Director Alex Hammer on Expecting Amy
"This weekend showcase with an interview with Alex Hamer. He directed and edited, expecting Amy the new, many docuseries comedian Amy Schumer, who went on tour after learning that she was pregnant. You join Amy and her husband, chef Chris Fischer. From the beginning of her rocky pregnancy to the birth, all as she travels across the country, making others laugh. She's very funny, but what I thought we were going to see was, you know Comedy on stage. It would be like a Chris Rock special or Dave Sopel special, but it's not so much being funny on stage. Is it her being a person who's funny on and offstage but you're mostly looking at her backstage and in her personal life, right? Yeah, I mean, it starts with her creating are developing a special that you want to film them along the way she finds out that she's pregnant while she's on a 40 city tour, So it's always a curveball and like trying to develop her stand up special when she's working on on the road. And and increasingly becoming more and more pregnant, becoming sick because of that, because, uh, lucky symptoms coming from that she goes through a very difficult pregnancy. She cannot keep food down. And sometimes in the toilet minutes before she goes on to stage and Can you and seems to kill on stage, right? I mean, you were there was her comedy Good every night. Yeah, I think later on in the theories talked about like she can always perform regardless of how she feels, because it's something that you kind of drop into. And it all looks like spend. Ah, how you're feeling because you're in a different zone and become very clear with a lot of performers I think go to got to. Yeah, I turned it on. You know, I thought that was one of the more interesting observations about it, she said. You sometimes forget What you're doing is making people happy. What you do is we could hear them laughing. You go. Okay, that's working. Or maybe that's not working. And then you refine your your act as you work your way through, Say, a tour. But it's not like you're going up there. Philanthropic Lee trying to make people happy, It's a job you're doing. You're doing it as well as you can. Oh, and by the way people laugh when you do your job. Well, that's part of my citizens. Isn't that fascinating? Yeah, I think that a lot of people who you know is it is work. Any kind of entertainment is a lot of work to really home here on your craft and instruments. Forget like what you're bringing to an autumn because you're so focused on making something perfect. Not to name drop because I can't but only recently talked to Barry Manilow. Barry Manilow had a new album coming out this year, and he and the New York Times he and I talked about this, he said. I don't have fun. When I'm up there. I'm trying to deliver something. And I'm always cognizant of how I'm doing. And when I'm done if you enjoyed it, I'm happy about that. But, um I enjoying the music up there the way you are. No, I'm working on my job. Yeah, work. Really? And this was shot with a smartphone or smartphones. Is that right? On. It was a combination of like, basically whatever they could get their hands on a lot of really personal footage from her husband, Chris, and then they brought on somebody that he's been working with on tour forever. Market special price You shot a large portion of it as well. Interviews backstage and in their home, So the Knicks of all types of Snap and grab type stuff. And it kind of worked for

"There and welcome to Conan O'Brien needs a friend This is the podcast we'll talk about this a little later, but this as it turns out is our final podcast of our second season, and we have an amazing guest today. She's hilarious. She's very funny I just want to point out that I talked to our guest. Amy Schumer before all of the chaos and. Emotional horrors, and convulsions that that followed the killing of George Floyd, and we are in the midst of intense racial division right now and anger and We're also that butted up against covert nineteen, and so we find ourselves in these very serious times, but I had this conversation with Amy Schumer who I love, and she's just hilarious and delightful, and we had this conversation before any. Of of the upheavals of the last week, so I wanted to make sure that we explained that to people and so I know there are a lot of us out there a lot of you out there that. Would or could use some laughter and could use some silliness, and that is what that interview provides, but I also wanted to be completely honest and say that We're taping this segment now. the heels of every thing that's happened over the last couple of days so. How are you guys doing, Sona, how are you? I'm okay I'm yeah. No, it's funny. No one's good. I ran into I saw friend of mine. This woman and I said. How are you and she said? I'm good and she had her mask on, and this is you know two or three days into the riots over George fluids killing, and she said I'm good. And then she just stopped in her tracks, and she turned to me, and she said I lied. I'm not good and I was like I know. It's a reflects to say I'm good. I'm I'm guessing you feel the same way. Matt Yeah I think so I'm sad. It's a sad time for our country in the people at the core of this struggler justice for George. Floyd black lives. They're like the best of the country right now so I'm trying to take some inspiration from it and. Let, it pushed me into something and to do something. I heart goes out to all of the people suffering yeah. Well we have this making comedy at this. Moment is a strange thing. It's a strange task and and at the same time I do think people should hear Amy Schumer be really funny, an awesome, and then after that. Maybe we can talk about. Where we are the end of the season. Inside Amy Schumer and the movies trainwreck and I feel pretty on July ninth. You can see here in the DOCU series. Expecting amy on Hbo Max Very Thrilled, but she joined us for this conversation. Amy Schumer Welcome Amy. No. We're going to start with. Where are you first of all I would much rather be doing this in person. That's my favorite part of doing the podcast I like people to smell me. That makes one of us. But we this is now this weird way of doing it, but it actually he's been working out fine. Where the hell are you okay as I've said in my text messages I'm not I'm not gonNA. Tell you where I am on. An years yeah, but where exactly I'll pin you. I'll drop you a pin. Okay, yeah, my husband grew up here and so we. We fled New York. Now you're on an island. This is where they send a dictator. That's misbehaved. Make they make him stay on an island. I like to think of it more as as people with leprosy. Okay, you're a dictator with leprosy. You've. Been Sent Atta identify. Does does being on an island. Add to the weirdness of the quarantine I think you're right I think it does I hadn't thought about that, but it's all very weird, and it's also weird to go from New York where I I mean Manhattan where I think they were like estimating twenty percent of everyone was going to have it or something like that right right and then come somewhere where there's been twenty. Twenty nine cases total but I think people are more afraid here than they were in Manhattan. which is you know So you know people were really freaking out here and we're like okay, but we're. You know we've been here for a couple months now, but we're like we just came from where it's really everywhere, but here it's like people walking around lake in like a hamster like humans hamster wheel. I'm like. Have you guys? Yeah, you want to say to them. We're on an island. We've all been here for a couple of months. No you know. Put the Covid can't afford the ferry it, can't it. It's not going to be. It's not gonNA be able to cough up to sixty five dollars to get over here and you know what happened on the ferry, so? Having New York plates If you drive anywhere out of New, York right now have New York plates. Everyone is sure that you have it in that you are on purpose like driving around to try and spread it, and so we are on the ferry. We've near plates. Pay To stay in your car. Because of New York plates where like Okay and I had to pee so bad. I. Everyone knows where this is going, so I, with our nanny and our baby, and my husband, and our dog in the car, I had to pee. In the car in like I peed in our dogs like portable, because I had to piece so bad and we were waiting, 'cause ferries kept getting canceled because of the weather. And like I didn't think. I was going to ever appear in a car in front of my nanny. I just didn't like plan on that and. And it just kind of kicked the trip off like. In a cool way like with a cool vibe, but I wanted to respect the stay in your car..
The New Normal with Phoebe Waller-Bridge
"Is an auditor as always thank you so much for coming on first of all. How the hell are you good? I've got into a rhythm I think. Some senior okay. The Sun's out as a sort of calm minnow streets. We shocked by. I are you. Are you an extrovert or introvert? Ike feel you're an extrovert. You get your energy from other people rather than get your energy from alone. Time is yeah an extra energy from other people. They need to learn time but they get their energy from other people. Introverts need society in socializing but they get their energy from being on their own. Who Goes I know she do? You know what I think. I generally think I'm not sure I would say I was next. But I don't feel like an extrovert when I'm being making sense. I remember amy. Schumer went said. She's an introverted extroverts. Because I'm actually really really really loving stopping it in. This was so confusing this whole time. Because there's so much positive that has come out of the absolute tragedy but one of them. I think really is that people have suddenly become so much more aware of one another and this. It's been this big sort of humanizing force and to suddenly be having thought over the last year. I've been traveling so much and been moving so much dislike just go go go and wasn't sure if I how I would feel just suddenly being at home quite absolutely love it. I love the quietude. Such quite huge does now. It's like it's like. It's like quiet with attitude. Yes yes. It's hard Clinton too is quite with attention. I relate to that and again. I'm very aware that you know. This is a global pandemic and people are dying and I don't want to sort of make about my silver linings but human beings are designed or have a vote to see silver linings. That's who we are and we need to find silver linings in order to survive. So it's okay to talk about them. Are you having a ball? Well I think I've got. I am finding exactly what you're finding. I've been rushing around London rushing around the world for so long and I haven't taken the time to stop and regroup because there's always another wonderful thing to do or go to opportunity or something to create an they. Some of these. Things are incredible work. I've been able to do with choose. Lov help refugees or coughing with Amnesty International. I wouldn't take any of it back. But there's always something to fill a hole in your calendar and I think for both you and may have the last few years that's been I think especially true. I'm GONNA say especially. Yeah it's been a wild few years. I think it's just when you have a lack of rhythm soda new life whether it's so mad that you're letting the last year for Fussell Of sporadic and spontaneous instead of it's spontaneous but it's also completely at the mercy of the Hustle and I think when you're hustling and whatever scale every time your life. It's this constant kind of hunt. Constitutive run and when you do stop it's just a sort of water breath talking with family friends and then go again and actually. This is me which people have been saying for a very long time. Which is you have to make time to take stock of it all otherwise very healthy and so. I have tie it now because I find this. I'm finding this not coming over me and I think it's years of tidiness landing now. My Body is allowed to be still. Yeah I completely Completely sort of out for the first week. Maybe it was the second week. Actually when lockdown began and actually just before lockdown began the first instinct was sort of from so many people. What can we do? How can we help? What can we? How can we like mobilize? And then all of that kind of crazy energy that came from all these announcements in the realizations and that sense of falling into this kind of crazy global panic sort of thrown into that so I think the first two weeks and then we'll talk for the first two weeks it was all about the fleabag fund and then actually when that et cetera getting up and running after that I just completely just goes so gross and earl and also are you feeling better now via what's it because it's just you start thinking about my health and competed way way and because it's not only for the responsibility news. Your health is your responsibility to yourself. Because you're sort of like yeah. Obviously we all want to look fabulous all the time and that's the main reason for me. Yes but now we like like if I'm healthy. I'm putting my Momma risk or like other people at risk and it's just been such an amazing like amazing massive wakeup call up after after ourselves and it's not just a kind of selfish exercise book quite literally. Selfish exercise suspecting that I am you. I'm feeding seeing the silver linings and I think the social distancing thing is actually in some ways been good as well because you can't just immediately just go to yourself forbid

My my baptism confirmation all my name's Nick Games all at once but those guys are great and Risen inches for lunch that day and they'd never had sake freely. Yeah so I persuaded by a big bottle of sake and get warm or or we were drinking cold that day because it was a hot day when the set was hot so they drink a lot of sake and came back drunk but it was not a factor. Alcohol was. They'd never been drunk on sake before but didn't really matter because they were already operating on a certain central nervous system right attitudes to begin with which they compounded in the afternoon which made the performance even more genuine Mike. They were fun. Yeah I love those those guys. What was your favorite role? You played in a Wes Anderson Movie Ensuing they'd have to Kinda work back. Well that's Steve. Zizou job was pretty great. God that was a very challenging job was a really hard job almost killed me not kill me really but it was a really hard job for me on a boat a lot like where you actually ask in the water on the war on the boat. Omegas Willem Dafoe in that movie when he says our Youtube fighting are you to fighting and then royal tannenbaums is one of my all time absolute favorite movies and your role in that. S- pretty great will. Every actor wants to play cuckold. Worst part here great. Great telling me this. Oh what an opportunity it really was. It was pounding Roy. But we know that he's a pathological liar but we're really excited for today's episode. Now it's GonNa be good. This is a really exciting episode. It's called working on our fitness because we all need to work on our fit nets. And we've a lot of questions. We have a lot of myths and we want answers. We've been fucking around all season but now this is the one to listen to very happy that you are. We would like to introduce your number one guest Harley Pasternak. That's right guy is he's here. He's in this apartment and he's on this podcast partly is A. He's a celebrity trainer and a nutritionist. He served as an exercise and nutrition scientists for Canada's Department of National Defence. I don't even know what that means military met but like what were you doing this. I ran the performance labs so I Came up with drugs to make soldiers run faster. Jump Higher and stay awake longer. Was it steroids It was Madonna Fennell. Which is a drug you give narcolepsy and if you give it to a normal person. They can go three or four days without sleeping. Are we planning on this? I can run out and get yourself. So Medicinal Keith. When he gets here all my God now we want to sleep more. They're always trying to get you to not do cool stuff. But you're like you tell us about some Cool Shit. We've never done. We'll say that Harley while as you know I don't like you and your annoying and whatnot but you you you do. Help people with their their preferred lifestyle. You don't just I mean sometimes and then sometimes you are abusive as I've expressed you. I was getting ready to shoot. Trainwreck and I was encouraged to lose weight. I'll say they said it in a sweet way where they made it feel like it was my idea and you know you have the choices of saying. I'm so mad and I'm not changing or you just go okay. Fuck it. I'll do it so I was linked up with Harley and that's when you came into my life this was six years ago and He looked me up and down and I think I saw him pull on his collar. Like oh boy and Yeah and I I mean I was. I lost a lot of weight for that movie and in a healthy way I was hungry. I mean I can't lie about that like I was. I was hungry but I lost weight and I last week quick and that was because of Hugh and it was in a safe way so I will say that you. That's nice. Yeah and I've like waiting for the rest of it. I think you're morally bankrupt I'm going to say you boast the largest celebrity client roster. You Got Gwen Stefani on here. I can't know this whole list. I'm going to read some. Is that okay okay? He works out. Arianna Guerande Charlie Tooth Lady Gaga. Yana Halle Berry. Okay better body than Halle Berry Berry right now. Of course every day Horny. She's the most beautiful woman I'm never seen in real life but I think she's the most beautiful person up close. She's an absolute hag. No she is it and then she'd like some birthday last year. She fifty or something over over fifty she had some birthday and she just like was like and I'm getting my body back. Even though it already looked great mateus was posting these things where it was just. You were like what is happening. Katy Perry Push A T. We all model our bodies. Megan Fox Robert Downey Junior. Okay so you do. Kinda mix it up Robert Pattinson Jessica Simpson who just lost one hundred pounds early stars on revenge body with Khloe Kardashian. Have you guys seen that? Just say no no. You don't support him or Khloe is not because you have not watching. Why aren't you watching bridget? Well you know there's something in like the the the idea of revenge body like your body wasn't okay before and I get the premise. I thought of it but it makes it sound like who you are and what you were before was not good right now. That being said once your answer to that answer for everything right away. I think you're right. And I think the revenge body you can replace revenge with rededicate reset refocus. You originally going to call it. Revenge porn wasn't new laws. Laws Army was against. And it's really it's about reprioritising yourself making better choices and I think this is a direct quote from you. You said a body that slightly less foul than it was off would never say goodbye. So you're getting revenge. Getting revenge on your fat self is basically not. It's the person whose mother call them fat ever since they were little. They WANNA get us the word you isn't it children to stop doing will time and again texts. Harley out of nowhere just your last night I just like to remind you and then the next day was our and the next one says very and then the fourth one said trying to keep him at the very top of his name. You really got me when I needed to drop weight like I had been. Boxing and during these things are looking up. But what the thing you had me do was walk shit ton. There's one hundred sixty eight hours in the week and even if you're in the gym every other day for forty five minutes you're still not in the gym one hundred sixty five hundred and sixty eight hours and it's what you during that that's way more important than anything you do in the gym. That being said everyone should by many sessions from the Emmy as they possibly can thank you. Last time I was in New York I came to visit you and Chris and you said let's go get some steps and we walked to an ice cream. That's right wasn't that good. Okay with Harley so I was sorry go right man alive. He's walking joining a wonderful tree. Ignorance worse so happy to see you like something to drink keith. You must be so young. You trait comedy stupid name. How can you get a parking spot right away garage garage last life point? It's I don't want to discourage anyone but it hurts. Those shots hurt. And then you get the egg retrieval after you you know you're over his filling up with fluid. IVF guys and during this time. I saw you you posted where you were asking other people. Just send me any advice you have about it. Did you give me half ice. Well you know. It's not something that there have been some people who've been really open about it. I Know Gabrielle. Union had had people who've shared their journeys with it but I didn't really have like a big group to ask about it so I was like. Yeah I don't ask everybody get all the tips just like you guys have connect right for for ww. I used my instagram and and asked what should I know what you wish you knew and men like women were just really down to reach out and share and help me and like hold my hand through it. I love that you came in your sweats. So amy sit in the attacks earlier and said this is okay to where I go. You should wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. Yeah and you're having a stylus come over. They were GonNa do the whole thing. I got address. You got address hanging up in my closet. I said just I said it Charlotte. They're going to love you. That's just the way I do love. Charlotte I've performed here live really. Yeah mostly for the Hornets but also I performed standup watch. This and I just ate some biscuits backstage. That will change your life. Yeah the food here. It's not you don't do the point thing or anything. No I use all my points on these biscuits I was gonna say because a biscuit could take you down. Yeah now you said that this whole process is taught you to actually be more patient and kind with yourself golf. What does that look like for you? Patience and kindness showing up for yourself. I think as as women I know they're men here too and I don't want to alienate you but I think as women the AH. The expectations on us are so high to always be okay. Always look your best. Feel your but you know and and so what am I talking about. You're talking about this process of being kind to yourself kinder to myself okay. Do you know when you're talking walking. And then you look out and you're like they're truly fifteen thousand people here and Oprah. I'm like my hi. I'm not high. Yeah but I'm like I think I'm hi. It's really easy to be to feel guilty all the time especially actually now having a baby like just that self gill the self hate and it can get to meet you and and what do you say to your friends like. Give yourself the advice you give your friends love yourself like your your own mother. You know like be kind to yourself signed us you know so. It's those feelings of guilt. They're are useless and they're not real and do you have now as a new mother like are you doing it right. Do you have those am I doing it right. Yeah it's an I'm working and like I know there's just working mom vibes out in this audience. It's it's a constant. There's a constant like just cycle of of guilt and shame about it. You're like should I be he with my baby all the time like somebody else is taking care of my child right now but really what I've learned for myself as like the best thing you can do it to take care of yourself so that when you show up for your kids you are yourself. It's no question but I do. Love Love the fact that you said. Look I'M GONNA I'm GonNa do this for you and then I'm going to go right out. I'm not even GonNa say goodbye to you backstage. You believe it. I'm not GONNA say goodbye. Fight you know so. Let's just now by. It was so good seeing you. You look amazing. So thank you for plumbing Yale. Thank you your hope now. So the reason you're going through all this is so that you can have a sibling for gene. Yeah 'cause you thought just just having one would not suffice no having if you WANNA have one kid. Do you know Presh- I I think. I think my husband really wanted us to have another one because we love him so much. I think he thinks that it's creepy. You know what I mean like just obsessed you know and he thinks like you've got to have another one so that you're not you. Don't make him into like a complete Weirdo I. I'm really close with my sister and we were like we gotta try. We got to try to get a sibling and show. You had a really really difficult pregnancy. I mean not just morning sickness every day like calling me from different different states have connections calling you like your doctor. You know someone who can give me an IV in Chicago. I'm on the floor Yeah it was. I had hyper amasis which I also have endometriosis. And there's not a lot of research on these these women's issues because that's what they are there. I mean they now have chewable Viagra but they can't throw us a bone with endometriosis. Give some money to the studies for ladies also please but yeah I was so sick I was. I couldn't keep anything down. I was hospitalized four times four times like you know. Were you really afraid though during that time. Because you're thinking I'd you know I could lose this baby one in three women hypothesis lose the baby. Oh and something like fifty percent lose their jobs. You can't work it's if you've you've ever had food poisoning it's that I had that for nine and a half months because you know you're not pregnant for nine months. That is a lie. I don't know why they say nine months nine months. Then when you start doing the math and you know it's ten months at least right. I mean it really is and I heard that one of your takeaways from all of this was that women are just the warriors we are warriors. All of us. I mean for real. That is what I learned. I didn't just learn how strong I was. I really learned as a whole how strong women are and you know men are great to like. That's awesome and you guys can throw a touchdown but like can you make baby. You can make a baby with our body. Yeah yeah it's growing now. Football's grape like make a baby. It's pretty amazing when you think about it. It's amazing. Everybody remain a baby. Give yourself a high five. We'll look at y'all

The Hazards of Making Movies About Real People
"The I'm Kim Masters and this is the Hollywood breakdown joining me as many of the Hollywood reporter and Matt has come up. Many times in Hollywood does what it loves to do which is to make make movies and particularly awards season movies based on real people that controversy follows and we're seeing more or less at the same moment to different controversies sees. One of them involves Clint Eastwood's new movie Richard Jewel. which according to the Hollywood reporter's awards reporter Scott Feinberg up ends the Academy Me Awards race? It's it's GonNa be very very popular. He thinks with hatemi members in numerous categories. I'm assuming that probably includes picture but in this movie Richard Jewel. Joel this is about the security guard who tried to warn about the Olympic Park bombing back in Nineteen ninety-six a real event. He is portrayed in this movie. Of course he. He was excused of having been involved with the bombing. He was completely innocent and his life was M- very damaged by this. But I'll tell you what life is being damaged now day day in this movie have character a woman reporter who Allegedly in the movie sleeps with a source with an FBI source to get a story about about this and this person this real life person whose name is used. Kathy scruggs is dead and cannot speak up. I mean this is an outrageous thing to accuse as a reporter of that is a firing offense as you know if you were to get wind of one of your people at the Hollywood reporter sleeping with the source to get stuff and I will tell you in my life there. There have been occasional offers. But that's not something that real reporters do and the editor of the Atlanta Journal Constitution where this person worked is objecting to this and I will just now. This is a Clint Eastwood movie. Clint Eastwood is clearly very conservative. Possibly part of the trump you know the reporters play reporters are fake news world and I honestly Kinda Hope. This becomes the controversy. Because I think it's outrageous. Well it's also part and parcel of the film this. This is an indictment according to the reviews that have come out of both the FBI and the media and how they handled this situation with Richard Jewel. And I don't I don't think anyone is saying that this was the finest moment for either of those institution absolutely not but it does cross the line there to suggest that a reporter did something like this and it's also a trope like you've seen this in other things with sally field. I'll never forget it. I was like well. Paul Newman hard to resist about. We don't do this right and even more recently. If you look at the character in house of cards played by Kate Mara her relationship with Kevin Spacey. Right if you look even Amy Schumer in trainwreck. I mean that was. She was sleeping with the subject of her story. So this is like a trope that comes back and and I am not what a female journalist but I see how deeply offensive this is And also not necessary like you. Don't need it's Lizzie. And let me just turn quickly to this apple premier. You know apple is trying to plunge into this world. It's been a bumpy ride. We've talked about. They have this movie. The banker they were going to have a premier they cancelled it. Why did they cancel it because the son of the subject and the stories about a black man who this is a real story again of who recruited a white man to front for his financial business sixty years ago before the Civil Rights Act? This is a real story. But they have been using this guy. Son is the sky named Bernard Garrett Junior to promote the movie and IT Turns Out Bernard Garrett has a couple of half sisters who say that this guy had sexually molested them for years ears and this has now blown up. It's a different kind of hazard. Apple acquired this film. But when you don't vet things carefully this hazard that can happen. Yeah that's an interesting question because apple bought this movie after it was already made and neither apple nor the filmmakers knew about this controversy until about a week peak before the premiere and obviously the allegations are very specifically time. But now they've got to figure out what to do with this movie. That has this. Explosive allegation dropped their wives. Yeah I mean I just saved. Proceed with caution when you're doing true real life stories and I think it's a cheap out to Take on someone who's dead and can't speak up. Thank you thank

Brag Better with Meredith Fineman
"I'm very excited about my guest. Today we just met and we became became fast friends and we were sitting across from each other. It was sort of a hi. How are you what do you do and she tells me that she helps coach coach women on how to Brag better that is something that really hit me as a person who has major issues with self promotion and we're here to talk about that. I find it very fascinating. Her work is very interesting. She is a DC based. PR and communications expert she's also in involved with it says your leadership coaching which I found very interesting. I'm like you slay at high school reunions. What a cool job. Her name is Mary Feinman. Welcome to Nash B O N Cheese a podcast guest host. She also has a podcast called. It never gets old exploring vintage denim and vintage clothes verts any so the world of secondhand okay the world of secondhand we love. That's why you're here to clarify honey. Thank you so murder. I'm so happy you're here. You're work is fascinating. Thank you and I will say okay and to anyone listening big fan of you and the pod of but you're not alone and having trouble talking about yourself is what I do for a living so cool. Though what a cool job thank you it. It has been a long fight for the Bragg. I just finished the manuscript for Brag better the book which is out in June We have a little ways to wait zero waste waste wait. I have a lot of editing to do but yeah I mean. I'm thoroughly unsurprised that. This is something that affects you. It affects everyone not just women though at my core heart center that's who I care about impacting with this and so it stems from a lot of different things my becoming the go-to as PR person for representing individuals my own work on I've been a freelance writer for about fifteen years I speak I do. TV and people sorta wanted that piece but then we have this extreme which I don't have to explain to you in show business. This cult of personality situation going on where leadership is a driver of business more than it ever has been like traditionally in American history like yes. We've had big families as like you know the vanderbilts or people like that that have been titans of industry but they're more visible than ever and I didn't think it was fair that the benefits associated with understanding president visibility be reserved one for people for McCain naturally which is like three people like. I've taught myself this for many years. I grew up in the DC. You know media in politics bubble being like toted around two parties. I've sounded like this since I was five which is like super fucked up but also good. It's not cool. I'm uh-huh yeah but yeah and then I started is that nobody knew how to talk about themselves and that it was so agree just for women and I was watching the systemic trajectory so it would have young women that want to work for me and this was when find point was more of a PR shop and they could not talk about their past experience with confidence accordance and then I would have friends where I would have to happen and play publicist and then I would literally like living my life yeah yeah no. I mean it's super duper real well. It's an epidemic and then then I would represent really high powered women and they all felt the same way which was that feels really icky to talk about yourself a used Brag. It is a taboo word. We don't have that many other one right self-promotion yeah but you know what it's a necessary very skill set and it is one that will get you more money a bigger job opportunities hundred percent and like. I think that it's just that I don't have to really explain to anyone out here in. La Because I feel like that's so much of what you have to do so much of what we have to do in it is most certainly been a hindrance to me and I don't know exactly when this happened but it's it's. I'll give you an example like you book a show you as an actor like Oh. I booked in episode of show. It's very easy to post a photo of you. Onset post a photo of your trailer post a photo of the script at the table rate and I would see these photos rose and I would be happy for my friends but it got to the point where I was like people are bragging about their jobs and then it would make me not mad at them or hate them or feel weird. It would just go. I'm not GonNa do that when I book of job because I don't want to make other people feel weird about it so then I never did it yeah and that's really if you really just think about it. It's insecurity. It's all stems from insecurity of like. Oh I don't want to you know come off a certain way or whatever but that's sort of in our business you have to do that. It reminds people that Oh you are a working actor and that people book you totally and from that I always like people don't know what you want until you tell them and people don't know what you've done until you tell them so for example like you were just on an episode of drunk history like I might be a random person who has a random show who thinks you only have the podcast and then sees that it was like Oh shit she also acts yes like you. You have to show up you have to that. Everybody is very lazy and does not read and you know you've to tell them. You're available to speak to tell them. You're able to act whatever it is that you you. WanNa do and what I will say is like so obviously obviously I care about doing this for women because being a woman in public is so complicated yes you're judged on you know metrics and factors that matter not that is obviously you know doubly triply true in Hollywood where so much is based on appearance and like. It's funny 'cause I live in. DC which is for the call Hollywood for ugly people and it's it's super true and it's just like so based on intellect that actually sometimes it's funny sometimes like focusing on your appearance in DC is like a a bad thing which is is funny. It's all all Asbat for women or picked apart. You know yeah well what I will say to you too. Is I mean at this point. I've trained and council like hundreds if not thousands of people and particularly your southern woman where I you know I'm making a generalization Zeeshan but gender norms also I would say in the south being polite very overtly feminine dominate s I would put a lot of money on that having some unharmed riddick per cent and that is my argument is that it's a skill that everyone can learn yes what I do is not rocket science so I call my audience the qualified quiet which are people that have done the work but don't know how to talk about it to me. That is not a weakness. It's a strength and as I said what I do is not rocket science. It's the icing so basically what's much harder is spending the time and doing the work and you know crossing all the ts dotting. All the is like that stuff is takes a lot of time and energy. This is sort of different cringe muscled right Affleck's. Yes and it's so hard for women for so many different reasons. You don't have good examples. you have a lot of people screaming and the rest of us like not knowing where to even begin then we have this horrific inverse relationship between volume and merit we reward loud voices and as much as I'd like to be optimistic and say that I think we can get the louder people to be quiet. I do not believe that I think it's about getting the quiet people to be loud life as a woman so you're judge metrics that men are not you know your police from your voice voice. Your ankles your age. You know an endless laundry list of things you feel responsible for other people's feelings because you're conditioned to feel that way. You're saying you know like I don't want want people to feel some kind of way post things but also look historically positive attributes were associated with passive behaviors or like she was demure. She was coy. She was shy all all of those things mean that you shouldn't know how to do these things and I think that like part of my like background growing up but then also so being a PR person and realizing that if you treat yourself like a PR campaign that will give you some of the skills you need and that's what Brag betters. There's all about like. I care that it's not just another like you know white. Lady feminism like feel better like this book is intersectional that it it is not only four women though it obviously women buy books but also that it is tactics that I have worked on over the past decade like it's going to tell you what to do in a way that feels very authentic to you like that's the key issue is like how are you going to brag in a way that feels okay and specific to you yes I. I feel like again. I'm just I'm such like self deprecating and that's comes more into it every time somebody's like. What do you do. whatever like you know what. I mean and I'm done new new. Jackie is done with self deprecating humor. New Jackie wants to let everyone know what's going on in proudly expressed that so where do we begin well. I I was GONNA say so so with that self deprecation like your comedy. You're very funny lady. thank you. I am you are yeah there. You go is it. I mean well I was. I was this past week. I was in San Francisco at leave is and I did their women's conference and I was talking to I did you to brag better talk and I was speaking to someone in the audience after and she was talking to me about accepting compliments so have of this is learning to Brag and ask for the recognition that you deserve you've but then it's also figuring out what to do with it once you get it and how to accept it and how to leverage it to continue and like so there's a lot of work there yes you know. I always referenced the League Amy Schumer Sketch where the friends are complementing each other and you know they won't accept it and say look disgusting trash bag and then amy just says thank you and all their heads blow off yeah like it's like that it's do yes. I've had a really hard time with that. myself but you know we. That's that's a whole other story where so willing to accept criticism. It's like Oh yeah. Tell me a piece of shit like I will. I will totally take that from you. Take it to the bank. put it on my forehead like. Don T sure sweatshirt but no we are not conditioned to accept praise and in those good things about yourself and here's the issue so when you don't accept it it it makes it stop and then it can't give you other opportunities so one one thing that I always talk to people about is like cut out those terms like shameless plug shameless self promotion to Brag but what you're doing with those qualifier demeaning what you're about to say you're trashing yourself before anyone else can ride which is a defense mechanism but we are also doing a saying like I can't stand behind this accomplishment it and your reader or your listeners like if you were to like post something inside. Lake shameless plug that I'm like well. I don't know what to do with us. As the reader I feel the anxiety that you feel. It's transferring to me and if you don't WanNa hype yourself like I don't know what to do and it stops there so like it has a negative effect effect on the people you're saying to also then
Netflix's 'Otherhood' Is About a 'Deep Female Friendship'
"Will start with other hood. It's about three MOMS whose kids are grown and the women are all trying to figure out what they're gonNA do next and their lives motherhood sinking feeling that how's your child's growing up that you're being broken up with on a gradual but daily basis it's inhumane emotional waterboarding as the best description adoption of motherhood. I've ever heard well at this stage. It doesn't feel like motherhood other. The Film Co Stars Patricia Arquette Angela Bassett Facet and Felicity Huffman and let's first talk about Felicity Huffman next next before we talk about the movie she'll be sentenced month for her involvement in the college admissions scandal scandal to which he's pled guilty and her arrest actually delayed the original release of other hood supposed to coincide with Mother's Day. Here's what the film's producer Sir Cathy Schulman had to say on the issue. When we made the film with Felicity obviously we had no idea what might happen later and it was a terrific experience. It's all around an amazing collaboration frankly of five or six or seven women in their fifties of which she was one and when this actually actually happened it had a sort of interesting mirroring effect you know to the film itself in the sense that mothering is really really hard and even felicity character in the movie you know. She has to make some really really hard decisions. She's goes through a lot of hell before she learns to love herself again and interestingly enough. We have not seen it. You know affecting in the film so far people are starting to see it and what's exciting is when you know those who write about it say what a terrific performance. She actually has given in his but you know I think that yes. She's having an intense second chapter here and the movie is really all about second chapters. It's directed by Cindy Chupak. She was a writer producer on sex and the city she also adapted the screenplay she and producer Cathy Schulman struggle for a decade to get it made the major obstacle. The leads were women in their fifties. It was always about empty nesting it kind of was about a stage of life and then we were just discussing. They're not mothers anymore. What are they and I came up with other head from my extensive experience on it was really funny moment when she said it because the scene that you just played imitates what happened when we were sitting thing across the table from one another and we just were like that is the best description of what we're experiencing we could possibly imagine and then it's so much fine to see. Patricia say those words because we had the same experience creating the title itself. Yeah it is a really harsh. I don't know like a right of passage or whatever that period in life is. It feels horrendous because everything in your body as a mother is prone to taking care of your children. I mean our our eyes. Get bad during pregnancy are bones get weaker. I mean even our physical bodies. Give everything it can to our child so once you're sort have discarded thrown away like old. US handkerchief a horrible feeling but there is a bright side. I mean I guess there is something about this story about kinship in about finding people who are going through similar things and strengthen numbers stink the numbers I like and also that your children you know you want them to individually to move away but I think part of the argument that all three of these MOMS have is shirts great. We want you to have your own life but don't forget us and don't be disrespectful towards us and you know we could still love each other and stay connected being adult and have your own life but you know I love you. You and I want you to love and respect me and I think there's a subconscious thing too in the way that we've been from the nuclear family from Nineteen Fifties Americana Donna and before I do think we've taken mothers for granted and it's a subconscious bias and I I would like to have that conversation about shifting that relationship chip and also respecting our elders which I don't think we do a great job of in America. We're talking with producer. Cathy Schulman writer Director Cindy Chupak and actor Patricia arquette about their new new movie other hood basically there's this age group and it kind of is forty nine to sixty nine. That's like this forgotten female generation. You know we're mothers and grandmothers or that's what everyone thinks but what about those twenty years in between where we're still working oftentimes at the height of our careers might be in second in careers. Their sometimes are second marriages. Somebody might have died. You know your your children are leaving your sensuality and sexuality into question your relationships relationships with husbands and lovers. You're suddenly think you should have sex with the lifeguard things. Are you know during this period who this guy is yeah no. I I see that because I experienced that heavily no names March twenty minutes the new what I'm referencing that there's nothing more terrifying for a woman than society saying that after you you do this heavy lifting of motherhood which is up until a child is eighteen to twenty that then your grandmother a grandmother is a great stage but it's very far along from where many women in Middle Age are actually living and experiencing things and there's a lot of life to have and that's what's the fun other hood the movie because they go to New York these three MOMS with this agenda to fix their relationships with their adult sons as if that's possible symbol but what happens instead is they realized who they are. I don't think it's just society that assigns. This valued motherhood. I think it's also also comes from us and it's a subconscious kind of bias. We ourselves carry so in this movie with these friends. I think they do start to go. Hold on a minute. I WanNa read negotiate the life <hes> I don't know when agreed to that or how I agree to that or what happened exactly but I wanna have a different life now. I'm going to add something to that because it is is societal and its internal and its pop culture and pop culture through television through film through books through advertising shapes expectations of of how people are supposed to look how they're supposed to behave and you guys all know this that there are certain things that women can and cannot do behind in front of the camera certain kinds of characters they can and cannot play and there's certain kinds of ways that they have to be seeing and not upset those norms and that is part of how the characters doctors in this story start to think about themselves because they're conditioned by that onslaught through popular culture. I mean I think there's also something whereas sometimes agents don't want their their clients actresses to play a mom of an adult person like you know there's a feeling that you're now crossing over into an area and then that's who you are so then you can't like you said into the dead leads <hes> to you. Are you ready to move into the zone your day. Amy Schumer so true we have it cued up listen last day with Amy Schumer Audition for Mrs Causing. You're kidding me. I read for that party. You got that she'll because it's going to be really good or either. A movie set you gotTa Wardrobe and the only thing they have for you to wear long sweaters like cover you up head to toe Kinda thing. Rarely the poster prefer your movie is just like a picture of the kitchen. Yeah very vague titles like whatever it takes or. Sheen's well the last days kind of saying like we're about to be marginalized as opposed to this movie hopefully puts these women front and center their stories are valuable and they're kind of extraordinary ordinary ordinary characters. They're not playing the MOM. They're playing women who have adult son. This is a damn Mamadee people. Yeah we have a mom at eight. I was thinking on the way over that 'cause I was asked a little bit about like you know Mommy. Chick flick and you know chick flick could only only have become a term because men decided to identify which movies they didn't WanNa Watch. No woman decided let's call these chick flicks and so until there's Dick flicks I've. I don't want to call it that Cathy. Schulman is the producer of other hood. "It's king welcome to three girls when keith the podcast where we podcast i'm amy schumer bridget everett kief robinson ooh very laid back very cool we're doing this right now from my apartment on the upper west side which is cool i'm personally not wearing a bra neither is keith so the reason we're doing a podcast is because we figured out that we could make money from doing it but also we thought we'll get to hang out we get to know each other get to know each other even though we are best friends i don't know keep that long i know that he's a he's a handsome attractive true see you start opener not a closer he is oh my god really the goal of this podcast is to take keith down like just wipe them right off the mat i'll take myself down i'm gonna be i'm gonna be kice advocate i think i think you are to you're going to be keeps only what do you think you're excited to be here what yeah let's make mistakes i'm down i'm i'm not excited about it you like oh no no you're not exciting actually not see i don't believe you i can feel a real joy come in from you you look great you got a nice jacket on jacket breath data for radios we should be doing this in his waterbed and philly new you don't have a war you do you have to rely on the actual motion of the ocean guys okay what do you think what about if we talk about love today i've been in love with with men and said like i'm in love with you and that saying you're in love gets confused with saying i love you because i don't think i think you can be in love and not love the person i've been in love with people and you're just infatuated with them and it's those feelings of like oh my god i all i can think about is this person i can't wait to see them again why mentioned loved then what do you mean in line in low right but what's different in love and love will love is i'm like i love you like i would yeah i really love is real act over here it was not real in love is a feeling that passes i think usually i mean i think in love is temporary what do you guys think anybody that's really old is just like we're showing la anybody that declares how they just they're so actively in love on my nonsense time it's not negative because i believe that what they what people have when they're really together and care about each other is much more decent in deep it's like they really love each other it's not like when he walks in you know your your heart is pounding it's not like you're changing your husband's bladder device powder true it's true i think relationships they evolve and that's realistic and if you think you're going to always be in love like you were in the first couple of months then you're setting yourself up for heartbreak and disappointment be you you seem like you don't buy it no i don't mind i think in brigid don't buy it either sheets shift feel i'm at jacksonville job stay out of her no i think you know you can be in love and love the person agreed is on the same playing field but i think you can you can be in love and love a person but don't you think you can be in love with someone without actually loving them oh oh yeah i disagreed leave that i think you guys are conflicting infatuation with love okay i think you don't know what conflicting me what do you mean what do you think no different than being love infatuation you like gotta feel in at that moment like oh that that fades away right what low is a long lasting thing but what about being in love and love is still love you just is just like certain things that you know you get used to it and all but you still in love i guess it's just totally semantics because and can you tell him what semantics i think it's like you know in college we would say oh i hooked up with that guy and with that meant was sex but to someone else hooking up just means.
