Biden pitches 'once in a generation investment' to Congress

"Biting trying to get Congress to approve a spending plan that has a big price tag. President Biden is urging Congress to think big but also spin Big Republicans now issuing a warning those saying taxpayers will be furious with what they see when it comes the changing role of government for decades to come. On Friday, the president had chance to go up to Philadelphia to celebrate Amtrak's 50th anniversary. If there he also called for spending trillions of rebuilding infrastructure, including on the rail. Roads. The president, saying his economic agenda is essential to keeping America's economy competitive with the rest of the world President's doubling down on his plans to increase taxes on wealthier Americans and corporate America to cover this trillions of spending. But Republicans argued tax hikes could kill any economic growth and really have companies think twice about doing business in the United States. Maybe go elsewhere, boxes marked married, It's

Biden Visits Philly to Celebrate Amtrak, Promote Infrastructure

"President Biden wasting no time after this week's address before a joint session of Congress traveling to Philadelphia today to try and sell his spending proposals to the American people from jobs, the infrastructure, education and child care, the president's proposals will cost trillions. I spoke with Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace about how the president will convince the public and Republican skeptics that it's all worth the hefty price tag. President the White House they've made a calculation. That because of all the money, and there were trillion dollar packages passed under President Trump in with the Republican Senate that that isn't a red line as much as it used to be in the past. And that there are would be greater acceptance for it. And, you know, look, you're talking about things that directly affect you're not bailing out Wall Street here. You're talking about money for community colleges money for four childcare. Having said that there's a lot of resistance from Republicans, especially to the tax increases and even some from more moderate. Democrats just that the enormous price tag So do I think they're going to pass something? Yes. Do I think they're going to pass the full $4? Trillion? No, probably not on those lines Criss. You had some high praise for the president's speech this week before a joint session of Congress, he said. It's going to be a popular speech with the American people. What did you think that and which people do you believe I could be happy with it? People who are getting something You know, I wasn't really saying that it would. The speech was good or bad. I just think as a political assessment, it's going to be popular, because basically what he's saying is, I'm going to give you a lot of stuff. $4 trillion with worth of stuff, whether, as I say it's child care or new bridges or You know, better airports or expanding broadband. And guess what? You're not gonna have to pay for it because big corporations and people making over $400,000 a year are are gonna have to

COVID-19 Relief Package Includes Billions For Transportation Sector

"All right how often did you fly. Or maybe the trainer buster in the pandemic. Yeah the transportation sector has been hit hard but anyone who rides in trains planes or automobile should benefit from the one point nine trillion dollar cove relief package. Npr's david schaper reports. It was a year ago this week. The us what unlocked down highways and airports were suddenly almost deserted. People travelling overseas scrambled to get flights home at mass transit. Trains ran nearly empty in the virginia. Suburbs of washington. Dc forty six year old. Sandra vigil had been driving buses packed. with sixty. to seventy people are more. We ended up taking towards the end of march. He was like one two people per ride. If you had any people at all last march twenty ninth vigil says she about ninety five percent of her loudon county. Transit co workers were furloughed. Her's lasted four and a half months and unemployment wasn't enough to make ends meet. A lot of fail behind are not rental car payments. Because he was either eating or paint a car or paying the rent and thing they lakeville transit systems across the country so ridership plummet ninety percent or more in revenue fell with it yet. Mass transit is essential especially for many low wage workers. Again bus driver. Sandra vigil in order to keep the buses running and to keep us working. We needed this money. The relief bill includes thirty billion dollars for transit. It also includes one point seven billion dollars for amtrak enough to bring twelve hundred furloughed employees back to work and restore daily service on long distance routes and there's funding to help states continue fixing crumbling roads and bridges offsetting. They're lost gas tax revenue as for airlines. I have fantastic news year. That's american airline ceo. Doug parker in a video message to employees about the plan which includes another fourteen billion dollars payroll support. That's good news for the thirteen thousand american employees who were facing furloughs april. First so if you have one of those worn out notices we sit out in february. Tear it up. There aren't going to be any furloughs at american airlines in april and with vaccinations on the rise. Hopefully never again. Ceo parker says the last three weeks have been the airlines best. Since the pandemic hit with bookings and passenger volumes up that's happening at other airlines too so much so that after months of hemorrhaging tens of millions of dollars a day the ceo's of delta and united now expect to reduce their daily cash. Burn two zero this month or next while southwest is on track to break even by june. Of course that's relatively easy to do. When tax payers are essentially covering much of your payroll airlines have now received more than fifty billion dollars in federal payroll grants since the start of the pandemic. This was hugely important. And as a pilot for american airlines at spokesman for the pilot's union. The last thing i wanted to be is on our heels when everybody was ready to get back. Flying tiger says if pilots had been furloughed. They need weeks. If not months of training before being able to fly passengers again. You do not want to be staring at the recovery and turning around and seeing the flight deck empty. Because you weren't able to train. The pilots quickly. Enough joe sweet. Herman transportation professor at chicago's depaul university. Says this government aid is crucial is pretty clear that the airlines were such a desire straight federal assistance and a big way we would have lost an airliner to sweden and says the federal aid helps airlines amtrak transit agencies and highway departments continue critical operations while adapting to a post covid world a world that will likely lead to more operational changes in the near.

Ask Geoffrey: Chicago's Old Passenger Rail Stations

"Chicago's old passenger railroad stations for decades acted as the city's front door where people from all over the country arrived seeking a better life or just the thrills of the big city. Jeffrey bayer takes us back to the golden age. Rail travel in this week's ask geoffrey. Hey geoffrey good to see you paris all right so we have a question from larry gardner of skokie he says. Could you do a story on the old train stations that once stood in downtown chicago. Well of course we can. There is as you mentioned. The the late nineteenth century the early twentieth century this was the golden age of rail travel when people traversed the country on trains. And of course right at the center there at the hub of it all was chicago. It's hard to believe. But as recently as the nineteen sixties there were six passenger train stations in downtown chicago today. All passenger trains that come into the city from beyond the suburbs. Go through the last one standing union station which is now owned by amtrak. It's designed including this now. Demolished concourse was right along the river there and the colonnaded main building which is still standing right behind it. In this picture of those things recall the grandeur of rail terminals in those glory days of designed to wow the traveler of the way many airports do today met with. Certainly the goal of another neoclassical designed terminal. Check this one out owned by the chicago and north western railway you know classical buzzards and it stood at what is today. Ogilvie transportation center which is operated by metra. That station included ornate concourses. Waiting rooms even dedicated spaces for barbers and hairdressers. People traveling across the country The chicago north western railway traced its roots to chicago's very first railroad. The galena chicago union established back in eighteen forty eight. By chicago's first mayor actually will be ogden. Certainly the golden age of travel there and then another key player. Of course you hear references pop culture all the time the illinois central oh absolutely That country that company billed itself as the main line of mid america. It was a dominant player. Both in passenger and freight rail their main passenger terminal was called central station once stood just just south of grand part right on the lakefront there. The railroad built this mammoth terminal in one thousand nine hundred three in part to accommodate the influx of visitors. That were expected for the world's fair that year you'll notice almost all of these terminals have clocks or clock towers so people hurrying to catch trains didn't have to fumble around for their pocket watches that of course they had watches it. All central station was also an important point of entry for many african americans who came to chicago from the south during the great migration with like so many of its contemporaries central station met the wrecking ball. In this case in the mid one thousand nine hundred seventy s amtrak diverted there trains to union station but there is still an active platform. Eleven street serving the metra electric line and i gather it's the inspiration for that residential development around their central station. Which i believe. Richard m daley lived there for a while and not to be confused with grand central station. Of course right. That's right and yes. We had our own grand central station. here in chicago. Not new york's wasn't the only one ours was at harrison and wells on the western edge of the loop. Read along the river for about eighty years. It was just north of if you know we're river city's development is today Traffic declined grand central after world war. Two this photo with the board of trade there in the background was taken in nineteen sixty seven at the end of the stations life. It was torn down in nineteen seventy one and this is one of several places in the city. were abandoned. Railroad land is being redeveloped during construction of the new development on this old site buried. Stones from grand central station were actually unearthed and they've been re purposed for a river walk. One chicago train station of actually is still standing So in addition to union station is dearborn station. South loop although of course. It's on train station anymore. You can see its clock tower visible all the way from the north side of lube looking south down on dearborn but what happened to the top of that clock tower. Take a look at this early photo. And you'll notice it once had this huge wooden flemish roof on top of it but in one thousand nine hundred twenty two. It caught fire. Look at these incredible photos from the scene as crowds gathered. Luckily firefighters were able to save the building. But but not that tower roof. I the nineteen seventy s. Most of the train. Shed was demolished but the facade and portions of the terminal were preserved as part of a mall. Serving printers row by the building is still called dearborn station. In fact peres as you just pointed out. Many old stations live on in the names of new developments of the one. You mentioned central station. Just south of grand park word. Mayor daley used to live and then a new apartment building at harrison and wells is using the grim central name

Experience Traveling By Train

"Start today's travel. With rick steves. With other. Eric wanner he recommends seeing the usa from a long distance train. Ride on amtrak. Our interview with eric was recorded just before the covid shutdowns kicked in when we travel. It's fun to see the world from a different perspective eric. Winer believes travel by train offers a rare combination of expansiveness and coziness. He spent a lot of time travelling by train while reading the work of great philosophers and for him. It goes together beautifully. He writes about that in his latest book. The socrates express eric. Thanks for joining us. Happy to be here so you actually took the train from washington dc to portland that sixty four hours. You could have flown in about five hours. There's just nothing rational about that. No it makes no sense. It makes no sense from a time point of view. Obviously it makes no sense from a financial point of view It really doesn't make sense from a mental health point of view. Either but i loved it. What can i say. I love every every minute of every hour of you know. It wasn't always. It's not the most glamorous way to travel but this just something to something awfully compelling about you made a very good case of that first of all you talked about the people you should the platform with. I mean okay. You're standing on the platform with surrounded by twenty or thirty people waiting to get onto that Train who are they okay. I'm going to do this quickly. Therefore determined therefore categories of long distance amtrak travelers. Okay number. One is retired people with lots of time on their hands. Number two is people who are afraid of flying. These are my compatriots to They take the train a number three or foam irs a fomer is a real enthusiasts. Who gets very excited about. Locomotives and other things like that means. They're so excited. They foam at the mouth. That's the idea okay You care to take a guess with the fourth category. As you'll never guess mennonites mennonites lots of minute nights a matter night. You mean like Lou dates are people that don't want modern. Well they apparently they They can fly but they can travel by train long distances. So these are the four categories and then there was me and i don't fit any of those categories. I was a category into myself for your kind of the opposite. Because you mentioned you have criminal phobia which is A fear of lack of time. And and you do just the opposite. It's that some kind of therapy. It was it was sort of this. What are you desensitize yourself to it. Well i always feel that your time is valuable. And i need to be making the best use of it and when you're on the train for some sixty plus hours you're just you're forced to slow down. I mean you're either go crazy or you slow down. Those two choices and i decided to slow down. The train is going to get the portland at its own pace. And there's nothing you can do about it. It will stop occasionally for an hour to for no apparent reason whatsoever and then start up again for no apparent reason and i would ask my fellow passengers if we stopped and they've just laugh at me like We got a new one. We gotta a rookie. Here in amtrak stan. You do not ask why. He thinks he's human. Beings are more important than freight right. We do we. We wait for free trains. Because amtrak does not own most of the tracks across the country the free traits everytime i go to portland derek from seattle and the train. I think i'm doing something nice for the environment. And so on. Or it's just kind of a cool thing to do and it's frustrating. Because i have chronic phobia also and i don't know beiber waiting here and somebody reminded me freight trains get priority over humans in the united states. That's not the case in europe but in the united states. That's the case but for those of us who like you and me have a fear of lack of time where where we schedule things. Its pedal to the metal. It's interesting how a long trip on a train you mentioned. It was like you hit a mother of time. Suddenly you had this big gift. That i guess you got more time just by slowing down right. And it's it's forced right because you can't go off and say we're going to go into into town and in fire up the laptop and get some work done. I mean you're on the train and you stay on the train and it's got through. I went through an interesting cycle. I i thought oh this is great. I've got this time. This is really good. I should do something. And then i just get antsy. And i started rearranging my little room at and moving things around and i started to go a little bonkers. I needed to do something. And eventually i came to acceptance that that he was gonna take a really long time to get to portland and i needed to just go with the flow and It took me a. I think somewhere around montana. I hit acceptance in there.

One Thing Millennials Aren't Killing? Public Transportation

"Millennials are often blamed for killing things. You know like gulf mayonnaise vacations marriage. It's almost become a cliche. Well there is one. Many millennials and their younger counterparts in gen z save public transportation urban living concern for the environment and a lack of romanticism. About cars are some other reasons why. Npr's mvp has more. There's one word that twenty four year old michelle. Santa maria keeps using when she talks about public transit. I feel like it's so cute. it's just cute. it's so cute. i think it's cute. I mean it's clear that for her. Public transportation is about a lot more than just getting from point a to point b. santa. Maria is one of the many millennials who aren't as car crazy as their parents generation. She belongs to a facebook group called. And brace yourself. It's a mouthful. New urbanism seems for transit oriented teens. The acronym is numb tots. Which is what they call themselves. There are more than two hundred thousand members. And they share funny posts but also debate transportation policies and fantasize about a world in which nobody needs a car but the pandemic has crushed that dream across the country drop in ridership have led to budget cuts and service rollbacks which means a lot of trains and buses are coming less frequently. If at all said the honest it's infuriating in a way. William clark is also a number top. He's twenty five years old and lives in philadelphia. He worries about transit workers as well as the commuters who ride buses and subways not because they love them but because they don't have a choice because when you reduce the amount of service you have to pack more people onto your vehicles at least a higher possibility of contract code. It's actually pretty scary. He works from home now. But he's trying to support the system in other ways. He's a member of a transit. Riders union in philadelphia where he advocates for the needs of writers in the city. Who might not be able to make public meetings across the country. Twenty five year old. Alex lee is advocating for transit. In san jose california he got himself elected to the state legislature and appointed to the transportation committee. If you start putting transit then you're really hurting the people that depend on it. Most people who don't have access to cars or people who rely on these little life against soon for work and lobbies are essential workers twenty-seven-year-old tens and trump used to be one of those essential workers. He was an icu nurse until he moved to vermont in burlington mason wide. And here's the other thing. It's the middle of january. We just had a snowfall and biplane is just as clear as any road. He left in part because he feared for his life biking on the streets and the commute on the subway could take as long as three hours. So what numb tots like him. Think about the new. Us president whose nickname after all is amtrak. Joe and who's appointed a millennial people judge as transportation secretary some are hopeful but ciampo is not impressed is actually millennial. He seems ancient. Let me look at this age. I'm fairly certain that he is to get on my phone and be like. Oh dang is he we google it and it turns out buddha. Judge is thirty nine so so i guess he counters but it doesn't think like a millennial no i don't i don't think so compel thinking like a millennial means not thinking like a politician like those politicians from previous generations who promised major upgrades to public transit systems and never delivered a peasley npr

"In washington it is also a very very big week. President-elect biden scheduled to be sworn in as president at noontime tomorrow chief-of-staff ron claim saying the biden is planning a ten day blitz of executive actions. And for that. I'm gonna go over to joe. Who i think's going to go to washington. Yes to lon moy is going to. I don't know if she's got every executive action she's ready to go into but she's going to have the latest on the inauguration and everything surrounding The inauguration the biden teen plan for a ten day blitz. So we got that going for us. I i whatever. I'm ready for it long. That's what presidents do but i've got a little trepidation with some of it but elections have consequences. It's coming keystone. That's going away at not taking. I think that over the next over the next few days we're going to see is just a real sort of divide and juxtaposition between some of the pomp and circumstance and then some of the policy so obviously the inaugural ceremony is gonna be dramatically scaled back today. Have their senate confirmation hearings today. That includes janet yellen for treasury secretary along with his director of national intelligence homeland. Security secretary of state and defense secretary. I got an early copy of yellen opening statement and she does plan to make a forceful for that one point nine billion dollar covert rescue package. That was outlined last week. She says without further action we risk a longer and more painful recession now and long term scarring of the economy later. She also says that with great at historic lows. The smartest thing we can do now is to act big now. As for that flurry of executive orders abiding planning within his first few days many of them will reverse the decisions made by president trump. The latest example came just last night on restricting travel from europe and from brazil the trump administration had said plan to lift those restrictions on january. Twenty six though visitors would still have to provide a negative cova test biden spokesperson immediately. "I love traveling by train. The sounds the scenery long distance train travel is almost undeniably romantic and yet. I almost always opt for airplanes in normal times. Train travel is just too time consuming for me and most average travelers, but of course we're not in normal times, and that's giving Amtrak and advantage over plane travel that it hasn't had in more than seventy years so rights Robert Clara and editor at Ad Week Clara unearthed a seventy four year old report produced by the Association of American railroads in a desperate bid to compete with convenience of flying. The report touted the solitude and comfort of the sleeping car over time of course that promotion failed. Until perhaps now once again in a new century for a new reason, Amtrak is making that same argument last week Amtrak, a two for one promotion, for its Roumat's tiny private compartments whose seats convert to upper and lower sleeping berths at night. Buy One ticket for a trip down the east coast or from Chicago to Los. Angeles and your companion can share your cozy for by seven foot space for free. Not Surprisingly Amtrak is promoting the affordable room at a great solution to cabin fever by staying isolated in your tiny train compartment. You can see the country without being pressed up against the flying masses. The ticket price includes linens, towels and meals which you can eat in the dining car. For! True social distancing have them delivered to your room at ticket. Holders can venture out into a big window observation lounge lounges at train stations, but must wear masks, and naturally Amtrak has stepped up its sanitizing procedures to tickets are available on many different lines like the California Zephyr which travels from the West Coast through the rocky mountains on its way to Chicago or take a different route out of Chicago, and travelled through Memphis on the way to the big easy on the city of New Orleans line. Comes no surprise that airlines are suffering because of covid nineteen with most people staying home, so to is Amtrak. The organization received a Billion Dollars of federal cares act funding to keep employees on the payroll through the end of September according to USA Today but on July Sixth Amtrak reduced the frequency of many lines and last month it warned employees of more doom and. And Gloom in October, it plans to cut service even more and Shrink the workforce by twenty percent. The company says it will cut staff through voluntary buyouts, early retirements and layoffs, if necessary. According to USA Today more than thirty, two million passengers climbed aboard an Amtrak Train and twenty nineteen, the paper reported, but Amtrak predicts it'll have half that ridership in twenty twenty one. Trying to boost sales, Amtrak is also cut many other ticket prices to the bone including tickets for the a Selah, it's fastest train on the ACELA. It'll cost you only sixty to seventy bucks to speed from Boston to new. York to Washington DC less than half the usual prize that deals good through the middle of September, according to ask traveler.

It's been past few years there have been several deadly crashes on Amtrak routes two years ago Amtrak brought in an outsider to fix these problems his name is Richard Anderson the former CEO of Delta airlines since he took over Anderson has been making a lot of changes and also a lot of enemies today on the show Ken Richard Anderson Make Amtrak relevant to the future of American Transportation welcome to the journal our show about money business and power I'm Caitlyn Bob I'm Ryan Knutson it's Tuesday October Fifteenth so tell me about who Richard Anderson is what's his around most famously he was the CEO of Delta Airlines for nine years he is a tough boss Ted man as a reporter based in Washington DC running delta he was famously and or infamously one of the more hard headed airline CEO's really of his generation how so in taking over Delta he was taking over an airline emerging from bankruptcy he turned them into a very profitable airline and he was really willing to part company with other airline executives at one point Delta quit the airline trade group over a policy disagreement he just sort of a guy who has been seen appears as willing to Zig zagged and a guy who's totally unapologetic about it if he felt it was the right decision and this is exactly why Anders it was called to head up Amtrak what I think a lot of people involved in the railroad would acknowledge was just a kind of organizational dysfunction when they went out to look for a CEO to run this railroad they went looking for someone who was gonNA knock some Ed's together and put a charge through the company and get it looking better so why do you think he decided to take on a job at a challenging operation like Amtrak it's a really good question I think the guy was in the mood for a challenge he's been on the hill a lot since he started Amtrak and usually finds a way to work into his testimony the fact that he doesn't get paid need to run Amtrak he doesn't get paid to run Amtrak doesn't get paid there's GonNa be no ability on the part of workers to say Richard Anderson is eliminating these jobs while he's making X. number of dollars a year that line is not available to people who disagree with this decision there are a lot of people who disagree with some of the things Anderson is doing to change Amtrak one of his fights about how to make train safer there've been several major accidents in recent years in two thousand fifteen an accident in Philadelphia killed eight people and another in two thousand seventeen in Washington state killed three hundreds of people have been injured Anderson thinks these crashes could have been prevented with more automation and train cars pilots increasing I use automation to fly planes in Anderson wants to put similar technology in trains the most shocking thing to anyone who is coming from aviation into railroading is the amount to which safety still relies on one human being in railroads if I'm an engineer and I drive a train from New York to Philadelphia I am required to Eddie and memorize the route what the landmarks are that I'd be passing knowing that if I pass this factory building on the right hand side of the tracks that I am x number of meters away from zone I have to slow down or speed up wow that sounds like it takes an enormous amount of memorization it's total reliance on the human brain a system of rules and we know that the brain will let us down from time to time and you have in the case of an Amtrak train hundreds of souls riding on that so if he wants to do a very aviation style safety approach on the train and in particular wants to bring screens into the locomotive cab so that you would have a sort of a heads up display in a moving map that would show the engineer where he is at all times and that is completely anathema a two railroad tradition why would there be any opposition to this idea well the fear of distraction among engineers themselves the engineers union and the safety regulators has always said no screens whatsoever no way and probably the most serious rule other than you cannot be drunk or on drugs when driving a train is you cannot have your phone on because the chance of distraction is so great so that's a big fight that he's having Anderson faced another fight after he took on an issue that nobody disagrees with trains being on time one of the reasons Anderson says trains are often late is because of hobbyists people who restore old train cars and attach them to the back of Amtrak peak railroad car from the head of the Pennsylvania Railroad and can afford to store it somewhere the way it worked for decades was we could hook that onto the back of an Amtrak Regional in his trying to provide is modern efficient twenty-first-century transportation and importantly profitable but how do you turn around a company.

"That's just not as many and our prices for tickets on Amtrak on long long-term trains. I know these are never short runs, but on the east coast, for example. But our tickets priced like airline tickets are with as as the number of seats or places or romance get sold the prices on the remaining ones, go up. Honestly, not actually sure I believe so yes, okay. It's a standard, Sandra. And. What how would you describe the facilities because you're always we're always reading our newspapers Amtrak's quench? In the budget and congresswoman give it enough money to do certain things to speed up the tracks and improve the cars. But what grade would you give to the status of these cars on these long distance trips for quality cleanliness sophistication wifi that sort of thing? Yeah. I think it's a much different experience. When a lot of the feedback. We're getting is, you know, our planes are sort of plugged in. And you're sort of on your own a lot of people have these train trips and actually communicating with different passengers, it's a lot more of a community experience. I'm so it's a lot different in terms of you know, the experiences and what you're doing. I'm going to do a lot of time to kinda like look at the US breast, and I think that's really important this holiday season. But I'm asking a little bit about the quality of the cars in the seats. And so on I mean, these are the trains shipshape, I guess that's the way to put it. If you don't mind me mixing. We keep them. You know, we keep them clean and shipping the shiny. Also, we, you know, there's a lot of space there too. Which is really nice no question about Libya Irvine is superior manager for Amtrak. You can find more details at Amtrak dot com. And she tells us that there are still some valuable reservations for even this this holiday season. I would imagine like airlines at the beginning of January is sort of a slower time. "It and i was like you gotta be kidding me man this is unbelievable with amtrak off the rails a and they're so here we go this amtrak train was on the wrong track it collided into the back of a freight train that happened early on sunday that happened in south carolina killed two amtrak employees injured about one hundred people you know this is the third wreck with amtrak in less than two months and i gotta tell you somebody who's going back east here in a couple of months and i would normally get on amtrak and this isn't a paranoid thing but what is going on i mean obviously accidents happen but it's sure seems like a lot of them are adding up so i can't i can't wait to see what they say what caused that to be on the wrong track because clearly that's a huge mistake who who was wrong was it seems like it might have been the the the cia's x training for my understand from an investigator that i talk to that's what he he seemed to think but that's not official the wreck involved this this train heading from new york miami and happened at two thirty in the 235 the morning and it's about ten miles south of columbia into there's a lot of people listening to us in that area so you certainly know that that word spread quickly they're even in the middle of the night will call it early in the morning and yeah it was it's bad for the national transportation safety board is saying the critical question that they're looking into his why tracks which is in the crash area were locked in lines that took the it took the amtrak train off the main track where it's smashed into that other train can you imagine what that collision must have felt like how fast they were going when they slammed into each other you see the wreckage it's horrific i mean it's horrific when you look at the it i'm surprised more people weren't killed it goes back to that same thing again what they're trying to find out there looking for the the data recorders from both trains because the recorders would show whether the amtrak.

"Just a horrible amtrak train derailment today uh killing right now looks like eight people dead scores more injured when an amtrak train uh and and this is sad on its inaugural trip on a new route d derailed south of seattle uh this morning while cross seen a bridge on a above a very busy highway officials said that at least thirteen cars jumped the tracks at least thirteen amtrak train cars jumped the tracks and fell down on the highway below right now the again the reported derailment has killed i've got eight people um with a total of seventy seven people sent to local hospitals in washington state just south of seattle earlier this morning thoughts and prayers with all the victims thoughts and prayers with all those hurt and all those who perished devastating this was it's inaugural trip on this new route this amtrak train i look i am i'm a trump tweeted out you we gotta do some more butter infrastructure i tweeted out that we've got to do something about amtrak this is a government entity uh that needs to be reformed in needs to be privatized this is not the time talk about any of that but i'll tell you what an and what happened in atlanta yesterday for me this is devastating you're talking about eight people killed seventy seven people sent to the hospital but in atlanta yesterday the atlanta airport the busiest airport in the country just completely in the dark all power out down for twelve hours scary stuff and it it it reminds all of us as it should that look this is a this is a scary dangerous world in which we live i'm frequently reminded of that you've got who is well we've got all these advances in technology all these advances in transportation we've become so dependent upon all these advances in technology and transportation when they go down if like were helpless you read some of the reports of those people stranded in that atlanta airport in the dark without any food people couldn't go to the bathroom the bathrooms were pitch black a reminder of how dependent we've become i'm tecnology i'm the modern conveniences of life just just imagine finding yourself stranded at an airport for twelve hours in the dark.

"Amtrak it will provide recommendations to the first responding that worked this incident old two all with the intent of um uh minimizing the occurrence of these types of incidents moving forward but certainly um things like positive train control things like you know was the engineer distracted um is our their recommendations as to how many hours of work somebody should have when are operating a train all of that will be looked into with recommendations a you know that a company of course my car has a see both shoulder harnesses they have to have a although i had in my head a year look real close but i've got a scar right in my eyebrow ridge that has the exact shape of an mg be hornrimmed back in an era when they were not mandatory at a seatbelt when my car slid off a road but no shoulder harnesses and so v seatbelt two held maya pelvis in place where my upper body slammed into that steering column on an airplane of course you do have the seat belts and i don't remember i've written a lot of amtrak train that remember ever having even so much as a seatbelt much less a shoulder harnesses it time for that i do think so you're correct that there are no seat belts on the amtrak trains or mass transit trans um and one of the findings from the philadelphia derailment in 2015 that i was involved in is that you know many of the injuries were due to passengers being um you know quite literally tossed around in the cars as they kind of careers that they careened off their track and so stabilising them much like we do in an airplane or in a automobile i'm could prevent some of some of the injuries a general is types of things that you have looked into you've looked into.

"You when a unit commercial break you when i got the talking for some reason we got on amtrak yeah i think you've got some news and out you've been talking to amtrak above making a stop at the airport station yes so uh as a matter of fact a during last year uh we and amtrak uh got together did a study on uh adding a another rail uh in that area and expanding that facility so that amtrak could bake more frequent stops at that at that facility it doesn't make any stops now the airport mm no amtrak mcnall stopped at the airport but that was the original version of the plasco right i remember on the governor hamad i covered the news conference right we're going to build a train station at the airport amtrak is going to stop there may be and it's going to be great trained to the plane and at up the bought a you saying this is going to happen there very interested and and now taking it to the next step and beginning to get a preliminary engineering and estimates for that uh and we'll be doing that with them during the next year or elhamy press you a little bit is this going to happen is amtrak going to make a stop at that airport station said very significant so they're they're willing to do it and we're willing to do it there were no way to take as i said the first step in that process usually as you as you get when you have two parties that are agreeing to something and you take the first step it usually ends up happening things in the railroad into st do not happen as quickly as we can make them happen on a on a road or a bridge but were were taking that initial step and we both agreed to the way to do it okay study determined that there is a way to do it they'll just hold on there be a little late that they'll happened but this is very significant because if you get amtrak to staff at that airport yes uh commuters could then go over there parking garage jump on an amtrak faster trained get up the boston right and they do that the washington dc area they allow for commuters to rotterdam jeter this is very significant and amtrak stopped there are you saying.

"The empire built her for example which goes from chicago to seattle a lot of those trips are minneapolis to uh wolf point montana places like that you're not going to fly you're not able to fly on there's no bus service so if you live in wolf point you need to get to the nearest big city will guess what you're going to do and then you get on amtrak uh and so that's really the utility of longdistance route let's talk about those other other tell the by the way my guest is jim matthews his presidency of the national association railroad passengers works to build coalitions with amtrak us government the public to support amtrak the one of the big things in the in the proposed white house budget is dropping of service to a a unusually large number of small and mediumsize cities what is the thinking behind that well you know it it partly animated by on some very a long standing um uh conservative opposition to the the entire idea of longdistance passenger rail on the phone with philosophical um but then it also animated by this this really this myth that while longdistance routes lose money and north quarter make money so we'll saved the part that make money and we'll get rid of the rest um but the mit and if you strip the man look the matthew figure out that the admit it over the the with you're talking about really wouldn't help anything it's two hundred and twentyfive community that would lose their service heartened forty million americans would lose their access to amtrak if you if they went through on and with warm and the now departing ceo amtrak um recently said that if you were to cut these route bar from saving money it would cost the amtrak four hundred twenty three million dollars in additional cost to shuttered all down so you'd be eliminating uh most of the the network and you'd be paying more for less service so i i don't see how that makes much sense in any way other than at sort of political way does amtrak have other friends on capitol hill for amtrak of the.
