"For the monitor. More U.S. candidates, particularly on the Republican side, deny access to reporters while fewer voters respond to polls. That undermines our ability to understand and accurately convey what's really going on. Ask any political journalist today and they will tell you the process of covering campaigns sometimes even just tracking down the candidates has become an increasing challenge. The extreme partisanship gripping the United States is causing many campaigns to adopt greater security measures as politicians face real threats. And partisan echo chambers are giving candidates on both sides of the aisle less of an incentive to cooperate with reporters aiming for balanced read, not holy positive, coverage. The potential for a small verbal slip to go viral on social media makes the downsides of press interviews seem to outweigh the benefits. The challenge looms larger, however, on the Republican side. Many GOP candidates now echo former president Donald Trump's verbal attacks on reporters with fake news, a reliable applause line at rallies. And summer taking that scorn to new levels. In Pennsylvania, gubernatorial candidate Doug mastriano has essentially stiff armed the media, refusing to grant interviews and forbidding reporters from talking to supporters at his events. The lack of access along with problematic inaccuracies in polling the past few cycles has created a discomfiting sense of uncertainty. Is there a big red wave coming on November 8th? We don't really know. This story was reported by story hinckley in Allentown, Pennsylvania, for the monitor. Around the world, voters have elected outsiders to show their discontent with the political status quo. But when outsiders fail to deliver on promises, hope for a true alternative can feel out of grasp. If Louise Inacio Lula da Silva wins the runoff in Brazil's presidential election this weekend, Latin America's largest economies, including Chile, Colombia, and Argentina will be led by the left. Countering right-wing populism in booing hopes among supporters that the region can usher in the liberal agendas reminiscent of Latin America's pink tide. But experts caution that if victorious Lula could soon discover what leftists already in office have learned, there's no recreating the leftist wave of the early 2000s. The economic and political context has changed dramatically in the region, leaving few leftist governments, the funds for programs aimed at closing inequality gaps. Growing political polarization means shorter grace periods for president. That can in turn lead to anti incumbent sentiment that undermines hope for a true alternative. Nobody who is president right now in Latin America or aims to be president can expect to be popular or to implement huge reforms, says Oliver Stone kill, Professor of international relations at the jet tulio Vargas foundation, a Brazilian school and think tank. That shapes the entire political environment. This story was reported by Whitney ulick and Andrew Downey in São Paulo and Mexico City for

"It was an unusually warm December night in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and the worker running the register at the corner store in Delhi off airport road was having a horrible time. She just hung up the phone with the police for the third time in as many hours that evening and hope they'd show up as fast as possible. This was 1973. So you'd think there was some unruly leftover hippies ruining the clerk's night with their stoner shenanigans. Or maybe some local teenagers throwing rocks at cats. Or whatever kids did before cell phones. But no, it was just regular, hardworking, Allentown folk. The line for the gas pumps ran almost half a mile down the road, almost reaching the airport. The air was thick with the smog of pre regulation era big blocks chugging away waiting to fill up. Gas prices were through the roof, and tempers were just as high. Drivers pulled hoses out of each other's cars, and eventually started going toe to toe. Before the clerk shut the whole mess down and called the cops on the rowdy scene. Unfortunately, this one small snapshot of gassing up in late 1973 wasn't unique. Noses were bloodied, and eyes were blackened all over the country as tempers flared over rising gas prices. Shortages at the pump, and the end of an American era. How and why did American cars go from hefty hefty hefty to wimpy wimpy wimpy? Why were Americans so scared of running in a gas? They were beating the hell out of each other at the pumps. How did we get to the point that we just accepted a 165 horsepower Corvette? Why did American manufacturers make undeniably inferior cars over a decade? And how do they dig themselves out of a mess that was largely of their own creation? Today on past gas we're diving into the dark history of the malaise era. Buckle up or don't. We.

"Podcasts is not yours. It's not about sports. Oh, hey guys. How's it going? Hey. Welcome back to the show. Welcome back to pas gas. The only pad cast with gas past the podcast. Best case to podcast, SmackTastic. So I was just reading this and I totally forgot that in high school I had Dodge caravan, a 1990 gray Dodge caravan that I shared with my sisters. And that was the one that was the car that got stolen when I had to go and identify my do rag in $2 and change. It was found two blocks away because the transmission was slipping so much. The guy just didn't even want to deal with it. Guys, like, man, this is not worth it. Never mind. I just take this dug in this change. Minivans are not really like the coolest car obviously, but they are the best high school car. Oh, for sure. You got three rows to fit all your Friends in? Yeah. And they're like pretty safe and Geno like sturdy so you can do some hoodies. And you're not gonna really mess up your car. And you can smash it. You put two rows together. You can smash it together. You can smash it. I'm gonna go parents hanging out. Gotta bring garbage bags to block out the sunlight though. Did the back seat fold down? You know, I never tried, I was a virgin. Yeah, yeah. I can relate. All right, well, welcome to pass gas, everybody. Once again, another week here on the show, thank you very much for listening. I just want to thank everybody for listening. We don't do that enough. We usually save that for the end, but I feel like people may, you know, if you tune out before the end, if you don't finish every episode, you might not hear it. So thank you at the top to you dear listener. Yeah, there's some there's some anxious fans that have never heard us thank them. Yeah, they were like, oh man, are they even grateful? I mean, I just want you to know. Thank you guys. From the bottom of our of my two big kind of clogged apart. Oh, no. It's magic. We're recording this the weekend or the Friday right before Halloween, just that in October. We got some new shows coming probably by the beginning of next year. Yeah, we recorded a pilot for my new podcast. Yesterday. Yes, that's right. Can we give our listeners a little sneak peek of what they can expect with this new podcast? Celebrity interviews. Car story. A deep dive into my past. Okay, so we'll have a new podcast out. We can't really give you a name yet, because we're still working on it, but new Titanic. Yeah. So just be on the lookout for that. Anyway, if the donut media experience if this is your first episode listening to the show, it's everybody's first episode. My name is Nolan. That's James over there. Over there. I'm over here. A few miles away from me, and then we got Joe Weber as well. Up there up there. He's on top of a ladder. Hey, hey guys. It's an audio format Nolan. We can do whatever we want. That's true. Theater of the mind. Nolan's in the pirate ship. I'm down here in the submarine. Yeah, it's called painting the picture painting the scene on. Joe is piloting an albatross. Wow. That's my albatross Gary. I was gonna paint the scene of like how I've started cleaning my apartment last night, but then I realized it's not interesting. So let's just move on. This past gas, it's an automotive history show. This week, we're talking about the venerable just tighten of industry that is Lee Iacocca. You might have seen him recently in cinema if you saw Ford versus Ferrari. He's played by Jon Bernthal. Love John bernthal a great actor. Great character. But great historical figure as well. This guy really shook things up in Detroit had a lot of just different ways of thinking than the rest of the industry and his success is a testament to that. So do you remember in Ford versus Ferrari when Lee Iacocca turns into the punisher after Enzo doesn't sign the deal? Yeah, and he like goes down this hallway at the Ferrari factory, just like destroying people. Yeah, that was a pretty cool scene. There's that Angelina Jolie movie, those who wish me dead. Have you seen it? It's like she's like a firefighter. In one of those observation towers, anyway, John bernthal plays like a sheriff in the small town and he's like the most ripped badass sheriff ever. I love that man. I love it. I gotta check that out. It's a good movie. Hey, that's like your favorite actor, yeah. He's one of them, yeah, for sure. Now before we get to horsepower and Henry Ford's hamburgers, let's take a moment to consider Leah Coke as humble beginnings. How does a son of Italian immigrants go from running a hot dog stand in Allentown Pennsylvania to becoming the president of the Ford Motor Company before his 50th birthday? You sell a lot of hot dogs. That's how. We're living in some wild times, Joe in 2021, but imagine your fate. If you were born in 1924, Li grew up during a great depression. And while he was at college, World War II consumed the country. As you might imagine, these events had a profound effect on the young man. Lee Iacocca wasn't only child and very close to his Italian immigrant parents, Nikola, and Antoinette. Nicola was a hardworking savvy business owner, but lost everything during the depression. He impressed upon young Lee, the importance of never spending beyond your means, and in the event that you need to borrow, pay the loan back as soon as possible. Later on, we're going to see how this advice greatly influenced the way Lee conducted his business finances. I can not function when I have a bunch of debt like it's so makes me so anxious. Not a good feeling. No. Not a good feeling. Iacocca excelled in the classroom and is active in extracurricular activities. In his autobiography, he attributes much of his boardroom success to the lessons he learned as student body president and member of the debate team, particularly the importance of communication, communicating an idea and communicating with a constituency. You know, I was student body president in 16. 6th grade. That's right, dude. That's cool. Yeah, they really. What was your platform? I don't remember, actually. I just really wanted to be a school president. Made a lot of cool posters that I drew myself. Nice, with your face on it. To draw your face? I don't think so. I actually don't know how I won. I think about it. You know, okay, so you can only vote for school president if you're like fourth through 6th grade. And I remember really locking down like the fourth grade vote. Yeah. I mean, that makes sense because I think of the coolest people in high school and they were two grades ahead of me. Like seniors are way too cool, but like juniors you can talk to and they'll give you the time of day. Oh yeah, juniors are approachable. Yeah, totally. For sure. They'll be like, dude, we're gonna need someone, you know, on JV to take my spot. Yeah, and you can invest in the relationship because they'll be here next year..

These are things that people debate on the Internet for hours and hours and never close. And if you don't remember Die hard is Christmas, right? The Nakatomi Towers and by the way, Christmas Eve? Thank you for calling from California on on my radio show for years, Clay. We did something called action movie quote Friday where it was like open lines that people would call it. We might want to bring that back one day, just for fun. And like the third hour where people call in and they just call in and they give you a line has to be an iconic line. It can't be. You know, I would like a sandwich for dinner. Unless that's an iconic line for some reason from any action movie. It has to be an action movie. We had a lot of fun with that one. You look like your ability tonight. I grew up. I got two brothers and we had like the entire VHS collection through the eighties and the nineties of everything. Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Bruce Willis Van Dam. No. The movie bloodsport backwards and forwards in a way that I could teach a class in film school on blood, So they don't really make movies like that anymore. No, they did Right. Like for those of us who grew up in the eighties and the nineties, you just ran through all those different movies. That's another question. What's the greatest action movie that was ever made? But genres gone Now there's an exemption movies don't exist the same way they used to. Now it's been replaced by superheroes. Yeah, right. Let's be super hero movies. Probably The easy analogy is a big budget Hollywood You know lots of guns and explosions, but they're laser guns. Now Stephen in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Welcome. Thanks for having me on Clay and Buck. Thanks for doing what you're doing. You're killing it. I appreciate it. Thank you. Real quick. He works his way on being a cook on a tramp steamer. All the way to America and then works his way all the way to the salt flats. And then amazes everybody by setting a land speed record that still stands to this day. Thanks for the I've never heard of them. I've never even heard of the movie. Yeah, so I'd have to Google and check it out. But, Stephen, you're you're expanding. Our horizons are cinema tastes. No one has used that movie. By the way. "No, no, I've never wait in line for concert tickets. Never never done that. Well, not a lot of people have anymore if you're going, but even Internet even in the older days, you know, like, you know, 30 years ago, whatever. When you would like, go down to the yard and line up for never did it. Now the longest line I was ever in, was proud about an hour and a half for the Simpsons ride at Universal Studios in Florida. I believe it was universal Studios. I waited in line for an out with Jonathan and my wife. The Simpsons ride. Never doing that ever again ever, ever ever made was okay but not for 90 minutes worth. I can't even think of the longest have waited in line. I don't know. Ah, theme park somewhere. I don't know. I would never be for any food item, probably right. Uh, my line to get in the stadium just gets a 35 minutes to enter the bill Stadium. Right? OK, so that might be it for you? Yeah. Typically think of we're talking. It's a really, you know, the longest line you've waited in it. My guess is it is for tickets to something. Maybe you're one of those people like who camped out overnight for playoff tickets one time or there's a flight cancelation and you've got to get in line to go to the counter to get new Internet And sometimes those can be long. That's right. Yeah. Never had that I may have had flight cancelations. I've never waited in line playoff tickets. I've never slept overnight. I'm not sure that I ever would. I've seen sure Chef Ski Ville at Duke. But again, I'm not sure that I would actually want to pitch a tent and sleep overnight, waiting for tickets to a game. So, Yeah, it's whatever theme parks you know, Disney Universal. All that stuff where you wait in line for half hour 45 minutes. Our You know the popular roller coasters all that stuff, man. I would We have a white castle. Did you have one in Auburn? No, we have one of them. There's nothing, nothing cancel. No, I don't think it's just a downstate thing. Yeah, The closest one's got to be Albany, New York area further down. I don't know. I didn't realize that we have one of my hometown on Long Island. And honestly, White Castle was, you know the bar's open before? Not that I was out till four. But you get done it one or two. Whatever. And if there's literally there was no place open to get food, but White Castle That's when you're really hungry. That is like break glass in case of emergency. Not a big fan of the burgers never really cared for them. Yeah, they were cheap and you walk away with like a sackful. You know, you get like eight of those little squares. And you're down about three a.m.. That's the only time we would ever go to White Castle. I've got amazingly, though it's still there to this day, so it's been there. I mean, as long as I'm alive, it's been in the same spot. Closest ones appear to be in Allentown, Pennsylvania. It's like Philadelphia area, right, so that's Kind of far away. Yeah, Yeah. That's absolutely right. have you been. I'd be good. That'd be good you know. Hey it's a pandemic. so what can we say but hanging in there Staying out more trouble than i normally would because it's harder to find trouble that's yeah it has been one crazy crazy year. Hasn't not or how are how are you guys doing with it. Down on fairly look being managed out of control i would say that four populated countries. I think australia has to be pretty close to the top of the list for the way we've handled it the that's all. i think. Awesome the here about a lot in the news here. We don't hear australia mentioned so that's interesting because they've done very well as well live managed to keep it under control will And put it on the news a lot. I think for the entirety of the year. I think streisand had about a thousand deaths if that all. I don't think we've had massive numbers at all. Victoria had a second wave way. The whole state went into lockdown for months on end and people were not allowed by the houses unless they had a good reason did they could only go within a five kilometer range and all that sort of stuff so we've been at governments have come under criticism for being too heavy handed but when i look look at africa's against say the us figures kind of think well i'd rather a slightly heavy handed government that actually keeps us alive the one that draws the just sweep it under the cap and pretend it's not a problem it's getting pretty rough here in europe is also going through the same and right now of course we're kind of in this crazy limbo where you know. We're really not getting any great direction. At this point administration. They're they're talking a lot. They're encouraging people. But obviously we still have the old administration. It's basically sand. Yeah there's no pandemic everything's fine. It's like we kind of live in two different worlds. Yeah it's been an interesting year this year so photographic. Have you been up this year. Haw well let's see. Prior to this year. I was doing a ton of traveling. Or olympus since my other sponsors teaching that kind of stuff i came into this year with what would have been literally my busiest year probably in the last twenty years might might. You're booked solid The beginning of the year. I was doing a nationwide tour. For olympus introducing the new owen. Dam one three camera. And the last trip i made was down to florida in the first week of march and Came home a couple of days later. We went into lockdown and within three weeks my entire schedule for the year was just wiped out. Everything had cancelled well in advance A few of the events went Went virtual but You know. I've always kind of been somewhat of an entrepreneurial spirit so i figured all right you need to pivot quickly and Some photographers pivoted by kind of moving into like product photography in that because fortunately people were still producing catalogues online stores. And i really didn't feel like going back into that area. I'd done that years and years and years ago. So federate i'm teaching. I'm enjoying the teaching. So i didn't learn how to do it online and i took a couple of days and did the whole pros and cons thing like okay. What are all the things that i like about online teaching. And what are all the things that i hate. And not of course was the longer list I'm a bit of a marketing nerd. So i've done a lot of marketing. Webinars where you sit there and the instructors staring down a laptop screen with really bad lady and a blurry image. And they're like okay. Let me let me share my screen with you. Oh wait hold on a second hold on I knew i had that slide deck. You're just a second you know. They're just painful. So at that point i did a ton of research figure out. What's it gonna take. How can i make a presentation. That is as close to doing in person as possible without really being there. And

Battling Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs

"We're GONNA start our show today by taking a trip back to the nineteen eighties when singer. Songwriter Billy Joel was at the top of his game and he released two. Song Allentown about the decline of the steel industry. In America steel factories were closing in steelworkers. Were losing their jobs. The song shed light on the challenges the workers faced and at the same time. It made allentown a city in Pennsylvania quite famous so now let's fast forward twenty or so years. Two Thousand and one and Allentown is in the news again but this time it's because of an insect an agricultural pest from Asia had somehow found its way to Pennsylvania. The insect called the Brown rated stink bug feeds on apples. Peaches figs mulberries citrus fruits and other crops. Well it didn't take long for these tough little bugs to spread and by twenty ten. They wrecked havoc on orchards and crops in various parts of the United States. And the really bad news. Is that Brown? Mom rated stink. Bugs are still here and there on the move and they may soon arrive to a fruit tree near you. So what can we do about it? I've invited Tracy Leschi to the studio today to find out. She's an entomologist. And by the way an optimist as you will discover in this interview today. She's also the director of the Appalachian Fruit Research Station at Cairns Ville West Virginia. Her research is focused on the development of behaviorally based management tools for invasive and native pest of fruit crops. But before we start chatting I would love to hear your stories and your questions during the show you can email those questions and stories to in-studio one. Oh one at g mail DOT COM and do remember to include your first name and the city. You're writing from so tell us. Have you seen these bugs in your fruit trees? And what have you done about it in studio one a one at g mail dot com is the email so now to Tracy Leschi. Thanks for coming on the show today. Thank you Susan for the invitation. I'm so glad to have you here. And hopefully you will shed some light on these mysterious bugs. Oh my goodness so. The Story Starts Allentown. Can you tell me a little bit about that discovery? What was happening around then here. So you know Brown Mama Rated Stink Bug as you've already mentioned is a species that is not native to North America. It's native to Asian countries including China Japan Korea and Taiwan. This insect is an excellent hitchhiker And we'll probably get to that in a little while but at some point in the to late. Nineteen nineties homeowners. In and around the Allentown region of Pennsylvania were Seeing some interesting invaders in the fall to their homes and in fact these were Brown. Mom rated stink bugs. Now the issue was is that they weren't properly identified until two thousand one when Karen Bernhardt who with Penn State cooperative extension in Pennsylvania collected some of these specimens from a homeowner and she ended up sending them to attacks honest Rick Holbeck at Cornell and he identified them as Brown mom rates. Think so this was the first official record of population in North America. So how on Earth would they have gotten there? How did they get to these people's homes right so one of the interesting things about Brown mom rated stink bug is that they are excellent hitchhikers as adults and that means is that they can sort of end up being concealed and hidden from view and sort of take a journey to somewhere else and this is related to what we as entomologist refer to as their over wintering behavior which is essentially like hibernation for insects. So when these insects hibernate more or less they crawl into cracks and crevices and hunker down and wait for spring. And if these cracks or crevices happens to be in some sort of shipment of goods or perhaps in your suitcase or who knows This is how often these bugs have been transported to new locations. Whoa so how quickly would they spread? So let's say or what a what a thought. Let's say it's in your suitcase. You've gone on holiday to China. Or whatever he brought back these little hitchhiking bugs So let's say you have one bug or two bugs what happens then. How quickly would they spread? Well if you found one or two bucks I'd tell you to kill them I but You know it's a good question. They have a pretty good Reproductive capacity that sort of what we say in terms of you know how quickly can a population build up? Based on the reproductive efforts of a female a single female can lay up to twenty eight eggs at a time in in an egg mass. And she can lay up to four hundred over her lifetime. So you can imagine if you know. Just a portion of those eggs survived to adulthood and then reproduce. You can see that. A population could build rather quickly so is is that what happened like You know how quickly did this problem spread? You said it started sort of in the late nineties. It was discovered two thousand and one. And then what happens? Well what happened? After that was it was a slow spread And it was a slow build up for a number of years so in two thousand and three I found the first specimen officially outside Pennsylvania in Maryland. Just south of Allentown Pennsylvania. I in in sort of central Maryland in a town called Hagerstown There was some. Also some official detections in New Jersey and then it continued to spread through what we refer to as the mid Atlantic here in the United States and to Virginia West Virginia You know parts of Delaware Into upstate or sort of well. I should say downstate New York so the populations continued to build Over a number of years and then you know really began to build quickly back in two thousand eight two thousand nine and in two thousand and ten throughout the region. We really experienced what we refer to as an outbreak population. So what did that look like Especially if you're growing cheese. Yeah it looked well you know. When we first began to detect problems in fruit trees from Brown mom raided stink bug and say two thousand eighteen thousand nine. The issues were confined really to the late season. Where just before harvest and this is really painful. If you can imagine your fruit just about ready to be picked from the tree almost ripe. We were seeing large numbers of adult invading the orchards in the fall and feeding on the fruit and this was causing for some of our local growers up to ten percent loss. Even back then but in two thousand and ten we saw the bugs invading earlier much earlier actually just after the fruit had formed just after pedal fall essentially in these orchards. In that early season feeding really set up our growers for significant losses. Where you know for our Peach Growers. Many growers lost their entire crops. Most lost half of their crop. And then it just went on from there. You know apples and Incurred ABOUT THIRTY SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS IN LOSSES. Thousand and ten just locally. That's terrible was the fruit. Not salvageable at all. I mean what what do these Brown marmalade stink bugs due to the fruit? Yeah they are you know. They are a typical stink bug species in that their mouth parts are essentially a straw and they insert that Straw into the fruit tissue and they inject some salivary enzymes that essentially helps break down that tissue and suck out the juice and so what they leave behind. Is this dry corky tissue beneath the surface of the skin as well as discolored display depressions on the surface now for peaches because the feeding Began so early essentially once you peel that fruit. The entire fruit was riddled with these deep pockets of dead comey tissue and you know. The entire fruit was essentially unsolvable. It was just a complete loss. For FOR APPLE. Growers some of the fruit could be redirected to From sort of a fresh market to juice market. But you know they're getting Cents on the dollar in terms of the value so in essence they're losing over. Ninety percent of the value of that fruit have normally gone into fresh market. So it was very

Vineyards Facing An Insect Invasion May Turn To Aliens For Help

"Bug recently arrived from China is munching its way across eastern Pennsylvania from there. It's poised to spread across much of the country. Killing trees and grapevines finds so scientists are considering something drastic importing other insects the bugs natural enemies from the place it came from NPR's. Dan Charles has the story. I was walking around the park near Allentown Pennsylvania and I didn't even notice the bugs at first then heather leach arrived the insect expert Berg from Penn state but if you take under these leaves sure enough they're climbing up underneath the ivy and then I realized they're all over. This tree spotted lantern flies. A marching column of gray bugs each one about an inch long black spots on their wings sucking sap from the tree. They're kind of ugly especially. When there's thousands of them you'll start to poke at them and you'll see how strong hopper there you see that they've just take off could be entertaining. You see a lot of kids running around playing with them trying to stomp on them spotted lantern flies. I showed up in the United States five years ago right here in Berks County. Nobody knows exactly how some eggs probably hitched a ride on shipping containers across the specific. Now there are hordes of spreading across Pennsylvania and beyond chances are they'll eventually reach most of the country. It's an insect that lays its eggs on on anything including things that get transported hops onto vehicles and can hold on. They don't seem to have any natural enemies here but they found lots of trees with sapped that they like. They've got a buffet out here if they can eat all of these plants and they don't have anything that's down so they're having a good time. They're having a party right. Heather Leach gets panicked calls for people with swarms of lantern flies on their houses or their trees. She tells them don't freak out. These bugs won't bite or sting but but they're not a joke either they really can destroy fix and the people who are seeing this first our vineyard owners like John. Landis vine crest winery west of Allentown uh-huh going. Landis is pressing grapes smiling. Harvest is a good time. He says but then I asked him about the Lantern Flies Anthony Turns series. We've never had a situation like this and forty years. If you start to decimate your vineyard we can cause people to go out of the wiring business. It's actually actually killed funds. Oh yeah definitely kills wise. We walk out into the Vineyard and sure enough. The section next to the woods is infested with lantern flies a lot of vines. It's our dead already. From last year's attack we had lantern pipe just kind of pouring out of these trees last year invading this area here and then down on this hill vineyard owners can spray insecticides protect their crop but that's costly and it can kill helpful insects like bees and ladybugs also it doesn't help with the bigger problem. The damage lantern flies can cause to whole ecosystems leach scientists or worried. They might kill off some trees in forests were also starting to see early indications of displacement of other insects and as a result displacement of birds as well but maybe she says if the problem came from China the solution Russian could to you see back in China. The lantern fly has natural enemies that hold it in check tiny wasps so small you can barely see them scientists from the US this department of Agriculture have brought two kinds of these wasps to the United States. They're under quarantine and a couple of USDA labs like the beneficial insect introduction laugh in Newark Delaware to USDA scientists. Amanda Stout and Kim homer lead the way into the quarantine room. We're all suited up in white overalls head to toe now. Next door is high security this quarantine zone. It's filled with these environmental chambers. They look like big refrigerators. homer opens opens one up and points me towards something in sealed containers. There's a little white thing about a quarter of an inch long with a dark in there that just the cocoon. This is one stage in the life cycle of a lantern flight killing wasp. The wasp lays eggs inside baby spotted lantern flies called nymphs the eggs hatch into larvae that feet on the nips and kilter so maybe they could do this outside. The lab in Pennsylvania's forests sounds kind of crazy releasing an invader to fight another invader but homer says really it could work. There are many many examples of successful and safe introduction of natural enemies. He says it's best when the natural enemies a specialist when it only tax invasive species you're trying to control so now he's trying to figure out whether these wasps only lay their eggs in lantern flies or if they attack. North America's native insects to getting answers. We'll take years in the meantime. The lantern flies will keep on moving. Dan Charles N._p._R. News.
