Seattle's new starting quarterback Gino Smith NFC offensive player of the week. He says his ability to change into a better play at the line of scrimmage is something he's proud of. It's been a part of my game. I've always made that a focal point in my game, playing above the neck. I feel like I'm physically talented, but I think you gain an edge when you're able to play above the neck and all my favorite quarterbacks did that. And so I just try and emulate that. Smith and the Seahawks are slight underdogs in that NFC Sunday matchup in the Crescent city. After wrapping up the regular season with three straight home wins and a 90 and 72 record, the Mariners are now in Canada gearing up for a tough baseball wild card playoff against the Blue Jays. The Men Who Can Put Trump Away Need to Back the Women Charging Him

"Put on the legal analyst hat and then we understand there's that we need to do this in the appropriate way and that's where I'm saying you got to come at this guy from all vectors. And the things that people are doing, some people, at least, are completely appropriate. The Tisch James lawsuit completely appropriate. The January 6th committee has been completely on point to this point and I expect this week to be even more even more interesting, right? There are law enforcement officials who are doing what needs to be done, it's just I don't want to make it as it's not as simple as this, but it's just like it's the women who are doing it. It's like the guys who are letting us down, right? Like when it comes to actual prosecution and actual jail time, it's not up to tish James. It's up to Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, who seems to be afraid of Donald Trump. That's the best. That's the nicest way I can put it. Right? We did seem to wake him from his nap. Welcome from his nap though, right? He was like, what? Oh, no, I'm working. I'm totally doing something though. He's not. He's not, he should have been with Tisch James when she is leaning out civil charges. He should have been laying out criminal charges at the same time, but he's trying to get away. He's trying to avoid taking on the big bear, right? Yeah. We don't need just Zoe lofgren and Liz Cheney on the January 6th committee who are doing great. And we need Merrick Garland. Yeah. We don't need basically at this point Cassidy Hutchinson to have the biggest cajones in Washington, D.C., we need Merrick Garland to back her up at some point. So at some point you got the people with the power to put this man in jail, have to step up to the plate. The people with the power to charge him civilly to explain the nature of his many, many, many, many crimes. They seem to be on the wall and doing the job.

Sean Feucht Drops In After His Times Square 'Let Us Worship' Event

"Ladies and gentlemen Sean Foyt, Sean, I can't believe you are in the studio. In the flesh. Every time I've interviewed you on this program, you've been in a car on a hilltop in California. Right? Yeah. And you are in New York City. Welcome to New York, my friend. Thank you. I was just Alvin and I were just telling my audience our version of what happened last night. And it was so beautiful and a friend of mine, my wilkerson said, oh, and when the sun went down while we're worshiping, that was the beginning of Roche Shaun at the beginning of the Jewish new year. And I said, that was not planned. That was amazing. To be worshiping Jesus in the middle of Times Square. Publicly, beautifully. So last night we saw the film, the film super spread is fantastic. The only part I didn't like is my part. I'm in it folks. I apologize, you know what I mean? I was just very bullish. I was bloated and confused. But they put it in any way, because but Sean, just tell us, what happened yesterday? Man, it was wild. I mean, like you mentioned, you know, being in Times Square, the place where the ball drops, the place where the eyes of the world look at during new years. And we were there actually during the real new years. Is that not amazing? Yeah, it's so cool. And what was even more wild, I mean, there's so many different threads to weave, but when we first came in 2020 and we were on the West Coast and we were doing lettuce worship and of course, you know, people were, there was a narrative from the media that it was like this anti lockdown anti government protest. It wasn't that at all. It was just like, hey, we're The Church of Jesus Christ. We need to rise up. This is a dark time people are fearful. People are filled with, you know, this chaos is confusion, drug and alcohol use of skyrocketing, suicides, this guy rocketing, we need to worship. And so then when I had it in my heart, like we got to go to New York City. This is a city I love. I've been coming here since I was a kid, and when we showed up in Washington square park under the big arch, there was a policeman there, a chief of police that met me and he said, what are you guys doing here? And I said, well, you know, we're here to worship. And at that time, protesters had been raging through that park. And it was just a place of chaos and violence. And he said, well, we could use the church here.

Eric Launches His New Book 'Letter to the American Church'!

"So exhausted because yesterday was the launch day of the book. My new book, letter to the American church, and oh my goodness, I did so much media, which is a blessing, but it is absolutely exhausting. I even did stuff yesterday that they didn't air yesterday, but I was on with Charlie Kirk in, I guess at 2 o'clock, he had me up for the whole hour. And it was, it was pretty extraordinary, really, to do an hour with Charlie. And I think that accounts for here's the good news. Alvin, I think you just mentioned it to me, but the book hit the top 100 on Amazon. Yes. Yesterday, which I have to tell you, and it's still in the top 100 right now. That's a big deal, folks. So any of you who ordered the book in the last few days in particular, I want to say thank you because I know I mentioned this every time I come out with a book, but it is really vital to the success of a book that it do very well in the beginning and that it bump into onto bestseller lists. Otherwise, it pretty much gets forgotten.

The Left's Criminalization of Political Differences

"Want to talk today about the left strategy and dealing with Republicans and strategy that is focused on Trump, but I would argue in the end it's not just about Trump and to some degree it's not about Trump at all. So here is an article in The New York Times. Just from a day or so ago, it talks about 6 separate investigations into Trump. And let's look at what those are. There is the New York State investigation, and this is the New York attorney general letitia James who had campaigned. I'm going to investigate Trump. I'm going to go, I'll find something on him. So there's that investigation going on. There's the Manhattan DA's office investigation. That's not going too far. But that's the investigation that focuses on the Trump organization. That's led by the Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg. That's number two. Number three, there is the, there's the congressional investigation, of course, though, the forefront of this is the January 6th committee. So that's investigation number three. The congressional investigation more broadly and then the January 6th committee, which is number four, I guess. And then we have the newest investigations, including the investigation for about the Mar-a-Lago classified documents. So here we've got the kind of multiplicity of investigations and all of it seems like overkill. But the reason it's not overkill is that with none of these does the left really have the goods. They're fishing, yes. But what are they trying to accomplish with all this? The criminalization, if you will, of political differences. Well, what they're trying to accomplish is they're trying to create veto power over Trump. They're trying to say to Republicans basically listen. We, the Democrats get to say, we don't get to say who your nominee is in 2024. But we do get to say who it's not.

Eric Discusses His New Book 'Letter to the American Church'

"I interview someone, but today Albin, he thought it would be fun for him to interview me since I have a new book out called letter to the American church, so Alvin. Yeah. It's yours. Usually it's fun. I got to tell you my favorite book because of the fun aspect is Martin Luther because it was such a crazy time. It almost looks like a fun facts Fridays. Relics and indulgences. There was a lot of humor in my Martin Luther book. This is not a book loaded with fun. No. I want to go on to what the pastors did back then and of course it's going to dovetail onto what the passengers are doing now. I just want to read this real quick. And it's a mathematical calculation, which I found really fun, and it really explains, again, what happened when the pastors did try to speak up and who was strong about their faith and who said, I am, you know, I stand here and know, I'm not going to move. You say, we know what followed in Germany, because the 12,000 pastors or 12,000 passengers chose to be chose not to be political and shrink back from taking a heroic stand, the Nazis were successful, and they were able to marginalize and hopefully get in. But it began with, you started with 12,000 pastors, you said there were three things. Well, no, no. There were 80 actually. I didn't know this. I didn't know this until I wrote this book, because I said, the parallel to today is that when the Nazis first took over bahn hoffer and a few heroes said, okay, we as the church must clearly speak against this Nazi regime. They're basically trying to destroy the church. Now it's different than it is here in America. But it's the same concept.

The Reality of Race-Based Criminal Reform in New York

"Final day in New York for a while. I was here on business and just here for a couple of days. What I witnessed yesterday was so wild. I watched a guy over on 48th street, 49th street, go up and down a row of garbage cans in front of a residential block and just empty out all the all the trash cans in a rage, screaming at the sky, and you know, you got to have compassion, but the damage this guy did, somebody's got to clean all that up. People were just watching him. Warily, New Yorkers are so beaten down, I was at a target, I was hearing there were two police officers, two NYPD officers in there talking to the manager about the same two guys that come in every day and just rob the place blind. The guy with the hatchet, the axe wielding maniac at the McDonald's. He's given interviews. He says, I'm not unhinged. The guy who flew into the axe wielding rampage at a lower east side McDonald's who did not did not go to jail because of the no cash bail rules that progressives here in New York have instituted. Alvin Bragg, Kim Fox, good on the list of all these lunatic prosecutors and district attorneys who don't want to incarcerate black men who commit crimes like this. That's what it's about incidentally. It's all about race. They'll tell you it's race because this is criminal justice reform to right the wrongs that have been done against black people in the past.

Let me just be honest with you. I don't need this kind of harassment or harassment from anybody, much less from you, Kurt Schmidt and Tucson, Arizona. But I'm going to take it. I'm going to take it because that's what I signed up for, man, okay? So I'm going to try to pronounce these words correctly. I may fail, but okay, the first one, and Alvin, you did a pretty good job. Oh, thank you. And you're a non Greek as far as I know. But the first one is didi saga Nike. Is cheese. That's where you get diet or pita, didi is cheese and pita is like pie or whatever or spanakopita spinach pie. Didi is cheese. Saga Nike is the type of cheese. It's the kind of cheese that they put some alcohol on it and they light it on fire. And it's really, really dramatic, unless you actually get burned by it, in which case it will have failed to be entertaining. But it's called didi saganaki. Most people just say saganaki, 'cause it's the type of cheese. Okay, then we have the very simple moussaka. People also say moussaka because we're in America and we twist things a little bit. But the good people are saying, Musa, Musa. So we have DD saganaki and moussaka. And then the last one. I actually, I'm not familiar with this, and I think this is, I think, in Tucson, Arizona, where Kurt Schmidt lives. There's some Greek restaurant and they're kind of going off the grid and they're doing kind of American Greek stuff because I think this is chocolate pie.

"I know that open has been your sidekick for years, but you guys were if you guys were to switch. What do you think that Alvin would do well as a host and what would you do well as the sidekick? You know, there are certain things certain questions you have absolutely no answer. I have no clue. I mean, it is so. The whole thing of doing a show like that. There's something about it. I can't even imagine, you know, first of all, when people say sidekick, what is this side? You do what you do. And they say your sidekick, but I mean, when you think of Ed McMahon and Ed McMahon actually didn't do anything. People say, you're the Ed McMahon, but Ed McMahon actually did very, very little. You do more because there's comic bits that Ed might not that we are going to be involved in that Ed would not would do and stuff like that. So I honestly, I have no answer. There's a moment with George Hamilton where he said he wanted to be your sidekick and he and I got into a little tattoo. Oh, yeah, he threatened your whole life. George Hamilton, can you imagine this guy at AJ saying he was a Hollywood icon, and he felt the need. To say, you better watch it Albin, because I'm going to have your job. I'm going to give you a job. But if something ever happens to you, it's kind of like, it's like the first runner up if miss America stumbles and loses her crown, runner up comes right in there. Eric and Albin Share Their Thoughts on the Horrific Trump FBI Raid

"Last night, you saw the video and showed you the video of him of Biden struggling to put on a jacket. And then you heard about the FBI raid on Donald Trump. This is like, you think we're making this up. This happened yesterday that the FBI, okay? These bums, these anti American Stooges, okay? Not the ones who executed the raid, but those who put them up to it. That they did this. This is a slap in the face of Uncle Sam of lady liberty and of every single American. I don't care what side you're on politically. But so Alvin, you had a dream. You don't normally do this. So I thought this is too weird. Let's share this with you. I've had a couple dreams like this in my life. And I just hope this isn't a true dream. It's funny. I'm writing notes on the train coming in to the studio today. And I just wrote on scraps of paper because I didn't have my notebook. But anyway, so yeah, so I go to sleep. And in my dream, and it's very vivid. That's why it was like unusual, because usually it's like you wake up and I can't remember what I dreamed. There was something about a guy. So this is a particularly vivid dream. So in this dream, Joe Biden's on TV and he's handing over the reins of power to a guy that looks like a tin pot dictator. He stressed with the military uniform and he looks kind of like a schmo and a jerk. So he looks like Gaddafi. He's looking like one of these guys. One of these South American dictators. And I'm seeing in the dream that people around the country are watching this. And they're transfer of power to this tin pot dictator. And the reaction I'm thinking like, this is crazy. This is unbelievable, but the reaction from the people watching all over the country was like, well, that's okay. That's okay, as long as he doesn't take away my video games and doesn't take away my abortion rights. And as long as he doesn't take away my cross dressing, you know, children's story hour and things like that. As long as he doesn't touch the things I like. It's okay. I don't care who's running the country. As long as you don't take away the things I want. And I find sacred. You know, take away whatever else. But that's okay. I'm okay with whoever's in charge of the song is I can do whatever I do. Okay, now that the reason when you share that with me, I said, that's so interesting because that's the definition of tyranny, right?

Nausea Harris, number 8. Aaron Jones and Green Bay, number 9. And then you get to number ten on the list from the people in the sport, the top ten players at every position. Javonte Williams came in at number ten on this list, your reaction, your reaction is what? My reaction is it shows you the respect that people evaluators and people who play and coach and GM in this league, the respect they have for that guy as a player because that guy, unlike most of these guys, most of these guys are pretty much Bel cow guys. That dude was a true split. So you're talking about a guy that truly split the carries. And this league has gone that way to where there's different guys that have different skill sets and play in different packages and different situations. But the majority of these guys, if you're going to run it 25 times, they're getting 18 or 19 of those carries. And javonte was truly a 50 50 guy.

The viral story of a bodega worker attacked and assaulted by the boyfriend of a girl who couldn't get the chips she wanted because her EBT card was all was run out. She goes out and outside and gets her boyfriend, you know the story by now. The boyfriend wearing the $350 designer shirt from what I was what I read. So in other words, she's broke, nothing on her EBT card. He's worth a $350 shirt. He comes in and attacks an assaults the bodega owner and as you know by now Alvin Bragg in New York City, the DA there in Manhattan. Of course, soft on crime, no cash bail for anybody else, but for a guy getting beaten up for doing his job and saying, I don't want any trouble, mama. I don't want any trouble, papa. I don't want any trouble gets thrown into the racket into the wall and attacked an assaulted before he pulls out his knife and stabs to defend himself. He gets a cash bail of over $250,000 and sent to Rikers. To await trial before finally a judge said that's insane and lowered it to $50,000 and he was able to get out on bail.

And i'd have to do that too much as well because I just don't want him handy's the way the way that they are always surprised. More people don't do stuff to their trucks. I mean i. I think the tailgate off mine and I built a wooden box that fits rating back bad and makes access to to my equipment so much easier than in dealing with a heavy thick tailgate. "Come up with this design. It looks pretty. Slick a one thing. I was thinking about. So you when you have those two traps in. They're both Connected to the same chain steak d do you have. I'm just trying to visualize that. If you're setting in like a grass sod area do. Do you have to modify the way you you cut out your trap beds in order so you don't have that that chain connecting the to traps sitting on top of the ground. That's right that's you you you basically you make drat beds and and I put the the traps fake onto one or one of them all the other usually or close to it. So it's in the same bed and then of course you're gonna cut a notch go across to the other one and i guess that's another Part of the The stepping guides us. Because i like. I said i always put something between the tracks that sticks up so they won't step there and that is also part of the reason for doing that is because the change the chains gotta be there if i have if i have a spot where i i want both drafts out for lengths of the chains Certainly you're driver in between them and knocks drafts a little bit and get those chains under then. Usually what happens is it would be a piece of sod. That came out of the trap. Bet that i would set in between them to make that guy. Yeah yep that makes sense any other Gadgets are things that you've been invented Help you be come more efficient. Oh well yes. I i built my own Trapping hammer I simply could not find one. That was a comfortable and suitable boston. A lot of hammers. And i find a lot of the trapping hammers with a blade on the fun. Of 'em blade is at an angle and they really don't work as well as having a straightway couldn't find him with a straight blade on it so i made one and in the steel steel steelers. No good on those blades. Founding to get all the one. The one that i make is made from a huge chainsaw by and those aged excellent spring steel at them. And they're the perfect the perfect thickness and I welded onto the fun of three pound sledge. Hammer down to harbor freight for like eleven twelve bucks. And i also by a twenty two ounce framing hammer which is all steel okay as a steelhead steel shank. All one piece a hammer you know cut the framing hammer head off it and and stick the handle in through the three pound slaves hammerhead head then welded in And then you've got an excellent ergonomic handle on a three pound sledge hammer and use that piece of chainsaw blade that's on them through inches wide. Which is what most all of them are growing that off at a sharp angle and man you've got to there. I mean you can't earn it. You know it's not it's not like it's got a wooden end. Fiberglass is that you can eventually work in so those chainsaw bars. They're flexible in. But you still you find. They're they're still stiff enough to to dig through and and No yes the reason. They're flexible made from spring. Steel and spring steel is good as you can get in free. I mean you're almost everybody knows no somebody that's got one already saw shots off to go pilot discarded. Yeah i made my enough a vehicle leaf spring and that's the same way it's it's stiffer but it's i mean you can pound as many rocks as you want and you're never gonna put a chipper a dent or anything in that steel yup goes goes excellent. I did not use a piece of leaf springs. Just because i had the buyers and and that's a little bit lighter. Yeah at least mine is too heavy. I think if i ever get into it in a serious way they'll be some ergonomic issues and that economic issue gets to be much more important to while you'll find out so so alvin some people will know you from Some articles that you've written. I know i've seen a couple of your articles in trappers world. How long have you been doing that. Oh not long. i just I get bored in the wintertime here now. So i've started putting a few of my experiences and thoughts on on paper. And and i like that little magazine trappers world and and You know nobody writes for for the money. Know it's just kind of fun to see something britain and i've enjoyed it. I'm i'm open. That's when yeah good you had one. Everybody thinks you had one that. I think would be good for people getting ready for trapping season. It was about how you prepare your truck to be modified your truck to be more efficient.

"Jenner's but their dogs and And you know. They could pressure on the coyotes out there all year by themselves pretty much and now all of a sudden people walking you all these logging roads and the dogs with them and stuff and in the coyotes feel the pressure and then we started trapping roughly the twentieth raw tober. And we've got two weeks. And then the words are fall of deer hunters and The deer hunters do two things. They pressure coyotes. By the simple fact that than bush women move steadily. They asked today. You may never see him and The other thing they do is they leave. dear bunches and stuff is wards. And if if i've got two craps on this long road and there's a deer parts down at the end of it Those guys don't even slow up. Don't even glance at my stuffing they go down there. I really noticed. I noticed that. Up here during The october moves season when when that move sweet comes like the spotlight. Scouted out where the coyotes were there. They're on the go wherever the piles are yup and then they are on high alert to. It's just it's crazy to see the difference between unpressured guy. Hilton pressure coyotes. So you're so who are effective Trapping season is pretty short and By the time the deer hunter star in and out You'd better have your eye on the sky. Because it's going to snow and i i don't know about up there but down here or what's your snows You can't access a lotta this ground. Farmers don't watch out there right now with a four wheel drive trucking fields and stuff when when when there's a bunch of snow on the ground yeah it's wet and it's not frozen exactly. Yeah i have places. Every year that. I have commissioned this year you can get through it next year you to wet. They don't even go. 'cause you're gonna you'll get a few was our problem is there's a lot of places down further south like where you are where you may have a mix of rain and then and then that turns to snow during the storm and and you may get in you know three or four inches Commonly though here it. It's common to get a foot of snow at a to a storm in even in november. And so you know. There's been times where we've had two feet of snow the first week in november. And then you gotta decide okay. Is it gonna melt. Well we're gonna get that warm up that we usually get or some years it doesn't it it'll you'll never see bare ground until the end of april so your season can be. You can't oftentimes you know you know that you don't decide the end of your season. Mother nature tests. That's right toward i was. I was watching a youtube video this morning. Regarding snyder. kansas strap wind brought us. I i i know i like it. And he he was He was remaking the set out there and every time he put it in your sister big cloud of dust but coming up. And i thought wow what a difference. Yeah he's setting staff barehanded and big dusk others shifter. Yeah it's it's it's totally different. But so so. What's your Approach to fox and coyote trapping like just just in general what what type of sets delight like to make What what kind of Patterns or habits do you do usually fall. Well i guess. The one of the changes that i learned when i came back here instead of doing work was The start using more flat sets and I pretty much now. I still like the put two sets to the location. And i split them between the two. I'll make a whole sat. And i'll make a flat set and i i have reached a point where i blend even the whole sets. I don't have visible dirt pattern. Okay i like the blender the end and I still know you know. It's still use the regular hole. But i keep the.

"Times a year. There's going to be a long delays and that will really help you out helps them out because it saves with paperwork you can fill that out online ahead of time and through the customer portal and then when they get your stuff they kinda sneak it a little bit to the head of the line so moyle dot net check them out and the that's the sponsors thanks for sponsors for continuing to support the show. Tonight's episode so i did a little bit of a change up There's there's a bunch of things that i've got coming in the next few weeks. But i had an interview that i did today. with alvin. Yates and he's a trapper from south western main. And who's just an awesome interview. I i really enjoyed it row. Quality information from a super down to earth guy. And i thought you know. I really want to get this out here so it was kind of selfish on my part somewhat because I you know. I i just. I didn't wanna sit on this one for too long. So anyway we talked for over an hour that's That's coming up right now so at just before we get going a couple of other things that we've got coming on the horizon here. I had a listener newer listener. The podcast giving you pose a pretty interesting question for me. And he was he. You know you listen to this intro song at the beginning of each episode and there are little audio clips from different interviews on past episodes of the podcast. And he's ordering you know. Do you have any way of of sort of a quick g cheat on what where those come from which episode each clip comes from and So i can know. Or what part of the episode. So guy can go and look back and and sort of listening get the context of of what was said and all that and i thought wow that is a really great idea so what i wanna do in future show here sometime in the next couple of weeks is Is go through all those because there are a lot of people that are just tuning in for the first time and haven't heard those so You know if if people are interested in. And they don't have all the time in the world to listen to the two hundred plus two hundred plus back episodes But the here clip about somebody saying something. They come wonder where that's from. That'd be cool to listen to I'm gonna try to go through that. Give you guys a little bit of background on that stuff. And it'll be a good chance to give a recap of some of those episodes. Those are actually all from the first one hundred episodes the second one hundred at some point i was planning on doing another intro song. Some different music and clips from the second hundred episodes. We'll see if we ever get to that but anyway that's coming. I'm going to do something boxes. Because i get so many questions about using boxes on the trap line particularly because my links exclusion devices that i'm required to us here in maine that we're all required us here in maine and a lot of people from other states are actually interested in using them. I or using modified versions of them and initially. I thought that was crazy. But people brought up a lot of good points and so i. I think i'm gonna talk about using boxes That that youtube video one of my martin trap on youtube videos is like over forty thousand views now it. I don't know how that happened. It kind of blew up. And so i get all kinds of questions about those boxes that show in the video. So so Yeah we'll go into that main trappers association convention. We had a nice campfire session with a few guys. And i'm still working on getting that ready for a public audience. So as you can imagine a few trappers around campfires about ten. Eleven o'clock at night Maybe not every word that was spoken was kid friendly. And so there's a few things. I get edited out of there just because i want to keep it Pretty kid friendly show and and we joked that that We should put version behind a paywall or something but anyway i just got to go through that in in clean that up a little bit and there'd be an episode or two we'll be. We'll be Doing that because that that was some interesting perspectives from from a few different trappers. That i'd never talked with before. An and i think you would And one that you have heard from. I think you'll find it interesting. We'll probably do something where we catch up on trapping news a little bit Give you a little update on on. What's going on with trapping today. Store and merch. I get some ideas. Some things for this holiday season this trapping season that i'd like to get up there for folks and also get some feedback on what folks might be interested in seeing and Yeah so that's coming in the next few weeks Speaking of on x. By the way. I i just got a tablet. I've never had one before. I get this kindle fire tablet and you know you talk about you talk about a great user experience if you are using on x. on your phone you want to take it to the next level and you have a tablet download the app when on the tablet and it is amazing having that large screens is in the The convenience of not having to sit in front of your computer. You can sit back you know couch lay down getting ready to go to bed or something and and you can pull that up and you can look at aerial photos just It's really really nice. i've been enjoying that here. The past couple of weeks so Anyway yeah i've talked enough. Let's get into the episode alvin. Yates this guy is someone. I i've I've known about for a few years now. eric. Martin we're at nielsen's shoppers. Weekend a couple years ago and he says he pointed over to where alvin was. Alvin was was talking. I think. Talk with russ carmen or somebody else around there and he says you know who you should get on the podcast. He said alvin is one. Phenomenal trapper that guy is really really good. Trapper knows a lot and he could share a lot of information. And i thought about that. Kept that in the back of my mind. And i talked with alvin a couple of times Just casually and then more recently at the main trappers association rendezvous He did a demo. And i i went and talked with him a little bit after that and And tone head like to give you a call an interview here in the next couple weeks sometime so we set it up and we got it done and let's get into it all right well album. Yates thanks for agreeing to talk with me about trapping here for for a little bit today. Your trapper from western maine rate in..

"And a lot of artists. Feel like they're different from other people. And i don't mean that like i'm better than but just like the they're on their own wavelength and they understand other people who are on their own wavelength and a lot of artists suffer from depression and understand. What that is intuitively. Even if they don't have the language oh well it took me. I mean no. There was still coach. Which i mean i would say that. I was in school with the students with students who lived on star island so died. There was still a wealthy community. Yes sorry star. Island is where Puff daddy lives and will smith and so it was not liberty city and so i was being bused into you know. I was taking the train from liberty city to the school that was small and intimate but also filled with students. Who had been practicing. There are their lives but with tutors and had drivers show up at school to take them home. And i still would have to take a jitney or a bus home. Did you have a kind of pressure that your character does of thinking like only one black person is going to be allowed to succeed here and it's got to be me. Yes not at my art school but in in Undergrad for sure. And even in grad school the more the elite the institution. The more that that's true there was there only graduated two black men in my my acting. Class in undergrad and we started as a class of fifty. We graduated a class of twenty and there were two black men. I was one of them in the play writing program at yale now known as the david geffen school of drama. I was the only black. I was the only black person out of nine playwrights that certainly increases the pressure right. Well it just increases the increases. A whole bunch of things increases the the ability to feel like you're in it for the actual art right or rather. Are you there to represent who you are as a person i mean. There's a reason why i was august. Wilson's assistant because there was no other black playwright in the program. At the time. I will talk a little bit about being august. Wilson's assistant at what point in his career was he had he written Fences the piano lesson. My rainey's black. Bottom where was he he actually. He was working on his last play in the cycle of plays radio golf and that was to premiere at yale. Which a number of his other had done previous before they went on to success on broadway or in other places and i was his assistant and i was a terrible assistant expected to do what. Why do you say you were terrible. Well i'm bad at keeping my own schedule let alone you know keeping august wilson's and so I was sent to sort of help him. Maintain and manage his schedule with both yale and the production and i was terrible at. It was very bad at it. Narda alcorn..

"There hasn't hasn't shifted what has and it absolutely is the what we call. King tide flooding whether whether the full moon and the sea comes up through the street in in places like south beach and is just there even without the rain and then compound that with the rain and full moon right the kind that kind of flooding is almost impossible for those neighborhoods. That are close to the To the ocean into the bay to to keep out to to to combat. So yeah this this slow quote unquote creep towards the elevated areas. That are six feet. Seven feet eight feet above sea level People have been talking about it for years and people have been talking about liberty city for years. But you know it's only now starting to make non-national headlines one of the similarities between you and your character. David is like we said the the trauma. David's mother was crack addicted. she got sober in the series And is really a kind of change person but for you like your mother never made it to that. And she'd died of complications from from aids. And how old were you when she died. Twenty two There's actually two differences. I mean you know. My mother had a crack addiction But also suffered from severe depression and undiagnosed and Was rarely offered in the access or resources to that. And i think david is addicted to a substance but has a kind of addiction to this chaos. Because that's all he knows and so when he's triggered right he goes into this kind of Fugu state where he's just really. He uses all of his passion all of his imagination to make these really big dangerous decisions and that was really important to me. Because i do that more than i've not been. I don't think i have substance abuse. I don't really drink. But i i. I sometimes will throw myself into these. Really scary situations and powerfully chaotic situations in order to make my life feel like it's normal weight. What can i stop you there. Can you give us an example boulevard. You're talking about. Yeah like all of a sudden i need to run a play writing program and Right you know a television show and know for example. I remember one time. I was flying back and forth from miami to new york to la every two days in order to work and that my sound great rate people like that's amazing. That's an amazing life to lead. But i was getting sick. All the time i was i was my anxiety was really high. I wasn't eating very well. I wasn't taking care of myself. I was just throwing myself at the work. And so in a capitalist society we think oh that's normal. That's what you do until you realize that i'm not. I'm not enjoying anything. people are like. Well what do you do for fun. I'm like what do you mean would you talking about like why do you. Why are you skipping out on the vanity fair party with halle berry and like you know there are people there that i just loved in my entire life and then you compound that with like just you know..

David makes man where he's also an executive producer and writer. It's in its second season on own. The oprah winfrey network like moonlight. It begins with a boy growing up in the projects in the miami neighborhood whose neglected by his crack addicted. Mother which echoes mccranie's childhood but in david makes man. The mother is able to get clean. Stay sober david is very smart and as one of two black students in the gifted and talented class at his magnet school manages to get into prep school. Where he's again one of the few black students and he surrounded by students from families with money. The code switching required going back and forth from the projects to school is confusing and complicated in season. Two we fast forward to david as an adult. He's become a successful businessman and is doing the marketing for developer with political aspirations who's trying to revitalize the neighborhood were david grew up but some people see david as just the black face for a development company trying to get zoning permission to tear down the projects build a shopping mall and gentrify the neighborhood with no concerns about displacing. The people who live there. Meanwhile david is still haunted by the shame and trauma of his childhood. Terrell evan mccranie is a graduate of what is now called. Anticipating you know the bear around the corner as Some specialists will say you know you grow up with a lot of trauma. You grew up with a lot of disappointment and and not and not feeling protected. You you kind of think. Oh we'll when this good thing happens it's only in you know it's in service of this really bad thing that's about to come and so i wasn't really spending a lot of time. Just feeling great about the accomplishment My best friend will tell you my best friend. I gotta go home and i left. I left the veteran party with all these amazing things happening in stories to tell but i couldn't. There was nothing. I wasn't feeling excited. "As full other arrests. The most notable of these other than the recent apple daily abed autho was the arrest of forty seven pro democracy politicians for the heinous offence of organizing around of primary elections for the pro-democracy cap before the legislative elections that were to be held in a few months time in in late. Twenty twenty until those were pushed back extensively due to the pandemic so these are purely political offenses with no public order. Element to them absolutely so you recently wrote a book review in which you faulted gently. But i think it's fair to say faulted the two books under review for describing the hong kong legal and constitutional order from the world before the national security law. Now it's obviously not the fault of the writers when they wrote their books. But i think your point was that this is very out of date though. Not fat old and that the world has changed very substantially Is it your sense. In general that people still react to hong kong as a kind of place with a constitutional order when it really is intending more outside. That's right yes that apart from the usual milk toast expressions of concern. That really hasn't been any efforts in quote unquote mainstream analysis. Insofar as such thing exists to grapple with the fact that hong kong's legal constitutional order evaporated overnight and from your point of view what would be the consequences of such grappling. That would have to be a round up getting of pretty much every prior option. That's been made in tons of dealings with hub call in particular whether it's still meaningfully. Distinguishable from dealings with mainland china and it has been some rhetoric about that have been some discussions of following some unspecified actions at an unspecified point in time but nothing on the order of in a completely suspending while a few countries have suspended their rendition agreements with hong kong. Now butts this might also encompass things like can academic exchanges still be held on any meaningful basis. Can the safety off ersan countries nationals be guaranteed if they traveled to hong kong. Those are now all questions that people have to ask themselves so. I'm curious for your answers to those questions. Is there a i mean. There's obviously in some limited sense still a meaningful difference between hong kong and southern china. There are there's a different civil administration right. There's a different different set of laws governing a whole bunch of things but you know. How deep is that at. This point is it is it just residual is it. I mean obviously hong kong people feel different way from from mainland chinese. How meaningful is that difference. At this point there's difference. Insofar as that difference is useful to beijing right from beijing's perspective the ideal end goal for home call estimate call essentially a potemkin says with a potemkin legal system. So it has. It has all the trappings of an ordinary common law legal systems from an ordinary common law jurisdiction bots in reality functions very differently and more impulsively could be displaced at any time simply by assigning session quote unquote sensitive cases to mainland courts and. I suspect that this is precisely what. Beijing is tempting to accomplish in fact just yesterday in the financial times though as a story about how pro beijing legislators are there any other kind. These days objected to the appointment of a senior judge to court of final appeal on the basis that she was married to the former chief justice. Who'd been particularly vocal in defending the independence of the judiciary from beijing's encouragements. So my my sense is that we're already not that far. Removed from the potemkin city and as in fact as some of the authors points out in in the books under review that has already been a judicial retreat within hong kong for some time so absolutely that will be a difference in full as far as benefits beijing but there will not necessarily be a difference in substantive outcomes. So i think we have not spoken since the change of administration in the united states. To what extent has the biden administration articulated a policy with respect to hong kong and to what extent to whatever degree it has. Is that policy different. From the trump administration's policy mean to begin with it seems the biden administration actually has a coherent china policy which is clearly an improvement over came before and certainly the administration seems to be making all the right noises on hong kong then making the statements that one might reasonably expect them to make but in terms of substance of things like sanctions against hong kong government officials all ways to ensure that in the event that say financial institutions compelled to choose between complying with the national security law on complying with us law that they comply with us. Slow i have to say i. I've not seen that much move until not front and do you expect to. Is this the growing pangs of a new administration that it just kind of hasn't gotten around to articulating these things yet or is it the kind of thing where this is an administration that is more prone to human rights rhetoric than the trump administration. So they're gonna sound better but they're not actually going to do very much. That's i really don't know if you'd asked me before. The start of the administration i would. I would've taken a decidedly cynical approach Given the rea- budgets of so many obama era state department pass nell bought. I have been i have to say. Even even the rhetoric the mere existence of the rhetoric counts as a pleasant surprise that may be a reflection of how know my expectations. Aw but now. I i have to say i. I reserve judgmental. Nece at.

"And a nonresident affiliated scholar. At nyu's us asia law institute. He joined the in the virtual jungle studio to talk about the apple. Daily case the other cases like it the implementation of hong kong's new national security law. And what it all means for the hong kong constitutional order. It's the law fair podcast. June twenty fifth alvin chung on apple daily. So alvin get started. What is apple. And why did it shut down. The apple daily was and it is strange using us. Lou was instead of is a tabloid newspaper. A of a shrinking of print newspapers in hong kong and for the last several years it had been the only paper in hong kong that at not succumb to some form of political capture self censorship in the face of encouragement by beijing. What happened over the last couple of days. While the the paper was forced to close off its offices were raided by the national security place. allegedly ov- A number of what appear to be all bets which were published in some cases before the national security law entered into false calling full sanctions against hong kong officials and following that the assets of various companies involved in publishing the apple daily were frozen and the paper was matched full staff of business. The latest on that front. As far as i'm aware is that a an op-ed columnist has been arrested again. Allegedly for committing a national security law related offense and the apple daily is landlords have started reentry proceedings. Now i should add that. The landlord in question is a government owned corporation. And when you say re entry proceedings what do you mean by that. So what's hong kong science and technology pops corporation. The landlord alleged is that apple daily had breached the terms of its lease and therefore it is. The landlord was entitled to take immediate possession of the latte icy option. Yes and so. Should we assume at this point. That apple daily is finished. Or is this a pressure tactic that if it agrees to Not publish certain things it'll be allowed to reform. Is it gone at this point. I would assume that the apple daily at least in hong kong is finished and there is still an apple daily taiwan there were some discussions there about selling it but a as as i understand the that idea was quickly banned but yes certainly in hong kong there are no more opposition newspapers. And i do not expect that the apple daily will be allowed to reform in in any guys whatsoever. So this is a remarkable change because it wasn't that ago that the debate in hong kong was pretty robust. How many opposition newspapers were there. And how recently has this. Crackdown produced you know this kind of result well prior to the imposition of the national security law there was already a creeping erosion of freedom of the press. Full quite a few years even before the nsl. The of a major print newspapers would routinely and gagen self-censorship. Some of them were owned by tycoons with close business patronage ties to beijing Some of them. We knew for a fact spiked session. All pad pieces That considered particularly critical of the hong kong beijing governments but in terms of raids Purportedly under the national security law. This isn't even the first set of raids that that was previous previous raid on. If i remember correctly nick. Hey in relation to pro-democracy ads that were placed with that and again. If memory serves the that was again in relation to events to cut before the nsl was imposed so there is there suddenly a difference in terms of the crackdown. The press. But i i would argue that. It is a matter of degree rather than of chi- So how long ago do you have to go back before you say okay well. Hong kong is a kind of a waste of pretty free speech and has a fairly vibrant press. I mean that was true. Significantly after chinese sovereignty was reestablished right to a large extent. That has been true. That has been growing pressure on newspapers. Journalists since the end of the pro-democracy umbrella movements the end of twenty fourteen. That was when the then chief executive c y lone star ships drumming up this kooky man of hong kong independence and that was when he started specifically targeting will in the in the first instance an undergraduate publication but socially said stand has been a growing trend not only of soft censorship within the press but growing police obstruction of john les and governmental hostility to john. Lewis of more broadly. And how was it. That apple daily was able to buck. This trend was it. Just not important enough for the government to care much about it was there. Did it have some kind of protect ceo. Why why was it until this week. Largely left alone will be apple..
