Professor Ben Burgis on His Proposed 'Baby Steps Toward Justice' in America

"With us tonight is Ben or doctor Burgess or Ben Burgess, however you want to say it. We're going to be debating and we'll see where it leads us. Democrat socialism versus conservative populism, super thrilled, that Ben is here tonight to have this discussion. It'll start with some opening statements. And then we'll take it from there. The two minutes is yours? Doctor bridges. Thank you, mister Kirk. Thank you to town circle for setting this up. So I'm a democratic socialist because I don't think anybody deserves to have less power or dramatically worse life because of factors that are outside of their control. So that's the first part. That's the philosophical basis. Concretely, I think it's obscene. The way we have an economic system where workers at Amazon warehouses skip bathroom breaks because they're worried about falling behind in their quotas and their boss literally owns his own spaceship. Now we can argue about what a fairer society would look like. I can contrast what I would see as utopia with what you would, and I'm always up for that kind of thing. I'm sure we'll get into some of it later. But what I really like to start out with is not so much that end point as the baby steps towards justice that we could take right now. Things like raising taxes and rich people to pay for social programs that would benefit the rest of us, things like raising the minimum wage for the working poor. Things like make it easier for ordinary people to organize unions so they can have at least a little bit of a say at what happens in the workplaces where they spend half their waking lives, and I got to say, what I was confused with me about you, Charlie, is that I see you say that you're not like an old style kind of corporate Republican and the rigging Bush William F. Buckley kind of mold and certainly the politicians who seem to be most enthusiastic about people like Donald Trump or JD Vance now, make a big deal saying they're populists. They really want to help struggling people in the heartland. And if that's true, I don't really get why you don't support any of those things that I just

California Bill Targets Fast-Paced Working Conditions at Warehouses

"Lawmakers are weighing the first legislation of its kind. Which could give warehouse workers new power to fight speed quotas. Npr's alina seljuk reports. Hurry hurry hurry send you about. Eta says that's how it felt when she worked at an amazon warehouse in southern california. All you see people bending down scanning every individual items getting to screening individual items scanning to wayne it out having to run to the other side put it in the conveyor and start over again. She rotated through several jobs for ten hours a day. she would bend twist reach scan. Unwrap re wrap hoping to hit two hundred items. Our i rarely ever saw anyone to use the restroom or less you know. They talked to some morley. Do mind scanning this item like every three minutes just so might time off. Task doesn't accumulate cover for time off. Task is carefully watched by amazon. The company says it's to make sure all technology is in working order but also to identify underperforming workers too much time off task over time and the algorithm can flag you as a slacker and get you fired some workers leg bharata who is now an organizer with a warehouse. Workers resource center have argued that the pace of work is unhealthy unsustainable. That's what prompted new legislation by california assemblywoman laurenti gonzalez were absolutely targeting. The practices of amazon that are being picked up quite frankly by other retailers the legislation. Ab seven one is a rare bill to specifically target large warehouses. It's complex but has two key themes the main one says productivity quotas cannot come at the expense of health and safety. If they do the bill would give workers more legal power to fight them. The second is transparency giving workers the representatives and government officials more access to detailed records of quotas and workers actual rates. What we know is that amazon workers get hurt. Twelve times as often as other warehouse

Activists Demand Answers After Nooses Found At Amazon Construction Site

"Month ago, nooses began appearing at an Amazon warehouse construction site in Connecticut. Police now say that only two of the eight ropes found by the sites workers were actual nooses as that investigation continues. Social justice advocates are trying to work with Amazon and the buildings contractor to make sure workers there feel safe. Connecticut Public Radio's Frankie Graziano has more Windsor, Connecticut Police chief Donald Melanson told NPR this morning only two of eight ropes reported on the site are being investigated his nooses that's news to Scott X S. Dale of the ACP, who's been talking to the contractor. We've been dealing with this situation close to six weeks now, everything that they've told us that the ropes that they've seen Would be considered a noose for as Dale. It's more confusion on top of an already confusing situation. He's just trying to make sure workers are okay. The most important thing is the individuals that On the site that are scared, and they shouldn't be scared. They should be able to give a hard day's work and get home safe to their families. The noose is a symbol of hate, and it stresses Corin Prescott out. She led a protest at the site last week. Jeff Bezos Promises to Make Amazon “Earth’s Best Employer” in Farewell Letter

"As we know. Jeff bezos is relinquishing his. Ceo title later this year and so this morning. He released his final letter to shareholders as amazon ceo. And it's interesting. He directly addressed one of the elephants in the room and suggested that amazon should extend its famous obsession with customer experience to cover care for amazon's own employees as well quoting cnbc. Bazars pointed to the recent union election outcome. At one of amazon's warehouses as an example of why the company needs to address challenges within its workforce last week amazon secured enough votes to defeat a historic unionization. Drive at its bessemer. Alabama warehouse which if successful would have represented the first union at a us amazon facility while the voting results were lopsided and our direct relationship with employees is strong. It's clear to me that we need a better vision for how we create value for employees. A vision for their success. Bazo wrote amazon has famously held a core set of leadership principles chief among them being customer obsessed in the future bazo said he wants amazon to do the same for its employees quote. Despite what we've accomplished it's clear to me that we need a better vision for our employees success. Bazo said we have always wanted to be earth's most customer centric company. Amazon Warehouse Workers Reject Union Efforts

"On friday. Amazon warehouse workers in bessemer alabama voted to reject the effort to unionize. So what does this mean for amazon. The fight over labor conditions at the retail giant chang in this sure daily charge here with us to break it down his amazon expert. Laura tullow welcome lart. Thank you for having me. So breakout what happened on friday on friday. The allergy finished tallying votes union election at the best in warehouse and the with the really decisive win for amazon so to speak in that the workers rejected the union. So that was the. That was the full tally. there could still be. There is likely to be an attraction to the election and further litigation with the over the matter but the votes as they were counted. Friday were for rejecting the union by margin of more than two. Wow yeah that's that's a big deal. Considering that this effort was i mean this effort made headlines around the country. Even guard support senator bernie sanders and present. Joe biden is a very high profile fights and he says why it was so roundly defeated. It's really hard to say. you know. There were several factors. Of course there is the fact that this warehouse provides jobs in an area where the minimum wage is a belief seven twenty five an hour and they pay more than fifteen dollars an hour for starting wage. A lotta times in union elections in place. Do worry that their employers will want to leave the area or lay people off or more employees as many people if they're having to deal with the union Do the cost and that sort of thing. People get their jobs and those are really valuable jobs in that region. They're paying thousands of them. If the really big deal in that community to half those jobs

Amazon Beats Back Union, but Workplace Technology Questions Remain

"As you've probably heard by now. The effort to unionize an amazon warehouse in bessemer alabama was unsuccessful. Though the union says it will challenge the vote it would have affected just a fraction of amazon's workforce but it captured the attention of the country at a time when e commerce has become a lifeline and the welfare of essential. Workers has come under threat. Janice fine is a professor of labor studies and employment relations at rutgers university. She says the union push at amazon and its defeat highlight the growing role of technology in the workplace. Especially amazon's they use surveillance technology including scanners that workers use to track the rate at which they sort and pack items. Mandatory daily workers surveys a powered camera systems to detect social distancing violations. They use navigation. Software item scanners wristbands thermal cameras. Security cameras recorded footage to survival. The workforce so you have this combination of surveillance for productivity targets and that same surveillance lends itself to being able to monitor workers social activities without a union in place. Then ken workers push back against this kind of stuff. How what kind of tools do they have. Workers are pushing back all over the country. And that's the thing that i think is really important to bear in. Mind that workers in new jersey workers in inland empire in In california workers in chicago these are organizations that have for years. You've been working with amazon. Workers in warehouses and fulfillment centers and just by kind of getting the story out there. They've drawn the country's attention to the problems with amazon's business model. You know by organizing and getting this far getting to an election and so they see this as kind of a long haul fight.

Amazon union organizers deflated as vote tilts against them

"Workers at a warehouse in bessemer alabama voted against unionizing defeating. The hopes of labor organizers that this would be amazon's first unionized workplace in the united states would have been a rare victory and they traditionally add a union south but workers voted overwhelmingly against unionization by a margin of more than two to one here to talk to us about that. Is stephen basan. He is with our member station w. b. m. in birmingham. Hello good morning. Was this outcome. Surprise won't for a lot of people here yes. There was a lot of excitement. A real sense union had a chance now where this house is located about. Twenty minutes outside of birmingham surrounded by trees. Really not much else in on that. Drive there from birmingham. You see lots of pro union signs. There've been lots of rallies here with big headline names like actor danny glover bernie sanders coming through a congressional delegation but add the six thousand workers that actually work at this warehouse. Very few were showing up at these rallies. Mostly it's been crowds with out of state organizers for the unions or locals in alabama democrats shirts and not many people actually working for amazon so really we didn't know what most workers were thinking until the actual vote count this week where they delivered a definitive. No i mean so much. Attention has been sort of lavished on this vote. How is the mood. Change to after it was pretty crushing. Defeat more than two to one against the union and union. Try to keep up a brave face during a zoom press conference on friday. After the results organizers in the couple of workers spoke including emmett ashford who works at the amazon warehouse there. He sent a message to workers telling them to not get discouraged. The floodgates opened. We can't stop it. So i hope everybody has to get day this news as not discouraged as and we are holding our head high marching or and we will get what we deserve.

"Bottles. And i'm at holiday times in a warehouse. Employees have one pricier consumer electronics. You know the kind of the background here. The end the did really a great job Kind of I'm sorry the information did a really good job of Breaking this down. Is that increasingly. These warehouse employees are handing off more test automation. It and they're becoming much more a kind of atomic and routine sir. Does it seem like a good way to kind of i. Guess keep things. Keep the synapses fresh for these employees. Inmates i when i first read about. Fc games which stands for fulfillment center games. I was like. I mean it seems a little like okay. I work in a warehouse. I- amazon notoriously working long hours. And it's it's it can be grueling work and somewhat monotonous rate and i am competing against my peers for virtual. Pets is a great idea. Well if it's something that brings me joy on the job and this is my job and this is where i work. I don't see this as inherently a terrible idea and as amazon tells the information this is optional. So it's not like you are forced to play games to the death against replays. They wanna make seem like that's what amazon's doing because it doesn't sound like that at all to me however knowing that it's a little bit of a grey area how much i don't know i'm always wanting to play the arcade style mini games and rich. You're my coworker. And you don't well. I'm racking up some virtual goods. At what point do those virtual goods become anything else besides goodwill towards me well at the workplace. If never then okay it's optional. Whatever it might be fun might not. Everybody has to play the same games. If it does become something where i don't know i can say i've got two hundred points now i wanna. Tv type thing. Then i think it becomes a. It's it's a little bit more problematic because you can't expect all employees to want to do that or have the time where across the where cross the line for me is if during a performance evaluation manager go. You know sarah. I noticed you only had two virtual pets your snake. Roger has thirty seven. I'm just noticing that i worked in. I have not worked in a warehouse. Jobs so i cannot speak to that but i have worked in like repetitive data. Entry jobs where. There's not a lot of thought that has to go into what you need to do. Necessarily it's it's a lot of procedural stuff and i know i built in not virtual games but different tasks to kind of break that up so that you know i just my eyes would glaze over an you just kind of stopped paying attention stuff. End up making mistakes. I think amazon is realizing that as these tasks because some extremely simplified and you don't have you don't have that kind of latitude of person to be like okay. I'm going to do this thing. That just is is a different activity to kind of a different part of my brain. I think there is value in giving employees and opportunity. Like if i was in a data. Entry added you know. Have a pacman. You know eat up A dollar figure that a plug into a former something that for two minutes. I guess it'd be okay. I also think there is like a little bit of a team building of being like hair. Warehouses the top in ohio. And you know we're top at this game and you know that's everybody play on their. You know play for five minutes and we can. We can win that set of steak knives or something like that. I don't think that's inherently bad again when it comes to the performance evaluation stuff. That's where i would. I would definitely raise some eyebrows at that point. Yeah i'm with you on that well volkswagen's power day events. The automaker announced not virtual pets..

"There's there's a six month lead time to kind of get something from the factory custom As a result of a lot of the shortage as opposed to just buying something. That's on the lot so you know Obviously as these vehicles become more tech platforms very tightly integrated with a number of you know with tons of computer systems and stuff like that not surprising to see this impact but you know to see pieces of being left out as a solution to that surprised a to to see that. Sarah no not surprised. I. we've been talking about changes. And how many markets. It's affecting for months many months now. What i wonder is okay. Let's say that. I am in the market for a new. Gm truck. and i. I mean maybe. I don't realize it but let's say i do realize All right well. I'm going to have one mile per gallon. Fuel economy is not the end of the world but it it does matter right. It all adds up. Would that be something that the company might say. Hey we're going to give you a good deal in this truck and other years when everything kind of catches back up we might be able to offer you some rebates or to figure out some firmware update. So that you are able to get the truck that you wanted in the first place because we wanna sell you the check right now. I just wonder i wonder how. How much leeway we have on this or is it just sort of s well but i also think is interesting as we saw a couple of years ago that there was. It seemed like there was an increasing race for software on these. We saw a lot of these real operating systems. Either getting acquired or passed around or being seen more assets when the chips apply was stable enough that they could be counted on. You know a roger. I know you had some thoughts about kind of the overall importance kind of this chip ecosystem for for a lotta these major companies. You know Any kind of suppliers really so one of the one of the one of the things takeaways from this is understand that auto manufacturing is one of the tenth bowl industries for any manufacturing connie even if manufacturing doesn't make a good deal of a country's economy and that manufacturing sector sector automotive manufacturing is king. The ability to create a supply line of Semiconductors domestically in order to supply their own needs without having their entire production line put at risk because overseas supplies are somehow crimped either due to trade conflicts or manufacturing issues or. What have you and amazon. I think you're going to say he. The eu just did a push to increase their production of chips domestically to twenty percent of global output by twenty thirty because it's deemed such a vital industry. And i think you'll see a lot of other governments. Take a similar attacked. Well if you have any thoughts about chips the automotive industry or all of them or anything in between join our conversation or discord which you can win by linking to a patriot accounts head patriae.
