"References that this one. I loved it. I liked it. Let us get back to back to it. Not amber. You are celebrity girl. You are a big name. And we know that sometimes friends can get a little obsessive. Let me have a celebrity friend. Have you ever had a single black female moment in your life? Truth. To top. I've never had a single black female moment in my life, but I have had where I do feel like people were trying to get close to me because they kind of wanted what I have but not in a trying to take my life type of situation. You got it. Got it. Okay, okay, now you've always asked people to not call you your glee, character name. All right. But since then, you know, going and put some respect on your name. How would I put some respect on your name? They sent stuff that when you got the elevator and you're like, oh yeah, and my name is Simone. It's that. I watch it. She's been talking about it all morning. We've been talking about it almost empty because we were killing her husband. You ever Riley? Come on. No, you know, I just honestly just wanted people to address me by my name like when they see me. It's like a regular human being like, I understand people are gonna be excited sometimes and people were so touched by seeing Mercedes Jones. She was like one of the first plus size black, you know, chocolate characters that was on television every single week. So, you know, that character holds a special place in my heart, but I always, you know, people are like, oh, no that Mercedes. I'm like, hi, my name's amber. Like, you know what I'm saying? Exactly. So you sell me like if you want to have a conversation with me and get to know me get to know me. Wow. I'm totally right there right there. I take the compliment, but at the same time, no, I'm really windy. Got it. Now look, absolutely. If Dale and I were friends, honey, I would steal her life in two seconds. It would be single black female part two. Okay? Anything to get to Oprah. I would wear the nails wings. I'm being fresh up front. If you could. I would be dealt with all day. If you could still any celebrities life. Whose life would you steal? Oh. Beyoncé. Right there, right there. Okay, who wouldn't? What a busy fiance. I would want to be Kelly Rowland because you get to live the Beyoncé life, but not have the Beyoncé pressure. Then I'd be Michelle Williams. And let's go on tour y'all. Amber Riley, we love you. We love you. Love this movie and we are so excited for everybody to check out single black female and air Saturday night on lifetime amber and you look great. Hi, thank you so much for having me. Amazing. We love you up next. Julie Tim. Julie Chen drops a secret about how to win big.

"Up. We're going single black female with amber Riley. How she turned to the dark side. She is joining us live. Yeah. We're still on for drinks for me to pick your brain, right? Simone, I am so sorry. I double booked rain check. Yeah, yeah, okay. Thank you. Going out with BB I soon. No, Eric, actually. I know. Work relationship. Are you sure you're ready for that? By the way, I would have stabbed her ass too, honey. And Riley's here from single black feet. Hello, hello hello. Hi. Wow. You are giving me everything in this movie. How did you tap into that dark side because I know girl you don't have it? Well, she got it in this one. I feel like we all have that dark side. I feel like, you know, we go through our lives and we kind of try to make sure that we are being presentable, but in this movie, I just kind of got to let loose. Wow. Let it all hang out. And you let it all hang out. I mean, you killed it. I was so impressed. So how do you think this really different from single white female? 'cause I love that one, too. You know, there's some there's some cultural references. And I do. I love single white female. That is a Coke Coke classing for sure. But I feel like there's some cultural references in this film that we're gonna get that are really funny. I feel like the writers kind of inserted some sexiness, but also some comedy in it a little bit. It's very suspenseful. Everybody's looking for the stiletto to see if it's a little thing happened. But there's some better stuff in this particular film. A couple of. Michelle Obama.

"By having that attitude. Give a hand. That attitude. But it's not look, it's not about that attitude, honey. No. It's about residuals. Okay. It's about residual. Oh, you could call me what Susan. I'm still getting rid of all this. We did. I mean, here's the thing amber grace, our screens as Mercedes from 2009 to 2015, you should be flattered that fans love you so much and they go, oh my God, I love you as Mercedes. We understand that you have since come out with your own, you know, self titled EP and I think there was a way to do it. And so many fans on Twitter and social media were saying there is the way she went about saying it was before. The word reduce. The way she said it. It was offensive to the fans, saying that, you know, it reduces her, you know, she feels reduced when you just call her that if she what she should have done, see how much fresh she's getting now? She came out with an EP a couple months ago. What should have done is put the video on this little statement, you know, she should have come up with a song that said like, I am mother Mercedes. I'm Riley. Like she could have come out with a song about who she really is. Her voice is beautiful, but now we're gonna reduce her to this tweet. So many people who have never even heard of her are gonna reduce her to this tweet just because of how she poorly said what she said and she's an amazing actress. She's an amazing singer. Francesca? If you came in here tomorrow and said, I want you to call me friend, and that's the name I'm going by. I'm going to call you friend. I don't respect for you, and that's what you want to be called. I don't care why. I don't care what happened, but I'm going to respect you and call you Fred. If amber Riley wants me to call her what in the world and not this, I will do the same thing too. I walk around and with people say to me, oh my God, you're the guy from bravo, the lady sitter. And I'm like, yeah, yeah, for sure, but I also do this other show on E as well. I think a lot of times we are proud of things and we want people to acknowledge those things. And when they don't, you feel pigeonholed. Like I could only imagine how it must feel for someone to be like, oh my God, you're the guy from in sync. And in fact, hadn't been around for a long time. Joey Fatone has done much more so has lands bass. There's a pride in that, but I'm more than that. Actually, more than he bothers you if you are truly insecure inside. But is it okay for it to bother you? Yes. Because she feels the way she feels. You can feel however you want to feel is it productive? Is the probably the more important question? Is it productive to feel so offended? Like, what is she getting out of it? Hey, apparently a new name. We'll call.

"Don't miss it. Margaret have a good day. We love you. Thanks Morgan. Thank you so much. Have a good one. Coming up, Hillary dove gets real about the struggle to find love. Plus how she got Kim Cattrall to join how I met your father, our new interview is next. Morgan is sweet. Y'all amber Riley is pissed off and she wants you to know it, okay? She is demanding that people stop calling her Mercedes, the character she played on glee. Amber tweeted, put some respect on my name. No shade to the show or the character that gave me my career, but please stop this ish. She added, I've done too much in my career to be reduced to one row. Lynette, would you be upset about this? Lynette? Susan. Susan. Susan. Susan, but okay. It's literally not. 'cause you call me any character from the show. You call me Gabby. Call me. Breathe. Call me anything. No, I played two really, I get called Lois and Susan more than I get called my own name. And all it does is make me feel grateful that I've offered that much entertainment to people, but they can't separate the two. The funniest thing is Susan is really known for being a horrible cook. And I actually went to the court on blue. I'm a very good cook. And sometimes I do cooking videos on YouTube and I one shop and like I'm real shocked. And people will write me all the time like, I didn't think you could talk. You broke? Susan cooks? No, Susan doesn't cook. Terry cokes. It's okay. You call me whatever you want. Do you feel disrespected though? Do you feel offended by that? No, I'm really opposite. I feel flattered. I feel like I've come into your home for decades as a character, and you feel like you're a part of my family. And that that's lovely. And that ladies and gentlemen is how you gain respect and longevity in this industry..

"It's intense it is not just the actual dancing itself. It's just it's the mental emotional strain that it puts because it's you know at least in your position learning something new and different of the unknown app. You know there's so many different variables then of course as a pro. You know you feel the full weight of the responsibility of like It's up to me to make sure that we're ready And so there's all that you're there as well so it's physically exhausting. But i would say way more mentally and emotionally at which is why. It's so important to sort of like yeah. No learns Process so but congratulations by the way chan. Thank you could only that forever now. If you'd like coach yeah listen. It's for i just saw donny. Osmond um in vegas before has shows opening up soon and He busted out his whole bear ball trophy. I didn't allow things might not have had a long career. That was the single most difficult thing i had ever done. My life and that trophy is my prized possession. And i want everybody to know about them right donny. let's go. You know what. I believe that because that it truly i look at it almost everyday. I thought i'm like how i can't pack. It can't bring it with me. And i'm like jason. We sent me a picture my near bald. I'm down. i'm like i did that. Like it was remind me. Yeah and also how many miracles again is it. Like six or something six. Yes jeff nadi. That is almost a almost eight eight. Well i can't seconds what it was. I came second with With sean johnson. Yes and that was like i felt like that was that was like a little season for me as far as sliding in general as a as a human being but we came second and we you know we did the whole season and then i went back to back with Kelly pickler Amber riley and then the following season right. After that i came second with amy purdy was apparently and so yeah that was a four seasons in a row. Were pretty like second. I i stuck in it was It was pretty amazing as core. Wow yeah that's that's incredible. Actually i was like how do you jump from Almost eight but that makes sense. I've actually become pretty good friends. Shawn johnson from being a national and amy because she came on my podcast and we dislike bonded over that we did a live. Gather there's such people. But yeah it is i di- osmond. He was on my i I went to. I've always been obsessed with musicals. Like i grew up. My mom was a singer and dancer. She taught me dance. And then i grew up loving musicals being musicals and i saw joseph and amazing technicolor. Dreamcoat and i was like. I don't know eight years old and i still have the mug from it prized possessions. It's funny a picture pop up. Somehow i don't know why. But like it was a donnie in in that and useful shortlisting after long hair as ing legends. Legend brother legend. We is is haley dancing in your show because i saw her transform crazy vegas outfits issue dancing that yes yes she's gonna be dancing with me in the show and rehearsing together and she's You know it's funny because she hasn't danced like a a ton the past couple of years and we were together. And i literally just like stop was like hey. I've i forgot how unbelievable you are like. You are extraordinary. She has the most incredible facility. Her her like legs the her foot. I remember that i was like i. Like really fell in love with her arch of her foot and her leg do that. That's yeah amazing. But just just beautiful and the way she moves and then actually dancing with the wave feels and and so i. I'm not only excited to share this experience. But i'm really excited to have people see her dance at at such a high level. We're gonna be going shows intense and So i'm i'm excited. And she looks incredible and discussing that. You saw On melrose you don't you don't like on on melrose. There's a store and i walk out. I was like these. Costs are a -rageous ridiculous in the most amazing way and this guy who does jaylo stuff katy perry gaga job. It's like work like thirty thousand dollars. Something insane and he was a fan. He said he's okay. I'll just do want something. Let me know. And it's like we're gonna figure it out we're going to work the show somehow because so vegas and figured out figured out yet i can only imagine your vegas show is like what i what i think of is like a moulin rouge style in your face very vegas like the costumes. Just next level. I feel like because what is what is the title of the show limitless. No limit no limit no limit. Yeah i that's such a you thing to do. And i'm like wait. How are you doing it for from september. Twenty second to november twenty first Is is right now and possible for extensions and stuck with up. But that's that's booked right. Now that's incredible. And i need to go back to haley. I because i really like when you guys danced on the last season dancing with the stars i was like okay to humans cannot move this way like. That's what are the chances that there's two people in the world that move like this and they're together and they get to dance. Together i went home and stocked the shit out of all of her videos of her dancing and i wanted to study every single move and things she did because i was like that would be my dream like human to dance like is haley. She is just like there is no everything she was doing. Macau not even wobble like she's just all it and smooth everything she does and she's obviously stunning and i just. I stopped her. That can be my confession. I just throw friday. I have to started like We we actually met. We actually met on for Dancing and i guess was on stage. It was a dancer was like. I got out there. No it wasn't part of the dance. It was reducing rumba. It was that's love for and it's on video so a fan. God is so we actually have our is onstage announcing edgy durins ethnic is a thin yeah a thinking and we actually recreated the and and Like a couple of months ago and stuff so yeah. It was cool. How long now. I know what i'm doing later stocking that video. I'll probably like in the mirror. Trying to dance. I get like guessing myself like so. Gosh that's amazing. I love that you guys have that moment. Look back on that. You recreate that. I didn't think i was gonna like that. Style of dancing ended up loving. Yeah is it happens. A lot sooner is also on the show. There's things that like you think. Oh man this like this is gonna be really difficult for this person to learn and then we do it and then actually it's great you know and you say oh this this one's gonna easy go in for w really hard and you're like she had this all backwards. I thought i thought i was going to be like so good at the pasadena play and not like my worst worst dance adler i but i also remember. Part of the reason of the was difficult for that. One was big your costume your hair your that way like. I'm really a detriment. As far as you like it was just hard to maneuver. And that's also what happens too is what people don't realize you on When watching is rehearsing rehearsing in the studio. You don't rehearse in these costumes you don't really have. You don't have time. we like the day of. You're doing a full run through in costume. Just a few hours before the foreman. So there's not a lot of time to fix.

"With kids and you've got a chance riley we'll see you again. Yes thank you and that is why we talk things mental health as much as we can on this podcast. See you never know what people are going through like. I knew that amber within the past few years have become very open about anxiety and depression for her really going into detail of what at rock bottom looked like for her and then i appreciate how she was honest enough to still say she still grieving the loss of two people close to her and that she even says she lost four more. We gotta be real. We gotta be honest about where we are and how we're handling grief and as long as we're getting through we gotta get through the grief though we gotta get through it. You never stop missing person at miss. Moffat i miss my grandmother. So it's kind of like okay now. I get to live. Because i did get to live during that time. I didn't i kinda. That's a look back and go through those experiences at twenty eight but while it was happening it was just it. It felt like that it felt like eight years. Felt like that one snap It didn't even feel that mall but when the wave is going good in it so much success erect carpet. Listen it's like every single episode well duh was like a long standing concert in and they probably weren't grueling. Because you love to sing you love to warm. Now you were when you are twenty years old you booked glee. What was your young adult experience. Like growing up in hollywood. It was interesting. Because it's not like i was just on a small team. Show a small baby show as it is not like i was on a small team. Like arles on a huge nominal. Like it was only be this phenomenal. No it was an anomaly. It was just like there was nothing like it really. That was on television. And honestly i honestly think that it was the magic of cast in having such writers everybody was cast so perfectly for that show in just worked in. It was a story that had never has really been told on. Tv weekly in it appealed to audience after like that really wasn't spoken to yes Like outkast you know the the the ones that so that they weren't being saying the ones that weren't cool and it was always so dope to me to be able to represent that In understood a lot more. When i got older but in the thick of a in the middle of it it was hard it was hard. I was kind of push into being this body posits activists than all this other kind of stuff in i was only twenty. You might be moving from the west coast to the east coast. You might be switching careers and you just need some coaching in some guidance. But i always encourage people to sit with somebody to get amazing perspective. I'm thankful for my therapist. I'm thankful for the growth and since we are on the topic of therapy and mental hell..

"Amber. Riley said that's the key to life making your own path. Set your own rules because there is not a set rule. There's not a set. Look there is not a set anything you make your own rules in your life. You make your own decisions. I remember the very first day. I woke up and went to work as an entrepreneur. The weeks leading up to that day were filled with anticipation and excitement. I felt like i was doing it. Finally i was starting my own business. And then i sat down at my computer and i paused. Where do i start. What was i supposed to do like literally. What tasks should i do right now. What action should i take. And suddenly i was hit with a surprising and unsettling feeling i felt adrift or un moored. I felt like i was floundering. A bit. I mean think about it up until that point i had worked in normal nine to five jobs and in these jobs i would come in each morning and i would work on the projects that had been given to me. I knew my company's goals because someone else set them. My direction was really clear. I largely just had to execute and now here i was living the dream and i had no idea how or where to start. You see many entrepreneurs leave the comfort of their nine to five jobs in search of freedom and no doubt. You'll find it here. You'll find more of it than you ever thought. Possible out here and that can become problematic especially in the early days because there are two sides to the freedom coin. One side is opportunity the ability to build an experience. Boundless growth the feeling you get when you realize the ceiling has been removed on the amount of money you can make. It's incredible but the opportunity side of the coin is balanced by the other side. The responsibility side the side. That says yes you are free. You are completely free and now you must chart your own course set your own direction. Put wind in your own sales. No one else is gonna do it for you. The responsibility side. It also says yeah. There's no ceiling on the amount of money you can make but i've also removed the floor as well so choose your next steps wisely so today i wanna talk about some tips for helping you put the wind in your sails to chart your own direction and your course and made some of the common pitfalls that entrepreneur's experience in this situation the opportunity that freedom brings is balanced by an equal if not greater sense of responsibility and one of your many jobs as an entrepreneur is to accept that responsibility. So let's dig in there now before we go on. I wanna point out one caveat for today's conversation. I'm assuming you've done the check. The box work of setting up your business. I'm assuming you formed an llc or some type of business entity. I'm assuming you've figured out a way to accept payment even if it's in the form of a paper check i'm assuming you have insurance and the barebones tools you need to execute your work and if you don't have those things start there but with that said if you've got all that and you're ready to take the next step. There are two buckets of action. I suggest new entrepreneurs take and they fall under the heading of working on your business and working in your business now if you haven't read it yet. A man by the name of michael gerber wrote an incredible book called the e myth revisited. Why most small businesses don't work and what to do about it. E myth means entrepreneur myth. And in that book he makes the distinction between working in your business which is doing the actual technical work that either creates your product or makes up your service etc. So like if you're starting a graphic design business. This means actually creating designs for people. If you're a plumber. This means actually performing plumbing jobs for people working in your business is what generates revenue for you now. In contrast working on your business is what creates the actual business structure around all of that work setting the vision and goals for the business creating systems and processes that run each aspect of it
