Please And Thank You (MM #3884)

"The mason minute. With Kevin mason. I was reading an interesting story the other day about people suggesting we say please and thank you when talking with our personal assistants. You know our Google Assistant are Amazon Alexa because it teaches good manners especially to children. I'll be honest with you, I'd never thought about it. It's a machine. I'm not talking to a human being. There's nothing to be courteous too. It's a machine. It doesn't know any better. I don't use please and thank you. Never even thought of using please and thank you. And it's very interesting to think about, do we need to start doing that? Especially when around kids because manners and courtesy are very important and obviously our world has a problem with that right now. About being courteous about respecting others, I guess Google and Amazon could have suggested we do that. They could have rewarded us for doing that, but they don't. I don't think they ever thought about it either. But it's an interesting thought process. It came out of England first and it's starting to spread across the world. Should we start saying please and thank you to our personal assistants, even though they're just machines, something definitely worth thinking about, because manners are sorely lacking these days

Price Fixing (MM #3841)

"The NASA minute. With Kevin mason. I remember years ago when I was living in Virginia Beach, so it would have to be high school college era, a story about some of the Chevrolet dealerships in town, price fixing. So no one dealer was cutting the other dealer's profits. What's interesting to me though is, is I've seen stories about Apple and price fixing and Amazon and Google and price fixing for all their electronic tools. But I never see anything come about because of it. If you want to buy an Amazon Alexa, if you want to buy, even an iPhone, you're basically going to pay the exact same price no matter where you shop, whether it's from the manufacturer, whether it's Walmart, whether it's Best Buy whatever it is. It's all because a price fixing. What I don't understand why they don't get in trouble for it. Got me started on this the other day, I was looking for a new seat cushion. I like the purple seat cushions and they used to have them at bed bath beyond, but they don't have them anymore. They stopped carrying them. When I went online, the only places to find them were Amazon, or purple, and it's all the same exact price. They're making it so the only way you can get it is from the manufacturer themselves. So I guess they can price fix and get away with it.

"And so quite a few of our participants have shown a lot of excitement towards it. We're actually in our pilot piloting in the same community, which asked for games last year with a different device. And so I think that's one of the that's one of the game changing differences or big differences that we see. Because you can call your loved ones and you can send them a hug. Those are all great features. But being able to interact and then play games and have them and guess your favorite character or play bingo, those sort of things are kind of very, very nice and a lot different than a tablet or a computer. And have you heard of stories of people I know this is like you said a pilot project. So it's not a huge sample size, but have you heard of stories using them to help with their actual medical histories or medications or reminders? I know that there's a lot of interest in the medical community in terms of using voice technology to help with that. Is there anything there that you can comment on Emily? I would say the reminders are definitely something that our seniors have been using. I think the medical reminders, maybe it's just because our sample size has been so healthy that they're a little bit medical reminders are a bit less necessary, but I think that is for sure something, even if it's cooking or those types of things are all are all really enjoyed and I think just the easiness of it, the ease of use to just be able to tell it to remind you is such a such a great feature. Wonderful. And we are go ahead and add something on top of that. I think what is really interesting about this partnership is that we are providing feedback to the Amazon team and we're working quite closely because the Canadian version of the device and app has customized for us as compared to the American one. And we would really like to build and evolve on that to make sure that we can take advantage of the new things that are being released and either the firmware or the device itself. That's wonderful. So as you got this pilot project, and you're about to roll out the main project, what are the biggest surprises that you have learned being involved with Amazon and these echo devices versus other programs that you've done? What is the main difference of the big takeaways that you have come across? Maybe this is a good one for both of you. Maybe you can share each of you for your pointer to who wants to start. I can go first. So again, this is something that is a story from our experiences between the two programs. So.

"Used some images and mobile device management software that we can then reconfigure devices, whether they be tablets, or laptops, but we can all of the pre installed setup already be there. And sometimes that also allows us to when you want a particular application or program be installed. We can begin then remotely push that. With Amazon Alexa, we are not there yet, but we've kind of we do train the trainer as Emily had mentioned. And given the fact that it's quite simple to set up as compared to a tablet, it makes it it makes it a lot easier to then operationalize that delivery model. And go ahead. Definitely are, oh, sorry. Can you hear me okay? Yes, please, please go ahead, yes. Okay. Yeah, I was going to say to our mentors have so much experience at explaining things to people over the phone that even for our pilot part of this program, we worked with 14 seniors to start. Our mentors pretty much had it down so that they could help, even if the senior didn't have access to zoom or another video conferencing platform, they knew things so well that they could just help them on their landline or whatever it was that they were working with. So I think that that's something that we always try to make sure that our mentors are so comfortable with it that they can pretty much do it in their sleep. Go at it, right. No, that's great. So I would love to hear some stories about people that are using these devices. How is it affecting their lives? Emily, can you share some stories about now like the results of this program and the way people are using these equi devices? For sure, yeah. So we're right at the we're kind of at the end of the pilot right now and starting the big part of the program, the mass deployment part. So I know we're going to have a whole ton more stories, but even from the pilot, there were some things that really touched me. One of our recipients was a long-term care home. And one of the seniors in the long-term care home, they reported back that senior was using Alexa to change the music to match the culture of the PSW who would come in in the morning and help the senior get ready..

Chief Global and Innovation Officer Sanjeev Shetty Tells Us What Connected Living Is All About

"I wanted to quickly take a minute just to talk about connected living who we are and what we've been doing for the past decade or so. So we're based on Quincy masks. We've been around for over ten years, really leading with technology and programs to help communities connect protect and engage residents, families and employees. Regardless of where they live, they could be in a home setting. This would be in any level of living within a senior living lifeline community. Or in a memory care setting, we actually help them connect with families friends, residents and employees. And obviously we've seen this past year, you know, it's been a marathon, but one of the silver linings coming out of it has been just the pace of innovation bread. And we've heard that both some pets and the folks from constant companion mark that innovation has really been in the forefront, whether it's voice for other technologies that have really reshaped the healthcare landscape. And what I wanted to do on this slide is just take a minute to talk about our ecosystem. We at the very core we have a HIPAA compliant cloud based platform what we call as the CMS system. It's a web based admin panel. And what that does is it helps push content out to any of these endpoints that you see around the circle, whether it's the native mobile apps that were created on Android and iOS, whether it's that interim television channel that we bring in through your cable provider or the Apple TV app that we created during the pandemic, making that experience very interactive. Obviously, voice is front and center and is a key part of our strategy on all of our platforms. We were very fortunate to be tapped on the shoulder by Amazon Alexa very early in the days of voice and we have created our own Alexa senior skill with over 200 prompts. And obviously that translates to other platforms as well, such as the robotics that you're going to be able to witness your in the short while. And we've also got really state of the art digital signage. One of the unique things about our signage is that we have a native asset controls 100% of the real estate on the finance, so we can literally do things like integrate with a community social feed. We could customize and design any part of that signage experience. And then of course, you have people who still want your printed newsletters and calendars. We have that

"Hey Terry here Saturday boy was a busy week. Thank you for joining us for all the different events that happened the voice, Dan our spaceship or web events in the augmented reality space, as well as voice, live. It's been busy and it's been fantastic and rewarding and thank you so much for being part of it. Today is Saturday and that means that we cover a couple of wage demands that you can say to Lexi. And here we go, let's get right into them. These are some fun things. You can say, the first one that I'll share with you is, you can simply say Lexi, translate wage fill in the language of your choice. Whether it's Spanish or French or whatever the case may be, or the other option is you can say Lexi, how do you say and then fill in the blank with your phrase in French or in Spanish, Etc, and she will translate the phrase for you and she's pretty good at it and in my experience it's worked quite well. So there's something that you can do that's kind of fun and also useful. Here's Kind of fun. One, you can say Lexi are you left-handed and see what she says to that? And finally, here's one that's a little more practical, but if you're not sure which bank information, Lexi is sending to the cloud. You can simply ask that you can say Lexi. How do I know if audio is sent to the cloud? And she can give you a little tutorial on some of the features of Lexi that help you to determine what is being sent to the cloud. So, there you go. A couple of things that you can try a couple of fun ones, a couple of practical ones and hope you have a wonderful Saturday and I will talk to you again tomorrow..

Amazon Alexa Gets New Voices, Including Actors Melissa McCarthy and Samuel L. Jackson

"This month. Alexa is going to sound a little bit. Different on july fifteenth the tech giant rolled out an update to its digital voice assistant to include a second voice option. As you know amazon's assistant typically has like a feminine sounding voice with this update. You can change that to a more masculine voice setting this all up his quite simple. You just say the assistant's name followed by quote. Change your voice and quote but that's not all there's an additional wake word you can use in place of alexa. That new word is ziggy Basically it works the same way instead of saying the primary name of amazon's digital assistant You can say ziggy instead. If you're a fan of gigi and you've never tried to swap out the wake word and you kind of want to try it out. Anyway you have some other choices to You can use amazon. You can use echo or you can use computer And the way to do this is really simple. Just like with the change. Your voice option. You can make a query to the assistant and say change the wake word to whatever you want Another way to do this too is open up the app for the voice assistant go to the menu. Select your settings than device settings. Then you go to the device that you want to update with this new wake word and then you choose the when you want and that's it now if you don't want either of these options for voices you can actually add a little bit of celebrity flare After introducing an option awhile. Back to add actor. Samuel jackson's voice to queries amazon is much similar offerings featuring actress melissa mccarthy an nba legend shaquille. O'neal so the way it works is you kind of ask them directly as you would amazon's digital assistance. You might say hey shack. Tell me about the weather. Hey samuel Tell me about the news today. And it works exactly the same way and they will read everything in

Dissecting the Diverse Applications of Voice and Conversational Interfaces

"Let's talk a little bit about Conversation all space whether it's voice or Chat interfaces and if can you share a little bit with us about how you view that at the at the design center there do you view conversational interfaces sort of holistically and then whether it's voice or chat than it breaks down from there or do you view voice and chat as two separate channels to question so maybe let me may become with the way that we approached it originally and then i'll try to answer the voice versus check questions so we were really excited with what The amazon alexa team ruled out early. On which was the ability to purchase and pay for anything with the card on file most likely visa card Giving rise of our company and our market share and and so we were really excited. That technology rolled out. We also heard that. The verification method which to us is a very It's the thing that we spent decades on to make sure we get right. Was this audible. Four digit pin in. We understood that was like absolutely the way to do it. That was the right solution for the right time or like well. Can we hit rate on this. A little bit and see where we can go and so we took voice as an opportunity to potentially be biometric modality and reinforce how we would verify the customer to initiate that payment transaction and ultimately we found his voice as a verification method. An-and identification method in certain respects. Just not quite there yet and it may or may not ever be there however it has a lot of applicable in other use cases and we wanted to make sure we knew as much as we needed to about the space to be able to apply it in different ways and so when it comes to chat. We're trying to label like educating helping our partners understand how chattanooga faces work utilizing natural language processing and then obviously that natural handover win. The voice voices the input method as opposed to the keyboard. And how those two play together. And i think the fundamental things that we've learned our it really just waiting for the customer to figure out and tell us what they prefer right We actually just spoke with the company couple of weeks ago where they're bringing more humans into the automated interface not less. They're actually going the other way. They're saying that there is more to augment multiple human interactions with chat whether it's voice or keyboard style interface four the data input then there's more value in bringing more humans in there is less and so our prediction was obviously in an l. Interactive Storytelling Tool: Twist - Christian Mahnke, EarReality

"Tell us about your product. The wonder for interactive storytelling to twist. I believe tell us who it's for. You know the type of clients you serve and also the problem and solve with the tow based as a tool that was made by writers for writers. It's a no coding solution with a visual interface and empowers nearly abby run from the age of thirteen to nine hundred nine to create and publish interactive stories for voice easily when we founded. We had the long-term vision to transform twist into a south publishing platform. I but when our tool was ready in two thousand eighteen we realized that we were too far ahead of the market so we simply adjusted our strategy and became a business agency. I while creating interactive stories for disney twentieth century fox audible and other great companies. We have at the same time. A hundred writers on our tool and we coach them an interactive storytelling and they provided very valuable feedback in return and while we are still doing the agency. Business and one expand our portfolio heavily especially in the english speaking markets. We also aim to open the gates of twist worldwide at the end of this year. Or maybe at the beginning in two thousand twenty two. So what makes this unique. Is that is really intuitive. And easy to use it takes us in average only an hour to show a new writer how twist works at at the same time coach him or her in how right interactivity for voice. We've done that over a hundred times and very good at that and having a tool that really focuses on the needs of writers of content creators designers that makes us unique in every way we get tons of great feedback from waiters and game writing professional telling us how much they like are a tool and help some to prototype or create produce interactive stories. They all agree that it's shields just natural to them to use twist and that it provides all the features they want the neat and nothing more than that so to create an interactive story interests. You just drop your flow chart and write down your tax simplest that afterward you can mail script up the story and the recording guidelines to your voice actor and recording studios and when they send you back all your files you can mass upload those all at once and the production part of your story is finished you can then use the testing environment twist to play quickly through this story. Check on although all your files. And if you're satisfied with that you just deploy a story with simply click on the button to amazon. Alexa and google assistant and samson bixby or you can launch your story on a website or an app. Yeah there's no need for. Coding complicated

How to Use Clubhouse with Monique Howard

"Coward. Welcome to the voice by podcast. Hi thank you brett fridge. Finding me here yeah. I'm excited have you. So i've noticed that you have been very active on clubhouse. I'm looking forward to getting your perspective on it but before we get into that. Why don't you tell the listeners. A little bit about you and your role in the voice industry great so i am the ceo and founder of smart goals. And what we do. Is we create voice apps in the tech space specifically geared toward helping the supporting kids with social emotional learning conversations skills. So we've been doing that. We actually got into it around right before the pandemic on a small team of women got together on very focused. And we're really intentional. When we create those apps because we think about things like fine motor skills. We think about things like reciprocal communication and we think about things like building vocabulary. So it really really intention. We create the apps. That's amazing it's like voice tech- for good yes. Yes yes yes. So we are really excited about it. we partner with schools as well as non profits to kind of get those Apps within the to to the kids who have been need them the most and the one thing that we find that they're fun right. They don't really know that they're learning. So i was really really fun and then it also gives something different from just looking at a screen all day of pink playing a computer game so the people that we partner with a really excited about goes apps created. Yeah what time to launch it is. Everyone is remote learning from home. Now they're looking for tools precisely like what you're offering exactly in the big thing about it. Is that his exposure for us. We understand that yes. Most people have a device on. But they're only using it the weather or directions or to order something and so this exposes the kids to something different especially for those in underserved community who may not have a device at home it gives them extra exposure to understand it. Hey this is something that i can do. Which has led us to start creating courses or classes for young kids so that not only they're exposed to it but also learn how to create apps of their own great all right so i'm really glad to have that background. I'm sure there's you've piqued the interest of a lot of listeners. Who are probably going to check out some articles which will get into it at the end. We'll give give everybody to see. Ta that they can go and check it out today. We're talking about clubhouse. I would say we're clubhouse friends. We've been at a lot of room together. We spoke together on which has been great because we didn't really have any interaction before that maybe a couple of times twitter or something like that but We hadn't had a chance to formally so this is extending it further. We're at the podcast together. I would say someone in the voice industry. Why don't you start out by telling us a little bit about when you joined and what your first experiences were on the on the network so i joined in november. Maybe kind of late november noel. Silver is actually invited me so she myself and another friend of ours. We actually met at the conference in new jersey. The first voice conference there. So that's where we met and we kept in touch on Motive exactly And so that's where we met. She invited myself. And another lady denise to the platform my initial experience was that it was a great place for really rich conversation. So i can just bounce from room to room here with people are saying and joining i likes. I really really enjoy the fact that i can either be just a listener and just soak all the information or i can actually be involved in the conversation and i think that's the point that we miss a lot in that when we're listening you we love podcast but we would love to acts that person who's leading the podcasts or the host to just ask one question so that was the big thing for me and besides not having to get on video all the time so it's always a great bonus but my first day was like a twenty four hour marathon twenty four hours twelve or twelve hour marathon just really feeling the full of a voice what clubhouse actually causes people to feel and But then i kind of sell the into. Where the niche did i wanted to actually start participating in which was tech. I'm still around businesses startups. And so those were the main room said i really gravitated to so it. Sounds like you started out mostly as a listener but you've become increasingly more active. And i think you're you're hosting rooms now. So what did you talk about what your evolution was like. Why you sort of moved to where you are today and how you're using it today. Yes so that was one of our goals would know out in these night got onto. The platform is to educate bis small businesses about voice So obviously we had to get acclimated to the environment. What was going on. But we quickly schedule rome every friday at two central to just have it introduction to 'em where we saw amazon alexa right just as most people know about that missile. We hosted those roads every friday little small sided with a small group than it grew a little bit larger. We don't have large I would say has gotten large over time. But it's not like hundreds and hundreds of people but we often get a lot of people who kinda combat time after time

Which of course is another way that you can do it so let me just touch on that a little bit for each of those. They've been natively built into spotify and to apple podcasts. And so if you're looking for a podcast that is on one of those platforms on spotify or an apple. Podcast you can literally just ask for it so for example if you want to listen to the voice canada podcast. You can simply say lexi. Play the voice in canada. Podcast on spotify. And then you can do that and we'll start playing so that is probably the easiest way to do it. Although like i said you can also use that. Any pod skill. So there you go. "Those of you that live in Calgary. I've got a little bit of news for you kind of interesting here particularly. If you are in the market for a new place to live so long Gallery. There is an area of town. I don't live in Calgary. So you calgarians can can tell me more about this but there's an area called Kensington and there's a company called so long and they are creating 172 unit 9 story project in this area. And it is being a called one of the most technologically advanced down payments that we have seen and what's very interesting. Of course relevant to us is that they're the first developer in Canada that Amazon has chosen to partner with them. And this is very very interesting because one of the features for all of the units is of course a smart home. Which offers Safety and Security along with Amazon Lexi and this can control everything in the home. It's built in music news weather Etc answering your door for parcel deliveries. Apparently, these are going to have the fastest internet connection in western Canada up to 15 times faster than found in other homes. So this is going to be pretty technologically advanced and what's interesting is that you can customize your units and you can do the whole thing online through Shopify. So we're staying home if you're in that area and you want to check it out you can always go to Seoul Calgary, s o l a c a l g a r y. And if you

Let all the different things sinking and think about how they are going to impact what we are doing so. . Usually if history has shown us anything, , it shows that Amazon is extremely busy behind the scenes and I would expect that we are going to see a whole bunch of new <hes> devices. . My sense from right is that anything that theoretically could be a hero or a wearable is where Amazon is focusing and so. . This is strictly, , this is not based on any inside information. This . is just my feeling. . I would wonder if we're going to see other types of wearables have lexi Bilton maybe earrings maybe a necklace maybe a bracelet maybe a belt, , those sorts of things that we wear on us and that will allow Lexi to be with us because he does not have a native phone Amazon doesn't make phones. . "Hey Terry here with your flash briefing for Monday. Hope you're off to a good start for your week as I promised a last week I've been diving into a little bit of the jobs that are available with Amazon particularly in Canada and there are a number of jobs particularly in Vancouver and Toronto that are currently available. And apart from yes you may be interested in applying for those jobs and by the way you can see those at Amazon dot jobs I was interested to see what kind of jobs are being posted because that may give us a little bit of a clue in terms of what features maybe seeing soon and one of the first jobs that came up on this list was. A development. Manager for Lexi Guard so you don't know guard is one of the features that is available in united. States. But it's not here in Canada. So what does that mean? Well, it does mean that Amazon obviously is trying to bring that to Canada but if they're looking to hire someone to work on it, it probably means that it's not quite ready yet for prime time here in Canada. So that's a little bit on the Lexi Guard. Some of the other jobs that I'm seeing posted include and these are all in Canada. Areas of applied scientists software development engineers, a quality assurance engineers, solutions, architects applied scientists. Language engineers a senior V voice user interface designer for Lexi shopping. So That's interesting. They WanNa Canadian to working on that lots and lots of development engineers I'm seeing. and. Finally, I'm seeing job called senior software development engineer for Lexi orchestration, and to be honest, I'm not sure what orchestration means when it comes to Levy. But in the job description, the job description, it says lexi or. Is situated at the center of all Lexi customer experiences whether they are traditional custer, customer initiated speech interactions, or the growing set of lexi initiated proactive scenarios such as routines and notifications very interesting anyway. So there's a little bit of insight into what's going on in Canada with the market. Again, if you're one of those jobs, definitely check it out, go to Amazon dot jobs and apply in. We'll get some Greek Canadians on the team. All right. Have a wonderful day talk to you soon. BRIEF CAST DOT FM..

"Holidays sees figures chaz favorite celebrities who blooms she knows hundreds of corny jokes. She was sayings, and of course, she knows that will go sports team. The goal is for Alex responses to be uniquely Canadian and so my team were charts ensure. That the customers received, the answers are looking for under the line with Alex's personality tenants and so those are. You always helpful one hundred and a painting. That's great. Yeah. No wonderful. It's really. Is just something very special about that when you to question and it has that Canadian content. It all of sudden. You have this thing that's in common. If you will with voice assistant, you have this common bond that you can share this common knowledge of the culture and society. So I mean obviously it's done very purposefully and I think it's great. Just a couple last questions you tie it up but for those of you that are listening or watching live if you do have any other questions. I'd be happy to bring them up with Selene, we just have a few minutes left here. So. Put it out there for you and I'll be keeping my eye on on the feeder for that. But. If Canadians do have feedback or they want to provide some suggestions to the Amazon Alexa team. What what would be the best way to do that resource for them? A few different ways kispest can submit feedback. On. The device voice Alex feedback. They can also use the Alexa up and snippy back through there and then finally there's also customer service, which is Julia. Feedback as well. Wonderful and then. I'll just give a shout here. We've got a couple that were live on here Dana I was asking about kind of things about again products in Canada versus the frames. I did get a set of frames, but that was tied to a US account. So that was kind of my way around that. I know some Katie have done that. So the fringe are not available in Canada yet Dana. But Finally, where can people go to learn more and stay up to date on what is happening with Amazon? If they've got other any other. Interest, in this in whether it's as a consumer level at a business level what what are ways that people can stay in touch and learn more? One great resource is the. Blog the Amazon stay one blog that has the latest date sow things about Amazon and devices La. We used it also during efforts on that front. That's a great place to start. Wonderful. Well, I think that that kind of wraps it up. We have no more common here from Janice uh-huh Janez is great to see you and she says, she loves it. It's great to be able to provide feedback to Amazon. So thank you to the Amazon team for being receptive to that. That's that's wonderful. I think that wraps it up Selena I want to thank you so very much for taking some time here on the podcast. Again, we've another comment here great to see the Canadian content and the efforts shared by. Ray. So thank you for for that as well. Wonderful. Wonderful. So again, celine, thank you for your time. I hope that we'll be able to stay in touch and maybe as. More newsbreaks about different products and services and features with Alexa in Canada. It's such a I can only imagine the technical issues that go into creating a multi lingual voice assistant I mean it must be so complex but wonderful. Wonderful. Another sort of hot topic, our topic or our. Topic of conversation. These days is indigenous peoples in Cana an issue with that, and I'm curious like how has Amazon Alexa looked? They looked into incorporating some of those. Issues and topics that are so important in the Canadian culture in our in our society. One recent example I can assure as. The? And I know that? Time here. Alexa has been able to provide some information initially, it was quite limited, but it's has become more broad overtime. "It's Terry here with your flash briefing and Sundays as I liked to answer questions from the community, and this might be a little bit of a quick one, but it's a great great a reminder for all of us. On the facebook community page, there was a question asked by Irma. Door Nick and. She had a great question. She said for some reason. LEXI has lost control the volume it used to be consistent and now basically somethings are loud, or some things are more soft. And what are your thoughts on that so p, too often will help to answer. These questions jumped in, said, try rebooting it and your router but there there can be variations in sound from different sources, and that is exactly right. Sometimes depending on how the music source has been recorded, there can be some variations in the music, so it might or the sound whatever that is flash briefings, even and so you may find that there is some variability in that. Case. There's not a whole lot. You can do about that because that's the way it was recorded. However, the reminder here is that. Yes, if Lexi's doing something really weird, you can't figure it out. Sometimes, it is a good idea to unplug it for a few seconds, and then plug it back in. Let her reboot and make sure that everything is running smoothly. It's the same thing kind of on your computer kind of. Weird and you WanNa shut down your computer and rebooted to just basically refresh everything and clear the memory same kind of deal so. Yes sounds are sometimes up and down in terms of the volume, but if you're at a loss and you really struggling, try rebooting your device, and that can send all the problem. Okay, have a wonderful Sunday I've got some big announcements coming this week. I'm really excited about it and I'll get to some of those very shortly in the next couple of days..
