"Was and remains an absolute tragedy for those who have not heard there was a sweet 16 party Saturday night, a young bunch of young kids celebrating and four people were killed, about 30 people, injured, one of the one of the people that lost their lives was a young high school star who had signed a scholarship to go play at Jacksonville state. And that's right. Every week we see something like this, but every day that a lot of folks in Alabama know well and it's just literally right off the road and I was extremely heartbroken as many of you were to see that news. Yes, sir. Ironically, Harvey updike when he called you years ago, he was Alvin Davis. Yeah, you know, I couldn't help even though I didn't want to. I couldn't help but think about that over the weekend that when he called in, he lived over there in that area, which is a beautiful area. It's like your idyllic small town in America, Paul. Yeah, no it is. And that's all I had to ask my quest for. Kevin, thank you. I'm glad you mentioned it. And I'll spare all of you the obvious violence that occurs across the country. You don't need a Sherman for me, but the most important thing is hoping that the people that are suffering in that community that they can find some way to get back. And the morning for the loss to the lost lives is just untold the untold tragedy is beyond any of our imagination. Thanks for the call. Have a really do appreciate it. Eric is up next. Hello, Eric. Hey, how are you? We're doing well. Thank you for calling. You welcome. I enjoy your show, listen to you every day. Well, thank you for saying that. You're welcome. I got a quick question. I just want to get your opinion. What do you think, how do you think Alabama is going to do this year football? You know, I'm not sure. Because I don't have a good handle on the quarterback situation. And that was the one thing that I kept saying for Alabama to be in the national championship picture. They needed quality play from quarterback. I don't know who the quarterback is going to be, do you? I'd love to have Simpson. Well, you know what? Early on, I thought he and my basis are nothing more than a reputation and having seen, but I'm not sure that's happening. We had a couple of calls earlier and that would be a big topic all week, but that remains up in the air. Yes, sir. Thank you so much. Well, thank you. We'll talk obviously a lot about Alabama later. Let's check in with Rick next. Hey, Rick. Hey Paul, how are you, sir? We're doing well. Thank you. So one day, one to hit up on about three calls from last week, but first, do you ever get boom howler from King of the Hill flashbacks when you listen to Jimbo? I do. But I don't know. I mean, you have to know Jimbo and I mean, he talks a mile a minute, but that's just who he is. Yeah. So hey, first call, I'm going to combine two into one, but I think that Jeff from Columbus, Ohio is kind of like the little blue pill for Jim. It sure seems to get him excited whenever Jeff calls these. And then I'm not laughing at anyone other than the obvious. And Dan, I thought squirrel had the call of the year until Larry and the only thing that was the only thing that was bad was that you weren't on TV and we didn't get to see your face during Larry's call. Yeah, we'll try to reprise that for those. I think we have that somewhere a couple of you, I think we moved on Friday afternoon for some of you. As we're moving on right now to the halfway mark of our program, we thank you for being here. We're not done yet. Don't you dare? Well, if you want to go ahead and do it.

"The best outside chance of lightning and being able if you got shirts underground to win two games of series. You got a chance to win it all. And they have the potential to do that. They haven't pitched the full season. They've got another hundred innings in them, and I think the injuries early on puts them out of real strength heading into the postseason. Are we past our hatred or should we be past our hatred for the Astros? We should be past it because a lot of those players no longer are there. But they are overlooked. It's a very talented team. I think they're the best probably in the American League. Although my sleeper is the Blue Jays. Oh, people are overlooking the Jays. Got a lot of young talent there. Young talent. They got an asim manoa. Burials can be there. I think they got the staff that can do it the bullpens there. And then the outside probably the best pitching might be the Mariners. They probably are the best pitching. I don't think you're a Mariners. Your Mariners. But I think the lineup is strong enough. No. Altuve going to be a first battle Hall of Famer? He should be, but he might get the Ravi Alomar treatment. For a lot of guys held Robbie back for a year because he spit on the umpire and had that controversy with the, what does garbage can get? I guess with my colleagues. They might punish Altuve for that, but he's a tremendous talent, I think he's the first battle Hall of Famer. Yeah, I wondered about that of how long do you punish somebody for something like that? And the crazy thing about Altuve and it's been backed up by so many people, he never wanted signs. He didn't want people to tell him what was coming or nothing. And I played with guys like that. You know, Alvin Davis never wanted to pitch. Tony Gwynn never wanted to know. You know, I wanted to know. Let me know. So you didn't know you had guys who would signal if they were on second base. They would let you know. I used to do that quite a bit. You know, Ken Phelps was like, I'll take two strikes for you to get the second. Still the base and let me know. And yeah, I had one time, Johnny Moses gave me the wrong sign. I thought it was gonna be a breaking ball and it was a fastball. I was hit me. And after that, I was like, I don't want anymore. Okay, how would you signal me if I'm at the plate? And it's going to be a breaking ball. Well, there's a couple of different ways. One, I would go to my knees, like if I stand up right now.

In August, they finally reached a resolution and they came back with an All Star game. That's how they resumed play in Cleveland, and I remember being just Pumped beyond belief that vital blue of the Giants got the win in relief. He got the wig. Yeah, that's awesome. That's awesome. Nationally, took the lead on vital blue got the win. How many times how many times Vita was an all start? At least three? I can look at and I'm going to say more than that. I'm watching it on TV, and I'm going. How am I? How am I not? You know what I mean? Like that's Canada was like, really. You're gonna pay mound, but all sudden, here comes to light. "But after that, you know he's got to be on the team. It winds up in such a gray area that I would prepare based on it being lengthy. That's I mean, we said that on Monday Quite a fall from grace from Adam Eaton, who is currently in limbo and unemployed. The White Sox don't want him anymore. Let me ask you about fill in White Sox players. Brian Goodwin, Gavin Sheets, Adam Angle Who's hitting He is hitting. He shouldn't be at this level, You know, to this degree. Um, Jake Burger. Maybe if he sticks around, um, any of these White Sox interesting to you in a deeper league? I did put a bid on Gavin Sheets was moderately impressed by his first week plus of major league action. I don't think there is some, you know any great things ahead, but he's getting pretty decent lineup opportunities. They're putting him second in the order on occasion. I I'm the guy who always goes and gets layering. Garcia. My ale. Only leagues is my last guy. Just cause the multi flexibility the fact that he could steal a base here there if he wants to beyond that, No, I I'm surprised that the white sex are okay with leaving this many open spots, aren't you? I get it with eaten. It's just It's odd, considering the lack of depth in that outfield. How serious are you taking any Lloyd Hymen is returning soon and producing at a level commensurate with what we expected. He starts a rehab assignment tomorrow. Tomorrow. Yeah. So he can be back this month. Yep. And I think he I'll put August 1st as the target date for fantasy expectations. I think it's going to take him a little time in major league games to get back to full speed. The hope here is that he's the fantasy monster for your head to head playoffs. I think there's a very real possibility that happens. I have gone completely the other direction from my plan and labor where you can cash in the player for for Fab money. I'm going to keep him around. I do think he can contribute down the stretch for you. Don't you think he stopped at least the capability of the top 20 outfield. It all seems very positive on alloy him. And as and now I think that people that dumped him in April are going to regret it and let me quickly ask because it affects one of my teams. The Atlanta left fielder who was on the deal with the finger and then did something he shouldn't have. Would you cash him in right now? I have him Atlanta labor at like 25 bucks, But I'm going to keep him I think And maybe he'll produce in September, But again, he he could be suspended. So I don't I'd have to ask you whether you really have that option. He has to be 60 Day. D LD or l? I think he is. I don't think he's 60 Day, I'll I think he's restricted less than if he is you can't do it. All right. So would you drop them in an ESPN standard, then? Right? This goes to so for tell Wars you can. I believe if the players on the injured list or on the sidelines for an extended period cut the player and get fat? I would, yes. That's another case of gray area. I lean towards it being lengthier because we just don't know these things, and they have not historically been getting settled very quickly. There's no reason that that MLB should raise through it. I would catchment. Yeah. All right, moving on. Now. Let's talk about hitters of the hitters of the first half was on Monday's show, or Tony and Vlad picture of the first half. He's putting up historic numbers. I wouldn't fight you on that I will pick Kevin Gausman just based on you know, and you've said this many times. It's the value relative to cost. On Draft day. It was a large divide between these two players. That's the only reason I personally pick Gausman, but I think it's clearly one of those, too, By the way. Zack Wheeler for a very big year exact. Wheeler has had an exceptional year. They don't think he's getting enough. Kudos for well last night might have cost him a start in the All Star game. So the Graham is not going to go to Denver for the All Star game. He wants to, and and he he should. He should be focusing on the Mets. Frankly, maybe Taiwan Walker will be the replacement. I just have a tough time going against the ground for this, even though he was a first round pick and arguably the first picture taken at the moment, every draft do you agree with that? He's putting up historic numbers. I wouldn't fight. Beyond that. I will pick Kevin Gausman just based on you know, and you've said this many times. He wants to, and and he he shouldn't. He should be focusing on the Mets, frankly. Maybe Taiwan. Walker will be the replacement. And then Wheeler started last night at Wrigley Field and his defense again, let them down and his manager, probably so, but we did have a great first half of the season, and I like to see him in the in the Austro game. When I was growing up. I used to love the ulcer game because I would see my player remember we couldn't watch every game. Okay, The only the only chance we have is like Monday night baseball on ABC, TBS of the Atlanta team. And then I would watch the Phillies W G. N you could get the Cubs get the Cubs. But, you know, like in the office like it was cool, like I would watch Schmitty every day and Carlton, But in the All Star game I could see Oh, that's a guy I've never seen before. You know, there's Alvin Davis or, you know, just an example. Like Or, like Bob Horner, you know, like he didn't get to see everybody And you never got to see like you were nailed guys. The Yankee I was in. No, I didn't get to see American League players. You know, I like watching back Then in the eighties who I love the Ulster Game just to watch Tim Raines play. Yeah. Yeah, because you didn't get to see the Montreal players as the New York Yankees fan. It just wasn't going to happen. The only time is if you watch some of those Mets games when they came to town. I didn't even know where Seattle was growing up, and then, like they have a baseball team and Toronto has a baseball team and I'm like, Oh, I want to see their players and then I don't remember how I was saying Bruce barked in an all Star game, But maybe he was there. You know that that helped build your fan ship now Seattle being your new team, right? Well that end and baseball cards. I mean baseball cards was the other way. It was like seeing like Mariner. But then you know, like here comes Bruce Box. He's an All star at 79 or whatever. And then that was the game the day Parker throw are wasting time. That was the name of the kingdom. I have to give you the random question, though Oldest Stick of Topps baseball game you've eaten I mean, I've never had one. You've never eaten any of the comment of the packs. Really? I've never actually chewed a piece of gum in my life. Wow. Oh, I see. I haven't in a long time I gave up come well over that, probably two decades ago, but very different. Never had come that I've never had come out of the pack never had gum in any form. I've never had coffee in any form. I've never had coffee so that that doesn't strike me as the weirdest of things, but The guy, aren't you? I I enjoyed I've had gone. I don't do it regularly. I don't had. Yeah. Never had coffee. I've had baseball cards ruined by a piece of gum. Oh, that the last. That's why they took it out. I hate that. I wish they would put it back in. That was part of the fun of the packs. Really lightweight. Um, all this government I not Not old. Good friend of mine. We were opening these up about a year ago. 1988 tops and he ate the gun, and I warned him not to in advance. He older than I am. Yeah, That's a problem. That seems so advised. 32. It was no. It's 31 year old gum. He ate it, he said. It was Dreadful. It was dreadful and idiot. Shocking. Alright, that's I looked down History Lane here for us and more of Eric's weirdness..

"I'm going to keep him around by do think he can contribute down the stretch free. I don't you think he got at least the capability of top twenty out all seems very positive on illinois him in as now. I think that people that dumped him in april. We're going to regret it and let me quickly ask because it affects one of my teams the atlanta leftfielder who is on the deal with the finger and ended something he shouldn't have. Would you cash him in right now. I have him in leno. Labor at like twenty five bucks. But i'm gonna keep him. I think and and maybe he'll produce september but again he he could be suspended so i have to ask you whether you you really have that option. He has to be sixty day detailed. Or l i think he is. I don't think he's sixty day all. I think he's restricted list than if he is. You can't do it or would you drop them in an espn standard. Then right. this goes to so for wars you can. I believe if the players on the injured list or on the sidelines for an extended period. Cut the player and get fab. I would yes. That's another case of gray area. I lean towards it being lengthier because we just don't know these things and they have not historically been getting settled very quickly. There's no reason that that. mlb should race through it. i would cashman. Yeah all right moving on now. Let's talk about hitters of the per- hitters of the first half was on monday. Show otani in vlad pitcher the first half you know jacob degrom is number one guy for points leagues and on the player reiter. Kevin gaza was like fifteen th round pick. Freddie peralta up there on chris bassett's having a great season. I just have a tough time going against the ground for this. Even though he was a first round pick an arguably the first pitcher taken in a moment every draft. You agree with that. He's putting up historic numbers. I wouldn't fight you on that. I will pick kevin guzman just based on you know. And you've said this many times it's the value relative to cost on draft day. It was a large divide between these two players. That's the only reason. I personally pick osmond. But i think it's clearly one of those too by the way could us zack. Wheeler for a very big year. Zack wheeler has had an exceptional year. That i don't think he's getting enough kudos for well last night might have cost them a start in the all star game so degrom is not going to go to denver for the all star game. He wants to and he he should he should be focusing on the mets. Frankly maybe taiwan walker will be the replacement and then wheeler started last night at wrigley field and his defense again. Let them down And his manager probably so but we'll have a great first half of the season. And i like to see him in the all star game. When i was growing up. I used to love the also game because i would see my player and we could watch every gate okay. The only chance we have was like monday night baseball. Abc tbs of the atlanta team. And then i would watch the phillys. Wgn you could get the cubs cubs but you know like in the like it was cool. I would watch schmid e every day. Carlton but in the all star game i could see. Oh that's a guy. I've never seen before you know. There's alvin davis just an example. Like or like bob horner. You know like he didn't get to see everybody and you never got to see like you were nail guys yankee i was. I didn't get to see american league players like marching back. Then i love the all star game just to watch tim raines play. Yeah because you didn't get to see the montreal players new york yankees fan. That just wasn't going to happen the only time if you watch some of those mets games when they came to town i didn't even know where seattle was growing up and then like they have a full team. Toronto has a baseball team. And i'm like oh. I wanna see their players and i don't remember how was seeing bruce bach the all star game but maybe he was there to help build your ship now. Seattle being your new team right well. That and and baseball cards baseball cards was the other way it was like seeing like mariner. But then you know. Like oh here comes bruce bach these and all star at seventy nine or whatever and then that was the game day. Parker throw are wasting time ingram. I have to give you the random question though older stick of tops baseball game. You've eaten. i've never had one. You've never eaten any of the government of the packs really. I've never actually chewed a piece of gum in my life. Wow i see. I haven't in a long time. I gave up gum well over probably two decades ago. We're very never had never had a lot of the pack. I don't do it regularly. I don't have yeah. I remember at coffee. Baseball cards ruined by piece of gum. That twice took it out. I hate that. I wish they would put it back in. That was part of the fun of the packs. Wait all this. I met matt old a good friend of mine. We were opening these up about a year ago. Nine thousand nine hundred eight tops and he ate the gum and i warned him not to an advanced older than i am. Yeah that's a problem. That's that seems oh advised thirty two. It was no. It's thirty one year old gum. He ate it. He said it was dreadful. And it was dreadful eighty-eight shocking all right. That's a look down history lane here for us. "It's fairly this good. I mean there's no reason he should is he. This is sustainably good. I don't how he loves the prospect rankings and where he's drafted wing. That's not sustainable. Which part of his game would you. Worry isn't sustainable. The on-base percentage that generally follows a guy. That's right behind. Alvin davis as far as starts in mariner history maybe the first few months generally unbased percentage is not something that is going i would think change that much right like if that's something you're good at and you got a good i that should follow you wherever you go. Justin smoak excluded good athleticism and speed. And that's not going to go away. No so if you're worried the power goes away okay. If somebody hasn't hit for that much power is seven. Bombs said. A few home runs but like in major league baseball today. That's not uncommon. You a five hundred. Slugging percentage is pretty pretty good but maybe goes down a little bit. But that's that's not bad if that goes to four thirty instead of five hundred. Is he still a good player. An amazing player. So i i don't see i mean maybe this jake free lease a little. Like this is him at his best but as he gets older as he understands the game. Better i mean like i don't see i don't know what there isn't sustainable brooke. Well if that's the case then you train the chancellor. So i kind of asked that question. Because i don't think any of us in the you know looking at the outfield and looking at julio rodriguez now get elevated. The aa jerk kilner has gotten himself right and i see him hitting the other way. Some highlights sent to you guys and kyle lewis. I know has some injury concern. But i mean if jake farley's good and right now he's third on your team and war one point seven barely behind tie france and j pretty leading the way if he's good then. I think you've got to got to see the next couple of weeks play. I know we'll get into this conversation and what to do. But i mean if he's if he's good if this is a sustainable player trae matana khor i love the take. I'm not sure. I agree with you but i wanna i wanna kind of flush it out a little bit so to me. The only issue with that is if you if you if you make that point and you take haniger out of the lineup every day. It's not that it's for free. It's not fraley because he's already getting daily bats correct. It's what else does that. Do to your outfield right. Yes because now. It's because now you're going to be dependent on kiln accor- you know when these young guys coming up and having attributing yes and we haven't seen and we have not seen success there and now all the sudden you find yourself contending. I assume you mean by july thirty first if the team is still kind of wear their attention obviously if they lay an egg in the next few weeks that major then you're trading haniger anyway for different reason but that's a tough one for me to to kind of get through because it's it's not the freely thing it's the important at bats roy in the mail or cal neck or whomever do we have to go back to. I mean we're seeing a lot of shed long still in left field. Or we're gonna see dylan more donnie. Wall donny what me. Some of these guys weren't outfielder. You trade matana girl and thomas action. It's also another professional rabat on from your lineup which i don't i don't know that you can afford to lose right now. Now the other part of that is trade them for what exactly i mean brock. Let's be clear. Because i know that there's somebody right now screaming at. They're not radio. Whatever it is. You're listening to this on and saying you. Just keep away mitch. Well known giving them away. Remember the point of a trade is that you give up pieces and somebody else gives up equivalent value in some way. So does it depends what you can get back from. Chandigarh correct are you getting back some legitimate major league starting pitching because as you mentioned brooke forty percent of your rotation right now. No offense to either guy are not major league quality of justice. Sheffield marco gonzales. Right now. those are major league pitchers. I know marco is a major league. Pitcher shown it before he'll show it again. I think maybe he's hurt. I don't know but they're not. They're not pitching major leaguers. Every time out. They're not giving you a chance to win correct. I mean they're they're not making quality starts. You're getting three out of five good starts as long as you don't accidentally have one of those guys just have a bump in the road and for forty percent or are just knocking no chance. What was your old great cheap rock. Nc and nc no chance. And that's what marco gonzales starts have become and that's what justice sheffield starts have been so if you're getting back some legitimate starting pitching. Why are you willing to trade mitch. Haniger for an equivalent value starting pitcher with another with. Let's say the similar amount of time and his deal. There's one out there. I don't think the team that you that that has them would be willing to make that trade. It's not german marquez. I know that that's danny's guy and he's right guy be great personally. He's not. I have a list of of four guys to go after he's not on my list. I think he's too expensive. I just think that he's you know with what he's done in the last month. Good star and good luck. But you just got to see kyle gibson the other day for taxes Your plus left on his deal. I mean really similar. Look at the numbers i mean. He's good he's really. I don't think texas would want mitch haniger. They're in. They're in a more of a rebuild than you are. They'd have to be some sort of a three team deal in order to make something like that happen but the point is just that there are players of that kind of value. No i don't wanna trade matana gir- but would i trade them for pitcher like like gibson who i keep one uncle josh gibson's not him. Kyle gets them he. I would want me to. you're gone. I got a sneak peek at your list of the guys that you consolidating over. And what if you trade him for legitimate pop in the middle your lineup. Legitimate game we'll get. I don't see that as being deal either. But i mean there's some there's some fun stuff to consider it leads to the. Let's ask the big quayle ascot. Throw it out there. Mike even tip tone it flyer. Chris woodward now should the rangers. I gotta tell you. I was watching that game friday night. I watched i stayed up. I was on vacation. i was in bend. I think it was the same night. I'd gotten no. It was one hundred and fourteen degrees. I did get into another fight with old people. I will talk about your sock one out now. I absolute well little you do that for all. People have to stop watching cable.

"Casualty insurance company and affiliates price and coverage match limited by state law and of the fifty thousand people. Tie ball game. Play against the dodgers. All you gotta do. But off a mike marshall who was a relief pitcher of the year the year before he dated. That girl that was in the bangles are are what what was that girl. That singer I can't think she was. I think it was the bengals from one of those groups. Anyway sorry i. I had a no net. I've tried to remember named brenda. Somebody carlisle brinda. Yeah yeah really cute. Yeah yeah so anyway. So i get up. I ended up and he says now button to first base because he said if you bought the first chances are steve. Garvey was planted time. Eight ballplayer said. Steve probably won't throw to second. I don't know if his arm was bothering more. So i get the sacrifice. I think pete walk and we get a base hit. We win the game two to one and probably the most important bad. I hadn't all of the big leagues. Because if i don't but it then sparky probably sends me back down to triple a ball. 'cause that was going to be what i would have to be doing most of the year we do a whole show on how to put down a bond. I mean i it really could or you watch league game. You can see how not to put down button. They don't know how to but they don't do it much anymore. And i never understood that as a pitcher when you can help yourself. Why not be able to bunt the ball. And and you know so. I i don't know but it's it's a different game but man in the seventies when i look back at the guys i played against and played with. I mean what a blast. Let's talk about the world series and then we're going to okay you get into you get with the red your with you guys go the world series and you win it to two years in a row. Yeah the the the first year there was so much pressure on the big red machine to win. 'cause in seventy got beat by baltimore seventy two that got beat by oakland. Seventy-three got beat by the mets and the playoffs. Seventy four. they disappeared seventy five now. We actually were nineteen and twenty. Was our record. We went to montreal. We came back riverfront stadium and we were just a five hundred or a little bit below five hundred ballclub. We plan to mets. Tom seaver pitching. We ended up with an game. Eleven to four and win forty one out of the next fifty and that kind of we had a big lead. I think we won by twenty that year. We just had a huge lead. We just kept rolling. That was the west bacteria. then that was the west. Yeah we had to beat the dodgers if you beat the dodgers then you pretty much because they were always good so we go in the world series and now there's so much pressure because he's the best team like mickelson before he won the master's yes a best team to never win it with the big red machine. But they've been there but they just haven't win so now we end up car bernie carbo hits the three run homer in game six fisk hits the home run vs the red sox versus the red sox would go to game seven and i'll never forget. My locker was next to pete's and a rider says peach. Gotta be devastated man. This was it the big red machine. You had the game. Europe six to three. You know this is what's going to solidify. The big red machine is one of the greatest teams of all time. You just gotta be devastated and pizza. What are you crazy. He said tomorrow there's going to be millions of people watching. He said we'll be the only game in town and every kid has ever put on a uniform would love to be in a situation. Play out a seven game of world series. And i we're gonna be okay then but here's another thing i'm thinking to. My salary is sixteen thousand five hundred if we win the world series. We'll make another fourteen thousand thirty thousand dollars. This year makes much money's my mom. My dad does so sure enough. The next night we win the game and then the following year seventy six man. We just rolled because it was like the pressure's all off. Now let's just go play ball so we go out and we just we just rolled. That's unbeliev and then they start changing. They got rid of tony perez and a whole bunch of other was off at team and they just never wear the same. You had leadership in tony perez. Pete rose joe morgan johnny bench four guys that they teams. Don't even have one leader had four and you had you know spanish black and white. Yeah and so. It wasn't like there were any issues on that ball club. No but they made sure they were the smartest bunch of baseball guys. I've ever seen right. And they were winners will lose it too many of them by the way i you know i was the baby. I told her i was the baby on the big red machine. The baby turned seventy a couple of weeks ago so one day at a time. One day at a time you got friends. Who don't you up so you know what that's going to be the last. You only got two more birthdays. Two zero. I claim him this friends but they don't always claim me as doug one of the ways i have known you as been through the fellowship of christian athletes. I've heard you talk about your relationship with the lord. This is something we're not afraid to talk about on this radio show and we do. We do talk about those things. Tell me how that figured into your life in in the things that you did and when that became more real to you than before. I was baptized at age twelve. Because i grew up in a christian home. Mom and dad had a church every sunday wednesday night. Bible school everything and pretty much for my early years. I was going to church not realizing what it was like to have a personal relationship with christ so i started playing pro ball and I i remember going to bed. One night and prancing all right lord said. Here's the deal. I'm dating this young girl right now. We're gonna make a little deal in. And i need to know if this is a person that i need to marry because i'm ready to ask her and that's kind of the way i used to pray. Lord please hit a couple of hits today. And i'll go told you gave it. You know that kind of stuff. I was out there bargaining with god. And so. I wake up the next morning. It works short-term sometimes but it doesn't work. I am not endorsing this by the way. Yeah so i I wake up the next morning. There's a letter from my wife that it somehow been mailed. Two weeks ago they got hung up in the mail that shows up at the house that morning and it tells me how she feels about me so i got on the phone at night and i called and i propose to her on the phone. I was so bold. See us from new jersey and so we get married in one thousand nine hundred eighty two and it is a rough year while the same year i get traded texas. I have no idea. I was only there four months so they started a bible. Study out there for couples. Frank kanana jim sundberg and a bunch of really wonderful people So they start his bible study. My wife says we're going to his bible. Study go so we go the bible study. Is that in this one thousand nine hundred eight worth or something. Yeah nineteen eighty-two yeah and come home one day and i mean. It was rough. Because i used to come home after game. I had a bad game. I'd be me and my dog. We could talk about it and you know. Relax now. I gotta come home. I got hear a wife going. So how. Come eating any hits. Did you take any extra batting. practice will so and so got some. Here's well why does he get to do this. And i'm gonna get this ain't gonna work so she said One day i come home. She says we're going to pro athletes outreach christian conference where it's gonna be all pro baseball players and we go to that conference in nineteen eighty four. And there's kanana's alvin davis and brett butler and scott sanderson and all guys who just became dear friends in life. And that's when. I got there and hurt somebody get up and what. I realized that. I had all the hidden knowledge but i didn't have a relationship of christ and i didn't realize that i needed to make him the lord of my life in everything that we did on our marriage in my business or whatever i i had to console him i mean. That's what i ask people today..

Can trees talk

"Alexia Constantino and Katie McMahon both work at the smart lab at the University of British Columbia in Canada the smart lab is a diverse group of students who study how trees and soil are connected to the ecosystem Alexia studies how forest harvesting affects wildlife and Katie studies the way. The Food Forest Web recovers after mining, Alexia, Constantino and Katie McMahon. Thank you for joining us today. Thank you for having us. Yes thanks very much for having gone. I'm really looking forward to the show. Yeah me too, and so kids. If you have questions we would love for you to call now, or you can send an email to questions at, but why kids dot. Org let's dive right into the questions and we're GONNA. Start with some basics here and then I really WanNa. Get into later on a little bit more about tree communication, which is one of the things that this lab specializes in, but let's start with this question from Lucy. I'm from? Connecticut in I. WanNa Know House cleese quo. We had another question from a four year old in Bristol. Who wanted to know the same thing so Kadian Alexia? Which one of you wants to tackle, just the basics of how trees grow. Katie year I can take that first one so just like humans trees need food and water to grow but they get this there this food and water in quite a different way than we do. So trees and plants are really incredible in that they can actually get their food from the sunlight. So this process is called photosynthesis, and it's really amazing. The trees can take energy from the sunlight and just using water and carbon dioxide, rich, a molecule floating around in the air. They can create energy. On so far this energy that forms of sugars which contain. Carbon. and so that's how they get their main energy for Brawley, but then the water of course comes from the soil. So, they can take the water from the soil, using their roots, and they also get other nutrients and vitamins from the soil as well. We'll. Let's go a little bit deeper into that with a couple of other questions. We have because you were just talking Katie. About some of the The things that a treat needs like water, and it also needs oxygen and sunlight, so here's a question from Sienna I'm eleven use old. Alvin Davis, California and my question is do trees breathe, and if they do where they breathe from all right, and before you get to that, here are two more questions, hello, my name is Luna and I am seven years old. I live in Oregon. My question is how do you choose? Give us oxygen. Hi, my name Rayvey I'm seven years old. I'm from London, and my question is how you treat bay coke should. We also got a question from ranch lives in the United Kingdom with the same question, so talk talk to us a little bit more about oxygen and the role of oxygen for trees in how they breathe, and in how we breathe. Share so you can almost think of trees as breathing backwards from us so when we take a breath in We're? We're breathing in air and we're really were taking oxygen out of it. That's what we need to breathe. And then when we x hell outcomes, the carbon dioxide, and so trees actually kind of do this in reverse So you mentioned earlier that when they do photosynthesis, they're taking the carbon dioxide out of the air and using. Their sugars energy. but then. Whence that sugars in the tree gets used up. Then that when it uses up that carbon, it actually produces oxygen, and that is released back out into the air. For us to breathe as humans And spent I think one of the question mentioned Where does that happen in so the the The air actually goes into the trees through. little pores in the leaves. Are the needles called still matter and so that's where the air comes in when they're when the leads, the needles are doing photosynthesis. Do we call it breathing I? Mean would you say that trees breathe? You know that's an interesting question People feel strongly about whether you can apply thirty human centered words to trees. I'm sure we'll get to this later today when we're talking about these communicating whether trees could talk, or only humans can talk, and so I put this in the same category The air is going in and out of trees in there using. Using carbon from it and putting oxygen back into, it so whether you want to call that breathing. Is the the scientific words, photosynthesis and respiration I. Guess Out for debate.
