"To grow. Good morning, I'm Mark Lewis. Jacob Kerr is our producer. The top story we're following metro trains have been under manual control for more than a decade following a deadly crash in 2009. Since then, the transit agency says it has implemented a number of safety and engineering improvements, and now it's planning to bring back self piloting trains. Later this week, the metro board will talk about testing the new and improved automatic trains along the red line. The tests of the spring could lead to installing them system wide by the end of the year. Metro leaders say returning to automation should create smoother rides, reduce delays and reduce the chances for operator error. That 2009 crash killed 9 passengers along the red line, and it remains the deadliest incident in metro's history. Another Norfolk Southern train, derailed over the weekend in Ohio. It happened just a thousand feet from nearby homes. It occurred near Springfield, Ohio, on Saturday, and it's coming about a month after that toxic derailment in the town of east Palestine. 20 cars peeled off the track near Springfield, Ohio. Residents nearby were asked to briefly shelter in place, local officials say there is no public risk. According to federal data, rail remains the safest way to move hazardous materials, but after the east Palestinian disaster, Ohio senator sherrod Brown would like to see real safety standards improve. It's clear that their greed and incompetence always takes precedent over making their workers safe and making communities safe that they go through. That CBS reporter Chanel call the national transportation safety board is sending a team of investigators to the new crash site today. Four U.S. citizens have been kidnapped in northern Mexico. The four were in a vehicle when they came under fire in the city of Matamoros, according to the FBI, they driven in from Brownsville, Texas, and were in a minivan with North Carolina plates. They were taken from the scene by armed men, the FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for their return, the U.S. consulate had just issued an alert on Friday because of drug cartel violence in the area. CBS correspondent cammy McCormick. Changes could be coming to fairfax county public schools, sex Ed curriculum, as soon as next year. However, we're learning some parents and teachers are opposed to a key component. The changes include allowing boys and girls in fourth through 8th grades to be together for lessons on topics like puberty and reproductive processes. Currently, students are separated for those units, about 85% of the 2600 people who responded to a survey last fall don't support that change. That's according to a presentation shared with the committee reviewing the changes. Parents, students, and teachers all participated. Some say a push by anti family life education organizations to encourage comments may have skewed the data. The school board delayed voting on the recommendations last spring, calling for more community feedback. There's still no official date for a vote on the recommendations. Scott gelman, news. How long should a school year be? In Maryland, students are required to attend a 180 days of classes, each academic year. However, Ana rundle county wants to drop that mandate, and it wants the rest of the state's public schools to follow. And arundel county school superintendent is backing new legislation that would allow schools to experiment with things, such as four day weeks, or longer school days. This would not actually mean less instruction students would still have to spend a minimum number of hours in class. The Baltimore banner is reporting all of the state's public schools superintendents and local school boards have signed on to the idea of dropping the 180 day mandate, but the proposal still faces an uncertain future in the General Assembly. There is another challenge for displaced residents of the Silver Spring apartment building that caught fire recently. Those residents now say they aren't being given access to their belongings. Unless they give up, the right to sue. A fire that killed a woman two weeks ago at the arrival apartment building in Silver Spring and displaced many others has presented another challenge for residents looking to get their belongings back, MSB says some have been told they can't enter the building until they sign a waiver acknowledging the health risks and agreeing not to sue. And it's causing an under amount of added stress and panic. This piece says frustrations against the property management company, Trinity property consultants are growing. I mean, the longer this draws out, it's just, it's extremely exhausting. Council member Kate Stewart has been in touch with residents. Very distressful. This is something we have to get through together. We have reached out to the management company and are awaiting their response. Melissa Howell WTO P news. Say with us coming up in money news. We all know the dark spacecraft hit the asteroid dimorphos head on at about 14,000 mph, and it was a safe bet that impact was going to change the asteroid's trajectory. Now, based on continuous observations by ground and space based telescopes and radars, dart actually shortened dimorphos orbit around a larger asteroid by about 32 minutes. That's three times more than scientists were expecting. So all in all, it proves it might well indeed be possible to one day manage a threatening asteroid off course before it could impact earth. New developments in the search for a beltway shooter, Prince William county police, found the car believed to be involved in that shooting on fire in Prince William Forrest park early yesterday. The hooper island lighthouse sits about four miles off the shore of middle hooper island. It was built in 1902 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It's just a really, really interesting historic property. Obviously, there are challenges. It does need maintenance and repair. Will Powell with the general services administration says bidding starts at just $15,000, but at last word, no bidders have come forward. They may be put off by a bunch of rules and restrictions. For example, you're not allowed to live in the lighthouse. 24 hour occupancy is prohibited. The only time that you can sort of like an overnight there is if you're doing maintenance, you're doing work on White House to repair that kind of thing. "News The fight over congressional redistricting in Maryland entered a new phase today after governor Hogan vetoed a plan passed by the democratically controlled General Assembly and then both the House and Senate overrode that veto Hogan had threatened the veto because lawmakers did not consider a plan put forward by his Maryland citizens redistricting commission Marilyn matters Bennett LaCroix joined me earlier to talk about the map plan Governor Hogan and Republican lawmakers oppose this map because it creates potentially an 8 O configuration It moves the first congressional district which is currently solidly Republican into parts of Ana rundle county across the Chesapeake Bay bridge to create a district that would be sort of in tosso territory favoring Democrats around 51% to 49% And what are Democrats saying in response to the accusations from governor Hogan Democrats say that they wanted to keep as many people in their current congressional districts as possible Some including senator Paul pinsky Democrat from prince Georges county said they can't really afford to unilaterally disarm because you can't separate what's happening in Maryland with what's happening when the rest of the country So now we're headed for legal action Yeah fair maps Maryland which is a anti gerrymandering group aligned with Hogan has said that they plan to pursue legal action against this map And what does this compare to legal action that's going on Let's say in other states such as Texas I know that some Republicans have called on the U.S. attorney general to investigate Maryland because they say you know issues with compliance over the Voting Rights Act but democratic lawmakers have said that they actually put the Voting Rights Act before anything else in terms of drawing up this map What do you think in terms of next steps for the governor here We're talking about legal action right but the governor has come out and said that he's strongly opposed to this And this is not going to stand Well it'll ultimately be up to the courts and one thing to keep in mind is that the lemon case which actually dealt with Maryland 6 congressional district went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court who sort of punted on it and opted not to weigh in on state level redistricting disputes and Republican lawmakers have said that most likely this is going to deal most heavily with state courts That is Marilyn matters Bennett lacrosse Coming up on WTO P when will metro rail increase service again the latest on that coming up Ten.
