Show Notes Tips from Tech-Minded Podcasters

"First thing, the big news for those of us in the podcast industry in a lot of podcasters out there is podcasts movement. In Dallas, has been canceled surprise surprise. It's kind of been the theme all this year. You know all these big events getting canceled or push back and then canceled and that's what happened here. They pushed it from August to October and then decided to go virtual. So, they're going to be going virtual. If you applied to speak at podcast movement by the way you're going to have to reapply if you WANNA speak virtually at the virtual event. That's I believe October nineteenth yeah, Eighteen, th through the twenty nineth, so they're going to kind of spread it out over ten days, so at shouldn't a burden, too many people with having to take a lot of time off from work. That'll be good. Yeah I was surprised when I saw how long the virtual event is going to go for, but I do think that's good, because most of us including me. I don't really WANNA. Sit on a you know virtual video conference type thing for you know more than. Probably a few hours a day, so spreading it out will make it easier. I think for most people oh. Yeah for sure, and you know I kind of saw this coming of if you notice all of the little, meet upset. podcast movements been having online every time they do it. They use a different technology. So I think they were just testing out the technology to figure out what they want to do for the the virtual full events so. It'll be interesting to see how it all works out I. Hope I hope it goes well. I know podcast is doing one in August. that's all virtual online, so we'll see how these big conferences work in the virtual world. It really is kind of a brave new world for all of US years. We try to figure out. How to do all these things in the wake of a pandemic, it's It's all new stuff. Oh Yeah I. Think L. for the most part. We're getting through it and getting. Getting. Things done that have to be done. You know that are not related directly to the pandemic or all that so. I think I. Think it's good that it's online this year. I, you know I really hope that things get back to where we can get back in person because I haven't traveled since October which is amazing for me usually. I'm on the road. So Anyway Twenty twenty one. They've already scheduled the podcast movement twenty twenty, one for Nashville Tennessee so. That'll be a new venue for them. Usually they're in bigger cities and guess. Nashville is pretty big, but I. don't know I guess I wouldn't mind checking out Nashville. Yeah. It's an interesting location. I. I know, didn't There was another you know media convention was it's The religious broadcasters association I think that Yeah usually habits meetings in Tennessee. Yeah, and RB National Religious Broadcasters. They usually have there's in Tennessee. They had it out in Anaheim one year. But for the most part it's at the same venue. In Nashville, so I know Mackenzie Angelo and todd have all been to that venue for that show, so they'll be familiar with it. Yeah Yeah it's It's an interesting choice. I like that you know podcast movement has. Tried through its history different locations I. think it's good for everybody because you know, it's a travel under abnormal conditions you know is different for everybody. Some people can afford to go farther and if you have it in a different location. If, people want to drive in. They can or whatever the case is, so it's nice that they've. They've tried to have it in different places over the years. Oh, yeah, when they hit Chicago a I drove. Most of the way in took Amtrak in so that was Kinda cool. Nashville kind of on the outside of my one day drive. Limit so we'll see. You know. Who knows. If, I drive it or fly it or Maybe, I'll find a train that goes that way. I don't know we'll see but I kind of look forward to that Rate. Stood, we have here in the news folder. According to macrumors and many many other sources spotify is introducing their video podcasts for more shows. And I know James Crillon over at Pod News. Dot Net was asking them. You know how. How is that GONNA work is to be are astronaut. turns out that no some sort of proprietary. Thing, so basically you have to upload the video right at spotify, and it only goes to spotify, so it's not like a full video podcast, and if you have a video podcast, that is a full normal, RSS, based video podcast still won't work on spotify.

The Limits and Possibilities of Journalism

"There's a convention in the world fiction known as the unreliable narrator, a character whose very much part of the story they're telling, and therefore, whose account cannot always be taken at face value because we know, they have interests at stake. It's a concept. One could fruitfully apply to journalism where interests and stakes like gender race, diginity or colonialism are rarely, if ever apparent and the reporting of news be that to audiences are even to reporters themselves. Would making those things explicit? Therefore make journalism unreliable given its long-standing complicity with the dominant social order. Maybe the better question to ask is how journalism can best grapple with its innate limitations. And yet as we see in the subtitle of Collison in Young's book, the possibilities of journalism also abound alternatives they argue have been largely generated outside the walls of mainstream outlets. Candice in Maryland. Thanks for sticking around for part two of this conversation. Amtrak at the pleasure to be here. Thanks for having us. Yeah, thanks for having us. Yeah, yeah, well. Thanks for indulging me here in having this extended conversation. I do WanNa get to what can be done to repair remediate reform. Rehabilitate retrofit I. Don't know I don't know what the right word is. You'll tell me, but I still have some other questions to get into and as you know candice I'm want to ask odd questions, and so why stop now so? Let me, ask you. Candice is racism fact. Or Not An I'll tell you why ask because every time I. See it. It's slapped inside quotation marks whenever it's reported on as if it was opinion, not fact. Is Racism factor not and if it's treated as if it isn't how telling, is that on the part of those who do so and such an interesting question points observation about journalism. That e racism ends up being a claim that make as opposed to an observable experience documented. You know with much precision increasingly over the last you know I don't know century. Really it, but it comes back to you know. We talked a little bit about the National Geographic. Apology right they needed a historian to go through all of their coverage and say actually was racist. At documented. Analytical opinion from somebody who had gone through gone through all of their reporting. When in fact, right? I mean one of the interesting points. They actually make in the story that they do on themselves. Is that at time when they were reporting on the crowning of a King Ethiopia? Black. Men and women in the United States could not actually get into a an a lecture at national. Geographic place because everything was segregated still at that time right so. You know it's the same thing with objectivity. If you think about the way that the history of journalism has been told, we talk about the rise of objectivity, and how it emerged in the nineteen twenties, we'll in the nineteen twenties who had the vote who was able to fully participate in democracy? When you start asking those kinds of questions, it becomes untenable that the way that journalism has perceived itself as recording a story that gets better over time when you know the experience of many minority, visible minority populations marginalized populations. Indigenous populations have. Definitely had a really uneven experience with democracy with colonialism, and you know, have often suffered, and not have their stories told in anything like mainstream news, in fact, in most cases at least when it comes to indigenous people. We've had to start our own. Our own media right? If you look at the way that media has evolved e- you see the way that indigenous people have taken it up at every single turn including when it came to to digital media

S. stores this week though more than half the outlets will offer curbside service only and move move a lot of talk about the CEO of JP Morgan chase was cautiously upbeat Jamie Dimon says he sees in his words pretty good odds of a fast economic rebound in the third quarter so look the best yeah let's talk about you know every kind of business it's moving people from one place I mean we're talking planes trains and especially Amtrak right now yeah experts filed for bankruptcy late last week and yes now Amtrak is preparing to slash its workforce by as much as twenty percent even as it prepares to add back some roots CEO bill Flynn sent an internal memo to employees saying ridership and ticket revenue have declined by ninety five percent yes whoa ninety five ninety five percent wow okay let's talk about let's try to do something that's more positive how bout this Walmart partnering with thread up yeah this is interesting at the thread up if you're not familiar with them as a company that sells second hand clothing online the resale clothing market has been growing a lot in recent months and years even though the giant retailer is looking for ways to diversify its these commerce business beyond groceries and consumer staples a Walmart dot com will offer used women's and children's clothing as well as accessories handbags and footwear nearly a three quarters of a million products and all all right let's get down to the last story is that this pandemic expected to have some long lasting financial impact on just about almost everybody right you you started out talking about you're asking about four oh one K. plans and Bankrate dot com's done a survey and says thirty one million recently unemployed adults with retirement savings have tapped those savings are planned to do so very soon nearly a fifth of working a recently unemployed adults work ours say they're contributing less now to their retirement accounts than they were prior to the pandemic and that's mainly because of lost income or the need to keep more cash on hand to cover additional expenses some people say they're helping of relatives who are out of work that happens a lot well yeah I I don't think I know I don't think that there's one person within my acquaintance that has not somehow had to financially juggled either helping somebody else out in their family or with you know it within their own household I mean everybody's been touched by this if we can just hope for a quick turnaround you know some some people are very hopeful but there there are naysayers as well so keeping our fingers crossed and and hoping the optimistic people are right yeah all right Jeff Ballenger from Bloomberg thank you so much Jeff okay have a good

At coronavirus checkpoints, N.Y. drivers being pulled off I-95

"I've heard these rumors you know every time there's a crisis there rumors about the over reaching arm of the federal government or the National Guard to the secret police I guess the latest rumor was that hi ninety five may be shut down at certain places to prevent new Yorkers in particular from escaping New York and spreading the virus to other places is there any indication that that's actually happened when the Hey good morning John you know that you're absolutely right on the money really is it cost for a long time when you have a lot of residents who have family for example in other states and are worried they're not going to be able to get there because they're going to be stopped either at a designated checkpoints as you mention that supposedly was created on interstate ninety five or at least that was in the works all buy random stocks of three groups are up in Rhode Island if somebody had to do your weight yes it's during times like these that governments have that untenable balancing of the equities if you well where they have to take into account people desiring blight to travel versus public safety concerns and because New York is a hot spot right now this is one of the many efforts being taken around the country to try to contain the spread what's actually happened in our afternoon host Jeff Katz brought up a couple of days ago when I was listening to him about how the bosses are still arriving in Richmond from northern destinations of the Amtrak trains are still running presumably there are people moving here what has happened and what does the law allow or restrict government from doing great great two part question re with respect to the first part what is happening there is a disconnect between what you see or read on the news and what is happening in reality how do we know that there are slight apps that you can download that will show you that despite all the restrictions claiming no one's traveling there aren't swept all the major airlines trip traversing the country every day Seoul to with these check points that we read about being created on difference interstate I read the same reports that you have yeah I know people over there who have told me on the phone things are very different and it's because the situation is shifting with respect to the neat so if any of our listeners are planning travel the very first place to go is online on the phone however you need to figure out what is really in place where you're going and lots of apps for that if you will your question is also interesting what can the government do how much can they legally do that a federal government can do a lot that's the short answer but here's the problem if there's a concern that citizens have that maybe what their local governments are doing is legal the goal is not to end and the result is not going to be good if you decide well I'm just not going to comply because I don't think it's lawful obviously the remedy is to complain that the challenge it later now that doesn't help people for example trying to get the wellpoint center faced with roadblocks in this type of thing but the goal is always to try to figure out how to best weather the storm while still maintaining the ability to challenge what we think are unconstitutional the short answer to all of this John in times of crisis the government is able to do more to rein on it it would probably be able to get away with we're tired good work we're beginning of the year I think that they would have less leeway than they do

Jeff VanEvery (Cayuga) Part 3

"Steig. Good Day. Welcome my friends to the storyteller where you'll find first nations people from across native North America who are following Jesus Christ without reservation today. We'll hear more from Jeff van every and upper key. Yuga from the six nations as he shares. How thankful he is that God saved him and turned his life around. When I went to alter I said okay. Let's let's do it. I believe I believe you're GonNa do that for me. And and to accept it together me and my wife together to alter his is China is kind of about rare. We got saved together because we both realized we both realized the mistakes that we made in that. We need to do this together. We need to do. And that's where it starts when you realize and you feel it in your heart and you're getting no strings pulp and you say wow. This is what I'm going to do because I believe I thought I believe in all this other stuff while look got me. You know the benefit to a of going to the altar and standing there before Christ standing there knowing that you are standing before the creator vomit can of heaven and earth and saying. Listen I believe in you. I'm GONNA follow you. I understand that you you guide you were buried in the third day you were raised. And that's what I stained by was a life changing experience because I remember standing there with her and Just feeling just feeling totally relieved and tears coming down my mic. Cheech and tears were flowing down her cheeks and after that it was it was just somethin'. Guide is forgiven. Me and and this is what it means to me the difference between Heaven and Hell because the things that I was doing I was heading straight for hell but now the things that I do. I know I'm still going to heaven. I'm still I'm still on my way and I'm GonNa make mistakes. And when people come to mandate Lower Tinker what you're doing you think you`re. I remember when you were out. That's fine. That's fine. They used to bother me at the beginning. But it doesn't bother manny more but I tell them look what Jesus did for me. Look what he'll do for you and God told me that he says you know it's not you that they hate it's me it's in you so you're going to he says you're GONNA be persecuted for my namesake because of who you serve. We still still continue to go to church and restore I started reading their bibles together and praying together. He's out things that we we never experienced because we never knew 'cause her background was You know you go to church. And her parents basically left it up to them to go to church and you went to Church on Holidays Easter Christmas or things along that line but You know after that things just started to change. We didn't even have vehicle. Didn't have no transportation and one day. My sister-in-law came up because she had seen changes in our lives and she She handed me a set of keys and said here. I have a van and undergrads. There you go get a choice and I said well how long's have been sitting there. And she says while at it's been down there about a year but Yours if you want it so I was pretty excited so we got a ride down there. I think she even took us down there and went there and I put the key in there and he pumped gas a little bit and that thing fared right up. My wife got a job at a at an egg farm and It was out away from from where we left but it just starts providing providing the things that that he knows that you need in order to survive and now realizing this word he said I will provide for you because if I can provide for all the other animals and birds and different things that live among us he says are two more important to me than than and I supply for them. So you know but these are things that issue as you learn and has you walk with Christ at. He starts teaching you on showing you yet. It's been past few years there have been several deadly crashes on Amtrak routes two years ago Amtrak brought in an outsider to fix these problems his name is Richard Anderson the former CEO of Delta airlines since he took over Anderson has been making a lot of changes and also a lot of enemies today on the show Ken Richard Anderson Make Amtrak relevant to the future of American Transportation welcome to the journal our show about money business and power I'm Caitlyn Bob I'm Ryan Knutson it's Tuesday October Fifteenth so tell me about who Richard Anderson is what's his around most famously he was the CEO of Delta Airlines for nine years he is a tough boss Ted man as a reporter based in Washington DC running delta he was famously and or infamously one of the more hard headed airline CEO's really of his generation how so in taking over Delta he was taking over an airline emerging from bankruptcy he turned them into a very profitable airline and he was really willing to part company with other airline executives at one point Delta quit the airline trade group over a policy disagreement he just sort of a guy who has been seen appears as willing to Zig zagged and a guy who's totally unapologetic about it if he felt it was the right decision and this is exactly why Anders it was called to head up Amtrak what I think a lot of people involved in the railroad would acknowledge was just a kind of organizational dysfunction when they went out to look for a CEO to run this railroad they went looking for someone who was gonNA knock some Ed's together and put a charge through the company and get it looking better so why do you think he decided to take on a job at a challenging operation like Amtrak it's a really good question I think the guy was in the mood for a challenge he's been on the hill a lot since he started Amtrak and usually finds a way to work into his testimony the fact that he doesn't get paid need to run Amtrak he doesn't get paid to run Amtrak doesn't get paid there's GonNa be no ability on the part of workers to say Richard Anderson is eliminating these jobs while he's making X. number of dollars a year that line is not available to people who disagree with this decision there are a lot of people who disagree with some of the things Anderson is doing to change Amtrak one of his fights about how to make train safer there've been several major accidents in recent years in two thousand fifteen an accident in Philadelphia killed eight people and another in two thousand seventeen in Washington state killed three hundreds of people have been injured Anderson thinks these crashes could have been prevented with more automation and train cars pilots increasing I use automation to fly planes in Anderson wants to put similar technology in trains the most shocking thing to anyone who is coming from aviation into railroading is the amount to which safety still relies on one human being in railroads if I'm an engineer and I drive a train from New York to Philadelphia I am required to Eddie and memorize the route what the landmarks are that I'd be passing knowing that if I pass this factory building on the right hand side of the tracks that I am x number of meters away from zone I have to slow down or speed up wow that sounds like it takes an enormous amount of memorization it's total reliance on the human brain a system of rules and we know that the brain will let us down from time to time and you have in the case of an Amtrak train hundreds of souls riding on that so if he wants to do a very aviation style safety approach on the train and in particular wants to bring screens into the locomotive cab so that you would have a sort of a heads up display in a moving map that would show the engineer where he is at all times and that is completely anathema a two railroad tradition why would there be any opposition to this idea well the fear of distraction among engineers themselves the engineers union and the safety regulators has always said no screens whatsoever no way and probably the most serious rule other than you cannot be drunk or on drugs when driving a train is you cannot have your phone on because the chance of distraction is so great so that's a big fight that he's having Anderson faced another fight after he took on an issue that nobody disagrees with trains being on time one of the reasons Anderson says trains are often late is because of hobbyists people who restore old train cars and attach them to the back of Amtrak peak railroad car from the head of the Pennsylvania Railroad and can afford to store it somewhere the way it worked for decades was we could hook that onto the back of an Amtrak Regional in his trying to provide is modern efficient twenty-first-century transportation and importantly profitable but how do you turn around a company.

"That's just not as many and our prices for tickets on Amtrak on long long-term trains. I know these are never short runs, but on the east coast, for example. But our tickets priced like airline tickets are with as as the number of seats or places or romance get sold the prices on the remaining ones, go up. Honestly, not actually sure I believe so yes, okay. It's a standard, Sandra. And. What how would you describe the facilities because you're always we're always reading our newspapers Amtrak's quench? In the budget and congresswoman give it enough money to do certain things to speed up the tracks and improve the cars. But what grade would you give to the status of these cars on these long distance trips for quality cleanliness sophistication wifi that sort of thing? Yeah. I think it's a much different experience. When a lot of the feedback. We're getting is, you know, our planes are sort of plugged in. And you're sort of on your own a lot of people have these train trips and actually communicating with different passengers, it's a lot more of a community experience. I'm so it's a lot different in terms of you know, the experiences and what you're doing. I'm going to do a lot of time to kinda like look at the US breast, and I think that's really important this holiday season. But I'm asking a little bit about the quality of the cars in the seats. And so on I mean, these are the trains shipshape, I guess that's the way to put it. If you don't mind me mixing. We keep them. You know, we keep them clean and shipping the shiny. Also, we, you know, there's a lot of space there too. Which is really nice no question about Libya Irvine is superior manager for Amtrak. You can find more details at Amtrak dot com. And she tells us that there are still some valuable reservations for even this this holiday season. I would imagine like airlines at the beginning of January is sort of a slower time. And if you have the luxury travel, you can do it. Correct. Correct. Yeah. So that that would be the off season as it were in early January. So keep that in mind in your travel plans via thank you very much for joining us. I'm a big supporter of Amtrak, and we're always.

"You when a unit commercial break you when i got the talking for some reason we got on amtrak yeah i think you've got some news and out you've been talking to amtrak above making a stop at the airport station yes so uh as a matter of fact a during last year uh we and amtrak uh got together did a study on uh adding a another rail uh in that area and expanding that facility so that amtrak could bake more frequent stops at that at that facility it doesn't make any stops now the airport mm no amtrak mcnall stopped at the airport but that was the original version of the plasco right i remember on the governor hamad i covered the news conference right we're going to build a train station at the airport amtrak is going to stop there may be and it's going to be great trained to the plane and at up the bought a you saying this is going to happen there very interested and and now taking it to the next step and beginning to get a preliminary engineering and estimates for that uh and we'll be doing that with them during the next year or elhamy press you a little bit is this going to happen is amtrak going to make a stop at that airport station said very significant so they're they're willing to do it and we're willing to do it there were no way to take as i said the first step in that process usually as you as you get when you have two parties that are agreeing to something and you take the first step it usually ends up happening things in the railroad into st do not happen as quickly as we can make them happen on a on a road or a bridge but were were taking that initial step and we both agreed to the way to do it okay study determined that there is a way to do it they'll just hold on there be a little late that they'll happened but this is very significant because if you get amtrak to staff at that airport yes uh commuters could then go over there parking garage jump on an amtrak faster trained get up the boston right and they do that the washington dc area they allow for commuters to rotterdam jeter this is very significant and amtrak stopped there are you saying.

"The empire built her for example which goes from chicago to seattle a lot of those trips are minneapolis to uh wolf point montana places like that you're not going to fly you're not able to fly on there's no bus service so if you live in wolf point you need to get to the nearest big city will guess what you're going to do and then you get on amtrak uh and so that's really the utility of longdistance route let's talk about those other other tell the by the way my guest is jim matthews his presidency of the national association railroad passengers works to build coalitions with amtrak us government the public to support amtrak the one of the big things in the in the proposed white house budget is dropping of service to a a unusually large number of small and mediumsize cities what is the thinking behind that well you know it it partly animated by on some very a long standing um uh conservative opposition to the the entire idea of longdistance passenger rail on the phone with philosophical um but then it also animated by this this really this myth that while longdistance routes lose money and north quarter make money so we'll saved the part that make money and we'll get rid of the rest um but the mit and if you strip the man look the matthew figure out that the admit it over the the with you're talking about really wouldn't help anything it's two hundred and twentyfive community that would lose their service heartened forty million americans would lose their access to amtrak if you if they went through on and with warm and the now departing ceo amtrak um recently said that if you were to cut these route bar from saving money it would cost the amtrak four hundred twenty three million dollars in additional cost to shuttered all down so you'd be eliminating uh most of the the network and you'd be paying more for less service so i i don't see how that makes much sense in any way other than at sort of political way does amtrak have other friends on capitol hill for amtrak of the.
