Democrats Screw Middle Class America... Again!
"Want to go back to what's happening in just a short amount of time. We're going to find out that the Federal Reserve is going to tell us like they always tell us that they're committed. They're committed to stopping inflation. Right. Glad to hear it. Glad you guys finally actually realized it was a problem. 'cause you told us forever it was transitory. Well, how's that going to work when you have a White House that is clearly committed to just making sure that everybody's got more money in their pocket. And by the way, the kids that are getting this and the adults, I say kids, right? But let's keep in mind, 67% of all outstanding student debt, of which we have $1.7 trillion worth more than we had in the subprime mortgage crisis, the primarily under 40, right? So it's young people. It's young people that went to fancy schools and now they can't pay it back because oh, I don't know, they did like a gender study program. And they find that they're not that employable other than maybe as a barista at Starbucks, which they don't want to work at anymore. You get the picture, right? So you have people that took out too much debt, and you know, you know, I think the government had a role in all that. I think this is a major industry. And they created effectively this kind of woke ism amongst this younger generation. Through the university system. But these kids sign on the dotted line, and now they're not going to have to pay back. And who's going to get stuck? Paying this? American taxpayer payers, the people that are working so hard that are dealing already with escalating. Gas prices. They're dealing with escalating food prices. It's like your rubbing salt in the wound here, guys. It's really pretty unbelievable. I mean, look, our long-term trajectory trajectory here is quite flawed. In fact, I would say that we're on the brink of a lot of fiscal problems,
The Conection Between National Security and US Economy
"Last do. question, mister secretary, I know you've been on the road with cav pack dot com, supporting Republicans across the United States. The midterms are four months away. When you do that, when you go out and you talk for Adam laxalt in Nevada or you go stand with Herschel Walker in Georgia, you'll be up there with doctor eisen, Pennsylvania wherever you go. You get a huge crowd. Does anyone care about the national security or is it all just gas and food prices? Because I know the latter are driving daily kitchen table conversations, but we have to keep the country safe and this administration is not doing that. Does that come up in your appearances? Yeah, they're so deeply connected to you and absolutely comes up. Looks understand that when we lose what we had for four years, American energy dominance, the ability to deliver affordable energy to ourselves. That's natural security applications and implications for the ability to afford to drive your kids to their soccer game or to their ballet recital. No, the American people get it. They understand the place they understand the Chinese Communist Party isn't just a foreign problem that they're inside the gates here showing up at PT matings and school board meetings and infiltrating our university systems. Those are those are things that impact their lives every day too. And sometimes we talk about them as if these are these two separate things, right? Foreign policy and the ability to feed your family and pay your rent and afford the energy for your car. They are deeply connected. The American people get it and they know that President Biden is not delivered on either front.
Sen. Ron Johnson: 2020 Report Proved Joe Biden Was Compromised
"Can we tell today senator Johnson if he's compromised And isn't it a fair question Well I think it's pretty obvious that he is We issued our report in September of 2020 And you are right It wasn't like it was very it wasn't well supported my investigation by members of my own committee it just wasn't okay I could not get a subpoena Hunter Biden and James Biden couldn't do it I needed votes I couldn't get the votes So we still without that plus we had COVID It was really difficult to be investigating in 2020 because of COVID We couldn't do it in person So that hampered our investigation But we still got our report out We showed a vast web of foreign international payments It's obvious that Joe Biden was implicated in these things It was obviously he was compromised But our report ended up being a catalyst Mister mc Isaac came forward with his distress Then you had Tony Bobbie saw that he got posed for $5 million that was not invested in their joint venture It was directly given two Hunter Biden That took him off He came forward and Tony bob Lewinsky who met Joe Biden Remember Joe Biden claimed I never talked to hunter about my overseas his overseas businesses And yet we've got these photographs with hundreds of overseas business partners and Joe Biden He met Tony bob lenski Tony bob Lewinsky said that Joe Biden is compromised I think I'll go with what Tony Bobbie's saying So no I truly believe that president of the United States is compromised Is that maybe why he weighed the sanctions on the Nord stream two pipeline Is that maybe why he discontinued the training initiative to the Department of Justice that was supposed to be investigating how China steals our intellectual property and our university systems Is that's what's going on here
Bernie Sanders May Actually Be Right About Something
"When I saw this clip of Bernie Sanders, basically complaining that we're living under an oligarchy, it made me take pause because we're talking a lot about oligarchies right now, and oligarchs, especially with what's happening with Russia and Ukraine. And it hit perfectly on a message that I've been trying to communicate for quite some time about what's coming next. What is the, what are the conditions of the country going to look like? So people ask me all the time, Charlie, why do young people tend to reject capitalism? Why do they not believe in free markets? Why do they not believe in private property rights? Now part of it, of course, is the university system and the government run education system. But there's another game at play here that we must recognize and we must realize. Bernie Sanders and AOC and Elon Omar, they know how to make socialists. They know the language to use. They know the diction, which is the word selection to engage in. So I want to play this tape here of Bernie Sanders. Talking about how we are living in a oligarchy. He basically says, if anyone thinks we don't live in an oligarchy in this country is solely mistaken. In our country, we have two people who own more wealth than the bottom 40% of the American population. Play cut one O one. And that is that the people on top, the very wealthiest people in our country are doing phenomenally well. And in fact, have never had it so good. But anybody who thinks that we don't have an oligarchy in this country is surely mistaken. In our country today, we have two people who own more wealth than the bottom 40% of the American population. So we fact checked Bernie Sanders on this. And he's right. Two people own more wealth than 40% of the American population.
DOJ Shuts Down China-Focused Anti-Espionage Program
"Charlie, just found out that the Biden Department of Justice ended a Trump era program designed to target Chinese spies infiltrating our universities. They said it made universities less competitive. Why did they do this? I'm so angry right now and I need you to explain to me why they would do this. Do they intentionally want China to spy on us? Politico dot com Department of Justice shuts down China focused anti espionage program. The China initiative is being cast aside largely because of perceptions that unfairly painted Chinese Americans and U.S. residents of China, origins as disloyal. The Biden administration is shutting down a Justice Department program that focused on countering Chinese espionage. Following stumbling in a series of criminal cases and accusations that it accounted that amounted to racial profiling. Officials said Wednesday that the three year effort, known as the China initiative, was being cast aside because of perception that is unfairly painted Chinese Americans. Okay, let me ask you a question. How could you possibly counter Chinese espionage? Without going after Chinese Americans, or Chinese people. It's impossible. It's by definition, you have to profile Chinese people. It's a counter effort of the Chinese Communist Party. It's not even a, it's not about race, by the way. It's about nationality. It's about a counter espionage network. I'm going to say this as nicely as I can. Nicaraguans are not trying to infiltrate the United States university system. They should racial profiling. Well, no, it's a countermeasure. So let me get this straight. If China dropped bombs on America or I don't know, released a virus on the entire world that resulted in over 750,000 deaths and dare I say needless deaths, many of them, an entire lockdown craze in all of this and we're like, you know, what actually the problem with holding China accountable is you might profile Chinese people as being held accountable.
Freedom Is Not a Free Ride: Taking America Back With Secretary of State Mike Pompeo
"I really think that you know when you when you see what's happening in america today you realize this is kind of a classic pattern. God allows things to go too far as i said earlier to wake his people up and the enemy always plays in his hands and goes just a little bit too far and then suddenly people wake up. I never thought it would get this bad this quickly but it seems that it has taken the madness. I mean whether we're talking about antifa or the transgender madness. I mean most americans if they can finally focus they look they say. Wait a minute. But bruce jenner is a woman. You're telling me. I have to use this pronoun. You're telling the people burning down buildings aren't doing anything wrong. They're peaceful protesters. Notice your average american voice the way you do. I do looks around and says this has gone too far. Madness has been unleashed on the land. I need to do something for my kids for my grandkids. I thought freedom was a free ride. And i realize now have to pick up my gun and go to the phone lines. Maybe not literally. But it's a similar thing you realize that everything you held near and dear is being threatened directly when your kids are being threatened. Said you don't care you're gonna do whatever it takes. It's about the kids. You know the instinct you know what the lord and teaches us about parenting. The parents aren't about to take out a lot. They're not about to allow this to happen in their schools. They may not seen it. 'cause they worked but you know. I think the combination of having the kids at home during kobe. I think the left's movement. I think the idea somehow that our country was founded the sixteen nineteen project. This this idea that we're were racist because we're white this is some parents are not going to sit back and allow to be propagated. And so it'll take a little time to regain control of the city. Councils of the school boards of these state boards reaches that ladder university system to become american universities today. They're largely not american and frankly not the kind of university anybody would be proud of. I think people are gonna take this all back in. What they need is good leaders. Who are fearless. Helping them figure out where to apply their shoulder to the grindstone. We know choices

In case there's an active shooter situation. For example, you are the hidden protector. You're not looking for a fight. But you're willing to finish it. Collegiate Esports with UCI's Mark Deppe
"A very solid listener base for you to talk with Blossom. I think most people especially if they're following the ecology Sports feed are pretty familiar with the University of California or New Jersey. It's e sports program but we have a lot of people from the East Sports Network podcasts as well who might not be as familiar even after that introduction. So you see I was really held up as one of the early leaders in Collegiate Sports a lot of attention on the program from really the first days of it how have you felt that the program is a whole have you have you felt that the program is in a bit of a guiding position when it comes to the expansion of college sports cuz it feels like you guys are kind of at the Forefront of a lot of the different areas of Collegiate Esports. Yeah, I do feel that way when we started our program, you know, like like everybody else. We had a lot of questions. We didn't walk or doing. I think we did a few things that have been very notable that other people have looked at and and these are kind of things that I share with people when they they first call was a lot to school as I've talked to hundreds of schools and universities. It's become such a heavy time investment that we now have a Wiki that we share with all our frequently asked questions FAQ. Academic conference where we help teach people we're doing we've done webinars. So we definitely take that role seriously, but I think initially some of the things that really were groundbreaking was one. We we really identify pillars of our program what we were going to do our mission essentially. So we do five things we compete we support academics or research we engage with the community we create entertainment and we launch careers and so everything we do goes into those five things and we We Don't Stray outside of that too often because you can get distracted pretty easily. The other thing I think people really liked was our space that we built we didn't realize how important it was going to be. We needed a space for people to sit and to play it helped fund our program initially are are the arena which is powered by other powers you mentioned and not once we built that a lot of schools thought that was kind of required piece of the program. So a lot of people have come to look at our place toward our space to see what what they can build on their campus. So I would say those are two dead. That Drew people in and the third and final thing would just be UCI is just a really respected University. It's from all I can see the highest-ranked academic institution that offers suggestions for Esports from where a public university part of the most prestigious Public University system, and we're the only School in California. That's really this invest in these Sports. So a lot of jobs make a stand out and unique and because of our our position people have reached out to us and we've been happy and honored to share what we've learned and to be part of the thought leadership of the police force base. Absolutely. I think there's everybody any student who currently has a nice sport Three Dog campus or e-sports loud or place to crash just hang out and play video games. A lot of that is probably fakes to some of the the work done by by UCI and pushing this forward even at the University of Oregon when I was in school after birth. The iBuyPower Esports Arena had been announced there was no e Sports Lounge and I would back right before everything shut down due to covid-19. to adjust to what was going on and for those of you are familiar with Irvine U Irvine we don't have a football team we're one of the younger you see schools so long it's hard for us to distinguish ourselves among our peers like Berkeley and UCLA because we're just so much younger and newer and so I think e sports are viewed by money and a lot of our campus leaders is something that makes us unique makes a school of First Choice so if you're a gamer if you want to compete and you also are really smart student California you see I might be your top choice and there are a lot or cidar few other programs or services or attributes of Campus that can say that that they make you see is school First Choice definitely the leaders don't have any football program that stuff to hear that such a great mascot I would love to see yeah it's been a point of contention for many years but at this point it's a dog too expensive to start up and we probably be good anytime soon if we did well yeah it's showed

Reflecting on a New Report on the Experience of Disabled Students in Higher Education
"Start this week not with covid-19. Change but with a new report from the policy connect higher education commission arriving at thriving highlights the work that still needs to be done to support the full participation of disabled students. Thought she I'm already tell us more. Thanks Jim. And so this is a new report from policy connects h e commission. It is called very casually arriving at thriving it's a great Rapport and what I really like about is it's genuinely listen to student perspective. It's got 12 recommendations that right across the student life cycle and these recommendations really ensure that disabled students can fully participate in Haiti. And what's really interesting about. The report is that it's very clear that there's a benefit for all students when we ensure that we get it right for disabled students and it's interesting the report I think cuz there's a few moments in it where the recommendations she talked about a need to focus on outputs. But of course most of our regulations certainly in England focuses on outcomes. Absolutely. The report is is really interesting and actually it needs to be given much thought. Providence and I think it's likely to get to these in these times which is a great shame. The the point that I'm really just made in introduction there about the fact that all of us students benefit from from from making sure that we are properly accessible. I don't mean accessible in a just a physical sense, but but but thinking about that policies and procedures and the way in which we we look after each other and so on so it's really important and finally we need to give it more prominent than it's currently God. I married this thing about, you know, the kind of deficit model that it talks about. I mean should we spend more of our time helping disabled students just navigate an access h e or actually should our Focus be on sort of everyone around disabled students, you know administrators and support staff and academics because it doesn't have a picture of a sector that appears to not really understand the needs of this group of students. Yeah. I mean, I think what's really nice about the twelve recommendations is that they're sort of a balanced portfolio so some wage You know pointed it shouldn't behaviors and particularly around social belonging. It's fellow students who helped you to feel like you belong to an institution not necessarily that you know, the administrator that you interact with. So some of them around student behaviors, but I think the the bigger aim here is to really get institutions and the regulator moving on on some very clear improvements for disabled students. I think particularly for Professional Services listeners this idea around the burden of bureaucracy. I mean University Systems are hard for most students in in my experience. They're particularly hard for students who have disabilities. So I think there's a lot of valuable takeaways for institutions and I guess what's really nice is it's got joined-up approach outside of an institution as well as so it talks about these joined up plans for each stage of a student life cycle may be logged in is a pupil at school or college and then moving through to the labor market and that's really got to be the the ultimate aim of game rights have a joined-up approach across all those sectors and obviously we're in the middle of a pig. Global pandemic at this point are you getting any sense that you know, the the needs here particularly for disabled students in relation to access are changing cuz some people tell me that you know, things are getting actually much better for disabled students. Suddenly, you know, everyone is agreeing to lecture capture where some disabled students were lobbying for that for years, but other people are telling me that actually new needs a new disabilities are coming to the surface wage, you know, each time. We we make progress on on something we make progress in in One Direction or another what we need to really now do and I think the reporters saying is you think about it in in all of those directions to make you know, make sure that we understand the impact that one's going to have on on another. I think one of the first things that we really need to do and universities absolutely and not just universities. But Society more widely. We need to make it off absolutely the case that people feel able to to to be who they are and to and to discuss their
The Diversity of Security Challenges in Higher Education
"Now. What is it like? Every year you have a new batch of of students coming on board and they all want to connect to your network I mean what's the? What's the reality of that situation from a security point of view It is a lot of prep-work over the summertime, a lot of you know repair and refine and and. You know replace things that aren't doing well, and then when you know we get about two weeks out from classes starting. which this year is September second. So we're kind of in that zone right now. That's where we're making sure that everything is working. In it in. Its, optimum. Capacity and capability. Following that it's you know let's continue planning for whatever is going to happen next you know we the spring term winter spring term in in January this past year and nobody anticipated. Kobe I I'm not. You know I'm sure that there was an -ticipant because the the fun part of that is we actually did a pandemic tabletop exercise in the division of Information Technology, which is the central a unit on campus. We do that path the fall of twenty and eighteen. So we hit already kind of work through some of the. You know the communications challenges and the organizational challenges so when it came time to do. The transition from online or from in person courses to online courses, we were able to do that in very short time and that included transitioning thirty seven hundred core courses. From in person delivery to online delivery so that really served you well, I and it was the preparation time and it was the understanding. Of what we would need to do and it was also, you know checking those channels you know. I've done some business continuity work in my in my pass and a business continuity plan to just never exercise it's not a plan. It's a bunch of on paper so So we were able to walk through and validate that and that's the kind of work we do during the school year. And we take our you know kind of slowdown period so. Beginning summer you know everybody takes a deep breath and then we exhaling get back to work you know Sometime during the summer I like to encourage my my team to have a little bit of time off. But when September goes in and the students arrive we, we try to work really hard to get him through and then we take it the winter holidays. What what kinds of things are you and your team defending against who? Who's WHO's coming at your network? You know it's the usual array of Fred actors You know think about the things that research is doing. You know we're we're doing. A lot of research in the area of Koga right now, and it's just. Be We have the capability. We have the expertise we have the researchers at want to do that. But we also have school medicine in public health. We also have a school of Nursing School of Pharmacy. So healthcare education is important in that has just a treasure trove highly valuable. Information in it. But we do engineering work, and some of that work is is patentable work. So that's probably attractive We do a lot of business influenced work. we have data science institute which is trying to figure out the the better ways to understand. You know the the magic acronyms of a I in L.. Artificial intelligence. Machine. Learning. And and that's that's attractive information not only that forty four, thousand students twenty three, thousand staff that's a treasure trove of marketable information. You know I always wonder you know someone in a situation like yours where certainly you're going to have some students and I'm thinking of Oh I don't know folks in computer science and other sorts of places who were going to look at you know the the campus system or the university system as you know their own personal playground there that. you know they're gonNA WANNA, test their own skills against yours. I mean I is that an annual thing and and how do you? How do you? How do you not be adversarial? How do you support You know the educational aspects of of those students while still keeping things up and running what's your approach to those sorts of things? Well. So I we we are establishing some really good partnerships with with the Academy with the the the professors and researchers that are interested in studying the cybersecurity arts and sciences. we've had a relationship with the information school. is They're they're part of the College of letters and Sciences and now they're part of what's been amalgam is as the the School of Computing. Data. And Information Studies so CDs. In in in doing that, I, mean, the partnership is if it's data and if it's doing things if it's you know working or arresting or or if it's needing to be analyzed, we have people that are very much interested and so I've had my my department be intentional about establishing those greater relationships we have you know researchers doing anything from identity access. Management Research to data analytics to cybersecurity metrics and then we have others on campus that are doing great work in high throughput. Computing Great Work in in you know engineering the the next greatest you know computer technologies. In other side trips we had We have a researcher that is working on, Thomas Vehicle. Research you know and there's an awful lot of cyber in there too so. Having those kind of relationships is the the real multiplier here, and this is not unusual by the way for university. This is nothing super special. We're doing it's just that You know there's a, there's a lot of cybersecurity programs out there where there you know NSA certified Center for Academic Excellence. Certified and we're GONNA. Get there eventually. I believe But right now we're just supporting the researchers in the courses are being taught. Sue I myself have been a guest lecturer in a one of the business school courses. It has an information security course as part of its core. That's been fun. I enjoy doing. I did a little bit of that as an adjunct University part of my coming here.
How Are Employers Treating Workers During The Pandemic
"And we've been talking about how employers are treating their workers during the pandemic with Michael Sein Auto from The Guardian. Michael, what happens to workers? Now we're talking. We're looking at layoffs in a lot of different industries. Is that right? A lot of different industries are still laying off workers. Whether it's as the PPP loans are expiring businesses that have had to close again after reopening because a surge in Corona virus cases to just industries that have survived up until this point Without laying off workers either Cos announcing our warning that mass layoffs or imminent like some of the large airlines, United Airlines said By October 36,000 workers are possibly subjected toe beginning permanently lay it off for load. American Airlines has said that There's been a lot of university systems who are making decisions right now to caught a lot of workers. There was a study a few weeks ago by the Economic Policy Institute that ah, large portion of workers who have lost their jobs during the pandemic. Those jobs are not coming back. They those workers will not Have a job that they had before the pandemic to return Teo on and a lot of industries even if they have started to reopen, like hotels and things like that, they're not At seeing capacity or demand to the point where they're recalling all their workers and the ones that are getting recalled. They might only get a few shifts. You know a week they're not getting full schedules. Is there any silver lining in any of this? Michaela do work. Is there anything positive that we can say about workers in the United States right now? Because this is ah! A very serious and grim picture that we're painting with, obviously, which is necessary. But are there any bright spots? I'm wondering that not too not too many. I think some of the bright spots if there are any and all of Ben The workers who have organized protest strikes worker still organizing Tio form labor unions or organizing with their existing labor unions. Teo pushback on employers or bad practices within their industry. The urgency for for organizing has certainly intensified because of the working conditions caused by the by the pandemic. But there's AH, a report in the Economic Policy Institute in December 20 19 US employer spends around $340 million on union avoidance consultants about one in five union election campaigns involves a charge that an employer has illegally fired. Ah, worker. We've seen that during the pandemic with the Amazon protests. Ah lot of workers who led those protests. Have been fired, lost their jobs. A lot of workers are seeing the the benefits of collective organizing and having a collective voice. It's fan. Inspiring to see these workers on the front lines that are still working there in the pandemic to protest and risk their jobs to improve their their working conditions. And, you know, raise awareness of how workers in these industries are treated, you know, across the board around the country. Michael Sein
Harvard, MIT sue to block ICE rule on international students that would prevent many from staying in the US
"New rules from the U. S immigration and Customs Enforcement or ice. They say international students cannot stay in this country if their schools go entirely online in the fall, And I mean this could potentially impact hundreds of thousands of students who are here. That includes Victor Troll. See from Venezuela. He is an incoming master's student at the University of North Texas, and he talked with one of our producers. Let's listen. When I first heard the news. I honestly thought that it was fake news. It doesn't seem fair that we're being asked to leave the country on the technicalities in our immigration status. Because of something that we cannot control. So, Elissa explain what's in this new federal room. So if your school has come out and said, due to the pandemic, we're going to all be virtual in the fall. The federal rules says. You cannot remain in the U. S. To stay. You have to transfer to a school that's offering in person classes. Here's Rachel Banks from NASA Association of International Educators. It really removed the decision making power from higher education institutions. Basically, this guidance has said. Well, if you're going to pursue a fully online model You can't have international students on your campus. So I says the dinos is to minimize the risk of transmission of Koven, 19 by not admitting students into the country who don't need to be here. The State Department issued a statement saying the guidance will help with social distancing on campus. The timing is really significant because colleges have spent all summer figuring out their plans for the fall, and many have already told students what they're going to do, including moving up the school start date to avoid a possible second wave, which doesn't leave a lot of time for schools to rearrange their plans or for students to transfer to another program. I mean, this is all so complicated for students, but also I mean for schools. Isn't this going to be a financial hit? Don't Don't colleges and universities get a lot of money from foreign students? Absolutely. International students tend to be a big moneymaker for college. According to one economic analysis. International students contribute $41 billion to American High red in just a recent academic year. Some schools have already announced that they will be online in the phone. That's including Harvard in the California State University system. As cases have started to rise. Other schools like the University of Southern California have scaled back initial plans to be all in person. Now they're planning a hybrid approach meeting there some face to face instruction in some online, the experts I talked to say they expect more schools to take this hybrid approach. It's actually one way that colleges might be able to help their international students navigate this guidance because students will have at least one class in person. All right,
Rising to the Challenge of Working From Home without Childcare with Susannah Quinsee
"Around mid-march, as all, the the pandemic is, is taking over in the UK was probably about a week behind the US where they the panic points. Ten so. Describe how you learned that everything was going to go online and sort of what that realization was like, both in terms of your work than massively scaling up at the same time that your child care was hearing. Yeah, so I tended to not work weekends where I could avoid it in before as I cooled it before life. I remember I think it was on the Saturday morning for some reason I picked up my fire, and it was just like. My email was just rammed with messages, saying that we were gonNA move everything online. By the twenty thousand mark will preferably Leah and that's what my team does like we support. The staff in the university to use online missiles says to defend that teaching, and so it was a moment of kind of okay, so we're doing this in how? So, yeah, that will weekend. Who tried to work? Our approach was really meant because it's one thing to say, we're moving online. But what does that really being? Then? Students had been told that we were. We were trying to work through. There was just no and I just remember that whole weekend was spent just trying to ride emails in between Juggling Children and family life, and my partner works at the same university and he's an it, so he was. Getting slammed at the same time and. We finally just went out for Wolf on the Sunday afternoon, and it felt so good to just kind of get what hadn't realized how stressed I was until we actually left the house, so yeah, that's how I found out about to Winton. older next week was just rammed at that stage. We still had childcare. But then we weren't sure when knockdowns that she going to start, there was quite a lot of uncertainty. He would be allowed to work and who wouldn't say, that was so of just evolving what was happening with schools, either at that point site that was that was kind of very up in the that happened very quickly as well, not my oldest daughter school. Just she went in in the morning, came home off new. We shot. Just kind of a lot of places places happened. Well, hopefully you are able to help your professors and students transition with a bit more A. Yes. How did you do that? Like what? What sort of support did you provide for for teachers like wait? I've never taught online before. Yes, it might seem Woah, absolutely amazing, just stepping up, and so I can head of educational technology instantly over that weekend produced a kind of Wiki page then we just all the material content on, and we start to die. That's quickly as possible and get that message out that. So as soon as we had that link, we will send around Dolphin University say okay. This is the information you need is is here. And funny enough like that morning. I'd just been kind of before. This will happen in thinking are really think we need to. Plan of things, how are we going to manage? This is a director until I see my team, saying these are the five areas that we need to focus on like that morning, and then by the often. Okay those changed little bit. Differently so yeah, that's what we did we. We went into so I. The deputy president at the Investi that we had various structures to like manage how you change policy because its policies and kind of contractual things you have to do with students that we kind of feed into committees around that what can with colleagues across invest t to support staff in particular Cessna? That was the big thing. We about to move into the exam period. That's why the investors had exams from Sawing April may so that was a big transition point to move Every of invested in kind of weld was doing it at the same time between different institutions. And so, what did you come up with I'm very curious what what is best practice for online assessment then? Yeah, sure so in the initial period. It was kind of what we call it. The emergency response so we had four five principles see if I can remember the words said one one was was around. Try and do as much as you can a think critically. Too, seriously, so in real time basically because I had no idea where our students were. Could be anywhere in the world. We have lot of international students, so said as much as you can to up, they can. Adapt flexibly. That was that was one thing. The other one was around. This is not perfect online learning. This is about best efforts to try and get as much as you out there and really communicate with your students. Should be very basic, so you shouldn't assume that anyone has anything moved a mobile phone and. Data collect point on a mobile because again all of us giants had carrying respond species living with parents who suddenly have other siblings at home so. That was one of them was. Keep it simple as well so you just be communicating with your students in university system, so they want rocket science united was it was a big
Taking Aim at Discrimination, UCs Action Could Spell E-N-D for SAT
"From wondering I'm David Brown, and this is business worse daily on this Tuesday June ninth late last month, the University of California fired the shot that may have killed. The sat the sat in its rival tests. The act of long ruled the lives of anxious college bound high school, Juniors and seniors. The tests which have been given for decades have played pivotal roles in who gets to. To Go to college, and where they've also frequently determined, who receives merit based scholarships, but in May, the University of California said no more it's phasing out the tests as a requirement for admission at it's nine colleges which include the prestigious UCLA UC Berkeley campuses. It's detailed plan doesn't fully end the use of the tests until twenty twenty-five, but they'll be completely eliminated at that point. The UC system had already made the tests optional for this year's applicants due to corona virus complications, but a more fundamental reason is motivating the university's decision to cancel the tests permanently discrimination in December California. High School, students and equal justice advocates sued the university system. They argued that requiring students to submit sat or act. Test scores is both nonsensical and illegal. It's nonsensical. They claim because six decades of the university's own research shows that the tests don't predict college success. They're illegal. The plaintiff's claim because test scores are strongly influenced by family income, parents, education and race. As a result, the plaintiffs say requiring the test scores violates California's own anti-discrimination laws by preventing the plaintiffs from accessing public higher education. The case is still pending, but last month university leaders agreed with those arguments several said the tests favor the wealthy, because children from affluent families can afford expensive test prep in can pay to take the tests multiple times. Supporters of the decision said the tests screen out good. Hispanic black and other minority candidates California's Lieutenant Governor Ellen couldn't lock is a member of the university's board. These tests are extremely flawed and very unfair. She said according to The New York Times enough is enough she added. Over the last few years, hundreds of small colleges and universities across the country, either made the tests optional or eliminated the requirement to submit the test scores all together since the pandemic emerged in the US, another seventy schools have scrapped the requirement at least temporarily. The Times reported. The University of California's decision could spell the future for the sat in the college. Board it is the most popular university system in the country. Last year, six of its campuses made us news and World Report's list of the top ten most popular campuses in the US. Hundreds of thousands of students applied to the schools. The system carries tremendous weight within America's higher education community, meaning other large elite colleges are likely to follow suit. which is not good news for the two powerhouse nonprofits that administer the Tests Princeton's College Board sells the Sat Iowa's act administers its test of the same name. Both are multi multimillion dollar organizations according to the New York, times one critic of the sat estimates that the College Board is lost forty five million dollars in revenue this spring alone due to covid nineteen cancellations. It had promised to deliver a test. Students could take online this week. The company said it will not in fact be able to deliver an online test. Rival Act was struggling before the University of California announced its bellwether decision late last month, the company said it was taking cost cutting actions including the opportunity for staff to take leaves of absence or to resign voluntarily and receive severance. Pay Act CEO. Martin Rutta departed abruptly on May. Twenty ninth under his four-year leadership, the A, C embarked on a string of acquisitions intended to diversify the company's business,
University of California to drop SAT, ACT test requirements
"The university of California is implementing a major change by eliminating college entrance exams as a requirement for admission it's being called the landmark decision the university of California board of regents has voted to suspend the requirement of S.
