He also had a nice real of defensive gems reminiscent of a certain Hall of Famer that used to make incredible defensive plays for the Mariners. Now Lewis is the fourth Mariner to win Rookie of the Year honors. Joining Alvin Davis causes sake and each row, the Rookie of the year honors result of Lewis, making a big jump with his performance at the plate. Man in the field. So I just want to be more consistent, You know, with my bet someone that consistently good at best. Be comfortable working deep accounts, be comfortable put the ball in play. You know, get his woman of all around to a healthy teeth, and then I wanted to improve defensively. You know, I wanted to make another jump defensively to get back to you like I could play it, you know, so I feel like I definitely accomplish that. Offensively now because another level I could go to next year. Gonna keep getting better. The Seahawks were dismantled defensively yesterday and Buffalo. The bill's pretty much abandoned the running game who said, Throw the ball endlessly against SIAC secondary that looked lost and overmatched. Those quarterback Josh Allen threw for 415 yards and three touchdowns on the Bills. Way to scoring 44 points. The most points ever given up by the Seahawks. With Pete Carroll is their head coach was a low point for the past defense and Carol's hopeful things will get better. I think we're gonna keep continue to get better. We're gonna make a move. It's gonna look hopefully looks markedly different than what's happened in the first half on the numbers and stuff. Don't give you so much fuel to keep asking the questions and feeling bad about it on all of us included and we can turn this thing around. Can trees talk

"Alexia Constantino and Katie McMahon both work at the smart lab at the University of British Columbia in Canada the smart lab is a diverse group of students who study how trees and soil are connected to the ecosystem Alexia studies how forest harvesting affects wildlife and Katie studies the way. The Food Forest Web recovers after mining, Alexia, Constantino and Katie McMahon. Thank you for joining us today. Thank you for having us. Yes thanks very much for having gone. I'm really looking forward to the show. Yeah me too, and so kids. If you have questions we would love for you to call now, or you can send an email to questions at, but why kids dot. Org let's dive right into the questions and we're GONNA. Start with some basics here and then I really WanNa. Get into later on a little bit more about tree communication, which is one of the things that this lab specializes in, but let's start with this question from Lucy. I'm from? Connecticut in I. WanNa Know House cleese quo. We had another question from a four year old in Bristol. Who wanted to know the same thing so Kadian Alexia? Which one of you wants to tackle, just the basics of how trees grow. Katie year I can take that first one so just like humans trees need food and water to grow but they get this there this food and water in quite a different way than we do. So trees and plants are really incredible in that they can actually get their food from the sunlight. So this process is called photosynthesis, and it's really amazing. The trees can take energy from the sunlight and just using water and carbon dioxide, rich, a molecule floating around in the air. They can create energy. On so far this energy that forms of sugars which contain. Carbon. and so that's how they get their main energy for Brawley, but then the water of course comes from the soil. So, they can take the water from the soil, using their roots, and they also get other nutrients and vitamins from the soil as well. We'll. Let's go a little bit deeper into that with a couple of other questions. We have because you were just talking Katie. About some of the The things that a treat needs like water, and it also needs oxygen and sunlight, so here's a question from Sienna I'm eleven use old. Alvin Davis, California and my question is do trees breathe, and if they do where they breathe from all right, and before you get to that, here are two more questions, hello, my name is Luna and I am seven years old. I live in Oregon. My question is how do you choose? Give us oxygen. Hi, my name Rayvey I'm seven years old. I'm from London, and my question is how you treat bay coke should. We also got a question from ranch lives in the United Kingdom with the same question, so talk talk to us a little bit more about oxygen and the role of oxygen for trees in how they breathe, and in how we breathe. Share so you can almost think of trees as breathing backwards from us so when we take a breath in We're? We're breathing in air and we're really were taking oxygen out of it. That's what we need to breathe. And then when we x hell outcomes, the carbon dioxide, and so trees actually kind of do this in reverse So you mentioned earlier that when they do photosynthesis, they're taking the carbon dioxide out of the air and using. Their sugars energy. but then. Whence that sugars in the tree gets used up. Then that when it uses up that carbon, it actually produces oxygen, and that is released back out into the air. For us to breathe as humans And spent I think one of the question mentioned Where does that happen in so the the The air actually goes into the trees through. little pores in the leaves. Are the needles called still matter and so that's where the air comes in when they're when the leads, the needles are doing photosynthesis. Do we call it breathing I? Mean would you say that trees breathe? You know that's an interesting question People feel strongly about whether you can apply thirty human centered words to trees. I'm sure we'll get to this later today when we're talking about these communicating whether trees could talk, or only humans can talk, and so I put this in the same category The air is going in and out of trees in there using. Using carbon from it and putting oxygen back into, it so whether you want to call that breathing. Is the the scientific words, photosynthesis and respiration I. Guess Out for debate.

I eight career games in the modern era which since nineteen hundred tremors story had nine in in two thousand sixteen and we all remember the home runs streaky got off to obviously most of those extra-base hits home runs and alvin. Davis had nine thousand nine hundred eighty four with the mariners so we got connection there. I love it. Okay boba shit. Vladi junior will leave kevin busy out of this question 'cause he's probably we're not quite on the level of those two guys. Who would you pick to build your team around sarah. That's interesting. You know applied. Junior has been so electric especially lately. You know the power and everything but everything i've heard about boba shut. It seems like he might be a little bit more of an all around l. player <hes> and obviously we haven't seen him for quite as long as junior has been great. There's no question and you know his his defense has been fine but that was a question. We'll see where he ends up us. You know five or ten years from now. <hes> i think either the great pick but i might i mean voters said just can't stop making contact and like that. That seems like exactly what you want line yeah. I think the question there is he going to be able to stick at shortstop or some concerns there e._s. I think you're going to be pinch hitting as host next weeks so start your preparation. Oh yeah i'm on it. That's nice one thing next to the fourteen. I'm sorry i don't know a day that but on the fourteenth i'll be there looking forward to it and thank you so much for all right. Thanks their best leisure tweets. Welcome back for the second day of liter tweets. The first one comes from debbie gammons brown who i'm a big fan of. She is at the game and the brown. It's a championship hangover over as much of an issue in other sports as it is in baseball. I don't see tom brady nursing a headache after he collects another super bowl ring seem to be more more of an excuse in baseball speaking of tom brady. Did you see bella check yesterday. I think he at his press conference said something like yeah. Brady has been pretty consistent consistent in his career. Yeah thanks bill for the insight yeah. You don't hear about that and other sports. Do you know you really don't the patriots they certainly haven't had any super bowl hangovers and their two decade run next one comes from brian simpson. Now this this question a few days ago but it's still relevant. I want to hear your take on brian simpson at one two. I feel about what I'm saying on. This program go ahead at Jeff rich talks but right now talking Seattle Mariners there's in your this is a team that I remember from my childhood. You know the way that we discussed them in a driveway off a cul de sac in a suburb of a city that was you know one thousand nine hundred miles away <hes> we looked at Seattle and wondering why couldn't win they had J. Buehner. They had Ken Griffey Junior. They had Edgar Martinez Randy Johnson no problem. It was the pitching after Randy Johnson. There just wasn't a lot of their. I mean this is this is an organization. That's had a hall of Famer in Griffey a one day hall of Famer in each row. Who knows what's what's going to be the case with Edgar Martinez? I would suspect if Harold Baines gets in primarily as a designated hitter throughout his career that Edgar Martinez cannot be very far behind with enshrinement to cooperstown. Each euro should already be in the hallway time Felix. This isn't going to be an interesting case because you're gonNA look at the numbers and you're not gonNa love them but the people that remembered him pitching will get him in. You know it's I hope doesn't tarnish it too much by pitching long in his career one guy that did not do that Randy Johnson you know you had some some rough times around the edges at the end. Hopefully nobody remembers them too much as a New York Yankee but as a as an Arizona Divac as a Seattle Mariner that's how Randy Johnson should be remembered. Remember he wants the title and I hate getting snobby about championship rings things but he wins the title with the Arizona diamondbacks. He was the most valuable player in that two thousand and one world series so he definitely deserves to be remembered as diamondback despite how great he was perhaps the greatest Seattle Mariner a pitcher at least in franchise history. You could make an argument for Felix. You can make an argument for even Jamie Moyer who's right at the top as far as that war statistic it goes <hes> you know they've had Robertson Cano there on the ad the O._J.. Buehner once upon a time Alvin Davis Harold Reynolds guys from the old more royal blue with the yellow s the Cap John Olerud stop there of course Nelson Cruz more recently might Cameron Mike Ever Nate. I believe Mike ever knee and Freddy Garcia too big. You know two pieces of that Ken Griffey Junior trade with the Cincinnati natty reds.

"Britain. Sips. Have outscored the Wildcats thirty six to seven here on the second half. With two interception returns and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. And it's thirty nine to twenty eight. This is just pretty much a disaster here for the Wildcats at the bowling. Can they recover but how about Alvin Davis? How many times do you see a pick six game? How many times you see two in a game? And how many times do you see it by the same guide the same player while we saw one time at Cal five years ago? Yeah. Colin Ellis a linebacker for us pick twelve here for Davis. Yes, sir. And I'll tell you he did turn into running back or return guy. Whatever you wanna call it. He had some blazing speed all the right moves and all the right decisions to get back in the end zone. The second time. Parts. So Fisher will kick off yet again. I honestly I can't remember the last time we saw something like this. Man. The Wildcats are in deep trouble now at seven twenty four to go. Here's the run up. The kickoff by pitching mccowan will feel it Cairo. Mcgowan will touch the knee doubt five yards. David capsule. Take it out of the twenty five yard line. The cats defense he gave up eighteen points tonight, low thirty nine the rest of Rama degrom the offense. The problem is now the place they did give up tat does those looked at much bigger. Yes, they do because you're thinking the offense had its moments in your thinking the defense can carry you that hasn't happened. Let's see what the offense can do right here. Clayton. Thorson's? Remember that? Seven twenty four to go. But I down Clayton will throw it steps up. Fires short complete to Larkin for short yardage to the twenty eight yard line. The overtakes him down. If you're going to run the shallow proc- office. We'd arrived with short little pass-bys. You gotta throw accurate balls on the money. You can't throw behind him. And he was he had no pressure at all. Just rope behind Clayton Thorson has his six career three hundred yard passer game tonight. Retrieved that right now. Five wide receivers empty backfield. Second and ten for the end, you thirty seven thirty nine twenty eight the Akron lead Dorsey being flushed from the pocket throwing on the Rodney throws it away. Smart incomplete at it brings up thirty down at ten six forty one to go ward applying pressure so third down for the Wildcats gave in a couple of guys down there by the first down markers. And he was going to have to throw across his body to try to fit it in there. He did the correct thing. I'll gotta come more down here. It's third and ten now. Don't make a mistake. Don't compound trips right moment to the left the short side on third down and ten for the Wildcats. Here's the snap to Thorson Thorson throwing over the middle passes caught by Nagel. And he's driven back. Short of the first down got into the forty six yard line. Brian bell, drove him back. It's four now. And now with six twenty seven to go down by two scores. A goal for the council court down tonight. Oh for. Three including a ninety seven yard pick six. Here we go four down and a long yard to go here. Snap to Thorson Thorson now roles right directing traffic running out of room trying to get to the first down marker can't get their Thorson was hit and Brian bell. Hit a I don't think he got the first down. Daddy. No. He did. They Mark him out about. I don't think he did. Dave. A heck of an effort. Oh guy just ride dri. It is I down Akron with six oh. To to go. The Wildcats over four on fourth down accurate takes over with six oh to to go leading thirty nine to twenty eight over the Wildcats. So played Thorson trying to get their curriculum to it not in your to a receiver Howard. And so. The Wildcats gained four hundred twenty two yards of offense three hundred thirty two through the air. They've only run for ninety. And their deep. Trouble down with six oh to to go well to misfield goals three. Turnovers for touchdowns. Do the math. That's twenty one plus six. That's the volcanic. I'll tell you. What the defense? I know what the defensive guys gonna say they didn't come up with any turtle. Yes. They're going to put that on themselves. So I say. One of those times where we'll see what happens here over the final six zero two. But. You know, the defense to give up a lot of big plays tonight to some of those explosion place. Yeah. Western Nagel starts in motion. As Thorson looks. It over snap to Klay drops pressures coming steps up starts to rot across the thirty thirty five along the sideline to the forty nine. About penalty marker down the twenty five yard line of flagged out in the backfield. Longest route the season for Clayton Thorson and pick the apparent I doubt. But this one's coming back. A very impressive run. Offense number fifty nine penalty from the previous spot third-down JD Butler the left guard and that is the first penalty of the game against the wild. And the big one to Clayton. He really needed that for his confidence. And you could see him coming back onto the field after he ran off the field in front of his own bench. Everyone just game. Hi, FIS and excitement, then he turned around, and you can see the expression was fake. Oh, no. Going back. Larkin back into running back down at sixteen wild cast their own Twenty-one trips right signal receiver left swing past Larkin. The catch fifteen to the twenty gets a block to the twenty five thirty to the thirty five close to a first down to the thirty seven yard line. Did he get it got to be very close? It is a first down for the Wildcats. They needed sixteen. They got sixteen. Roar smell Larkin mainly Jeremy locking with some good walking that son. Yeah. He he did a nice job. He's the second leading receiver on this team coming into gaming eleven catches for over seventy yards. And you can see why he really made guys missing the open field on top of it. Burst out of ten for the Wildcats at Thorson rolling left. Stop man wide open downfield. Twenty five twenty. Defense all by himself. Wait for the ball to get their Alvin Davis there to take him down. I down for the Wildcats at the twenty yard line. Definitely a breakdown. Secondary had opened down outside the numbers one hundred Lodder pressure. There is a nice pass forty three yards. I down to the twenty of the zips with eight thirty two to go first half hats up seven nothing. They'll give to Larkin Larkin slanting off the right side, bounces it out still keep the legs moving an. By Chiron Brown. Only got a yard on the play Mark. And really took a shot. Daresay got rid of that football. Tried to step up in the pocket when he stepped right into someone's shoulder pad. He went down as he delivered. But he knew he could get it out of his hands. It was gonna be a big a big play eight minutes to go and a half seven nothing north western cap. Fires complete to the five Cameron green. Five yard line is going to be first goal market down. Five. I doubt goal to go. Beautiful throw my right on the lottery was really nice rats in my camping. Larkin will take it. Right. Larkin inside the five. Taxpayer. Tonight. Jeremy? Wildcats billionaire with seven twenty one I I really liked Mark out of that county. Does a very good there. He makes a nice read, but he's all for the end zone. They're nice walking up front the point of attack. Everybody was involved in hand and needed Watson. But he danced in five yard rod for Larkin who Bander for the PAT. Seventy three yards. Seven plays all the drive and the kick by coup Bander is straight through. "It's good one. But the punt is not it's live Dr hits at the forty five at roles data at the thirty six it had you territory that was a low line drive kick. Look like he just wanted to get rid of it that time with he did take over leading seven. Nothing with five thirty five to go to work cats can really put themselves. I think in a rule. Good metal spot here right now. They got the fumble punts. I should say not punt but snap then they went three and out. Fake. A turnaround puts up on the board pretty quick here. I think that would be really good for that mentally a little depressing for accurate. Imagine accurate seven and six last year. They did open with a blowout loss on the road at Penn State. Terry Bowden in his seventh year in Akron. Former coaching Auburn several coaching stops twenty five year career taking him. I think his stopping offer. Now was it easy national championship? He had there. Placing wintrust sideline report which rows official back western athletic goes back. Catapult Ted's here point about this opportunity. Hear the game degree was finishing drives. They didn't do that on the first right now, they did take advantage of that last opportunity after the mishap for Akron. It wasn't exactly drive. But it was a huge opportunity took advantage of. But here they go to have the ball and opportunities you go through of all the way down the field, actually, finish it drive. It just be a big lift for this team right now to be able to do that. While you're down there. Take a little looking at offense of line. And and see what the what the field is right there. What the attitude is the cop because they're running the football so far very nicely here. Yeah. There was actually a lot of confidence coming out after that. Jeremy Larkin touchdown run. One thing. I've noticed too Clayton Thorson has been more in the offense of lying conversations. So far this season, actually. Getting in that. Which is a little bit. A little bit the last few years, but it's almost every single time. And he's almost coaching the offensive line as he gets more and more experience, and they also might have seen spanks where he might have to change the direction of the protection from one side to the opposite side based on their looks. So there's a lot of communication going on from a protection standpoint too. Four receivers to the right want to the left Thorson and the God. James Cameron greed. Ivanka those guys as Thorson looks things over I out for the thirty six cents up a screen red sock. Caught at the thirty five of the forty at moving ahead across the forty to the forty three yard wider. Jeremy Larkin and dropped out by John lake go after a nice get on first out of seven yards second free upcoming. Three out of five fifteen for the first quarter has leading seven nothing looking for more. Thorson Onder Saturday this time hands to Larkin spins out of a tackle. In the backfield gets shoved back. The ball comes out. I think he was already down there. Davis. John Salako nothing do at that time to brings up third down. One of their less productive plays on the even the Wildcats author down. Three JJ Jefferson, the true freshman. He's out to the right alongside Cam breeders in the slot in running back on third down in short, and they'll Swayne up passes chapter and moten tried to haul. It all the rebound. Put quite do. It broke it up. Late at Bryant bell was the guy who did it. And so it brings up four down hats this day. Go three now very heads up play by their outside linebacker. They're tippy nap all if he had not gotten his hand up that would have been a first down to mountain as he went off towards his own bench there in the flat out a three and out J Collins on pot, Audrey Williams. Here is the snap. Here's off high floated down the far hash Mark fair. Catch signal debate at the seventeen yard line by Andrei Williams. Is so accurate gets the boss still looking for their first, I doubt they've been out gained a total offense sixty three yards to find this one here the first quarter, but only outscored seven now thinking that I think you just hit the nail the head of your. I mean, you get these chances. They've started twice inside accurate territory scored on one of those but they've had good field position. And now that that's what they talked about gotta finish drives. Right. Akron for their own seventeen three announced not a good start. And Al submersion penalty markers down. They said Edwards in motion that time. And we have flags all over the field. False start offense number fifty six five yard penalty. I doubt that is the right tackle Brandon council. So it'll be I out at fifteen puts that behind the change at the twelve yard line. Four twenty five to go with the first quarter. After the penalty hurt. The cats have been pretty good offensively on first down plays. They've gotten good yardage. They have not been stuck behind the chains. Like Akron is right here at first and fifteen that's always disadvantage, especially when you got the bomb the twelve yard line. Snapped to Nelson on a drug Edwards is a race to the backfield. They were on him. So quickly. It was amazing. Jared McGee got in there and a big loss of the player. Now at the second half a mile a loss on the play of four four all the way back to the yard line breaks up second down in nineteen and the safety blitz. Jerry McGee with eleven tackles there, you could see him creeping up on the white side of the field. He crashed in he barely handed the ball off and Mckee Maitha tackle h Stuart out to the left two receivers. Right. Second out of nineteen acrid Nelson. His heels on his own three yard line. He'll just he'll take himself off the left side and runs out near the original of scrimmage baked the gift to Edwards pulled it back out. Sideline. With Gregg new Saranda down near the original line of scrimmage, the seventeen breaks up had reached twenty six to go with the first quarter. You can see how shifty he is quarterback. What a nice job he made the first defender for the cats missing the open field. Stewart wide left Boris wide. Right. They stack two receivers. Including smith. The right side in the slot. Thirty ten Nelson throwing short left, and it is caught at the twenty five short of the first buying couple caught by Nate Stewart. Nice grab it is short of the first it has to be fourth-down. What's get Akron will punt? So they go three and out yet again. We saw a little bit of this type of play last week in the second half of the Cavs were playing defense with a bunch of free and outs. What we've seen so far here totaling land was a completed catch that players under further review. All right. They're going to take a look at this did. Stewart attack. Catch the ball. We get a look at the replay here of the good. Did you see a tab because he's still short of the first down. Well, either way they're going to punt. But it's absolutely. But there's still some yardage shirt. Have potentially eight yard difference. Adam Hoge you saw. Yeah. It's one of those where he was low to the ground, and there definitely was some kind of bobble. So it's just a matter of did the ball hit the ground as he bobbled it. It was very close by he was short anyway. But he was short. But you'd certainly rather have putting a little bit deeper. Give a big little better field position. That's eight yard kipper potentially day. That's such a valid point. Just keep looks it. Looks to me like. A slip under his hands as he dove. Again, it's it's gotta be. Looser video evidence. And I'm not sure where to get loose of evidence here indisputable video evidence to know, I think it hit the ground just just based on what we see on the Jumbotron. But that doesn't mean that's what they'll call. Here comes the call after review the ruling on the field Sanders called completed catch fourth out. So it is fourth out, and they will pot. There's been four three announced this game. So far. Three one for the three and outs here for Akron again, Ryan lease, he's active. He's been busy accurate. Still without a first down to thirty eight to go in the first quarter cats league seven out the gas to Puffer zone. Tat Lee standing at the thirty eight yard line. Here's the Keck it again shortly dry, take it by lease at the forty three yard line is doubt right away. Never had a chance that time has Dustin Burkhardt wide receiver got downfield on special teams, the takedown. Briley. Lease and the cats with better field position this Brian than they have the last word starting from the one yard line after that pot, and that was a very high punt is hard to handle by warmly punt. But if he had not billeted, and he took a lot of ability to fill their little roll forever. I was a line driver. All right. So. Two receivers left to the right to twenty seven to go in the first quarter. I down for the end you forty-one to give will be to lock into running left gets a block pots it up across the forty five to the fifty. Accurate territory to the forty nine yard live very close to a first down. He didn't get it. He's maybe a half a yard short Alvin Davis had Ulysses Gilbert random down. Wow. That's really well blocked play at the point of attack on everybody got involved hat on hat Cameron green making a great edge setting block to here on the left side of that offensive line second down to less than one Thorson in the shotgun.
