"That is beginning to change. Let's find out by talking to sahad of Sharma who covers the cubs for the athletic side of welcome back. Oh man, I hope I hope that it started to change because I really would like to write about actual baseball games again because it's hard to write about baseball games when the team you're covering is out of contention by May or early May as the case was last year. Right. And when that happens, there are fewer people who want to go see that team play, which leads to my first question according to Noah Frank's cubs essay in the BP annual cubs per game attendance last season was their lowest since 1998. They were still 5th in the national league and 9th in the majors because the cubs are going to draw decently no matter what they do, but it was their worst showing in a while and it's not much of a mystery way given the team's recent results and departures, so how fed up were fans entering this winter and did the cubs do enough with Swanson and taehyung and Bellinger and Mancini et cetera to win back any hearts and minds and ticket purchases. Yeah, I mean, they were pretty fed up and understandably so, right? You typical fans aren't going to really want to dive into the process of it all and contracts and arbitration and, oh, we're heading towards a cliff with all these players. But the heart and soul of the group that they watched when a rural series was all traded away in 2021. That has to be difficult for any fan. They don't want to hear about how good peak grow arms are on can be or Kevin el contra. It could be not at the time of those trades. Certainly not. Maybe later on this previous segment. Sure, sure. But that was hard and there was very little, I think the lockout led to kind of a frenetic pace of signing players for every team and the cubs outside of adding sais Suzuki who could be a great player if he's on the field and healthy. It's hard to get a lot of juice for that. Strowman was right before the lockout. And then it was a bunch of just not great players, right? Poor decisions or players that didn't pan out like Jonathan VR and andrelton Simmons and stuff like that. I don't know how fans are supposed to be excited for that. So last year was hard on them. And as I was saying, they were out of it by May. They went on, I want to say it was I can't remember the exact number now, but I want to say it was like a three and 15 stretch at one point in April. And it just was like, yeah, this team can't come back from that. They don't have the talent to do that. And I think if you talk to people in the front office and the coaching staff did admit that last year wasn't about, oh, everything went wrong. Sure, they had a lot of injuries, especially to the rotation early on. But there was a talent deficit that they were working with. And I think that's the big thing that you look at this off season Patrick and I wrote about it a lot, setting up a floor for this team and just making sure that this team, even if they're hit with a couple injuries, even if things don't go perfectly, this won't be just an outright disaster come May or June. You want to have a team that's kind of hanging in there. So our fans excited after this off season, I think they won back some fans. I think if they didn't get dansby Swanson, if they struck out on the shortstops, oh my, I don't know what that situation would have been. The fans were already upset. As guys were coming off the board and still Swanson was signed, there was just angst and you go by Twitter and your mentions or the comments on your stories, not the best barometer of all fans, but still you can get a decent pulse on things and they were freaking out and I think it ended up being all right. Swanson, there's a plan in place, go with the defense, hope the offense comes together, defense and pitching should work. We can talk about the pitching more, but I think they're higher internally on the pitching and what they've done to kind of maximize pitchers. Over the years, then maybe externally people how people view the cubs and how projection systems may view this pitching staff. Well, we definitely will talk about the pitching, but I think we have to start with Swanson. And I'm curious, you know, there are a couple of different ways that I want us to think about this. The first is for you to take us through what the process was for them, signing him, was he their guy amongst those big four from the get go, were they interested in any of the others, and then as they were thinking through the evaluation of him, he obviously had a terrific 2020, it is something of an outlier compared to his other seasons, which weren't bad, but weren't, you know, 6 and a half wins good either. So how did they settle on him and sort of what are their expectations for where he's going to land between, you know, his great 2020 and some of his other seasons. Yeah, my understanding of how everything played out was he was pretty high up on their list. They really valued the idea that he's going to be a short stop for likely they hope the duration of that contract. I don't think you can say that about the rest of the shortstops that signed. I wouldn't say that about Xander Bogart certainly Correa could move off short and then I know Turner, I think it's split as how people kind of feel about his defensive value. I think Bogart's, they never really got very deep there. I don't think they talked to him very much. I think there was talk with Korea. There was talk with Turner and Turner. I think they quickly realized that market was just never going to be where they were going to go and the Phillies kind of set the market there and that was that just wasn't going to happen.

"I've gotten to the point with him where I wouldn't rule it out. He clearly a surprising everybody Remember in spring training, I asked Mike Trout. Okay, You know what Could Otani be capable of now that the angels are taking the bubble wrap off them and you know, trout. I mean, trout is Mr You know, Mr Glass half full, Mr Optimism. And he absolutely was saying, You know what he could have a year as a pitcher? He could have 10 plus wins. 30 plus home runs. What did he miss? That He clearly is getting a lot better, and we're seeing him. You know that. That all manifest I do think it's possible. And you do wonder, too. You know as we go along if he starts to satisfy sites on 60, what is he capable of? Because he loves the stage. We really learned that about him this year. Now they sort of had the bubble wrap taken off. I think he just loves challenges. If he starts chasing 60 with all the cops we make to him and Babe Ruth, my head's going to explode. Like if that ends up being an actual story, and he starts to calm. Babe Ruth was 60 potential home runs that would just be out of this world. I was talking to Shawn Estes last week about Otani and about the future of the two way player and ask those things that Otani is going to be a guy who inspires kids now or young players to sort of become this. But he also said he thinks it's going to hinge on a player who is an international player that the model of baseball in the United States with college Players and with high school players coming out. It's going to be tough to bring a guy through the minor leagues basically training him at both positions, whereas Otani came from Japan and already been doing both at a high level. What do you think of that take or that thought process. Well, and Sean knows far more about it than I do. But I do think that he his point. And if I'm reading it correctly, is that he basically saying that the imagination is not as flowing over here as it is in other places where, you know, especially professional organizations, they effectively make these guys choose. I mean, you know, I've heard stories about Frey Freeman when he was pitching in high school. How good he was Andrelton Simmons around 97 98 miles an hour. That wasn't even a consideration. It was like, Well, you're either going to be a pitcher or you're going to be a hitter, and there have been some examples of that. But I don't. I'm not as confident that there's necessarily going to be a high volume of that. Because I just think Otani is so special. I wish I could remember the first person I heard mentioned this, but I've stolen it about five or six times. Otani is best conference, not Babe Ruth. Connie's Beth Comp is Bo Jackson that you have someone at an extremely high level. Uh, master two sets of completely different skills. Which is I think why you know Kevin Durant. He's showing up in Yankee Stadium to watch him. My J. J. Watt is tweeting about him because those guys understand how special that is for someone you know, to master those completely different sets of athletic skills. That is a great compound home Run Derby tonight. Real quick on the Giants best record in baseball. How aggressive at the deadline. Do you think they'll be? Very aggressive because the players have earned it and because they have all that payroll flexibility, which I'm sure you guys have talked about. You know, Once you go past this year and Brandon belt Brandon Crawford come off the books You know you're going to have an option year on Buster Posey and the presumption among teams. The other teams is that they'll pick up that option for next year. They they they could do a lot of things. And let me tell you something. You know, month ago we looked at this is being The sort of market where the prices are really high. The way that this is developed in the National League West Teams are mostly responsible for this. It's very polarized, and as we sit here today, they're only 12 teams that have a better chance of making the playoffs better than 38%. And what that means is it's going to turn into a absolute buyer's market. And so let's say, for example, this is just me riffing. I don't have specific information. Let's say the Cubs go down the last 72 hours for the deadline. They're selling Rizzo by as Bryant. Uh, they're going to be calling around two teams in all likelihood, saying, Look, we can't find the deal we want. What do you give him for us? They're going to be selling at 60 cents on the dollar. And some of these guys, the twins will be doing that as well. I can't tell you specifics about what the Giants could get out of that. Darren a tremendous position to add, Uh because of the you know the lack of long term obligations that they have financial great stuff. But should we look forward to seeing you tonight? And it's always great talking to you. Thank you so much. Thanks, Buster. Thanks for having me guys. Thanks for listening to podcast. Yeah, of course. Yeah. That Buster underscore ESPN. Like you said, the podcast is great. In fact, it's also got he mentioned Peter Alonso and the pitchers and how important they are to the home run Derby. He's got some of that on there as well. So make sure that you take a listen by the way you missed any that could've came br dot com. The entire interview, and we'll get all the interviews up there, Buster being the latest, right. We told you something that we were texting about back and forth this morning about the home run Derby will give you that coming up next about 20 minutes. We'll give you the four pieces of sound today that you need to hear in the foreplay coming up next here on the SportsCenter. You're smart speaker.

I guess Unless you're the Reds, A frustrating weekend has come and gone. The Big Three free agents at shortstop. Or now all off the board. Marcus Simeon. Andrelton Simmons Now d D Gregorius. Have gone back and forth since the DD signing with the Phillies, and I'm not I'm I don't know if I'm in the minority or the majority. I'm not. And I wasn't last week worked up about D D Gregorius. I wasn't worked up leading into the weekend and not worked up about him going to the Philadelphia Phillies because two years at 30 Million DD does some things but he also doesn't do some things and 92 years of 30. When, really. Ideally, it would take a one year stopgap for the Reds at its okay with me, but there is frustration. I just can't figure out where to stop on my frustration. Meter of I've spent some time frustrated with the front office and the owner. I've spent some time frustrated with Major League baseball and the system as a whole absolute time frustrated with Cobain's impact on Major league baseball, I'm what I'm going to try to do tonight. Early on. I'm going to try to read the room. I'm curious at this stage the way this Red's off season is gone and the way their pursuit of a shortstop has unfolded. And to this point their off season to do list was improved the offense after a franchise worst to 12 batting average and upgrade the shortstop position. And that hasn't taken place. So I wonder where you would slot yourself on the scale of frustrated Too apathetic. I guess some could remain optimistic comes certainly not ruling that out In the reason I bring this up. I was struck by the number of people over the weekend who in some way, shape or form. Said To me, texted me, emailed me, tweeted me. Facebook posted me and said If they made in the right zip. They don't care about winning that. I'm done caring about this team voicing the frustration of last year, everything that happened. The return on the investment was two weeks, a good baseball and then no runs scored in the postseason. And now the Air quotes, reallocating of funds. I'm going to try to read the room when we continue on where you are related to what the Reds have done or have not done at this point in the bigger picture. What is now? Next. What's the next phase of the Reds? Pursuit of a shortstop? If there is a phase of the pursuit of a shortstop, five on 37491 7800, the big one and pounds 700 on a TNT will dig into that next. The right fielder is outfielder still crowded the Cassie and nose still in the mix, so I None of that was really anything that was in plain or should have been for the Reds, But I gotta I gotta look at a guy like Andrelton Simmons. $10.5 million does not seem like a lot of money for an upgraded shortstop. Road doesn't so I don't know what's going on. All I know is spring training is like three weeks down the road. And there's a gaping hole. "All that kind of stuff, right? It's It's really hard. I get it. In that If you are a White Sox fan, and if you're listening, you are if you are a White Sox fan. And you have the ability As as a ball club. So look Atyour division rival the Minnesota Twins, who by the way Just added Andrelton Simmons on a one year contract for gosh, now I'm getting Marcus Simeon's one year deal. And can you look that up for me? Tyler can grab that real quick. I think, Sonny and got 18 with the Blue Jays and I want to say that Angels and got something like 12 with the twins. But memories little goofy there Anyway. Point is, if you got Nelson Cruz out there, and you can take away from the twins, 16 home runs in a 60 games stretch a three or three batting average of 3 97 on base percentage. My God and a 5 95 slugging percentage. Then that makes not only you better. But it make sure they don't have that to tell her what you find out. How and a half million Brandon. Thank you Appreciate it, and the Twins team is I'm a big fan of, you know, I was talking earlier about how many throughout the season throughout our our talks Young White sac's weekly. I'm going to discuss the starting rotation is being Maura than five. Really, because that's what it takes to get through a year. I'm also you're also gonna find out that I like defense a lot. There are some places I'm willing to sacrifice like second base, perhaps just philosophically, but I like defense a lot. Minnesota Twins. Scenes 2019 have gone from Jorge Polanco and Miguel so no on the left side of that infield, Polanco, it shorts, you know, a third who are atrocious defenders. Josh Donaldson, albeit for 25 games, because I think you have the hamstring thing for most of the early part of the season, and Jorge Polanco in 20. Lanka is not a very good defensive shortstop, although was better for the 60 games in 20. Josh Johnson is a very good third baseman, too. Now, Josh Donaldson. And Andrelton Simmons on the left side. No, that seems had a down defensive year last year. He also had believe it's an ankle and foot injury. That really, really messed him up. You know, I don't know. He wasn't quite the health of all that. Is that fair to question. Whether or not at his age that elite top tier defense still exists. But even still, if you're getting very good defense and whatever bad he wants to bring be offensively that twins left side is pretty tough right now. So in order to take away from a division rival. Add to yourself provide something that maybe you don't have in. Or maybe you'd like more of a Nelson Cruz. You could do it. He fits the lineup. He's another right handed bat. And I know the White Sox and White Sox fans would love a little bit more pop from the left hand side, but name for me a team in baseball that's going no, No, We're good on on left handed, Pop. Thank you so much. Everybody wants left headed pop, You know, too. There's you know, the Blue Jays moved with Simeon is interesting. It's a really flushed out team with a whole bunch of fun hitters in that lineup and somebody to It's a team to concern yourselves with if you're the White Sox, who are still as we talked about quite a bit, are still projected to be one of, if not the best team in the American League. The Yankees with their handful of additions of, I think, surpassed them and expected war via Fangraphs. I get that that's fine..

I've also written about the Hall of Fame. The voting process. The case for bonds and Clemens the case for Scott Rolen, and more all at 700 wlw dot All right, let's begin here and I'll open up the lines right out of the Shu. Because I want to talk some reds that was a solid hour of baseball from 6 to 7. It was predominantly Hall of Fame. Lets do reds Now you've had a chance to let it sink in and process. The fact that Marcus Simeon is out Andrelton Simmons is out. The Korean Star shortstop is out. Freddy Galvis is out. And the Reds are currently out a shortstop. We know the issues with the offensive year ago they hit 2 12 1 of the worst offenses in the history of rights baseball. We know what the obvious upgrade was for this team in the off season to get a shortstop. The musical chairs We talked about last night it spends and it spends in it. It stops and seats or grabbed, and now it stops and and the Reds are or left looking, and they don't have anybody. Phillies also need somebody. That leaves Didi Gregorius as The loan for the most part, the lone free agent option at shortstop. They're certainly trade options is a possibility. But I think we all agree and the Reds have made this clear. That's why they're pursuing shortstop Jose Garcia. They love him. They just don't love him enough Right now. The put him in a position to be in everyday shortstop in Major League baseball in 2021. They didn't really want to do it last year, they eventually had to. They did it, and it was tough to watch. It's got a glove. There's no question about that. He batted 67 times. Last year, he struck out 26 times He hit 1 94. He played in 24 games. He walked once. You want once in 24 games. Again. They love him. Perfect, perfect world. He is their opening day shortstop of 2022. But no team with hopes dreams, aspirations of being in contention in 2021. Is going to feel the team with Jose Garcia at shortstop. The young man has not taken in it bad at double A. He hasn't taken it back at Triple A They jumped him from high a last year and three men. The deep end of major league baseball, double A is the most important development level of a minor league baseball player. He blew right past that to the major leagues. Kyle Farmer. Everybody likes He's not an everyday shortstop. He's just not. I mean, they nontendered him to begin with. They sign him to a split contract. He makes exit the place in the majors this year he makes except spends a place in the minors This year. He's versatile. He can play multiple positions, but he's not an everyday shortstop, and he certainly can't hit well enough. He certainly can't hit right handed pitching well enough to be considered a legitimate everyday shortstop in Major League baseball. Oh, by the way, he's played Ah, just short of 90 innings at the position, and he will be 30 in the upcoming season again. If you have hopes and dreams and aspirations of a contending in a division you don't have Kyle firmer as your everyday shortstop. So riddle me this Batman. One of the Reds do Jon Heyman says the number is looking at two years. 30 million. Sell Jim Boden today on the athletic guest. Two years 24 million. Again back to that perfect world. The Reds could get somebody plug him in for this year is a stopgap the bridge and then hand things off the Jose Garcia in 2022. The Reds got the worst, arguably the worst production of any team in major league baseball last year at shortstop, Depending on which metric. Do you look at it was the Reds of the worst or the Pirates? The worst And if the Pirates were the words the Reds with the second worst They need a shortstop. What do you want him to do? We'll run through some scenarios is we come back and grab some of your calls? 5137491 7800, the big £1.700 on a TNT were going to learn something very interesting about this team about this ownership. Over the next month, maybe month. Plus, maybe they don't have their shortstop by the start of spring training the first game, But one month from today they played their first game. "Saeko? I mean, it's just startling, right? I mean, sadly kind of used to bad news, but Sometimes it's worse than others. I guess not to compare things, but I mean something just hit home more than other ones. And this one really hit home and Sekou Smith, Mark Spears were guys that were super nice to me when I was just starting this business doing a nightly radio show on On serious Sanga was just serious, not Sirius XM On black, Shawn said. They didn't have the even answer our texts and emails. And yet they answered quickly and 99 hours of the time. They said Yes. And then when they came on They were awesome. I mean, sake, who was just Ah, super super guy, and it sucked to read this yesterday. Um, and it was sad but also, you know, uplifting to read all of the people remembering him so well, but I mean, 48 husband, Dad, and it's just It shouldn't be like this. Yeah, I know. I felt the same way. So we'll always remember Saeko around here on the show, No doubt about it. He was awesome for us. He was absolutely awesome. That said, That's a big loss for the sports world Sports Media World NBA world and for our world, no doubt about it. We got headlines this morning. Where do we begin with the headlines? Guys. It's not Curt Schilling, not Barry Bonds, not Roger Clemens, not Scott Rolen. Nobody elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame yesterday. And since covert kept the Veterans Committee from picking someone last month, there are no New Hall of Famers. For the first time since 1968 years ago, writers didn't elect anyone. But at least that year, There were veteran committee choices. Shilling missing Cooperstown by just 16 votes see then as to be removed from next year's balance. Preferring to wait for that Veterans committee to consider his resume. Instead, Bonds and Clemens finishing with less than 62% of the vote, they have one year left on this main ballot. JT real mood, So remains a Philly After all, the All Star catcher expected to re sign five years $115 million. That annual average value of 23.1 mil is a record for a catcher, just more than what Joe Mauer once got from the Twins. The Blue Jays were signing former A's infielder Marcus Simeon, and the Twins at all World shortstop Andrelton Simmons. Heisman winner Devante Smith chose not to weigh in yesterday at the Senior Bowl. He wants to wait for Alabama's pro day but this is fueling concerns. That he is under the 611 75 that the tide list him at Dolphin's head coach Brian Flores does not care. Good players are good players. Good players can I think I think we all can see that this guy's a very good player made a lot of plays in college made a lot of plays and the big game's biggest game to feel his opinion is important. Because Smith says he into its hunger by Loa have talked about a reunion in Miami. The Finns could use the third pick on Smith. Now that I don't think they have to use the third pick right. He probably go later than that. I'm trying to think what's the other part that they get? Do you think you could go that high five. He's a top five project. I mean, he's Mel Kiper just pulled it up, has a man number two of the Jets. Yeah, He's not getting out of the top sheet. I would say I thought I saw Mark yesterday that had a bit like 10. The Dolphins pick a number 18. So they got number three number 18, so he doesn't fall the 18. I wouldn't assume What would you use the number three pick on him. Maybe I don't think he goes to the Jets number two, though, And remember, there's no combine this year, just all these pro days and personal workouts. So we won't have the hysteria of combine risers or Fuller's this year, either, although that that did also remind that the Vontae Smith and people Lottie now both have something in common. They won't get on a scale in front of people. Now. It's you know, under seal. Why you just come out of left field consistently and try to drop elbows on belies a reason for it. It was too cute up on a tee not to take the shot. He be made a reference that Devante Smith not want to get on scale, but I can't let it pass the Listen. There's no I can't let it pass. I gotta cue it up in and out of the park. And it's just not a shot. He is never directed. There's like a three minute preamble there. Rush Sports day and then o. P s, by the way people with himself. I mean, look, we all this is in a very said showing a lot of ways. We're just on a and save Christmas. I'm trying to live, but we got to spice this up a little bit here. He will get on a scale in front of people. Neither will divide they Smith. The joke. Was there a cute it up. Thanks for spicing it up. We appreciate it. Yeah. Yeah, I really needed that wrong. I mean, you could could you just talked about all the papa Gino's that Eli pounded yesterday? This happened yesterday. Birth Dog party. He had a good time. He won't get on the scale today, either. You know, he gave them Wait. How much did you spend on that? Overall? It ended up the tab in the coming $113. Just, uh, that was 55. Yeah, And then there was taxes. And then I didn't realize that didn't include his actual daycare price, And then I had to tip them on top of it. So the grand total ended up being more money that I pay for my daughter's Day, Carol Week and then Eli and all of his friends wanted tickets for the skee ball. And so they had to play that not jobs before you know it, you know, a party for five dog suddenly goes crazy. You're at 113 Bucks later yesterday more as through a third birthday for Eli. Now, this was no parents allowed. No humans allowed just the doggy day care center and all of his friends. They had puppet chinos, which is a fraud, reading a frothy type of mix made by Starbucks that they could nose around in. They had snow pause. What do you call that? The A school for the garage. He paused. The A frosty paws ice cream. He had some party favors and pictures. Some birthday. Some birthday butts to sniff. That was pretty exciting for them..

"One that booked him so many times throughout the years. I mean, dating back to our overnight days. We've been doing this now for eight years. Say cool. My guess is has joined us. Two or three times a year for all eight of those years, so he's probably done the show 20 some odd times. What was your experience? With Saeko. So my experience and you hit on a couple of these things with guests ghosting you are guests texting you back. Look, booking a guest seems easy, but it's actually um or one of the more stressful parts of being a producer in radio specifically because It is out of your control. You a guy could tell you? Yes. And he could blatantly not show up. Ah, guy could tell. You know a guy could tell you? Yes. And cancel last minute a guy who you think could come on. You could text and you wait all day or email wait'll. They They just never answer you. And you had hopes for it Say Christmas was in such a rarefied air is for his guests and radio in that You knew. Basically there was a high probability he was going to come on. If you ask them, and you also knew there was a high probability he was going to come on. If you ask them an hour before the show two hours for the show. He didn't need to pre plan it. And when he did say yes, he wasn't just somebody threw on to throw on was gonna be opinionated was gonna be smart and was going to be a great 10 to 15 minutes of radio or our along That window is for a guest. And those guys that are really good, really smart, excellent guests and will say yes to you Within an hour's notice. This sounds crazy or rare, rare. Rare. In fact, I would say in the history of me producing and CBS sports radio There are two names that come to mind. They were sacred. Smith and their Charles Davis were both excellent guests and will always answer me even if they can't come on and on more than gracious And as you said, explanations about what? Why they can't Sacred. Smith didn't always have to be gracious with this time I didn't always have to be that kind. You're telling me every time we've concept and sacred space and see this portrait was always having a good day. But he always always always treated us with kindness with respect and with happiness, And when the news broke yesterday, it absolutely ripped my heart out. I felt so terrible knowing that he had the Children. And and knowing that age I mean, 48 years old. It's just too young. So sacred Smith. I owe a lot and we joke a lot about my my problems. As a producer say Christmas has failed me out more than more than a couple of times. And I owe him a great deal of gratitude. What a great man the world lost Just a great man yesterday. For sure. And Cove. It's an interesting thing in the sports world because we haven't had Somebody young fit healthy in athletics. Pass away because of this, And so I think for sports fans, it oftentimes feels like Justin annoyance. So guys get Kobe did there on the covert list. Okay, but they all come back to play again. We've had coaches like next David Wolfe Nick Saving it. 69 70 years old can get it and be fine and coach to a national championship. What ill effects do we see? This is not a political commentary. This is just a reality as us in sports. We're hearing Cove it. It's why we're not at games. That's why guys can't play. It's why games are delayed, but it's not really, really affecting. These players in terms of life or death or these coaches. We just haven't seen that part of it. This puts a face to that were now you feel like you've known somebody intimately, even it's just through sports. That you've lost because of it. And that is a very jarring thing. Because again, Sekou it 48 years old seem to be the picture of health as well. So it's just like here today. Gone tomorrow. It doesn't register in your brain. It's a really hard one, and then on top of it is all of the things that you mentioned. He was a great guy and a good guy, a great guy and a great writer, and it's just jarring and devastating and sad. And yesterday when you watched All the things said about Sekou. They were all right. All of them is that everybody just had this universal appreciation for him. Andrew Bogus, says our headlines this morning. Bogue's How'd you feel upon hearing the news of Saeko? "Of any substance, so it's dd or bust for the Reds. wise or The trade route. Trevor story. Carlos Correa. Somebody like that. Re capping Marcus Simeon earlier goes to the Blue Jays one year 18 million. Freddy Galvis went to the Orioles for one year. One million and Roten's We have Moag zesty would say We've got action and Andrelton Simmons to the twins. I will say this. The 10 million for Simmons is closer to making sense to me than the 18 Million for Simeon. Hey, God bless you. If you want to give Marcus Simeon 18 million, And then there is a suppose there's a chance. He's more of the 19 or the 2019 version, who finished third of the M V. P. But the track record says that's the out liar and the rest of his career. He's a tick below an average major league player who strikes out a lot. And whose defense isn't all that great. Now there is a mean if he if he flashes again, the flash was third best in the American League two years ago. Andrelton Simmons 10.5 is in my mind. That's that number doesn't like, shock me or surprise that that seems doable. DD if if Simmons got 10, What do you think Jeff DD gets? Ah! 40 15. I was gonna say 14, 14 or 15 all right somewhere around there and is it let's let's be real. If that's the Reds, then they're gonna have to trade somebody or they're gonna have to expand their payroll. Because what I'm led to believe of where their payroll is going to wind up. They don't have the money right now to give and or did you give d d Gregorius 14, or 15 million? So Nick Kroll's got to figure out something. Who won left Trevor story. What do we say? Jeff? Trevor story has well, one year at what 17 million right there around 18. Yeah, and in the downside to trading, obviously, as you then have to give up prospects is well in how we'll see how badly the Rockies want to get out from under Trevor story and what they'll accept in terms of you taking the salary versus you having to give them Prospects. "The guest get you involved. Let's do some headlines. And then we'll go when we're waiting on the developing situation in Major league baseball this moment where we are moments away from the announcement of the Hall of Fame class of 2021. Will any player crossed the threshold of 75, or at least get to the threshold of 75% of the vote? We're monitoring and wondering where Curt Schilling winds up where Barry Bonds winds up where Roger Clemens winds up percentage wise, how much of a boost to Scott rolling get from a year ago? And where does that position him for? Perhaps next year, all of that being monitored details when we know it. USA Today reports the Mets have offered Trevor Bauer Ah contract that would make him baseball's highest paid player based on an annual average salary. The deal would eclipse Yankee pitcher Gerry Cole's 36 year average value, but would be shorter than Cole's nine year deal. There are other reports today, denying This news the Phillies keep their guy re signing free agent catcher J T Real Moto. Davis Love the third to be US captain for the Presidents Cup in 2022, a Quail Hollow club. In Charlotte, North Carolina. It's the third time love has been captain of a U. S team in the last 30 years. Those are your headlines. Let me ask a question. And I don't know I may be wrong in in ordering the show the way I am tonight, prioritizing the lead as the Baseball Hall of Fame. And I wonder. I wonder what your what your involvement today was in conversations about tonight's announcement. I wonder if you are aware Tonight was the Hall of Fame announcement for Major League Baseball. This used to be This used to be like a circle the day on the counter type of type of day. This is the day that the gates the hallowed halls that the gates of the Baseball Hall of Fame open up two iconic figures. In some cases, guys, we watched as kids others we watched his teenagers, but many we followed from the start of their career to the end of their career, and the process of reaching this point was what was fun. It was joyful. It was It was about debating statistics and in the back of the baseball cards and the awards they wanted, comparing him to other players. And if he's in that he's got to be in and well, if he's not in that he can't be in And yet in recent years from where I sit is a baseball dork, I admit that The joy, the fun. The everything that used to be about the Baseball Hall of Fame in the announcement of the class to me has been Sapped. Drained. It's been left to debate about. Character. No longer about Careers. But character and the person The Baseball Hall of Fame asked writers to consider integrity and character when judging Hall of Fame candidates Why Why does the baseball Hall of Fame throw that on the plate of the writers? Many of said, this is no longer worth it. It's too tough. It's not fun. It's not what I signed up to do. It's no longer about baseball. It's about me being judge and jury about character. Some have said I'm not voting anymore. Some didn't fill in a hit in a ballot this year. I think it went up. There were 9 10 11 12 ballots left blank this year. I guess I'm I'm curious where you would fall on this. And I guess I'd be curious why writers and I know many don't don't want this, so I'm not pinning it on them. But why're writers granted the power to set the moral standards and judge the character for inclusion into the Baseball Hall of Fame? I've never understood that. And I guess if if I were cynical and not to be mean, but is anyone judging their integrity and character in deciding Who goes into the Hall of Fame and nod. Now I'm not casting dispersions on voters. I'm just saying, it just seems odd to me that they've selected a group from 19 What 36 or 38 the first year the Hall of Fame and said, All right, you guys are the ones who get the vote and you're going to vote on this, and the criteria will include Character and integrity. And so this group Gets to sit in judgment. Of yes, numbers and awards and courage, but they get to sit in judgment of the character and the integrity of the individual and decide whether they should allow them into the hall of Fame or not. That seems odd to me and at the same time I don't think anyone if I were a writer, I say, Well, are you who's judging my integrity and anybody watching over me my integrity and my character, So I have a couple of questions for you. Is the Hall of Fame voting. Mean? There's I'll go simple. Does it mean anything to you? Is there any interest today in we are minutes away from the announcement, perhaps seconds away from the announcement..

"Knowing that the current state of health in our country puts everything in a fluid state. But But three weeks from now, Reds pitchers and catchers should be reporting to Goodyear, Arizona. They warmed up this week by picking up Seattle Perez from the Astros. Hector Perez, a right handed pitcher from the Blue Jays. Neither figures to be much of a factor in the starting rotation if it all the bullpen, But they continue to troll for pitching and their rotation, thankfully, still has Luis Castillo in it after last week's adventure with the Yankees. Who plays shortstop for this team this year. And can they finally figure out the three best outfielders? Or do we go into that five man rotation again and again and again? Lot of people think the Reds can win this thing and it down here, the NL Central But no opinion matters more than our favorite baseball analyst from fangraphs dot com is Sunday column is up right now it's up every Sunday. Is Dave Laurel. Dave, How are you on this glorious Sunday? Can I am doing well, a little extra nervous energy because I'm a big Green Bay Packer fan. But I have a hunch that you're hoping to talk baseball and not football with me. Exactly. You know, I'm if you if you're looking for some affirmation, I think the Packers win that game. But but not that my opinion matters. No, I want to talk baseball. I, The Reds are searching for a number of things and let's start with their rotation. There's Luis Castillo there, Sonny Gray. And then after that, You're talking about an aging Wade Miley Tyler Malli, who's shown a lot of lot of potential, Maybe not a realization of that potential and a guy that I think could be a huge factor in that rotation. TJ Antone. But is that good enough in your opinion boy in the NL Central, it could well be. It's a very bizarre division to try to figure out right now. Um, no, they probably need more. I mean, every team needs more. Look it with the San Diego Padres are doing. They just keep adding quality pitching and quality pitching, in part because they can afford it, or I should say want to afford it. I think every Owner in now in Major league Baseball can afford to pay players that they want to, um so Oh, yeah, they could use more. Let's not forget Jose daily on, uh I don't know how much sense of it talking about him and Cincinnati. But what I talked to Eric Jaeger's yeses and pitching coach last month. He mentioned that daily own has Added. A lot of the low on die. Think about a foot of horizontal break to a slider. You know, you know this past past summer that when you look at his background is a top prospect. He is potentially right in the middle of that rotation next year, replacing Trevor Baller. Yeah, and I don't think you can base a lot of what happened on last year at last year's We all know, for It was an anomaly, but, yeah, he came into this team. In the winter of 2019. I I believe talked to him. Very, very nice guy. Newest track record, but he was somebody they were counting on heavily. So you think Daily Daily own could wind up in the rotation? I well, the way that the rotation looks right now, certainly if if you could take Eric Jaeger's at his word, and there's no reason not to, uh, daily own is a very personable guy. If you said any smart S so I would think that with that that type of talent, you know the what he's added with the Reds pitching program. I think he's an outstanding of No rotations possibility. You know Jeff Hoffman, who they just got, you know, is a bullpen arm. Hey, just a few years ago, maybe 34 years ago, he was ranked as one of the top prospects in the rocky system ahead of guys. Maybe three guys who were in the rotation last year. No, it's another change of scenery thing that hey, you know, let's fix this. Let's see what he can do. He's still fairly young, You know, maybe even the lefty Perez kid that they just got from the Astros throws in the in the mid nineties from the left side, the red have a lot of promise with pitching now. I hope so, because that would take Mike Lorenzen out of the conversation for the rotation. I think they with Iglesias gone, They think it's almost a must that Lorenzen is in the back end of that bullpen. Would you agree? Well, I don't know if it is a must can. I think he may be a better fit to for more of a long roll because he can can go length. I think that you know, I'm your garret. I think you should be a solid closer look at them as listeners know. Really stepped up this year. He has great stuff, so I think those two can handle the back of the bullpen. Well, I hope so. The other glaring need for this team is shortstop Jose Garcia played a little bit here last year. But I mean, he had 68 parents is in with 26 times and again, you know 2020 was an anomaly. He's never played to any great degree. Above advanced able there. Three guys that are out there. They're all going to be expensive. Marcus Simeon, d d Gregorius Andrelton Simmons. They're all expensive. Particularly and whose war is nuts. It Z closing in on nine. I mean, they almost have to do something dramatic at that position, don't they? Well, they certainly have to do something. Gregorius is the guy in that bunch I probably would not want because he's left handed, and the red seemed have maybe too many left handed hitters right now. You know Simmons to me now that he is a little bit older. I think we're basically looking at Jose Iglesias. A Zafar is what he would do on both sides of the ball Sammy and would be the most expensive but the best fit if Red's ownership besides that, they want to spend money. Yeah, I have. Ah! When? When Theo Epstein left the Cubs. Not too long ago, Dick Williams was the first person who came to mind. I thought to myself. Did both of these guys step away because they were told by ownership. We're going to go backwards. And with the red. It was right at a time where Dick Williams had built a team that's a legitimate contender. So it would be a shame for this ball club in the fans. If they do suddenly decide well, here's a good excuse with the pandemic that we're not going to spend money. You know, it would be because last year was even though It was an aborted season and the team didn't hit. Well. It was excitement. You couldn't go to the games, their television ratings here in Cincinnati with through the roof semi, and I I like the guy. He did not have a good 20. 2020. But you know in in, I think he I think he had He had 2592 r B I and his last full year in 2019. And I hear you about Gregorius batting from the left hand side. I don't know if there's enough equity left for him on this team. I know it was really regarded highly when they made that trade that All those years ago that brought to here to the to the Reds. Simmons is interesting. Just because of his defense. He acquits himself, okay with the glove, But every one of these guys, Dave, they're making 13 14 $15 million and I don't think they're going to get it anywhere. But I don't see the reds even approaching that for a short stuff to you. Well, that I don't know what they're going to do..

"Wanted Go See Willy Mays vomited buy tickets for three games. Syria's that want to see me because he knew he knew in a three game series. You can put up some serious numbers, saying That's great stuff that that really is, and then just away carried himself. You know this grace dignity and he was just nobility. Big time. Yeah, he was. He was baseball, royalty and Think about it. Check. There's gonna be a lot of empty seats in Cooperstown. Hopefully they'll get they have the ceremony this year, But my gosh between you know Morgan and Fever and Brock and Gibson and Teii line and Waiting Ford. Then this group of the sort of goes sudden goes and now the biggest of them all, Henry goes. It's just It's kind of a little too much to absorb it. Fear of baseball fan like you when you're absolutely right. As soon as I posted something on Facebook yesterday, saying, I haven't been this sad in a long time. My attorney friend up in Mason. Huh? Chris Watkins wrote. You know, a little piece of us died today. And it said, there's no doubt that that's how I think we all who are sports fans kind of age ourselves by our Baseball heroes going and you know, you got blessed. My father was 97. I'm up here and nor New York taking care of him. He said he felt like he lost a member of the family. When when you will get bear died, and I feel like I lost a member family when show Morgan died because I was pretty close to Joe and I have got Tonto. Pleasure of doing a piece Send off Peace and Joe for Life magazine found a newsstand now, along with the other five Great Hall of Famers who passed in 2020 and man, They just told me they don't make them like that anymore. I don't care what anybody says. And Morgan was like Henry in that sense of the class in the dignity and the nobility and just was a great pioneer in a great representative representative of his race, and and and and for baseball, So I I admire all these guys and it zipped tough hit one of my greatest thrills. And honors was being the emcee at the Miramonte High School's Warrior fund raiser Stag. In in Oakley and I got to introduce and sit and have dinner with Joe Morgan. This was like years ago. Yeah, and gosh, just just awesome. And so I introduced him by saying He's not only the greatest living second baseman the greatest second baseman who has ever lived and I got a note in the mail from from the A D at Miramonte saying, Jill really, really like that and appreciate it. If you didn't say anything unless he really you know means that man, So yeah, What a threat. He's an amazing guy because he would do events like that. And I remember Hearing this story. I wasn't a part of it, but I think when he first came to the Reds, there was like a caravan like they do. Only there was one bus and said it three and Joe was out and happen to fall asleep in a snowstorm. They wake up like 10 hours later in West Virginia, and they introduced Joey says, Man, I gotta tell you heard about risk country being really strong with baseball fans. Are you kidding me? Do you fancy coming from 12 hours away through a blazer to see his place? So Yeah, he was. He was an amazing guy. And what? I just love that location of the statue that Tom to she did it right. The corner. The big corn next, a great American ballpark. What a great Welcome for out of town fans and even his hometown to come to see the ball club play and have Joe be the first guy that come across him on the great former Reds. Yes. Hey, I was checking out Twitter yesterday and sports writer called Davey Johnson. It to get a comment, and he said that he that he loved him, he says, but I, but I can't talk right now. He's being treated for Cove. It J. B. Johnson. So What Just said. You know, he loved him, and they're very close. And yeah, just heartbreaking toe lose. Ah, legend like like Hank Aaron. Yup, There's no down here again. Well, let's just give thanks that we got to see him play he played was a little bit before my time is yours. But such a long career he was still playing when we were breaking in his sports writer. So it that does your great career he had and from those those those 20 whoever was 55 to 73. I heard today that is worst season was like a 4.3 war into 20. You know, three year period, I thought, my gosh, these guys off here was better than most all stars. Best year, So Yeah, he was one of a kind. And I mean, let's face it, chick the Giants don't walk the earth anymore. Like Henry Aaron. You're right. And he was He was good young and old. Yes, Yes, it's just Yeah, Just just phenomenal. And you have no question 3016 hits without the home runs that zombie like me away my favorite state of all. Yeah, And my nobody put up on my Facebook page yesterday said you know, too. To paraphrase Bum Phillips. I don't know what class Hank Aaron's in, but it don't take long to call the roll. Right. That's true. I mean, think about he led the league in total bases eight times. I don't think anybody's done that, including Bonds, Ruth You know Williams hey was just in a class of his own, and I think that's what you have to say about him is that I think I read a quote from, uh, chipper with their former Braves and I thought to myself, he said. You know, there's all star teams, and there's all galactic teams and Henry Aaron's starving all galactic team so that that set set it all for me. No doubt. He kept that box under his You know what? His locker of the hate mail that he received? Can you? Um alter pressure the pressure that he went through chasing Babe Ruth? It's just you can't fathom it. No, I've read. I've read a half dozen of those hate mail help A mail letters today and It was bad or worse than anything. Jackie Robinson got hand. I thought myself it open it. New I guess inside to me for Henry because you talk about nobility and royalty and all that, but to do it under duress like that, for the record, he really He knew he had to have that record to become one of the absolute all time so he pursued him, But he really didn't want it. He didn't want to eclipse the great Bambino. But I mean, if you got a chance, you're gonna go for it, and he did it would complete Grace and it it just shows in this case how the people who were criticizing of him criticizing him. They were much less human being that he was so that tells you all you need to know you had Gosha quote. Unbelievable. I don't want them to forget Ruth. I just want them to remember me and Wow, it's just Yeah. And before I let you go, John Erard and I really appreciate your time tonight. How bad you know, just from an economic standpoint from a psychological standpoint. God, we need baseball back bad. We do we do. And I have to say, chick that you know the rest of the visions not really going after it. So I think 86 wins could actually win the division and the rest can make Running down to me the most exciting thing about this offseason. I guarantee you, man, they're gonna wind up with one of these three short stops. That's out there wouldn't be d d Gregorius or Andrelton Simmons or Market Simi and they're gonna have a real really good shortstop for nine or 10 million bucks..

"Twitter question for this hour was was dealing with the red shortstop Pursuit, which fridge and shortstop would you prefer for the Reds Right now? 56% say, d d Gregorius 34% say Marcus Simeon and 10% say Andrelton Simmons that on Twitter at Lance McAllister, thanks to barley corns, three locations. In northern Kentucky for presenting the Twitter feed. And I have a bank of lines open. 5137491 7800 the big £1.700 on a TNT for you to weigh in on the shortstop conversation. Speaking of which, when D D Gregorius joined me Tell me about a month or so ago, We talked about a variety of issues, and, of course, freed and see was first and foremost for trying to figure out what was on his mind. At that point, I talked to him about the process What he's looking for. In his memories of the Reds. Here's the former Could he be future again? Red shortstop Didi Gregorius. You are a free agent. What will go into your decision on where ultimately you play baseball in 2021. Let's say Something that they're a good team and a team that wants to win. So I think that's what I'm shooting for. You played for David Bell when you were in the red system. Did you enjoy your time in the red system? You you were signed when you were 17? You are a youngster. Then what did you think of your time in the Reds organization? I had a really great time when I was there. You know what? They were the first team to give you the opportunity to come to the stage and play so You know, I always thank them for that and described that time against local. So I mean, I had a really great time playing, got to know a lot of people and had a really good managers, any coaches and coaches, So I mean, and that they helped me a lot to improve my game T o till today, you know, so I talked to some of them toe. No. You always need that little reminder What to do to keep staying on their good fat? Did he take me back September 9th 2000 and 12. What do you remember about your mate? Your first major league hit? Whatever you know, I know it was the infield hit. Sure, ground really short and in the hole. That was when I had a little bit of speed. You're in the starting lineup and your bad in between Brandon Phillips and Joey Votto. What? What? What was that experience like it as a major leaguer for the first time. You know, it's funny, You know, I always joked around with Brandon. You know, he talked a lot and We kind of tell always told that I have fun and play the game the right way. You know, soon as I said in 2011 when I was in a big league camp, so hey, helped me a lot. Coming up, and I talked to vital a little, but he doesn't talk that much. But I talked to him a little bit, but it's always good to know T here everybody's story and how they got there and all that stuff, so that's always a really good stuff. You know, because you're a free agent. I have to ask. Are you open to possibly coming home to play for the Reds? I'm open to listen to anything. That's the thing. So anything that's good. And that game Dr. Been trying to do everything? Yeah. I mean, I listen and see what they have to offer. Have dollar talk so ever known. Have they shown any interest in you either to you or to your agent to this point. To the agency. I think they talked a little bit. If I could be a go between in the negotiation, just let me know. DD, all right. Didi Gregorius when he joined the last month, talking about his future, he is, um he's being pursued by multiple teams. The report from Jim Boulden yesterday was The Reds had expressed interest in Marcus Simeon. As DD mentioned back then the Reds had had contact or at least conversations with his agent. From that standpoint, the Reds have not been tied to a least I have not seen many reports of them tied to our interest in one Andrelton Simmons. We know this. They need a shortstop. I would think DeeDee and the other the other than the factory about DD he was coming off of Tommy John surgery, so I think it's fair to say although he'll be 31 in February. I would think another year removed from the Tommy John surgery. Now, as I say that I don't remember if it was his throwing arm or not. Now, I think about it, but you would think it least he would be more comfortable one more year removed from that surgery. Um He's a guy who makes contact. He's a guy who knows the organization. He's a guy who played for David Bell when he was in the minor leagues, but also keep in mind. They had a crack at him, and he had a crack at them last year at this time, and he chose to side with the Phillies, and by the way, Speaking of the Phillies reports tonight indicate the Phillies are expressing interest with Freddy Galvis. Freddy Galvis was a filly and eventually went to Toronto, then went up with the Reds that the season before so the wheels turn and you would think it's some point. Hopefully, it stops with one of those three. I would say, D. D is the safest I would say. Marcus Simeon is the one with the biggest upside potential, but it's ah A bigger risk because he doesn't make a whole lot of contact, and he's not much of a fielder. And then my fallback is probably Anderson Simmons, who I just did It bugs me that for two years they talked about his ankle. And if he's not the defensive player, he once was that I'm not sure he is much of a help in the mix of one of those three, the other issue Reds related before the top of the hour, I mentioned off the top that Archie Bradley Side today with the Phillies Mark Feist sand of MLB dot com says it's one year six million. Here's what is much as I made the case last night that the Reds need to and much like the Padres did kind of take advantage of the opportunity in the NL Central. How the rest of the division is basically standing down. That the Reds need to take it. It's Prime position more so than any time I could imagine going forward where you're going to have an advantage where nobody else is doing anything to say. You know what? Maybe we hadn't planned on doing much, but if nobody else is doing much, let's do something. It's still it is hard.

"Talking about the Reds and their off season. Certainly, rumors abound. And, you know, I really truth be told, Haven't seen a whole lot of people hitting the panic button on some of these rumors. I think the one that had people the most concerned. Would be the possibility of maybe trading Sonny Gray. I see that as being very unlikely. The other one. That's out there is the possible trade of somebody like a you Hani Oh, Suarez. And You make that move and you're starting to see this pop up more and more. If that's a move that gets made, I think you probably see move stock has moved back to third. And then maybe have the money to go. Maybe maybe you have the money, then to go sign a big name free agent. Short. I mean, Let me let me rephrase this. Perhaps a. D d Gregorius and Andrelton Simmons, Marcus Simeon. Maybe those are the guys that are the free agent short stops ahead. That class. Indeed, Record d D Gregorius is certainly a big name on the former red. Um, he would be very intriguing Simian would be intriguing as well. I do think if they you know, had a choice that, um Garcia needs a little more time in the minor leagues. Hey, was I don't want to say they rushed in the situation was as it is in 2000 and 20. But he was overmatched at the plate and overmatched badly, so we need to refine it there. He needs to get have a better idea plate, not chase balls out of this. I mean, they already throw him strikes. Hey, was striking out so I still think his future is bright, but you need a buffer. You need to stop gap. Until he's ready. You gotta find somebody. Kyle Farmer would probably be that guy as it stands right now, unless you find a way to fill that hole. Let's go to the phones. Erin in Dayton. What's up, Aaron? Hey, how we doing tonight, Guy? Great. So I had a question. I was wondering what you guys like. I think Castano's and show go on locked in. Are we still assuming Nixon's L is like 100% ago for for opening day? Yeah, well, thanks for the phone call I I think so. Yeah. I mean, there's no reason to believe that he wouldn't be the guys long as he's. He's healthy. He will be the starting center field. And I think that your primary outfield, those three guys Okay over weaker any thoughts on the Kathy situation? Well, uh, yeah, thanks for the question. I think you'll appreciate it. I think you'll see that as a platoon. Maybe not a straight platoon. But I think for the most part, you'll see Tucker and they're on a regular basis. It could also come down to pitchers who works best with what pictures? It might be that kind of a situation, But I would I would think it would What may be a 60 40 split their catcher, You know, that's going to be interesting to see it was. It was a platoon situation with Sally and Barnhardt. You've got the lefty righty bad. You still have that lefty righty back with Stevenson being you're right handed bat, but I think Chaka will get primarily most of the duties. I mean, you don't want, you know. Stevenson not to get playing time at all. If there's a D H. Stevenson would be a guy they could be in the designated hitters role, especially if you have a Kyle farmer who's an emergency catcher as well. Um But I think Tucker will get primary most of the time, at least to start right. You mentioned Winker in the outfield. It's a crowded outfield. There's no question about that. Jesse Winker will still play Ah lot. I think if you were to pick a primary outfield Um I still think it's the three I mentioned. I think it's it's show going left since Ellen Center cost Janos and right but they're Winker will play he will get in and how that will all play out. I don't know how David Pill's gonna manage that. Well, if show go is performing like he did at the end of last year, where he was in on base percentage machine. They need a leadoff hitter. That's you know, that's still one of the question. Must we talk about shortstop and who's going to get the playing time in the outfield? Who's gonna lead off is another large question. And that might work to his favorite. And he was the bat that the red for missing all of last season. I mean, at the end, he was the guy that could could Slap a ball down the line. I mean, he was Lakers going, man. He's that August he had last year was off the charts. His numbers took.
