Dr. Andrei Illarionov on the State of the Russian Economy

"Ilarionov, as an economist, you are perhaps the best person to ask regarding the state of the Russian Federation's economy today. We have these sanctions that have been imposed. Now Visa and Mastercard, we have an economy that is a fraction of what it was under the time of the Soviet regime. Can you give us an update of snapshot of what the economy was like in recent years since you stopped advising the Kremlin? How fragile the ruble, how fragile the stock market was, and then your estimation of how it sanctions are impacting Russia in the last 13 days. Some sanctions that have been applied are effective ones, especially the sanctions to freeze assets of the Central Bank. This is probably the most important section that has been applied. So if all countries around the world would follow the same policy, it would have probably the most important impact and more serious impact on the Russian economy and the decision making process in Moscow. But it is only one step should be some other steps, including the isolation financial isolation of all banking system of Russia. With cutting all financial ties with all banking system of Russia right now and also it is necessary to introduce a transportation blockade with cutting off all contacts, all transportation contacts with Russia by air by sea by land, that's important step. But we need to understand that sanctions by themselves and all decisions which is absolutely unnecessary in terms of isolation, Russia, in international organizations, are not enough to stop this aggression.

Dr. Andrei Illarionov Describes Who Vladimir Putin Really Is

"Doctor Larry of you've worked at the highest levels in the Kremlin in the last few days we've read all kinds of unsubstantiated reports about he's taking drugs he's taking steroids. I see no reason to posit that given the fact that he's doing things that are predictable given his statements over the last 21 years. You've worked, you have advised this individual. Can you give us a sense of who Vladimir Putin is and explain why people should not be surprised at the events of the last two weeks? He's very calculated person. He's very persistent person if he takes some particular goal. He's using all possible and impossible resources. And all instruments and technologies and manipulations or whatever, just to get this goal be achieved. So that is why I would not buy any all this stuff about he became crazy in that. He does not understand what's going on now. All his actions are we can see they are absolutely devilish, but they are very persistent in achieving his goals. And given that you advise him, how does he react to advise? Does he listen to others? There was, of course, much made in the last few decades that he had svengali. He had influences like dugan advising him. Does he have his own plan or are there people that he relies upon who he listens to? I have not met any other person who was ready to listen to anyone from any point from any point of view from all political spectrum if he considered that person is knowledgeable professional is if he considers that person as an expert. He listens very carefully and he tries at least it was in time when I was there. So he was trying to get as much as possible information for his purposes.

Who Is Dr. Andrei Illarionov, Former Adviser to Vladimir Putin?

"He is a former economic adviser to Russia's acting prime minister jago gadar, chief economic adviser to Russian prime minister Viktor Chen midin and chief economic adviser to Vladimir Putin, doctor Andre il lardo hilaria. Welcome to America first. Thank you very much. Sebastian for inviting me. You are very, very welcome. You have an illustrious resume. I have three pages worth of your qualifications in front of me. We do not have many people with your prior access inside the Kremlin speaking out on American media regarding the events occurring in Ukraine. So let's start at the beginning. Will you walk us through our millions of listeners and viewers across the country, your background before you came to the United States, your qualifications, you've studied in the UK and Austria at Stanford University. So may I ask you just to introduce yourself to our listeners? I'm going to buy my training and I spent most of my time at The Economist and studying economic policy inviting on economic policy. You mentioned some of the people whom I advise to. For almost a TSI was economic adviser to current Russian president. And that time Russia was able to have a pretty remarkable economic growth that double GDP of the country and GDP per CAPiTA was in ten years. It was a little economic miracle for the Russian economy. But it was everything in the past. Since 2008, after three years after my departure, a Russian economy went into stagnation and seeing them economic growth of Russia was not more than 1% per year on average. So instead of doubling GDP within ten years, it's a kind of 10% growth. So 7 to 8% per year country was growing about 1%. It wasn't 1% per year. Now definitely it's a crisis and the intentions of the Russian leadership and first of all of mister Putin right now is very opposite to what you have demonstrated in your initial slight when Putin was talking about a little bit about democracy, freedom or whatever. It's definitely wrong. It's Putin does not pursue this goals anymore. He's intentions are imperialistic. His intentions are conquering the neighboring country, establishing a new world

"andrei " Discussed on The Science Show

"For unrelated apparently to science but many people suspect the detroit reason is his professional work focusing on bringing back the memory of those who were killed by staal and so there is obvious trend towards stalinism on certain portion both over the society but also clearly it comes from some security forces this kind of people and in this environment the you restrictions and you'll laws are really hindering not only international collaboration but the just the entire scientific prosise nature has written about the law of a procedure that is clear something which is opposed by all scientists in russia lists old real scientists and that is something. I'm definitely going to hurt. The russian scientific arena now in these circumstances think of leave potential of foreign scientists coming to russia or even foreign scientists so fresh and origin going back and forth to work in russia that becomes more dangerous from both ends i think. Return of scientists including the young generation of scientists who were trained outside of russia. The likelihood of their return is less than it used to be. Not only because of economic reasons. We are getting worse but also the clear political unfreedom and here we comes back to this feeling of internal freedom which is so important to a scientist and to any human being something which we don't want to lose and the four the current political processes in russia are extremely dangerous to everyone. They are dangerous but they are dangerous to science itself because russia won't be able to develop science in a 'isolation and without moore denies in society and technology russia will fade from the international scene. The case in point the vaccine putin iq which was developed in russia. It's great achievement. That russia was among the countries which were able to develop sputnik obviously right now. The question is a vaccinate and sufficient amount of population producing sufficient number of high-quality doses. And that's where the challenges lie. "So to undress soccer off who centenary of birth. It is right now. This is from the bbc portrait of the once famous man. He's tall and slightly stooping and looks rather like a father superior of a monastic community. He always chooses his words meticulously and he did so when i asked him. If after all the arrests and trials the human rights movement could survive. He thought it could senior. Actually there s told. Lithuania and human rights movement is already coping with a difficult situation. It is not dying it cannot die. It's already fulfilled the be dusk. It's already changed attitudes throughout the world. It's still the world the truth about the violation of human rights in our country and this cannot be cancelled out it continues. Its work and it's only weapon is obligatory but where i asked lies. The strength of the moment the strength of the democratic movement lies in the fact that it is necessary in the morton divided world. Defense of human rights has become the only ideology capable of uniting people of different world outlooks religions nationalities and social attitudes andrey sakharov in translation distinguished. Professor alexander. kabanov is based to the university of north carolina chapel hill and was one of the instigators of a letter to the journal nature about science in russia. Here he is in. I think his garden reflecting on memories of sakharov. Well many things have been said about soccer of i would share the following personal experience. One of the very important things he did. He is essentially sacrificial enroll consistent saying truth which many other people want to say but they couldn simply because the price for doing that was very high was in fact very important to those who were not speaking up. I do recall how my own father who also was a prominent soviet scientist a member of the ketamine with tremendous respect spoke about soccer of and eluded to the fact that soviet government didn't force russian academy to expel soccer in. I believe that soccer of example was extremely important to people like my father who were not speaking up themselves who served some different role in the society but the example of soccer of can't them saying in the otherwise totalitarian society and help them to fulfill some other important mission that they fulfilled in life and the fact that he spoke with me about soccer of was also very important because i saw the respect he was expressing and when i grew up and perestroika started i started asking myself what make people different. What did we gain and would do we lose. And i was comparing to example of soccer of myself. I wrote an essay in which i was analyzing what makes me different from the previous generations. And i concluded that the feeling of internal freedom was extremely important and essentially will work gaining. This is internal freedom at the time when soccer was returned from gorky to moscow and once acquired this internal freedom. I never wanted to lose it. It is intrinsically important for scientists to tell truth because truth and actually knowledge is the basis of the scientists profession as well as some other professions and it is very difficult for his scientists to exist in tila state. Were the untruth and lies are just part of life and it's dangerous to speak up so it really crushes personality unless you have someone like suffer of who really help the entire group of until agenda to keep the sanity. They looked at his example and they were really bringing full forwards some of the ideas and some of the deeds which helped scientists in general and the society at large to survive. I asked him next about himself. Did he agree that his position. As an academician and nobel peace prize winner gave him a certain immunity that it's just having s jimmy needs to guest. Usually just she's to yes. I do if you compare me with. Those unknown are little known people especially those who leave in the provinces far from moscow who carry on the struggle on a one to one basis. Then i do agree but if you look at it from the point of view of generally accepted democratic norms. Then i don't agree i'm not protected. No what are those who are near and dear to me from slander from the willful and petty tyranny of their authorities from constant civilians interference with postal and telephone communications and much else. That makes life ex through and difficult. What will happen in the future. I simply don't know soccer off in translation. Now here's a coincidence. This year marks not only the centenary of under soccer off but thirty years since the end of the cold war and the fall of the ussr. So what's the state of russian research now. According to sasha coming off and the journal nature right now as international relations should become worse and worse with the signs of that are very troublesome for a russian science in general such as political repressions have been in right now in russia of increasing and amazing magnitude and in this situation. Some of their repressions are clearly targeting. Scientists so so mania scientists are accused of treason and number of scientists are getting prison terms including some who like historian dmitri of for unrelated apparently to science but many people suspect the detroit reason is his professional work focusing.

"Of the ukrainian language. Although i never picked it up even i can't speak it hearing it brings me a certain comfort. Even when it's coming from one of the world's most notorious serial killers who also happens to be ukrainian on another note. Found the story interesting as well because it covers the time line of my grandparents day in ukraine gave me an opportunity to learn more about what life might have been like for them as well although they spent their teens and early twenty s living in germany upon hearing the story of andrei chikatilo. I got a chance to learn some of the history leading up to his birth. The major thing that stuck out like a sore thumb was the story of major man-made famine that took the lives of millions of people. It was weird because the entire world knows about the holocaust In germany with the murder of six million jews but ten years previous to that was another genocide against ukraine people that potentially doubled adolf hitler's murder totals. The genocide was a man-made famine which became known as the whole damore. Although just note we're going to be saying a lot of words that are foreign to us we will be going through and reading them very slowly. Make fun if you want but shit. They're really hard. And i really wanna do the story injustice by men's pronouncing names and words but it's going to happen one thing i've learned about this podcast also tend to have a slight speech impediment so i'm just basically doing everybody a favor by trying to skip some of these names and places. Just try not to let it be a distraction from the main purpose of the story. Then again when i start telling the story that involves biting off nipples chewing on testicles. You probably won't even notice because of the difficulty. I'm having with pronouncing a lot of the names and places. I subbed them out for pronouns if you want to know specific names places etc. There's a ton of information available on the case online google it. I don't think skipping some of the names we'll take away from the overall.

We can't take one game and, you know, make assumptions about about who is greater. That third period was about as good of a goalie performance. As you can see, I mean, the net was being attacked time and time again, and we just we just couldn't get it in. So I think if we could keep that energy that we saw in the third period for three periods, I think we could do it. But we also need Vasi t make some some serious saves. Paul. Here's a little trivia question for you. Courtesy of my boy. Todd, right? In 48 playoff starts. How many shut outs has goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy produced for the Tampa Bay Lightning and 48 starts? 10. Andrei Vasilevskiy, who we considered to be one of the best in his position has never Never pitched a shutout in a an NHL playoff game for the Tampa Bay Lightning, which is crazy to me. He's so good, but, man, do we need him to pitch one tonight, right? Yes, sir. I mean, that's like, Todd said in his email to us, John. That's the one position in sports where you can singlehandedly in a team game. Win the game for your team by not letting a gold go buy. Yeah. I mean, what we saw to me is is similar to what we saw with the Lightning and the Islanders in that first game. Just flip flopped. I mean, they were coming off more rest. I mean, we were coming off. So when we receive this phone, we'll do it as I said, and we using the absorb trifle for this audience. So we'll look, of course, we'll read and that's sort of the the best matched physical we can afford is will read how will the implementation of those actions described and sometimes it makes sense right and sometimes you see while it doesn't make sense but will also compare with the date. We see in the observatory for the past three months, and we see was this network implicate in some incidents with them to run to spoof tests will look at the quality of data in IRA- and. Weather's brought to you by. By Howard air. Now. I look at sports it's Paul Calvin see at the desert Ford dealers sports desk was that thirty seven inches since midnight Thursday night. Yeah. In flagstaff is queens. They got almost thirty six inches. Just in one twenty four hour period. And I thought a sixteen game losing streak was ridiculous number. That is actually a franchise all time record low the sons they're now eleven and forty nine they've lost twenty two of the last twenty four and this whole fresh start. They were talking about coming out of the all star break. Yeah. Not so much. They lost to a poor Cleveland team last night one eleven ninety eight and the Andrea was pretty much nonexistent. I mean, Kelly Oubre and Devon Booker a very solid. But once again, the Andrei Aden was not as for the coyotes. They were down one nothing going into the third Vancouver. They scored twice in that third period. They give up the equalizer, but then they go to overtime, and they get the win in OT doggies win again in the playoff push continue. So that is a saw the fighting thunder Dan's, by the way, they get a win. Second in a row. Ninety one fifty eight Cal Baptist. You of ace snaps. It's seven game skid is a beatdown. Somebody's alma mater that is now over the Pac twelve we. We're not naming I'd seen. What's the whole? And then you have the d backs and all boy, they're trying to make everything happen over there with the weather and so forth. Looks like an another day where they're going to be.

"Rocky as a performer, are you still happy with with the so-called music business. You know, it has its ups and downs changes. You know for me man, I have a co following. I don't really have to contribute to like, you know, do things to stay relevant. Hot man. I'm I'm fortunate enough to be one of those individuals like I said earlier, probably like Andrei somebody Frank ocean, a creative to whiz you just do what you do. When when I'm I'm compassionate about it. And I think that kind of like really relate, my fans and my coat. Why why you don't tell us that two thousand nineteen is yours you you would have in eighteen you're the hottest in R&_B in fashion in Susie. Chefs in you know, what I'm saying. Why are you in jail like that? I don't know. Because I think I'd rather just let my work speak for so writing accomplishments was I was in. I'm very humble at this moment, just chilling obscene. It no people come and go, and it's just like I'm just happy to be here. This this is though you say you recently watched our interview with with big now. Drako? He he created, you know, he he actually he gave you a good skin and everything. It wasn't for soldier boy at right? He probably wouldn't be around me why because the same formula, you know, it's almost, you know, just as far as not too far fishes me saying if it wasn't for real I wouldn't be able to do what I do in fashion and navigate from they mistakes. And would not know what I'm saying. Like, I feel like we're soldier, man. He kind made a formula. He's the first to do it and it worked for him. And since then, I think that kind of became the basis of weight or standard way to make it in music hip. Hop industry also through YouTube and with night and just kind of like do it yourself kind of promoting yourself nowadays. That's what everybody's about on your album testing. I feel that you showed very much like you cannot be boxed in when it comes to your style. Where do you see yourself right now? Your place in hip hop. I think what I love about me is is that like even like my Allan prior to that, you know, songs like LSD Lord, pretty flagged with Jodie canal street, excuse me, people didn't give me credit for like two years leaving stuff like that. No trying. Stroke, my ego again, but I think I'm ahead of mine sometimes conflict, you know, what I'm saying when they say don't get ahead of yourself right.

"The two fell head over heels in love within no time they were spending all their time together and having a blast. When they got married on key was worried that Andrei wouldn't have enough family and friends at the wedding after all he'd only been in the Netherlands for a few years, but Andre was the sort of guy who made friends quickly and more than half, their guests were friends of his after the wedding the couple decided to move back to Israel. So that Andrei could fulfil his dream of opening a fencing academy there they were poor and it was a hard life. But some of Andrei students were on track for the Israeli Olympic team and Andrei had long dreamt of the camaraderie and unifying spirit of sports at the Olympics a month before the nineteen seventy two Munich. Olympics on key gave birth to their daughter. The young family didn't want to be a part for the whole month of the Olympics. But neither did on key want Andrei to miss out on his dream. So the family picked up and went to Europe together with uncle taking the baby to stay with her parents in the Netherlands before going to meet Andre in Munich the apartments in the Olympic village were single gender. So the Spitzer's got a cheap hotel room nearby where they stayed together. Most of the time even when Ocoee did come to the village security was lax enough that she didn't have any trouble getting in the couple spent most of their time, exploring Munich and revelling in the Olympic spirit. Andre couldn't believe he was finally here. One day he spotted a bunch of Lebanese athletes and went over to say hi to spite on Ke's concern, he introduced himself as Israeli and asked how they're events had gone. The Lebanese were equally. Happy to chat with him. And they traded stories of their Olympic experiences before parting ways returning to his wife. Andre couldn't stop grinning, saying, quote, this is what I was dreaming about for ondre. The Olympics were all about helping people come together through sport building relationships separate from politics and world affairs after the Israeli fencing team finished their events. Andre got permission from the Israeli delegations officials to go with Ongky back to the Netherlands for a few days to see their baby daughter. He just had to be back for September fifth on September four though Andrei missed his train the baby had been ill and in the hospital, and he just wanted to give her one more kiss. But the trip to the hospital made him too late to make the train. Andre wasn't worried. He would just go back to Munich the next day. But on key was panicked that he would get in trouble for not. Getting back in time. So she insisted upon driving thirty miles to another train station where he was able to make another train. He jumped on the train without a ticket as it was leaving the station and promised to call on key as soon as he arrived in Munich. He arrived back at the Olympic village around midnight to find it empty. He didn't realize that the others had gone out for the evening. He called on key. And they talked until he ran out of coins. But he promised to call again in the morning. After the break. We'll explore the night of the attack. How do you heard?
