"Tell Ya. If you're doing good or not serious are acting teacher would drive me nuts. He was he was. You'd get up you'd memorize scene and you get up on stage to get one line out and he'd stop you all right now. I want some business do some Jesus let me just go through the seen once and business switching moody. What is your intent here so but I met another guy who had a good sense human. We started joking around and we saw an ad in the trade paper. The trades in Newark off Broadway show is in development backstage. Yeah the casting. Please do not come in person. Do not send pictures. Do Not Phone. Why did they? Why are they letting what he's supposed to do? Yeah there was a had. We're doing a show. Comedy Anders wanted so we went in it was on forty Fifth Street Rehearsal Hall no longer there and the guy said The material we said No. He said we'll come back with a sketch so every week. We'd write a sketch and come back and they never put on the show but finally we had so many sketches. The Guy said let's put on a show with just you guys so we did a show. Who was the other guy and his name was Vicky Greco still the game. I know I don't think so. I I don't he. He's in New Jersey or New York and but very funny man and he made me laugh and they said he was like ned sparks. I remember that a guy with a cigar sour face and made me laugh and eventually we got an agent and we just developed from there. We've got to do the show. The show they never did it. We did our own show. Yeah and then. We started working the coffee houses in the village gathers the big thing. Yeah we'd get up and do we just do sketches. Which is I guess. It was unusual. We never talk to the audience so the bottom line and the what else was down the village the village gate or anything. The village gate. We played a gaslight play. Yeah yeah who is around the scene? So we'll talk. Bob Dylan was working there. Peter Paul and Mary you saw them know who did a lot of folk singers and not many comedians was woody Allen Wad Ryan think yeah he was but I think we're a little after him. Yeah so is this like sixty nine or Tho- no no earlier than that. It was the early wait middle sixties. So must pretty crazy. It was great. It was just a great time. We played in a little club called the cafe. Chino Which I thought it was named after Cappuccino or something in the guy's name was Gioaccino and every week he do an original little one act play. Now it's a restaurant you go in. It's a little tiny place but we did. A one act plays where we do our sketches and got a response. Oh great you know we. We had very kind of offbeat stuff new new stuff. You remember any of it. Oh yeah I'm still pulling some of it out in and doing replacer really the the little well we had one. That's easy to describe. I would come out and say to the audience. I just say I put my wristwatch on my ankle and wait to have someone come by and get them to ask me what time it is so a pull up my pant leg and say Oh look. It's four thirty and here comes a guy now and the guy came by his waiting for a bus. I'd say Gee it's a nice time a day. It's getting dark. Yeah Yeah I said. I'm waiting for this bus. Is it late Yeah I don't know what time the bus most of them supposed to be here at five funds it look. Do you have any idea what time it is now? And he pulled up his pant leg and his wife it's four fifteen and that was the blackout and we did some stuff in clubs. I remember one club. Honor we audition. And afterwards he said to our manager obscure humor doing obscure also. At the time there were the popular was after. Martin. Lewis So there are a lot of where. The Guy played a trumpet. Then the other guy did the comment. Hey hold on right doing it. So you've got a wacky guy and I think one of our problems was Neither one of us was the wacky. They're just little sketches right right. Yeah it wasn't a team dynamic vignette in one sketch I'd be the dumb guy in the sketch and then So it was hard to sell that act as a act was and we would we would go into a club and bomb and go to the next club and just be great. We went into the whole hungry. I in San Francisco really toured with this. Yeah Okay and at the time. They're only about six. Comedy Clubs was the hungry. I in San Francisco. The Gate of Horn in Chicago places are GONNA the bitter end in New York which is still there kinda five or six others and we'd make that that tour and the two did what year you had. What yet like about an hour away. Yeah and is tall. We we'd open for some acts of the times we acted open for US high. And you you don't remember who was around your any of those opening actor. Miriam Makeba does end. Yeah yeah sure. But she's very pretty kind of African. Yes she's a folksinger right. Yeah Passed Away. Yeah and one day. This is not a sensor show is I just WanNa know we were in Washington. Dc and a club. We were rehearsing a very ambitious club. Re opened one night. Yeah and the next day. We're in the club going coming up new material and a guy came in and who's watching us. He kept watching us. He said Love your show last night I said Oh yeah it was pretty funny. He said I love that. Miriam Makeba I said. Oh yeah she was good. I'd really like to fuck. Oh yeah what? She was very good. I mean we thought he was there to watch so anyway. Like you were gonNA say like okay. Let me go get her. We'll put in a word for you but we'd go in a club with the smothers brothers had played in and I'd seen their act and they were so good with music and all we did is the sketches but people still will come up to me and remember. We had a sketch where to mathematicians were. Were having coffee and talking about Brunelli Sterry of of Phys talking about big The big convention of mathematician and the last year it was wonderful can because Professor so requested once twice three times lady that was on but then it turns out. We're time to pay check. Let's split the check. Yeah and it was twenty four fifty and we couldn't figure out what twenty four so we we left to tip will leave ten percent and we walked out and the waitress comes out just professors. Oh dear they left me a one hundred dollars. He had guy and I'd forgotten that but some someone reminded me of it. And you'll we. I'm still part of a sketch troupe. My wife and I run it. We do what we just did a show last night at the second city theater in Hollywood and about once a month we we have a goop about forty people at any one time. There's fifteen twenty and we do an evening of sketches and every once in a while someone reminds you know I saw you in the village. Remember that thing you do about the Mo- mathematicians real. I don't remember then I think about it and then I'd rewrite and we'll do it and they go over very well. We did one last night that I pulled out of the thing. It's a ship. You know one of those ships where they're all rowing heaving whipping them. Yes a swathe ship shit and the guy who he so we say where. It's time to mutiny. Are you ready are you? If we were GONNA take over the ship so we grab the slave driver time up and we'll get back to the course and everyone's out of folks he. Oh no you've gotta pull together. Land is one mile nor by size. We need someone to lead us. I cannot do it. Who can and someone's let's set him to it. The Guy who was whipping let him free and he starts whipping off free with free. But it's a good audience a strong case sure and this was something that was wrong Greco. Actually it was something I did in Next Group. I went to second city in Chicago. You tour we started me your word for years and it's tough when you're working with one guy now you work alone. Yeah so when you go off the stage if you bombed you you probably sell them but if you do you probably hopefully say was. The audience are screwed. You have friends if it's a two man team you kinda think the other guys screwed up so it gets tense. You need more people to blame. Yeah so we actually we. We broke up. I wrote all the material there you go. I wrote all the material we never wrote it down and we did it but He was on heavy. You had a wife and kids and had a lot of responsible. We broke up. I got hired to go to second city. It's a long story I we we went in. I win an audition with Robert Klein when now how big was second city. Then it wasn't as big as it is. Today it had opened on Broadway. It got a big acclaim Ellen. Arken Barbara Harris Severn Darden was Ed Asner. Involved had that was before that Shelley Berman data as Moore's calls the compass players okay. I did not know them. But in the early sixties they came to Broadway with a review with the review. The smartest stuff yet ever saw it. Oh my God how? Arguing was in L. and Argon Barbara Harris. Smart The all had beards and they were talking about But it was all comedy all comedy because Alan Arkin is hilarious. And so eventually they were casting in one year the I teamed up with another guy and another guy to try to get the old act on. It just wasn't working the same bits. Yeah and they was your moments where you're like. I Miss Greco my guide. Yeah yeah no one else was is funny because you kind of build the grew a work line so I got. I went down to audition for for second. They'd seen us when we'd been in Chicago. Yeah so they went. I said I told my agent stuff. It's very bright. It's talked about Kirk Garden. Excuse me so I went down. Luckily I just hit a vein there when I got up to get to of his up we improvise and they offered me a job and of course well. I'm not sure I don't know I'm doing something else so they. They gave me a week to think about it. And I went begrudgingly and had the greatest time of my life. I went for six months and they extended me for another six months with Robert Klein. This was the The crew Bob Klein. Yeah of David Steinberg. Wow from Anna. Yeah who still? He does be he he. He's the director and Bob Klein. Still doing comedy. You talked to Rob Weinstein. Not as much as I liked he lives in New York. I'm very big fan of him. who else was in that crew. Knowing you would know of Sandra Karen who's living in England. Judy Grow Bart Wonderful. She was like Elaine may very goofy funny and she married a guy named Bob Dishes of second city. Then I went back to New York. Where was that now where we as okay so client had not done stand up? You know influence in the dressing room. He would do these funny bits. He knows do it get to be Christmas and he leaned up against the wall. What is Christmas to me? I got no mother. I got no father dean. Yeah and he'd make me laughing and and every night coming in Bob Christmas are looking forward to Christmas. Yeah Christmas what is knowing who you expand it so one day I said Bob he was Bob. Yeah He. I guess it was another Bob Klein so he had to change the eventually Robert and he told a very funny story. He was an actor. Struggling actors story got a call. Bob You've got to come in. I've been looking for where are you? Where have you been so he said? Oh okay so. We went to the ages of she looks. Oh No I meant Bob Clark. Other other And I would say Bob. You must do this on stage because I couldn't do stand up. I'm very easy in sketch awkward. Instead is you gotta do stand up. He says I try to so about a year later I went back and he was in play called the apple tree and I went out with him to the stage Deli. Yeah and I said Bob..

"Yeah, we're not gonna make any bones about it. We got lots to get through fan at his little bonus edition leading up to you see basketball against Houston in the battle for first place in the conference. But I'll tell you something so much to get to covering all sports all anything, and we're gonna we're gonna start. I think in an area that we should call this segment. It's always something as we welcome in our first guest. That's right. The president and general manager of FC Cincinnati. And I think what officer as well extraordinaire, one Mr. Jeff burning Jeff how we doing on this Sunday afternoon. Guys. Thanks for having me on. Appreciate it. Glad to have you. And let's talk first and foremost about tomorrow night, seven o'clock in grand ballroom at music hall. It is the jersey reveal the new kits using the proper terminology there. Jeff, you're great. So tell me about that one. When I first saw that it was going to be at musical in the grand ballroom. I was kind of like us a call real. How'd you get that? How did you decide on using that venue? And I know it's ten bucks. All the money's go to the FC Cincinnati foundation. Great. 'cause obviously how did you wind up having the reveal at us a call? I promise you we planned it before all the noise. The question came up. But we wanted a place where you know, we could get maybe eight hundred to a thousand of our supporters and. Obviously close to the stadium would be ideal. And it just it seemed like the perfect spot. Let me ask you, Jeff and take you back a few years if somebody said in early February of twenty nine thousand nine hundred you would be gearing up less than thirty days from trampling out the Seattle to open a season in the in the Major League Soccer. Would you have really a couple years three or four years ago? I know you had this vision. But honestly, this quick would you have ever envisioned this to occur? Honestly, it was the plan. We I was very confident. I what I what I conceive the plan while sitting around my kitchen table in two thousand fourteen I really thought that the city was ready for something. New backer had really grown dramatically particularly between two thousand four and two thousand fourteen and our country. Cincinnati the record number of kids playing soccer we compete from a number standpoint from a rating standpoint with market for Kansas City and St Louis. It just seemed like it was the perfect time to to launch this. And, you know, Orlando get it in five years, and I truly thought if Orlando can do it in five Cincinnati more historic traditional sports major league sports market. We can do it in four. Well, you bring up a great point there that it's something that we were ready for from youth standpoint. And and building up through but again from your political background in town. You know that the wheels around here can sometimes move at a little different pace versus other larger cities at what have you done had a moment just to sit back and even kind of go, I know, I wrote this out on my kitchen table, and I know I did this. But to Tom's point you haven't just sat back at some point gun. Wow. Holy. You know, here we are in. This is just you've been that confident in it all along I have I I will tell you. It's it's been through a lot of hard work and commitment from Carl Lindner owners to back the plan and to be aggressive weren't ambitious club. I will say a through a lot of the hard work. We've had a number of challenges and from times those challenges take the joy out of what we've actually accomplished I always knowledge that. But at the end of the day, we're trying to build a legacy that's bigger than ourselves. And we think this people will look back and think that this has been a great opportunity to promote Cincinnati on a global scale, the global sport of soccer. Well, and I would tell you too. I mean, whatever joy gets taken out will be completely replenished at the kit reveal tomorrow, and every time you see the Bailey get fired up and the people start streaming into the stadium now and in the future. But we we spoke to Paul Dougherty about this gosh a couple of months ago, and then he ended up writing about it a maybe a few weeks ago. Do you guys as an organization? Do you feel like what you have done in the period of time within which you've done it has kind of goose the other pro sports teams Aaron town to start making a little bit more noise in their off seasons. I don't know. I mean, I'm a was blessed by nearly twenty years at the bag. Copy holder. I've had season tickets with the reds symphony stadium open. I grew up on the big red machine. I want to win the World Series every year. I want the Bengals to win the Super Bowl. I'm a Homer FC Cincinnati is about love of our city and. Wanting to bring championship championship mentality and result store city. But I want those other teams too great. And so I'm excited about the ramp. I'm excited about the moves and about opening day. And I think it's awesome. I think that you know, it's a credit to the owners that that are making moves, and and it's great for our city jeopardy. President general manager of FC Cincinnati is our guest here on the weekend bonus edition of the reality. Check with gambling Finn. And Jeff you mentioned almost twenty years you spent with the Bengals and obviously part of that twenty years was around with the county of Hamilton and the Paul Brown stadium. The construction of that how much from that experience for you. Now moving forward with your new facility, how much do you think? Ultimately in the end because you've still got a lot of hurdles as you looted to earlier to climb. How much did that experience? And we'll that experience help you with everything every obstacle perhaps it could get in. The way between now and when it's actually finished. I think it's helpful were some of all of our experiences in life. And I've been blessed to have some terrific experiences. You've learned through the good, and you hopefully, you learn through the bad, and I certainly. Have had an opportunity to see where things have gone right and at times where they've gone long, and we took an approach that we're going to privately fund our stadium. We know that the community invested heavily in the stadiums. At the riverfront community of invested heavily on the Barton, all the parking on the riverfront is funded. And and so we acknowledge we're going to build our own stadium. Having been on Cincinnati city council. I know that it all the time to the city invest in infrastructure and land to help make these projects happen. And so we thought it was appropriate. To have the city support in that manner while we funded our stadium ourselves the county has invested in garages. Elsewhere and for for them to make that contribution to this project. Ultimately, the the probably makes it pay for it. Through parking revenues and really growing part of our downtown core. But at the end of the day, you know, navigated through it. We're obviously trying to get those commitments that have been made over the finish line. I will say at times easier to get a publicly funded stadium than there have a privately funded stadium where some of the hurdles that are being presented. But at the end of the day, we're confident we're going to get this done and going to be a great thing for the community. And we're very proud that we're paying for a stadium. Ourselves. Final question. We've got about thirty seconds tomorrow night, seven o'clock grand ballroom music. Call the jersey reveal I know uniforms in any sport today are critical especially to the fan base will the FC Cincinnati fans love the new uniforms. I think so it's obviously Kim assistant with our colors of blue and orange it. They're dynamic design. We produced I wanna make this point we produce the uniforms with Adidas and Major League Soccer in the shortest time. Period. That New Jersey's have ever been presented. You know, we had a pretty short window and we're excited to present it tomorrow night. Jeff, we appreciate thanks for taking some time in the best of luck tomorrow night as you get geared up on others a game up in preseason game up in India on Tuesday in March two it starts on the road for real and on Saint Patrick's Day. Around you. Thanks for your time. I appreciate president GM of FC Cincinnati. And now, I got a buddy of mine who's totally into this. And he says the blues a little different. So he's already you can see a preview ten bucks tomorrow night and all benefits, the FC Cincinnati foundation grand ballroom. Ironically, us a call, and he just got to wonder how much contact is going to be happening between the relative staffs of the two putting together during the day seven o'clock tomorrow night. A big event for a great cause. And again the excitement is palpable handy. Big event going on this afternoon in one of those people participating besides you former reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo, and he'll check in his band's playing in Fairfield this afternoon. We'll tell you what that is all about. And also ask him maybe a question about the reds this year, and some of the changes in a couple of pitching all that is right ahead. It's the weekend bonus edition the reality. Check with gambling Finn right here on News Radio seven hundred wwl w..
