"AP's sports and Mike Reeves, it was a frantic finish at the Indianapolis 500, our Tom McKay reports. Josef Newgarden used a one lap shootout to grab the lead from 2022 champ Marcus Ericsson to win the Indy 500. You know, I wasn't looking to take anyone else out of the race, but I was going to put my car on the line to win. And I was either going to win the race or I was going to end up in the wall. Newgarden driving for team owner Roger Penske survived a chaotic final 40 miles, which saw the race stop three times for Rex. Major League Baseball the rays win a wild one over the Dodgers in Tampa Bay, correspondent Steve Carney provides the details. The Tampa Bay Rays used a 7th inning RBI ground out by wander Franco to break a ten ten tie and defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 11 to ten. Both starters got hit around as Gavin stone allowed 7 runs in two innings of work, while Josh Fleming allowed ten runs in 6 innings, including 5 home runs, Tampa Bay finishes at ten game home stands 7 and three, while the Dodgers complete their longest road trip of 2023 with a four and 6 Mark. "Cooper Chris well earned his first major league win as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 9 to three. "The Padres hit two two out homers to defeat the Yankees 5 to one. Randy Vasquez making his major league debut for New York had held the Padres to two hits and no runs with two out in the 5th, but he then hit Jake cronenworth and Juan Soto followed with his tenth home of the year to put San Diego up to nothing. The next inning with two out Ron marinaccio walked off the nola Fernando Tatís Jr. then blasted his 8th home run for a four zero lead. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's contract reportedly to be extended to March 2027
"Agreed on the framework of a three year contract extension that will keep him in place until 2027. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim irsay confirmed Tuesday at the league meetings. Goodell's current deal expires in 2024. He has been commissioner of the league since replacing Paul tagliabue in 2006. Largest US gay rights group issues Florida travel advisory for what they say are anti-LGBTQ+ laws
"The largest gay rights group in the country is issuing an advisory against traveling to Florida. The Human Rights Campaign is joining a group that includes the NAACP, the league of united Latin American citizens. The Florida immigrant coalition and equality Florida in warning newly passed laws and policies in Florida may pose risks to minorities, immigrants, and gay travelers. The Human Rights Campaign is not calling for a boycott of Florida, but is highlighting laws passed by Florida's Republican led legislature and signed by governor Ron DeSantis. They say are hostile to the LGBTQ+ community, restrict abortion access and allow floridians to carry concealed weapons without a permit. Soccer stadium stampede in El Salvador leaves 12 dead
"A stampede by soccer fans at a quarterfinals league match in El Salvador has left at least a dozen dead, and many more injured. The crush happened when fans pushed through one of the entrance gates at monumental stadium in kuska clan, one fan said one of the gates was closed too early, leaving many angry fans with tickets stranded outside. Those fans eventually knocked the gate down, play was suspended about 16 minutes into the match when fans in the stands waving frantically began getting the attention of those on the field. Dozens made it onto the field where they received medical treatments. Speaking at the scene, national civil police commissioner Mauricio ariza said there would be a criminal investigation into the incidents. Approximately 400 to 500 people gathered and in the eagerness to watch the game, sometimes wanted to open the gates, and when they opened it, a small forms, some of us call it a stampede. "Pro football Hall of Famer Jim Brown, the unstoppable running back who retired at the peak of his brilliant career to become an actor, as well as a prominent civil rights advocate during the 1960s has died. "The pitch clock has sped up baseball as hoped, and it might be leading to more exciting endings, too. A quarter of the way through Major League Baseball's first season with the pitch timer, relief pitchers seemed to be bearing most of the stress from it was saved conversions dropping to 61.4% from 67.8% at a similar point last season. Cleveland hasn't been bad to you. No, Cleveland can hit. I can't believe it. They're the only team in the American League getting over two 50. And you know, there's 7th in OPS and all baseball at a 30. I mean, we all thought it was just those Ramirez, but Owen Miller's doing a nice job. Andre's him and his, I mean, he was one of two short stops they got four Lindor he's I played Lindor. They can hit they can hit. They can hit up and go at lineup. It's really the pitching that hasn't been what we thought. Bieber has not been what he had been, obviously, was a so young one, but you expect him to at least be very good starter. Yeah, we thought it would be more pitching for the Indians. The white socks to me though, they're a surprise. I mean, obviously they've had a lot of guys get hurt. That's a killer when you lose Lin. They lost giolito a couple times already. You know, I've had mankind out. You've had Robert out. Jimenez is out. It's been rough, but they have not performed either. I mean, Hendricks is, I mean, going in, you look at Hendrix and hater is the two best reliever in baseball. I mean, haters been lights out. Hendrix has really gotten blown up a few times. I don't expect that to continue, but you've had that go on and also in terms of their hitting and basically getting a good year out of Anderson moncada and Vaughn. Everybody else is not even a brave and grand not hitting. And you know, I'm worried about them. I really am. We'll see on the twins that you write about buxton. I mean, what a terrific talent when he's on the field such a difference. Yeah. There's no question when he is healthy. Man, there may not be a more explosive baseball player going right now. And Major League Baseball. I got a circle back to the national league west. I somehow skipped them. Padres. It's my vision. I think I got so sidetracked talking about Manny MVP and may. I lost my way there. But national league west, Dodgers, Padres setting the pace, they're tied to top the division, giants there behind the Diamondbacks then in fourth rockies and last all above 500 right now, Padres just had a terrific series. They could have very well have swept the braves. If they didn't give up four in the 8th of the game before, yes, yesterday on Saturday. But they come back and win a tough start with Kyle Wright, had it going yesterday. They have played as good a baseball as anybody in Major League Baseball without Fernando Tatís Jr. and it starts with their starting pitching. The Dodgers also playing Dodger baseball, although just lost three or four to the Philadelphia Phillies. Yeah, you're absolutely right about the pie raise. I mean, you know the pad rates, I almost forgot about tatis, they're playing so well and I know, right? I want to call them our Padres now since I had them in the playoffs in a very tough league. I mean, I think that the national league is a deep, so I think actually just getting into the playoffs is very difficult in the national league. I had to leave out the Giants, the Phillies, which I wasn't happy about. I think those are good teams. American League, I happily left out of 15 teams, but, you know, I think San Diego has got among the best pitching and baseball, probably the deepest AJ's always acquiring somebody, you know, even when we thought they were the deepest, here comes mania. So I mean, you know, he's done a good job at this point. They look very, very good. I mean, the Dodgers are still the favorite, but to me, the rockies are a surprise in the boy that Diamondbacks. What a huge surprise they came in here. They had one guy betting over 200 when they were in New York and that was Seth beer. And then he went on like an over 30 shriek after that. And they're managing to win and I mean, I think the hiring of Brent strum. I mean, the guy must be a magician or something because they're starting pitching is completely turned around. Even Bumgarner that I shouldn't say even because obviously he was a great pitcher with the Giants, but I mean, normally you don't go uptick in your velocity at this stage in your career, so he's at a turnaround Zach Davies who was not at all good last year he's doing well and gallon. I mean, gallon is one of the best pitchers in baseball right now. People thought he had that he's potential, but it was already traded twice. So they figured something out or I should give him the credit. He figured something out and they're pitching looks actually very, very good. I mean, that division is going to be tough though, so they're not going to contend, but let's give them credit. To me, that's the biggest surprise. More than the angels because the angels to me, you know, if you've got trial in your attorney and they're healthy, you know, there is obviously a big potential there. And I believe Cody said it would be the Astros, and he was spot on. And the Astros have won 17 of their last 21 Alvarez is every time I turn on the TV, he's hitting the home run. This is not all that surprising for the Astros. I think you've been on the Astros from the very beginning if I'm not mistaken as well. Yes, I had them in the World Series, right? And then two weeks ago, I was switched off and I'm glad that Cody picked up with the correct prediction there that it would be the Astros. We'll see. I mean, obviously 17 of 21s pretty good. They're pitching in outstanding. I think they're fourth or 5th in baseball, which is not surprised at all. And pitching and they have most of those lost some good kickstarts, obviously we know with Correa out. They've got Pena now in who's been really good. They look Springer. They really didn't replace him. I know dusty wanted Marte. A lot of people probably wanted more today, but you know, they still have a really good team. So I mean, on paper on the president, it seems like there should be the favorite. I don't think that's a surprise. Those other teams are interesting though. I mean, Seattle was a popular pick. I had them going to the playoffs after watching them. I know they want two out of three of the mets. I'm questioning my sanity there. We'll see. I've always been a known as a Mariners detractor. I probably should have stayed that way. We will see. I mean, obviously, Crawford's doing great ty France, that's your guy, you picked that out when I think he was in grammar school or something. We started out him. And so good give you credit there. You know, and the angels they're the most fun team too. I always put them on. I got the two TVs working so early. I'll look at the two New York teams. It's in some of the New York Post, but late. You know, I used to look at the Padres, the Dodgers, all different teams, angels, you know, they've got Otani, they've got trout, they've got this award guy doing fantastic. They are a fun, fun team. I don't know if they're going to make it. I mean, I still think the ice storms win that division, but the angels are a lot of fun to watch. Yeah, now the angels, the angels have become very exciting. And they're getting pitching. Will it last? I think we'll have to wait and see, but certainly they've been to me one of the most exciting teams in baseball to watch and watch on TV. The AL lease, we talked a little bit about Aaron judge, but the Yankees as a whole are look well. They look pretty solid right now. And judge is healthy Stan's healthy Rizzo's doing his thing. We thought this division would have been was going to be with the NL west is, but this could vision might be over before it even gets started. If Toronto doesn't really kind of pick up the pace a little bit. Yeah, it's kind of shocking. I mean, I thought Toronto was the favorite in that division. I thought they'd win that division. Easily. We had Aaron Boonen right before the season on a hot stove and I basically said to him, look, you're managing a third place team and later I did apologize for that because it was probably a rude thing to say not only wrong but the right thing to say and you.

"You'll get some of the stack. Gas numbers advanced metrics. They didn't treat him well. The argument then was well danny. Janssen isn't catching right. And his stats. Splits are so different with janssen behind the plate versus someone. Like reese mcguire albuquerque. It was danny janssen behind the plate in the first game of that double header. He was catching ryu in that. Game and review gave up seven runs in less than three innings of work so i was always skeptical on that argument. You can look at the numbers. Yes maybe it favors him in. Yes you look at the argument that like he just knows this guy better you know were you. It's very hard to think along with him on the mound but janssen does his best at doing that. You can make that argument. But it didn't work out this time. I really don't think that's the case with him. And i think it's a serious consideration like you. I think i hate to say it. But i think his status as a player his history as a pitcher requires him to be on that roster at the moment at least from what we know as much as i wanna be partial to the stats that we have in front of us and the trends from the last two months. He has been there before he's gone to the postseason countless of times with the dodgers he's lead them to the postseason in the first place so i would put him in that situation but at the same time i think the numbers over the next three weeks are going to be very dependent in that case the blue jays. Get to the lds or they get to the sob very interesting conversation to have later down the line but another thing to talk about you mentioned. It is vital mirror juniors sneaking up on the triple crown again. I think we'd all at the start of the season. We're all hopeful about it. We saw the stats even though if we didn't think they were sustainable. We were hopeful about it. He is creeping up into triple crown. Watch now again because he had his forty fourth home run of the season today so he is officially tied for the major league. Lead with shohei ohtani. He leads the american league in batting average at three nineteen. He's four points ahead of yuli. Excuse me with rafael devers. He has one two has one of seven and salvador perez is inbetween them so entirely possible. He is very close. You know if he has a good last few weeks. Shohei otani slow down a Safer salvador perez been really hop. I think he's slowed down as well in vlad heating up and staying hot so i think as far as average and homers go. I would on him finishing first in those two categories. I think the only thing that he might miss out on these rbi and we can talk about how much rbi doesn't matter but if we're looking at the crown of course it's important metric and i think it's possible i. I don't think it's going to happen. But i think it's very possible. It's very exciting to watch. And if you look at where we were with guerrero you know two three weeks ago in the middle of his very bad slump and our concerns about him and our frustrations with him It's nice to see him..

"Gotten to the point where it just feels like like. It doesn't feel real like these are almost like more than video game numbers of what we seen. Just the circumstances of what's happened In the series first of all we all know it was a rough start to the series. And just again that you'd you definitely want to forget. Obviously it was kind of an off night from robbie ray and really the only take away that i think we'll all remember. Look back on and laugh at now. Was just the weird exchange between brandon hyde and robbie ray early on in the game it looked like robbie ray was like almost like confused at one point but i don't know what nobody really knew what the heck was going on. I guess we found out after that there is some sort of miscommunication or the orioles guy. I don't know just paranoid with something. They thought robbie ray was doing robbie ray was talking about how nobody was hitting it. There sliders it was just a bizarre start to the series and obviously a letdown. The only good thing that came out of that night was the red sox and yankees both losing so essentially Nothing really happened. In terms of the standings the only thing that really happened was the mariners and the seattle mariners. An oakland as gaining a game on the jays. And everybody else but that Looks a lot better where you look at it now but just at the time. That's pretty much. The only thing that happened but then of course you go into a double header You know you know that at this point all right the best you can do. Is a series win win three in a row. It was definitely doable. It's definitely what happened. And it doesn't start off good with engine ru having. I think the shortest outing officially as a blue jay to third seven hundred runs his era. And yet i mean like this past weekend besides obviously the opening game of the series. We saw probably the craziest double header. I think we've ever kind of witnessed in these last two days or happened on saturday and of course today you know as much as maybe the jays were kind of giving a nod to the nfl for the first day of the season. Twenty two seven final score feels like a football score. I guess maybe that's what was going on but another abomination all we can and runs. And yeah i was about to mention it to but don't look now. They are currently tied for that wildcard spot and things are looking good. They are in officially in a playoff spot for the first time maybe since april or may be the first time of the season. I'm not even sure but it feels great to see them there and You know this is the best part of the season right now with this team and it's the most fun to watch them and they're having a good time. Yeah it dream to be watching this team right now and you know except for the first game which is of course forgettable in this. They lose the first game which he can make all the excuses you want about them..

"I don't know if it happens this year, but it needs to and I know that that irritates half the people listening, but, um, I'm so over watching pictures hit. It's one of my least favorite things about baseball. I grew up in National League fan. I grew up a Cardinals fan. And then you know, I I ended up watching a lot of American League baseball in college and then working with the White Sox. I saw that Z. All I saw primarily was American League ball. It's just way better. It's just and I used to make the same arguments. About pitchers hitting that everybody else makes in defense of it, and I realized all those arguments are bad. All those arguments or bad there's there's not a good reason to allow pictures to hit and they want to hit is not a good reason to allow them to hit. They just can't do it, and it's Okay again. Let me rephrase. It's not that they can't do it. It's just that the deck is stacked against them to do it. We'll think about your favorite hitter who goes through a slump. And it happens to everybody. Every single good hitter in baseball. Maybe not Mike Trout, but everybody else they go through slumps. How do you get out of a slump? Lawrence? Um, you keep hitting, you keep hitting. What do pictures not get to do? They don't get to hit. That's right. You get hit today you get that you get to it. Bats every five days. How are you supposed to be able to hit if you get too big league? It bats every five days. Well, I always love when people will drop Madison Bumgarner into the conversation that good. He was good, like in the playoffs or something right. So, like his numbers overall, are Overwhelming.
