"And yet there will be technical conversations around the Ferrari powertrain. So all of those things are going to be worked out and that's going to be a bit of a journey. In terms of Williams, a quick mention from one of you guys or your thoughts on this season and then we'll talk about the future. Ultimately, one of real disappointment, they seem to be gathering lots of momentum, a bit like McLaren, it was step by step by step from that awful year in 2019 and a bad one already in 2018. It just didn't materialize. They didn't look awful in testing. I think they had Latifi was at the wheel, the brakes sort of exploded in Bahrain. And that was the only real sort of dodgy looking moment, but they seem fairly solid, and then they've just been off the pace and having to do weird things with strategy. Having said that, I think they've got Alex Albon. He's not had the sort of consistent highs that George Russell was getting in that sort of seat, the previous few years, but he's high moments I've been tremendous. That drive in Australia. We've selected that as one of our best stories to reveal this to the listeners is what we do like top 5 drives of the season. Some really good ones missed out. Lewis Hamilton in Paul Ricard. That deserves to be in there, but we have to pick 5 and we don't do decimal points or whatever. So anyway, we selected Alban's drive in Australia, right? Because it was just, it was just tremendous. You know, he was holding off ocon who was doing that lifting coast like I was talking about earlier. He was keeping pace with the McLaren's. The reason why he was able to do that is because he started right at the back because he's card run out of fuel and qualifying. So disqualifying the results, he could take it easy on the tyres at the start and then gap speed embedded in and he was like, oh, this is what we don't know why, but it worked. And that was the problem. They couldn't replicate it. So a car that wasn't quite as quick and just things just going wrong. They couldn't maintain the consistent high points. Did have Latifi in the other car. He's Formula One career is now over. I think it's ultimately just remembered as one of ultimately lacking lovely man Nicholas as David had a great chat with him at Silverstone or that awful stuff he went through on social media after that crash obviously had nothing to do with what then unfolded in the sham was of the FIA in Abu Dhabi a year ago. We say goodbye to him. They have a big high point was Nick to face coming in to replace Albania. I want to died in Italy. That's a good point. Really shocking. The fact that that happened. And obviously it's wonderful to see recovered so well and so quickly. He was back racing in Singapore. A few weeks later, the hardest race of the year was exit from that race was comedy, but the fact he made the grid was insane. Nick the freaks coming along. He's going to meet alpha tauri next year, AlphaTauri, and I would say we're not really mentioned on this podcast, but they had a very underwhelming experience. They were the biggest leaders in terms of how many places they were unhappy with the car. I know they've talked about that basically the car was a little bit underbaked because they're still basically pushing a potential what they're doing now. They've moved to the biggest scale Red Bull wind tunnel. So I would also contest and it's hard to prove, but once gasly's future layouts where I think his head was gone like he was so quick to complain over team radio and slow effectively and then it also it surely puts the ceiling on Yuki snows, career where we're assuming that divorce is a former rehab formula two champion, but he's going to come in with one race experience and even even Helmut Marco is talking up as a team leader for next year. So that will immediately say something about cenotes standing to them. But a real disappointment for that team. It's known as in comedy crashes as well. I mean, coming out of the pit lane in Canada. That's straight into the barriers. That was bad. That was really bad. Almost as bad as Valtteri Bottas striving into the ball, not crashing, but hitting them all in Miami because he was too busy looking

"Is much better. I understand why one's not using it of course. But very good value commentary. Well, if I don't have that one, but it could be anything in between the Oklahoma. It's actually very similar. Circles. It's actually very similar. Nearly starts before of logo, but oh, Mark Webber, what the fuck are dinosaurs? No better words in the English language. Then with Dutch commentary on an F one clip, I think. I'm very confident. Here we go. It was very wet in that way. How to holy shit what are those of withdrawal? What a car control and Vic page me. Okay. Fuck that shit. That was gonna play with bay Tay. Didn't need it. I thought that was great. So we're riding together, we could only dream Pope and pray that that would attract and kill mosquitos in. The second thing I'm interested in is Pierre gasly. He's on ten penalty points. Now, in typical Alpine fashion, it all happened in every Derby and then he will not be able to start. The next season. So here's the thing, right? Inject do it starts to sound. Wouldn't that rule? Wouldn't it? So here's the thing. Let's go back a step. Mercedes says it referred to wind and finished second in the constructor standings. They're probably not going to finish taking any Y but of course they want that because they get more wind tunnel time and on the budget cap doesn't change. They get more wind tuns since you're like tanking. But not as dramatic, obviously. Maybe some of the lesser teams will be taking. Pierre gasly. He's on ten points, guy on your team next to you, you might be saying, only two points away from a race band. I don't think anyone's copped a race band through the point system because it was invented after a man Grosjean's first lap nutcase incident. Surely, you're going to go out and you're just going to drive off the track constantly. To get those points, miss Abu Dhabi and Norton. We're sure the outputs only opt bars are going to go up to midi's motor home this weekend and go Pierre. Think about or AlphaTauri will just turn a blind eye and just in terms of the pit release. Oh, yes. Whenever you want to go. I don't have to tell you what to do. You're the expert. You go when you like, and then all of a sudden edit goes and two race bad. Surely they will do that in Abu Dhabi because at that point it's not bad. He's off the books. Go straight to el pen and test, I think. AlphaTauri will have a vested interest in making sure that Pierre gasly is banned. Or alpay has a vested interest to make sure that he's best. So what is it two races if he's yeah, no, it's one race band. That's right. So LP will want him to get the band this weekend, so he serves an Abu Dhabi. But alpha tauri won the other way around. I want him to cop the band from Abu Dhabi and then miss whatever the first race is, but right. It's high, it's very high stakes, isn't it? That's the one. You got my interest, maybe I'll trade. Maybe I'll tune in at 11 o'clock on ten balls on Monday evening. To watch the replay. I'm not joking. That is actually shocking. The replay time. Why even bother? 11 o'clock, ten bold. Fairly so good. Could be better. It could be on shake. On all the usuals, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, parlor, wiki feet everywhere that you can find good podcast social media pages and listen wherever you find good podcasts. Spotify. A car radio. Apple music, I think it is now. Maybe it's Apple podcasts, it's a separate app that broken out from iTunes. That is the south palo Grand Prix preview just about touching on enough at the end there to warrant the name, talked about other things, most of the episode, but that's okay. We've only got a few races to go. This year, which is very exciting. You couple. Couple. Couple of reviews. Penultimate race of the year. I can not thank goodness. Get around it. And then we get to the usual the circle of life then continues. We then bring in Rodney and Zach. It'll be a weirdly early Christmas episode. People just wait. Male may not appear. You might know. It might be another voice. He's like, they might be old mace. We don't know. We have not planned this. It's crept up. It's me awake so we don't know. Not like it has. We're not thinking that forward ahead into the future. Certainly not. There you go. So maybe the land and the sponsorship of the right time. "And the other thing that really annoys me about this is that the sport just has no sense of irony because if it had any sense of irony, it would have been Aston Martin that blew the budget by like 10 million bucks despite finishing 9 in the standings. It would have been much funnier as the story. And yet here we are with an actual serious potentially serious implications in this story. Very irritating, very annoying. But this will go forever. You may never end. We might all die before this finishes, so just, you know, just take it one day at a time. That's all we have to drive market because that was the other big thing that happened this week wasn't it. Pierre gasly is going to help. We will form a French super team with Esteban ocon, they hate each other. That's going to be good fun. They've tagged a lot of awkward photos together over the course of the last week. It's incredible. Which means the next is going to alpha tauri despite that he with no disrespect to him being neither young, nor Red Bull driver. I say he's not young. He's 27. He's about to be 28 years old. He's still pretty young, but, you know, he's not Yuki tsunoda young, is he. And it does also mean a bit of a kick to the teeth of all of the Red Bull juniors who are having a crack out there in the bad wide world of formula two. And all my Nick de vries wins is a form of a championship, which is pretty good, I guess. And he's straight in and he's got these Formula One debut. Yeah. I'll tell you what, we all thought Oscar pierce through had a lot of hype around it when McLaren absolutely fell over itself to try to sign him. AlphaTauri of Nick de vries on the basis of quite frankly, one Grand Prix performance. Which is either a strong endorsement or a lot of pressure. Let's retrospectively, let's find out what happens this time next year. Talking about Cal stefanovic show. So it's going to be, it's going to be interesting. Okay, we'll be interesting. Because you'll be up against Yuki tsunoda as well, is the established driver there now, I guess, but he's coming in as a more experienced driver. But on the other hand, I mean, he did have that good debut in Monza, but it does also sort of struck me today I don't know if this means disrespectful to either driver, but it does have shades of Brendon Hartley around it, doesn't it? Like he rocked up as a LeMond winner and wick champion, I think. He certainly is in any case. And then just didn't really cut it against gasly. Now I need to raise a little bit more embedded in Formula One through Mercedes a little bit he's done all those practice drives and has now done an actual Grand Prix, but it was one Grand Prix. You know, it doesn't always translate does it like formula E title, formula two title couple of years ago now. There is a lot of high random. You're right, there's a lot of hype. We've got a lot of drivers next to your rocking up with a lot of hype to do well. And that could be ugly. Now very much. And yeah, it is shocking that you do have in this sort of reshuffle of this is a Mercedes junior. That's his malt is why it's quite telling that the best candidate for one of the most prized Red Bull sites on the grid has been given to a Mercedes prodigy. It's quite staggering, but this is the new normal. We all are having to get used to. Well, our Red Bull prodigy has gone to Williams in Alex Albon and another one's gone to Alpine and then the last one who was went to Alpine they went to McLaren and having sacked and the other ones are Aston Martin, so it's sort of like the young driver programs are all a bit cool. Now, I think that's why Alpine's talking about getting rid of it. 'cause it's not good. I never end up where they've been to go, so it's all a bit confusing. But these of course means, I mean, they're always meant to cement this weeks ago, but he's confirmed that he's used his own human mouth to say the horrible words that are Daniel Ricciardo won't be racing next year, not in Formula One. He says not in anything, in fact, he's gone out of his way. He's got out of his for people commenting on Facebook, listen carefully. He's got it out of his way to say he's not going to be a bathroom. Please stop saying he's not going to be there. You might watch it, but he's not going to be racing in it. It's the said no. He said no. But he won't be racing Formula One a that turns out in 2023 because it doesn't want to, well, I'll say it's available. We just want either of them. We just want to go to hassle Williams teams. And he says he's aiming now for 2024, but I mean, it is a risk. This is an enormous risk, and as you said earlier, this is sabbatical asterisk at the end of this year. Yeah, big time. So yeah, even the whole, I'm not sure what you heard in Suzuka Michael, but it's just we're all relying, but best case, the best case scenario when we heard everything kind of occur. We thought that he's going to say it McLaren. Okay, Nara, Matt will clearly has no other choice but to go to Alpine. Okay? Maybe maybe he locks America, so maybe Haas will actually do him some good. So now we're resigned to the fact we'll be quite happy if he ends up a reserve driver at Mercedes. But I don't even know if that's ever going to be. A possibility for him. By then. It's weird because have you asked me like two weeks ago, I would say that's ridiculous. It's a wacky rumor that's been started, I don't know, in some way. Same people he says he's gonna go to bath test, I guess, probably saying that. But he said it in Singapore, even same Mercedes obviously. But he said that being a reserve driver is a realistic option for him. He's really for a driver who has over the last month since he's been sacked and even beforehand when it was clear he was brought by must be included in him that he was probably going to be sacked. Who's gone out of his way to not say the wrong thing to not mislead at least he has left it vague from time to time as everyone falling on does, but he's never done my Sergio. Why don't your parents do what he's going to make? You admitted these outright lies to questions. You never done that. As far as we know, that.

"So when you look at the final standings of the constructors championship, who would a thunk it, McLaren ahead of Alpine a 129 plays a 125 coming out of Singapore. And nicely in the interviews afterwards, where below bromance between Lando and Ricciardo, but of course, that won't last very long with two alpines, retiring with engine troubles. Jess, what if Oscar piastre was watching? The race today. I'm sure he was. Well, where was he? Not in the Alpine garage. I'm sure. It was one of those days where everything went right for McLaren and everything went wrong for Alpine. So a mixture of it was down to performance, but I think a lot of it was down to luck. So they chose they were the last team, I think, to switch to slicks. And they were able to do that because the safety car fell at the right time. Had that not happened, which we love, what ifs in Formula One when we're talking about things like this, but that could have gone the other way. But yeah, they were counting their lucky stars today that Alpine had such a shocker. Unfortunate engine problems, but we're at the end of the season where we're kind of expecting expecting those things to happen. So yeah, great result for great results for McLaren. There'll be thoroughly pleased. But to your point, Martin, one Grand Prix does not make a Grand Prix driver. So whilst Ricardo is happy, I'm sure, and the team will be overjoyed with the points what they've got. I think the problem still stands is he qualified P 17 was P 16 with Russell's demotion to the pit lane. And obviously did end up much higher and brought home some well, you know, well wanted points for McLaren, but are we going to see this moving forward? Probably not. Can I be mean about him some more Martin and please do? Yes, so obviously he got into position behind Norris by that final safety car period to allow about the McLaren to sort of stay out and pit later and everyone out of sequence and that enabled him to jump a few places. And then he is on a soft tyre, the only run on a soft tyre, Norris is on the medium. So the Pirelli estimated the offset between the tyres was 6 tenths, so that means a medium is 6 tenths slower than a soft tyre that Ricardo is on. So they pit on lap 36, both of them and there's only one lap from then on to the remainder of the Grand Prix where Ricardo is faster than Norris for the rest of it. He's about a second, a second and a half slower than Norris pearl up. So if you add that second, this is silly mask. But if you add that second, plus the 6 tenth tyre offset between compounds. He's arguably a 1.6 seconds a lap average slower than his teammate. So yes, although they finished fourth and 5th, the pace is as bad as we've seen throughout any point of the season. So Ricardo's popular, we've seen what he can do before, but as Jess said, it's a good headline result, but it doesn't mean we can draw out everything we've written about something. And yes, he's, you know, he's going to be a huge casualty that he's not a McLaren next season, because again, and okay, yes, you can bring in that, you know, he didn't get the upgrades for this weekend and Norris did and if you're assuming that the upgrade is an upgrade and a considerable step forward that explains some of the gap. But that's a lot of time to lose pearl up to your teammate. He came home 32 seconds behind Lando Norris and that's with safety cars bunching the pack up. Lando Norris is quickest lap today was a one 49.2 Ricardo's was a one 51 zero zero and that's their fastest lapse of the race. So such a big difference between those two teammates. But the best result of the year so far for Lance stroll, bringing home the Aston Martin in 6th. Keeping out of trouble, keeping out of the barriers and bringing the car home both Aston Martin with Vettel in 8th as well. So a bit of praise for Lance stroll, I think. There's a period of time when Vettel was holding off Max Verstappen. That was an interesting part of the race, couldn't do it towards the end when max would get ahead of both Vettel and Hamilton mainly because of Hamilton. He was so close to taking a lunge down the inside of Vettel, decided to opt out of it. And then that let Verstappen passed. There was a good part of the race earlier as well, where Alonso was a bit of a roadblock and Verstappen couldn't get behind until Alonso's Alpine engine expired the same for Esteban ocon as well and when they asked Alonso after the race as well about some of the upgrades and how the car felt. Yeah, you're asking someone who's not going to be driving that car next year, how he feels like the up. He was like, yeah, it's fine. Everything's okay. The car was fine. He doesn't care, he's not driving that car. Next year. So Pierre gasly came home tenth and getting the final point and for alpha tauri, but poor old Yuki with a team next year. He's got his drive, but absolutely shunted today. And he looked really frustrated with himself for doing that. In really difficult conditions, but who came home 11th not scoring a point. The performance of Valtteri Bottas and the Alfa Romeo. After amazing start to the season, the season is definitely ending with a whimper rather than a raw Kevin Magnussen we've talked about getting that flag to come in and fix that frontal wing which didn't look too bad to me. And Mick Schumacher really battling for his career and a seat and a drive next year. I think but a gutsy performance. Today, but ultimately, again, finishing over a lap down in 14th and George Russell. Fastest lap of the race today. Final classified finisher. In 14th starting from the pit lane, taking a fourth set of a bunch of engine components. But George, oh, George. I think the best thing George did today was use the word crikey over the radio, which seems to have been picked up by plenty of memes. But apart from that, he went to the slicks earlier than everybody else. He was running last, he had to have nothing to lose. And he was pretty defiant as well when he had terribly was three seconds off the pace of the next car up the road. Stuck with it. And those dry tyres did come to him. What did George say after the race? Not our finest weekend. He said, but the team did a mega job to resolve our quality issues which combined with our pace in the dry is a big positive. In the long and demanding season, we're bound to have one that doesn't go our way. So once again, George Russell, the ultimate team player always talks about we not. Yeah, it's a one off. And not long to wait till he's back in the car. And racing again, any thoughts on the drivers that I've just mentioned guys feel free to chip in if you've got some thoughts. I can offer a flippant remark on George Russell, which is obviously when he was put onto a slick. He came out of the pits and did that amazing slide at a turn three. I was watching it, so I lost this. This is absolutely spin, but it caught it back. So I trust it to the good people at the Internet to slice teriyaki boys, that theme song from Fast & Furious Tokyo drift over that because that was a proper bit of car control. I rated that. The fact that the fact he bought it back and still pointed in the right direction was proper proper indeed, right? That's our show for today. Now we want to hear from you. "He doesn't have the same high per se Oscar pierce who does in terms of so a year or two or three Williams isn't the worst thing in the world for him. So I don't think he's going to be sing out on much. So at least he's in the system and then you know he can grow and develop and he could be like the Daniel Ricciardo sort of effect where he was good in the junior formulae but F one. It was the category that clicked for him really at least when he was a Red Bull drive. So it could be, yeah, it could be the right place for our time for old Jack, so that would be someone who really, you know, in terms of it's always nice to have two Aussies on the grid. Would be nice to have three. Let's not get gravy, though, because yeah, that could be, that could be 2024. Well, let's just start with two for now. I mean, we're at the moment, we really only got one. It's one in one out. It's like a clock. Like a really awful club. So we don't know what's going to happen. But it would be interesting for Jack because Williams is still keen on Logan sergeant. If you can't race next year, they want him to race the following year, assuming he has a good F two season, maybe even wins the thing. Yeah. So then that would maybe mean Jack's there on a one year deal. The question mark then is over who Alpine actually gets, it's a weakened situation. I don't know if you sort of feel the same way, but on the one hand it feels like they actually isn't that much talent out there to feel safe. You got a couple of two guys. Yeah. You've got your other random character like Nick to raise a sort of inserted himself here and that's pretty good. But then like we're still talking about Nico hulkenberg, who don't get me wrong, had a great career, but had a great career. It's happened. It's finished, but we're still talking about drivers like that. Even Antonio giovinazzi, who I liked and think he actually deserved a bit of a longer opportunity, but you know, it's not like he was making such a great case that he absolutely should be back on the Formula One grid either. So on the one hand, you sort of got a weak field, but on the other hand, if you did have someone like Jack do and rock up at Williams, there's every chance you might only get one year and then not find another seat because there are enough like average drivers making a good enough case for themselves that there aren't enough seats. True, but then if Jack uses that opportunity to go, well, this is how good I'm bloody am. You'd be mad not to keep me or to or to poach me. So he's got to be in the system. It's just like, it's like an IFL coach. I think James heard there's more. I think he's even on the Alpine wish list of potential candidates to fill that state. And if you're talking about there's not enough depth in the junior formula, which I disagree with. I'm actually very surprised that lame Lawson is not in the mix. For AlphaTauri, graduation, for example. So that surprises me a little bit. But yeah, I think there's enough talent on the grid to be filled by your F two types. And look, I'm not going to discredit IndyCar, right? I think that you could easily get all other drivers of higher stock on board. Yeah, I just found a bizarre is more eligible for super license points that Colton heard but he's not even in anyone's right up. And I think he's progression into IndyCar has been far more impressive, but nevertheless, yeah. It's an interesting, interesting time. It is interesting, isn't it? And it does make you wonder the Nick devries thing. Now he's another driver we should talk about here because he's on everyone's list all of a sudden he's on Williams lists. He's on Alpine's list. He's now apparently the favorite to go to alpha tauri replaced Pierre gasly. But he's kind of broken the business model a little bit because he's not come immediately up through F two. Obviously he's an F two champion a couple of years ago, but he's gone by formula E and he's a driver that realistically was written off. Before this year there was no chance he's getting to Formula One he had a shot at Williams and at Alfa Romeo for this season and Williams went for Alex Albon and Alfa Romeo and for Joe grand you in both of them worked out obviously. So that's no knock on that decision making. But all of a sudden is injected himself into the conversation for good reason because he had a great race in Italy. A great race on debut sudden race on debut. But it does make you wonder, every time we hear someone say, oh, like the F two greeted schnitzel very impressive, it's very weak greed, all these kinds of things. How seriously can we take it? Because as you sort of said earlier, sometimes drivers do click in formula and you can't take a punt on a driver happening to get all of a sudden much better and if one. But it does make you wonder whether actually we're bypassing too many drivers because sort of the vibe of the greed in F two. He's not so good. Reading, yeah, reading too many articles. I don't say we don't respect you, but in your posture, but I don't. Yeah, just yeah, you can't be riding off drivers in the press. And yeah, it's very strange that people get sucked into this vortex of if they've got good headlines around them, therefore they're going to be stand at driver because it's not always been the case. Not always been the case, but yeah, I think many seasons before it was written off too many drivers. Drivers of hung around for too long as well. So there's talent if you look hard enough and just ignore the hype and look at the raw facts and the raw data. This is why maybe this is why I'm anti anti hero because I just don't, if I look at the data, if I don't believe the headlines, if I don't say Lee diffie screaming about how good Colton herder is and every IndyCar driver just having Carlton's back. Very admirable. But if I'm looking at the data, I don't see it. I just don't bloody say it and I'm not going to get sucked in for it either. I'm not going for the popular route. Now is the time for the king to take his rightful place thrown in the Hall of Fame. Sit on his king of Thrones. I'm KB. That's my time. Books of neutrals. This break is brought to you by liquor land. "And he just wasn't doing it. Now he's unlucky in Bahrain, Oklahoma tapped him around at the start, actually ends up having a big impact on his result at the end, right? Miami, crashing into Sebastian Vettel, that was that's why he's rankings loadouts. Why is down in 19 in the pure numbers average, right? Because it was just a lost his head at that point. And then you have a massive accident again in Monaco. Is the Saudi situation right? You can't crash massively like that and not let it affect your score. And there was big pressure on him, and I think the team were very honest about that is that we have to see something soon. He has to he has to finally step up, or he was in danger there. He did do it. He was brilliant at Silverstone. It would have been a very unfortunate if Max Verstappen's defense and his sort of half half attacking had all gone wrong. What's interesting there is that I think it does unfortunately show what kind of Schumacher he is. I don't think that's would have defended as he did against his dad. And also Michael would have just gone in a minute. What are you doing? I'll have you off the road and it will be your fault. But Nick wouldn't have done that. So he sort of interesting there. But still, let's take the positives as I've said, we don't think there are any bad formula on drivers, they're just different rates of good, right? At least he has seemed to have stepped up. He is made the most of some of those opportunities and well done to him. Yeah, I thought his Austria weekend was very good. What he was qualified well, then in the sprint he was kept saying that I'm faster and faster, and there was a little bit of needle there, actually, between the two half drivers, but yeah, and then I think executed it very well in the race and you look up performances like that and you're like, okay, you can do it. That really, I think, has proven a lot of people wrong about sort of saying, oh, is he ever going to score points? And what is he doing? So I think now in the second half of season, he's got to really get the update from spar onwards on that car and really just sort of say right, this is my seat. This is why I'm on the grid. This is what I can do. And deliver it week in week out because we've seen glimpses of it this season, but it needs to be a bit more consistent. A Pierre and Yuki at alpha tauri, how are they doing? And they seem to be having fun if that counts for anything. But what have they got to do in the second half of the season to make this a good year do you think? Lots as a teammate powering now. They're collectively bottom bottom as gasly 16th tsunoda 19th. Tsunoda, some massive shunts and big arrows even at the weekend spinning over hungry. Okay, it's sort of an anonymous one, but your ship's three places and you shouldn't have done it. And in the same way that Norris and annihilating Ricardo helps his hopes his order, the fact that das liens and sonoda competitive are all can flip quite often in what is, let's be honest, it's a really bad car with the ATO three. That's what bought them both down together. The fact that gasly a race when it hasn't distanced tsunoda, but cenote is not having a great season either. So they've held each other a down. What they're finding is that it's a far less consistent cards what they had last year and gasly compared it to 2018 when he was with Toro Rosso. And some weekends, the car would absolutely be hooked up and perfect, and we saw that in the second race that season in Bahrain where he finished fourth and everyone went, oh, this is Red Bull's great new hope and Honda of finally made it work and everything. And the highs are high, but the lows are pretty low, and they're more regular. And yet, we haven't seen that kind of Pierre himself like he's very pleased with the job he's done this year. And he's trying to be more and more of a leader if I answer. But they are really, really struggling. They waited for so long for those updates and put them on the car, and they've not really done a lot. And there's still really confused by what it's doing. Sonoda, he actually asked him in France when we spoke, so what would you rate your season out of ten? And he said, I'll give it a 7 before, he said, I'll give it a 7. But before silverson and Canada were too bad weekends, he gave 8.3, which is quite precise with him. By wonder what now after France and Hungary as well because it's sort of, yeah, it's a bit of a slide and you're kind of wondering at the beginning of the season. You seem far more consistent like you knew a bit more what he was doing, which is something he's said himself. But now we're sort of seeing a few of those arrows slip in again. I think with gas these leaks, the inconsistent car is reflected in his driving and unfortunately that reflects poorly on him like, for example, making that track limits mistake in qualifying in Hungary, right? But with sonoda, some are the areas of being shot. It was just straight out of the pit lane. He's really poor, like really, really poor. And then Tapping his teammate around at Silverstone. It's like, what saves him really is that we tend to say three years in the third season, you expect a massive step from the driver. So if this is still happening in a year's time, because we expect him to carry on an AlphaTauri, let's face it.

"I haven't seen very much of the footage. The problem I have with it is the safety aspect, which is that I was at turn 13 for FP one on Friday, where there were drone cams and there is a reason that in general use drones are not flown very near things and drones have got like sharp, very fast spinning blades and for them to be flying around like that. I wasn't sold on the idea. Because they were dashing around right above where we were and it wouldn't take very much for drones to fall out of the sky and hit a driver on the head mid chicane and cause also problems. I'm sure the FIA have thought of this in FOM and all, you know, sure everyone's thought of that, but they're not foolproof and I just think for the sake of an extra bit of footage maybe it's safe and not to risk that. You say with I'm sure they thought about it, but then they probably should have thought about what happened in Abu Dhabi 2021 being possible and they clearly didn't. It's worth it. It's worth pointing these things out. Luke, what's your thoughts on the drain cam? Can I give a simple answer? Yes, please do. Yeah, it was cool. I think it needs to be a bit better. Alpha tauri did some really cool stuff with some drawings for their lunch a few years ago. Talking about that's what I'm talking about. That's when it's done really well and obviously that's a closed circuit and it's for filming purposes. But as we said, it can work. We've seen it in other series. Safety aspect definitely something that needs to consider and be aware of. But hopefully it can be a cool broadcasting advance for F one. Okay, what I'm going to group Lee congest together in the positive camp and Megan you're in the negative camp. Where I also am and where is the entirely correct place to be? Don't do it again, F one. Thanks very much. It was really nice to see what I presume was the WRX track that Barcelona had a few years ago. We saw it again and repeat. It didn't add anything as just said it just made me feel queasy as does the helmet cam at that times. I don't think it's wonderful. Don't get me wrong, that is brilliant, but what I would suggest is not to use it as part of the live element of it, save it for replays. The problem with that obviously is I know that recording and broadcasting different camera features very expensive, very difficult. But anyway. But I think the formula E helmet cam is brilliant. Like that is sharp, it's clear, it's really good. So again, they just need to work out how to get it on that on that same level. We polled the Twitter audience. We got over a thousand votes and I can tell you Alex that's 63.1% are fans of drone cam. So I think you just gotta you guys are just gonna have to embrace it because it's coming. I feel like this is the future of broadcast like they're trialing it with other NFL, they're trying it with football, which again is more static. I grant you and it's on a smaller playing field. But I genuinely feel like it's like four K cameras, right? This is the future of broadcasting. You're right, they have to get it right, but I feel like this is going to be a you're going to be massively outvoted in terms of whether or not this is coming to F one or not. Yeah, I think as well just on the helmet cam. With what you said about doing it separately, because sorry to bring up bikes again. But in moza GP, you can watch whole races from the helmet cams or they've got a new shoulder can, which they've been using, which is really cool. So maybe something like that would be a good compromise for people who do like the helmet cam and people who don't. Well, on that, I'll be honest, I'm not going to stop going on about how it's a bad thing because eventually if a drone falls out of the sky, Blake chops someone's arm off, that's going to be a massive lawsuit. If it falls into the driver's head out of control, then I just think it's going to be worth it. I take the point that it can look good. It didn't hear, but I still think it's a bad thing. But as we say, good on them for trying something because for how many years did Formula One just do absolutely nothing to help fans even understand the racing better. So fair enough. Let's speaking of fans, let's come and talk about a really serious issue for this weekend, which was the problems that a lot of the fans at the tracking Barcelona encountered. And this is actually got a really serious element underneath it regarding what could potentially happen to this race in the future because essentially F one has promoters on notice that they risk losing their races. Their places on the calendar if they don't keep up with what F one itself considers to be the best. And this is actually sent us on three key areas. That's what they offer to the public in terms of racing, the track infrastructure and management of the events, Stefano domenicali, F one CEO, saying in an interview earlier in this year, it's not enough to have pedigree anymore. You also have to demonstrate that you were keeping up. Now Megan and Luke, obviously, you guys were there, so I think it's really important that you talk about it first because as we discussed before coming on air, lots and lots of people getting in touch, sharing their views on social media about how much they affected they suffered considering not able to get hold of water and very easy in the burning sunshine. So mega maybe you could just sort of sum up what the issues were at Barcelona this weekend. I think the main issues I've seen people discussing, one of them was around our access to water, so a lot of the food and drinks stands. It's one stand for food and drink,.

"Also sport magazine. I'm Martin Lee. And this is the auto sport podcast. Well, that was epic and I'm not just talking about David avali, pit lane interviews. I'm getting my request in early for him to do more of those. He brings the energy from his commentary. Now to sprint race weekend, 5 red flags in qualifying. Conditions variable changeable will say. The Emilia romagna Grand Prix sprint race was well and truly shaken up the grid I should say, shake it up with Max Verstappen on pole. For the first time as defending world champion. Charles Leclerc's Ferrari lining up alongside him with his, oh, just the minor matter of a 46 point lead over Verstappen, even if he is in damage limitation mode this weekend. Leclerc is in the right place. McLaren should be delighted with Lando Norris in third, even happier will be huss with Kevin Magnussen in fourth, joining me on the podcast. Today is also sport dot com. Editor, Hayden Cobb, well that was a bit of a qualifying session, a long one. It really was, I think it's probably going to be the longest session of the entire weekend, which is a bit odd when you think it's a sprint weekend, and that was just qualifying. Yes, it was 5 red flags across the sort of three mini segments of qualifying an hour of 40 roughly all told. Yeah, it was a long stint for everyone involved. As I saw someone on social media say, quite inconsiderate of any racing to get in the way of what was basically one long red flag session. I told you the grid was looking different though Fernando Alonso alongside Daniel Ricciardo for 5th and 6th Perez down in 7th Bottas in 8th even though he retired the car in three Vettel in 9th and Carlos Sainz intent, even though he never even took part in the session. The two Mercedes lining up 11th and 13th for Russell and Hamilton respectively. Where shall we start? Let's talk through the red flags actually because this was a session which I've seen people saying afterwards that Max Verstappen locked in to poll. I disagree. I'll tell you why on that right. First red flag, Alban's exploding rear brakes, any muse online or to sport dot com about what's causing that because this is starting to become a bit of a Williams pattern. Any idea how they said afterwards, I've not seen the quotes or anything. Have you seen anything to do with what caused that? So they're still doing the formal investigation, but it very much seems like you said about the pattern of what they had an identical issue in pre season testing in Bahrain, which was happened to Latifi at the time. And it sort of strokes incredibly quickly as in the team don't even really get too much warning of it. The brake temperatures go through the roof and suddenly it's on fire and it's the rear brakes in particular, which is exactly same thing that happened to Alban in Q one of qualifying. He was about three or four corners into a push lap and then would you know it, the right rear brake is quite literally on fire and then explodes. It seems to be if it is the same issue, the sort of caked in brake drum causing this friction catching something and generally the temperature within the brake drum going sky high. And before they know it, it's in flames. It's always very visually eye catching. It was in Bahrain and even more so this afternoon because it literally has the TV cameras caught it. It literally exploded in a fireball that sent bits of carbon fiber and a bits of Williams cars sort of everywhere. And there were some fantastic shots of a bit of pace on fire run over by one of the McLaren's. It was thankfully nothing else happened after that. It was very, very great visual to grab. But yes, that was the first red flag. And it sort of carried on from there in various amounts. I really did say he couldn't set a time he did three laps in total. Also knocked out in the Alpine Esteban ocon and also in the Williams Nicholas Latifi and the two alpha tauris. Now that's going to be a big, big blow to go out in Q one for gasoline and sonoda. Because earlier in the season, they've shown real signs of pace, any clues yet as to where that pace went in imola. Yeah, strange one. I think they really misjudged the Q one time is with these sort of red flags in The Rain coming in and out. I mean, they were on track and on the right tyre, IE the dry tyres. So they didn't sort of mess up strategy wise, just pace just wasn't there in that particular session. They had no K one practice session on the Friday. And of course, that's all or anyone had because of the sprint race format. So maybe they just didn't get the tire in the window and you know, obviously with time ticking and Q one, there's no second chances. And granted sonoda did miss out by 0.004 seconds. To Lewis Hamilton being knocked out in Q one of all people. So they would just fractionally off it, but yeah, I mean, those are the fine margins in Formula One and that's why they were both out in Q one. And then going into Q two, so Carlos Sainz had set a pretty decent lap. He was two tenths off of Max Verstappen in the final Q two timings, but he was on a second flying lap. They asked him to do a second push lap. And when I say that he was finished tenth, that's because his time was good enough to get through to Q three. He just couldn't take part in that because he bend it and after the qualifying session, he seemed really frustrated. And I've seen some feedback afterwards, maybe Ferrari fans, I don't know, saying, he just can't catch a break. He's so unlucky. Yes, but Australia was his doing. And technically today was his doing. I mean, he got onto the slippery painted white line, and it spun him round, so yeah, I don't want to be hard on the guy, but that's two mistakes in a row. And I think he's equally frustrated because he said afterwards, he wasn't even pushing that hard, even though it was a second push lap. He had plenty in reserve, and you hear him on the radio back to the team, just apologetic, and yeah, he went into the weekend signing a new two year deal with Ferrari, but look, the more this goes on, the more he's going to be.

"P 7 Lando Norris for McLaren if you're mad at me about Esteban ocon akan pronunciation. You're in the wrong place. I'm just going to say that all year. Although, feel free to correct me and I'll try my best, I guess. P 8, so our P 7, we got Lando Norris for McLaren, P 8 Pierre gasly P 9 Kevin Magnussen for Haas and then all the way back at P ten getting only one point on the day you had Lewis Hamilton. A weird, humbling start to the year so far for Lewis Hamilton. He's just happy to be around and hanging around the top at all in Formula One. Here are the constructors standings right now. You've got Ferrari in first place with 78 points. Behind them, Mercedes and second with 38 points, Red Bulls and third right now at 37 points. The top two teams right now in Formula One are Red Bull and Ferrari, Red Bull had problems finishing the race during the first race of the year, but in Bahrain. But I don't know, man, I see a world where something's going to happen if Ferrari along this incredibly long season where it's going to be very quick that at some point, they're going to be closer and more neck and neck. But the two top teams right now in Formula One are very clearly Ferrari and Red Bull. Then you got Alpine in fourth place with 16 points. Hass is in 5th place with 12 points. Alfa Romeo in 9th is our Alfa romeos in 6th place with 9 points and then alpha tauri is in 7th with 8 points and then McLaren has points on the board. They got 6 points there and 8. Aston Martin and Williams have no points on the year so far and for Williams Nicholas Latifi had a horrible, horrible weekend at crashing qualifying. Then a crash again on Sunday during the race and I'm really curious if Williams can do anything to be relevant at all the entire year..

"But what were your thoughts on Pierre gasly because he was up there in both sessions today, P four in FB one? I think it's P three and FB two. I spoke to him after FP two, and he seemed like he had really, really enjoyed driving the car around there saying how cool it was, how much he enjoyed the high-speed nature of it. What do you make of his performance stage? Do you think that as we always say? It's a Friday. So be cautious with our comments and predictions. He himself said that he's feeling confident going into qualifying tomorrow but Sunday is where they tend to need to do more of the walk. But what do you reckon? Yeah, I mean, another strong single lap pace from alpha tower, especially gasly. I mean, he's found a real sweet spot with that car this year, especially on Saturdays. Consistently up there. In qualifying, it's kind of almost his seat has almost been a little bit hidden by the fact that Sundays have been difficult for him to bring home the results for a multitude of reasons over it's been accidents he's been involved in that weren't necessarily whether it's been poor strategy choices, whether it's been the car not looking off his tires as well on a Sunday as it can the Saturday. So it's been a bit of a strange season for an impressive season, but a little bit of a strange one. But I think again, that car seems good on single lap pace. I expect no reason to think you can't follow this through into tomorrow and beyond. But again, it will be down to how is that how is it alpha tauri able to look after its tires over the longer stints? Because you saw in Qatar, started right up there, potentially could in theory have led the first lap if he'd made a better start than Lewis, but, you know, just tumbled, tumbled down the order because it couldn't look after the tires. Let's now talk about the incident that we did see today Charlotte crashing out at times 22 23. I think it was. He's had the medical checks and he is all clear in terms of that, but he did it like a hefty shunt. Talk us through what happened there because there was some concern throughout the day about those corners and people saying that that's the part that could catch drivers out. Yeah, I think when you look at what happened what's happened today and I think in formula two, it's true as well. If you have an instant here, I think drivers either don't crash at all, or if you do have a crash, it's going to be massive. I don't think there's going to be a small. I don't know if you can make a small mistake here and have a small instant. If you make a mistake here, it's going to end up in a big crash and that's exactly what happened. With Charles. I mean, the good news to him is Ferrari did the examination and the chassis and engine themselves look okay. So beyond what we can call superficial damage of ripped off suspension and wings and tires and bodywork and floor and everything actually the chassis and engine are fine. So just a classic case of a small mistake here has heavy consequences, the cars are traveling at such high speed, very heavy cars as well. And that's what happened that corner. So he just went in the back seam to get a bit least he tried to correct it and it was gone. And I think that would be the tale of tomorrow's drivers get nearer to the limit that as you try and push it, try and find where the limit is, if you overstep it, unfortunately, you ever step it and you're often in the barriers and it could be day over. So just unlucky, but like all these things better for that to happen on a Friday. Absolutely. I was just about to say that. One of the things that we did see and also hear drivers talking about after the sessions today were the closing speeds and the potential for incidents when drivers are coming around doing their first option. We have the slower cars. What are your thoughts on that? Do you think that we will probably hear tomorrow that some code of conduct they were saying on the commentary has been agreed between the drivers and between the FIA? Well, there'll be a driver's meeting tonight and guarantee the issue will come up because it's quite terrifying. I think that was that one lap from Lewis today where he came from the final sequence and then 5 or 6 cars. All darts around massive closing speed. And it only takes one driver to pull out not being sighted behind. And it's a big crash. So it will need discipline from the drivers, but it will need good guidance from the engineers as well because they're blind corners the visibility and mirrors is very limited. They are relying on them getting warnings about what's happening, but when we have things like this, if you go back to Austria, you know, you have these code of conducts and agreements and people bust them and jump out of the queue. And if you've waited three laps to get your tires into the right window and you've got one shot to go, you don't want to get your tires cooling down. We're waiting for 5 cars ahead of you to get through the final corner and potentially people jumping you. So I think the only one may be good thing that could work in its favors about the lap so long that they're not going to be as bunched up as they are in Austria, for example, where there's actually very little track. Same as Monaco, short tracks means the cars get more bunched up. So it may be the teams take it sensibly and space themselves out, but I still think when it gets towards the end of Q two or Q one and Q two, I think things could get quite frantic and it will need good discipline from both the teams and drivers to avoid any signs of trouble. And I wanted to also touch on before we wrap things up. How important do you think that this qualifying session will be in terms of the potential overtaking opportunities that we may or may not see when it comes to Sunday because we saw Max Verstappen wanting to focus more on the quality pace? Do you think that that would be the approach of many of the teams based on what we saw today? It's actually quite a hard one to judge because on paper there's no heavy braking zones is not very wide doesn't seem anywhere obvious that on a regular track you think, yep, you can overtake into here. But very, very long straights, and we know how draggy these current Formula One cars are. If you look at Sochi, for example, that run down to from the start down to turn two. Massive slipstreams. So the chances are, if you're behind someone, even if you can't follow them through a previous corner, you can probably get close enough to go to slipstream. And if that slipstream is running for a long, long sequence and through corners, there's a chance you can get a wheel alongside or something. And then kind of force your rival to give you some room and try and muscle your way through that way. There's a high chance then of front wings contacting rear wheels and incidents and will be easy for the drivers ahead to block key. But I think I can almost guarantee the full number is going to watch the formula two race tomorrow just to see what sort of what's the nature of racing here because it's one thing you can talk about it and debate it in your team and come up with grand plans until you actually in the race itself and racing against other people. You can't actually get a feel for where these opportunities come from where the surprises are. You know, it could turn into a massive overtaking fest just because the slipstream effect is so strong, could prove to be a complete procession. You never know, and if you remember you go back to the first year of Baku..
