"To Taiwan if China invades Ed Baxter has all the details from San Francisco edge He has Juliet thanks and so far many questions have not more than when he said it Let's go through this from the beginning This was during a news conference in Japan Let's listen to the question number one and then the Biden response number two and then analysis from Bloomberg Steve engel Are you willing to get involved militarily to defend Taiwan if it comes to that Yes You are Mister commitment we made Now that commitment he's talking about is the Taiwan relations act which essentially spells out justification for the United States to provide military support for Taiwan in the event of an attack presumably from China not necessarily troops on the ground And he did clarify he says the policy has not changed at all but he did go on to say it I will quote him The idea that it Taiwan can be taken by force is just not appropriate It will dislocate the entire region and be another action similar to what happened in Ukraine Now China's foreign ministry spokesman Wong Wayne Ben and denouncing the comments and saying the U.S. should not send the wrong message on Taiwan to avoid causing grave damage to bilateral relations And in the U.S. interesting senator Tom cotton says the Biden administration needs to clear up the Taiwan strategy ambiguity in general saying forget about what he said Let's clear it up saying with a clear pre written policy statement China's Premier Li Chang has sent a message to Australian prime minister Anthony albanese congratulating him on his win and saying China wants to uphold the principle of mutual respect and development of China Australia's strategic partnership Meanwhile Bloomberg's Paul Allen and Sidney says the new prime minister has been working the phones with UK prime minister Boris Johnson He also spoke with President Biden over the weekend made similar assurances where expected to hear him reaffirm commitment to the quad arrangement as well which is something previous labor governments have been a little bit lukewarm about And yet on the topic of climates the albanese administration and the Biden administration's policies much more closely aligned there and albanese expected to seek U.S. support for Australia hosting a UN climate summit And I am looking at a live feed now from Japan the leaders have now arrived for the quad and have begun their meeting there And so that is a Biden Modi case and albanese In San Francisco I met Baxter this is Bloomberg All right Douglas Thank you Eddie Let's get to Dan Schwartzman as we look at global sports Dan I got a question regarding cillian Mbappé Was this a snub to Real Madrid I think if you went right now to the capital of Spain and you ask that question a hundred out of a hundred people will say absolutely and they probably don't like him anymore because this was shocking and for the first time since the shocking announcement the soccer world heard yesterday killing a bop a spoke at a press conference explaining why he stubbed round Madrid and signed a new contract to remain with PSG for the next three years He says the decision was not financially motivated but Doug I'll tell you what many people including maybe myself believe that it was and it was more based on the future of the club Now in BAPE according to Madrid they felt that he had given his word that he would be leaving Paris at the end of his contract on June 30th to join the La Liga winners but that's not gonna happen although and Bobby did not commit past three years to stay in Paris Major upsets going down in the first round of the French Open four time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka falling in trade sets to American Amanda anisimova Osaka seemed to be bothered by her left Achilles which she did have taped up Meanwhile last year's winner in both singles and doubles the two seed Barbara Craig kova loses in three sets to Diane parry Had not played the three months leading into the open due to ninja right elbow Also in the women's straw top CDC looks tough She has no trouble advancing to the second round while 5th seat Annette Conti also knocked out in straight sets In the mensha topsy Novak Djokovic no problems advancing to the second round Same thing with 5th seed wrapping a Dow Lots going on in Well let's start off with the NBA Two 30 to go before halftime in Boston the Celtics dominating the heat It is 53 to 28 Miami leads that series two games to one Miami though Jimmy Butler is banged up He is playing though as we speak He does have a knee injury but Tyler hero not in the lineup as he deals with a groin injury NHL scoreboard 8 50 to go in the third period in Tampa Bay the lightning leading the Panthers won nothing Tampa Bay leads that series three games to none coming up any minute now the avalanche at the blues Colorado leads that series two games to one I'm Dan schwarzman that your Bloomberg world sports update Juliet Thanks so much Dan Coming up we are going to hear from U.S. trade representative Katherine Tai who was speaking to Bloomberg earlier after President Biden says he'll review tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on imports from China Also checking in on Asian equity market we are seeing a bit of weakness coming through today U.S. futures dropping as well Traders of course continuing to weigh these concerns about the economic slowdown as we saw tech way dragging down NASDAQ 100 futures South Korea's Cosby index.

"Global sports Dan O Killian and bupe staying at PSG It did surprise a lot of people to say the least Doug and he spoke at a press conference today The first time since he shocked the soccer world by snubbing around Madrid and signing that new three year deal to stay in Paris he says the decision was not financially motivated although many have speculated that the actual reason why says it's based on the direction of the club Now reports say Madrid felt that they had in papi's word that he would leave Paris at the end of his contract on June 30th to join the La Liga winners What a day at the French Open major upsets going down the first round four time Grand Slam winner Naomi also got falling in trade sets of American Amanda anisimova Meanwhile last year's winner both singles and doubles two C barber crud jacoba loses in three sets of Diane Perry Did not play the three months leading into the open due to ninja ride elbow Also in the women's draw 5th seat Annette come to make knock down trade sets but of course the hottest tennis player out there right now top CD has no trouble moving on to the second round Looking at the men's truck tops you know that Djokovic advances in trade sets as the 5th seed Rafa Nadal Eastern Conference Finals resuming tonight in the NBA the Boston Celtics hosting the Miami Heat down two games to one Miami though battling injuries Tyler heroes not gonna play due to groin injury Jimmy Butler though will be in the lineup NHL playoffs starting down the east two time defending Stanley Cup champion ten bay lightning their home for the Florida Panthers 5 minutes ago in the first period Tampa leaves that series three games to none look at a finish it off I'm Dan Schwartzman that your Bloomberg world sports update all All right thanks very much for that Dan We do have markets opening at the top of the hour in Tokyo Sydney and Seoul futures pointing to a mostly positive open here in Australia we're looking at upside of about a quarter of 1% We're also going to be talking a little more about the energy crisis facing the globe particularly in the face of rising temperatures there are concerns that not going to be enough energy supply to.

warriors lost in the NHL the bruins beat the capital's four three Global news 24 hours a day on air and on Bloomberg quick tank powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts more than a 120 countries Michael Barr and this is Bloomberg Naked Okay Michael thanks it's 6 19 on Wall Street live from the Bloomberg interactive broker studios This is Bloomberg daybreak We want to focus in on the pandemic now and signs that the omicron peak may have come and some parts of this country first hit by the fast spreading variant Let's bring in Andy petco should now Professor of molecular microbiology and immunology At the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg school of public health professor we're seeing the staffing shortage easing in some parts of the country particularly in the northeast after omicron first emerged about a month ago Where do you see this wave going The first thing we have to remember is oftentimes severe disease those hospitalizations and deaths lag behind the case numbers by anywhere from one to two weeks So we still want to keep our guard up and make sure that we're monitoring those severe cases But certainly good news right now to see the case numbers are dropping down The real question that we have is are they going to drop down and continue to drop down or are they going to plateau at a higher level maybe something like we saw with the delta variant That's the unknown right now that we're monitoring You say we got to keep our guard up We've been keeping our guard up as you know for nearly two years now and there's been a pretty uneven response when it comes to weather to keep certain restrictions in place vaccine mandates to get into businesses a lot of cities and states are making the decision on their own How do we keep our guard up when there has been this kind of uneven response One of the things is to always think about your personal situation and making sure that you're doing everything that you can to minimize the risk of infection and if you minimize risk growth infection you also minimize the risk in which you're transmitting and therefore you can make an impact on that on the overall disease progression in the population So part of it does come down to individuals making sure that they follow the right guidelines completely understand that this has been going on for a really long period of time I think if there is a silver lining the large number of cases that we're seeing with omicron is probably going to boost this population immunity to a level where we will probably see reduced ability of future variants to spread significantly in the population I hate to predict things because as viruses always thrown us a curveball whenever we start to think we're feeling comfortable but this really does look like it could be a turning point in this pandemic with respect to our ability to deal with this virus That kind of prediction I think a lot of us are hoping will pan out We're seeing testing rollouts masking rollouts the Biden administration's dipping into the strategic national reserve to make more N95 masks available What kind of impact could that have Should it have come sooner Yes I think it should have come sooner We had signs very early on that was more transmissible than other variants Our stockpiles of the higher quality masks these KN 95s These N95 masks were around and probably should have been distributed faster The flip side is these masks are not as comfortable as a facial covering to wear And so they bring other problems in terms of people maybe not being compliant in terms of keeping the masks on for all our time So as with most public health things it's a balance between doing what we can do to minimize the spread of this virus but also realizing that they are things that will impact our day in day out behaviors In our last minute here I hope it's not too much of a curveball but I've got to get your reaction to this hamster kill that's going on in Hong Kong It's gotten a lot of attention What impact could that have Is that the right track to take when it comes to dealing with COVID Well we know that there are a number of animal species that can host that are infected with COVID-19 We certainly know that here in the U.S. the wild deer population is one that has shown signs of getting infected with SARS CoV-2 and continuing to hold that population In Hong Kong there's a strong intervention procedure that utilizes this culling of animals when they pose a potential risk for passing pathogens to humans that isn't really present in other places It's a historical thing that goes back to some avian flu So it's certainly something to pay attention to but the risk of this to the human population is still not very clear and may in fact be minimal All right Well thanks as always for your insights Really appreciate it Andy pecos is Professor of molecular microbiology and immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg school of public health supported by Michael Bloomberg he's the founder and majority owner of the parent company of Bloomberg radio That's Bloomberg LP Right now S&P futures are down 22 points Dow futures firmly in the red now down 75
