What to expect from Amazon's 2020 Alexa bonanza

"Amazon's annual Alexa launch event is coming up on Thursday. And if it's anything like past years, it's going to be a busy day. I'm Ben Fox Ruben, and this is your daily charge. Joining me today is David priests, who covers all things Alexa here at CNN, Aman how's it? GOIN'. Doing. All right. How are you? Doing. Okay. So what are you really hoping to see tomorrow? What's what's your expectation from? Let's let's start with the echo up. Yes, sure. So, last year I mean this is an interesting year because last year you had sort of a shotgun blast of Alexa devices that we were kind of expecting to see you know we we thought we saw the echo show five come out during the summer we knew that they were going to be some speakers and displays that we're going to be rounding out their product lines. This year is not really the same. We already have you know multiple generations of displays and speakers. We already have the kind of baby bear Mama, bear, Papa Bear version of the display and the speaker. So everyone unconfined that just right device for them. So you know as far as displays speakers go don't think that we're going to see any huge revamps or huge surprises in terms of those devices what what we might see is. you know some added Polish or added features like we got with the echo dot with Kwok last year where they took an existing device and kind of added a convenient feature on top of it. Yeah one of the one of the few that they didn't update last year if I remember correctly was the echo spot, which is which is looking a little stale at this point. The thing is is that you could argue that the echo show the newer echo shows kind of replaced at. the other thing that you didn't mention where some of the mobile elements for cow so that Includes the. Auto. Hardware that Gizmo that you put in your car in addition to some of the weirdoes stuff like the glasses and earn ring like an actual ring you put on your finger and usually they they tend to have these types of oddball items whether it's a wall clock or microwave or ring so I would also expect to see some of those. Just they really loved like throwing Spaghetti on the wall I would I would share I are and one thing that's always interesting about them to. As you know, Amazon is really willing to you both abandoned device that's just not working. You know I remember testing out the original tap, which was you know Kinda got left behind. And that very well could happen with the echo loop or something like that from last year. That's the ring. Yeah. But also if if there's a product that they sort of throw out there and does stick to the wall, they're very willing to kind of lean into that and so if they're you know if they think the frames are doing really well, we could see some expansion of those products you know. So they're not just sort of limited release it sort of expands and gets a little bit more wide reach in their release or even new versions of them. Yeah. I'm kind of excited to see what they do. It's always it's always exciting and there's some surprises there. So do you think that the I've written versions of the story? In various times over the years do you think the lineup has gotten way too confusing like you talked about the tap, they actually discontinued the tap but like now they have like a very long list of echo items and some of them are really niche like the echo glow which I think is like a night light. So. So is it time for them to like shrink it down and kind of focus or you know they're just to keep doing what they've been doing, which is you know, let's throw out as many products as we can think off so. You know I think that there definitely is reason for them to focus their core lineup and I think they've done that with speakers and devices. And in a couple of other categories this while the. Euro. Stuff like that. So they have routers and they have the ring doorbells. So they have those core devices with with each of those properties and they have slightly different branding for some of them. But those those core lineups don't really get damaged or you know muddled by the addition of a bunch of extra things that they're trying out like echo auto and the frames and. you know the glow and things like that. So I think it's I. think that they have actually done a pretty good job of distinguishing between their core lineup devices that they're definitely going to be trying to get everybody to get during the holiday season and the ones that they're just sort of putting out there to see if there's interest if they want to expand it if people would buy if they put it out there.

"On any because like navigating your way through your business, Johnny like without the guidance without advise can be really tough but. Lonely because you're GONNA get caught up in your own head and you're not actually moving on your own. Terms, I guess you would say, sometimes ear, the biggest driving forces don't come from the greatest. and. That could be something a huge catalyst actually propel you forward and entrepreneurship entrepeneurship for me. Isn't the yachts and Champagne and Nice watches a nice clothes as not entrepreneurship entrepreneurship for a m sitting in my boxers, a wife beater going how the hell can I get my business to this level? That's what it's about and it's the grind people sometimes and they asked me questions and I'm going on interviews now and in different podcasts in two major influences in the industry and they're really curious about my thought process and what's actually brought me here my story they ask because like how would you label yourself I? Really don't want to label myself just as an entrepreneur or maybe even a sales salesperson come from sales. I'm just a hustler to just happened to be good at sales. Just a natural ward Hustle Hustle, but a lot of people use that word in so many different types of ways, but I use it in a good way of actually loving the grind I loved the grind. Enough Muscle coach I think is amazing on people should be proud of it because it's taking you from A to B o beat e like wherever you want to go like not in enough grind and you not hustling to take yourself to that that. Next that, then you're not progressing and you're not evolving as an entrepreneur. You're just staying stockman right I mean a lot of aunt yours I meet people and they go. Well, how did you get from a? You know seven to an eight figure in that you know type your that quickly Mike I mean that quickly I mean look at the overnight success. Bro, like you gotTa look at the the Grind I. There's there's some times right thought. I was GONNA lose it all and there's times where I feel like. Really doing really well, and I've gotten out that a murky water out there now blue ocean and enough people read books out there without blue. Ocean. Strategy is a really good book to read. But when you're getting out there ablution you're. Now. You have a target on your back. After you now you're actually what they're setting out for your your the standard while I gotta keep raising that standard. So that occasion becoming one percent better every day because every day I'm getting progressively getting better one percent might not be huge for a lot of people. But time they're chasing the old meets Aman and I know you probably feel that way. I mean do you have a lot of people that guess you'd say as competition looking at you as competition are looking at you.

Embrace Your Inner Witch

"So, Juliet, as it's a pleasure to have you on the podcast today. It's an honor to be here on your podcast. Super excited. Yeah. I'm really excited to to talk about your work and especially how meditation and mind set an intention ties into effective witchcraft I'm especially interested in that on this on this podcast it is a meditation podcast, but we we've you're out into other realms as well. Amazing and it is such a huge key in manifesting and weaving magic a Lotta people dismiss that part and wonder why what they want or the intentions they're setting aren't coming. True. So it's really important to of talk on this. Excellent. Excellent will we'll get into that for sure. So I want to start out with So I read both of your books, the witchery embraced the which within and the second book which is coming out in September plant witchery discover the sacred language wisdom and magic of two hundred plans are. In those in those books you you spent a fair bit of time actually in the beginning. Explain. What kept isn't Happiness free ourselves of sort of. That are preps not so helpful. So as you as you wrote, it's not about just waving a magic wand as in Harry Potter and we know that they're also are negative connotations even to the word witch, right so right at the start here, I thought it would be helpful. To ask you to to define or just speak briefly about a few terms that we're going to use straightaway. So we all have ground in in what witchcraft is. So can you tell me what you mean by which by spells? Potions and finally magic. So we might spend a little bit of time on this but these these terms I think are important that we're on the same page. Well. The importance of the word, which is that it's not what you think. It's not boxed into one thing on indigenous, which so I come from ancestors who were medicine people aman healers, and for us in our language Spanish it's Brouhaha it's different from English witch but through the generations colonization, the word which has become something now is evil or frowned upon or any woman or man who was able to. Connect with the Earth Spirit great spirit for that matter and divinity and manifesto beautiful life or manifesting into their into their world, and they were able to connect with other people and held a lot of wisdom people were scared of that in that was during all that colonization since our ancestors and people have had a bad taste in their mouth about who are on what they do when in fact. Is Brew has hose. Their medicine. People there. The light keeper's they're the ones who are truly connected to this earth into spirit and who want the best for all of us who want to manifest beautiful is enlightened love and he'll all of those shadows that we have within us in that inner child. So commercial things like movies especially, those are the things that really touched on more of a dark side of what magic or witches can be, and the truth is there is no light without darkness and we do acknowledged that there is a beautiful priority in there's a beautiful balance between light and darkness. Or light and shadow that make up an embody who we are as human beings on this earth and darkness is necessarily it's not necessarily a bad thing. It's where we keep our secret is where we keep our pain. It's where we keep our experiences that we learned from and are able to open up and shine that light that we have from divinity again, movies. Lots of religions and a lot of culture is a frown upon witches because they just don't understand that connection we have with spirit and within ourselves

"This is average. This is not every man, but when a man retires, he has one year before his first heart attack. Now before they had stints Aman, had three years before he died, and that was this statistic, because men need work, and yet we need balance, work and home, balanced home at both those things together, so this is all part of gender intelligence, and as the workplace begins to appreciate. Hey, if we can create a work, environment is nurturing to the well being and happiness and fulfilment of our workers, they will be more productive, and that has not been in Men's vision. Their thing is get. Get the job done reward reward, the one who sacrifices the most gets the biggest reward who produces the biggest result. If you stay over time, see they don't require you to work overtime, but if you stay over time, then you get more clients and they see you working harder. You get more results. You get the promotions. That's how you get promotion, so they're not saying you have to work overtime, but that's the message you get the paradigm shift. Yeah, that's the heavy male and. Teamwork is quality of life. It's inclusion diversity. These are all female values coming into the workplace, so we need to just become more conscious of them, and then suddenly it happens faster. It's like wake up to what's happening I could happen and I love Dali Llama says about the Western women changing the word Ali. Yeah. So you know, and what does he say, well, he he says that the Western women are changing the way the business world is happening so clearly one of the things is Warren Buffett. More profit to the men in the room then the. Warren Buffett. Quote the I two things I. Don't know I'm about to quote it, but go ahead. I use in my show is unconditional. Love? That's the I want. That, too, but recently quote an article. What he said is that there's a bright future for America because up to now we've been using fifty percent of our potential. The male way of doing things with more women in the workplace. We have another fifty percent potential. Okay, we can begin to experience a hundred percent potential as men and women are working together, and that's what we can look forward to. As we grow in a positive intelligence that appreciates those values. Yes, amen, definitely he also says in having no doubt..

Aaron Brooks Discuss Working as a Devops

"All right so tell us who you are and what you do Yeah my name is Ann Brooks. I'm devops engineer. Aman technically actually at a software company In in Baltimore fearless solutions. Actually black owned software company owned by a guy named delight zero And another guy who's partner in it I was in his John Foster But Yeah I saw. That's why engineer on my help. Bridge the gap between development operations. But I'm also pretty passionate about technical education so I also have started a series called a mastermind academy where I hopefully have created a scalable platform to be able to teach these topics in a way that will actually help people get jobs in the future. Dope I really WANNA go more. It's a masterminding academy and Definitely WanNa talk about devops stuff. But let's let's start with fearless because you already said something that is blowing my mind a little bit which is black on software company. Like oh absolutely what. I checked out the website before we started recording and I was telling you before like the whole software with a sole really struck struck me as like wow like even just looking at pictures of the company culture and how everything works out. It's really unlike anything that I've seen before and I've been around in tech for a minute. How did you you like hook up with feelings? How did you get started there? A great question. So you're you're definitely not wrong but So I I I grew up in county which is not that far from his is closer to DC ABC. Not that far from Baltimore. But I went to school in Baltimore College of Baltimore and after school I was working. I ended up a lot of jobs are in the DC area northern Virginia area. So I was Kinda working down there living in Baltimore and I moved down to the DC area. And then I was looking around for different things and my wife actually my wife in Baltimore and she was working on the move back to Baltimore again. So a lot of moving back and forth but As I was moving back to Baltimore decided I didn't want to make this long commute anymore. I started looking for jobs and I went on Google typed in tech companies in Baltimore and fearless popped up and actually went on the website and I saw someone that I knew there. There's a a woman named Kiera that I'm that I knew you through a mutual friend and I saw on the website and I reached out and ask questions that she had nothing but positive things to say so I applied things went well. They actually didn't get the contract that I I was supposed to be joining. Forces actually took a job in DC for the time being and then they reached back out to like hey still interested. We'd love to have you and it sounds like a great company so I took the leap and I've been there for almost three years. Now wow so really you kind of almost lucked up on it. You found it through Google search. Yup absolutely what is a regular day like for you in devops like I'm sure for people that are listening might have an idea but can you also explain just like what what is devops and why is it important. Yes so devops really is is different everywhere you go and everyone will have a different answer for but that would is supposed to be a man supposed to be bridging the gap between development lemon operations in breaking down those silos usually developers right. They're code and they toss it basically over this proverbial wall over to ops of the people who are designed were there to put this stuff out in the systems and keep running if their issues ops people toss it back and they don't really know how to code runs and things like that. It's not really a job title as it's not what you we do. More of a philosophy about how you approach a software development and solving problems. And it's really just people who are designed to create these pipelines create tools services to help developers develop as fast as they a need to assess autopsies. A normal day for me really is I do have to manage that. There's usually a pretty big focus on infrastructure management. So I do a lot of cloud computing. And I'm responsible for you know writing and codifying templates To basically deploy Amazon Masan webs services resources. So now you don't need to you no longer need to buy servers and things like that you can basically write these files That kind of describe the state of the infrastructure that you want and ship it off to Amazon and Amazon will go ahead and provision these resources for you which makes it a pretty cool. It's a lot of automation and they're making sure these processes and things that you usually do manually are done in automated fashion done in a way that no one has to kind of be hands on which should save a lot of time on really help developers move a lot faster stor. Some of sounds like it's a lot of almost behind the scenes work making sure that all the years returning and everything is running smoothly. Yeah absolutely definitely more. We're back in focused traditionally back in focused. Okay do you lead a team or are you just kind of individual contributor. I do so I I I I am the team lead eight for I'm actually work on the SBA DOT GOV projects. Let's the small business administration we manage the basically the digital footprint for the small business administration. You know we are revitalizing their tooling their website. All they're all the various backings. We have to help support small businesses. But I am not there so I ah do do more than just absolutely actually. Don't do much devops your day to day right now because I do manage the application team And I'm helping architect out the application location. There make decisions in helps setting the path for. We're going to do there okay. What does that kind of day to day? Look like is it just mostly meetings and you're not kind of in the thick of it more meetings. And before I I am very much dylan to think of it but there is definitely more meetings than before a lot of meetings that I did not expect Day to day. I'm usually you come in. We'll do our standard. We'll talk about other things that we did what we have coming up tomorrow you know. We were an agile shop. We practice Agile scrum. We do that and then it's usually a you know have some spring tasks I might have development tickets. I may be working on a we have a react a javascript node. React Front End. Maybe doing some some things with that or I may be showing up some security concerns and and updating packages and things like that or adding new architecture to the site new physical Amazon architecture to the site. Hi I'm on a daily basis but it is a lot of beatings. It's a lot of helping to clear. blockers for for developers developers run into problems helping them work through those problems and making sure for that. They have kind of the runway to be able to complete the things that they need to complete But yeah a lot more administrative things than I am used to So for people all that are listening you kind of detailed what devops is so. I think I can kind of get a sense of what the differences between software development and just doing devops or something like But you also work with designers as well is that right absolutely all of our scrum teams have general above developers devops scrum master astor designers in a Qa test engineers. What do you think designers need to know about the software development process because like you're mentioning? Agile scrum. I don't know what those things mean. I know if I talked of disasters. They'll be like what what does that. Yeah Yeah Yeah So. I've actually been fortunate to the team that we actually work with his actually pretty small our entire team is about ten people also get to work pretty closely together and this is the actually this. This position has been the first time I've ever been truly a part of the entire hire process of the software development life cycle and so what I would say developers would kind of a benefit from knowing about devops is one what would art. What the devops ethos is is again really being able to enable development so that both designers and devops engineers really have the same goal and that is too great the best product for the user our users users are the same so you know the end user was aimed but for devops the developers also our user that that's kind of our main stakeholder and when we are when I just WanNa designers are designing Having being able to be a part of that design process. I've been a part of design sprints and all kinds of design jams and things like that to be able to to actively actively run through and analyze and figure out what a proper or federal solution will be for someone design wise. That part is really important because the conversation that happens between the technical feasability of a design came really impact. How the devops engineers architect the system An implement the system so that this can be done quickly so you know if you have the opportunity to work hand in hand with your developer devops engineers can make the product much better than than you think it is and you can actually get it a lot. Astor interesting. No that's good to know because I used to. This was got maybe about over ten years ago but back when I used to work at Web. MD They really had like development and design in these two silos so like when you mentioned that wall earlier like it's a metaphorical wall. But you know like throwing doing the project kind of back and forth over it to make sure that both sides kind of have everything in Sync I just know when I was working at Web. MD and we had that process it. It was so difficult because we would get the the we would do designs or whatever then we toss it over and then the development of just toss it right back like Oh yeah. We can't Geico that you can't do that. And it's like there would be a lot of this caused a bottleneck to try to get things done. Yes it's really tough also to be able to know unless you're having that constant communication is hard to know like we aren't designers and designers. Aren't you know web developers or or or back in Asia. Nears I usually so it's tough to know the full scope of what is feasible. What can be done in the proper amount of time so like having that conversation can really help you know like? Hey maybe we maybe. The the stakeholder just needs like feedback but we just need somewhere on the page to get feedback and the designers may say super easy. We'll just throw this box over here. But because of the way that they'd be pages as I because of the components we have built. Maybe that's another ten hours of work. Where if maybe we just had a conversation maybe we could have thrown it into a component that we that already existed and we can throw a little Lincoln there on which which may be equally as effective solution? But until you have that conversation. You'll really no. Yeah so how long have you been at fearless now. I'm coming up on October. Seventeenth will be my three year anniversary. And I've never been anywhere for three years the traditional I guess millennial job hopper. I've had a lot of jobs in the past seven or eight years and usually I usually get out of there in a year year and a half times house man and this is the first time I've been

Human Lab Rats: Science's Rotten Underbelly

"Which taking you back to a time where a group of scientists had free rein to do whatever they wanted to their human Guinea pigs. It was basically the wild wild west of science an out of this time, we got new medicine made scientific progress but things spiraled out of control when research is took it too far. With starting out story with a man who stumbled into this world decades ago. So let me get just coffee, and then we can create his name is Sigmund Weizman or seek. He's a jolly guy loves to laugh, and as we sat down for coffee Zeke told me about growing up in Philadelphia fifties and sixties he's family was working class. No one had been to college. But see be dreams. He'd always wanted to be a duck down. So I finished college, and I was going to start medical school fast, though, he needed a summer job. And I thought well, it'd be interesting to do something that might have some relationship with what I was going to do in the future. And I thought well, maybe there's some research or medical research or either any kind of research, and it's this research that would plunge him into the center of what would become a national scandal. I didn't know I was. Too stupid to to be honest to the think anything more about the full any of that though. Sieg is just an eagle college grad looking for that summa gig. So he opens up the phone book. Yeah. I so I thought well, I'll look up research laboratories in the yellow pages. This is how naive I was. He's going alphabet cly and once he gets to the lettuce. See he sees a listing in small print clover laboratories, it was only a phone number and an address didn't have anything except a listing. Clova libra trees sounded medicine to Sieg. So he dials the number AMAN picks up and seek tells him I've just finished college. I'm going to medical school. And I'm looking for job. He said, you're exactly what we need this summer. Why don't you come to this address tomorrow morning and on meet with? You and you can decide if you'd like to do this this job. The next day said gets into his car and heads to the address he was given. He's driving through pretty residential pot of Philly Yod's, brick houses, and all of a sudden, I see these huge big granite buildings. Scary scary looking Victorian type buildings. I looked at the address where I was driving. I said my God. It's jail prisons too big house, whatever you wanna call them. Did you know you're going to be working at a jail? I had no idea. I thought I was going to be working in a laboratory. You know, benches pouring chemicals and spinning centrifuges. And that was the thing. I was completely flummoxed. What did I get myself into? What did he get himself into? Seek it was about to enter a world where scientists were experimenting on prisoners. And this wasn't just in bad apples a few rotten scientists. Now, what felt like a weed summit job was actually part of an industry where the US government and beak pharma, which testing new drugs imprisons. So on today's show how did this happen and how did people like seek get sucked in?
