Fifteenth. Two. Thousand Twenty on this day in Nineteen Ninety one Clarence Thomas was narrowly confirmed to the Supreme Court despite allegations of sexual harassment by Thomas's former aide Anita Hill. Welcome to today in true crime a spotify original from cast due to the graphic nature of today's crimes. Listener discretion is advised extreme caution is advised for listeners under thirteen. Today. Recovering. Thomas Confirmation to the US Supreme Court in the face of sexual harassment allegations. Now, let's go back to October fifteenth, Nineteen Ninety one to the Senate floor in Washington DC. It was a tense day for the nation for three days. America had listened to law professor Anita Hill testify about the lewd comments Clarence. Thomas. Had made to her while he was her boss ironically at the equal employment. Opportunity, commission or EEOC and hills testimony suggested that there was not much by way of opportunity if you were a young black woman working under Thomas. while. She was reluctant to characterize her treatment under Thomas as illegal sexual harassment in the workplace. She made it clear that his character was not at the standard necessary to serve the highest court in the land. Many Americans rindt convinced by Hill's testimony however, most believed that Clarence Thomas should be confirmed according to a poll run by CBS and the New York. Times these skeptics had various reasons for dismissing hill some she was lying or exaggerating or simply deluded some thought her allegations were part of a racist witch hunt despite the fact that hill like Thomas was black Thomas, himself accused the all white Senate, Judiciary Committee of conducting a high tech. Lynching still other, Thomas. Believed that even if hill whilst telling the truth, it shouldn't matter. Thomas should be considered for the job of Supreme Court judge based on his work, not his personal life. Of course, as his aide Anita, Hill's treatment was part of his work. Now, the Senate was settling in for one last debate over these questions. As the senators argued on the floor President George H W Bush scrambled in the White House doing his best to bring executive pressure to bear on Congress. He wanted his nominee confirmed the American people meanwhile inundated Capitol Hill with all the pressure they could bring to bear phones were ringing off the hook telegrams were coming in droves everyone wanted their say. But in the end, it was up to the Senate their votes would determine whether or not Clarence Thomas was worthy of a spot on the highest judicial bench in the land. The tension of the day reached a boiling point as the results were called in fifty two to forty eight in favor of Thomas. If, three more senators had abandoned Thomas. He would have lost his opportunity to sit on the Supreme Court bench forever but he had just enough Democrats on his side to scramble across the Finish Line Eleven. Many of those senators were dependent on the support of black constituents and likely feared that a vote against Thomas would be read as an anti-black vote. Still it was far from a sweeping victory for Thomas. It's no surprise that the judge wanted to put the whole ordeal behind him as he put it this is a time for healing not a time for anger or Animus or animosity we have to put these things behind us and go forward. That worked out pretty well for him to this day almost two decades later he still sits on the Supreme Court and at seventy two, he may have years left before retirement. The oldest ever judge to leave the court was Oliver Wendell. Holmes Junior who served until he was ninety years old. Many women were less eager to forget what happened in October nineteen ninety one however, Marsha Green Burger founder of the National Women's law center explained it way. Anita. Hill sparked conversations among women that they had never had before about experiences that they realized were shared by so many others. This was the first time that they saw they weren't alone both by her telling her own story, and then by they're discussing their stories with their friends and family many of these women saw potential in this new solidarity and were determined to transform it into change. Coming up the legacy of Anita Hill's testimony against. Thomas. Listeners who doesn't love a good ghost story rattling chains mysteriously moving objects unfinished business. He told the press that the Santa Claus Association needed one thousand dollars to cover only unnecessary postage nine days later. He doubled the number to two thousand dollars. Gluck also told newspapers that the charity was was three thousand dollars in debt although he had no proof to back his claims but the press took him at his word anyway and soon the coal all to help the Santa Close Association spread across New York City. Newspapers even helped promote Klux requests for funds with some emotional emotional manipulation of their own that December the Brooklyn Daily Times wrote. What are you going to do to bring Christmas? Cheer to some Little trusting bit of humanity who still has all faith in the good old saint but the donations actually went directly directly to gluck and as the chief financial officer of the group. He could spend the money as he saw fit. Without raising any suspicions he collected more funds in Nineteen fifteen than either of his previous years and after whittling down the association's expenses he was able able to pocket the excess for himself in the thousands but the center close association wasn't the only thing that had gluck siphoning off money meant for children. While he was drumming up fraudulent Christmas spirit the conman also continued his his publicity work with the United States boy scouts all the U. S. B. S. when was first hired as the publicist for the USB he s he was promised forty percent of every dollar he raised now two years later gluck was taking home fifty percent and sometimes even sixty percent of all the funds he brought in and the longer the operation was in business the more corrupt it became it was hard to track exactly how dishonest the USPS leaders were because like gluck the organization also didn't keep heap clear financial records but the young scouts never saw most of the money flowing into the USPS coffers they had to buy their own equipment wittment and pay for weekend camping trips. This kind of relates in thievery was apparent to the USPS his rival organization. The boy always scouts of America or the S. A. The BSA was the USPS's larger more legitimate counterpart and unlike the USPS USPS. The Boy Scouts of America never misappropriated funds raised for their troops. They had a squeaky clean reputation. One that gluck and the United States boy scouts glommed onto many donors who gave money to gluck in the US bs believe they were actually giving to be as a and gluck did his best to encourage this mix up for as long as possible in fundraising letters he even mimicked statistics from the BSA to fool the UNOBSERVANT Dona for example when the boy scouts of America announced announced that target goal of one million members the USPS parroted the same number today donors with no formal paper trail. This excessive corruption was hard to track. But it didn't go entirely. Unnoticed as more charities sprouted up in America efforts were made to curb rampant theft among these institutions. One of these was was the charity organization society. The Charity Organization Society or C. O. S. was a group originally created in response to open association and the changes that it brought to American cities its initial goal was to alleviate poverty but I tend to nine thousand nine hundred it dedicated itself to cracking down on inefficiency and waste specifically within charities that claim to help the poor mm-hmm as part of this effort the C. O. S. investigated groups like USPS that spent more money on its leaders and his board of directors then on the actual boys it claimed to help the C. O. S. couldn't find enough on the USPS to shunt the organization down entirely but in the course closed their investigation. They noticed one name appearing over and over again John Du Val gluck junior on on the surface. Gluck was just a publicity man but he was also tied to many of the. USPS is most corrupt fundraising efforts And the CEO S was surprised to learn that he ran another charity group. The Santa Claus Association the C. O.. S. was wary of Christmas or more specifically of the frivolous attitude. That people adopted over the holidays Christmas shopping. Winging gifting had become excessive and spending increased so did charity donations but the C. O. S. had the same realization as Gluck doc the holidays or the perfect time to take advantage of people's goodwill and as the face of all this Christmas Smith's Joy glocks Santa Claus Association was an easy target to lock onto so the CEO s investigated Eighteen Klux Association but in their zeal to eradicate corruption. They missed the real target. Instead of going off to Gluck the organization. Crackdown on the children. The association was claiming to help. That logic was simple. The children of New York grew up in a sophisticated world. They couldn't possibly believe in Santa Claus therefore the C. O. S. declared that the letters mustn't have come from kids in need it instead. Well off children. Had written in exaggerating circumstances in the hopes that they could take advantage of the public's goodwill goodwill the target was off glocks back for the time being but it wasn't long before the authorities would come breathing down around his neck again and this time they wouldn't be so easily distracted coming up. Gluck grows arrogant after dodging a bullet with the C. O. S. but his bravado catches the attention of assistant district attorney Edwin kill row..
