Last month, petco announced a pet project with Lowe's home improvement stores. The shop within a store concept will devote about 1% of Lowe's floor space to petco at select locations fortune reports. Shoppers can then pick up dog food, kitty litter and pet toys along with their paint chips and spackle. Some locations will even offer pet vaccinations, microchipping, and mobile grooming. The plan is to roll out about a dozen of these stores next month as part of a pilot program in Texas. North Carolina and South Carolina. Both home improvement stores and pet supply stores have enjoyed a boom during the pandemic. As people spent more time at home, they felt the need to spruce up their surroundings and because they were home more. They sought the companionship of dogs cats and other pets. One in 5 Americans got a pandemic pad according to the ASPCA. Instead of spending money on dining out and vacations, people diverted those funds to a new coat of paint and a cushy dog bed. The goal of the petco Lowe's partnership is to give shoppers more of the products they need in one place. Lowe's head of branding Marisa thalberg told USA Today that 60% of the people lose interviewed said they'd be more likely to shop at a home improvement retailer that also offered pet supplies. The company also launched an online pharmacy last year. But perhaps its most strategic maneuver was its acquisition of Chewy dot com a popular pet products website several years ago. Consumers have been increasingly shopping for pet products online. Chewie dot com is a primary destination for them to do so. The company was spun off and had a successful IPO three years back. But petko's move into low stores gives both brick and mortar retailers some advantages. First, there's convenience. Folks who are nesting may pick up their pet supplies while they're making their weekend honeydew trips to Lowe's. Plus, even if home improvement spending returns to pre-pandemic levels as people get out more, their pandemic pets will still need food and other supplies. says millions of people are bitten by dogs every year Most of them children In 2017 350,000 people were treated at hospitals for non fatal dog injuries 10,600 of them were children under the age of two and according to the insurance information institute and State Farm nationwide in 2020 there were 17,000 dog bite claims and other dog related injuries Insurance companies paid out claims of $854 Data from the consumer expenditure survey shows the percentage of human physicians jumped by forty percent while the number of veterinarians nearly doubled amazing how the field of animals growing now pet owners in new york can now take their furry trusted companions with them to the grave if they wish since the governor has now signed legislation that makes it legal for the cremated remains of pets to be interred with your owners said any of the approximately nineteen hundred. But they do need what's in it and me is easier for them to digest. So how can we feed so many animals who biologically need meat or at least are more easily or better fed with meat when the production of that meat can be both harmful to the planet and to some especially in the case of industrial arming morally. Objectionable it's science to the rescue. Let's talk about cell cultured meat. A take for example bond pet foods a pet food company in boulder colorado that late in two thousand twenty announced that in produced the world's first quote animal free chicken protein to us in pet foods. Bond took a blood sample from a live. chicken extracted. the genetic code then inserted it a code of some food grain yeast these modified used grown in a fermentation tank. According to bond quote churns out meat proteins that are identical to those typically produced on farm and field. It's a similar fermentation process. That's been used for half a century to make enzymes for cheese but bond is reassembling the process harvest high quality animal proteins. The process produces cell cultured meat which is basically lab manufactured meat without the need or mess of raising and killing animals on farms and bond is not the only company experimenting with another called because animals is using a relatively similar process which harvests cells and gross them into tissue. The can then be used in treats and food for pets. A new era of pet foods made with reduced environmental impact. More sustainability and more responsibility is hardly just around the corner though. This new way of feeding the household pet is going to take some time. The science for as far as its vanished is not quite big time yet For one manufacturers will have to work out the best ways to ramp up the process large amounts of animal based material and blood or tissue or whatever it might still be needed at least initially aldridge said. Oh whether or not they've got to where they can take to scale so instead of making a couple of grams making a million pounds. I don't know if they've got that all worked out yet. Another question to be answered and not an insignificant one once. This cultured meat is produced. Will your pets eat it. Will they like it. And furthermore companies will have to educate the public which may be picky about what goes into fido's dish. They may have to overcome environmentalists and animal rights backers who may object still to the use of blood or other animal material that makes the base of the new food. They'll undoubtedly face stiff competition as even the big pet food makers jockey for position in a market in which good affordable protein is increasingly difficult to come by the new guys will have to make their product affordable but even though this news l. cultured product might not be taking over the pet food aisle at your local big box store anytime soon. The desire for options in meet more humane sustainable options is clearly there. Aldridge said it could be a viable niche in the marketplace in the next five ten years as long as we have what is it one hundred and eighty million dogs and cats in the us. But i want to find out what the place is worse. The suits showed up. You can see where this is going. Grant got beat out. He says those corporate visitors offered a million dollars more for the practice than he could afford and he was not feeling happy about this. Well i mean disappointing. Would be an understatement. That's for sure. The corporation that beat grants bid is mars. The giant international chocolate company that makes eminem's twix bars and has locations around the world and this trend is corporate and even private equity money from everywhere from goldman sachs to mars to j. ab holdings which is the parent company of crispy. People who will remortgage houses for some of these vet bills are twenty thirty thousand dollars. If you're going to get a hip replace- if you've had major operations you've you've had climbed to remortgage their houses. Yes how are you going to thirty thirty thousand dollars. Where are you going to get that money. But it did not used to be this way. And i know this may shock some pet owners out there but when madonna was a kid a lot of animals were kept outside the house. Maybe you took them to the vet a few times a year. So when did we start spending thirty grand and surgery for our pets. Mike dix was chief economist for the american medical veterinary association. And now he's a consultant for bets. I teach marion's to ask clients one set of questions because it's very important. Where does your pet sleep for. Options at sleeps outside sleeps in the garage sleeps in the house. It's sleeps in my bedroom. Mike where our pets sleep illustrate this one huge shift at occurred an invention with completely changed the way we interacted with and spend on our pets. That human animal bond thing really really took off in the late eighties as parasites came on and we were able to keep those dogs in the house. Parasitism asari things kill fleas techs. I mean you know love has its limits like you do. I love you enough to get fleas. That's a whole other level of love and the more people are inside. What those cuts the more. They notice things. According to the american pet products association last year we spent over a record setting hundred billion dollars on our pets for food entries and vets so since the eighties and nineties this spending has been increasingly catching. The eye of corporations and veterinary practices can be seen as a reliable investment. It's got low overhead. It's not like you have to build a factory or create a production line. I wrote to mars. I wanted to know why the company invested in vets. They declined an interview but mars also makes pet food like pedigree and whiskers so it just makes sense to also invest in vets. Mike says there are about six thousand small to medium size vet practices and hospitals in the us. The kind that have at least two or three full-time bets on staff but out of those five thousand of them are now owned by big corporations. You might not know it because a lot of them like to keep that small business look and feel but many are consolidating or even buying and flipping them and that is having an impact on independent vets like grant in iowa vets are often in debt. They had to go to school which is expensive average. Tuition is more than two hundred thousand dollars. Some vets will never be able to pay off their loans. They pay the interest..

But this monday are is. We're celebrating international puppy day and it's also international. Women's ones gene is going to tell us about her book series. Just all about well. She's doing sooner anything she's a professional speaker. Also thanks for joining me today. Welcome thank you for having me. Marie i love your show. Thanks for having me. Thank you. And i a fan of your of your book series especially i love and cheang tell us. How did you become such. It'd be a big fan of dogs. Well i grew up with dogs but oddly enough. They weren't my dogs. We lived in a very rural area. It was mostly horse farms but those farms had dogs and somehow they found their way to our house. And i'm sure i began begging and pleading for a dog probably as soon as i could start talking but my parents were very resistant and yet by the time i was five or six i was able to convince my mom that when she went grocery shopping she should bring home dog biscuits even though we didn't have a dog because all the neighbor dogs visited and of course that just created more neighbor dogs finding their way to our house and finally when i was seven got my first dog. He was a red doberman. He grew to one hundred and ten pounds. He was a monster of a dog and just incredibly lovable and protective. And i've been dog fan ever since. Well that's definitely a special a special memory Chiba what what Our pets are thinking. I think so. And i can only offer you that i know what my pets are thinking and you can tell me maria because you have a beautiful little care interior that i you know we occasionally get glimpses of and i'm sure you know exactly at least around here at dinnertime. I am constantly hearing that. They're starving to death. And if i don't see them fast enough they're going to die right so i mean it's just it's it's always that little bit when they turn their head when they wag their tail their body language and all of them have their own unique personality. So it's kind of fun to put words to what they're thinking. But yes i think as we grow close to our dogs and build that bind. We have a sense of what they're thinking. I was just going to i. That in i think if you have a bond with your with your pet that's how yes. You understand them very well and it is. It's very special for you know if people don't take time to do that i think they're missing such a special part of that relationship. You really have to take the time to bonded and understand And understand your off Agree and you know what's interesting to me. Is i believe they know it. We're thinking too. I think that's how they're so sensitive to an were sad that often they come up and wall. Try and and you know just interfere if you will be there distract us and when we come home in the evenings right was soon as we enter the house. There's an excitement about us. Being back. And i really think they feel what's what's happened in our day and and how we are yes that you know she leaves me because sometimes you're absolutely right. She knows things that they sense that you just don't think we think they would know what she you know. They said listen. How many do you just have one dog or do you have more than one. So we have three right now My husband prefers to but we we've been able to manage space very well for three. We have a six pound toothless chihuahua. He's fourteen and he runs the show in the house. As he's the smallest end the mightiest. We have a twenty five pound a eight year old blind. Pug this princess zoe. She is the queen of the house. just ask her she'll tell you and then we most recently adopted a seven year old airedale terrier and she is a former show dog. She's absolutely beautiful. Her name is still sally sue We are very big proponents of adopting senior dogs. We love we love the older. The older matz in the house. That's that's really really nice and so do all of them get along they do get along they Enjoy sometimes having their own space. But they know how to claim it and so yeah they do. And we're we're very fortunate that way. It's not easy to find three all the time that will that will work together. But we've been very fortunate. Yes yes i love. It was when the dogs don't get together. But i find that to like she loves. She loves having her friends over. 'cause i do play dates but all of a sudden she just you know all of a sudden they want their own space every so often you know so yup i cairn terriers are very personable dogs right but there are also rather garnish. I mean they they are yeah. They like to protect. Yes that's obsolete worried. I didn't realize that you what you're telling these absolutely right. That's absolutely how she is. Definitely guard personable. She has i mean everybody in our neighborhood news her in i did tax. People asking me like are. I haven't seen sweden. they are this week. You know me sick. So i actually when we walk. I actually have to stop by. There's a few neighbors. They just love saying so. She's like the personal yet available. But you're absolutely worry. She isn't that funny. I noticed that too in our neighborhood. It's great the kids. The kids identify our pug as being sucky as the main character of my book and so just adorable to me when they come over for halloween. Of course not this past year but in years prior when we opened the door. Oh it's dougie. They don't even know who we are. They know who our dog is exactly exactly they kids in the neighborhood. Exactly yeah. it's funny to school. If they see us the role the window down and they call her name now. They don't know me sweetie. You're absolutely right. That's the same thing for halloween. yes funny on. So how about the pandemic. how has the pandemic influence people's bond with dogs. I believe they've really impacted them and making them grow stronger. Because we've spent so much more time with our dogs than we would have previously. I don't know if you saw sauna statistic out a couple of weeks ago from the american pet products association. They're statistic is twelve point. Six million american households became pet owners between march and december of twenty twenty That's just amazing. So i believe we become closer. And and what. I'm concerned about now. Is that we need to pay attention to signs of separation anxiety. Is we shift back to being away from home because it just is only natural now that they like us being around and and i think there was some anxiety when we're always underfoot and now we're going to be gone so the things that i've found in doing some research that makes sense to me is go out for shorter periods of time at i. Let them get acclimated to you being gone Don't make a big fuss out of coming and going so you know you get your dog cited hand go.

Tell me i a little bit about the whole pet industry and why you guys got into that market and then let's get into what spot on those specifically well. According to the american pet products association Consumer spent around ninety. Five billion dollars in Pet products last year Roughly of which twenty nine thirty billion or pet products. So we were. There was certainly a market there for us to to develop something that was really a value in what people needed Which is you know. Keep their pets safe. And of course a lot of folks say well. The best way is is an actual fence not so much a virtual fence but that's not always realistic. I guess that's true Depending on you know maybe the neighborhood you live in a fence may not be allowed But if you are in a neighborhood or property that allows for fence in if you want your dog to rome building physical fences very expensive and costly and Also causing maintain so we wanted to come up with a solution. That kid gives you an alternative to Fiscal fence and of course a lot of people want to allow their dog the freedom to roam. And if you've got a big property then why not Which then brings me to the spot on fence. Are there limitations in terms of distance for example before we get into how it all works. But if if you let your dog have that freedom to roam can you still keep track however far they go the absolutely at dave So you know part of the pets. Natural curiosity is to sniff around and rome into be curious and with the spot on a virtual fence Your delimit is is. You're you're in your mind there. So there's no limit to distance you create a fence as large as you like. We have a fences that average from one acre to hundreds of acres. Let your dog ring. Nice now let's talk about this. Virtual fence is that something that you have to implant wires or something around an area or something. The dog wears give us an idea so unlike traditional systems there are no buried. Wires were base stations. That you have to set up. It's just a caller that the dog wears and to set it up. All you have to do is put it in. Learn mode in walk the exact perimeter you want to contain your pet. And once you're done you click save. And that's one of ten fences is that you could have on the collar. So it's highly portable and flexible. So you could even then go to dog park. There are many more of those popping up. And i guess do. The same thing walked the perimeter Or portion of that dog park. If you want to keep the dog there how does it keep the dog in the virtual fence. So that's a great point. A little addition to being at the park is instead of walking a custom Fence you could actually create a circle on the spot so there's an instantaneous circle of There's probably ten different sizes that you could create on the spot and put the collar on your dog right away and let let your dog. Oh play In the way that the the fence is a keyword contained is as your dog approaches the boundary that set. There's a series of tones once called an alert tone and the second is a warning tone that is to let the dog know that there are approaching the boundary. If your pet is trained which we have three custom training plans to help you and your dog learn the system What those tones mean. So you don't necessarily have to be at home or in a familiar place. The dog is trained to those towns. If your dog does breach the boundary They receive what's called an optional static correction which is something that is a stimulus to to truly keep contained in that that's been tried and true method for several decades now so the static correction is basically as we may have known in the past. I guess as kind of shocking caller To some degree doesn't cause harm but let them know you mean business. Don't go during actually. You're actually tracked. It does not harm. The dog tells them that they have reached the boundary that they've been training got you. Do you have one of the callers handy to show us as we're doing zoom views as well then you can give us an idea of how big it is. Oh for for those listening on the radio. I who haven't yet seen the video and then folks can come and see the caller as well. Yes so this is A medium size in. It's adjustable and you can adjust it to fit doug next down to thirteen inches of circumference and this particular Size fits seventeen inches. So if it's most medium sized dogs And here you have a button. Three buttons in display and you navigate and select which fences one activate and deactivate as well as create that circular containment i mentioned earlier goo and what does the display. Show us at that point. I mean it's obviously not for the dog to see but is that part of how we would be setting up.
