Saharan Dust Cloud Arrives At The U.S. Gulf Coast, Bringing Haze

"It's a journey. That's a weeks and spend thousands of miles across an ocean floating on currents of air today, a massive cloud of dust from the Sahara desert arrives in the southeastern United States to walk us through this meteorological phenomenon. We are joined by Professor Marshall Shepherd. The Director of the atmospheric scientists program at the University of Georgia welcome. Thank you for having me okay now. I've seen the satellite images, but. But tell us what it's GonNa. Look like from the ground as this wave of dust from the Sahara arrives in the United States. You know we give these things every year and some are bigger than others. These are this year quite large and so I think that's why it's garnering much attention. Typically you lose the blue sky for more hazy Milky Sky. You tend to see more vivid sunsets and sunrises because. Because of the scattering properties of the dust and interacting with the sunlight, so those are sort of the optical effects, but I think people that suffer from allergy to dust or particular matter, they actually might not find it so amusing. They may have some health issues Why is it so much bigger this year than normal? I think one thing that happened this year are e.. Is that that dust in the? The Hell region in parts of Africa sat there, and just collected because the the wind system this African easterly jet meteorologist talk about it took a bit longer to kind of get itself going, and once it gets going, you can belch and Burp that dust out into the Atlantic, and that's what we're seeing now. Because there was somewhat of a delay, there was a lot more desk sitting there the build up. All right so pros you said good sunrises and sunsets, cons, people who have health problems might find that the respiratory problems are worse. What else is this dust system? GonNa do I mean on the whole is a good thing or a bad thing you know one of the things is an earth scientist. The Earth is so connected, and this is just another example so these dust storms they actually can fertilize the oceans in parts of Amazonia. They're carrying things that really help those ecosystems. Ecosystems but on the flip side of that there's been studies recently say they can actually carry pathogens as well so when you think about Mosquitos as a vector born disease carrier some argued that these dust storms can be vectors, they can carry pathogens another perhaps positive however is that the dust? If there were to be a hurricane forming out over the Atlantic hurricanes don't like the dust. If the dust gets into those forming systems, they can weaken those storms quite a bit. How much? Much bigger. Is this one than what we would see in a typical year? You know it's interesting. I saw a colleague tweet scale. They were using some data from NASA NASA Sir several satellites up monitoring air, quality and air constituents, and literally this event was off the chart. It wasn't even the same type of event. It was just so far off the plot scale, and so four people who study atmospheric science like you is a moment totally nerd out and like remember where you. You were when the Great Sahara Dust of two thousand twenty came across the Atlantic I th I think it is I I've seen some sort of very hyperbolic terms like the Godzillas dust storm. Those types of things I don't i. don't tend to like us such hyperbole when I talk about these things, but it is an anomaly event. My good friend and colleague Tom Gill at the University of Texas El. Paso is an expert on dust storms I know he's geeking out on this. I hosted a podcast call, weather, geeks or the weather channel, and we use the term geeking out. I'm certain it. Scientists like Tom. Gillard geeking out over this dust storm. Marshall Shepherd is the Director of the atmospheric scientists program at the University of and former president of the American meteorological. Society thanks for talking with us about this monster dust storm. Thank you for having me.

"Within the last ten or so years just without going into details. Sort of specific historical events. What are your biggest takeaways from how we've advanced in, in your lifetime within the field of meteorology? What catches your eye? I'll go back a bit be owned by live shine. But tropical meteorology began in the middle of the twentieth century up until then people hadn't really understood how different the how differently the tropics operated compared to the mid-latitudes where Al initial undestanding. Hell we could translate theory into whether happened, and then, of course, satellite meteorology came along really in common usage in the seventies, and that gave us a completely different perspective. So just focusing on hurricanes, which are as you pointed out, my first love. We will Finally I to see them and see the structure from above to integrate with all the flights that the hurricane hunters Noah had been doing over the years, and that gave us new perspectives. And then we were able to delve into computer models and admits theory over the last twenty years, the National Hurricane center's full costs have the same accuracy three days out now as they used to only twenty four hours ahead. And of course, that allows for people to make decisions much Alie to decide, whether they're going to stay or go decide how they're going to react. And I think that's just amazing. I agree that prompts a question just off the top of my head. They're listening to you. Why is it that you think people trust? And accept weather information within certainty yet. Some doubt it when we talk about it from the. Perspective of climate change. I think you get to observe the whether if we day, so made urologists a really the first scientist anyone comes in contact with you watch the television, you listen to a podcast, you go online, and there's a major role logistic everyday, and you can validate what happened. You can say I didn't take my umbrella yesterday, and it was sunny or Ryan, don't you know you know what happened? I think climate is Hotta that I think if you'll close to climate, for example out, farming community digits saying on the ground,.

"And I, I should I should note that the AM s serves the, the nation, it serves our weather, and climate enterprise serves, the world has policy program in education. Program. It produces curricula for K through twelve schools. It has a broad reach one of the things that tries to do with these information statements and other types of statements that issues is really inject a bit of credibility from my leading science organization in the, the broader narrative on these topics. And that's what we're seeing with this new climate change statement. What, what from your lens, does the AMS hope to accomplish with the statement? As you said, before this so much out there on social media, and many of the platforms, where people are interpreting the inflammation, or uncomfortable with what's out there in pushing back on it. And the is is in terms of the US. The body who reflects on this, and provides professional considered and concrete information to the community. This is not meant to be an is not. Spun in a particular way, as I said the people who who developed this review this are diverse group. And so it really is out best understanding of the science. I think when you think about climate change one thing that refutable is out observations. The concrete some moment is and high Granada's everything show that the has warmed consistently. Yeah. I think that's right. You know, there's, there's I don't think that the mommas are the satellites have an agenda. I think they are just what the are in, that's the key point, the mess and other organizations like the American geophysical union triple AS, leading science organizations of all issued statements that essentially, you're sort of saying the same thing, which are firm what the national climate assessment. The IPC reports and other reports say, and so, essentially, these are not sort of some random person in their basement eating. Oreo cookies and sipping Milt per providing their pins on climate chains. These are scientists that have studied this that have weighed in. And so, I think that's very important to understand what do you see in terms of this discussion that we've seen in the AM s from time to time? I've been away from the organization little bit at the leadership level in terms of the broadcast community within the AM s and their viewpoint on climate change because there was a time period, anywhere. There's this question about, oh, AMS broadcasters, or some of them are skirt contrarian on climate change. Are we starting to see any movement on that? Or have you paid any attention to that aspect of the problem? Yes, I believe that, that, that has changed as we discussed before they're always going to be people who have a certain perspective. But from talking to the broad Constas since I've been in this position and back when I was a counselor, I really feel that the broadcast community now provides guidance that the weight of the evidence is that the oath is warming. And as we say, in the statement, the, the indications are extremely likely that human evident human influences being the Doman cause of the observed warming, and I believe that that's what the broadcasters are, you know, the this is consistent with the views of the Bej already of the broadcasters. And that's what they're teaching will giving to the public. And welcome back to the weather geeks podcast. I'm Dr Marshall shepherd from the university of Georgia, and I'm speaking with professor Jenny Evans. From Penn State university is the current president of the American meteorological, society and director of Penn State's institute for cyber science. War. You have a big event, coming up in January, at the centennial for the organization, the AM s I think this a, it's a really special time to be president of the AMS. Tell us about what you and your colleagues, I know that you have a committee in place that sort of trying to put together an epic centennial AMS annual meeting. So what is your theme? What are your plans? And what are you finding is your challenges and things that you're excited about? So as I said before, and as you just notice. We get to promote AL's vision of the field as president..

"Christmas day and as a young child thinking about would Santa get to those kids, and what would happen made a big impression. So when I was thinking about my doctoral thesis. That's when I came back to tropical cyclones let's talk a little bit about that, because you're one of the leading experts in the world on tropical cyclones, which is the broader class of terminology terminology that we use for hurricanes typhoons, and cyclones tells a little bit about what your expertise over the years has been and tropical cyclones and some of the contributions that you've made. Well, a couple of things I've done that I think differentiate me are I had a doctoral student come from the media Marcus shod, and he came because bemusing were really impacted by these systems. We call sub tropical cyclones for the Muda. They looked exactly like a tropical cyclone that to the National Hurricane Center, they didn't quite meet the definition. And so they weren't naming them turn that later because I think that's a great point before you kind of continue on what your story, can you tell the listeners what a sub sub tropical cyclone is because I bet they've heard them in recent you know, we've had a couple in recent years. So sub tropical cyclone isn't a strong the surface as it is a little above the ground tropical cyclones strongest right at the ground, and it's also not quite as symmetric and the maximum winds are a bit further from the center, it's a bit different win structure. And so. Mark came to do his PHD to try and understand subtropical cyclones, and whether it made sense for them to be brought to the attention of the Hurricane Center Rulli because the National Hurricane Center really helps coordinate with the weather services in the Carribean. Right. And so that's you've done some work. And I know we've cited some of your work in some recent research we've.

"And now the official weather forecast from our award winning staff meteorologist, well, let's clear up the fake news. You've been hearing. We're gonna have seven days of rain in the bay area. Here's the way, it's going to work. Take notes we have some patchy dense fog again this morning just like yesterday morning, so please drive carefully because we're this pops up. It gets thick really fast. So we've got that that will lift as the morning progresses because the winds are going to start to blow and stir it up a bit. The winds are blowing ahead of the next central system. Now that next will bring rain to the north bay. I. Mid day that rain will start to spread across the Golden Gate. It into the rest of the bay area. Just in time for the seasons commutes, the rain should be on the lighter side. Now this cold front will fall apart overnight. We'll have some lingering showers Saturday boarding. That's it. It'll be dry Saturday afternoon through Sunday. It's act it made it continue to be dry into Monday. There's a week storm coming in from the south that might bring some showers into the area Monday. And maybe even a few light showers Tuesday. But then again, maybe not it's a very very weak store. This storm everyone's paying attention to or at least they should be at our listeners it out to do it. That will arrive Wednesday and Thursday, and that's the storm that could last right into next weekend. American meteorological society, we're staff meteorologist on talk radio five sixty.
