"The answer Well I think that's part of the answer I think it's also about not just pay them more but also I think we have to be real intentional about job training and we have people in this country communities of color that quite honestly have been left behind for so long that we need to be intentional about making sure we're making investments in the communities of color in the African American community in our country in a Latino community in our country I think that that's one way of doing it But it's also about how do we build a strong economy to continue the strong economy that we've seen this last year coming back I mean we're living in very interesting unique times This is unlike anything that any White House has ever experienced before Well maybe a hundred years ago Yeah So we're going to continue to follow the president as he continues to put plans out there to move our economy forward and moving people forward I don't know if it's possible to have long-term projections even a couple of months out when being so dependent on the data and COVID secretary But where do you see us going into the spring and summer Well that seasonality of COVID lifting helped to bring people back to work Well if I could if I can answer that question Joe I'd probably be in a different job So we're taking this a day at a time right now Understood Thanks to U.S. labor secretary Marty Walsh for being with us on Bloomberg balance of power get reaction out of what we just heard from the secretary Our political contributors Rick Davis Jeannie sanza are with us We were just talking about this Rick This is the challenge for this White House to see them getting out 5 days ahead of a labor report tells you what That tells me that they really worry about that labor report They're trying to diminish the value of it when it does come out It's bad news at a time when they were kind of hoping to pivot into some better good news cycles compared to the last month But look it is what it is They're going to have to deal with it I thought it was important to note that secretary Walsh really didn't want to touch on inflation I mean I'm surprised this administration is now trying to characterize that every day Are people savvy enough Jeannie to realize that it could be a one off that we get a bad month I realized last month came below expectations as well but to see the survey coincide with the peak of Alma cron Are we becoming savvy enough with this variant to tell the difference Yeah I mean certainly listeners of Bloomberg are I think the bigger question for The White House is our voters in some of these swing states paying as much attention as some people potentially on Wall Street and others who look at these numbers on a daily basis You know they feel inflation when they go into the grocery store They may not dig a little deeper to try to understand employment numbers GDP and those kinds of things And that's the job of The White House to communicate and explain and I think secretary Walsh did that He explained when and why these numbers are potentially going to look the way they are And they've got to keep pounding on that and explaining that to people And they've also got to show that they have a pathway forward to address most importantly the pandemic That's what's going to get these numbers under control and get people back to work Just when you think it's safe to go back Thanks to political contributors Rick Davis JD Chan Zayn will be with us back a bit later on this hour thanks to you both coming up We talk with Pennsylvania's lieutenant governor and Senate candidate John fetterman This is balance of power on Bloomberg TV and radio The news in Washington we travel to see what's around the bend and what we're capable of.

Governor DeSantis Condemns Biden's Haphazard Decision to Revoke Monoclonal Antibody Treatments
"Governor desantis condemns Biden administration's haphazard decision to revoke authorization of lifesaving monoclonal antibody treatments. Governor Ron DeSantis is demanding that the Biden administration reversed its sudden and reckless decision to revoke emergency use authorization. For Regeneron, an Eli Lilly monoclonal antibody treatments. This abrupt and unilateral action by the Biden regime will prevent access to lifesaving treatments for floridians and Americans. The story is this FDA restricts use of two monoclonal antibody treatments. I know people's lives who are saved by monoclonal antibodies. Now, their argument is like, well, it's not working that well against all Macron. Well, if not working that well as the standard for revoking, emergency use authorization, then maybe you should pull some EUA permits for vaccines. Not working that well. First of all, there's no clinical data to support that. Second of all, there is massive momentum amongst doctors action on the front lines of how monoclonal antibodies help condition the response and help with Regeneron regenerating white blood cell treatment and they are lifesaving in some cases. Not all the antibodies are effective. It doesn't work all the time, which is why you need to throw the kitchen sink at it. With all the other treatments, but now the federal government is coming out and they're saying nope, not happening. You are not allowed to use monoclonal antibodies. We are going to get in the way of what doctors are able to do with their patients. Now, we've already used all the words on this show. We know that Joe Biden has no concern whatsoever for the mounting deaths preventable deaths of people that have died from COVID-19 isn't care about the 100,000 plus overdose deaths. But what does he care about then? What is the explanation for this? Well, the FDA justification is they say, well, it's unlikely to be active against the Alma cron variant. Oh, unlikely. Not that it doesn't work, not that they have clinical data to show that monoclonal antibodies are doing harm. No, just that it's

4th Shot Likely 'Not Good Enough' To Protect Against Omicron, Israeli Researcher Says
"Well, Israel is now saying at Charlie Kirk dot com that four doses, the fourth booster shot is, quote, not good enough. Against Alma cron. Quote, an Israeli trial, the first conduction of its type in the world, experts say that a fourth dose of the vaccine is not good enough to protect against a while experts at Shaba medical center say that the fourth dose does raise antibody levels and their quote still a lot of infections, even among those who have quadrupled vaccinated. Israel is one of the most vaccinated countries in the world. Israel went all in on operation warp speed. Israel worked with Pfizer AstraZeneca. I think they got the Pfizer vaccine, though, in Israel, is that right? Which is very ironic if you know the history of Pfizer that Israel would be quick to want to embrace the Pfizer vaccine. That's a separate topic for a different time. Four booster shots are not enough. And what's been amazing. And again, I have not received a good answer. Doctor Pierre Corey when he joined our show to the white coat summit, he probably gave me the best explanation, but I still was not completely satisfied, of how is it that a community of people that are allegedly so focused on objectivity the scientific method on data on research, how is it they get it so phenomenally wrong for so long despite competing research?

says 86% of its population is fully vaccinated 1.2 billion people Cases in shenan city and western China eased after hitting a record a day earlier with a surge of Alma cron related cases in the U.S. 60% week to week The CDC is reporting out daily deaths fell 7% on a 7 day average CDC director Rochelle Walensky is seeing a higher number of kids in hospitals as home across spreads Ghislaine Maxwell has been found guilty of 5 counts of sex trafficking Let's get some more details for joining us live as Bloomberg's Thank you Akash The counts revolved around luring underage girls for Jeffrey Epstein correct That's right And she was found guilty of the most serious charge which was actual sex trafficking of a minor And that carries a possible prison sentence of up to 40 years So the most serious charge used on guilty which is really the headline here including four other counts Yeah Now the jury was out for what 5 days seem to be very detail oriented on charge That's for many rereadings Yes absolutely It was a nail biter because they have asked for quite a bit of stuff from the judge they wanted details on how exactly understand the word enticing for example which is in two of the counts against Maxwell They wanted transcripts of several of the witnesses including I believe they wanted 8 8 witnesses from the prosecution and then they wanted four from the defense And the transcripts that they wanted from the defense only came today So we really thought that they would still have several days ahead of them of grinding this out when all of a sudden they came back with a verdict this evening And they were going to have to work through the new year holiday too if they didn't come up come up with a verdict soon So there was this nail biting there in terms of how long they might take Yeah Now you mentioned that for the most serious charge of which he was convicted the potential sentence was 40 years I believe is what you said Is there more than that goes with the possibility with the other charges That's right I mean it depends on what she's sentenced And that's not your sentencing has something that hasn't been said yet because she still faces another separate trial for perjury So it could be a while before we know what she's actually sentenced But if in the scenario that she is given the maximum sentence for all the counts that you found guilty of and she's asked to serve those consecutively as opposed to simultaneously it would be up to 65 years And she just 60 year old woman So that's a long time Yeah yeah Do we have a date on sentencing No not yet I guess she has to she still faces another trial incredibly a perjury trial So that's unlikely that she's going to have her sentencing date before that trial And then we have to see if she's found guilty of that trial Yeah absolutely All right Todd thank you so much for your time really really really appreciate it Bloomberg's got you up porous and San Francisco I'm at Baxter This is Bloomberg David All right yeah let's get it back to markets too Marina Marin is with us He managing principle at MC square capital Marina good morning from Hong Kong Hope you're well and thanks for joining us today A pleasure to have you on our shows I guess I wanted to start off at you obviously have your investor hat on with just your basic assumptions on I think the U.S. economy's momentum particularly consumption going into next year since the fate of everything in the market inflation earnings really largely hinges on what type of consumer shows up next year What are your assumptions Well look I mean we had a very strong consumer through the holidays year The spending was up 8% year over year Which is good right Because personal consumption makes up 70% of our GDP year in the U.S. The most significant factor is the growth compared to 2019 Now with that said what's going to happen next year It looks like the party may be over not quite yet but it feels like it's a little bit The fiscal transfers and all the stimuli are older And that is important particularly Vis-à-vis consumer which are less affluent And that's important And the credit card probably went up And so to generate bills are coming So omnicon here the inflationary pressure are still here So we are investors with economists but we're looking at the sector carefully because we're not seeing all these hype coming into the first quarter of 2022 So we've got a strong labor market as you know and wage pressure that is building that speaks to a lot of buying power Do you want to be exposed to some of the consumer discretionary names right now At some point yes we would like to be exposed to those particularly we look at private markets So you see in the public market a lot of growth a lot of the momentum in those stocks we don't own any of those stocks of large retailers But for us it's going to be something to think about when we come down with valuations of private businesses We have to make sure that when we look at this quarter is going to be exceptional right I mean is that going to be business as usual for us The consumer discretion is still interesting Particularly because at this point the consumer is shown resiliency And not through one but three variants or more actually But widely spread variants So consumers back has not gone away And so we think it's going to be interesting for us very specific niche of the retail consumer sector to continue our investment activity Right And I wanted to get a sense now of what valuations look like in a private market You know some of the large institutional investors that I have on my show have basically pointed to the public market's valuation as something that might force public money into the private into the private market space What are valuations looking like at this point in time I mean especially with the S&P for example 70th record high this year All the indicators for the private market in the beginning of 22 is going to be very frothy We actually seeing occasionally private companies been valued higher than the public peers It's very interesting that doesn't happen quite often We are in a very different cycle right now So you are seeing depending on the sector on the verticals But in general you're seeing very fragile valuation in the private markets as well The one of the interesting trends over the last year was this move that spacs were kind of engaging in And I'm wondering whether or not you expect specs to become or to remain a popular vehicle in the year ahead Absolutely yes I think you're going to see a lot of carve outs talking about retailers right Or consumer You've seen what happened with live wire and Harley-Davidson There are talks about car bouts from large retailers on their Internet let's say non brick and mortar divisions Very high valuations In spacs are going to becoming are becoming very interesting to look at in this kind of an environment particularly the large specs they will continue to be a player In my opinion even stronger next year Very quickly as a final question Sir what's fundraising like at this point in time Just conditions and sentiment from raising is always tough I mean it depends on your track record and all of that But there is a desire to move to alternative illiquid which is what we do right And the allocations are moving even further from traditional 60 40 into more and more illiquid.

"I'm Michael Barr and this is Bloomberg Nathan Okay Michael thank you It's 5 19 on Wall Street live from the Bloomberg interactive broker studios This is Bloomberg daybreak I'm Nathan Hager The Alma cron variant of COVID-19 continues to spread at a breathtaking pace Global infections have topped a million for a second day and over the past week the U.S. is averaging a quarter million cases per day but hospitalization still remain relatively low Let's get more on the current state of the pandemic In a conversation with Rosanna peeling she is director of the London school of hygiene and tropical medicine She spoke yesterday with Bloomberg's Paul Sweeney and Matt Miller Let's listen to that interview now How do you think about this variant and how the response should be Well I think everybody should do everything they can to stop or slow the spread of this variant Because with the numbers that we're seeing eventually the healthcare system would be really stressed out And so we really need to think about even if possible wearing a mask distancing good cough etiquette and also hand hygiene washing your hands as much as possible If only to Swiss personal safety and also for not compromising the healthcare system So that those who need care can really get it What kind of data do we have on now doctor I mean do we know for example what percentage of omicron cases end up in the hospital Because people are dropping like flies or rather they're getting infected left and right but not really dropping like flies in my anecdotal experience Everyone seems to be getting it but nobody is going to the hospital Yes so I think that right now because many people are doing rocket testing themselves they may not necessarily report them to the authorities So our case rates are actually not as accurate as before when we had everyone going to testing centers So then in terms of the estimating percentage of those who are infected going into a hospital that estimate is not going to be as accurate But we do know that even with these amazing case rates we're not seeing the hospitals being overwhelmed the way they were at the beginning of this pandemic with quite a few people being sick and have severe disease And also I must say that for those people who are vaccinated even though they almost can't maybe not susceptible to the neutralizing antibodies that are induced by vaccines the vaccines still protect against severe disease and death And so I think that we are fortunate in that respect in many people being vaccinated or planned to be vaccinated and quite a few people are already getting boosters Do you know how many days after getting this roughly that you're still infectious that you're still liable to give it to somebody else Because we just had new CDC guidelines and they've reduced the amount of time you need to stay home if you're asymptomatic from ten days to 5 days Does that make sense Yes I think so And that's being if you're cautious in the beginning of the pandemic for the virus we said that you could be infectious and pass the infection onto others two or three days before your symptomatic and maybe you could be infectious up to 8 days afterwards But then most of the people are most infectious within three to 5 days after this concept of symptoms So I think CDC is recommending 5 days so that allow the economy to recover allow people to go back to work so it's a balance between risks and benefits And so I agree with the CDC recommendation to cut the isolation by half up to 5 days because you now averted the period when people are most infectious That was Roseanne appealing director of the London school of hygiene and tropical medicine speaking with Bloomberg's Paul Sweeney and Matt Miller You can hear their full interview online at Bloomberg dot com Tune in for more from.

"And that was a Bloomberg business flash now let's get to some of our top interviews from last year and will revisit one of Bloomberg's biggest interviews just in recent weeks Is mobility or delivery driving Uber's profitability Well that all rhymes doesn't it CEO Dara Castro he says it is both and predicts a bumper 2022 with all time records in mobility Now he spoke exclusively to Bloomberg's Emily Chang take a listen The world despite delta Alma cron et cetera continues to reopen as a world reopens the mobility business continues to get better and better And then on the delivery side delivery is incredibly sticky It's a great experience and we're adding grocery experience to it as well so the delivery business is also hitting all time highs which makes the whole company hit volumes all time highs last week That we do think is going to translate into profits and at this point we're confident that on an EBITDA basis we're going to come in at the mid to high point of the range that we gave earlier to our investors So so far so good So let's start with delivery How do you keep that growth growing as the world reopens Well what we see with delivery is that it's a sticky habit It's a little bit like Amazon People use Amazon pre-pandemic there was an acceleration and the majority of people who experience the delight of any food any restaurant that you want within half an hour You know they tend to stick around So we're seeing delivery audience growth of 25% on a year on year basis We're seeing frequency grow and we're seeing basket sizes grow as well with translates the very strong delivery volumes and we expect those volumes to continue We're also adding selection not just selection of restaurants but now we're adding grocery convenience go puff so that essentially if you forget toilet paper et cetera you can order an Uber eat so you can get it inside of half an hour which again adds to the frequency use case of our service Now mobility new post pandemic high Will it ever surpass pre-pandemic levels again And if so when It absolutely will surpass pre-pandemic levels And for example if you look at mobility bookings in Europe they're already higher than levels Today same thing in Latin America on a relative basis the U.S. and a packer lower than pre-pandemic levels but we see it over and over again Every use case is coming back workday use case weekend use cases travels trailing a bit as you would expect but the pattern that we see over and over again is as cities opened up as countries open up volumes actually come back And they eventually exceed pre-pandemic cause I can't tell you exactly when because I'll be trying to predict the health circumstance et cetera it's difficult but I am quite confident that next year we will be hitting records all time records in terms of mobility bookings I'll make that prediction now Okay Good to know All time records next year immobility Yes All Macron though The threat is rising here and around the world Are you seeing any impact Is it impacting airport rides And honestly how worried are you So we are not seeing any kind of an impact in our business as we speak Again last week was an all time high for mobility business This is an uncertain world And I think we as a company now because of the global nature of the business Some countries open up some countries might be closing down et cetera on average the world is getting better The efficacy of our virus of our meds are getting better vaccines are getting better Treatments are getting better The world now on average is handling the virus better And as a result that shows up in our mobility business I think the second factor for us is the delivery business is now bigger than mobility When we went into the pandemic the delivery business was about the quarter size of the mobility business Was he yet profitable And one of the new I would say trends that we pointed out to our investors is that we actually expect delivery incremental profits to be at or above our long-term margin targets of 5% So not only do you have a delivery business that's bigger than mobility it's a profitable business that's going to push incremental profits So we're now in all weather company And I couldn't say that coming into the pre virus But now post COVID were an all weather company and I think we can succeed and grow really in any environment What about grocery You've mentioned it a couple of times How are.

"To this special Bloomberg markets We are simulcasting Bloomberg markets radio and TV having some fun with that We're bringing you the latest on the market moves and also getting a look out to 2022 as we wrap up this final week of 2021 Again we got the markets kind of mixed here not much really moving here I'm just gonna pull up my screen here That is and looking at the markets here we've got the S&P just off a little bit thou up 92 points and NASDAQ That's off about a half a 1% so that's kind of where the move is here Omicron it's still with us The cases are piling up The challenges are out there There are some that say hey you just have to live with it and that's kind of where we are perhaps in dealing with this pandemic So lots of discussion out there Let's get the latest data the latest details the latest numbers We do that with Madison mills Bloomberg quick take she joins us in the mini studio Madison Thanks much for joining us here Boy a lot of numbers piling up really quickly What's the latest Yeah thank you so much for having me You know this is really concerning right Because we're seeing worse numbers than we ever have in the entirety of this pandemic So think about those worst days that we've had in March 2020 even 2021 Things are worse now than ever And we really can't emphasize this enough We saw global case numbers hitting over 1.4 million yesterday And unfortunately that number is only expected to rise as we start to get in data from people testing positive after holiday gatherings I also want to point out though a big shift in guidelines here in the U.S. from the CDC They changed the isolation guidelines for asymptomatic people who test positive So before you may remember Paul that we had to isolate for ten days if you tested positive even if you were asymptomatic that's dropped in half to 5 days And a lot of health experts are a little bit thrown off by that decision given those numbers I mentioned earlier So Matty I mean a lot of folks I mean we look at these numbers the record number of cases worldwide particularly in the U.S. and of course here in New York City There are also a lot of people that would say look at the case count but also look at hospitalizations also look at deaths What is that data showing us I'm so glad you bring that up romaine because I love to ask the public health experts what data points should I be looking at to get some hope in the darkness here And they say hospitalizations are the key to indicate where we're going to go with in particular Right now in the U.S. we're at 75% of our ICU beds in use right now And a smaller percentage of that is in you specifically for COVID patients But again the concern here is that people may have delayed going to the hospital because of the holidays They may have delayed getting tested because of the holidays So that hospitalization number is going to be really key for us to watch in the coming days to see how we're doing in our response to Alma cron lots of hospitals across the U.S. really struggling especially with staffing shortages because of hospital staff testing positive as well All right Madison thank you so much for joining us appreciate getting that update there Madison mills Bloomberg quick take headline just crossing the Bloomberg terminal France reports record 179,807 COVID cases in 24 hours So we'll have more reporting on that but it continues to be a surge Right now let's go to chanani bassi She's our Bloomberg Wall Street reporter because Wall Street investment banks were some of the more aggressive companies in corporate America saying get back to work on one of the rethinking that now Shanali what's the latest on what you're hearing from some of the big investment banks Well some have definitely pressed the pause button on returning back to office You do see others like Goldman Sachs and particular going full steam ahead just with new rules This idea at Goldman that you have to get a booster shot by February is interesting because the question is does that become the norm among the firms We don't see that yet at very many Jeffries is another one that also requires a booster shot by the end of January As we know shots are very hard to come by right now And the other question is what does this mean in terms of other restrictions Goldman has a rule now where you have to test twice a week starting early January down from once a week Morgan Stanley is asking in place to wear masks in the office after so long of not mandating that to happen So as you say you're right People are coming back to the office That's including in January Just new rules Well with new rules here And there's a general sense here that as they bring people back to the office they're inevitably going to have to deal with positive cases That's just the statistics there here Do they have contingency plans in place for dealing with that so that they don't sort of go back to saying okay now we're all back at home because we had an outbreak here on N one week I mean I think that is the contingency plan right Now romaine is going back from home There's really not much of the banks can do about a spread of a virus but with that said what I keep hearing from executives is we want to go forward not backward We are at a different place now than we were before We have more medication now coming available We have more vaccines Let's see how this plays out I think January is a big question mark because most firms remember didn't get back until late fall So now we're having a lot of people who just started trickling back in still not coming back in in full time And by the way I mean remember both firms that had people back did not have people coming back 5 days a week So it's not like it was a full return to begin with Yeah Yeah So it'll be interesting to see what happens when we get to the other side of the year Shanali Bassett there our chief work from home correspondent apparently We'll see her in the new year Hopefully she is well Paul look we make a light of this somehow But there are a lot of people that look at this right now and they say okay maybe oh Macron isn't as severe as what we saw with Delta beat and the other variants here Maybe this is something we can learn to live within a way and still be safe enough to go to work to go out and do and just live our lives like we did in 2018 2019 I tell you my inbox and my IB box is getting a lot more crowded with emails from listeners from viewers saying hey guys that's exactly where we are We're at a point where we just have.

"This is Bloomberg daybreak weekend our global look ahead at the top stories for investors in the coming week I'm Nathan Hager Winter COVID is definitely already hurting some businesses and the pain could get worse politically as well For more let's head to our Bloomberg 99 one newsroom in Washington and Amy Morris Amy Thank you Nathan this winter surge of COVID and the new Alma cron variant creating new headaches for the Biden administration but also maybe some new opportunities Joining me now to talk about COVID and the economy and political impact Bloomberg's Washington correspondent Mike dorning Mike it is a pleasure Thanks so much for taking the time Hi Amy Thanks for having me on Now the economy next year Mike is going to have to learn to live with the coronavirus This is what we're learning from the experts This would have to be without President Biden's social spending plan without a whole lot of help from the feds Sort of talk us through this what you might be watching for Well the economy which is coming out of the fourth quarter really strong is going to face a bunch of headwinds next year Mostly of Washington's making on top of a variant You've seen already the pandemic relief last year which added quite a bit to the growth and helped sort of jump start the economy is mostly going to be taken off So that will add about three percentage points of headwind to slow down growth next year Now you've got the on electron coming on President Biden's social spending plan has hit some speed bumps Goldman Sachs for instance lowered their GDP forecast for the first quarter from 3% to 2% which is a very modest growth rate So you'll see the economy probably go from gangbusters to kind of a slow modest growth very quickly in the new year Okay so then the good news would be that it could take help sort of take the edge off of inflation at least help take that edge off Since inflation is at what multi decade high at this point So that would be a good thing Indeed but probably not right away Probably most forecasters think will actually see flash inflation continue to tick up a bit in January and February before it starts to tamp down So the economy will probably start slowing before inflation starts go heading downward So what are the risks then How would that impact the economy as far as leaving it more vulnerable to shocks Like new variants Indeed it's much more risky now that we have the omicron period coming in and looking like it's going to spread like wildfire now without this economic support underneath the now the good news is the Federal Reserve although they have indicated they're going to accelerate their tapering they can sort of move on a dime and they can either slow that tape during or they can wait before longer before raising interest rates There's nothing locked in stone that they have to do what they're saying they're going to do next year They have complete flexibility to respond to economic circumstances Okay so that takes a little pressure off a little air out of the balloon But at the same time what adds more pressure are the midterm elections and President Biden is not polling very well when it comes to the economy No he's not I mean Americans are not surprisingly unhappy about inflation There isn't necessarily a lot The president can do about inflation He's trying to do some things like here and there try to improve ports and get them to move things more quickly make some changes and sort of trucking regulations to try to make it easier to move goods But basically a White House to president can't do much on inflation Nonetheless Americans historically for decades have blamed the president when inflation is not going well and Biden is no different than any other president he's being held responsible for the economy against Americans expectations Now remember we started this presidency in really bad shape with the economy and COVID rampant and big problems But we had expected the American people had expected and Biden had reinforced this expectation in the American people And once we had vaccines in the spring that things were going to start to get better over the summer And indeed they did start to get better in the beginning of the summer but then we had that Delta variant come We had these supply chain problems So Americans have not got what they expected so far And that hurts Biden How do you see Democrats and Republicans able to frame this in the coming days and weeks Particularly with the inflation Well but the inflation you're going to see the Republicans just banging away at the Biden administration with these inflation numbers higher And some of this inflation in particular is going to hit people in their utility costs this winter Because globally fuel costs have gone up quite a bit There are about gasoline for instance is up almost 50% from a year ago natural gas is also up in Europe you're seeing all these problems with utilities in Europe We'll start to see higher utility rates in the U.S. and that's going to be very painful for people So I would expect Republicans to be banging away on that And Mike you also have a story on the Bloomberg terminal And the headline really struck.

"Now with the latest news from New York City and around the world here's Jon Tucker Thanks Elise Then we're getting more information on the Alma cron variant just how effective current vaccines are against the new strain Initial data out of South Africa appears less than encouraging a two shot course of Pfizer's vaccine may have around 23% efficacy against symptomatic infection with the ombre variant That's according to lab experiments in that country We're also learning that president of South Africa has contracted COVID President Cyril ramaphosa tested positive over the weekend in the receiving treatment for mild symptoms In the UK Boris Johnson warning of a COVID emergency this morning the prime minister confirmed one person has died from the omicron variant of COVID-19 in the UK It addressed to the nation last night the prime minister set an end of year deadline for the country's booster vaccination program No one should be in any died There is a tidal wave of omicron coming And I'm afraid it is now clear that two doses of vaccine are simply not enough to give the level of protection we all need Prime minister Boris Johnson says the number of daily omicron cases almost doubled on Sunday Dozens of people and several Kentucky counties are believed to have died in weekend storms Kentucky was the worst hit state by far in an unusual December swarm of twisters across the Midwest and the south that leveled entire communities had left at least 14 people dead in four other states And security firms say hackers have begun exploiting a critical flaw in software used by businesses and governments around the world The flaws in a widely used programming tool that's maintained by the nonprofit Apache software foundation the vulnerability is considered so serious and time sensitive that government agencies from Switzerland to the United States and Australia have been urging companies to quickly install patches to the software Reliant for the Bloomberg interactive broker studios this is global news 24 hours a day on air.
