Iowa State football trying to navigate the COVID-19 chaos

"Home. NPR's Alison Edward is on a road trip to see several campuses a school year like no other begins. And today she is in Ames, Iowa, Iowa State, Despite all has begun its big 12 college football season. Elissa, thanks for being with us. Good morning. Kick off in a few hours, right? That's right. Yep, it's the opening game of the season. So the issue cyclones are set to play the Louisiana Raging Cajuns. The Spirit team and the marching band will be there. We caught them practicing laissez, all wearing masks. Of course, it won't be. Like other games. There's gonna be no fans in the stadium. Parking lots that are normally full of tailgaters before a game this morning. They're empty. Students told us they're planning on watching the game on TV, at bars, restaurants and in the dorms. Listen, there's been a surge of Corona virus cases in the state. What do we know about that? And the and the numbers, for example, even on the football team that will be playing today. Wait. So this does come at a time when Corona virus cases are among the highest in the nation here in Iowa, and they are testing the football team three times a week. At the end of August, they said. They had a 2.4% positivity rate. So of course, they have to keep that number low in order to play. But here on campus, they have reported they have a 20% positivity, right? And of course, they're not doing mass testing so that number could be much higher.

"NASA is exploring technologies that could grow structures made from fungi to become our future homes in the stars. This is innovation. Now, bringing you stories behind the ideas that shave our future. A team at NASA's Ames Research Center is working to prove that planetary habitats can be fabricated from fungi. Fungi are familiar organisms from mushrooms to mold, but the part of a fungus you may not know are the unseen underground, my Celia, these tiny branching threads network to build complex larger structures with extreme precision. The NASA team envisions a future where a compact habitat built of. Will Covid-19 have a lasting impact on the environment?

"The pandemic hit air travel in the US is down ninety five percent the morning rush hour. Traffic report has become unnecessary. Many of you are asking what impact this is having on the environment. So Lauren. Summer is with us. She covers climate change for NPR. And it's good to have you back. Lauren Hi Ari. Let's start with a question that a lot of listeners have asked this one comes from Walker in Ames Iowa the oil consumption due to know car travel and almost no air travel must be much less. Is this lack of carbon dioxide production low enough to meet the goals of the Paris accord is more than enough just to remind listeners? The goals of the Paris accord that was to keep global temperatures from going up two degrees Celsius with an aim of less than one point five degrees Celsius. What's the impact of this slowdown of the global economy? Lauren yeah so as you might expect is having an effect on global carbon emissions largely because demand for oil and coal has really fallen and this is all over not just the US. So scientists are starting to put out studies projecting. What would this look like by the end of the year? If this activity continues you know we all stay locked down a little bit and they're coming up with maybe an eight percent drop in carbon emissions for this year now okay. That would actually be unprecedented. I know it maybe sounds like a small number. That's bigger than the drops during the last recession or during World War Two. But here's the thing that is about. The level scientists save world needs to be cutting emissions every year until twenty thirty to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. That's you know that one point five degrees Celsius that you mentioned and I think scientists are also pointing out shutting down. The economy is not the way to reach. Those long-term emission cuts right. It's these bigger emissions changes like switching to renewable energy. Okay we got a lot of questions. Also about some of the short-term environmental impacts of the pandemic. This one comes from Lois in Raleigh North Carolina. Beautiful spring filled with crystal clear. Low humidity days here in North Carolina because having fewer cars on the road or the factories closed affect the weather but about the global shut down factories. Might that be affecting the weather. Here I've heard a lot of people wondering about this actually clearer. It is yes in a lot of cities gotten cleaner. People are driving less in some cities. I mean car. Traffic is down forty fifty percent. Planes are not flying either so that's actually helped improve local air quality but it is very important to say. The weather plays a huge role in your local air pollution. So if it rains you know it clears the air and the spring typically is not like the summer. It's not our worst season for air pollution. Other places actually though haven't really seen much of a drop because there are things like factories and refineries that are still emitting and trucks are still on. The Roads. Goods are still being delivered to stores. I understand you've been talking with some scientists who are studying the effect of having so few cars on the road and the what are they trying to understand exactly. Yeah I mean. This is a particular interest in cities that have really problematic air and in those cities. They have to try to figure out. What can we change to improve air quality? I mean this is actually kind of just a real world test of that one. Scientists told me that this would be like if in Los Angeles for example. A third of the cars on the road were switched to all electric cars. They don't burn gasoline. They get electricity and in California. A lot of that comes from solar and renewable. So it's cleaner. We have one listener. Who wants to know whether this pandemic could cause environmental damage? The here's Valerie in Arizona. We hear a lot about the air pollution being reduced but not much about the increased fast action Styrofoam especially in food service. What about the possible negative effects on the environment from the Corona virus? That's a good point. All of these restaurants that have switched to delivery or takeout. That's a lot of plastic. Yeah I think people are seeing a lot more containers. People are also seen masks and plastic gloves kind of thrown on the grounds. The pandemic is affecting our efforts to reduce plastic. Waste for example California. Just put a sixty day pause on. Its plastic bag ban. And that's out of concern for frontline workers right. They're the ones that are handling people's reusable grocery bags when they bring them into the store. Starbucks also is is not refilling those reusable coffee mugs for that same reason. It's about reducing exposure environmental groups. They've been largely supportive of these temporary measures because people's lives are on the line but I think they're keeping a close eye to make sure that these are actually just temporary measures and these larger initiatives to reduce plastic waste comeback at some point

You know they've been largely supportive of these temporary measures because people's lives are on the line but I think they're keeping a close eye to make sure that these are actually temporary measures. Right and these larger initiatives to reduce plastic waste kind of comeback at some point if you have a question for NPR's Lawrence Somerset to us at NPR dot org slash national conversation or on twitter use the HASHTAG NPR conversation and our next listener question comes from Laura Intel Keaton Alaska. What effect is this virus having on? Wildlife? I'm thinking of the fact that there's less people out and about and that means there's more room for wildlife I've seen some photos of a Lotta ducks resting in a parking lot while bores and sheep walking down the street. There's a lot of this on social media. Is it just that were home more? So we see the animals more or the animals actually coming out in places that they didn't ordinarily yeah. I mean that's hard to tell right. A lot of us are kind of just looking out the window. Maybe seeing things we didn't see before but some of it is a hoax. Right on social media you know. Maybe you saw those dolphins that were. They weren't actually there. Yeah I'm sorry about that but this they're actually real effects. Scientists are trying to study. You know I spoke to one wildlife rescue center in California. That said you know right now. It's seal and sea lion pumping season. You know every year some pups are concerned because of human interference like people or maybe dogs getting too close and so they're kind of that this year they merely a reprieve for them because some beaches are closed Another really good example is Wales. There's just less shipping traffic right now. And so. The oceans are less and wheels are very sensitive to sound. It's actually Something scientists after nine eleven because there was also a drop in shipping traffic and scientists could actually measure that stress hormones in right. Whales went down during that time period. Interesting we got a question about what's happening to environmental regulations during the pandemic Mike in Portland writes to the EPA suspended environmental rules so companies. Don't have to follow them any longer. Lauren Bizarre Policy Change while everyone was focused on the disease. Yeah in in March the EPA announced that it would not be finding companies if they failed to report their pollution data during the pandemic so an example of this might be that a refinery is reporting. It's air emissions to make sure that they're complying with Federal Clean Air Laws. The agency said that this needed to happen. Because the pandemic is making it harder for staff to collect the safety data and and do social distancing at the same time environmental groups really push back quite strongly. They felt this was too broad. It sent a message to industries. That maybe they would have the freedom to break environmental laws if no one was really checking during this time period just on our final moments so many of the changes were talking about depend on social distancing when the economy returns to something like normal are the gains. We've seen going to be reversed right so we all are starting to get back in our cars and fly. Go back to work industries ramping. Up You expect these of short-term Games are going to go away. I think there's some hope that the behavioral change though like maybe we'll all work from home it's possible. Npr Science correspondent Lawrence Summer. Thanks for answering these questions tonight. Thanks

"Many organizations NASA has reduced the number of on site staff going into work each day but thanks to remote technologies NASA is moving ahead with everything from space exploration to Earth Science Research and some of that Nasa know-how is being used to help policymakers and medical professionals address pressing science questions. Nasa Jet Propulsion Laboratory is using artificial intelligence to extract current medical data from huge numbers of publications Nastase. Ames Research Center will use its supercomputer to crunch high. Volumes of complex data in shorter amounts of time NASA employees can submit ideas for solutions relevant to the pandemic via an internal crowd sourcing website and biology research data continues to roll in from the International Space Station from managing missions to conducting research. Lessons Learned From The Iowa Caucuses, And Danger Signs Ahead

"I'm encouraging everyone to get out and give a separate the clapper Joe Biden I don't know the results and I with the I know we got rolled over last night he lost the lot he lost third fourth or fifth place we'll figure it out in the course of the day I'm joined by Byron York of the Washington examiner to talk about three things is state of the union tonight the impeachment acquittal tomorrow and the Iowa fiasco last like good morning Byron good morning June which order and were you up all night no I wasn't actually I actually I will I will tell you on our caucus story which is as you know there are a few journalists here in the morning and and all all of them were covering the democratic caucuses so I thought to myself I get here on Thursday in time to go to the president's rally it was clear the president I had a pretty large operation in Iowa and it was not because he was terrified of Joe Walsh or bill weld it was because he was trying to win the general election to get it in the bag while Democrats were still struggling to find their candidate now we didn't know how much how struggling they work so what I did was I went to a Republican caucus last night in Ames Iowa but forty minutes north of the mind and if they did this radical they voted once they counted the votes and I reported the results all my gosh you're kidding me and so it what was interesting you know AT and another thing I did years I I also went to a campaign event from Joe walls the former Republican congressman who is challenging the president does want to see how how this worked out and I don't know if you've seen the results but statewide from one ninety seven point one nine percent of the vote and walls one one point zero eight percent and bill weld on last year's governor one one point two seven percent so so Joe bill Burr Joe beat Bill Joe Walsh rebel our world no no no no bill weld bead Walsall world world up one point two seven percent to Walsh's one point zero eight percent that's got a first test for never come Republican challenges and it did not go well that's got a thing to lose to Bill well I'm sorry Joe Joe used to be on the Salem radio network and and it and so sorry Joe our condolences Byron let's talk a little bit about the hunter gatherer aspect of the trump campaign when it comes to data because I believe that's what the rallies are about I believe that with the caucuses were about the president's gathering that you attended on Tuesday night they are looking for the data they are and and they're also looking to make an impression the for people who might not remember in nineteen eighty four in February of nineteen eighty four Ronald Reagan as president he's headed to a huge reelection he certainly has no we nomination worries and he comes to the moment and that's the point in Waterloo used to rallies on caucus day when the Democrats are trying to choose their candidate and the Democrats are outraged the service is done it is not worthy of a president but Reagan did it and he really kind of took some of the oxygen out of the room for Democrats now Jeff Kaufmann who is the chairman of the Republican Party here and I was set back in June he told president trump about this and you know Mister president and Ronald Reagan did this in the end if growth Democrats not now I think other people probably recommend this as well but sure no problem was here and got in about seven to eight thousand people it great university and would that was far greater than any other Democrat in the event that any Democrat had plus trump brought a long list of circuits his his family cabinet members members of Congress Republican governors I was that the the caucus where Donald Trump junior spoke and they stepped up their social media and as you say they got all the information everybody came to the rally and then of course you have the information for value comes to the to the caucus and by the way they registered to vote a bunch of new people last night as well now they will move on I think yeah election effort but I think that circus will move on to New Hampshire even as the zombie campaign of Biden struggles forward the president tweeted thirty seven minutes ago by right New York the democratic caucus is an unmitigated disaster nothing works just like they ran the country remember the five billion dollars obamacare website that should have cost two percent of that the only person that can claim a very big victory in Iowa last night is quote trump close quote I don't think the president's going to allow this to pass I'm remarked upon all day long any may even bring up the state of the union Byron York I would think I would think and and by the way it it does appear that that vice president Biden did not do so well and I did go to his last event in here in deadline before the caucus and I will I will say though just a few things one the the questions about whether he has the vigor required for a long hard campaign those are really open questions that really he's not a high energy campaigner at this point he brought circuit like Chris Dodd and John Kerry which really gave the impression that he is a man of the past not really electrify anybody from the stage with use the most important thing was really interesting you spoke for more than twenty minutes and did not mention any of the Democrats most important issues no healthcare no climate change no gun violence no tops Isshin it was really extraordinary all he talked about without terrible crumple as any displayed no vision for the future beyond bringing things back to how they were when Joe Biden was in office so I you know I think a lot of Democrats look at that campaign is that this is just not working and when we do finally get results from last night we'll probably gonna see that the team by noon put out at five hours ago by bill Russo any campaign saying they wanted putting out in completing numbers is contributing to the chaos and misinformation they would like very much to move on before a fourth or fifth place finish is finalized I don't think they can escape that Byron but let's turn to impeachment I believe there will be an acquittal I don't know if it will be bipartisan do you have any reporting on that I don't I do not have any insight I I do know that efforts to try to censure the president I think you're completely doomed if you remember in nineteen ninety eight there were some Democrats in the Clinton impeachment nine nine or some Democrats who wanted to censure the president and not not impeach him but house Republicans went ahead and impeach the president of course they had a trial and a lot of Democrats who waited he's just been impeached and he had a trial that's a pretty big censure right there so I do not see any Republicans in the Republican supporting the center specially wanted strongly worded as Joe mentioned was circulating yesterday now I also want to make sure I get your reaction Byron I begin the program by saying lord bless and keep Rush Limbaugh I'm a prank I don't know if you are but he the ease the fellow who built the talk radio mall I just got a I'm a tenant like everyone else is I got Nordstrom in that

"And rubber joins us now from the state of Iowa Brian tell us where you are where you've been and where you're going so president trump balding a rally Thursday nights at Pete booted judge on Friday Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders Saturday Joe Biden on Sunday and of course all of these democratic candidates continue to criss cross the area so and they will be popping up all over the place although I do want to point out that with the impeachment proceedings obviously the senators have not been there clover char Bernie Sanders as well as Elizabeth Warren what about Iowa itself why is it always is such an important state it's the first it's the one you get the the first step off of it if you could win in Iowa chances are you've got a pretty good foothold as you look at New Hampshire and South Carolina Nevada some of these other states so you know if you go back in history not every person who's won the caucuses in Iowa has gone on to win the nomination but this is an interesting perspective for a lot of these candidates because Joe Biden for one is campaign is really pushing for a win here just for the sheer fact that they want people to initially immediately as the vote start getting salad they give this being a trump verses bite in eventual November match up so that's what they but try to ingrain in people's minds here tell us about the trump rally on Thursday night because between now and November we're going to be seeing a lot of these rallies what is one like and what are people saying at these rallies in this one a what made it unique is a couple things number one of course he took aim at the democratic candidates you made fun of booted judges Davey called Elizabeth Warren pocahantas and Joe Biden sleepy Joe and you know got the crowd riled up he also talked quite a bit about impeachment actually said while impeachment has been a bad time in America for the next administration for the Clinton administration he actually calls it a happy time for the trump administration saying that he's got more done tell us more about the typical Iowa voter Democrat or Republican what are they like and what are they looking for for president twenty twenty you know it's interesting because you've got people who would like to see Joe Biden get the nomination they're looking to steady the ship as it were have a more moderate Democrat come in and especially when you go up and down the eastern portion of highway that's more industrialized and you've got cities like Davenport's in into view okay these are places that would like to see maybe a democratic candidate that's a little more steady and then you go to the college towns and you look at places like Ames like Iowa city and this is where Bernie Sanders Elizabeth Warren have really been striking a trying to hit a tone especially with some of the younger people that maybe a more progressive candidate is the direction to go in believe it or not Andrew Yang is is made a lot of headway among the children they did a straw poll tens of thousands of Iowa teenagers voted and Andrew Yang was the big winner so he's seems to be getting some favor in the really young generation

"On June thirteenth nineteen eighty five another sticky summer work dad. CIA headquarters slugged. On the agency's Washington men were sifting through reports from their agents. In in Rome or Mexico City they were gossiping in hushed voices about potential recruits at the Soviet embassy. They were getting out final. Memo's case officers officers before a boozy lunch. The usual but in Aldrich Ames office at the end of the gloomy counterintelligence hallway. Something extraordinary was happening Aldrich or rick as everyone called him was sitting in front of a six expound stack of documents even with his high security clearance and easy access as chief of the CIA Soviet counterintelligence branch Sh- it had taken weeks to amass the stack a complete set of dossiers on every Soviet working for the CIA. At least the ones Rick New and he was pretty sure he knew them all some of the documents were originals. Somewhere copies it didn't matter to CIA was careless with its reams of paper. Nothing would be missed. Rick was sure he was calm. Confident didn't self-assured he knew the CIA nuits blind spots. They'd never find him out. He thought anyway it was too late to turn back now. He was already in too deep. He swept the paper into plastic bags. The bags he clicked into his briefcase. Nobody's stopped him. As he sauntered down the hall he continued through the lobby still not a single suspicious glance then relief out the front doors. Rick Ames was carrying the largest set of documents ever smuggled out of CIA headquarters and carried them straight to lunch with the K. G..
