The legislation doesn't mention TikTok by name, but applies to any foreign owned technology that could be a national security threat. The bill itself has bipartisan support. Republican Mitt Romney. When we come together, it says that Congress is recognized the Chinese Communist Party, that is, is not our dear friend. Democratic senator Mark Warner explains that without the bill, China could be weaponizing the platform. It poses both a data collection problem and the potential for TikTok to be used as a propaganda tool for the Communist Party. Here are the preview is Bloomberg's Charlie pellet. This week we hear from Intel IBM and Texas Instruments. Those reports come as big tech companies slash tens of thousands of jobs amid a slowing economy and sputtering profits. Sarah hunt is portfolio manager at Alpine Woods capital investors. I think that some of the concerns that people had about the first quarter could get pushed into the second quarter and the third quarter because earnings may or may not be holding up. We don't really have an answer yet. We've seen a little bit of diversions on the financials depending on where you are. But I think it's really going to be what's going to happen to profit margins. What's going to happen to earnings? Also this week we'll be hearing from 3M Boeing GE Johnson & Johnson Mastercard Visa Southwest Airlines and American Airlines among many others. In New York, Charlie pellet, Bloomberg, daybreak. Lots to look forward to. Thank you, Charlie on the economic front this week. We're looking for a key government report on growth in the final quarter of last year. Bloomberg swinney del giudice reports. Bloomberg economics anticipates the economy expanded at a 2.8% annual pace, not bad while things considered. For now, consumer spending and business investment are providing support, offsetting the most dismal housing market in more than a decade. Also this week, December data on factory orders, new home sales, and consumer spending. They need to Bloomberg daybreak. All right, thank you, Vinnie. Turning overseas, Germany and France are warning European businesses will need to unleash investments on a massive scale to keep up with the U.S. and China, leaders of the two countries met in Paris to discuss how the EU should respond to President Biden's inflation reduction act. German Chancellor Olaf scholz speaking through an interpreter says the block must not be treated differently to others. It is necessary that we handle the inflation reduction aid and formulate a European answer. Firstly, we have to make sure that, as a European Union, we are not treated worse than neighboring countries such as Canada or Mexico, and it can not be accepted that the many local content regulations that are in there cause discrimination of European businesses Olaf Schultz and Emmanuel Macron say Washington's plans unfairly subsidized U.S. companies. And in the UK today, Amy ambulance workers are walking out in the biggest strike by first responders. Trade unions are protesting pay levels in Britain's national health service they are demanding a double digit, pay increase. All right, thank you, Nathan. Now to another story that we are watching, Ken Griffin's Citadel churned out a record $16 billion in profit for clients last year, outperforming the rest of the industry, where a joint now by Bloomberg senior hedge fund, reporter nishan Kumar. Thanks so much for taking the time with us nishan. What is Citadel doing right? It's really a story of Citadel, but as well as the strategy that they manage, which is a multi strategy. So these firms are emerging as the most powerful money making machine on Wall Street. What they really do is hire the top traders in the world. Run dozens of strategy led by dozens of traders and their ruthlessly cut out the losers immediately and let their winners run. And that this combination combined with amazing risk management controls that they have is producing some of the most biggest returns in the industry. So it's Citadel millennium .72. All these players together are producing the steadier double digit returns that hedge funds have seen for many years now. But those are the large multi strategy hedge funds is that correct with hedge funds overall actually lost more than $200 billion last year. So are the big guys getting bigger, the smaller guys are still struggling? That has been the trend for many years now. The problem with most of the industry is running single strategy that in a strategies come in favor and goes out of favor. So that's why the steadiness in return is missing from them. And that's why investors are migrating towards these large multi strategy investment firms. Where they're not betting on a single manager or a single strategy. But they are betting on this machine that basically incorporates a lot of strategies. A lot of top traders and what this has triggered is that a lot of top managers who were running their individual funds individual strategies. Basically, they are giving up on their businesses and just moving to Citadel for millenniums of the world. So then we're going to see more of a consolidation in the hedge fund industry. Definitely, if we look at a multi straps there on the cost of becoming the most dominant strategy in the world, until now, equity long short hedge funds had that dominance in the industry, but for the first time ever, we are going to see multi straps taking over. Is Citadel going to

On the latest edition of the Bloomberg business week podcast, a conversation with Bloomberg businessweek senior editor Brett Beacon on the Bloomberg 50. I would say that the biggest theme that emerged is the tentacles really that the war in Ukraine had. So we have obviously volodymyr zelensky is on the list. But then when you start to look into other industries, you see people in the finance world like Dolly Singh, there was the architect of the sanctions regime against Putin. He's on our list. And then I would say it was also sort of hard to avoid what's going on in crypto and the winter. So we had some familiar names like Serena Williams, who's raising money, including investing in some crypto stuff. People like Katie Han, and up until about a month ago, we thought we were going to have someone with the initials SPF on the list. But a lot of putting his replacement John rayon instead. My favorite, though, Brett is Bad Bunny. Yes. For those who are on Paul, explain that one to me. Reggaeton, man. Oh, okay. There you go. That bunny is kind of fascinating. You know, he sort of emerges in the pandemic from he's really sort of first recognized when he was a teen for his work on SoundCloud. And it's been an incredibly prolific musician in the last couple of years. And it really culminated this year in him selling more tickets to concerts and having the number one album of the year when he had competition from some huge names Harry Styles Beyoncé, BTS, et cetera. Well, president zelensky is also facing questions about the air strike, Nathan, Bloomberg news editor in chief John Michel weight, spoke with the president by a video link at the Bloomberg new economy forum in Singapore. But I'm sure that this is a Russian missile, and I'm sure that we were launching the air defense missiles, but we can't say specifically that this was the defense of Ukraine all that we are grateful for not being blamed because we are fighting against Russian missiles and our territory, but nevertheless. "Be in the works to try to deal with the growing food crisis for more let's head to our Bloomberg 99 one newsroom in Washington and Amy Morris Amy Thank you John international development agencies have unveiled an action plan now for addressing that growing global food crisis joining me now to talk about what's going on Bloomberg news editor Millie munchie She covers agriculture for Bloomberg news She's been following this issue from the very beginning Millie it is always a pleasure Thank you so much for taking the time with us Thanks so much for having me There's a lot going on here much to talk about since we spoke last a few months ago I want to start with the rising food costs that are sparking so much concern Russia Ukraine being two major grain and fertilizer producing nations and that's really where the crux of some of this is happening at least maybe exacerbating something that already existed If you could just bring us up to speed there Yes You're exactly right but the situation in Russia and Ukraine is exacerbating what was already a food inflation crisis where we've seen food inflation rise to historic levels over the last couple of years If you look just at the price of wheat it's a great example of what's going on Wheat futures that trade in Chicago they're up more than 50% since the start of the year And that has a lot to do with Russia and Ukraine because those two countries are both major grain exporters That region of the world is sometimes called the breadbasket of the world And obviously when you've got wheat prices skyrocketing like that it has a major impact on importing nations in the Middle East and North Africa and other parts of the world including Asia Those countries all have to pay more for wheat that goes into bread that goes into pasta It's really a stable for a lot of the world So when you see those prices rising it is a big concern in terms of the hunger situation And we both mentioned how this is an exacerbation This started being a problem before Russia invaded Ukraine Can you give us a little background a little history here as to what was going on before that happened Yeah so global food prices have been on the rise basically since the start of the pandemic You've had one issue after another really crimping the global food production and sending prices much higher First of course we had the snarled supply chains of the early pandemic time but they didn't go away right then The lasting impact of those supply chains we can still see it in things like higher shipping costs And the fact that a lot of firms have had a trouble finding enough labor And then on top of that you've had the climate change situation Climate change has made it harder to grow food in a lot of parts of the world You have major drought grouping places like Brazil which is a huge coffee grower and a huge sugar grower You've got drought in places like Kansas and the U.S. a big wheat producer and at the same time you've had things like record rains in some parts of the northern U.S. and into Canada And that has meant that you've got flooded fields where you'd normally planting soybeans at this time of year Millie when we think of food shortages we might first think of developing nations or emerging markets for better or worse that might be where our mind goes first But what you're talking about is global That means it's going to impact the western world as well Are people already starting to see this Yes Every single part of the world is being impacted by the rise in food prices and the huge inflation that we've seen over the last couple of years Of course the situation is most acute and poor countries developing countries If you take a country like Yemen or Syria Ethiopia people are on the brink of famine There's a lot of hunger there If you take a country like the U.S. we've seen longer and longer lines at food banks Some of that you know last summer of 21 just a little bit as there were some government relief programs that brought some aid to people But as those programs started to run out last fall and into this year 2022 demand that U.S. food banks has been back on the ride And at the same time those food banks are grappling with the same kinds of food inflation that regular consumers are That means their dollars are being stretched further They can't buy as much food to put on their shelves They can't afford the fuel prices that are needed to make the delivery run to go pick up huge supplies of food And so you've seen empty shelves pictures of empty shelves at U.S. food banks just because there's so much pressure from the inflation situation And this sounds like it is only the beginning Bloomberg has been writing that things could get even worse the Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey warning households could witness an apocalyptic shock from food inflation Can you give us a little background there Yes So all factors that we were discussing earlier climate change the pressure on farmers None of that is going away And so you're going to see continued impact on production of food And at the same time a lot of consumers especially in the U.S. have actually been shielded from the full brunt of storing expenses so far Places like distributors small businesses like restaurants they haven't raised prices for their customers as much as they've seen their own prices go up We talked to a person who runs a pizza joint for example in Mississippi He said that about 18.
