"This woman who has been raped needs to marry a rapist but in that context and actually made a lot more sense because once a woman has been well a woman that has been defiled. If you will it would be very hard for her to marry and most women in this situation would not marry and would probably either become destitute or a prostitute and so this law is actually designed to provide for her because a woman who has been raped and then marries a rapist. He can't divorce her so she would have lifetime financial security away. That friends that haven't gone through a similar tragic experience would not have and then the story i like to talk about. Is the story of amnon. These two david's children and non mar. It's found in two samuel thirteen where tae mar was. David's daughter was very attractive and her half brother. Amnon was very attracted to her ended up trying to seduce her. She said no. He ends up having sex with her raping her tragedy. Really just horrible. But then after this act. He is repulsed by her and tries to kick her out now. This is shocking thing me. She says don't do this. Basically let me stay. And with the implication that they would married and then she says it would be more evil to kick me out then the evil that you've already done so in her. Is the deuteronomy twenty. Two rape law made a lot of sense because it gave her provisions and as it turned out he didn't keep her as his wife and then taymor number. Mary's now she just happened to be the daughter of a of a king so she was provided for but as we look at the context of the ancient context of the biblical context. Some of these laws. It just don't make any sense to us at all are seeing. My god is sexist. Are actually ways. That god is kind of looking out and trying to protect women. The thing i tell people. I chapter the bible tells us that women are made in the image of god and i cannot think of something more positive to say about women that they are created an image of god. And then just look at how jesus treats women gospels. It's amazing a lot of places. Look at these stories where the disciples are kinda confused. And then there's the sire venetian woman or on the women that annoyances feet or the women at the graves. There is a lot of times these women they kind of know what's going on the matter. Confused we gotta keep reading all the bible and you know there's more that could be said but i think as we read the bible and look at the context we see god is amazingly affirming of not just men women as well. Yeah how do you from kind of a broad stroke how you just described and paint. The picture of jesus is really like we understand that we get that we see it so clearly. If you're having a short conversation maybe you were with a college student..

"All right terry are there or could there be any other societal influences niff- the king can take someone else's wife just because he took it into his head he wanted to. How does that affect the other households. If a man saw his neighbor's wife two houses down today oh well she's pretty. The king can get away with it. I can get away with it. It doesn't seem to me that facilitates societal stabilty or safety for the women are men. Because i can't imagine that if my neighbor from down the road came and took me that david would take that very well. Yeah well you're absolutely right. I think this consequence the whole nation. Certainly those consequences of the family as we see it wasn't just absolute. There was amnon and several other incidents abidjan cetera. David sons were a mess from that day. Forward larry has a comment in the chad. The delusion of going down that path at the first step seems exciting yet leaves the participant cold in believing that they need an even bigger jolt on each new encounter yet. The big satisfaction never happens absolutely. But this is what happened with a lot of these things and david keep in mind solomon had a lot of political wives. These were for sign treaties stuff. Most of david's were not most of them. Start with affairs of somewhat like this. This is the most well known one. But david evidently in in the novel about david that was published by reviewing harrelson time ago she sets it up in such a way that david i live in every time does a new captive is broad and she can see david lighting option on l. Not again so david clearly at an issue in this regard rita. I'm just gonna come up as for mcvay slightly different angle. I think not to look even royal household spearheads statement. Intending is part of the culture. Today the so-called groupie culture which is sometimes around like rockstars in athletes actors and so forth and that falls. Loan that line. But let's go read now. What follows after an hour. Just mentioned david himself. We know has tremendous guilt so he paid a heavy price for this. And let's not forget your ira. He's betrayed twice. He's betrayed a soldier and he's betrayed as a husband and both of these are serious breaches of ethics of any kind of governmental order etc. What david has done here is massive and the consequences would be great even apart from any judgments on the part of god that might occur versus six hundred thirteen. So david sent word to joab. Send me your riot. The hittite and joab centura today david. When you're i came to him. David asked how joab and the people fared and how the war was going then. 4 Absurdly Easy Things I Do That Make Life Disproportionately Better by David Cain
"Absurdly easy things. I do that. Make life disproportionately better by david. Cain of wrapped a to dot com. Lots of the things. We spend our energy on our worthwhile but some are a better deal than others. The benefits of my weight routine for example are worth much more than the effort takes. But that effort is still pretty significant. You have to lift a two hundred pound barbell quite a few times for anything. Good to happen. There are few things. I do and sometimes still failed to do that. Take almost no effort. And somehow make my life significantly better. As far as i can tell these four small things are the best deal going number one shining the sink before bed. I don't know where. Or when but i remember reading about someone who swore that her habit of her saint before bed was the linchpin of productivity and wellbeing. I have tried. It and ken corroborate her ridiculous claim. Readers have since pointed out that this is from the fly lady making your morning coffee beside a shiny sink is empowering self affirming experience main coffee beside a dull sink containing even a single dirty fork sitting in a puddle is comparatively draining and dehumanizing at a stray bloated noodle or two and it becomes strangely life. Destroy in my experience. One of two different people emerged from that coffee making process depending on the condition of the sink. One of them is sharp and ready for life. The other must fight his way to his desk from under some great -sential wait some grimy psychic debris that's inseparable from the maroon super amnon that greeted him this morning. The sun is his enemy not as ally in all his work will be up hill today. Different things probably need different techniques minus stainless steel. I use one of those magic white pass with a bit of comment and water. Wipe down the rim. Many chrome fixtures with spray in a dry cloth takes forty seconds. Might change your life number two going outside with absolutely no plan. At some point. In my adult life i developed a strange seemingly self-defeating habit at the supermarket i wouldn't bother crossing the store to get the last item on my list. Part of me knew that leaving that one thing that would make a necessary to walk six blocks to the corner store the next day. This is my sub-conscious screaming for help. The quiet wise part of my mind sabotaged my efficient supermarket routine in order to create an excuse to travel somewhere by foot. I now see our walking as an essential nutrient. It should require an excuse. Will we need to excuse ourselves from the kind of perverse post industrial arrangement where it is even possible to spend a whole day without traveling any significant distance outside on foot fresh air and bodily movement or always healthy of course but to get the full disproportionately worthwhile benefits of neighborhood. Walking is essential that you don't know where you're going if you have a destination or even a regular walking routine then you risk making the walking itself into a task something to be done with rather than something to do when i step out of the building. I don't know if i'm going to turn left or right until i'm doing it. I've gone on hundreds of these destination less walks and a regular route as not emerged. It turns out my body knows how to create a closed pauley on without my mind having to think about it. There's something life-affirming about any enterprise in which you rely on moment to moment intuition instead of planning and it's just a walks you can't muck anything up too badly at every corner. You just turn whichever way you feel like or maybe continue straight ahead. Let your feet aside. You'll end up at home somehow number three sitting on the floor and doing nothing for a little while blaise. Pascal famously said that all human miseries arise from our inability to do this. I think it's really just an unwillingness. He's right about the arising miseries though not knowing how to deliberately do nothing his crippling disease that leads to bizarre self-defeating phenomena like workaholic cigarette. Smoking ru smartphone. Behavior eventually worn. Pestle is sitting on the floor and doing nothing isn't exactly difficult but it feels very foreign at first. We are so attuned to being constantly doing acting evaluating and improving the to fully. Stop in this way feels almost as radical as your ignition at a red light and putting your feet up although it's a lot less disruptive to society.

And I realized that you know what she did the best that she could, but she was very appreciative. And that's why we were able to endure. That time. The world doesn't stop. It doesn't stop for us. The world will change and we have to change with it. But that never changes, and this is the ultimate life lesson than gain from my mother. was that you treat others as you would have them to treat you. Long FEared Hong Kong Climactic Conclusion Delayed, For Now
"Will start in Hong Kong where the long feared climactic confrontation between protesters and security forces. Seems seems again to have not quite happened. A standoff is ongoing between police and protesters who have occupied Hong Kong Polytechnic University. This particular kill a battle has been one of the most violent of the demonstrations which have beset Hong Kong for the lost several months. Protesters have deployed Molotov cocktails and bows and arrows. Rose against police who responded with tear gas and rubber bullets Stephen. We'll start with the eternal question here. The rapidly becoming eternal question which is is Beijing prepared to wait this out for ever if necessary. I doubt it Now I'm old enough to remember. What Hamden Amnon Tenement Square in nine hundred ninety nine but actually to have been Work I wasn't there but I mean I was working at. The BBC is covering what was happening elsewhere in eastern Europe when we kept close eye on that as well on I remember saying to someone on the third of June nineteen thousand nine. You know this could all end in tears. And of course it was on the night of the third fourth that they sent in the troops Given the kind of system come a communist China has I can't see that they can allow this to go on and and I can see a gradual buildup And the fact that you know the police seemed to have been allowed to act without any any comeback at all I mean there there's been filmed. They don't seem to be worried about in a film was being shot at very point blank range of protesters protesters being beaten. And so they they. They seem to have no No worries about this at all is if there's not gonna be any comeback on them and that suggests a build up to to a point where China may well turn around and say. Well we don't care what the rest of the world says. Hong Kong is part of China and We're GONNA keep it that way. And in which case they could send in troops so I think there is still a buildup guy on I find it very worrying Terry on that subject of the apparent Abandoned with which Hong Kong police are increasingly acting and Steven is quite quite right too pointed out that they they are getting increasingly rough and increasingly indiscriminate and there doesn't appear to be the official restraint on that but to what extent do we overlook the human factor in a situation like this is not to excuse the behavior of Hong Kong police or indeed any police when they exact outside they remitted it but these are people now who are physically and psychologically exhausted. Yes I think if you see reports from in particular the impact on on these students who trapped inside the university tear gas water cannon. You know that it's not it's thirty eight. People were wounded over during Sunday night. So you know lots of people and then you hear from people trying to get the word out there saying yeah exactly that they all. They are exhausted and they've even been some really worrying comments with student saying look. We're we're we're prepared to give our lives in this cause And you know obviously nobody wants that to happen. But you think the you know the more and more that's The protesters feel will literally. They are literally under-siege The the less and less likely they are to to want to stand down and there seems to be no kind of process I mean they put demands food. What they wanted to there seems to be no kind of negotiation and in the meantime in Hong Kong is being is suffering real problems for this? I mean if you look at the economy automate started to contract. The tunnels are closed. Roads are closed. Schools have been closed. And there's even a threat now. The local elections will be cancelled which is probably likely to make the protesters even more cross. Just seem to be situation. That's the is escalating In on the subject of that Esscalation Stephen have we. Are we approaching. Have we past the point. which which often occurs in similar situations at which the the violent starts to feed on itself everybody on both sides kind of lose track of what the protests were about in the first place and especially in Terry quite rightly points out that people have been injured some seriously that becomes a self perpetuating writing thing once people start to think well people have been hurt in this 'cause therefore the cause must be pursued on the fate it does Also given the the the focus of the protests at the moment is coming from students Always rely on the fact that young people think it you know I can go in and they can say things. I you know. I'm prepared to die for this. And so on because they don't believe they will And and similarly here you've got students and again if I can go back to nine hundred. Eighty United Gentlemen those were student protests. And the students who who thought that you know they don't have such life experience they think life can only be better we let protest and we'll get eh And they don't really understand the I think the threat to themselves even when they see all this violence around them is always going to happen to someone else. Thanked is often an element of that that and so they. I think they don't seem to be backing down on the country. They they are getting more violent and as we say the police too. I mean that their actions are reporting reporting one an interesting point that I noted was that a lot of the police have been heard speaking mandarin to each other. As opposed to Cantonese he's which most people speaking Hong Kong so are these police who've been drafted in from mainland China. which is is that kind of the thin end of a wedge? It reminded me of when the summer when there was big demonstrations in In Moscow which didn't go far this of course but there were big demonstrations and the police acting there were often. It's very difficult to find a policeman in Moscow. The WHO from Moscow. They're normally they come in because they they get a better life living there and so they will do as they're told similarly are these Mainland Chinese police who are now in in Hong Kong or who've been living in Hong Kong like the the the the the system that An prepared to to to to to keep it themselves. So you've got there. They're very high stakes on both sides. Terry we did see after a fashion over the weekend. Chinese soldiers deployed in the streets of Hong Kong. This was people's Liberation Army soldiers leaving their barracks to help clean up. Is that just well. I mean there's a number of ways to look at that. It might just have been soldiers leaving their barracks to help clean up It might have been a warning of further escalated or might have been kind of a PR exercise. Yeah I think I probably I tend towards The second of those that you know that they this is a deliberate. We are reminding you that we are here. I mean remember the earlier on in these protests we saw images from China of troops in a big Football Stadium I think was in those those images were it was kind of a big. You know just so you don't forget we are. We're here and although we're trying to make it look like we're just helping you nicely We don't we don't have to play so nice I would. I would think that that is probably Probably one of the main factor to that. I mean I'm just going back to what we were saying. I think we can't forget. The students are not probably analyzing this in geopolitical terms as the role of China. What's the rest of the world's reaction action going to be? They probably just think that they're in the rights. And you know I think to a large extent they are. They say we would like more democracy. And we don't have people extradited to China. We don't entirely he wants to be Run by China and you know maybe we should give them more of the benefit of the downs. You know in the same way that we did to protesters in whether it was eighty. Nine or Chinaman Square you know th. They may get crushed quite literally by geopolitics. But let's give them a shout.
