Thrilled fans with their incredible skills on the court but some behavior was not worth celebrating on august twentieth. Some estimates claimed seventy five percent of all. Nba players drugs. These habits culminated in the death of shooting guard. Terry furlough furlough died in a fatal car accident. In nineteen eighty an autopsy found ballum and cocaine in his blood. Substance abuse also made players vulnerable to all sorts of criminal activity f. b. i. File suggest that during the nineteen eighty one eighty two season at least three new york knicks players were indebted one of the largest drug dealers on the east coast. These debts lead the knicks to participate in point shaving or intentionally missing shots in order to get a particular score this way. Their drug dealer could place a bet on that score and because of the players cooperation he was guaranteed to win. It was the players way of paying him. Back drugs also wreaked havoc on the players. Jalen Green Is a Lock to Go in the Top Four
"We turn our attention to another consensus top five. Pick former or five star prospect. Jalen green he was actually ranked second in the class of two thousand twenty. Twenty two twenty four seven sports. He's a six foot six hundred seventy eight pound nineteen year old guard from california who skipped college to play for the g. league night price of five hundred thousand dollars. He averaged seventeen point. Nine point four point one rebounds and two point eight assists in thirty two minutes per game shop forty six point one percent from field on thirteen point six tips per game. He shot thirty six point. Five percent from three on five point seven tenths per game. He was the team's leading score in best three point shooter. I've seen him as high as third in some drafts. I haven't gone forth behind k. cunningham. Jalen son evan. What more can you tell us well. Yeah he's shot. Fifty five percent from two thirty six point. Thirty six percent from three point range and sixteen games at that g. league ignite level. He does have you know yes. What more can i tell you for. Most people listening there is the allure somewhat of the unknown here. I mean only the diehard diehard nba draft have been keeping consistent tabs on jalen green whereas if he had gone to college he would quite clearly be known commodity. He would most certainly play for bruce. Pearl at auburn. Had onto college. And that would. Certainly things would have gone different. I think for the tigers last season if that had been the case green himself by the way tweeted back in may he tweeted and then subsequently deleted. Because this isn't exactly the greatest endorsement for the daily. He said i know for a fact. If i would have gone to college it would have been a different talk about. Who's going number one. He might well be right. But that's the that's the that's the status of the g. league ignite program at this point and that's to be expected by the way. But hey listen you're not gonna go number one because you didn't go to college but he got paid five hundred thousand dollars and you're going to go second third or fourth and i think that's a trade off the quite clearly jalen is comfortable with

How Do You Measure Accuracy in Speech Recognition?
"Do you mean when you say accuracy when it comes to speech recognition. So that's a really really good question. How do we measure that when we talk about accuracy we're talking about. How many words correct did the system get so. We call this word race so often. It's you know the smaller. The number the more accurate system or we can talk in terms of accuracy. The higher the number the more accurate unperformed system is on what happens is as children get younger. The systems that have been on adult data. They have been modeling language adult behaviors. They work reasonably well for amateur ten-year-old nine ten ten twelve the beginning to sound like little adults now we all know that not all kids are like some kids take a little more development maturing but by the whole when they start getting a little bit older and they start looking adults. The system start form. Well what happens when children younger. What you see is the performance. The accuracy error rates of how many mistakes the system gets starts to die right. There's two different types of areas we talk and when you look at it is simply that the system isn't hearing the difference between a child and adult speech or is it in the language interpreting so sometimes when you talk to a voice assistant how you may be asking for something way out there that the system is no idea. So is able to transcribe what you said but it just can't match what you said to any reasonable response you get account response gone. I can't help you right now. I don't know that answer. Canned responses are quite a thing in speech recognition league. We're all aware of but there's another type of problem that exists is that when people with accents or dialects that are not served by these speech recognition systems. That you're starting to see some acoustically. It actually can't even transcribe that. I'm really see that problem when it comes to kids too. We like to think much more as if you're trying to deal with a system to understand a fifty year old male at a four year old girl you can start to see how different the child's speeches their language behaviors whether you're also trying to do for the pheromone your effectively boiling the ocean. You know it's going to work for some courts better than others and that can be age profiles. It can be in language dialects. And that's where we start to see bias so the system. Not performing for certain demographics as well as it does for others and dash can have very profound effects

Is New Texas Longhorns Coach Chris Beard the Best Hire in 2021?
"It's been a pretty slow week in college basketball. Exactly zero icons have announced their retirement plans. No assistance have been named their schools coach in waiting. But i did talk to texas coach chris beard earlier in the week. So let's talk about that deadline. Let me start by asking you. This most seemed to believe that crispier will in the long term and perhaps in the short term as well but certainly in the long-term proved to be the best hire from two thousand and twenty one. Do you agree with that. I don't know if he'll have not not not explicitly so i think that he's got a really good shot at being very successful. I think his odds are probably the best. But i also think the nature of the job. He's taking the league. he's taking it in even kansas. Gets you know. Dial back here a more than a few notches for a few years. It's still going to be kansas bill. Self has an ideal contract situation going forward so he would not be my pick. He would not be most likely picked to do the best job at this school for the long term. I think he has to objectively be in like the top three of that conversation. Hell he might be your number one. That's part of why you spoke them to begin with but he would not be my pick to be the most successful at the school. Among the hires power conferences in this cycle. Then who would be. Okay i will go with craig smith because i think craig smith has the best chance at both having success and staying at that school. Not that chris. Beard won't like chris beers at texas for the next twenty years and won a national championship. Of course. I could foresee that happening but to me. Correct smith has been really good at south dakota utah state. Now he's going to go to utah. And i think this is a situation. I you know we're all just shooting darts here. But i think that is most likely spot for coach. Have long term success at that

He's a professor of public health in the CNN medical analysts according to the peace And how Leana Wen said. Oh my God implied it would be racist to entertain the lab leak theory. You know, the lab league members called misinformation forever. Suave. He has a fascinating point about that. How the left was so stupid in their rush to call the lab league theory racist. They were so dumb. That they actually Blew up their own identity. Politics argument. Check this out. Let me read the quote from pieces is good. So first. Here's the tweet from Leana, Wen's CNN analyst. She says. He was certain that people will be drawn to the communist party. Because of the communist party's ideology he was a true marxist. But that's not what happened for a number reasons. I don't need to get in here. We'll do it another day and he needed an explanation. Why isn't this happening. So we escaped to the united states where he spreads his former what i call american marxist and he writes extensively and one thing you don't know is that he was the brainchild behind the new left movement. The right so the nineteen sixties students for democratic action. The violence that occurred the attempt to blow up the capitol building and other buildings pentagon. "Has always been top of top of the charts stuff when you were kind of wondering. Washington when we were GONNA see it. Should you trade him and look you know this is this is a great story for G Alito for shooter and for the White Sox and look they are the padres of the American. League, you know the reds have been a little has been a big disappointment relatively speaking to the three teams we we kind of circled as as non. Dodger Non Astro Non Yankee teams, padres, reds, and white sox than the white sox have have just shown flashes of of greatness and they're fun to watch and they're doing what a young team would do. But knowing that you lied is going to be there You know for the foreseeable future. Last night was was just a blast and he he was in, he was in total. Control and you could see it from like a kind of turned on around the third or fourth inning because I. I had seen that he was on amount and he's one of those guys you watch and Kinda. Hung with it for a while. But I I read today he thought after the first inning like I. have some I have some really good stuff tonight and obviously did. I love hearing his voice after the game, the joy that he had Es totally earned what he's been able to do over the last two years going from the starting pitcher with the worst year in baseball to now being one of the dominant starters, the American league and I gotTa tell you Karl that after the last few years when you hear about some of the changes that are done, you know it Dr Line and other places like that. Some of it makes me cringe where you hear about pitchers building up law city and I have questions about whether or not. You know that's feeding some of the injuries you know physiologically some of these pitchers If they can actually handle that there's some hitters who are changing launch angle I don't know if it benefits them and then there are other guys where it absolutely clicks jd Martinez Justin Turner, Lucas G Lido, and you tip your cap to him for making that significant change of shortening his arm path. You know as I said, the top of the show, he throws more like a catcher now than an outfielder it. Dramatically changes spin rate and maybe make completely different pitcher. Me bowers in that category too. There are certain players that benefit from that You're you know I had this conversation and it speaks to some of what we're talking about here with regards to the development of pictures and it goes back to these college programs now and the same things that they have the same tools that they have now at their disposal that five ten fifteen years ago, very few of them had, and now the top programs all have them. So you're. You're taking. You're taking kids Outta, high school, and you're getting into these programs in which you generally wouldn't be exposed to track man and rap Soto Etcetera and pitching tunnels and throwing out of the same tunnel with coaching that you're you're you know in a sense, you're taking a product and you're refining it at a much younger age and you're showing do things and things that you wouldn't have necessarily been exposed to a and I had I agree with you I, I do wonder. That, while we're improving the pitcher and his ability to do things with the baseball we're doing it at an earlier age. They're they're you know it's almost a balancing act between visits going to make you the best pitcher but by doing these things earlier in your career being exposed to these things long term I think it's going to be a major upgrade and improvement we'll be successful but short term just think it would be like if you're a four year old and rather. Than learning on a tricycle, we're kind of exposing you to a two wheeler and by six or five you're writing a two wheel bicycle instead of sort of still being on that price ICAL. I. Think that a lot of that stuff leads to improvement but I do think and I do wonder like you if some of those things have led to injuries along with not having the regular spring training and the fits and starts but I I had thought about exactly your point there. All Right Tonight Mike. Clever returns the mound for the Cleveland Indians which makes so much sense in so many different levels, one and I know internally in the discussions among the Cleveland players they're feeling was you know what we need these guys you know we need clovinger we need Zach police ack in a very competitive American league central were not happy with those guys. There were a few players who were ready to opt out if those guys were left allowed to continue with the team after they broke the health and safety protocol but now that the message has been sent their players on the team or like, okay. Let's get this guy back and Mike cleansers and upgrade, and also the practical reality is Carl is that you know in a Year in which teams are really struggling to assess value in the trademark it and I think that's generally going to depress the trade market by cleven injures out liar because not only would in acquiring team getting for this year but they'd also get him for two, thousand, twenty, one and two, thousand and twenty two. He's going to be thirty years old later this year it makes all. The sense in the world for a team with that much rotation depth to explore all the conversations with teams like the Yankees like the Atlanta braves and this is one last time to put them out on the mound before the trade deadline because of course, that's next Monday and you know teams are GonNa get a look at him as they talk about possible trade combinations. Right. So I think tonight in looking at WHO's on the mound, though the two guys who stand out to are clever and Gospel as far as teams that are going to be calling about pitching and you're GonNa need pitching and you obviously mentioned the Yankees and the braves with all their injuries it Cetera Yeah. You know what? The Indian, the Indian decision making all this and whether police axe non recall has to do with service time, etc the the the the the decision made about an it always comes down to this. You can screw up and depending on the value to the organization They're going to be different rules for different guys. So I am delighted that they sent them down I think the punishment was warranted I'm not I'm not even certain that the that I would bring him back. Excuse me understand to some extent why they're doing that, and if one of the reasons is and we know this, there are many organizations buster. The Patriots come to mind as one You can tell what a player is on the outs regardless of whether he's on the field. You know that he's done he's done with this team I'm not certain. That's the case with Clemenger, but it wouldn't shock me if they've made the decision, it's Kinda like when our threw the ball out of the wall. Kind of new like look he. He's still here but he's gone I don't know if they're they've come to that decision with clever, but it wouldn't surprise me if they've already concluded that and they're going to move him I I just would be shocked by it because we've seen it with other organizations in all of sports..

"The market is gonna look like going forward not sure i would think that if you just took the american league for example whatever reason they're going through one of those years that some teams that really oh or have been playing pool it for a while and are gonna have to redirect their thinking and when you have that kind of noncompetitive situation i feel like that it could possibly put more players into the market i worry a little bit in the national league of the parody and the fact that you know while you don't play to position yourself for a wildcard there are teams that wanna get to the play offs and want to turn the corner by putting that feather in the cap so i would hope that there are more choices at an but that could be relative to what the ask is are or what people's needs are does it change your opinion just mention the american versus the league in the american league you look at the yankees the red sox the astros they seem to be far and away the class of it and if you're another team in the american league i don't know how aggressive at the deadline but in the national league just to this point nobody's really emerged as a as a big time favorite and you mentioned the parody does that change your thinking that that one one player could could possibly elevate you up to two potentially the top of the nationally i'm not sure that i think that first and foremost we gotta get our folks out there and them performing to their max you know we know this season we had last year we know specifically la in arizona there's better ball for them to be playing up the line i'm sure in in that we would just gonna have to stay ahead down i in the division and then every series in the second half really starting with this one before the first offense is going to be a big one for us you certainly can't have enough help in the bullpen and you'd like to add bullpen throughout the years do you feel like this is like if this is the bullpen you have going into the second half i mean i would think you got to feel pretty good about where they're at right now yeah we do take their relatively changeable as to what any you can use them smith's up is familial guy at the end of the game they all can pitch an inning and you know really unhampered by matchups or analytics and then we've got to stricken look forward to the bring it back at some point so i think as constituted whereas experienced in probably performed as well with the exception not having a consistent starter what's excuse me closer is anybody in the league talking to brian saving the as in the giants score start the bay bridge series tonight reports continue to come out that you'd you'd like to add that you need to stand that luxury tax do you need to move more salary to to make a move this way the more you could free up money the better you'd be positioned to spend more at the deadline so bhopal troll it is a goal to stay clear of the luxury tax and if we were able to move money to free up more money to be spent accordingly we'd be prepared to do that it was i i should look this up i don't think i was gonna ask it to but with what's cueto's injury with that anything to do with the ucla well he's gonna walk on on the elbow as you can imagine and fortunately the second opinion from dr andrews they saw the rest and recovery in some therapy there would be worth trying the interesting thing is if this was twenty plus years ago and he was cranky between starts but yet could make you start and be proficient in that start we wouldn't be talking about this unfortunately the pitcher would go until he couldn't go anymore in fact blowout to this point even though he's looked a little bit cranky last two starts i who starts coming back i take there could be light at the end of the tunnel that will hold their breath a little bit yeah the only reason i ask that because gear richards the angel started just had to he's going to get tommy john surgery miss a year and a half and he had that.

"The fan sell the american league in the national league all star rosters around and it's a lot tougher picking team taking roster and the american league than it is the national league what do i mean exactly for example look at the outfield in the american league mike trout mookie betts aaron judge players three old world type players in the national league listen to southfield now these guys having career years they belong in the allstar game i think it's great stories that during the all star game but you look at nick mike jacobs mac camp and try to compete on the mookie betts aaron judge apples and oranges by the way price offer numbers was does the all star game we know why he's dan fans voted main the game is in dc harper was going to find his way into the mix but hopper as far as numbers go not all star this year what is to twelve batting average the biggest stub bill by four and i can't believe the american league put together a pitching staff that did not feature blake style blake styles one of the best pitchers in the year and could first teammate chris archer you know that's just sort of stuff you have to see because look every guy's going to be self serving in china make a case for himself but sometimes there's only so much you can say as an individual yourself to other key may come out and criticize his peers and say you guys need to do a better job and you guys need to watch more baseball i've found it's so refreshing because a lot of the time you have these ballots and voting on reputation and in other instances it's the appeasement process of trying to get a rep from each individual team and because wilson while was going for tampa bay is the starting catcher i'm sure aj hinch when he was putting together a roster say we got tampa bay guy we don't eat play style having a better yet and jose barea promise jose is the only minnesota twin he's having a petty traffic bauer and has been good steles been better these having a better you didn't garrett cole it's close scare cold belongs on the all star team he's having a better year now it will work itself out and blake down will be at the all star game next week but to try and put together a roster and not having their makes absolutely positively no sense now in the national league the biggest snub is going to surprise a lot of folks because many of you probably not been following the milwaukee brewers the brewers have been the feel good story in the national league the brewers right now starting pitcher maybe a team that could find their way to the world series i talked about this last night the national league is wide open as a cat's da l you kind of have a sense for who is going to be there come october the nfl the cubs really good the brewers are very good the braves and affiliate could make a move could be in the equation dodgers teabags who knows but hey zeus how many big hits that guys half for the brewers this year anytime you look anytime you see a brewers highlight big home run law would walk off doing this that's guys should be in the all stuck in alma sucker for that sort of storyline got coming out of nowhere having a big year like that so i hope he ends up winning the final vote and you have a yankee in a red sock in the final vote category would end you benintendi and giancarlo stanton probably going to get most of the votes neither one would be much us i'll tell you a little bit later on when the maestro checks thin but in the meantime we had to montgomery new york steve is up next on a foul up stays jj after i understand that what you do you're you to have to flip flop once in a while i know you don't want to walk on greg jarrett listen five home runs and one hundred and fourteen fast comes out to western twenty five home runs okay fine listen this guy's got nine rb is this memorial day weekend take a look at the internet on how many players he leaves on bass she's a disgrace you.

"Maybe more than that but guaranteed two of them will not be playing in the american league championship series what does that mean it means you know they might have big payrolls and knock every warded so even when you're my point is this even when you're really good even when you have a really good team it's no guarantee that you're going to get foreign enough to make all that money back that you spent by getting the world series or even the american league champion national league championship series to me if you're a final fourteen you've had a very good year and you probably made your money back with the success that you've had if you're less than a final four team there's a chance if you're a high payroll team that you didn't make your money back so playing the odds and not worrying about winning and losing it's easier to be to not compete and not have that heartbreak then to compete hard and risk the chance that you spent a lot of money and still didn't win and there have been examples in baseball and always will be examples in baseball of teams that spend a lot of money and still didn't win the mets don't want to be one of those and no one can argue that that's still a possibility the spend a lot and still lose it's a possibility but you know what if you don't spend a lot well then you can't lose a lot and i think that's the mets philosophy know we all spend too much even if it goes bad we're not out that much that's not great for the fans but it might be good for the organization we'll wrap it up get you set for hockey coming back on the fan pros know a lot about painting it's why they're called pros but they're secrets out and.

"And so i think actually even though the initial legacy of the players league was that the national league returned to power even stronger than before the american association went out of business various soon after the players league folded mid nationally had really sold supremacy over baseball for a time it wasn't that long later about a decade later that the american league was formed and i think what the players league demonstrated is that there was room for a league like the american league there were opera tunities for at least if not long term short term gain for people who might compete with with the nationally of course the federal league about fifteen years after the the american league emerges as a rival league to to the national league so yeah i think the players league certainly was instructive in that in that regard for investors who wanted to make money that you didn't have to use said in in house your illustrating with your your show and so many other different sports you don't have to get into the big league the major league necessarily to to start making money off of the sport i will as we round third base in and head to home in view here not to strain in analogy but why don't maybe you can give us a little bit of your perspective as to the legacy perhaps of this league it's clear right that not only in baseball but sports generally this issue of the player as labor so to speak versus oftentimes different perspectives and motivations of quote unquote management these are issues that are about as modern and current as they were oddly back in the day have things gotten better or worse there any sort of learnings and door things that can be taken from this very interesting chapter in baseball that are either you know that are applicable today or perhaps being ignored as they say people nor history are doomed to repeat it.
