"Again. If the gradings are great or the ratings are terrible. The deals are done. Like who cares. I mean maybe it's a story for nfl media that covers media but who cares who cares about ratings ratings to mir about okay. Are they going to get a new. Tv deal with increase will. They've already shown that that's easy. Those are my ten predictions for the nfl season. I want to enjoy it and before. Leave you just a quick remembrance today. September ninth two days from september eleventh. My remembrance of september eleventh twenty years ago is this. I've told this story before. I'm driving into work. Here's something you know at that time. Had no one knew what was going on sound like a prop plane collided into the one world trade center towers and of course we soon found. That was more than that. I remember coming into the packers off. Dave's tuesday so players weren't around. But i saw director of security jerry parents who was of looking around and crime because he solves going on. And then you didn't know what was going on and you had the reports and then something had a plane falls out of the sky in pennsylvania on my god. I mean all this stuff was going on. We didn't know what to do now. I gotta worry about the nuts and bolts of the franchise because we are scheduled to go new york second week of the season. Two thousand one scheduled to go to new york play the giants and it soon became clear that new york city the giants stadium. Meadowlands was being used as a more on my god. So we're not doing that so now. Communication with the nfl's very hard hard to get through there in new york worried about people. I found out one of my friends and manage counselors wife was in the towers eventually. Lost that woman. Paul tagliabue's trying to reach gene upshaw. Gene upshaw lost someone close to him in that building so anyway this is all going on and we don't know what to do so i hear from one person the nfl set. Okay get ready to host the giants on monday night television and i'm like okay that would mean two consecutive monday night games atlanta boat. They said yeah. Because the following we were hosting washington redskins as the recalled. And i'm like sure they yet so we're mobilizing to get ready to host the giants.

"The nfl players didn't get back enough. Something that was not negotiable from player side became non-negotiable from the owner. Sunday needed extra games. They got it. They got a seventeen game. I don't think the players got enough back in return if anything. They got some minimum salaries that gets better benefits. But jeez we here's the point. We are never ever ever ever going back to sixteen games people. It's over. We're never going back. And what i want to say is that that's huge so whatever. The injury rate was for sixteen games. Let's pick a number twenty eight percent of players got hurt and for out for more than one game probably more than that now. That will go to thirty five percent or whatever they'll go to the one seventeen increase so this is where we are. We're never going back. Maybe in ten years the next year we'll beat. Eighteen games made him before that. But you see the pattern. The nfl players gave away this precious inventory of another game. And yeah there's gonna be attrition and when we get to the playoffs so yeah. They don't have their receiver. They don't have their best pass rusher. They don't have their best cover corner. Yeah now would. They have had them if it was sixteen games. Maybe maybe not so the seventeen games and then the last prediction is the obvious prediction. The nfl is still continues to be the undisputed king of us sports. There's not even close. Preseason games out rate playoff games in other sports preseason games which are universally mocked out rate playoff games in other sports. You know it's just. There's not even a comparison to other sports. Here's where the nfl is. They're on their second the beginning of their second. Tenure collect a barn agreement with the players labor peace. It's there this is why again. I criticize that deal. Ten years s. eighteen months ago that the players made because the honored needed to things to go to the networks. they needed to thank. They needed labor peace and they needed the seventeenth again. Then they go to the networks and get. Here's the number. A hundred and ten billion dollars.

"Baylor can do it at carolina with billionaire owner one of the richest men in the world. I believe in that role in panthers. I like their chances. And can't i'm not saying super bowl. I'm saying lock people seem lassen division or whatever. They're six six win seven wins. I like this team. A like the panthers another team that is gonna turn around their fortunes. This may not be a stretch to say this. That's the chargers. This is the most hard-luck team in the nfl. Poor team was playing in a band box of the soccer stadium. The poor team Didn't wanna do any public funding to keep them. They couldn't go to l. a. As a major tenant that are i mean owner there tended to sankranti in the rams. They all these things and of course they lose all the close games up until now. They're starting quarterback at this time last year how does lung punctured with an injection. I just see fortunes turning electric coach daily. I like the quarterback as everyone does. I like their talent. I think the charges will ascend this year in another team. I think will be better than anyone thinks. Is the team in stadium speaking to you now philadelphia. I don't understand why people think that using be so bad. What made him so bad. Last year quarterback play of that quarterback is now gone costing the team thirty four million can't money but carson wentz is now a colt and it'll be better than colts adapt. I definitely think he will be. But they've extricated that issue that like hurts hurts unto me at running back with good arm but he can run and play quarterback and now we have it Ordinary speed in excitement at the wide receiver position youth and they have their lines. One of the best hunter lines one best defensive lines so i like the eagles I don't know about the cowboys. But i like the eagles to challenge for the division people. Think it's gonna be between washington dallas. I said eagles look out for them. So those are three teams. I think it'd be better than anyone thinks. Another thing that i wanna talk about as a prediction for the year ahead is my old friend. Talked about all season aaron rodgers. Everyone talks about rogers. In the vein. That oh my god who was so upset he was never gonna come back. I knew it come back. And i still maintain a what i maintain for two years. He will play as an mvp and he'll be a placeholder. Okay they are moving onto love. Ammos what if he wins the super like they're moving on onto love. Aaron rodgers will be traded in february. Okay he will be traded. And he's not thrilled about being there but he's a pro so he will co exist with that front office in compartmentalize and it'll be a great team and it'll be a great player it happens you can do these lands. Aaron can do this. The packers can do this. I think he'll be mvp again. I predict the packers a win the super bowl. I predict the packers. Beat the bucks in whatever playoff round of course unbiased. I can't be not by it. Was there ten years. I'm not going to get rid of my bias. But i really believe that. Aaron rodgers going to have another mvp season. That's the prediction there. Another prediction a last couple of The last couple of bob league business. I don't think people appreciate what has happened with schedule. Weight a sixteen games scheduled for forty years a year ago at this time sorry. Eighteen months ago the nfl players association gave away. What i think is huge huge asset to the owners that i continue to say as said for eighteen months..

"We'll hopefully situation being more clear and less cloudy. He's not gonna play now. Is he going to actually stay there. I don't know he's not gonna go on the first trip. I don't think to jacksonville. i think week by week. They're just going to say we're not playing them while the nfl decides what to do while the texans decide what to do is on the defacto commissioner examples. Because they're not playing. They don't want him he doesn't want to you. Don't want to be there. That's been known since january. Emily signed a big contract a year ago. So here we are. Welcome to the show to shawn. Watson is not part of it it'll be in the background somewhere now. People say well what he just says. I wanna play. Well maybe that could force an issue. But he's not going to say that he's not gonna say that because he wants out and then no team's going to trade form i mean. Can you imagine an owner going fan base too. Hey look we had a great deal. We've to shawn watson. Hey female fan base look. We got komo not going to happen to shawn. Watson will play this year as much as you are. I will play another thought. For the year. I think most unvaccinated players will eventually get back stated not all. I think that's too strong to say. All but i think you have to realize what we're talking about to each his own personal choice the nfl's man ending back stations. They are making it extremely tough on the unvaccinated. But here's my thought if it was just tennis if this was golf. Fine but this is football. The ultimate the ultimate interdependent codependent team sport so if kirk cousins carson wentz or josh sweat or cam newton before got cut didn't want to get vaccinated from one point of view shore. Of course our choice. It's their body all those things. They have their reasons. But then you're talking about team. There are teen consequences here if they get an if they cause an outbreak that which which took the result in a forfeit. Your team doesn't get paid. The other team doesn't get paid. Imagine that division if they have to test it every day and have to be apart from the team. That's not good if kirk cousins carson. Wentz can't sit in corporate quarterback meetings. That's not good so these are all things i think. Mostly these guys will get back. Stated we saw with the kid Excuse me buffalo is on. Mackenzie will see more of it. Maybe lamar jackson has he doesn't want to keep it. He wants to keep it private. You know these things are gonna happen. My sense is a lot of the unvaccinated. I don't know how big population that is. It vaccinate okay Other predictions i have. Here's three about teams in the nfl. That i think are going to be better than people think. Say so my three teams. That are gonna be better than people think. Number one the panthers. There's nobody about their. You know their division with tom brady in a division with new quarterback damon winston in a division. With with the falcons. I think they're good. They lost a lot of close games yet last year. And i believe in matt rule out to me. Coaching really matters not just the head coach withhold program and he is a big about program. Here's a college coach. You look at track record. He goes to temple not philadelphia. I know what that's like. Turns that program around go to baylor. Scandal rocked earns up program around. If he can do it at temple..

"Hey that's the structure for ben rothlisberger. Right that's the structure for every player. We've had in here. That's the structure for pick a name. Whoever all pro player they've had levin bell years ago antonio brown years ago Anyone and what's to walk in and say you know and now with these holdout rules that no. He's been holding in what he can. Do you know holden's last for a while but now the season starts. So what are you gonna do. So the steelers. I think still have leverage there. Those are the things that are being wrapped up at the end. And of course we saw since squeezing of running backs The tavis murray with the saints. Were they give an ultimate him pay cutter go. He said no. I'm out they go with the younger cheaper option. This guy sweated out entire offseason in training camp and then they come with that. It's a cold business colder than that and listen a what a cold business for running backs. I thought it was really poignant Note this week in the transaction page that the ravens who've lost some running backs brought in levian bell devante freeman for workouts. Think about that. I think it was three or four short years ago. These were the two highest paid players in the league. Bell on the franchise sagging freeman on highest paid actual contract league like seven and a half a year. Now they're begging for tryouts for minimum and not even getting minimum. They didn't sign premium. They signed bell to the practice squad where remakes eight thousand week or something like this guy. Making fourteen million three years ago that he turned down with the tag but anyway the what's going on here hate to be running back. They need their own union. They are the most disadvantaged group in the nfl for two reasons. One teams think can get younger cheaper all the time and to the shortest shelf life of any position once you get past the age where some positions are just blossoming like offensive line quarterback as a running back here on way down or out of league. There are outliers. Curtis martin emmett smith frank core of course but there are laws doesn't happen so we'll see players like elliot and mccaffrey in barclay in how long they last aaron jones. But.

"Snap we don't tell me about preseason so here we are more than seven months later the. Nfl has the longest the longest off season of any major sports league. I know that. Because i worked in it so from my perspective as someone who was an agent for many years who ran a team at least their finance and business for ten years and now has been analyzing the business of the nfl. For over ten years. It's clear to me that. My role is always counterintuitive when the kickoff happens tonight at nine o'clock rate thirty eastern tampa bay kicks off to dallas or vice versa. I will as i do every year for the past twenty five thirty years take a deep breath take a sigh of relief because my time my times over like my work is done and that was especially true. Were conferred team. Now i know you gotta go to the games bottom of the roster decisions every week any you. Some extensions late in the year but the fact is for front office. The work is done as an agent. The work is done as a business. Football analysts a lot of the work is done now. I'm gonna continue to be here to be on my columns and podcasts and commenting and twitter and everything and i'll be busy but the work part the contracts the free agency. that's when teams are assembled. In the off season there assemble their architecture manage their built. It's all there and that's the business football so now it's the game so every year. I was look at this time. Like okay with front office takes desire relief. They're done they're done. They are turning the team over to the coaches and now it's the coach's responsibility so the coaches players go into what i call the submarine for five months and they'll come out in january for teams. That are lucky. Late january early february. And that's it. And then they go back into their more freestyle life and then the front office takes over in the submarine for six months. So this is the way football in the. Nfl works yes. There's things to do the next few months for business side in the nfl. But it's largely done in front office at this time. I know there's things going on. T. j. watt with the steelers at this moment but it's done like scouts are on the road checking out prospects for twenty twenty two cap managers..

"We gotta talk about the other team in that division where. I currently reside parking rents. We don't know as of today. Tobagan were monday water. You start. I have been pointing out as you know on twitter in many other places about the massive commitment to wentz where i know. We can talk about sunk costs. I knew we talk about you. Gotta do what's right for the team. I just think different. They can't give up on this guy. Yeah i don't think they. I don't think they can give up on them but they also they can't. They can't potential. Winning division sees a winning season but they can't throw away a potential season right. I mean just get in like we've we've seen seventy-nine seattle. I mean seven nine seven nine. Seattle beat new orleans the defending super bowl champs the panthers seven eight and one won a playoff game against the cardinals viewers will granted carson palmer got injured or stanton play totally different dynamic. But you have a chance. And they have to find a way over these last few weeks of the season to do whatever is necessary to salvage the season whence is a much. There's there's the macro and the micro the macro is rehabilitating carson wentz for the long term because you are committed like the money tells you you are committed. They're that's bats not changing but the micro is what do we do to get out of this funk right now because honestly if they get together a couple of wins their tie might be the single greatest thing that ever happened to them. Because it's it's a half win as opposed to a loss and that could be the one thing that changes everything for them if they can just find a little more functionality peterson last week. Said i'm not gonna go to Hurts because i don't want to send that message to the team now where he may not go to win this week because they don't want send that message to the team. Just what you're talking about now look to hurts was given in like there's a there's a season to be salvaged. Okay and much in the same way. David carr not dairy. David carr never recovered from his rookie year. When he was sacked seventy seven times. Whatever carson's problems have been are exacerbated by the fact that he's gone ten straight game can expect at least three times. I think it's well over fifty on the year already..

"Espn news a twenty four hour news channel for sports and then i started but they started the putting on baseball tonight a little bit and from then i got. I was the host of the six o'clock sportscenter for two and a half years. Then they they moved me off that and put me on the nba tonight for one season. And i said look like. I don't wanna do. This is not my thing. I mean i like the nba. But it's not something that i wanna be all time consuming line and then that was in two thousand two to the winner of two thousand and three and in august two thousand and three they launched. Nfl live and a. I was on that show from two thousand three till february of twenty eighteen. Although i started the radio show with mike technically in end of november twenty. Seventeen after nfl. It's always much coverage for ali. When i was a kid andrew. Like i would like drop plays like literally. I've watch game. Like i my family's from texas so i was. I was grandson new york but my whole family's from texas and we moved back to the states in the early seventies. My dad had been covering the vietnam war for life magazine and we were living hong kong but we came back and won first football games i ever saw. Tv was monday night game with the cowboys and my father was like dallas cowboys. We're from texas cool and the helmet. The star was pretty cool and they were winning so it made it very easy for me to be a cowboys fan. But like i literally like draw plates come up with plays and try and figure things out and you'll college football as you well know in the northeast is not really a huge thing. So you know i. "So Andrew I'm caught between. You know the the the objective opportunity of having a billboard in front of seven billion people and doing a call to action for watching the peel. And then how moving. And then how Tim's guests often answer it philosophically. So I think something obviously something that I'm working on is asking more questions and understanding. Why and I think So from philosophical standpoint. I would say that. Perhaps like. I think tells into a a word that has been also romanticized over the last several years I think misunderstood with its brother sister were, which is sympathy is empathy. So empathy for me seek to understand rather than seek to be understood, and we're constantly and searched for for for people to understand our point of view because it's important and we're trying to communicate why we feel a certain way I think the source of a lot of conflict relationship and and in business is to people coming from a genuine place of trying to get the other to understand the perspective that it gets in the way of empathy So that would be the way that I defined empathy and see it versus sympathy is like literally offering support for the person in pain. And then on. The commercial side like checkup the PO l. at Po. L. And our twitter's at Ramiro across in our games. Aren't NBC's summer. Yeah Rep it's up because I was going to ask. All your social media. When Paul this has been great. Always enjoyed talking to you admire your entrepreneurial spirit. You're kind of more than an athlete way of doing business since way back since I met through octagon five years ago. And Happy People L. Day and we'll say that's all our listeners as well. Right thank you. Yeah. Happy L. Day and if you haven't watched the P L L like I guess before we we really invite you do that. I, think. Part of why we are growing year over year is that were also broadcasting the game differently. So it wasn't just say find a network that can. Distribute the product on field mean we have ten to fifteen cameras on site. which competes with a lot of NFL games to be honest and and Lacrosse I think lot like hockey in the nineties can be difficult to watch if you don't know the game. So we made sure we lowered our game Cam that we have these slasher cams we have point of view cams we have all our players miked up and were really showing a fun broadcast So I encourage, you ought to watch it, and then maybe this time next year you'll you'll know if you didn't want appeal all day center but actually haven't been. Really enjoy that what an entrepreneur wouldn't athlete more than across player more than any kind of athlete. He's an entrepreneur along with being at talent. "Boys and girls welcome to another edition of the business of sports with Andrew Brandt. We were talking interested a really wanted to have this gas for this week. And what's going on in the NFL and specifically The Situation off with Tyrod Taylor and the Chargers no better guess than my friend. Dr. David shall David is the former Dock of the aforementioned Chargers then San Diego where he still is dead and now of course and involved with a lot of other sports organizations Scott profootballtalk.com pro football on Twitter kind of a go-to guy for injuries. So we're going to talk globally about injuries, but we'll start with tie rod, but first David, welcome to the podcast. I am always interested in medical things never get to it as a full issue on the podcast. But here we are. Well, that's probably good that you don't get to it as a full issue. Right? I mean you kind of don't want to hear about medical and then when you do it's usually bad news, so it's not it's not a fun topic, but I'm honored to wage. But you asked me to come on in a big fan of yours and as you know kind of in some ways followed in your Footsteps in a weird way, right? I mean, obviously I fed into this through National Football post's an outfit that you started right and and and essentially it's the it's the X right the X front office guy took the ex-doctor. So I've often described what I do is the medical Mike Pereira, but it might be the front office Andrew Brandt might be the the medical Andrew Brandt, you know, whatever wage it's it's an interesting history that people don't know even knowing me from ESPN or Russ Tucker or Sports Illustrated or TV started my media when I left the Packers wage what you just mentioned National Football Post put together by some insiders that we just said no one's doing this. No one's sort of bringing us behind-the-scenes just standard media and that grave Had your your local mate Jack bechta agent out in La Jolla Mike Lombardi Matt Bowen, Joe fortenbaugh and myself and we've all moved and maybe not bigger but better things not better but you know, it was quite a time and you jogged my memory. You were part of that way back in the day. It's I was quite a way to transition from inside to to outside. Well, I got agent okeydoke done that so I finished up with the Chargers in Jack County me do something right something and I was like, I'm not a media guy and I said I said, I'll tell you what, why don't your guys ask me some questions and I'll just answer them..

"Back to the ranch. Let's talk about the Sean Jackson. We have a situation as they say. He? INSTAGRAM's out I. Guess Posts and by the way I just started instagram. You want to check me out Andrew Brandt to still trying to get Andrew Brandt. I know I'm getting a losing monogamy with twitter I know but people tell me I gotta get on Instagram. Speaking instagram to Sean Jackson puts it out. It is a quote about Hitler about from Farrakhan. It's obviously NFL towards Jews. It's something that you read, and you say Oh my God. He's basically calling out Jewish people in a very dramatic way and. You know first of all. Desha Jackson is not twenty four years almost thirty four years always thirty three years old. There's not a lot of excuses for that He knows who Hitler is. He knows that Farrakhan has been an anti Semite. This is something that just doesn't seem where he can sort of. Apologize it away and say now we're GonNa Learn Your GonNa. Learn that's great. But this is This is more than. I think other people saying things that they are totally ignorant about. You know, it's hard to be ignorant about the word Hitler I, just think. It's Horn what he did. It's vile and. Now, we get to the eagles. What are they gonNA do well. You know usually this time of year. Offices are getting those calls from unrecognizable numbers like what the player do now. We're getting ready for camp. This is different. You've got our Jewish general manager in Howie Roseman. You've got Jewish owner. Jeffrey Lurie. we've got a problem, so he is as of this moment still on the team I think that bodes well for many. He hasn't been cut yet. They can go all the way from termination to doing nothing I. think it'll be somewhere in between. I know a lot of people. Are GonNa? Call for termination. And I understand it. For the Eagles, they've got a precedent and for them. It's a bad one. Under chip Kelly, they'd rather cooper. They had no other receivers. Jerem macklin got hurt. Riley Cooper said the N. word. It was caught on tape what they do. They sent him home. A couple of days got training. They needed a receiver. Let's be real name and they took him back. And yes, there was something about Michael Vick taken up for him but John. Jackson was on that team, and obviously it affected him. Now is a problem. And now the problem is coming to bite them because I'm sure to sound. Jackson is raising that or is agent..

"Yeah. And that's the that is the question. I think that. I think that. The difference to me at least. Is You've got a couple of things that have happened immediately one think. Responding to force with more force, created even more gasoline, so I think that the White House response is actually making this an even bigger. When you deploy corrections, officers in prison guards onto American streets. You're not going to get the response you want from people who are used to being free. I said this over and over again. You can do whatever you want to black people. You know you can go into black neighborhoods, and you can rough him up, and you can shoot him, and you can do whatever you WanNa do to us. But when you start pulling that with these young white kids who are out in the streets, who are protesting and you run after them, and you start hitting them and doing the things that we've seen happen across the country. You'RE GONNA. Get a totally different reaction because they believe in freedom and they believe that hey, wait a minute I belong to this culture. You can't do that to me. And they also have resources and a lot of ways. They have recourse. And so because you're starting to see that. And it's so vivid and also everybody's been in the house, and also a lot of people have lost their jobs during this pandemic, so there's a lot of anxiety here. Combining all that together. Now suddenly, you're starting to see actual legislation that is discussing real police reform in real police reconsideration. I don't think there's going I. Don't think we're going back to this I i. don't think that there's going to be a level of complacency here. If there is going to be some complacency at all, it's GonNa at the very least create a new baseline. I don't think people are gonNA. Go. Oh, yeah, the that moment lasted for a few weeks, and then everybody went back to normal i. don't see it going back because I think one also being in an election year. All of this is going to have implications moving toward November so. I feel like the country's coming apart and I. think that when you when you hit these types of moments, you don't just sort of reset. You're in the middle of pandemic. You've got police going. You know being supported on one side, but also being attacked on the other you know, and a long overdue attacking of them, because their culture has been so unaccountable, they deserve to be attacked by by by legislators to say look you. Guys are out of control. And so I just don't I have a hard time believing I. Don't think it's GonNa. Be some sort of revolution because I think always going to be a retrenchment at some point but I. I just don't see everybody going back to normal after this. Definitely, true that we're learning and the one thing I've learned so much that I never knew for weeks ago was. The immunity that police have and they're protections against what they do I mean..

"For you. Give it to me straight all those years in Green Bay teams coming to play there in the dead of winter as cold as it. Was you take a little bit and by you? I mean all the packer executives not necessarily you specifically a little bit of joy was a little bit of giggling maybe a little bit of shade thrown at the executive of other teams who came in inappropriately dressed for the cold that would have been me absolutely staggered by the cold. That would've been me thinking. They might end up like the Donner Party. That would have been me. She guys make a little fun of us. Take a little joy in this little gleeful. I was and I'm thinking back to seeing you in the buffet. Line at Lambeau in one of those December Games and you had this. Look Amy and you didn't say it but you have this look. That really was sort of asking me in your your visual was how the hell do you live. Here was just one of those looks. You had like you were saying with your. Is Andrew how you live here. I you know what I the only thing that surprises me about that is that I didn't yell it out across the room at you. There were gangs. I remember going to Lambeau My husband actually join me. On one of our road trips we were doing a tremendous amount of entertaining of sponsors and business partners and of or limited partners and at one point I needed to get down to someone in the stands from upstairs. Where we were some sideline passes post-game passes and of course looked at my husband and kind of hand to him so he goes marching down from the top top level where the visiting team staff sat up in the box. All the way down to almost the front row of the stadium and he's wearing loafers and it's December and it had just snowed and it was good natured. It was in good fun. Nobody was being mean or horrible but the teasing he took from your fans about walking down in December through the stands with you know no coat wearing loafers. I think we will solder the Californians were fodder for a lot of fun in Green Bay. I had the moments to in Alameda as a shared. That your black hole We were out there on the opposite side of the weather spectrum and it was it was so high. Preseason is August a wonderful memory to end this discussion with is when you came to play in Oakland the packers came to Oakland And the game was either the day or one or two days after Brett. Farve had lost his dad and he played and played phenomenally. Well and you guys killed us and what you just exploded. My heart was our fans in the black hole and otherwise throughout the stadium cheering for Brett because even though you guys were killing us. They respected and appreciated what he was doing with the heartache. He was experiencing and he was completing. Pass after. Pass after pass and when I And listen to our fans cheering for Brett I cried it was. It was magnificent sportsmanship chills right now. It was that Sunday afternoon and a Monday night game Sunday afternoon. Lazing around the Piedmont Hotel beautiful place in Berkeley call from bus. Cook Brett's agent worst Brat. Bread is where he. We gotta find him like urgency urgency in his voice. And I said I don't know what's up. Herb died her father. I said IRV die yet. Herb dive where's he where's he where's he read knowing could ever find bride. I don't know if he had a fall. So we put out the and it turns out he was on a golf course with his buddies Ryan Longwell and up another cow guy and Doug Peterson and We got in touch with dog and put dog on the phone with the Anna and Anna told him and he came back and he said I want to speak to the team. We didn't know what he was going to say and he said to the team. I just want you guys to know I'm GonNa play and that's what my dad would want me to do. My Dad's a coach and my dad. Really want me to play their amy. There was not a dry in that room on that Sunday. Night at the Piedmont and then Monday night is what you described balls. Were coming from heaven and dropping into the hands of Donald driver Japan Walker Wesley Walls and others and was an amazing amazing time. That was Monday night Wednesday back in Green Bay. We board a plane to Hattiesburg Mississippi. We Bury His father and I saw side abroad far. I never seen before nor sense. He wasn't superstar quarterback. He was a brother of friend. A father son a friend a community of just a guy in the community patties purpose. Sippy it was. He was justify paying respects to earth. Farben like you bring back memories. Bring that up because that whole week is just so vivid. Some weeks in your life you. You couldn't remember minute of and that week I remember every bit of it well and I will say only this to the point you made about some of those passes appearing as if they were from heaven There was something magical about threats performance at night and there was something magical about your whole team's performance that night and what. I felt so proud of and so good about our fans reaction to that because as you know. Raider fans are often pointed at Talked about and and there's an image a reputation which I knew and I was unfair. These are tremendous tremendous people and to see them respond to Brett's and give Brett a standing ovation when he scored touchdowns against us was those are the Raider fans. I knew and to see them doing that for. Bret really was natural. What's been nice in this this role that you and I have over the recent years and I say this for both of us and I know you can add to it. It's just that we have been a voice I feel for these fan bases And I know I have so many packer fans that follow me and I see so many Raider fans that follow you and hopefully we can be kind of a voice of reason that whatever you think of packer fans whatever you think. Raider fans there's a real goodness to a for my side. I've never seen fans like these pam before nor sense that wrap themselves around sports team and really. I know the cliche about they own the team in the community ownership. But it's real and they took such an inch. I always felt working for the packers that I was working for public trust. You Know I. I had the magnitude of doing that. And when I knew issued a contract when I made a big decision had the weight of these thousands and millions of shareholders and people with certificates on their wall and I didn't take that lightly. I really didn't and I know you feel the same way about the blackhawks. I do beautifully stated and while our team wasn't publicly owned as was the one which you were I always said throughout my years in the league over and over and over again fans are to be cherished without fans there is no NFL as we know it and the fans are what make things work. So I couldn't stated anymore beautifully than you just did so I won't add to that. Thanks I mean I will leave you with this. We talked about this last time. You're on the podcast you are. You have done something I cannot bring myself to do and I'm trying not to beat myself up during this twelve weeks. We've had stuck at home. Which is that. Hey Andrew everybody says it and why don't you do it now? Why don't you write that Book Amy? Trask wrote the book. And I. You know I'll answer my own question because I just I do my columns. I read for school. I just think that I need you to sort of therapy. Therapies me this through this because I don't see a book is too big this project like. I'm just good with my columns. I'm good with these fifteen hundred word things to think about an thousand eight hundred thousand word book. It's siren come full circle on the beginning of our discussion and I will say to you that huge shared with us on this podcast that you say to your son. Follow your dreams. Follow your passion when it's right if it's right you'll know it don't force it becomes something about what you're passionate if it becomes a dream. I have every confidence you will sit down. And you'll do it you'll do it magnificently. And unless and until it does don't beat yourself up about it thanks doc. Thank you Andrew for the privilege and the pleasure of participating in this discussion with you. It's really and truly has been one of my favorite things I've this is so great and again to tell everyone. Amy jumped at the chance to do this. I think she's sitting in a car somewhere. "Andrew. Brandt hope you enjoyed the two weeks previous with David? Faulk talking about Michael Jordan. The last dance is over. At least for US live watching now moves to net flicks the ten part Docu series about Michael Jordan. Last and a team is over so really hoping joy. David faulk parts one into the rolling interview so much insight that he has into Michael Jordan and the representation business basketball in itself. We move on to some different in minute. We're presented as always bet online your online sportsbook experts of course always the exclusive partner. Podcast one sports that use that Promo Code podcast one that online interesting guests for you today because the obsession in the early part of the quarantine. This spring has been netflixing tiger king. I think something like a hundred million people downloaded it watched at least one episode and while. We're all quarantined. And it's cute and seeing the Tigers and seeing the baby cubs and seeing that I guess likable at least empathetic character of tiger of Joe Exotic in Jomaa Nado Passage there's more to it and I saw an article about an animal rights lawyer name Kearney. Nassar she's currently teaching at Michigan State University School of law. She is a foremost expert. One of four people teaching this subject as Professor in the world she has all the information on Joe Exotic in fact brought the case against him and she knows the truth behind him and the truth would more in a positive light about Carol Baskin and Tiger Sanctuary. But it's a deep dive into these roadside zoos and the the puppy mills for Tiger says she calls them. I saw the interview with her out. There and I said this is someone that can really bring light to what we've heard about and read about in seen during this quarantine period which is the the Joe Exotic which is the Tiger King. So this is a real insight pulling back the curtain on what really happens with the world behind the tiger king. Thought she's a fascinating interview without further. Ado Animal Rights Lawyer Carney. Ns Sir so welcome to the podcast. Karn Nassar great to have you if you so much for having me Excited to be here and get into how this all actually relates to fort. Well it's been quite an quarantine as everybody knows. I know everyone's feeling like they WANNA get out. It's been enough. Hopefully we've turned a corner on this but early in the national state. Hormonal order seemed like everyone was gravitating to the net flicks. I guess call it. A docu series called the tiger king. And as I said it's this mullet wearing roads I'd zookeeper known as Joe Exotic and everyone got into it and it was kind of entertaining way to pass the time and to sort of debated in social media. But you sort of look deeper into it and then you get into issues which are so much on your radar about this person specifically will talk about and then wildlife tracking in general. So you're now an animal a professor at Michigan State. But you were familiar with this Joe Exotic way before this net flicks teen minutes of fame. He's had tell us about that. Yeah I mean I'm more than familiar. I'm the attorney who pitched the wildlife trafficking case against him to the Department of Justice Antonin Service. So the you know heart. At his conviction. Several years of his conviction is the result of an investigation. That was going on for years before the murder for hire Ever even happened so this was all the prosecution against Joe was in the work ever since I know that a red flag in one of the transfers of big cat from failing facility up in northern Merisi Anna to his side view in Oklahoma and I took the evidence to federal prosecutors in Lafayette Louisiana automatically family was sufficient reason to open investigation but felt like the case would be better situated up in Oklahoma which had been my along And so they made a clatter request to federal prosecutors in Oklahoma City and they started their investigation and her we are now and so is going to be spending the next twenty two years in federal prison so when you mentioned these inconsistencies in the paperwork about about this shuttered facility now northern Louisiana. What exactly what he was doing. Was it what we saw on the series and the way he treated. These cats took away their young. Well honestly what? We showed what he actually did pay in. All I can try to set that content on social media it would get fan because Tiflis Houston the animals that was going on with sober task. the US Department of Agriculture had four open investigations into this is an agency that gets repeatedly criticized by its own internal auditors. For failing to do its job but the situation at Joseph was so bad that they had not one not two not three but four open investigations for his. Chronic failure can meet the bare minimum standards of care for animals And there were twenty three tighter who died in rapid succession in his care. And that's just a little bit of of the problem. I mean as as the prosecutors through throughout the case He was killing tiger in violation of federal endangered species. Act in order to make space for more And instead of seeking she's got permits to purchase and sell tigers which he never would have met the criteria to obtain from us fish and Wildlife Service. You have to show like the the data. He's activists point has banned the commercial trade in Tigers. Nobody can import them. Every single title here in the United States is captive fresh But you're supposed to seek a permit if he wants to do anything that's otherwise so hinted under the endangered species act but it has to relate back to some sort of benefit to the species at large the way people like Joe got around that and this is what federal prosecutors also proved is that they falsified paperwork and they say they're making donations of cats or that they'd have only being spent somewhere temporarily for exhibition when in reality what they're doing is purchasing and selling in cash and then falsifying the paperwork so that would be other that as crimes for which she was convicted and that's the type of that's what I had noticed in the transfer of cat from The facility in Louisiana had come down You know we all we all know that that. Lsu Has the Tiger Tiger Mascot here in Baton Rouge there are also for a long time was a tiger in a gas station in Louisiana. May Tony and ponies. Owner has been found in violation of State Law. The permit he had to keep bat was Validated and we were ready when I was working at the animal. Legal Defense and taste Tony's who a huge sanctuary in Colorado beautiful accredited sanctuary on seven hundred acres And it's sort of true Louisiana political fashioned rather than comply with a court order by the law. Tony's owner when his State legislator and ask him to introduce something that would get him a retroactive exemptions in the law and in that legislative process he brought Joe Exotic Down Louisiana to be his expert witness as to why it's awesome to have tigers indexation And that was Joe's introduction to the folks in northern Louisiana who were also at the hearing And they were. They were failing they were having a lot of problems. Complying with The Federal Animal Welfare Act. They were shooting lions instead of providing them with veterinary care if it's too expensive And then Joe came into a bunch of cats Back into Oklahoma so that was really sort of how this all kicked off in that transfer wasn't particularly unique. I mean this is as the judge said if offensive hearing that I attended for Joe in January. If you're you know Joe who's involved in systematic traffic of endangered species like he was the epicenter of a lot of tiger talking in the United States that reaches its tentacles into virtually every state in the country so You know this was. He was charged and convicted for just a very very small fraction his federal crime. I saw a note from your interview with that you give to the NBA Journal. That really sort of struck me. You said and I quote you. Roadside zoos operate like puppymills for big cats female. Cats are used to breed and spend their lives confined a tiny cages their offspring or removed immediately upon birth shortly thereafter. So the process can begin. Gam- it did make me recall. A scene in the tiger king were female cat gave birth and within seconds they were using some tool to pry away that baby under the Under the fence and then it just really made me think so. This is this is happening and you say these roadside zoos. I mean are there a lot of them beyond Joe? Exotic are is this. Is this a business out there that people were trying to prevent from operating? Yeah any facility that allows you take a photo or bottle feed or have cut. You know cuddled time with tiger. There's some facilities that even offer swim with tigers even was depicted in anti Cain Any of these societies are involved in that premature maternal separation where babies are forcibly Yankee away from their mothers and then steals hydros impregnated. The whole cycle continues to repeat itself And they're involved in supporting the exotic pet trade when these cats get too big too expensive to be used for petting. Then we see you know jokes shooting them The or they dumped in the pet trade term for people who are looking for exotic pets. You know Shaquille O'Neal insiders and There are a lot of people who think that it's really cool. But you can't get a tiger from a reputable Sicily know as aza accredited zoo. No accredited sanctuary is going to supply tigers as pets but a tighter cost ten thousand dollars a year just to feed and under the federal animal. Welfare Act a tighter can only be used for cub heading which you know. Each of these cubs petty sessions can generate sixty few over. You know a thousand dollars just for one session and records have shown that these facilities use these policies should be in quiet. Dark areas with their mothers They have you know in their immune system having develops Used up to sixty times a day so you know she just an extremely lucrative for these roadside zoos but once they hit that about twelve week mark then it becomes a violation of federal welfare to offer public. Contact too dangerous for public And so when they just become a financial drain. So you'll see that a lot of the tiger she become very readily available in the pet trade. Are you know four months old six months old a They're they're no longer useful. You can get a tighter penned. Who's about you know six months old for less than a Lotta people pay for their dog album hundred bucks even free Enzi don't have meaningful laws in place in the United States. Track where these tests are going It's a very of the existing loss fraught with a lot of loopholes and the the US fish and Wildlife Service has not overseen the transfers of these tasks As it should be and so now we have this sort of black hole than a lot of these. Tighter has fallen into They've been they've been bred. Rapidly like said puppymills style For competiting for the this this business I mean one. Tighter cubs can potentially heels after a million dollars in revenue for us. I do so you know. They are huge moneymakers but then they get into expensive and I send them somewhere And that's when they fall into by call and who is responsible for enforcing these use sucked about you. Talk a lot about the animal welfare. Act IS IT at a state levels at a federal level. Are they doing enough? It seems like it's pretty lax and this is where I know you get involved but who is trying to deal with this puppy mill style. A breeding tigers. Who's out there? Trying to enforce this patchwork of laws there. Two primary federal laws that pertain to the The use of tigers in slices and cub petting the first one is federal animal welfare. Act THAT I mentioned it's enforced by the US Department of Agriculture. Or you know ostensibly enforced and the Animal Welfare Act if it doesn't have tigers regulations so it's not like it has requirements that Relate to specific complex needs of a cat. It's regulations like making sure. Animals have water food space to stand up turnaround the white down. They see that every now and then so the regulations that they're really like very low threshold regulation. There are only about one hundred. Usda inspector for over five thousand regulated emphases and so..

The Steph Curry comparisons are unfair to Trae Young, but they won't go away

"We now safely say the trae young is the next steph curry. I if you want to. I don't know there's so many other things that I have to worry about. I don't if you WANNA do that. Go ahead you'RE NOT GONNA I'm not GonNa Yell at you and go. He's not the next steph curry. I do like this though the approaches. Yeah but does he play defense? Can we stop with this? How many how many guys play defense in the NBA? But let me stop somebody in crunch time. Can anybody stop him by being declared the next anybody? You're already less than them. Because that's your title like Steph. Curry was the first do it that way and so the next curry means you're automatically below them. You're an imitator. I mean it's great. He's fantastic player but he's basically modeling his craft. Well that's why you don't want people were there. Everybody's looking for the next Larry Bird. Mike member Keith. Van Horn as the next Larry Bird now. Luca Danni checks next Larry Bird. No LUCA IS DIFFERENT THAN LARRY. Bird he might be better than Larry. Bird a when it's all said and done on out there we keep waiting for the next Michael Jordan. Kobe became the original. The first Koby we keep going. Oh He's the next and and you're not who is ever the next. We love comparisons. We love cops but it doesn't always work that way and usually if it's a white guy who's good then you find another white guy who is you know got similar skillset. Glad Yeah. Googles is the next Larry Bird UNC. But until that person becomes the first they're always going to be on next you know because you haven't seen it yet so it hasn't even been identified. When do you graduate to? I'm no like when did Kobe. He's not the next Jordan. He's Kobe did he. Oh I think he did well. No he wasn't the next. Nobody's the next Jordan. You can't be now possible now if you want to say. He plays like him great when Kobe went black. Mamba then he became the original Kobe. And he wasn't the next Michael Jordan. Because we realize there's not going to be another Larry Bird just not. There'll be players who might be similar. Might be better. But there's that's the original Muhammed Ali. This not the original. Might be guys who turn out to be better. But they're the originators. Yeah pulling yeah like Koby Bryant. He he appeared to watch documentaries he admittedly modeled everything after Michael Jordan and he came up about this short of having an equal career to Michael Jordan. If you look I mean considering how close he was to the time of Michael Jordan. He over and he was really close to having an equal career.

"And seven or something like thirty five and eight and because what he was doing on the side it should all work out out. It just didn't because he got online poker and different things lost a lot of the money that he he should have won. Okay I then moved to Palmer. Tina the producer of the movie of venture capitalists. WHO's been involved a lot of things? I knew him from being involved faneuil. He's on the original board for handle handle. I asked Paul who he was telling about himself. And how he got into. The movie. So Tommy's my first cousin. Dad's brothers My Day job jobs. I run a venture. Capital firm invested a lot of companies and sports gaming and gambling worked with a lot of professional athletes. Backers of my companies was on the board of Fan Dole for five five years was the first. US investor. And when I was involved in one of the companies my dad called me up. Says Cousin Tommy's under a federal wiretap. Don't answer the phone the next morning I read. ESPN's front page and it said referee. Tim donaghy under investigation. And it didn't take rocket science to figure out that those things were related plated. These two guys have been best friends since I was born. They're both older than me. They've been best friends since so I was like okay but we are I I so so four years went by these guys were incarcerated. You know you might talk about that when we get to that these guys went. They didn't put them in know. Country Clubs Up's the League was out to make sure that there is an example of these guys and after four years. Tommy got out Tommy's trying to get back on his feet and he got offered a life rights steal from a third party and it was one of the it was one of the most egregious contracts I had ever read. I mean they were if if anyone was trying to take advantage of you it was these guys and so I said Tommy how by Your Life Rights. I mean. He's literally just like a favor. You know the guy a couple of bucks get him on his feet and a couple of lucky breaks happened including running into an old friend who was from Haverford who be colby buyer twice when he was on lower. Marian guy named Andy Callahan who is a burgeoning screenwriter. Who went to school with the two guys wrote the hangover visit? Andy You WANNA meet my cousin and the two of them spent two years on the phone going back and forth north script and then the ball started rolling. And we're like Oh my God maybe maybe watching make a movie out of this thing. I then asked Tim as this movie. Movie was being made and and Tommy to how did they feel about this movie being made about what they were doing about this whole scheme they were running running in great detail. How did they feel about this movie? Being made I was approached a lot about you know movies being done but I was kind of sensitive about the whole thing was really hard on my family. And it's going to be hard to relive it. It was hard to relive it last night. It was hard to you know see The pain of the cost so many people. So it's tough to You know continue to have the story coming back up even though it's ten years old so you know. Unfortunately I've just come to the realization that it's part of my life and what I did. It's not easy but you know you. I then asked him about his relationship with his dad. Tim's father referee as well college. How he got into it? How did he get into riffing? How much his father helped how how that was important? theme of the movie. The father son. I asked him about that. My father father was one of the top college basketball referees. For about twenty five years this area did the final four for three straight years so when I graduated from Villanova bovine a couple of different jobs didn't like any of them. I had started refereeing and my mom said that the kitchen table night launch pursuer careers and NBA referee. I thought how could I really do that. I've made a couple of phone calls set a couple of letters next thing I know I was out in California a couple summer leagues and and got chosen to be in the CBA which was at the time the minor leagues of the NBA. From there. They were looking for younger. Referees and I was hired at the age of Twenty Six uh running up and down the floor Michael Jordan Shaquille O'Neal Toby Bryant top world. What was your like apprenticeship in severe Long I was three years in full-time making one hundred dollars a game and given twenty dollars a day for food so tim was no you know glamorous life at that time it was a lot of this and I think there was twenty five of us in out of Mike Clash. Three of us were higher. So it's a lot of hard work in a lot of faith that you were going to work hard and be that person if they chose so. I was fortunate to be one of those people. Then I asked about you know any personal vendetta. That he saw referees have with players and he spoke very truthfully honestly and candidly early about that and then I asked specifically about owners. He mentioned specifically mark. Cuban who was an owner. That's kind of drew. The wrath of referees explains why so all of that is here in his answers in the NBA. Everyone knows that You know the best thing for the League is for series to go seven games after the fourth game of NBA series. I think it's something like twenty million dollars for each additional gain. So what they would do with the referees is they would sit. Did you in a locker room. It'll every morning the day of the game and go over film of the previous game and they would tell you that they want you to concentrate on certain certain things that night Liyel. Ming was traveling in the Post. And they want you to concentrate on that. Maybe Koby Bryant was moving his pivot foot they would show you play after play after flight and it always was floored that team that was down in the series. Seem like they were going to get the advantage of the calls of what the League wants you to concentrate that night and that would kind of help string the playoff series out the four five and sometimes six and seven games which would generate a lot more money the League League office and that was other stuff that I used in picking these games knowing when teams were GonNa put at an advantage or disadvantage even talked about personal vendettas about players. Sure their time with referees. Where you know you had controversy with flowers? I had problems with she'd Wallace and one night. He waited for me out in the parking lot and wanted the fistfight me. So stuff like that when you didn't get along with a player or if you did get along with if the player you know It spilled out onto the floor. I know when a lot of the Villanova guys on the floor I would make small talk with them and say You Know Talk With Father Rob and laugh and joke around you know at times. You know you'd find yourself. Maybe giving them not making up calls we've given and you know the call that they deserve where you might let that go in the flow of the game so just relationships really played a role of positive and negative within the referees out on the floor and then what about ownership you talked about I think at your when you're in the league's kind of a new owner was was mark Cuban and he had done things that no owners were doing before when mark came into the League. He really wants to hold the referees accountable because he we saw these things I kind of just threw out at you and he wanted the rules to be enforced as they were written in the rule. "Another edition of the Businesses Sports with Andrew Brand really special edition. James was shown the door by Commissioner David Stern the biggest scandal in the NBA in terms of years ago the movie is out I interviewed him and his crew and the producer panel in front of Villanova University and I'm going to have some clips here for you inside game illegal bets being made on NBA Games. I'll have that free in a minute as always percents on a bonus today bet online dot ag my rant Val and juicing up the business of the NFL with a hot oh the NFL had a lot of trading going on with Jalen Ramsey Number one enver to the stemmer to San Francisco a minute about one of the deadline because what was interesting to me this was an NBA trade this was a business of the first pick and really starting over and they have no intention of playing a keep to lead con about four and a half four point three million what's left to leave salary this year nick to take on the asset we saw little bits of Brock Osweiler for years ago where Houston five million getting a fifth round pick return it's not the same giddiness that nerds like myself have we're actually seeing moneyball type trades were the dolphins who were processing not oh you like to leave in order to get future assets now fifth round pick is not a first round pick those payroll in the League report brought a spot rack is that it's a hundred and thirty eight million dollars I needed to take on foreign million to sort of help them get to the minimum spending which by the way is only to lead goes to the dolphins of no intention of having to leave on their team you can no is worth worth Cleveland get a second rounder for sixteen million was it worth deal with it so that's my ran of the week another quick one I gotta turn to baseball the families there my childhood friends are all there my that's my home it came like fifteen years ago I was long gone from DC as a resident by then especially I know a lot of younger people listen to this podcast they're not gonNA know this name Shirley Povich my best friend growing up so I sort of sad at the heels of Shirley Povich for for decades covered back in the you know whenever nineteen twenties with Walter you know I hung out with his with his family and they were tired stories about ty Cobb hearing stories about these great Joe Dimaggio sounds even my family that got so into the nationals over the past years it's title town they got the capitals the mistakes and the nationals in we don't need to talk about their the panel about and then I'll let you hear the answers okay so again this sort of ran the bets between him and another guy named a Batista by a friend of Mine Paul Martino the cousin of Tommy who is on the panel talking about and getting paid for the information he was providing to the book the the Games that it was two thousand dollars per correct pick thirty five and eight and because what he was doing on the side it should all work out okay I then moved to Palmer Tina the producer of the movie of Venture Capitalists movie so Tommy's my first cousin Dad's brothers my day job five years was the first US investor and when I was involved in one of the companies my on a heat under investigation and it didn't take rocket science to figure out that those two things related I so so four years went by these guys were incarcerated after four years Tommy got out Tommy trying to get back on his feet and he got offered a life rights it was these guys and so I said Tommy how by your life rights I mean he's literally just like a favor you know it'll be buyer twice when he was on lower Marian guy named Andy Callahan north and then we'd a script and then the ball started rolling and we're like Oh my God this movie being made about what they were doing about this whole scheme they were running.

"A brand's rance addition of the businesses sports as we hit in early part of the NFL season it's usually time turnover he really talked about the games players but the business continues to run on and i'll do another branch rants will get into some more guests in future weeks but i wanna talk about at least three ranch here the first one i wanna talk about this idea now with jalen ramsey wanting to be traded and hear you're about to number one picks in the trade make fitzpatrick to the steelers number one pick what went on with our friend antonio brown what went on with zeke elliot went i went on with david clowney so many people are asking me is this a template is this something that's going to happen is the player empowerment become a real thing in the NFL and people are even comparing it or suggesting a comparison to the NBA so i wanna address that sort of put a kabosh on the ladder thought first of all yes while we're seeing in this year and i would say last year to cause that included aaron erin donald who tried it two years ago came back tail between his legs did not get a new contract last year of course did khalil mack as well last year and and then we get into this year all different circumstances you have a zeke elliott staying away going to kabul but coming back with a new contract you have melvin gordon staying away still away record this coming back maybe not coming back but what if he does it'll be on the same contract you david clowney a franchise tag stays away gets traded you have jalen ramsey his i mentioned were with the team but there seems to be issues there may be traded and make a pitch patrick the trade of the star safety to the steelers now that's a different kind of thing and we'll talk about that idea that the steelers might i'm sorry the the dolphins might be tanking a word that gets me upset we'll get we'll get there in a minute is it a template and here's my answer yes and no and really yes if you are special now that's the caveat you can play this game you can leverage teams you can in use your power antonio brown is part of this as well but you better be special and i mean elite like truly elite if you're gonna play this and and what is this this is agitating a front office to the point of them doing something now there are a lot of front offices is that if you try this no matter how special it's not gonna work try this with bill belichick even if you're tom brady good luck with that now the t- the players that have been able to do it you know have you gotten out of their situations by being pains can you know what like brown or have extricated themselves because of an organizational strategy like fitzpatrick and and we'll see what happens with ramsey the players have gotten paid like clowney hasn't gotten paid yet gotten traded got themselves out but the players has gotten paid like brown which we thought was a big contract in oakland that turned out not to be and of course elliott yes special elite so i guess the question comes down to are they empowered yeah with a huge caveat you better be top fifteen player because look at what's it's happening with the LA chargers melvin gordon and this is one of those careful what you wish for he wants an upgraded contract they say okay you're making five this year we're going to give you a deal long term it's gonna average ten double what you're making this year he says no way that's not good enough that's way below top a market i'm staying out they say good he says i want to be traded they say good get us a good trade he tries no oh they say we're done come or not come that is usually what's going to happen now melvin gordon is a really good player but he's not a leaked so there's your template if you're not elite that's probably the best it's going to happen you're going to get an offer but it's not gonna be the offer you want so with melvin gordon careful what you wish for i think the the compared to the NBA is off because NBA players a have fully guaranteed contracts which makes it so different than NFL contracts even the elite of the elite NFL contracts we talked about julio jones just getting that it's a five year deal for jones and everyone talks about almost three those years are fully guaranteed great that's a great deal for an NFL player only only a handful of players like his teammate matt ryan like kirk cousins have three fully guaranteed years but NBA players have all that NBA players players can nonleague dictate terms of the contract cannot only extricate themselves from old situations to new like antonio davis i'm sorry anthony davis sorry but they can bring along players with them NFL players don't in have that isn't happening so to compare now i mean the one comparison is yes NFO players with extraordinary talent went are leveraging their way out of situations okay NBA players with extraordinary talent are not only leveraging into the situation they want they're bringing along they're buddies and they're dictating contract terms where we find out kawhi leonard and paul george not only extricated their situations to get to to the same place but only signed to your commitments an option after to go somewhere else it's a complete dictation of terms as if they wrote the deal and maybe they did so this is where we're going that's my rant right on that two things primarily can NBA players can our NFL players more empowered yes if they're elite truly elite super elite special special and are becoming like NBA no 'cause NBA players have massive advantages they been the players league since lebron's decision asian nine and a half years ago and that is only getting stronger while NFL players are just getting that point probably aren't even at the point of quote unquote the decision decision in the NBA in two thousand and so that's my first of the week there's a new daily sports podcast from wandry laundry was called the lead is for every type of sports fan wants to go beyond the box score it's every weekday morning it's going to bring you one big story from the all star team that let their local or national reporters could be terrible a call from last night in the NFL it could be whatever's going on it's hosted by sports rutta arctic kavita davidson over well about award journalist andrews couto they'll take you close this story that comprehensive reporting fascinating clips exclusive in reasonable hear anyone else so stay tuned the end of this podcast for preview of the lead don't forget to subscribe lead on apple podcasts were you ever you're listening to this right now okay next is about the quarterbacks i am seeing what's going on in the NFL l. like everyone else you're sort of wondering what is going to be the fact of not having superstar quarterbacks in the league we had quite a weekend in this past weekend were two of the market quarterbacks the most marketable players in the league went down one beth rob ben rothlisberger with with the pittsburgh steelers for the year for the year that's that's drastic and then of course drew brees is going to be gone we think for six weeks maybe more maybe less with a thumb injury these are massive departures when you talk about players like that and word comes out that a player player was told not to hit tom brady too hard by the referee listen everyone's asking me i'm the business guy how have they impacted is to lose these quarterbacks and obviously it's not good and i'm partial to green bay when we lost aaron rodgers to the last whatever years you know is a bummer it's a bummer for fans it's a bummer for fans of the league the brand is lesser without rothlisberger without darnold for few weeks without breeze for a few weeks potentially cam newton for a few weeks yeah it's tough but it is a brand it is not the NBA we go back to that discussion for teams are the brand not the players teams are really the brand i think the issue becomes which could happen to pittsburgh definitely may baby new orleans if they get bad that's the problem the problem is not losing the stars it's if they get bad now some people would say that's connected obviously got mason rudolph instead of ben rothlisberger quarterback you're gonna be bad that will be a problem especially as we get later this season listen in the record becomes out of play for the playoffs you know again going back to rogers a couple of years ago it was one thing to lose rogers on the packers but then they started losing if somehow they kept their head above water with whoever the backup boys brett hundley or whoever could be in there yeah there wouldn't be that much of a drop off in interest at least on the packers side but you need to do well so a bigger issue and i know people say these are inextricably linked losing your star quarterback and being a bad team but as long as they keep their head above water they should be fine the problem is really the steelers there are marquee brand if they go in the toilet if things go really south i know it's its own too but it's early early if things go really south that's going to be a big problem you can have more than a few of those because the overall interests in the legal drop off if you start getting marquee team's not doing well so a couple years ago again the packers got bad that's going to hurt the league so it's it's it's twofold so i'm saying the leaks fine it with losing these quarterbacks and lessen toll one is not bad had but a number of teams go south because of those laws quarterbacks can the saints keep it alive until breeze comes back what's gonna happen to the the steelers are they're going to be other losses market teams but if you lose a rogers if you lose a deck prescott if you lose obviously a brady you you know if you lose them a homes of course you know it's gonna have a huge effect because those teams may go south are the patriots gonna go south without brady radio that god forbid that would happen well you know we'll see maybe not with teams in their division who knows in a gun darnold it was obviously a marketable name for the jets he's gone for a while so we'll see what happens with that.
