Texas officer charged with murder after shooting a 31-year-old Black man in Wolfe City, northeast of Dallas

"Jonathan Pryce, an African American shot by a white police officer. There has been lots of questions about It's over the last couple of days. Jim Ryan of ABC Radio News is watching the story for us, Jim Thanks very much for joining us. Tell us what happened. You know, we would. Saturday evening and again, you're gonna have to rely on what they said or what they had. It's like so many cases like this. A man named Jonathan Pryce, who lived in Wolf City, Texas, was well known, well liked around the community there. 31 year old, he said. You are his family said that he was near a convenience store. He saw this disturbance going on between a man and woman. He stepped in, tried to break it up. That's when the police showed up. A police officer named Shawn Lucas 22, year old police officer fairly new on the police department. There saw what was happening and tried to take Jonathan Pryce into custody. I didn't know what his role was in the whole thing. Price resisted that and was shot and killed. Now Lucas has hired the same attorney who represented Amber Geiger. Don't know if you remember that case, Dallas who was convicted out of shooting and killing a man in his own apartment that he now that all the sarees is now, our that lawyers now representing Shawn Lucas. He says that price was trying to take looses. Lucas is Taser away from him and that that's when he was shot and killed so they will see where this goes. The officer is on leave right now he's being held on a billion dollars bond until this whole thing is tired out. It is going to a grand jury. The Texas Rangers, the investigative agency, says that this appears to be non justifiable police shooting. Any videotape him. No. Well there there probably is the outside the convenience store. There were security cameras set up now whether they were turned on whether they have provided video. The police have not said. But if there is video, it's in the hands of investigators now will not be made public at least not yet. Maybe not even until there's a trial. So what happens next? Where are we in terms of? Well, what happens next? I guess that's the question. Well, it'll go to the grand jury. The grand jury will either indict Officer Lucas or declined to indict him. No bill him and he'll be turned loose that from there, then we'll be looking at a trial if he's true building on murder charges. There was a vigil held last night in Wolf City for Jonathan Pryce. Now we'll see where it does go in and find out more about what the Texas Rangers role in this. And what's the attorney for police officers. Jim Ryan from ABC

"The former Dallas police officer amber Geiger and let me just start off by saying. I don't think the threatened why it's war protests are appropriate now here's the deal amber Geiger former Dallas police officer she's relatively young and because we view everything through the prism of race she is white everybody I think knows the story by now last summer she's coming on home from her shift and she's she's worked like over time she gets off on the wrong floor at her apartment complex in Dallas she is apparently not on the phone she's at least allegedly sending like Macy messages to some guy that she seeing on the police department so she's tired she's distracted. he gets off on the fourth floor instead of the third floor she walks into the hallway of her of the apartment building but she's on the wrong floor she according to her testimony doesn't realize that she's on the wrong floor now there's all sorts of indicators as to why she should have noticed she's on the wrong floor but she says she's not paying attention to this and I think for you know I think most of us can perhaps relate have you ever gotten off on the wrong floor then realized Gee I'm on the wrong floor you ever look for your car in a parking garage and gotten off on the wrong floor she gets off on the wrong floor and does not notice the chief you know on the wrong floor she goes up to what she thinks is her apartment but it's not her apartment because she's one floor up doesn't notice the fact that you know. the number which is supposed to be with three eighteen or whatever she's in front of four eighteen doesn't notice the fact that the welcome mat is red instead of blue or or whatever so she she is distracted she goes to open the door the door is unlocked so she goes into this apartment thinking that she's going into her apartment was she's in somebody else's apartment and there's the apartment owner sitting light soft guys watching TV he stands up when you see somebody walking into his apartment she pulled out her service revolver and shoots and kills right so that's the underlying facts she is charged and as we talked about before in my opinion completely and totally appropriately convicted of first degree intentional homicide nets you know it's she's so she's convicted of this particular crime juries only out like an hour and a half to decide on her guilt okay no problem at all with that verdict it is appropriate what's interesting in Texas is the juries in cases like this have input into the the sentencing and what happens is yesterday the jury at the end of the sentencing phase of the trial not the guilt phase but the sentencing trial comes down in sentences her to ten years in prison the prosecution had recommended twenty eight years she gets a ten year sentence now the brother of the victim you perhaps saw the footage he says look I I don't so far as I'm concerned I don't think she needs to be in jail goes over and hugs are prosecution wanted twenty eight years she gets ten and immediately afterwards you have a number of quote unquote social justice advocates who are absolutely outrageous you know the phrase no justice no peace separate cetera that's what people are chanting the idea of being a relatively attractive white police officer shoots and kills a person of color and only gets ten years for one for. four seven nine nine one six twenty that is the accurate mortgage talking text like honestly don't remember if I said this on the air or off the to one of my teammates to saying what do you think she's going to get and. what I said was I think it's probably going to be somewhere between ten and fifteen years so it was ten I don't think that this wasn't an appropriate

"Would be give your life to Christ smiles that's that's some really powerful stuff again this is the brother of Bob and Jean who was shot and killed by this former police officer amber Geiger and then something strange happens. I don't know if this is possible but okay can I give road please so basically what happens after that is the judge says yes this is really this is unchartered territory this stuff just doesn't happen. and they give each other a very long hug it was very emotional and I gotta tell you the first time I saw this yesterday I got a little choked up it was. extremely powerful stuff so I I wanted to give this brother a lot of credit for doing something that I don't think many of us would be able to do that is forgive but now I want to get to the part of the story that I did not know about that we did not know about I said that I did not believe this woman was racist I didn't believe that race was involved because there was no evidence to support that will guess what now we have some evidence to support something differently and maybe the jury had this information but I don't think it came out in court until the sentencing phase so I don't know if the jury had this information but this is really bad stuff and again if you're just joining us we're speaking about amber Geiger getting ten years that was the sentence lot of people think it was a light sentence and I'm gonna tell you why I think it was actually a license in a second. so this is Martin Luther king junior day parade amber Geiger is on the police force she's working on Martin Luther king day in one chain of text messages between Geiger and others they op had to work Martin Luther king junior day they're talking about that this was January two thousand and fifteen one person in this tax change asked of the parade one does this end lots of laughs Geiger replied when Martin Luther king is dead oh wait. first of all. I've never heard anyone make a joke about the death of Martin Luther king junior never a friend family member anybody people I work with I've never heard anybody make a joke like that so that is beyond reprehensible to start then I move on to this where amber Geiger they're talking a little bit. about I believe they're they're talking about racist police police off African American police officers were quote is damn I was at this area with five different black officers not races but damn one of her police officer friend said then Geiger replies by saying not racist but just have a different way of working and it shows. so that that you know she's saying that African American police officers work differently than than white police officers if that's not racist I don't know what is and then it gets worse September fourth two thousand and eight turn a person named Etheridge appeared to play fully offer to give Geiger a German shepherd she makes a joke saying she may be a racist talking about the dog I don't think is anything wrong with that saying yeah I got a dog I think the dogs are racist because the dog I don't know barks in front of African Americans okay big deal that's not a big deal but this is where god your response and this is very telling Geiger responds by saying I wish I could have one but not in the support apartment she added seconds later it's okay I'm the same in work in research in response to the dog her friend is talking about a racist dog she says I'm the same. now her defense attorney said that they should not be admissible in court clearly it was in the sentencing phase this clearly shows in my personal opinion. this one is a racist Hey she's made comments. joking around about Martin Luther king's death it's one thing if you make a racist joke I don't condone that but joking around about the death of Martin Luther king her friends saying she is a racist dog and then she replies by saying I'm the same. and it just so happens that she kills an African American man well guess what my opinions on this case have changed..

"Police officer amber Geiger's been sentenced to ten years in prison after being convicted of murdering a man she had mistakenly thought was in her apartment in a dramatic turn of events after the sentencing was handed down the brother of the victim hugs her in court and said he forgives her I forgive you. and. I know if you go to god and ask him. he will forgive you. and I don't think anyone could soon again I'm speaking for myself I'm not even better for my family. but I love you just like anyone else. really remarkable scene there with the brother and and he he and both of John's killer hugging each other for about forty seconds apparently and while that was happening the judge was getting teared up and using some tissue to. dabbing her eyes and then she hugged amber Geiger. the remarkable stuff Clayton level has been following the story from the beginning and he joins us now tell us more about yesterday's of delivery of the jury sentenced morning Clayton. name good morning it really was quite an emotional moment yesterday in and out of the courtroom as at the same time that brand John was embracing amber guide her there was on rats in the Dallas County courthouse people chanting No justice no peace but there were a lot of people at home there are a lot of people even in that courthouse that we're looking at brand John during his victim impact statement and I truly feel like if he sent a message to a lot of people who were boiling up with anger in those moments some people who may have been considering attending some of the protests that were held last night that may have had a change of thought because of what Brent John did I spoke with several people who said it was extremely inspiring and that they actually were able to take a deep breath after that and kind of reassess their emotions and what was going out not to say there were no press protest there are about fifty people last night outside the courthouse that marched through downtown but for the most part it was call and there's and it seems like there's even division in Botham John's family where you have the eighteen year old brother who is willing to forgive and his mother who who seems to be having a little bit harder time with that. yeah you know over Allison John both John's mother focused more after the sentence on what needs to happen in the city of Dallas moving forward how something like this can't happen again she focused on what she called corruption within the Dallas police department and within the city of Dallas she really didn't focus much on the sentence when talking about the ten year student of both the Machon mother said that you know she gets what she get that she they went to the jury and the jury made the ruling in that the justice system and she left it at that but she did speak for about two maybe three minutes on how her experience in Dallas is showing her that there is corruption within the Dallas police department obviously we heard in testimony in this trial allegations that some police were trying to give amber Geiger special treatment specific way Mike model with the Dallas police association reports stories about the in car recorder being turned off that night and things like that so that's what I was in John was focusing on moving forward more than the ten year sentence and the Dallas police chief Renee hall was quick to come right out and say we're going to do an infant tornal investigation and all of this right. that's right yeah and you know what the protests that was held last night actually ended up focusing more on that aspect of it did it did on the ten year sentence now again there are people who do feel like amber Geiger did not get enough that the sentence wasn't high enough but what the rally in protest that I was there last night really turned into was more of a call for Mike models firing and also for their resignation rather and for the firing of Martin Rivera who is amber Geiger's former police partner in the allegation there is that he deleted text messages with Geiger the night of the shooting which some people call tampering with evidence from what we understand my mother said he would have some sort of a common after all this was said and done but we haven't heard from him yet can we expect some sort of statement maybe today or. but we can certainly hope for that I reached down the this week to Mike Latta and he was maintaining throughout this trial that he could not speak because he essentially could be called to the stand that's off the table now this thing is done she's got ten years she's already started serving her sentence and that's it so at some point Mike Monday is going to have to come out and say something and usually he's pretty transparent about doing that however this is a little bit different of a situation with him being the main person in question here so yeah I would expect to hear from like minded today whether we will or not we'll see it but he's gonna happen talk at some point we're talking click Nevil whose following Corsi amber Geiger conviction and now sentencing and Clayton a you know it's your speculation but this is what people are talking about first of all we were surprised that they came back with a with a verdict as quickly as they did after nearly five hours or so of of consideration and then we thought well they're probably going to give her a pretty heavy sentence and only ten years is the jury any any members of the jury that you know of are going to me making any public comments are asking any questions they're allowed to do so but they haven't so far right. yeah they haven't yet a you know maybe one or two you will speak at some point this is such a high profile trial that that there may be a lot of jurors you want to lay low but it will be interesting and hopefully we can hear from some of those jurors as to how that sentence that will came about again if you look at that if you look at this it's about the average penalty according to a lot of legal experts that you would get in a manslaughter conviction because the manslaughter ranges to to twenty years murder was five to ninety nine in here she is getting ten which is basically right smack dab in the middle of that manslaughter charge so they get the murder conviction but the sentence is more reminiscent of manslaughter very interesting there a you know a just from watching the trial all week and I said this yesterday before the verdict came down I'm not sure that the jury could go with the manslaughter charge because of the fact that amber Geiger said her intent was to kill I really feel like at that point that took manslaughter off the table forcing the jury to go with murder and at that point that they were there and it was up to them on the sentencing and they settled on ten years so that's speculation based on observing the trial but that certainly is a possibility I am very interesting do we know where she's going to serve out her time it at what prison. yeah I believe it'll be in Huntsville not she's not there yet you need at least there it again last night I'm not exactly sure on when they will transfer her but at some point amber Geiger will go to Huntsville. hi Clayton thank you so much sure you've done a great job covering this story for us here in Dallas and also for the network and the rest of the country we appreciate we appreciate your presence in the KLIF newsroom once in awhile too. all right Dave thanks all right "To talk about a case that is going on in Dallas where I live and have lived here now for seventeen years I am a big pro law enforcement guy I'm a rule of law guy and I think anybody is willing to put a flag on their shoulder and risk their life every day for us whether it's in a battle field in a far away land or whether on the battlefield in inner city streets someplace or or whether it's a rescue person out run into some farmer's house. if you're gonna put a flag on your shoulder and step up for America I salute you. so now we have this case out of Dallas amber Geiger the Dallas police officer let me let me break it down for you what happened here in Dallas you gonna know what happened because it's all anybody's talking about but anywhere else it's it's getting a lot of coverage as a case of black and white hello a white cop shoot an innocent black man that did happen but this is not a story about a white cop shooting a black man it's not about an innocent man being shot by a police officer it's about an innocent man being shot by someone who appeared to be an idiot at the time and it is an absolutely sad story so amber Geiger's coming home from work late at night she was on duty she gets off she's in uniform she comes into what she thinks is her apartment door. she opens up the apartment door. and there is a shadow we figure she demands if you believe her testimony show your hand she said she couldn't see his hands whether he did or not and she believes she's in her apartment she shoots fires and kills this man. here's the only problem. amber Geiger Dallas police officer parked on the wrong floor in her Dallas apartment building just two blocks away but from the Dallas police headquarters by the way. on the wrong floor. she got off on the wrong floor was walking down the hall doesn't notice that there's potted plants in front of a neighbor's door that isn't on her floor she doesn't notice that the apartment numbers are different she doesn't notice that the doormat to this apartment that she goes into has a red door mat hers has none she doesn't notice when she walked into the apartment that there is a a table there a big one. she doesn't have one. and she doesn't notice that her key would have turned red which it did the detectives showed this on video. and they moved into the door the door was unlocked she went into the wrong apartment. now when the story first broke I didn't know what to believe but there's no way anybody goes into the wrong apartment come on but as I listen to her tell the story and as I listen to her testimony I absolutely one hundred percent believe this woman shot this man by accident when she tended to pull the trigger clearly she admits that but it was an accident in the fact that she went into the wrong apartment. and does that make it murder. well the district attorney in Dallas charged her with murder now when I try to do is put myself in the shoes of the family of the man who was killed bottom gene. a black man by all accounts the greatest guy fun successful work for a big accounting firm I I believe. and he shifted apartments watching TV a police officer storms and shoot them somebody's got to pay for that right if I put myself in the shoes of that family. what do we convict her of murder one. senator prison for god knows how long. that's a problem to me. they charged her with murder one why did they charged with murder one I believe the fault was. we're either gonna get a convict they they had to get a conviction of murder one or they could have gone down a manslaughter but manslaughter isn't really applicables here. because amber Geiger admitted she kill them she admitted she made a decision to pull the trigger. that's not manslaughter masters we didn't mean to do it she meant to do it she just thought she was in the wrong apartment. jury comes back murder one. what do you think. is she guilty of murder one she guilty of anything should she have walked the jury said murder one that's what came back eight three three three three Gorka eight three three three three four six seven five two I want to hear what you have to say about this now amber Geiger's testimony was certainly compelling. sh but she made some mistakes and the mistakes she made I believe led ultimately to her conviction so as we talk about this case and what should or should not have happened I'll play some portions of her testimony and and my heart aches for the Geiger family and amber Geiger. my heart aches for the ball from gene family as well this is an all out travesty now does do any buddy any good descend amber Geiger to prison for decades. does it do anybody any good. I don't think it does should she be punished somehow probably. murder once a tall tall order though listen listen to amber Geiger testimony this was Friday last week. keep the.

I don't know what that to the test let's go to some apartment complex indoors and have somebody stand there and scream. put your hands up three times and see if anybody in the building hears about you they do I did read today that her apartment was vastly different that is really yes did not have as much furniture the place but the Tate there's no table it was hers with half of our table yeah I did I don't know anything about hers and and the red carpet he had out front yeah I didn't have. yeah the format. I mean. can you take the jury down there and walk around did do that that all the time we are from the big deal I mean I think that for but I mean probably more so the the prosecutor but even to a degree maybe the defense and that is okay walk down the hall. put your head down is there a phone ever walk down the hall let's see if you can tell that was go upstairs and do the same to her place or let's also yeah I don't see very many years. well there just for TV or is that really done in real life can't be done I can't imagine that you're coming back and having a walk I can't. can imagine but by the same token I can't imagine a jury. giving our murder conviction yeah I know I know. I can't either. I cannot see for the life of me how she doesn't do more than a few years view many more than two yeah I just don't know how that could even be possible and again the charges murder. manslaughter are not guilty not guilty that's all that's on the table again none of that negligent homicide whatever that is. I Tracy Ryan K. LBJ. hi and thank you for taking my call I in addition everything you understand about the apartment in the inside being different I didn't hear this part but what about the entrance the key or whatever she had to get in died when she having gauge that and would not have not click to writer done something I mean it's a it's a key pad like you would have a hotel that you swipe and a and it's I think this is been well we don't know what's proven but she claims that the door was slightly ajar and she just was she went to swipe her kids she pushed the door open. that doesn't resonate well either I mean it it's it it's all shady also eighty in my opinion sure but you have to ask yourself do you think she did it on purpose and if so why. yeah that that one of the top four in other than the fact that she was going to be a hero cop you had a moment opportunity definitely saying that I could possibly think of but there's no hero hero in this is he there's no dudes accountant watching a full of our eyes I mean yeah there's no crime stopping to it. may the bride that she so confused and so scared I mean that's her basic argument she so confusion that the wrong place and she opened the door and saw a guy and thought it was a burglar and reacted the way a cop well should believe there are as yeah and you also said in your listeners decided and where where it's a cop training where was her her by the other option very hazy her running you know calling for backup and backing out and leaving and whatever so it seems like everything failed her well I'm gonna go even further I don't know what this would mean for me as a juror but if we were sitting here Tracy I'd be saying wait a minute not only did she not fall back in any kind of training she didn't even yell at him I mean I think she's a liar I actually believe not. I had a real problem. that's the whole shady part yeah I think it's it's all little shady for sure because it's not as we get it approved except what did other people here because the dudes dad so all we have is her worry and number one thing on her word has I think been disproven. yeah I did see the harsh here charge. go ahead go ahead okay and I did whatever crying in and perhaps some being callous but I felt like it was more out of fear what was gonna happen to verses were more. maybe locale from my side but that's how I took it from what I saw on the news yeah. well gene G. losers are people so they're gonna. she was crying in her testimony but they also learned that she was back to talking about getting drunk and sexting weather yeah right the prosecution if that means anything on our right you know it's up it's up to your feelings about it but they have the prosecution said why I mean basically trying to prove a house said issue she was sexting two days later. when she said remember she also said that and we I think we played he just can't understand her but she said that if she wishes it was he had the gun. I'm not gonna be quite so calluses to say I'm I believe she's upset about it. I just I now have real questions about whether not she's telling the truth about.
