"Semifinals and Elena were back in her sets up a showdown with Victoria Azarenka. Kim Chris, today is the 25th of January and we are here to catch up. On the Australian open quarterfinals at tennis weekly headquarters, we now have our semifinalist set magdalena of all people is there. We've also got Novak Djokovic who has destroyed another player in the draw this time Andre Rublev whenever will he get to a Grand Slam semifinal and we've got a very tasty showdown between Victoria Azarenka and Elena that is the oldest grandson champion left in the ladies draw and the youngest Grand Slam champion left in the ladies draw. So very tantalizing match up there and guys, we are recording 15 minutes earlier today because Chris, you have explicitly explicitly messaged us on the group because you've got a cinema. You've got a cinema date this evening. I do indeed and I do apologize for the 15 minutes early that you did get here and then I still was not on time. I don't know about you Kim, but I am not I'm not happy about that. I can only assume you're going to watch some RT Danish film with English subtitles. I'm hoping I don't understand anything about it and that's how you can tell it's a good film in Denmark, I think. So I will happily provide a review next time and then maybe that will make up for the minutes that you had to start a bit early on this one. I just hope it's going to be a scandi crime drama bit of scandi noir because that's still I think it's that still popular those sorts of things. I'd like to think they are popular in Denmark, but very popular outside of Denmark, particularly in the home counties. Very popular. And on BBC four rather than on the big screen we see for, yes, of course. Well, we're not here to talk about BBC four. Oh we guys, unfortunately. Unless tennis goes on to BBC four at some point. At the moment, it's kind of on Netflix and discovery and whatnot. But let's talk about the call to finals because we are here to catch up before Chris goes to the cinema to talk about all the quarter final action from Melbourne. Let's start with the men, shall we? I feel like we should maybe just get one particular match out of the way because I mean, it was kind of done and dusted before everything was on the wall before they went out, wasn't it? If this was a film, the plot would be kind of rubbish, I think. And the match we're talking about is Novak Djokovic against Andre Rublev, which was just a bit of a one sided affair to say the least. Joel, do you want to kick us off? And give us your synopsis of the Djokovic Rublev encounter. Yeah, I mean, Joker it's really just picked up. I feel where he left off against Alex de minor, Andre Rublev. I don't think he really did much wrong to be honest. But Djokovic was just on another level and there were no real signs of injury. Yes his leg was taped up, but it didn't really inhibit his movement and yeah, he got the job done very, very, very convincingly, 6 one 6 two 6 four Rublev really kind of felt a bit sorry for him, but powerless, I think, to really kind of do anything. You could see him kind of getting increasingly frustrated as the match went on, and even though he had a few breakpoint opportunities, Djokovic really, I feel just coming into his own at the business end of the tournament. Yeah, he's really gone from strength to strength since the early rounds or we had question marks over his leg. This was just an absolute kind of obliteration. You know, he was I mean, I don't think it was helped by the fact that his opponent as competent and consistent and highly ranked as Rublev is, has never won a grandson called finals, and we were saying before that none of us thought he really had the weapons to sort of really challenge Djokovic. So I think the matchup was just sort of kind of terrible on all fronts for giving us a close encounter. And I was hoping Rublev could do a bit more, but everything he did was just nullified by Djokovic and his defense. With Rublev not having the kind of killer killer weapons, it was, it was really just, I guess, only one outcome, there was arguably more drama with fans and whatnot, wasn't there, Chris, there was some hecklers going on, some flag encounters which didn't go down too well. What did you make of all the sort of off court stuff that was going on, Chris in this match? Well, I think if there was any good intention to it, it was just because Rublev needed to distraction or Novak Djokovic to be distracted. At berk during any of the points, because as you say, it was a bit of a mass destruction in this sense. But you always get kind of at grand slams. You get these sorts of situations and it's always tricky for officials to know what to do. But it's not something everyone is saying and you kind of want to keep the conversation focused on on the tennis because I think we can all agree that with the banning of Russian players at Wimbledon it hasn't necessarily had the positive effect. That kind of Wimbledon was hoping for. So try and keep politics out of tennis would be my preference there. I mean, do you think it was interesting to hear from Victoria Azarenka, which will get on into the second half. Her talking about this need for heroes and villains in tennis and in kind of just general sport narrative in the news and as a result of that feeling that Novak Djokovic is this is this villain and that's why we're seeing some hecklers in the crowd. We've seen more on more than one occasion Djokovic talked to the umpire telling them to kind of hear what they're saying and get security on them, get them out of here. Do you feel like Djokovic is being unfairly kind of painted as a villain and we shouldn't really be kind of looking at it from that kind of standpoint. I think in Azarenka's words, she was like, a lot of people see us as kind of like superheroes. No, we're kind of humans and we just want to go about our kind of day job. Do you feel like it's unfair to see kind of Djokovic get these hecklers when he steps out onto the tennis court? I think it is. Unfair. I mean, if I'm doing my job, I don't want to have people like having a go at me. I want everyone to treat me with respect, regardless of what I may or may not have done or what's going on in the world. So I don't think it's really appropriate, whatever the setting, but Chris maybe you well, maybe you've got a different angle, I don't know. I think it's part of obviously what comes with celebrity is that you are unfortunately opened up to criticism, and I think that the villain sort of aspect of things, I don't think Nadal is necessarily painted out as a villain in those ways or federal or necessarily unless you kind of have something against get sportsmanship and kind of staying out of controversy. I think of some of the big names. There is slightly more there's more debate around Djokovic in terms of his intentions a certain times. I do think that when it comes to the point about the superheroes, it's actually quite ironic because WTA actually did do a whole superhero themed year of on

"Tommy Paul might have a chance, a small chance, but a chance of beating Novak Djokovic in the Australian open semifinals. That will be the semifinal from the bottom half of the draw. We know that because Novak Djokovic has just beaten Andre Rublev for the loss of 7 games and Tommy Paul has beaten Ben Shelton. Well, don't Catherine. In four sets earlier on today, Novak Djokovic beating Andre Rublev is no surprise him doing it in three sets is no surprise. I don't think to any of us not least to Andre Rublev, the nature of the defeat, though. A little bit of a surprise. Well, certainly disappointing. I think from an Andre Rublev perspective, because I think there was a there was a chance for him to make it competitive tonight because Djokovic didn't start the match the way that he started the other night. He wasn't crystal clear in his focus and his comfort out there. He was irritable early on. He was worried about the wind, he did not like it was whipping around his clothes. He was, he doesn't like the wind, typically, does he, he's got the very precise produced strokes that are at their best when conditions are still, I think. And he doesn't like it. I think he's just irritates him. And he was feeling some twinges. It appeared. So I just thought, if Rublev plays really well here, he could at least extend games extend sets, call into question Djokovic's sort of demeanor and mood, which has been suspect in the early rounds here and was not an issue at all in the previous round. And he just didn't. He just kept on throwing in terrible rallies at the worst times, and then it just tailed away. And I think it was a really disappointing performance from him. It was my least favorite type of tennis match to watch a 5 set match. Which is lost before it's even taken to the court, really, because it's lost mentally. Andre Rublev might have had the tennis to, as you say, challenge that version of Novak Djokovic that we saw tonight probably not win, but make it a heck of a lot closer than that, but he was defeated mentally before it even started, and 5 sets of that, 5 sets of just playing something out. I find that a really off putting spectacle. As somebody that just wants to see competitive tennis, intensity, that match, a one sided score line, it had a lot of intensity to it, it had a competitive edge. Same with pergola. Exactly. I'd have liked them for the first even more competitive and to have gone to three sets. It's a shame that none of the women's quarterfinals did. And actually only one of the men's quarterfinals did that was the Ben Shelton and dummy ball match, but I found this a pretty grim watch quite frankly. Yeah, I don't have too much more to say about it, really. Rubs now lost all 7 Grand Slam, quarterfinals that he's played. I think he and Tommy brado share that unwanted record of having 7 losses and zero wins in grand Sam quarterfinals. It does feel like such a ceiling for him. I completely agree with David like there was a chance there to make Djokovic more uncomfortable than he did tonight and I think I've been out of the three of us, the sort of I think I've had the least big three big two fatigue, I think, but I've found tonight like a sort of real moment where I was like, you know, I'm seeing the 5 next to Rublev's name. He's the 5th seed here. And he's not even close to know about Djokovic. And look, I know know about Djokovic is quite possibly the greatest player of all time. He's staggeringly good. I don't expect Rublev to win, but. But he is 35. But he is 35. He's got he's got a good mummified leg. This things that are professional, you know, the world number 5 should be clinging to all the world number 6. Talking about the level of delusion that required to be a top tennis player. This things that can give you hope and help you convince yourself that you've got a chance. Yeah, I was about as interested in this max as I would have been if it was the number 55 against Djokovic. And that shouldn't be the case. Rublev has got quality and just never really. The thing is, I thought that he might just might be removing the pressure from his shoulders by saying all that that I've got no chance. And that it might even actually work. I ate it to relax him a little bit. Maybe make it a hiding to nothing for Djokovic like he can't win really canny. He can go through to the next round, but he's supposed to win. So what's to gain? Well, it wasn't that. There was actually Rublev genuinely didn't think he had any chaps. Going on to the court or at least that's what he said, pretty much. And that's how it came across in the match. So what else can you what else can you say? Another thing that was said tonight by Novak Djokovic in the post match press conference was an admission. An ambition of something that I think we knew and something David that you had interpreted in Djokovic's dark look and sublime performance against Alex de menor a couple of nights, which is that he said in no uncertain terms tonight, yes. There is an added something playing here after what happened to me last year I want it that bit more I have an extra edge, a quite fearsome edge quite frankly. Yeah, I think he does. It doesn't surprise me. I think, well, if I felt slighted the way he feels slighted, I would probably have a bit of an extra edge as well, whether I agree with his stance on that or not. But no, it does make it even harder for the rest. And like I say, going back to the federal years when he had the whole stadium against him, he just got better.

"Because they said to me, you know, we're looking at our first Grand Slam men's champion here, aren't we? And I was like, well, yeah, probably. And 5 minutes later, he was out. I feel like there were two I witnessed to absolutely definitive holger in a moment today. One was serving for the match at 5 three in the 5th set. When he lost his serve to love, he then Rublev then held to love he lost 8 points in a row, didn't he? He was so rushed. There is a difference holder between eager and urgent and rushed. And that's his whole career, isn't it? Sits about called him out for it. In the pre tournament press conference, he's just all tennis all the time he wants it now. And that might make him great. You know, that really might make him great and it might make things come early. Carlos alcaraz has also been in a rush. He's wanted to be ahead of the curve. But, you know, it also has its downsides and we saw that today. He absolutely fluffed his lines serving for the set. It was a frenzy. It was chaos. It was all over the place. And the other definitive holger in a moment was in the press conference afterwards when he was so much more likeable and compose and direct and open than I was expecting. Made eye contact with everybody asking questions was devastated but very upfront and thoughtful in his answers. I thought I was very impressed with him impressed today. He maturity is not always a word I associate with holder inner, but I really saw some on some in that press conference room today and I put to him the quote that Andre Rublev had given on court about. Wanting to play anybody but Djokovic. And I

"General Assembly is back in Richmond today for a special session to appoint new state judges, but some Republicans plan to talk about something else entirely. They're sure to face democratic opposition, but some Republican lawmakers will use their time in today's session to talk about getting rid of a law that ties Virginia to California's plan to ban the sale of new gas powered vehicles beginning in 2035. I expect that it would be discussed. I expect at least one or two floor speeches to be made about it. Guarantee a spokesman for Republican House speaker Todd Gilbert, though today's session isn't about new legislation. This would be just the start of talks that would continue during the upcoming regular session. To actually begin disentangling Virginia from California, we need to come back in January to do that. All right, let's see your loss of hearing, tears, a fast heart rate of the symptoms, we know those the patient ready for this. Hi, it's Phil Maryland, Francis tiafoe. After he defeated Rafael Nadal in four sets to reach the quarterfinals of the U.S. open. I felt like the world stopped. I couldn't hear anything for a minute. I was like, I was like, oh my God, if it was such a blur and I was already tearing, so I could barely see him and everyone's up and it was just wild. My heart's going a thousand miles an hour. I was so excited. I didn't feel some of that in my life. But he's okay. At 24 I'll put the youngest American man to reach the corner finals U.S. open since Andy Roddick in 2006. And yes, the beat the valid 22 time Grand Slam champion a shock or maybe not WTO's Tennessee's Ben raby. Maybe the most encouraging sign from tiafoe's win was how dialed in he was throughout. He didn't give away too many points. There weren't too many lapses and was really a carryover from how well he played in the first three rounds of the tournament. Now those matches didn't get nearly the same attention, but tiafoe has really been locked in throughout this U.S. open. "Fritz could well come a cropper against. Yeah, possibly van de Sancho or later on Tommy Paul hatching of a Felix maybe. I mean, I'm not trying to downplay Taylor Fritz. I just think it's very unlikely that he's going to win two masters back to back straight up. I mean, Kim, we're not even, we're not even speaking about sebi chord or either. And that's a bit unfair because he had a really fantastic match against nidal as well. It was just unfortunate, I think it was so early on in idio well sort of feel like we've had so many great matches since then. We've sort of forgotten about it, but again, like Jensen brooksby being unseated in that top quarter semi quarter in this second quarter unseated as well is going to be quite a dangerous player FAA third round. That could be quite tasty if that materializes. Yeah, hopefully Felix will have a better week this week, but kick manovich as well had a great tournament. And he's in that section could play FIA in the second round. The third section down will the top half of the bottom half, however you want to say it. We've got Andre Rublev as the top is the highest seed. Well, no, actually, he's not the high seat in the section Mateo bertini technically is. But I would imagine Rublev is the favorite to come through this. Yeah, inform. Gael Monfils, hopefully he'll be playing as well as we saw him against Medvedev as well. He has got a perker in his section. They both had quite a good Indian Wells, but yeah, for me, rob blood from this section is Yannick sinner. Last season got to the final in Miami with that with her cash. Could also be a threat. I know you love a bit of PCB as well in this world. I mean, Kim, Rublev could face Nick kyrgios. In his opening match, if curios comes through Adrian mannarino of France, I think I know we've just sort of bashed Nick curios in terms of his antics, but I don't think anyone can deny he was playing some very, very good tennis. In Indian Wells and to have curios Rublev in the second round, I think that could be very, very fiery, I think, given their both their personalities. If they're both of their powerless and really show up on the tennis court, that could be a very, I think, fiery encounter for the fans. I have to say, I'm with Rublev on this one, if they do meet, I don't think kirill should be in the tournament to be quite honest with you. So, but that's the way it is. Yeah, I think sinner going back to him, but hopefully he's over his illness from last week. But yeah, yeah, I mean, I expect rob level beat curios, so I'm going to go with him for this section. But otherwise, yeah, I do concur kyrios was playing some great tennis. So it could very well be the semifinalist of quarterfinals from this section. Very bottom half of the jaw Sasha's Vera was the second seed at the bottom. This feels very open. Cam nori could welcome through, which would be great. And Grigor Dimitrov, he had a sort of got to the court as in India well. So, you know, had a not too shabby last week, benefiting from Djokovic withdrawal. So yes, very open, I think, to be honest. Well, I'm looking forward to Kim in this part, is we could have an all British second round between cam nori and Jack Draper who is here on a wild card. I think that's to do with IMG as his sponsor who they run, they've got big interests and stake in the tournament. Kim, I still just think Jack Draper on the ATP tour. Yes, he had that amazing match with Novak Djokovic. I still remember him last time. He was at Miami where he was just full on cramping on the court, wasn't a pretty sight. I mean, very, very, very testing conditions for any player, but certainly a young player who's still developing. So I think he'll want to do better than give a better showing than yeah, I think what happened last time out and he's got Jill Simon on a protected ranking like tsonga, fellow French man, but yeah, that could be I mean, that's a classic youth versus youth versus experience match up. Where do you see any hope for Draper? Or do you think C one will know how to handle him? No, I think Jack Draper's got a chance. I mean, Simon is, I don't want to say he's past it. He's getting on with his gay on, isn't he? Yeah, he's in the latter stages of his career. So I think that's a very reasonable draw. Having said that, he's obviously very experienced and has been a fantastic player throughout the years. So with that comes a lot of skill. But yeah, hopefully Jack will have a better experience than last time in Miami. And it would be fantastic to see him play to play cam in that second round and hopefully can come through and continue. Continue his recent good form and go deep here. I think he's in a good place in the drawer to do that. So I'd really like to see him. I mean, let's make some predictions, Joel, because we've been I think we've kind of pretty similar on the same sort of wavelength probably with our predictions, but who are you going for for your semifinal lineup to start with? So I'm got Medvedev alcaraz in the top half semifinal with Nick curios cam norrie bottom half semifinal. I think cam nori is the form player in that bottom half and sorry in that bottom bottom quarter..

"She's managed to, I think, go to France, she's playing in Leon this week, but other Ukrainians sog stokowski has revealed that he's going back to join the army and fight. I think he had retired hasn't he from the tour, but was obviously living outside of Ukraine, perhaps. So it's a really difficult time for so many people and including players on tour who be personally directly affected, we've got a lot of elasticity and there's obviously a big, big player that springs to mind. He will obviously be impacted and obviously a lot of players have spoken up, especially Russian players to condone what has been happening. I think Medvedev and Rublev have both spoken out. But it does bring up the question of Russian players Russian team in tennis events. What should happen to Russian players and a team events that have Russia the fed cup or Billie Jean King cup Davis Cup at the end of the year should Russia be allowed to take part? Yeah, because we've seen at the moment because of the doping situation in the Olympics, I think we've seen Russia compete in previous team competitions under the ROC name. Which felt a bit, you know, for many people, I think it was just felt a bit weird. It just, again, it just feels like Russia, but under a slightly different name, but does this does this situation force the ITF's hand in terms of going one step further and actually saying, well, given what is going on, given we've seen Russia invade Ukraine, do we ban, do they ban Russia from competing in the Davis Cup or the Billie Jean King cup events? And that is, I think that that is sort of where we're at in terms of how this I think is impacting, I think, tennis in the way of international representation. I mean, where do you stand on this game? Because for me, this is obviously going to be a big talking point. I don't feel like at the moment that ROC it just doesn't, it feels a bit of a cop out and again, there needs to be some sort of addressing. And I think it needs to be the same on both sides. And I think what's interesting is that I think in the past, we've seen the WTA, they've taken more proactive and firmer stances on situations. In terms of calling out the fact that they're not going to have any events in China, the difference in decision making. Is that going to lead to a difference in what happens to Russia Davis Cup versus Russia, Billie Jean King cup. I don't know, but it certainly at the moment is, I think it's a question that needs to be looked at and particularly I think yesterday I saw Ukraine tennis federation. I think submit an open letter, I think, to, I think it was the ITF in terms of calling on the expulsion of Russia. And I think also that the Belarusian tennis federation, given their involvement as well. So it remains to be seen, but I think given what's happening in other sports, I don't think it would be a surprise if, yeah, we saw Russia be expelled at least for the time being from Davis Cup and Billie Jean King cup and ATP cup and any other international tennis team events that exist on the calendar. Yeah, I don't think it would be surprising. And I think that would be the most appropriate way of doing something about it. Obviously, for the individual players, you can't stop them competing, that's not fair. Andre Rublev has got nothing to do with what the Russian government have done on the invasion. So you can't punish individuals such as that, but and obviously you would still be punishing them by saying, oh, you can't compete in the Davis Cup and yeah, that is quite unfair or for example, Andre rible if his greatest desire is to win the Davis Cup, but how do they compete in that even as yet ROC? It's essentially they are, we all know that it's still Russia. So if other sports are going to do similar things, it would be a bad look for tennis not to follow follow, follow the same suit. So we will await a decision. I'm sure, as events unfold, there will be one. And it's obviously, I don't envy the decision makers, but I think that they will have to come out with some sort of decision. And I think I hope that those affected would understand, but it just, yeah, I agree. You are AC rock, however you say it. It's like it is a cop out. I think isn't it. I felt that at the last Olympics, and maybe those players athletes should have been allowed to compete, but just without any mention to Russia in the title of the team or, you know, yeah, it's a difficult one. It's all awful awful events awful news and let's just difficult whichever way you look at it. Yeah, and I think what's been so I think great to see in tennis is the support that I think has been shown to Ukraine and. I think also the frustration that some of the Russians I think have in terms of how this kind of, as I said, this sort of situation is developing and I think everyone here obviously the party shop from me and Kim, we've obviously want to kind of support and make sure all these people are safe. And their lives are not in danger. And I think for me, in the tennis world, it was unbelievable to see someone like Diana Yushchenko, having to flee into France. It just kind of, I think, really kind of those kind of stories, I think, just show that how far this is reached so quickly and to see kind of the messages and the responses that the players have had, whether they've been writing it in TV cameras, whether they've been saying it in press conferences. I think it's shown that the tennis community really coming together and as I said sort of showing their support for Ukraine, which I think has been really, really heartwarming. Definitely. It puts it all into perspective, just into it as well. Like Rublev mentioned, I know I keep mentioning his name, but in terms of a tennis match is just to turn in his match, but the main thing is the welfare and safety of everyone. So I mean, we do have tennis coming up this week still. We've got two WTA events, which will just quickly cover before we bring today to a close. Is out in Mexico in the Monterey event..

"Public transport doesn't work, et cetera and I just love. I just love how you get these wild seeds in tournaments and it is fascinating how, you know, different tour de toilet organizers will do different make different decisions. And yeah, it was a wild one, wasn't it, but yeah, four 55 a.m. I don't know. She had players be playing at the time probably not, but was it entertaining? Absolutely. I think it's ambitious to schedule three men's matches, starting at 6 p.m.. I wonder how many people in that crowd called in sick to work the next day. But at least at that time, you know, you could probably get the first train home, at least. It's not like 2 a.m. which might be just a bit annoying. But yeah, I mean, Acapulco, plenty happened. It was an interesting tournament. I think one of the most action packed from this season so far and probably outshot the events in Dubai, I have to say, I think obviously we had generally more of the top players out in Acapulco, but we did have Novak Djokovic returning to action in Dubai. That return didn't go quite according to plan. He lost to qualifier yiri Wesley in the quarterfinals, which we'll get onto in a second because we have to give credit where credit is due to the champion, which is Andre Rublev. This is his second title on the trot. He won Marseille the week before and he beat thessaly in the final 6 three 6 four. So kind of going back to his ATP 500 kind of domination of a few seasons ago. Building that consistency back again after a bit of a sort of slightly less consistent start of the year. Yeah, 13 matches, I think one in a row for Rublev if you include the doubles as well. So his good form is continuing. Yeah, and I mean, in his route to the final, I mean, he was a set down in his three preceding matches. So again, Shane great. Mental toughness, I think, not this wasn't a case of him just blasting players off the court and moving on to the next round. You know, he really had to gut it out to win and take each match at a time. Particularly against Hubert her cash in the semifinal. He was three 6 down and won in two very tight sets in sets two and three ending on a match winning tie break. So yeah, very impressive from Rublev. And I think what was really nice as well was he used that as a platform, he uses tournament as a platform I think to kind of get across his message around the Ukraine Russia conflict that is going on at the moment. He wrote no war please into the camera so you know you could tell that other things were kind of on his mind so it was really nice I think to see him. I think speak his opinion and again we'll get on to it in the second half of the show, but to see kind of tennis players kind of speak their opinion, voice their beliefs and to see Rublev do that. Obviously as a Russian, yeah, I think really amazing to see and I think reminded me that this is not the tournament, yes, it has some incredible tennis going on, but actually there are those bigger things at stake as well. Yeah, which is what he said afterwards, you know, he said that this result does not matter, or it is all going on, and it's good that he obviously used his position and his opportunity to kind of voice that message, which people look up to sports people and it's important that they use that platform in the right way. And the final itself was not perhaps as exciting as the two semifinals we saw, which we saw, which both went to third set tiebreak. I think vessi was probably a bit shattered in the final in the end. He qualified for the event. A lot of tennis to get to that final. Yeah, and some kind of fairly long matches as well as his week went on. I mean, let's talk about his victory over Djokovic, because funnily enough, this isn't the first time he's beaten Djokovic. He's actually never lost a Djokovic. So perhaps we shouldn't have been surprised by this result. I'm just surprised by the two other players that have beaten Novak Djokovic multiple times and never lost to him. Well, we know that one is Nick curios, right? Winds him up a bit. Get Sandra's skin a little bit, I suppose, as he does with many players. At the other player, Marat safin, I guess, that is fair enough because that would have been very early in Novak's career. I remember safin beat him at Wimbledon in the second round. I think in 2008 or something like that. But perhaps not as surprising as the two vesely matches. But yeah, Vettel, a 123 in the world, but he's one of those players, though, that, you know, he was a junior world number one. I think about ten years ago, I think he was tipped for a bit more greatness. I think he won like rising Star Award from the ATP and I think, you know, he definitely should be more up there. His highest ranking is 35, which was back in 2015. And I think he's sort of been in the wilderness a bit really. Yeah. When he should have been. No, exactly. He's got the, I think, he's shown this week. He's got the talent to apply himself to the ATV tour. I think he's been more or less been playing on the challenger circuit, but I think with this tournament he's shown that he's, he is above that and he should be getting back to the days where, you know, I remember watching a Wimbledon where he was a very, very, very solid, big server, and was paying very, very well. You know, he was getting to second weeks of grand Sam's. I think he reached he's reached the fourth round of Wimbledon twice..

"Team elements to it, but we have got team sports wrestling at the moment, some better than others with the participation of Russia in their sports. We've had FIFA release what many most people considered to be a pretty toothless statement saying that Russia will be allowed to continue competing in FIFA event, meaning the World Cup and World Cup qualifiers. They just won't be able to do so under the name of Russia and under the Russian flag or Russian anthem. Now, tennis is in a slightly different situation. It is individuals. And also, we've got Davis Cup qualifiers taking place this week, but Russia aren't participating in them. They're the reigning Davis Cup champions. Does that exempt tennis from having to wrestle with these issues? Or does tennis need to think? And when I say tennis, obviously, I'm talking about some mythical unified governing body. That covers the whole of the sport which absolutely does not exist. But you know, when the school boards come up in your mouth or whatever tournament, it might be, do we want to be seeing a Russian flag? On that score board, or is it not fair to apply that to individuals or in terms of team competition, do the ITF ATP with the ATP cup? Do they need to be taking pre emptive action to say Russia will not be allowed to compete? What's your feeling about that? Yeah, it's a really difficult one. But when I look at those other sports and feel very strongly about the lack of action from fever and I so admire the way other countries have said, well, I am not going to represent my country if we're playing against Russia. I have such respect for that. And yet I have to then look at the sport I work in, and think that yeah, on a national level, for Davis Cup and for Billie Jean King cup, I think the as awful as it is for those individual players that I've just referenced who would be underneath that flag, then it probably is exactly the right thing to do for team sports in tennis as well. And it even occurred to me, you know, how far should this go? Should individuals be barred from playing professional sport if they're from that country, and again I feel I have a not in my stomach as I just say that. That isn't fair on Daniel Medvedev. That is a fair on Andre Rublev. But is there an argument for it? I don't know. Honestly, I don't know, but there must be a conversation. Yeah. I don't know either. I mean, I'm trying to draw comparisons between sports and it feels like what tennis needs to do is what the ITF has done in terms of first and foremost canceling those events in Russia. Then you extend that to team competitions and look, I do think that it's different when they're competing for Russia and I think Russia at the moment shouldn't be in the Billie Jean King cup the ATP cup. I actually think, yes, they should. They should preempt that and they should be banned from those competitions at the moment. And that would be in line with what we've seen with other countries saying I'm not going to play Russia in football, for example. I'm trying to think of the comparison in tennis in terms of players competing on the tour. That would be like, I suppose, saying, well, Russian players can't play in the Premier League, or can't play in La Liga or whatever division it is. And I don't think there's been a suggestion of that in football, for example. And I think I agree with David that that would just seem really harsh to do that to Medvedev and all the ration players currently on tour, but that's not to say that we might not get there eventually. Look, I don't know. I don't think I have the answer for this, but it's certainly a question that tennis, as you said, if there was a single body needs to be, it needs to be asking itself. And seem to be thinking about and doing something about, I think. Yeah, sort of hiding behind the fact that it's an individual sport seems cowardly, given that there is an opportunity to get out ahead of this and as you've said, preemptively announce something. It's so, so difficult on the individuals thing on one hand, I think Russia is not a democracy. It's very, very far from a democracy. So equating equating the government with the people is unfair. You know, the Russian people didn't vote for this in a democratic way. And also any support that Russian individuals might have for it for me is mitigated by the fact that there is not a free media in Russia, but equally change of regime in Russia can only be affected by the people if not in a sort of democratic way that we know in some sort of uprising by the people, therefore treating them as responsible and that could help foster anti Putin anti regime sentiment and ultimately achieve a goal is unfair as it might feel in the moment. I don't know, I don't know. Goodness me, this is not territory that we really are qualified to be on. But and yet we are forced to think about all of these things. Look, I don't know, I don't know how many listeners we have in Ukraine. David can probably tell me off the top of his head. Because he spends all day and a lot of the knights as well studying the podcast stats, but I think we have a few and I don't know, you're probably not able to listen at the moment, but on the off chance that anyone in Ukraine or any Ukrainians or anybody that's recently fled Ukraine is listening right now, we support you and we are thinking of you. Do you have the number to hand David? I don't, but I'll get back to you. Well, David, Davis let you down in your moment here..

"And I think he beats nearly everybody pretty routinely these days. I don't think I'm better as a seed like the trouble him too much. I don't think curios is likely traveling too much. I don't think Isner is the time when too much is in charge with cressey. Oh, he's got Chrissy in the first round. That's hilarious. Yeah. That's an interesting first round. For sure, Crecy plan really want me to Melbourne final serving volleyer. Is there a lot of Americans in the first translator some weird side plays Americans very, very frequently at slants. You probably knock it. He lost a nakashima U.S. open. A lot of Americans start to apocalyptic, at least once in a slant first round. And then schwarzman's in here. But yeah, I like Medvedev. I think that is, especially with the Djokovic uncertainty, I think he becomes a pretty clear favorite. I would pick him right now in this term with that Djokovic because I just don't know again. I keep talking to this guy. I don't know how much he's actually a competitive throw that's been given everything. And so Medvedev it wasn't as best took a loss actually to go on bear, right? The first week of the year, he has done better. Who do you lose to not like? You're asking the wrong lady I know. Okay, let's think about this. Who did he lose to? I think you know how to Google. I will talk about Medvedev while I look at that, please. He lost at the ATP cup to Uber. Yeah. Okay. That's what I meant to say. It didn't come out that way. I know who going there is. His mom looks like Elizabeth Perkins. That's why I know him. But any plays piano am I correct? You're very correct. Look at me. ATP insider. Yes, he lost in the group stage to umber 6, 7, 7 5, 7, 6. Yeah, breaker in the third. But he did beat demeanor. He did beat bertini and he did Felix. Yeah. So. And you explain a lot of doubles and getting really fired up in doubles in ATP cup actually. It's been really fun to kind of, 'cause I talked to Cassatt and I talked to probably Cenk about a bunch of different things, but I did ask them quite a bit about a Russia, you guys kind of dominated every single team related thing last year. And it's been fun to kind of, I love this little crew of Russians, man. They're fun. And they're all super happy and super excited for each other. And dasha was just like, I never thought that I wanted to win Billie Jean King cup ever until it happened. And I was like, this is amazing. And just, yeah, the whole vibe around team Russia seems dope. Definitely. And I also love, we'll get to him when he comes to when he comes to him. But like, I love that tennis Twitter has embraced us on carrazzo as much as I have. Oh my God, he's the best. I have loved him from the start. A lot of people have, but I just feel like he's somebody who like, I don't know, like, pre tennis Twitter with like kind of just ignored like, oh, here's some guy who doesn't know and like win things. But he's like beloved for these things in this way. And he like mythologized for his calves. It will get to him, but he's one sitting tonight being Andy Murray the final Andy Murray as per emotional moment in the trophy speech. So let's move to the other part of this quarter. Talk about someone who wants Djokovic to get out of here. Andre Rublev keeps getting drawn into these Medvedev quarters. This is a real difference for him. I mean, it's someone who's really dominated Rublev beat him. I think that one time in Cincinnati would never have ran to the camera. This is the only one over him, but it's been a very dominant and very frequent head to head they have here several of very much like the relocation to the top quarter. If it's offered to him, and yeah, and he gets a search against mauger, then could play a carpathia, baran kiss, could draw, I think, for him here. The other part of this draw is more loaded. Felix is in here, feel like just was with Canada on the way to winning the ATP cup. Again, an event. Does that count as a Felix title? There was debate about this. I'm going to say no because we didn't count like Federer winning Hopman Cup as his first career title, which it would have been. We don't talk about it that way. I mean, Hopman Cup's not a sanctioned event. I know, but it sounds like a team event. He didn't win his match in the final. Against Russia. Or whenever they played Russia, he didn't win his match. Anyway, if he'd want all his matches, I'd be more enthusiastic about Felix. But he did not. So I'm not. But he's playing he's a top ten. He's building, getting more consistent, taking care of business more. If Rublev stays in this section, I like rub love. If people have dozen stay in this section, malfi gets poured into this line of the draw. And I actually really like my feet. That was one of the really cool stories in the early week of the year and my fees at 35, winning a title after the really long swoon he was in and swamp he was in. When the pandemic was when we were coming back in the pandemic, stoppage. And it's really cool to see him happy and winning and just like Monfils coconuts and ally was good vibes..
