Avalanche dethrone Lightning to win Stanley Cup for 3rd time
"Nathan McKinnon nets one and assists in the game winner as the Colorado avalanche defeat the Tampa Bay lightning two one to win their first Stanley Cup championship since 2001 Kale mccart was awarded the Khan smythe trophy for the most valuable player of the playoffs Throughout this whole whole game environmentality was just when that period and when the next one get the next shift and so on and we're never looking too far ahead to the outcome and we definitely we definitely feel like we earned that one for sure Lightning captain Steven stamkos broke the ice early but that was the last Tampa Bay would score McKinnon found a crack at Andre vasilevsky's right side to tie the game at one 54 the second then fed arturi lechon who would give Colorado the lead midway through the game and Darcy Kemper stopped 22 shots to earn the series clinching win Walter marsicano

"Hockey hair. It's the modern day mullet, I guess, 'cause back in the day, hockey hair was an actual mullet. Now it's like kind of a cooler version. It's like The Rock and roll long hair, right? Or like the wrestler sting long hair when he was cool. You must think first had like spiked here, then became like the guy that was kind of like wearing all black and leather and he had the long hair. That's like the new hockey hair. But I love the names of the awards. It's not just the MVP award, right? It's the heart trophy. The vezina trophy, the Norris. Calder trophy. Norris. Exactly. It's so like Jack Adams, right? It's very British sounding, right? Oh, you take home the Jack Adams award in the vezina. You know, it's awesome. I love it. The president's cup. It's not, I just had the best record in the league. Whoop do you do? It's no, you get the president's cup. I love it. You know, I'm a hockey guy. I really am. Maybe it's 'cause I'm an east coast guy, I don't know, but I do like hockey. Who's your favorite team? I'm a ranger fan. I'm happy with the direction of my team because the rebuild has gone much quicker than anticipated. They went further than everybody thought. When you have the best goalie, it's going to happen. And he's still only 25, 26 years old, just one of vezina. And he's going to be there for ten years. So, you know, you think they could win in ten years with Igor shishkin. But, you know, tonight's going to be interesting because it's game 5, it's in Colorado. You never want to count out the Tampa Bay lightning. They are down three games to one. But you don't want to count them out. They did lose the first two games of the series in Denver, although game two is much closer. It was a four to three, I think four to three game one O 7 nothing game two, but there are two time defending champions. And you start to wonder, you know, the rangers gave Tampa Bay a run for their money and it was a 6 game series, but every game was brutal, every game really kind of came down to the wire, there was over times. I mean, it was, it wasn't intense series. And the rangers, I think, kind of ran out of steam because they had played 7 games series prior, right? With Pittsburgh and Carolina, whatever. Yeah. You just can't do that. You can't take you serious to 7 each round. I think they play 20 games in 40 games and 40 days or something. Way too much on your way too much on your body. And I think Tampa Bay in a 6 game series of the rangers remember they had first swept out the flaw to Panthers, the series before, and they started off flat against the rangers, but then I think the rangers kind of worked them for 6 games, meanwhile, Edmonton, Colorado swept that Edmonton in four games. So they were the more well rested team heading into the Stanley Cup final. And I think it's showing, you know, your laboring at this point you've played over a hundred games, right? Or right around a hundred games, you've got to be laboring. And any other time if you told me, am I gonna take Darcy Kemper and goal, or am I gonna take Andre vasilevsky, you would clearly say vasilevsky is a better goalie. But vasilevskiy looks winded. I mean, he does not look like the superstar goalie is. If you go around the league and say, who's the best goalie in hockey, they're not gonna say hysteric in because he's only done it really for this year. And he showed flashes the year before. You're going to say Andrei vasilevskiy is the best goalie in hockey. Well, he's won two straight Stanley Cup, so he's a good answer. But he's not playing great hockey right now. In fact, he's not really out playing Darcy Kemper. And Darcy Kemper is not in the same class as Andre best levski. But it doesn't matter, because I think when you're playing a brutal sport like hockey and people kind of forget, the average shift time when a guy's on the ice is under two minutes, a minute and a half minute. 45 seconds. 45 seconds to a minute. Yeah, sometimes even less. So, the reality is, these guys go out there and they exert unbelievable amounts of energy going up and down the ice. Stopping on a dime, getting right back to full speed, stopping on a dime. Well, Colorado. Colorado is so good that they've got so much team speed. They roll four lines at you. They do. They do. Kadri goes out comes in scores of winning goal, you know? That's why they're saying. They roll four lines. They're so good. They're so deep. Yeah. But again, again, Tampa's really good too. I mean, look at the star power on Tampa. You know, Victor hedman is a Hall of Fame caliber player. You know, Steven stamkos will be a Hall of Fame 500 gold, 600 gold score when it's all said and done. Kucherov is a stud. Braden point's been banged up. He's a really good player. Right? Andre pallett, Palazzo good player. There's a lot of time. There's so much talent between these two teams right now. It's unbelievable, right? You look at two best teams. They're the two best. Clearly, the two best teams in the NHL. You could actually watch this and say to yourself, you are watching the two best teams in the league. No one snuck in that wasn't deserving. Look, if the rangers had one, you could say, hey, a lot of talent on that team hats off to them, right? But in terms of who actually are the two best teams in hockey, you're watching them right now. Star power for both teams just absolute studs and great players. And that's why they're both there. Look, Tampa Bay.

"It's like exactly what Tampa Bay is going to need to do to Colorado skaters to try to slow them down in that way and they do it in a much more sort of conventional physicality way. Like they're not like they have certainly players like sorelli and Platt that can cause havoc with their sticks. But they're going to try to lean on Colorado much more in this series. And so that kind of push and pull between these two teams is going to be so incredible to watch for me where. I'm not sure how it's going to play out throughout the series. I think we might be treated to at least one or two kind of more open fast based games, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if we see a couple of really kind of grinded out very little traction because it's so tight checking between the two and like we talked about maybe in past years that would have scared Colorado off and maybe it still should because no one plays better in those settings than Tampa Bay does, but they see much more well equipped to handle it and take it and stride this postseason they have in the past. Yeah, the reality is the avalanche if they're going to win the Stanley Cup they're going to have to win at least a game or two. Playing Tampa Bay way. They're going to have to beat them at their own game. These two teams are both just too good to not impose their will on any of the games. The ads are definitely going to get a game or two where it's a lot more open ice and up and down. And they have to capitalize on that. They have to they have to get pucks past Andre bachelorette. That's really like they're greatest challenge here. All the style stuff, all the other stuff is at the end of all of that is Andre vasilevsky, the final boss of the final boss. He's like, when you beat the final boss and then he mutates into a third thing. And he gets a you know, he has bars. That's fascia. He's that guy. He's their final form. He is, but you saw you saw him on the first two games against the rangers, like a lot of people were talking it up to rust and had been offer 8 or 9 days or whatever. I thought that was totally bogus. New York had a game plan and executed it, right? Like they were doing so many crossing passes, getting all these one timers were there forcing baskets to move laterally. And then they were beating them with like perfect like Panera and has been a dad pick top corner. And then you see all these stats about how siles, these vulnerable high blocker side and it's like, yeah, every single goalie if you hit the perfect shot top corner is gonna be that's gonna be their most vulnerable position. And Tampa Bay got back to what makes them special, which is shutting the game down after that, right? And so vasilevsky's an unbelievable goalie. His athleticism is unlike anything I've ever seen..
Stamkos scores twice, Lightning beat Rangers 2-1 in Game 6
"The rangers have been eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs with their fourth straight loss two to one to the lightning The blue shirts didn't win after beating Tampa Bay in the first two games of the Eastern Conference final Frankfurt Toronto tied it for the rangers on a power play goal with 6 53 left in regulation but it took just 21 seconds before Steven stamkos restored the lightning's lead with his second goal of the night and 9th of the postseason Igor shishkin made 29 saves for the rangers who were seeking their first birth in the cup finals since 2014 New York put just 21 shots on Andre vasilevsky I'm Dave
Colton scores late, Lightning beat Panthers 2-1 in Game 2
"Ross Colton scored with just 3.8 seconds left in regulation giving the lightning a two one victory and a two games to none lead in their second round series with the Panthers Tampa Bay had just killed off a penalty to Steven stamkos when Colton scored right in front of Sergey barsky the penalty kill also left Florida zero for 25 on the power play this postseason The bolt scored on their first power play chances Corey Perry deflected a shot pass for Broadsky It remained one zero until a two Lewis star and then beat Andre vasilevsky with one 53 remaining in the second period Game three is Saturday in Tampa I'm Dave

"Impressive when you think about the fact that they're playing so many games but these guys haven't slowed down offensively No they are their big men literally Both offensively and just the way they play They are two big men who can wait around and play any if a game gets rough if it's a straight straightforward straight line kind of game Legal so the front of the net Brock Nelson is terrific two way center by a lot of respect for both of these guys And so yeah Nelson's 37 excuse me 30 goals He's got he's gone from 20 to 30 in 11 games So yeah are they these two guys hot Absolutely But yeah it's the other guys like barz more of a passer than a gold score but they need more than him parisi Josh Bailey Bo villi Those two guys Bailey and beauvillier in the playoffs the last couple of years I look at those guys as the wow factor where they can put the islanders over the top or not And their numbers are down a little bit So you know we'll see where that goes the rest of the year But unfortunately for them and for their fans yeah their chances of making the playoffs are pretty much nil It'll be Andre vasilevsky getting the start today for the lightning and the net to our right lightning skate right to left in the first and their road white uniforms with blue numbers and Ilya siroc and gets the start for the islanders Now like Brian mentioned varlamov has had a less impressive season than siroc and var Llama also mistimed with injury and he was out with COVID as well But this is the 15th straight game that Barry trots has alternated his goalies So each guy is basically getting the same amount of time during this busy stretch for the islanders and their season Sorokin gets to start today in the goal to our left aisles move left to right in the first they're wearing their third jerseys blue with orange numbers and white shoulders Referees today Francois saint Laurent and Jake Brent the linesman our mark schuch and Scott cherry the lightning seizes presented by advent healthy official health and wellness partner of the Tampa Bay lightning Meeting two of three between the lightning and islanders the first ever game the light.

"And two rounds, 5 tucks. For a depth guy, that was a pretty good, that was my undercover pick, and I think he got moved for a fourth rounder. So, but as far as Dallas is concerned, I would much rather see than getting healthy Vegas golden knights than watch the Dallas stars Boris to death all the way to a Cup final and the right, right? So it'll be the two wild card teams. I guess it could be Edmonton Nashville Vegas. I think hunter Dallas, LA kings end up being a wild card. Well, you don't think they finished all four? Absolutely not. Because they've played more games than the other top two teams in that division. Yep, that's correct. Okay, so yeah, I don't know. I think LA, I don't know, that's tough because Vegas is struggling, man. They are not a great team right now. They have so many injuries. But I really want Vegas to get it. I'm with you. We need the golden knife. If they trade for IQ, and they don't get into it. I think with their healthy roster that there's no denying that's a playoff team. They've just been, they've been the worst riddle team with their top guys being injured. So look out for the golden knights. We'll keep an eye on them. Carolina added max domi. It was a three way trade with Columbus in Florida, but he was the main player there. Max told me for prospects basically. They also extended yes Barry cotton. He is average annual annual valuable .82 mil. But max domi traded trader once again, he can add an element to Carolina. You can never have too much scoring in the playoffs. On ESPN mentioned, I don't really know where he fits in. He said, max told me he's a good player. I tried working with him. It did not work out. It seems like he's been in a lot of different places, so I don't know if he's not happy with Rosie has or coaches aren't happy with his play, but he continues to move around while having a bunch of skill and the ability to kind of produce offensively, but this is kind of another stuff from. I don't know where he will fit in in that lineup, but obviously Caroline is knocking a ruffle any feathers in that locker room or change any of the dynamic they have unless they believe that he could really help that team out. Oh, we interviewed Jordan Martin nook. They're a north south team. That's how they want to play. If he wants to maybe fit in the bottom 6 where he's a crash or in a banger, you know, playing a physical game, getting to the net, making hard plays, yeah, he could fit in, but yeah, I was surprised to not see them make a big splash. Yeah, I was too. They kind of sat quiet. And there was a player I think everyone said that they were involved in shoot. I don't know. Somebody was mentioning it earlier, but they didn't get them. I don't remember who it is. It's slipping my mind right now. But they are happy with their roster. They're happy with their D, I know that and their goaltending has been sick with Anderson finally getting on a Toronto and probably feeling a little bit more relaxed at the rink. But yeah, I thought they would add a little bit more. I did. Tampa, defend the champs. They loaded up a little bit as well. They added Brandon Hagel. They got him from Chicago, as well as a fourth and 22 and a fourth and 24. For Boris ketchup, Taylor radish and he first in 23 and a first and 24. So Coleman two lightning mortgage in the two more years with haggle at a $1.5 million cap hit. And people keep going back to the quote that stamkos said about them leveraging the future to win now. I don't even, I don't even look at it like that. That's just a great trade. You give up too late first round picks. You're telling me one is going to end up playing to level of which Hegel can add to their lineup. I don't think so. And when you look back and grinnel, you sent the text or the original tweet to the group chat at the time that Coleman got traded he had 21 goals in 2019, 2020 season when he came from the New Jersey Devils. I think they gave up a little bit less than what they did now, but you add on the extra year at a low cap it. And I believe at the time Coleman was a $1.8 million cap hit and he had one year remaining. So he ends up winning back to back with the Tampa Bay lightning. I look at that as the exact same type of trade in the fact that haggle might even end up on their top 6. He's only 23. And he's 23 years old. And people also said he's got, you know, he's not one dimensional either. Like he's got some sandpaper, he'll finish his hits. He can do a lot of different things. And I look at brisebois, man. He is a fucking genius, and I didn't even, I didn't really even know much about Hegel, hadn't paid attention to him until this they made the trade. And then I looked more into it. I think this could be the guy that gets him over the edge. And then they ended up adding Paul as well. I said on sportsnet, I don't really spend much time watching the Ottawa senators. I believe a career high in goals so far this season with 11 so far. He's probably going to be their third line center. They keep that fourth line together of maroon, forget who the guy is. Perry. And Pierre Edward belmar, belmar, that's the one. So now so you'll mention, okay, they lose Coleman. They lose goudreau, and they lose gourd. Well, now you're bringing Paul, who kind of reminds me of goudreau. I don't know if he's as tough, but I think he's still willing. Hegel's a very similar player, just like you just mentioned all the numbers to Coleman. And then Ross Colton is awesome. Yeah. So he's kind of your gourd. And then I know that that fourth line has been there and Perry's obviously had this great year. He's at what, 12 goals right around there on the fourth line, playing power play. Maroon does his thing in the playoffs, tough to move. He could very well be a guy who's a healthy scratch in the playoffs. If every guy that we talked about ends up being healthy going in. Tampa is right there to get a three peat, and nobody has three peated in over what, 45 years. The island is in the early 80s. So they're looking and that's why stamkos is quote, did we say it yet? No. Stamp goes back in February, pal Chris Johnson retweeted yesterday, believe, was it's easy for us to dismiss draft picks because we're probably not going to be around when they come through. We want to win right now for GM Julian breeze blot to be able to put all the chips, put the chips all in and get rewarded. It has been pretty amazing. I mean, guys, as a player, that's what you want. I mean, look at this team. It's unbelievable. They lost that third line and now I'm looking at left wing lock, which is a great website. You can see every team's lineup for each practice each game. And it's just Colton Hegel and Paul on the third line. It's like they are replacing exactly what they lost, and they still have those top 6 forwards that can play with any top 6 in the league. So right now, if you're looking at Tampa, Colorado, I don't think anyone would be that surprised at a possible Cup final of those two teams. And what a battle it would be. And then when you just look at the D with headman and mcdonagh and the size of surname, but gaussians played real well, circuitry, it is such a good hockey team that is going to be right there with the best goal in the world. I argued Avery about this. Yes, your story is going to win the best this year. He could even win the MVP. No one in their right mind would choose to have him over Andre vasilevsky. I'm sorry rangers fans. I'm not saying Shi sterkin couldn't turn into the guy vascular ski is. He has two straight cups. He has a vesna. He will win another one, I'm sure, and he's the best in the world. Until you lose back to back playoff games, you're the best in the world. It's crazy. Avery's on waivers. For that nip to pick up Nick Paul's model, they traded Matthew Joseph in a fourth and 24, by the way. And they also picked up Riley Nash. This is a little another depth guy..

"Rangers And again if you're just joining us right now Andre vasilevsky Eric chernock and Anthony cerelli return to the lineup of this afternoon also our Tammy Panera out for the rangers as he enters COVID protocol All right John Cooper spoke to the media after the game Friday night Here is that interview on landing radio You challenge your team and then you see what they have And tonight wasn't about wins and losses It was about attitude It was about compete level Excuse me and I thought it was all there You know what there's some games you play and you leave a two points and you're like we got a little may not deserve both those points and there's some games you feel like you deserve points and you only get one or none and tonight I thought we deserve to We came away with one but wasn't that which was the point it was how are we going to respond And they responded To palace at the Corey Perry keeps finding ways to put himself in good positions to capitalize on chances when you guys have the extra attack or those in game scenarios Ask him in Toronto in a few years when he's given his Hall of Fame speech Yeah how did the whole situation with Brian play out today I know he was out in Brandon there by himself but taken some shots from Derek Was that we were waiting to see how things went Was there some gamesmanship going on kind of how did that play out Well I don't know how to answer that without throwing people under the bus but he was we had to go where his equipment was And we couldn't take the chance that he was going to be here just in case that results of his tests were not where they wanted Where we wanted him to be And in today's day and age everything's timing and it's hard to turn tests around and get results and whatnot And so in the end if you had to take shots and then ice rink that wasn't ours to prep for the game then he had to do that And fortunately we have a rank close by but it's all protocols safety and all those things that come with making sure guys aren't healthy enough to be back They can't be around us and so that was basically what happened Yeah so at what point did you know he was good to go Probably right before he went on the ice Hey John it's probably a weird experience to have a guy come in get a Stanley Cup ring and then go out and face him on the ice I don't know if it's happened very much with you in the last couple of years but was that an enjoyable piece of closure I guess before the game with Barkley and just what he meant to you guys Well it happened with jani recently and actually it's going to happen with Blake here in the week or so It's bittersweet I'll be honest All these players that when you win a cup they got a special place in your heart but goodies especially He came here with not a lot of fanfare I think the trade was criticized by many many people and all he did was come in here and help lead us to two Stanley cups He was instrumental both on the ice and off the ice for us I think he's got a ton of these got lifelong friends on this team and in this organization There's not too many players I've coached in my non dynamic shell in my career that have the heart and gamesmanship that that kid has So you relish those moments I actually just saw him before I walked in here and he was kind of ridden me He's like I'll coop you somehow to find your way into my tribute video I have nothing to do with it but we had a good chuckle about that But extremely happy for him and disappointed we didn't get two points tonight I am But if they were going to get to points away from us and goodie was going to score two I can sleep at night because he meant a world the world to our organization and what he's done and he's seems to be doing that with the rangers And like I said it's a reason big reason why we won because we had these character kids and you know you cheer for him And so just not at 1230 on in two days from now And that shows you heard we talked to Colin about this Colin Stevenson from newsday mean what good row brings Ryan Reeves there are some grit there are some sandpaper scores big goals we saw that on Friday but we saw that when good row was here for the last couple of years for the lightning winning back to back cups Just the tremendous role player and really valuable and that's why the rangers when I'm got them for sure.

"And now he looks good. He's ready to go. He'll take a huge discount. Like, why would you not take that? Because as you said, like, Omar's injury history, swimming's a kid. You took a rasc right here, who is going to probably play when April comes around when the playoffs, playoffs come around, I would imagine rask's games total will sit at around like 20, maybe being like, that's probably being like overzealous, like he's playing like he's probably gonna be like 12 to 13. Maybe 1415. It all depends what like when he signs obviously and if the Olympic break factors into that in some fashion, but yeah, no, you're right. Like, why wouldn't she want that? And this is the part, unless you are driven by spite and you're saying, no, I don't want him because of what happened in 2013 or 2019 or 2000 whatever. It's like, okay, well, that's not a good way to manage a team. You can't manage on spite. You need to put the best product out there. And I have a hard time believing that, you know, the way this rotation works out, again, whether it's swimming, all Mark or rask. If one of those guys is your third string goaltender, you're in a lot better position than pretty much every other team in the NHL. And it's a matter of finding out who is starting in the playoffs. Yeah, but you cross that bridge when you get there. Because I do think that ultimately, I want to believe in this team, but I don't know if this Omar's tandem if it is the tandem, gets you to the playoffs, right? So that's the other part of it as well. But with all Mark, I didn't hate the contract because again, I mean, you look at the numbers last year. He had a better 5 on 5 percentage than Andre vasilevsky and Mark Andre fleury, right? Like he was directly above those guys. For goaltender. So I didn't hate that signing. And they needed a plan, right? They were in on being a win now team. And when you're winning out team, you can't go into it with two rookie gold tenders. It's just impossible. I get it. The idea of all you can save money by doing it. But if they, if they were not ready, that sinks you faster than a bad defense and faster than not having great center depth. Bad goaltending will sink you faster than anything in the world. So I didn't hate the contract at the time. And I think also the other thing at the time was like, as you said, they needed a plan and there weren't a lot of other plans out there. Like I think a lot of people and myself included kind of set at the time, hey, why not just like maybe get like a lock type, you know, to just hold their own in net. And I think that's fair. But looking back, I don't know if there was that person. I mean, because a lot, as much as the soft goals kind of piled up as his time went on here, he still held his own..

"Wild coming up at about 15 minutes next segment We'll talk to Bobby the chief Taylor right now We'll hear from John Cooper He spoke to the media yesterday Andre vasilevsky in the net today Here's the head coach of the lightning on letting radio In your last three games 16 physician players have a point You can't get much more balance in that can you No I didn't know that Well that's how we're winning So we're playing D were trying to keep teams the outside Things break down the goalies there and everybody's chipping in Especially with the guys we have out It's much needed but really solid team effort here especially these last couple games Is it coincidental that those guys are starting to find some scoring because you've lost those guys or is it just a way that things were going I don't know Well first of all these guys are bound to score We went 16 games without scoring You know a lot of these new guys So and getting chances If they weren't getting chances I'd be a little concerned but it's great to see these guys get their first you know your hand and pucks out after games and but we need it We're definitely going to need it and it's a weight off guy's shoulders and but helping us win games Video for Yanni with what do you think of Yeah to be honest I hope the cabin didn't pan to me because my eyes were a little watery to be honest And it's a loud ovation as you're gonna get for visiting player coming in so it showed you what a favorite he was to us but I thought it was a great tribute and I'm sure yani was a train wreck after that because I would have been It was quite a trivia but he deserved it You know bigger name players come through it back and you have maybe more talented guys Come back Why do you think he connected so much with people in advance to where obviously he's such a beloved guy here Well when you win a championship let alone two and very recent And then you look at some of the things he did Game 7 against the islanders the goalie scored And a line that was really an engine for our team with Yanni goody and Coleman he was a big part of that And just the energy they brought to the arena and how scrappy is and just stays in the fight all the time and I think the fans appreciated that and I was clear by what happened today On how pleased were you that the team would be able to keep those emotions at bay and focus on the game and obviously what was happening on the ice Yeah well it helped a little today because we gave Yanni's ring and the whole team stuck around So that shows you right there Usually guys take off after the morning skate everybody's everywhere but we waited till after their skate to stick around for Yanni So that showed you how close we were as a group and what guys started Yanni So I think a lot of that was out of the way today and then see Rick's ceremony was gosh like Hall of Fame It's pretty cool So I'm just glad it was a great night tonight and to get a win also kind of tops it off because a lot of good moments This was a special night When you put the line together with him and radish and you said you know form an identity or find an identity And I was wondering what kind of spark the idea at first to put those guys together and what you kind of envisioned with that Well again game one everything just doesn't roll into place especially after our game one But those guys have come up together I know Colton has been here before those guys were but they're all buddies They all kind of pull for each other We just needed bowl and ratty to get a little bit more comfortable with the game And with the NHL and then Boeing's up getting hurt So he's behind a bit but it helps putting stammer back at center so kind of freed up cold to put him back at center When you get that little chemistry of those guys off the ice you hope it kind of might work on the ice They feel comfortable with each other Belly play there a little bit earlier And it was fine But I think you know the switch putting the vats together and the kids together It's really help Some context you could put on vaso SDK 200 career when in just 318 games Is that good Just rewind the tape of every time you've ever asked me a question about it's getting redundant So he's just a stabilizer And good for him He's 200 wins and was it three 18 It's a pretty good clap right there Pretty good clip indeed and he'll be in again this afternoon and.

"With you Now last week on power lunch heard on lightning power play Dave Michigan and I had on Kevin woodley of ingold magazine He also covers the Canucks for NHL dot com and he's been one of the most respected voices in the game when it comes to covering goal tenders in the NHL We hit on a number of topics in our interview but we wanted to share with you his response to this question on what makes Andre vasilevsky so good I remember doing an article when he first came up reaching out to some of the guys that had worked with him in the summers There's a couple guys that coach that were in Ottawa And one of the things they talked about and actually measuring was his ability to have power from end range of motion So like a lot of goalies can make an explosive push but they have to sort of have that push leg pulled in tight to then use it to push to generate that power You see goalies if they're in their knees and they need to move to their left You see them lift their right knee to get that edge and then push Most goalies need to push that lift that knee fairly significantly to get a powerful push Vasi can be almost fully extended Still maintain control over his edges Like you'll see him on recoveries in a desperation situation where he doesn't need to lift that push leg high He has so much power at end range of motion It's crazy And he also manages to maintain and hold edges from such a wide butterfly that he's not just pushing with the push leg He'll actually use the lead leg He'll still sort of use it to sort of steer and gain rotation into angle for that push So even though he's on his knees he still skating He actually manages to get rotation and power from positions that nobody else in the game Maybe he's just gherkins close but they're the only guys that can sort of move like that when they're on their knees And it allows him to make these incredible saves Just on a far more regular basis but when you really break them down they look desperate but with him there's an element of control that allows him to make more of them more often than frankly anyone else in the game And I think that's something we have seen over the last few years He's been an incredible goaltender his consistency I think is what makes him elite and he gives his team an opportunity to win every game It's one of the reasons why the lightning really don't go into long losing streaks Every once in a while you'll see a really good goaltender struggle a bit It feels like vassy doesn't And that's one of the reasons maybe the biggest reason why the lightning have been able to be one of the best teams year in and year out over the last 5 or 6 years Hey this season when the boats light the lamp at home it means more than the final score For every lightning home goal mosaic once again donate $500 to feeding Tampa Bay and its local food bank partners that equals 5000 meals per goal and for every lightning hat trick at home mosaic will donate $5000 Thank you for helping in the fight against hunger We're gonna hear from John Cooper When we return we're gonna use that for lightning and wild Right here on letting radio On February 26th come join the party at the 2022 navy federal credit union NHL stadium series As the Nashville.

"You know what's interesting and I think we do this with offensive players You know when you watched a city Crosby Connor McDavid maybe even to a lesser extent guys like Steven stamkos Nikita kuchar You can see greatness and dominance every night So you're not surprised when you take a look at their career totals at a certain point in their careers where you say wow those are Hall of Fame worthy But I feel like vasilevsky burns you because of where he is how quickly he got to 200 as you had in your game notes was the second quickest to 200 only surpassed by Ken dryden you really start to take a look back and I say how far can this go We are really watching something unique I think you have to embrace it We don't take him for granted I know the team doesn't And I think that's one of the things that makes a pretty special covering vasilevsky is that I think we are watching greatness and we are watching somebody who I think when it's all said and done assuming he can stay healthy and stay on competitive teams you're going to be talking about a guy who's not only great but maybe one of the best ever Yeah absolutely I mean the numbers that he has right now through you know for first to 200 wins or all of those milestones that come up through the first half of a gold Tinder's playing career I mean he's right up there Pretty much it's him and Ken dryden and every one of those categories for tops and the NHL So yeah if you can continue to play consistently throughout the second half or the middle part or through the second half of his career He should be challenging for one of the all time greats in NHL history And really if you're a lightning fan you have to feel good about you know even before vasil levski was Ben bishop putting up incredible numbers for this team So you go from Ben bishop who really stabilize the goal to be positioned for this lightning franchise and allow them to kind of start this run that they've been on under John Cooper and he transitioned into Andre vasilevsky It's just been lightning fans have been fortunate to have those two net minders and goal for them over the last 8 9 seasons or so Yeah they've gotten elite gold sending And I think that's one of the reasons why they've been able to stay so competitive in an era where there's a ton of parity and it's been fun to watch Burns Lastly this mini two game road trip Minnesota and St. Louis places where Tampa Bay hasn't had a ton of success Is it just one of those weird things in sports where a team struggles on the road in these buildings Or is there something else there that we're not seeing Yeah you know this is really a sneaky two game road trip for the Tampa Bay lightning You look at Minnesota the lightning this is the worst building in the league for the tape of bay lightning They only have two wins all time in Minnesota The last win that they had there came in 2011 So you're talking about some really good Tampa Bay lightning teams that have gone into Minnesota and for whatever reason haven't been able to come out with the victory You know I've been to excel energy center It's a great arena It's one of my favorite rigs on the road It's not necessarily that wow The crowd doesn't get that into the game It's a great crowd but it's really difficult to pinpoint what it is exactly about going into Minnesota that gives the lightning so many issues The Minnesota's always had a pretty decent team but never a great team They're always all in the cusp of making the playoffs kind of that 7th or 8th team in the Western Conference So nothing really that Minnesota's the one is just for whatever reason Tampa Bay doesn't perform that well there And same with St. Louis That's a building where they've always had four all time wins against the blues and St. Louis So these are the two worst venues for the lightning historically to try to come out with the victory So it'll be an interesting to see you know how this lightning team can kind of handle that test in this two game road trip Burns we appreciate buddy We'll do it again on Tuesday All right I'll talk to you then Greg All right that's Brian burns He of course is the beat reporter of the Tampa Bay lightning Coming up next we're gonna hear from Kevin woodley of ingold magazine Now he knows goaltender's like no other Dave Michigan and I had him on our power lunch show last week to discuss Andre vasilevsky You're gonna hear part of that interview when we return We're getting you set for lightning and wild coming up at about 20 minutes on letting radio Directions to outback steakhouse.

"Water playing There's second of two meetings this season and the only meaning excel energy center Tampa Bay Minnesota are playing for the second time in 8 days the lightning defeat of the wild 5 before and a shootout at Emily Rena just one week ago to end a four game losing skid to Minnesota And as we said the XL energy center has always been a tough place for the lightning to win They've lost 8 in a row since the start of the 2011 2012 season But those fortunes may change this afternoon The lighting are playing some really good hockey of late They collected their third win in a row after defeating the Seattle crack in three nothing in the first ever meeting between the two teams Friday and Emily arena And the lighting of now posted a shout out and back to back games and are now ten one and two over the last 13 And you can't go on runs like that if you don't get good goaltending The lighting it seems like are always getting great goaltending on most nights behind Andre vasilevsky He stopped all 17 shots he faced for his second consecutive shutout in 28th of his career Against that game against the kraken And he's posted a shutout in two or more straight games for the 6th time in his career The most by any goaltender since he entered the NHL back in 2014 2015 He also collected his 200th career win and his 318th game on Friday were required the second fewest games by a goaltender in NHL history to reach the 200 win work behind only Ken dryden He's the best goaltender in the game today and he's been that way for a couple years now And he reflected afterwards about getting his 200th win and what it means to him Achievement I'm proud of that but obviously one thing my teammates for that because you know I can win on my own so it's a great team work It is great teamwork and he'll be in the net this afternoon again When you have a player like that you have a tendency sometimes maybe to take him for granted but Ross Colton certainly knows how good he is He's unbelievable he's obviously the best for a reason just his work ethic and practice in the way he carries himself on and off the ice and especially on game day You know he can't be messing with his routine So he follows a strict regimen and he's got to stick to it because obviously it's working So now we count on him and maybe too much sometimes so I think we got to do a better job sometimes to tighten it up because we might get too complacent 'cause we know him He's back there but just all around He's unbelievable And to the lightning's credit over the last couple of years they have been very good defensively but it doesn't hurt when things break down to rely on a guy like vasey as your last line of defense I think you also saw that game against the crack and why the lightning was so tough to be You know they're gonna get a little goaltending but now they're getting some role players to contribute on a pretty regular basis Piero dwarf valmar scored his first goal of the year in the first period It was a beautiful shot from a guy who's played well this year in his role You heard from Ross Colton earlier he scored in the second period of that game He now has points in two of his last four games His line of Taylor radish and Boris kaku has been outstanding recently especially with brayden points and Nikita Kutcher off out of the lineup you need some guys to pick up the slack and they've done just that over the last couple of weeks You can purchase tickets for the lightning foundations 50 50 raffle presented by Moffitt cancer center to help support hundreds of local charities Each home game this season features a single pot with a winner selected during the third period visible 50 50 dot com to purchase tickets do good and win big All right it's time now to bring in our good friend He is the beat reporter of the Tampa Bay lightning He also does the pregame skate show before every home game with Bobby the chief Taylor on news radio WFLA and lightning power play That would be Brian burns Burns he great to be with you again before we get into this mini two game road trip starting with Minnesota today Let's take a look back at what happened in the previous game The lighting continue to accumulate points and specifically Andre vasilevsky continues to pick up wins He just got his 200th career win The other night it came in a shutout and burns you when you take a look at vassy The thing that sticks out for me it's not just how great he is I think we all understand that getting that win against Seattle a couple of nights ago three nothing was indicative of the performances we've seen from him over the years But I think what stands out for me is how consistently great He has been because there aren't too many cases where I can look back and say wait Andre vasilevsky just wasn't on his game and it speaks I think to how consistent he's been and I think that's the hardest thing probably to achieve as an athlete It's funny that you bitten that Greg because after the game against Seattle we talked to vasil levski in the postgame media and he kind of almost apologized to the team for their performances through the first couple of weeks of the season where the lightning were kind of uneven in their play We're giving up a lot more goals and they certainly are now and someone asked fazil us You know what's changed between the last month or so for this team as opposed to the first couple of weeks of the season and he said I was inconsistent in my play in those first couple of starts and really a lot of what the team was giving up in those first two three weeks of the season was because of him He thought I thought you know he was probably not as good as we've seen him but I thought he was fine in his first couple of starts to shiro's more the defense in front of him But you know I think that's just the standard that he sets for himself He expects to be a guy that gives up probably one go or less in his mind each time he goes out there And certainly he's been close to these shutouts He's had a few games this season where he's taking a shutout deep into the third period and then a goal to kind of doesn't really matter as far as the result is concerned has gone against him But we've seen this in the past where he gets one shutout He tends to string together two or 300 in a row and he goes all these long shutout streaks here So if you're in a tape of a lightning you just roll with it as long as he's going to continue to play as well as he has a really for the last month or so He's been at the top of his game Yeah and.
