy continues to struggle. Other gun rights groups in America are generally considered more hard line than the IRA and their organizations are just a fraction of the size. What is clear is that the Internet is likely to be embroiled in controversy for a great deal longer and you'll be covering it and we appreciate it. NPR's to Mac Thanks Tow. Thanks a lot. Family. The county attorneys have said that they are conducting an investigation, along with the state is investigating as well into What happened here as sheriffs were serving a search warrant on Andrew Brown Junior's home. They say that he attempted to either flee in his car. But they also say that there appears to have been some contact with Andrew Brown's car into some of the deputies before the shooting began. So I think there's a lot of that. We don't know about this shooting. But this is where you're getting the calls that today's funeral as well as the protests have been going on for Days now the call for transparency the call for the body cam footage to be released so that people can see what happened. What's the hold up on the police body cam footage, while the county attorneys say that it's because there is an ongoing investigation and so that they feel that releasing the video could jeopardize the investigation. I think you could say as well, though, that that is leading to a lot of concern about the transparency issue and and concern about whether or not we as the public and certainly the family members and the attorneys who will be handling any case of there's potentially that there's concern about that transparent station, whether they'll know the full scope. Of what happened here again. There's the concern that this man was shot in the back of the head, according to that independent autopsy. So what were the circumstances of that? How did that come to be where the officers justified? In opening fire on Andrew Brown Jr Now you know, there have been cases where people use their cars as a deadly weapon and try to hit people. And so if that's the case, perhaps county attorneys will say that this is justified. We just don't know any of this right now are very much about this right now because county prosecutors have Release so little information. But we do know that there were seven deputies involved in this incident. Four of them have been reinstated. They they were all put on administrative leave. Four have been reinstated because it was determined that they did not open fire. During this incident, there were three deputies of that seven who actually opened fire. Those remain on administrative leave as they continue to investigate. NBC's Mark Rommel are thank you, Mark. My pleasure. Have the latest on that all the details from San Antonio First news National correspondent Rory O'Neil coming up, it's 7 40. Now back to the NBA, a in particular the San Antonio Spurs and the Western Conference and how playoffs will take place this season. It's always eight teams from the West eight teams from the East and that's going to be the case this year, but there's going to be I guess for lack of a better phrase a many play in a tournament. Two games maximum. The top six teams are automatically in the playoffs. Today, those six teams would be Utah Phoenix Clippers Nuggets, Lakers Mavericks. Then come teams 789 10. Portland is currently seven. Memphis is eight. Spurs are nine Golden state is 10. If you don't want the Spurs in the playoffs. What's scary is that the Spurs sitting at number nine are just two games back of Dallas and the six position which is guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. For argument's sake will take it just the way it stands today. Portland is seven Memphis SIS ate San Antonio is nine and Golden State is 10. If this were the end of the regular season. Seven seed Portland would play eight seed Memphis. The winner. Automatically gives the seven feed. And the team that would say that that's Portland. Okay, and the team that seeded number eight and loses Memphis would just move off to the side for the time being. Then number nine San Antonio spurs and number 10 Golden State warriors would play each other loser done. The winner of that game now would plate Memphis. Who lost the Portland And the winner gets the eight seed. Which is you know if you're if you're Portland or Memphis, and you finished seven and eight You're pissed you absolutely You now have to play an additional game. Possibly, too. If he lose that first one of your Memphis in or Portland, possibly two. Get in to a position that you were already in. In the past. You're already in the top eight. Yeah, I'd be pissed too, having to play an extra game. Uh, again. I'm for the San Antonio Spurs, playing as well as they can play without winning. Cause I want to get into the lottery.
