"6 80 Wcbm. Murders 41 out 92266 80 Way have a full bank of calls here. I'm going to ask our listeners and our callers the hold on So I can introduce a very special guest, Mr. Mark Simon, the a service officer. Mark. How are you? Glad to see you. Thank you very much. I appreciate that. Let me start off by saying that Memorial Day. I understand many people like to have their barbecues and watch the baseball cames and all that. And you know, I've done that before. I'm fine with that. But it's important for all of us to remember that Memorial days about those service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, those that are not living anymore in all our wars. As you said, Beginning with the Revolutionary War, the numbers are staggering, and those surviving members Uh, they are reminded of it, not only each and every day, but especially during this time of the year. And so I just wanted to say All right, so all them thank them for their service. Those of the survivors thank them on, and I would just say that I would dedicate my conversation to them and to those that are with the city more. Hopefully there pop they may be listening from above. Mark, Will you tell our audience what you do? It's a very important job, and I want you to Express it in the In any terms. You you feel necessary? Certainly. I have a member of the American Legion Post, 1 16 and Righteous County, Maryland. I've been a member of the American Legion for 23 consecutive years. That is after I served in the Navy from 1981 to 1989. And some time after that, I joined the American Legion on Don't know about six years ago. Well, I've been writing a column about that at veteran's benefits and our monthly newsletter for about 12 years. Six years ago. Not feedback. Positive feedback could come in where they were looking to appoint somebody as a service officer. So I was appointed to the service officer on what service officers do is they provide the best service to veterans and their families as they look to find. Ondo obtain the benefits that not always earned and are entitled to since August. 2015 service officers throughout the United States have raised over, I would say Almost $10 million in compensation and benefits to the veterans and their families on duh. This level of accomplishment was only possible by submitting well grounded claims on D leaking those claims, uh, do their medical records and substantiate ng them for service connected or otherwise. Connected disability on duh. We also do is what I also do is I take calls from veterans. On die later, I could give out my phone number, because, um, what I do is I'm able to speak with the veteran or someone who takes care of a veteran and navigate them through the maze of what they think is. You know the red tape and all the waiting in holding and Okay, we'll transfer you hear will transfer to this department that department the other apartment, but I expedite those matters in a very, very timely and inefficient way. In that way, I can link them up with the necessary websites and other phone numbers and other information that allows them with my help, if needed was that's when the service officer to obtain those benefits in a timely and efficient manner. I'm happy to report that in the past week or so I was able to help around four different veterans who were in need of certain things. It was just by directing them to the right places to go. And I was happy that they called me back. Tell me how how oft how grateful they were that I was able to just do that for them, because so many veterans just don't understand. How the system works and what what they need to do in order to obtain the benefits that they've heard it in vital to on ever since I started giving my number out on the radio up and inundated with calls, and they're very happy to know that a person like me can make it so easy for them. Well, that's great. And I want to say publicly that you help me this week. Uh, just Got your number from J. Harris's show You called in. Thea Sunday morning show up..

They also got help from a guy named Scott Williams. The Maritime Archaeological Society was definitely team effort. And then real and was so grateful for what Lee and Sean and everyone did. He was generous in his praise, Generous in sharing his family's story for the American Legion Monument. I'd say it's already mission accomplished. Another lieutenant J. G. "1000 horse power 0 to 60 in three seconds. It is hard to believe. Isn't it hard to believe that if they looked like those old timers sitting get 0 to 60 in three hours, I mean, it looked like those looked like they would fall apart if they moved that fast. I just think that the whole electric thing is inevitable because the technology is superior that you could produce 1000 horse powers in some big contraption like a Hummer and get it to go 0 to 60 in three seconds can only be down if you don't have a transmission. Able to supply all of her power instantaneously. Now I don't know what kind of tires they're going to put out that because of what I think of those old timers. They look like they weighed £85,000. Imagine going 0 to 60. Okay, fine. 0 to 60. The one time you do it because you have to go into the tire story. Get new tyres after you've done it the first time. To those dragsters. How often you know that when they called him bird outs, they burn you. You know you burned the tyres out her drag races they slap on new tyres every time they go to what track some of Yeah, I mean, so So so, So there is that I did. I mean, I think if you buy the really high speed rated tires they based on all these letters of disease and ages and V's and all that stuff. The higher the speed rating, the less they last. A lot of good times in the last 40,000. That's a crappy tire. It lasts forever because it's got all this resistance sided. But if you want to have a tire That's a really good one. You just got to spend a fortune in order to get it. That's the weird thing about life. The stuff that's the most expensive is the stuff that lasts the least log. You know what I've said the stuff that it saves Truitt horses, the ones that go on and they could run forever and never get hurt. You know why they're slow? Him. We're talking about earlier in the programme about Milwaukee Democrats in African American districts are refusing to attend the CPD debate, too. Abate their African American Republican challengers. I want to credit the state Republican Party. They're not letting the issue drop. There is a news conference scheduled for tomorrow morning. All five candidates are going to be there. Tim Rogers, that congressional candidate El Cerro Deacon, who is the Senate state Senate candidate of the three Assembly candidates Orlando Owens, Roselle Cocks and Amy Eisenbach, who is the fifth candidate rotting, not regard. Carrot. African American. They're all going to be there, and they're gonna be joined by Andrew hitters. There was constant Republican chairman and former Lieutenant governor Rebecca Kleefisch. They're going to hold a news conference tomorrow morning. At the Milwaukee Republican Field office at AM OK at North What? To me. Most noteworthy about that story is what Obviously the fact that the Republicans are gonna try to press the issue and try to force the media to cover this. Picking what will hold a news conference. That's the one thing that could get even the most moronic and competent hack of an assignment editor to know that something is going on. Even if they haven't stumbled onto the story. Yet we'll schedule a news conference. Maybe they'll send somebody over. That's the first part. But what's the second part? I kind of glossed over deliberately. That there is a Republican field office in the center central city of Milwaukee. They had not done this kind of thing of the past, as they say under President Trump. And under the current generation of Republicans, really, for the first time in decades, you're seeing them actually trying to compete for the African American vote. And as I've been explaining, they're not trying to get 50% of the black vote. They're just trying to get the numbers higher. And wherever it is that you grow your numbers easier relevant if you're able to grow them, But the greatest opportunity to grow your vote number is in an area where you have no voters. Growing. The Republican vote in New Berlin is hard because most people who live in the Berliner already Republican growing the Republican vote in the central city, virtually every human being walking around is the potential for growth because hardly any of them have voted for Republicans. It's a point that many of us have been trying to make for quite some time. So they are whether what works or not, I don't know. But they are competing for the black vote, and they have some issues that they could work. Press that case want to remind everybody that bit at Milwaukee, the online auction the Ws of the five other I. Don't you like hanging around all those Illinois people? Well well and that all that's up there. 50% yet. I haven't been a door county in decades. I haven't just have it. I don't have to think the last time I doubt I'd be that was in door County a lot when I was a kid because we didn't live too far from there, but The other thing is, you know, door county goes all the way down. It's almost like Sturgeon Bay is way far away down on the arm of door County, But it's Egg harbor and all that stuff those of the cool places that people like you go people like you that Smith would spend all this money to go to these places, etcetera thes, Illinois people that hanging around in downtown surgeon while some of a barber But if he goes way down there, I mean, you could be a door county and not be a door county if you know what I mean. You know what I mean? Yeah, I'm not talking about that, anyway. Fin at Milwaukee dot com. What do you bid out that Maybe you could get this for cheaper than what you normally get. Yeah, Except don't you like it? Don't you, like go like in October something and all the offseason because you are cheap. What in the summer. How much did you spend? Was it lower this year because of cold bitter. I heard it was higher that because people couldn't do anything that door condo is packed all summer. That's us. Yeah, Paul told me that and I've been hearing that from everybody. That door County in Lake Geneva had some of the best summers ever once the bars and restaurants were able to open once the locked owns ended, and so on. They did spectacularly well. And in part, Illinois was under such a heavier lock down than we had all the more reason that they all headed up there. I said I would do a little bit of a brain buster of a quiz. You know, everybody is that does these lists magazines do the list? Best place to live best? This best that top this top That is so odd. The thing that Forbes is on top of his How much money you make How successful your businesses and so on. For instance, they always do these lists of what's the value and then they listen. They come up with their edits and estimate because it's not a publicly traded company. What's the value of one of the most valuable baseball teams football teams basketball team said. They'll put their best gases to what they're worth, and you never know what something's worth until you put it on the market to try to sell it, but There. Estimate is based on the best criteria that they can come up with. For what A sports franchise is worse. For instance, the Packers air right in the middle of the NFL, the Packers Art would be almost impossible to sell. Because of the structure of the team. Being a nonprofit, shareholder based organization. Theoretically, it could be sold. You'd have to change the bylaws because you know if you would get the money if the Packers are sold, according to the by allies, maybe they did change it. Recently, but forever, you know who would get the money? An American Legion post in Green Bay because they set the thing up in 1940 guys guys through in $3 a person and they gotta think. Well, if we ever sell that the Legion hall is going to get it as of a few years ago that was still written in there. I don't know if they've changed it to put it into a foundation or something or another, but the only for four or five people to want the package to be sold The members of that leech up they might be able to upgrade and put out a better fish fry. Anyway. Forbes does all these lists. I think the Cowboys of the most valuable NFL franchise they estimated part of it is ownership of your stadium. If you're in the stadium free and clear that's an asset that other teams don't have and so on. Well, In the current issue of the magazine. They've got another one of these lists..

A Ward of the Probate Court
"Welcome back my friends to the big book podcast. My name is Howard and I'm an alcoholic sober since nineteen eighty eight one day at a time in this episode the Thirteenth Story from the personal stories section of the first edition of alcoholics anonymous published in nineteen thirty nine. It's entitled Award of the Probate Court and was printed only in the first edition of the big book. This relatively short story provides a glimpse of the formative years obey when old timers were those with two or three years sober but whose perseverance and dedication made possible a solid foundation for the entire a movement and now the original story award of the probate court at about the time. My graduation from high school a State University was established in our city on the call for an office assistant. I was recommended by my superintendent and got the position. I was rather his choice in pride but a few years later I met him in a nearby city and panhandle him for two bucks for drinks. I grew with the institution and advanced in position. I took a year off for ten minutes at an Engineering College at College. I refrain from any hilarious celebrating. Drinking War was declared. I was away from home on business at the state capital where my mother couldn't raise objections and I enlisted overseas. I was on five fronts from Alsace. Up to the North Sea upon relief from the lines back in the rest area being rouge and Cognac helped in the letdown from trying circumstances. I was introduced to the exhilaration of intoxication. The old spirit. What the Hell Heine may have you tagged. Didn't help towards any moderation in drinking then. We had many casualties but one of the real catastrophes was the lost of a POW. A lieutenant who died from the. Dt's over there after it was all over. This didn't slow me up and back in the states I had a big fling before returning home. My plans were to cover up with my mother and the girl I was to marry that I had become addicted to alcohol but exposed the fact on the day. Our engagement was announced on the way I met a training camp. Buddy got drunk and miss the party booze had got over. Its first real blow on me. I saw her briefly that night but didn't have the guts to face. Her people the Romance was over to forget I engaged in super active life and social fraternal and civic promotion of my community. This all outside my position. In the president's Office of the State University I became a leader. The big flash in the PAN are organized and was first commander of the American Legion Post. Raised funds and built a fine memorial. Clubhouse was secretary a belks. Eagles Chamber of Commerce City Club and active as an operator officer in political circles. I was always a good fellow and control my drinking indulging only in sprees and private clubs or away from home I was deposed from the executive position at the college by political change in the governorship of the state I knew the sales manager of Securities Division of a large utility corporation in Wall Street and started to sell securities the issues and the market were good and I had a fine opportunity. I was away from home and I began to drink heavily to get away from my drinking associates. I managed to be transferred to another city. But this didn't help booze had me. My sales and commissions diminished. I remained almost in a continuous stupor on my drawing account until I was released. I braced up got sober and made a good connection with the steamship agency. A concern promoting European travel and study at most all important universities in Europe. Those were the bathtub gin days and for drinking in about my office. I held out in this position for only a year. I was now engaged to be married. And fortunately I got another position as a salesman for a large corporation I worked hard was successful and my drinking became. I was married and my wife soon learned that I was no social drinker. I tried hard to control it but could not. There were many separations and she would return home. I would make pledges in a sincere effort and then my top would blow off again. I began here to take sanitarium treatments to satisfy my wife and my folks I had a great capacity for drink and work with the help of Turkish baths BROMO SELTZER ASPIRIN. I to the job. I became top notch or in the entire salesforce of the country. I was assigned to more special territory and finally into the market of keenest competition. I was top rate and salary one bonus awards and was bringing in the volume but there was always the drawback. My excessive drinking made at times I was called in once twice and warned. Finally I wasn't to be tolerated any longer. Although I was doing a good job I had lasted five and a half years. I lost my wife along with my job and find income. This was a terrible jolt I tried for a hookup but I had a black eye marring a good record. I became discouraged and depressed. I saw relief with booze. There began the four black years of my life. I had returned home to the community where I had been so prominent these were dry days still and I hung out at the clubs with bars. I got so I would last on a job but a few days just until I could get an advance for drinks. I began to get entangled with the law arrested for driving while intoxicated and drunk and disorderly conduct my folks heard of the cure at the state hospital. I was picked up drunk and sent there by the probate court. I was administered. Parral to hide and came to in receiving ward among lunatics. I was transferred to another word of less violent cases and I found a little group of alcoholics and junkers dope addicts. I learned from them the seriousness of being award of the probate court. I felt then if I ever got released. The old devil alcohol would never get me in a jam like this again in times of great distress. Such as this I would pray to God for help. I was fortunate and was released after eleven days and nights brought up in the laughing academy bughouse. That was enough. I wanted no more of it. I took a job as a manager of a club and put myself to the old acid test. I was going to really assert my willpower. I even tended bar part of the time. But never imbibed a bit. This lasted about three months. I went to an annual convention of my overseas division and came to locked up in a cheap hotel room. New shoes suit coat hat and purse missing. I must have slipped badly then followed much drinking in trouble. After a few arrests for intoxication the law decided another sojourn to the State Hospital would tame me. They jumped the stay this time from eleven days to eleven weeks. It was getting tough for me. I came out in good physical condition and held the fear of getting probate again thinking the siege might be eleven months. I got another job. Stay Dry for about two months and off to the races again. I became terribly weak. Couldn't eat and try to get nourishment from booze and mostly only bootleg that one time. I just made it to a hospital and another time. A police patrol took me to the hospital. Instead of jail. I suffered badly from insomnia as many as three shots in the arm had no effect I would get in shape and back at it again. I was going to battle to finish. The time came when I was to be paid. My soldiers bonus I had the limit or maximum coming friends. Advise my folks to send me to a veteran's hospital before I got this money in my hands. I was pro baited again. Held in a county jail for two weeks and sent again to the asylum. This was my summer resort for three months. I was on the waiting list for the Veterans Hospital but I got into such wonderful physical condition from eating and working out of doors that I was released. I reached home full of resentment against my folks for their having my money tied up in a guardianship I went out and got saturated and landed in jail. I had been free from the asylum for about eight hours behind the bars again. So soon this was bad however I was freed again the next day and this was my last confinement with the

"On Thursday. We ventured to Merrimack New Hampshire where people to judge was holding a campaign event at American Legion Post Ninety eight when we arrived. Cars were filling up the parking lot of a school across the street and lining the sides of the road outside the American Legion building. A freezing rain was falling as we waited in line. And that's where we met Tricia O'Neil from Baltimore Baltimore Maryland. You came all the way from Baltimore I I would I on Monday flew back. Were you surprised at how well he did in Iowa. Not In the least it was my third trip to Iowa to volunteer the group Barnstorm for the eljay Jay dinner out there. Kind of like your McIntyre She Han we had people from all fifty states there. We had twenty one hundred people who paid their own way to come to have that showing so I wasn't surprised we had a negative flake. Great in terms of people coming out to volunteer E-EXPECT YOU'RE GONNA lose thirty percent sent and instead at one. They had sixty more people than they planned on. So the enthusiasm was there so we weren't surprised. Are you at all frustrated. Though that take the race hasn't been declared yet. Do you think that hurts mayor. Pete there's no sense in worrying about it at this point it's just onward you know he has is is rules of the road and joy is one of them And so we're just joyous we know how we did. I was a caucus observer and saw the process for the first first time and those pieces of paper. I've got photographs of on my phone. So we know what the numbers are but being angry or frustrated about. It isn't gonNA change the outcome. What did you see when you're in Iowa among Iowa voters that made you think like okay? This is this is real. The most obvious thing was the table. They have same day registration the station and it was the table where people could go and register for vote for the first time or register change their party and I saw at least thirty people do that because I was standing in the hallway saying if you're already registered you have the fast pass come on down and that people would tell us that they needed to register and and it was mostly us because everybody in the hallway. Volunteers were all pete people. It could have been anybody but there were so many of us and so I watch them right there his line about future for her Republicans they they were now former Republicans and they were there because a pizza message and they went downstairs and voted. So are you going to volunteer here in New Hampshire. Oh Yeah I'm here till I'm here till Monday so I drove up. I went to out foreign policy event last night for Pete in DC and then. I drove overnight to get here a little further back in line. We met David Siefert who was still kicking the tires as they say? What brings you to people to judge? Event one to hear what he has to say. See Him up close. See if all the hype is resonates now. Have you been a booted supporter or are you deciding on who to vote for deciding and can you tell us how your decision processes going who are deciding between right now. Amy Maybe Pete Maybe Mike Bloomberg her Bloomberg's not on the ballot. Yes all the more reason to consider him based on what's going on in Iowa. What may Ah that go on here? When you say what's going on in Iowa what do you? What do you mean about how confusing it is or what the results were? Whatever the tentative results it's alter yeah in terms of a moderate Democrat running your concern is getting a candidate? That's not what Bernie Sanders. Yes yeah okay. What about Joe Biden? He was supposed to be that assertive. Moderate centrist unless things get good for him here South Carolina the Vata. That's why I think someone like Bloomberg we'll have that opportunity. Do you think he could that mayor. Pete can catch on in New Hampshire. Sure look at this crowd. I mean this is more than I ever anticipated so clearly has some kind of traction here. What are are you looking for today from him? Do you want to hear or see. I'd like to get a sense of where he is in terms of how close to the middle. Oh the center as opposed to extremes of the spectrum. Unfortunately the longer we waited outside the more obvious views became. We weren't gonNA make it in and sure enough somebody for mayor. Pete's team let the crowd outside no that the space was at capacity. We decided to head back. Act Concord New Hampshire to hit the street looking for more voters and even in the rain. Granite staters were willing to stop and talk. I like a lot of the candidates. But I'm old and the age of Bernie and Joe. I really like both of them but it really worries me. And I like people but it doesn't feel right. I don't have a sense that I'm excited about anybody body. So that's a big problem. Not Give Biden to try you know but mostly now no series. I A lot of wishful thinking. They might view you know his some. Some of the things he wants to do is just it's too far out there. Where's the funding? I've Seen Bernie Sanders so I've Seen Elizabeth Warren and I've driven by Joe Biden on highway three times. I leaning towards a Mayor Pete at the moment people to judge but I think anybody it would be parades. Of course. It's important to stress that we've been on the ground here just in southern New Hampshire and these voices are by no means a representative sample of potential primary voters across the state but one thing does seem clear. Despite the controversy that continues to swirl around the I will caucuses folks. Here New Hampshire seem to already have moved on they don't need an official re canvass or final party certified winner to tell them what happened on Monday night right Bernie Sanders and Pete Buddha judge where the winners Joe Biden was the big loser and for now Elizabeth Warren and Amy Club had been relegated to the back burner. Now the fact that Mike Bloomberg's name was mentioned is another sign of the instability of this contest whether the former New York City mayor can get traction and delegates in the march third Super Tuesday states remains remains a big question mark but if Biden limps out of New Hampshire the pressure and focus will be on Bloomberg be the one to potentially unite the Anti Bernie constituency at Bloomberg cast approve. He can win over skeptical African American voters who may not be satisfied with his recent apologies about police tactics while he was mayor and can he convince older blue collar. Voters who have a history with Joe Biden that he's an acceptable alternative. I on New Hampshire normally have been critical in helping call the field and pick a front runner if if not the ultimate winner of the Democratic nomination this year that seems less certain than ever. So when are we gonNA know who's going to win this thing. Here's my advice. Accept except that this is the most unpredictable and unconventional primary campaign. We've seen in years or at least in recent memory that means we need to stop trying to make this fit into a traditional box and just go along on the crazy ride. That is this Democratic primary..
