Still ahead on WTO, you would think that we get a better interest rate when we put a bunch of money in a savings account, but you have to really work hard, especially look for the online banks to get the good interest rate bank rates. Here's Kevin Kelly, chairman and CEO of art field on the efficiency of model based systems engineering. Today we use model based systems engineering. Whereas in the past, we used to design things sequentially. We have to do things much faster now. So we do concurrent engineering. Everybody builds their modules, simultaneously. And we have digital models that we input all of that data into to make sure that the systems are going to interoperate with one another, and we can still control those interfaces. So at our field, we invest in our MBS E or model based systems engineering infrastructure. It's part of our ongoing R&D. We train our people. And how to use that. And it is a really enabling function that didn't exist 20 or 30 years ago, but it's absolutely critical now to hasten the pace of development. "From his knee injury in fact, he might miss the first three games. John stash Eller Bloomberg sports, Nathan. All right, John, thank you to 6 37 on Wall Street, time to take a look at stock, some of the names moving in the pre market. If you're still bleary eyed from that early morning U.S. open match, you'll be glad to know Bloomberg radio and TV markets correspondent creek Gupta's bright eyed ready to tell us what's happening under the hood in this little changed market before we get that ECB decision creating. Yeah, lucky for everyone I did not say I have to watch the U.S. open match. I think I missed a big one. We got to keep an eye on GameStop speaking of big things to watch here. It is soaring up about 9% in the pre market. It's coming off a partnership with guests, Nathan, a cryptocurrency exchange FTX. Oh wow. On the same day, by the way, that they did announce their earnings as well. So let's talk about the earnings picture first. The gaming company reporting net sales for the second quarter that did ultimately miss estimates analysts still skeptical, but it was that partnership with FTX, which of course we know has seen quite a bit of success in the crypto space that's really boosting the shares here. Getting a little positive reviews on it from the analyst base saying that while GameStop has a passion shareholder base, FTX could add to it. So that is some good news for GameStop despite the fact that you don't really have a positive catalyst for GameStop when it comes to the earnings front. I should also mention that this is when it comes to the FTX partnership. This is really in the efforts to boost the NFTs. This is something that you're seeing a lot of gaming companies really look to do and this partnership with FTX gives GameStop quite the boost. Well, if AMC entertainment can invest in a gold mine, why not have a crypto partnership with GameStop? What else are you looking at? Well, let's look at American Eagle Outfitters. We know the retail story has continued across the sector target Walmart, Nordstrom even Macy's. While American eagles know exception, they're down about 15% in the pre market war down as much as 16% earlier in the session. They reported results as well. Some of these earnings stories still trickling in as you can tell Nathan, but they're reported results that Citigroup analysts described as quote rough. They also paused their quarterly cash dividend, Nathan, that is probably the worst thing you can do beyond not giving guidance and essentially just pausing that dividend at a time when a lot of companies, especially American Eagle, has actually been using that dividend to attract investors at something that you've seen in the financial space, it's something you've seen, arguably in tech space as well. Arguably even in the oil space to actually boosting their dividend retailers not so much. So not so great news for American Eagle, AE O is your ticket down about 15%. I'm going to end here Nathan with Moderna shares. mRNA is your ticker up 1.7% in the pre market. It was higher about 3% earlier in the session. So some of those gains getting paired, this comes after Deutsche Bank upgraded the stock to a buy from a hold after a solid second quarter earnings beat and welcome late July news of additional fall 2022 orders coming out of the United States. So some good news on the vaccination front. Yeah, the healthcare space certainly doing well in this environment. Thanks for this pretty good as always to have you with us. Bloomberg radio TV markets correspondent. Creedy Gupta, looking ahead to the market open, stocks as a whole. Those meme stocks back big time today, case in point, bad bath and beyond surging 38.7%, AMC entertainment holdings up 14.5% while GameStop up now by ten and a half percent. One O two on Wall Street, time now for the market drivers report with a focus on American depository receipts, and here she is. Abigail too little. Thanks, Charlie, and there's some significant underperformance for most of the ADRs we follow closely starting it with China tech. Even with U.S. yields lower something that typically helps tech stocks makes them look a little bit cheaper, most of these China tech ADRs are down sharply can duo duo, JD.com, Alibaba Baidu all down by about one to 4%. Now, not helping those names at least from a perception standpoint, Japan SoftBank, the holding company, it posted a record $23.4 billion loss on plunging portfolio valuations, but that ADR interestingly enough is down just slightly, turning to Europe, the intact this ADR is down 9% on a disappointing earnings report as vaccine orders led to sales and profit short of analyst estimates and then finally rounding it out, some European tech ADRs are modestly including SAP, Nokia and Ericsson, Charlie. "Break out to that nine hundred all time high next week with those extra catalysts of delivery numbers and the gig berlin plan. I'm curious what you guys thing. Thanks for having me. It always makes me a little concern when viewers sending video questions from their cars when the cars are moving Guy what do you say about tesla or who said alight. And let's hope he was in a tesla self driving car. I think he's on to something. I would look at it and say you know the comments that you made yesterday. Scott wapner the fact that that didn't nail the stock today to the downside is very encouraging. I do think given to set it could test those january highs which if memory serves was nine hundred dollars and forty cents don win. You saved tesla. I'm not even going to try to argue. Around the valuation of tesla are. We will be here all night. This is purely momentum play purely a technical play. it's tran. i think you continue to ride it. If you have a core position which. I'm assuming you do because you've bought into the story you hold that you take a portion of that and you traded around momentum so so tessa falls into high multiple camp and that's part of the problem at least just in terms of the broader market dynamics working against it and and others but but the fact that we're talking about this as a delivery story i think the the deliveries numbers have surprised to the upside over the last couple quarters. If you listened to one of the things he said is they've got the first of all the size of the opportunity is is so extraordinary. It's bigger than expected. And that's good news and bad news. A lot of the drivers for tesla's outside valuation. I think are more related to the technology and the battery and things when really the blocking and tackling here is the market and deliveries and free cash. Which are things that they are producing on but really ultimately have you focus on the valuation art coming up housing alert rates. They're on rise. What it means for your mortgage. We'll break down the details plus the big news at mcdonalds that got all of our mouth-watering mine included back right after this. Welcome back to the special edition of fast money we're tracking shares of amc entertainment and the after hours session. They're up by two percent the company announcing that it is buying back thirty five million dollars worth of debt which will say them about five point. Two million dollars in interest costs annually. This is the most expensive part of their debt. At a fifteen percent interest rate may not seem like a big thing. Adam erin tweeting. The tweeting just moments ago. Progress is made when you take big steps or small steps important thing is that you are moving forward guidance. Maybe little by little. They chip away at some of that outstanding debt. This is i think this is on the margins. Really good news. You said it's saved five and a quarter million. that's great. This is the high end of the interest rate spectrum. Which you mentioned as well this is going to add some fuel to the fire for all the people that will watch your documentary. Which by the way. If i'm not mistaken comes out next week. So i think this is. It's definitely not negative for the stock. Think it's on the margins positive. I do you have a documentary next week. It's not on. Amc that one is still splits just to clarify just in case people are wondering on. We'll have more on that one. The one that premieres next week next week but in the meantime on amc the stock is still climbing the after hours up. Two point four percent at this point tim. I know your views on this thing but but still this good news. yeah. I i think that they're dealing from a position of relative strength to be able to do this and take out high cost debt which was one of the issues. That really looked like this. This was going to cave Before they found retail support and so this is capital restructuring and this is Engineering of the balance sheet. And it's all smart stuff to do and frankly to the extent that a lot of people needed to see a sustainable business model of one side is the revenue and the income statement but part of that is also a function really of just their operating costs and their cost of capital and debt-servicing costs. So you have to be happy about. This hasn't really changed to me The top line outlook but but why not deal from a position of strength when you have it all right. We've got some big news on the housing front talk about mortgage rates. They're back on the rise thirty year fix is now back about three percent. The highest level in nearly three months so we'll rising rate start to wreck the red hot housing market. Let's bring an ivy zalman the sea of zalman and associates and author of. Gimme shelter hard calls and soft skills from a wall street trailblazer which hits bookstores tomorrow. Ivy congratulations on the book. We've certainly been tracking you for a long time in terms of your thoughts on housing specifically you saw some red flags even before mortgage rates ticked above three percents. So what's your assessment of where we are right now. Well we were concerned that the housing market is too hot. And we think that rising rates will definitely dampen demand. It's very disconcerting to think what the housing market would look like if mortgage rates were to rise to rise to as little as four percent a thirty year fixed rate at four percent we think would arrest the market and we would see a significant slowdown. And that's really dude. Melissa the fact that two thirds of mortgage holders the united states have a rate locked in below four percent so rising rates are really going to impact. I think overall and the free money party train might be coming to an end ivy on the high end which is obviously an important part of the house is it will have the same effect to those participants. Actually i think that it's worse for the high end. Frankly because i think as rates rise and more people are disincentivize to move so you know the same status you look at those people that have mortgage rate below three point seven five. It's fifty four percent so think about all those people that were fortunate to lock in below three. They're not going anywhere. The move upmarket will feel it more so and the second home market will also start to slow so we think the high end or move and second time move up and luxury will be more impacted the affordable product. I think that today i'm home. Ownership is still a preferred long-term way to build and i think monthly payments..

There's our dynamic in work and play right there. But what's going on is I think we're seeing a lot of hedge funds that they got it on this this retail trading frenzy and bid these stocks up taking some profits, closing out some positions. You know, it wasn't just game stop that saw This activity this week. It was a lot of these other heavily shorted companies like AMC entertainment and in costs, And so I think what you're seeing is a lot of the hedge funds that piled into the momentum. Trader now are not getting the heck out before they caught holding the bag, But they're closing out other issues to get the money to cover. What they're losing on. These short sells right Yeah, that if that's true, it might not be the same Hedge fund better short that that are now long. Um, A lot of lot of places tend to do one of the other so it it actually could be some sort of no interest hedge fund battle between the shorts and those that make long bets. I was wondering yesterday and I don't know if anybody can know the answer, although mostly what I've heard is, don't worry. But is there a possibility that this is a one of maybe a first set of dominoes? And it's not just going to be. Ah ha! The big guys had to take it in the shorts, no pun intended, but that other things are gonna happen and other things are gonna happen. And eventually, my mutual funds or My 41. K's are suddenly going down precipitously or is this just a one off? This is a separate event, and those things aren't all connected. I think what's actually happening with Gamestop specifically and these stocks that he's kind of nostalgia Reddit stocks is it's definitely interesting and troubling, but it's not necessarily the bubble that's going to end up bursting. But But I think that the underlying mechanics kind of informing this decision making is is where the issue lies. And that's in just kind of this extreme speculation we're seeing across the market. You know, we were way we've seen for months. Stocks hit record highs Even with the economy, you know, in recession, we've seen tech stocks blow past every single possible evaluation metric that would suggest it's time to get out. Without without issue, So, yes, this is just a symptom of kind of the rampant speculation going on in markets right now And if if you listen to, you know a lot of these smart hedge fund managers. A lot of the lot of the kind of industry leaders don't tell you a big problem is the Fed keeping interest rates so low for so long? On kind of making it so there's no comeuppance if you if you continue to pilots who are really crowded trade, it'll just continue rising as long as it's interest rates are low. Maybe I shouldn't ask this. But what's the next game? Stop. What's the next day M c or BlackBerry? If you got one for me? That's a tough one. Well, the way we solid, Gamestop was kind of just like a perfect storm of things, and we had the founder of TUI's. This'd be seen a Brian Cohen made it investment. And then there was a short seller that came out with the report. And then that was just sort of like that got everyone to galvanize and decided they were going to squeeze those shorts out. Way we've seen a couple games stops in the last couple days. Since then, we've seen, you know, AMC Entertainment Tangier outlets. There's all these kind of heavily shorted companies that are that are doing that. But you know what is going to be the next target of the Reddit crowd? It's It's really impossible to know because one of the added Things here is sort of this underlying nihilism that kind of informs what they're doing like they're They're kind of half market disrupters have trolls. So you're getting a situation where there purposely picking like nostalgic stocks. And one better kind of like unpopular and you know, out of style and making those part of their decision. You know, it would be funny toe make a stock of Ah Rick and border video game retailer sore. There's that's not 100% the impotence. I mean, there's a lot of money behind this. It has to be more than just the troll job. But there's definitely sort of this. This weird fascination with kind of unstylish brands, So it's It's blockbuster video is publicly traded. Babe, You're looking at that next. I was just thinking, which would be stupid, right? But I guess you Could do anything you want. In fact, isn't there something self fulfilling about this? It's not what will be its What do you want it to be? If Reddit decided that it was some other as you say, nostalgia company. They could drive that assuming that somebody has shorted it right? Yeah, absolutely. That's the key is the shorts because when that happens, you're squeezing people out of positions, And it's kind of creating this chain reaction of buying that helps push your position even higher. And then all the people that have foam Oh, on your reddit form, Get in and then you know really it Z dangerous, But you know for people that are that get out the right time. It can be essentially very profitable. In that sense. It's it's sort of like gambling. So They're definitely from Reddit Day traders. They're gonna make a killing on this. A lot of them are going to be caught holding the bag, Esso, and like you like you mentioned, you know, this probably isn't the last time we're gonna see this way we could see a crop up crop up sometime soon. In another heavily shorted stock pressure. I like the way you described the nihilism of it and the trolling of it that is what's really driving. This is not uninterested in the company or even the viability, but really just taking it to the man And I wonder. What kind of an investment strategy that is really No, That's that. I'm really glad you brought that up, because that's definitely part of it, too on that's not a that's not a media narrative. They are on reddit, and they're saying in as many words, probably somewhere colorful words. You can't say on the radio. Let's take it to the man, so that's definitely a thing they had actually targeted Melvin Capital, which was the hedge fund that was really short game stop that ended up imploding and needing a bailout. They had targeted that there had been shattered about about squeezing that hedge fund even before this game stops stuff came to the forefront the last couple weeks, So yes, there's definitely sort of this populist uprising. I'd say amongst these people, they you know, the founder of Wall Street best himself. He mans the Wall Street. That's Twitter. Hey, said, maybe occupy Wall Street and the wrong idea. He actually said that on Twitter so clearly, you know, the person that's even running this form has Guess a societal upheaval in the in mind, and they're definitely trying to disrupt..

GameStop mania explained: How the Reddit retail trading crowd ran over Wall Street pros
"This game Stop. It might be a really scary trend. And people might lose a lot of money here, huh? Here's what it is. It's much more complicated in this. But right now, basically what games stop shared the trading on Wall Street and some other stocks to has nothing to do with the companies. It is a war. It's a war between Main Street retail investors against Wall Street fat cat hedge funds and through things like Read it. Now enough, retail investors have been able to gather together and create a force that they could put the screws to these hedge funds, which have been shorting stocks. And make the fat cats pay. That's really what it's about These red it, folks. It had a bit more complicated Start which I won't but what it is right now. And a O. C by the way, and Elizabeth Warren are now backing them, along with the long bus, which is just makes my mind go nuts. They're basically saying, you fat cat Hedge funds on Wall Street have made so much money with your back room meetings where you're gonna short cos I won't explain how that all works. But basically you're betting on companies to fail so that you could make money. We're going to get together and we're gonna buy, buy buy, And as the share price goes up, you lose. Potentially billions of dollars. Huh? Huh? Huh? But he's not. I mean, not shorting but didn't like Romney do something like that, where him and his company would take over companies and they would borrow or spend off of their credit and then bankrupt the company, the company I don't know if Romney did it, but certainly that has been in the past What these hedge funds have done, and this is perfectly legal. They take a short position they without explaining how you're short a stock. They're basically betting that a company is not going to go well do well and that a stock price world will fall. But Elon Musk has been doing battle with the short sellers on Tesla for years, and by the way, they have lost their shirts. Yeah, He's the test list. Stocks insane, and he's been taunting them all the way up. And so now these these, it's like one of our anchors described it as occupy Wall Street. Not with money. Well, that's interesting. But Jane, don't the people that bought you know all the people on Reddit and all the you know the day traders. They don't have a ton of money. Maybe they have, like, you know, 10 $15,000 in the market, whatever. And they bought a lot of you know these stocks that are being shorted like Gamestop Gamestop today, don't they have A real You know, horrible chance of losing money because that stock is gonna go down. Yes. So look, Um, but that's all of them. It's free market. You have smart people who are getting in and out of her mouth. Paula, Half a Tia, who wants to run for governor of California was one of these who jumped in and said, Yeah, he's a Silicon Valley guy was part of the Gavin news on buying. I'm buying Well, then he comes on our air today and says, You have already got rid of my position. So he made a killing. But this, you know somebody who's maybe not sophisticated and that's all right. You know, It's your right. If you want to go out and lose your money you're now you bought it at you know, 3 50 or whatever, By the way, game stop is now after hours down 2 to 92. So it's given starting to the sell off is beginning whether you know people buy on the dips. Tomorrow it goes back up. We don't know. Same with AMC Entertainment, the theater industry Here's a funny thing, Tim. These people are trying to stick it to the man by by making these guys who are short squeezing them so that they lose so much money. They gotta cover their shorts. They gotta buy stock. All this craziness driving the stock price higher. Who's really benefiting from this? The man's man be really, really rich people who say they're not short of this doctor. Here's a perfect example. Tootsie Roll. Role has become one of these Reddit chat room. Disney losing money due to COVID-19
"Time now to talk business joining me the financial analyst. Louise Koo for good to have you here on a Friday. Louise. Tell us about the. The issues that Disney is now facing in terms of its filming schedule. So in America can number of cases of coronavirus is gonNA have four million. It still increasing big. America's not really controlling the pandemic, and there are now some concerns about the economy bounced back as well. Thirty million Americans are claiming unemployment support data and yesterday in the weekly jobless figures. We had a rise again so there there are some serious concerns about the sort of economic recovery. The economic bounced back in the states and Disney really illustrates some of those problems for that specific industry, so they're saying Moulin which is the remake of the original animated film is now being spooned, and in fact no new date for its release has been set. An Hollywood is a big industry for America dominates the world. A whole load of other studios unsurprisingly are delaying films. They're having problems making films. I mean that's a massive massive problem. And Disney's not alone of just. So and the costs of this are massive to an industry that dominates the world, so it's yet more evidence that don't be complacent on the economic bounceback, indeed I mean if if you walk around London you see signs of movies that were supposed to be released in April and there's a sort of a cool irony to the fact that the pause button was effectively port on the hall of the Cinema Industry, and what is Disney doing in any way to try to mitigate against all this, or is he able to do anything? It's losing a whole load of money actually saw history as a whole load of other companies, so it's the usual thing. It's cost cutting. It's. Getting a hold of banks to lend it more money. That's another big issue with the the crisis. It's cutting its marketing. Spend its advertising spent.
