"It was 23. I don't remember. And, uh, Began an agency called the Action Agency, which no longer exists. And it was run by a great Patriot by the name of Tom parking out of Dallas, Texas. Long story short I was his Don't know. Chief of Staff Executive assistant. Whatever you wanna call it. And I was the first one in the building. During the transition. And, ironically enough was a building right off Lafayette Square doesn't exist anymore. They knocked it down and build a new building. Just as well. There are a lot of cockroaches there. In all forms. So I'm going through various data and statistics and looking at computers such as they were back then, but anyway Then I come across these big boxes. I mean, they were big. And they had thousands of copies of this red and white paperback book. Called Rules for radicals. By Saul Alinsky. And I'm relatively intelligent. I'm in there and see what the hell is this? No. Linskey was a Communist. I didn't know much else about him. Excuse me. Community activist out of Chicago. And I found these boxes in the Vista office Volunteers in service to America. Remember that part of the great society? And I said, look more and more into it and spoke to various people. I found out that you the taxpayer, we're paying enormous sums of money. To purchase this paperback book. And circulated in mass. In our inner cities. I said, Well, this sure as hell explains things in Philadelphia, where I Mostly familiar. It was the street brothers that was their name. And very radical. And In some ways, very violent.

"A Ukrainian military aircraft carrying 20 cadets. His crash, killing almost everyone on board, such as coming. The area of the cross found two more bodies the day after the crash. The plane was carrying a crew of seven and 20 students from a military aviation school when it crashed and burst into flames while coming in for landing at the local airport about 250 miles east of the capital, Kiev. "But last night I played a new game I'd never played for called Word Slim. And the idea was you'd get a cont. That would have a clue on like hot air balloon and in under a minute you have to clue your partner. You can only use words on cards in your deck. So if it was hot air balloon, for example, you could do what I did and use the word transport old fashioned. Sky. and. They're sort of obviously shouting things out and trying to guess, and if you're playing with Thomas Alinsky, he won't know what that means. All you can do what the opposing team did and just use the word up. And with that one word, they would know that the answer was hot air ballooning. Even, though that team was not married. And hadn't spent every waking hour of lockdown together. So should be more a little bit more telepathic but what are you gonNa do I can't think what other things old-fashioned transport in the sky but anyway, it doesn't matter. Lots of rounds forced us into rather binary way of describing things like, for example, when Thomson Linski queued janitor as man job inside building and I said, afterwards could be a woman Jonathan could be woman but this kept happening in a sort of kept talking to everybody and I wanted everyone to feel comfortable and eventually I said. Ask speed I'd had two vodkas accidentally accidentally said look we're. We don't have time for feminists. Though was that time of went very fast and sometimes you do sink of among agenda. So I do think I am not open to discussing the words I use to describe gala. But one of those hot and I won that round so. I'm a feminist, but I make jokes about my weight sometimes on TV and other women don't like it and they send me lots of DM's about this constantly. But I like to joke about my weight because I find it. Funny. For example, one of the jokes they didn't like was something I said about an elevator I got into an elevator in debonair and it said this lift is overcapacity and I was the only one in it. which made half of the audience laugh. But the other half were worried about my sanity when I did that and just to let you know I just think it's very funny when I don't fit and stuff and I know that's not very feminist of me. But it's funny. I'm a feminist Bart recently among told me that he had a best friend they just so intellectually paired you know they have such brilliant deep conversations and they also have this great are and. They nearly kissed one spot. He pulled back from it because he said, don't lose the friendship but then she said look I really have feelings for you and I really fancy you and you obviously fancy me and this could be perfect and he went I thought. No, I think I'd rather have the friendship. And I just felt for her so much that I said, what happened to men. There was a time when men would be like, yes please sex what has happened to that I mean obviously, that's not what I said to him. That's not right but I, hear the story so much now that Frisco, he's perfect for me I'm perfect for him. He's just like I can take a leave it and I was like, but surely you should try it because in the words of Adel, you could have had it all and With the REGGAE beat and I. Felt. Like if this was a woman, say my best friend is in love with me and I'm not love with him and so I I absolutely boundaries distance because it was a man I was just like I feel sad for her and I think this is going to end in some kinds of wrong combine to the airport. I do feel a bit bad about it but no spot is I should. I'm a feminist, but my boyfriend gets a little of DMZ from women who pretend to be my fans telling in a great I am. And instead of saying things to them, I followed them. and become their best friend. Because they felt anything I just believe. That any person who messages someone after midnight. Oh I mean even slightly before that. I mean. That's all ten pm. Ten there was. A former cups of it's ten. Oh. One is that I feel that's on the ballot. Top Ten you can do as well, but reaching eleven to twelve and onwards. then. And he never easel was just being friendly. An idiot. And I only know this because I too was in my twenties and I'm because of him. He should feel very flattered since I've been with him and in the relationship I've become a better feminist because terrible behavior me telling them what to do.
Parnas presented to Ukrainians as speaking on Trump's behalf
"You're really at the time was the general. The first thing I did this to introduce myself and tell them I'm here on behalf of really Giuliani beyond the president of the United States. And I'd like to put you on speakerphone for you. Know to confirm which we did we put you on. The phone rudy relate to him basically that we were there on behalf of the president of the United States. And you were there to speak on president. Trump's behalf exhibited those exact words. Mr Parnasse says that when he was taking meetings to advance this scheme taking meetings with various government officials in Ukraine he says it was a regular occurrence. It was the way those meetings started. He would put rudy. Giuliani on phone on the speakerphone in the room and he would say explicitly. Mr Giuliani would say explicitly that as the president's personal attorney he could affirm that left Parnis. was there air at that meeting. In Ukraine to speak on behalf of the President of the United States Donald Trump in May of last year may twenty nineteen. Mr Giuliani started speaking with reporters about his plans to travel himself to Ukraine to try to enlist the Ukrainian government's assistance to help hoped his client president trump. Basically in his re-election effort he said he was going to Ukraine to try to get them to announce investigations into Vice President Biden because that would be very very helpful to his client in the resulting firestorm of criticism. Mr Giuliani's trip was called off in May when he called off the trip. Mr Giuliani Johny made public statements. Criticizing the new government of Ukraine saying that Ukraine's new president was surrounded by enemies of the United States and for Ukraine that it was a really big deal right Ukraine. A country at war with Russia is a country very much dependent on both the reality and the perception of their having strong support from the United States government. And so when Mr Giuliani as the president's personal attorneys started making public claims the new Ukrainian president was surrounded by enemies of the United States of America. That's why he wasn't going to Ukraine at that point. The Ukrainian government kind of freaked out that kind of criticism from the new administration for their new new president in Ukraine. And that's a potential death sentence for their country so at the time that happened left part was in Ukraine in Kiev. At the time all of that happened and he told me today that he was tasked by Rudy Giuliani in that moment to crank up the pressure on the government of Ukraine to make even more insistent and obvious is an even more onerous this threat and this demand that Ukraine must announce investigations into Joe Biden. Or else it. Did you meet with Ukrainian official name. Sergei Schaefer Circuit Schaefer is a very senior aide to presidents Alinsky. It has been reported as far as we understand from public reporting that you conveyed to Mr Schaffer. The exact quid pro bowl that you wanted Celeski Alinsky to announce investigations into Joe Biden or military aid would not be released to Ukraine. Is that accurate. It was a little bit more than that Aw Basically The message that that was supposed to die gave Sergei Schaefer was a very harsh message that was told to be to give it to him in a very harsh way. A not in a pleasant way to give it to harshly mayor Guiliani Rudy told me After a meeting the president the White House he called me. His message was wasn't just military. It was all eight. Basically the relationships would be sour. You would stop giving him any kind of aid that unless that there was an announcement made several several demands at that point a the most important one is the announcement of the bite. Ministration did you also convey convey to him that the US government would stop showing support for mistress Alinsky. They wouldn't attend the inauguration those that was the biggest thing. Actually that was the that was the main Wasn't because at that time you have to understand the way you create now is for presents alinsky winning on that platform being a young president and not really having any experience the number one end being at war with Russia at the time the number one thing for them was not even eight and I know it sounds crazy but it was more of a support for the president resident by having a White House. Visit by having a big inauguration by having all the dignitaries there that was the key and at that time There were already aware because of their Conversations with the I guess what the embassy that President Vice President Pence was supposed to come to the inauguration was already discussed and they were replanning and now they were just working on days. That would be good for him at our meeting. I was very very heated. Conversation from our part to him. Basically telling What needs to be done? I mean basically me and at the at the at in the conversation. I told him that if he doesn't the announcement it was the key at that time because of the nation the pence would not show up. Nobody would show up to his inauguration unless he announced an investigation into Joe Biden No. US officials Dell's particularly vice president. Mike Pence would not come to do so the day after that meeting that you had on the twelfth. Aw I believe it was the following day that in fact vice-president pence is a visit to the inauguration was cancelled after my phone. Call the conversation conversation that I laid out to. Mr Schaffer was basically what I was told to do. By Giuliani of the president. And then afterwards I relate back to them saying that he's going to get back to me later tonight and we're supposed to meet then around eight o'clock or nine o'clock at night. I texted back against saying any word. What's the situation and at that point Because because
Video appears to show missile hit object in sky
"We start today with breaking news in our world lead multiple. US officials and the prime ministers of Canada and the UK are all now saying the intelligence indicates the passenger plane that crashed in Iran Wednesday morning. Killing all one hundred. Seventy six people on board was shot down by Iran possibly accidentally gently the British prime minister saying just minutes ago. There was a quote body of information showing in Iranian surface to air. Missile brought down that passenger plane brand new video sent to CNN purports to show a missile fired into the sky and striking an object right around the time that Ukrainian Airlines flight the craft CNN is trying but has not yet independently verified the authenticity of the video and another new video purporting to show the fiery moment that Ukrainian Airlines flight hit the ground just minutes after taking off from Tehran airport. Our correspondents are covering this story from every angle including on the ground in Iran. But we're GONNA start with. CNN's Alex smart who has new reporting about how this plane full of civilians may have been shot down by accident in the wake of the tragic Ukrainian Iranian plane crash in Iran us. Allied officials now saying Iran shot it down with two Russian made surface to air missiles killing all one hundred seventy six. The people on board most of the victims were from Iran Ukraine and Canada we have intelligence from multiple sources including our allies and our own own intelligence. The evidence indicates that the plane was shot down by an Iranian surface to air missile. This may well. We'll have been unintentional Wednesday's crash coming just hours after the Iranian regime launched over a dozen missile at US forces inside inside Iraq president trump. Today agreeing it was unlikely that the Boeing seven thirty-seven was brought down due to a mechanical failure. It was flying at a pretty rough neighborhood hood and somebody could made a mistake. I some people say it was mechanical person. I don't think that's even question. Eyewitness video shows a fireball. Terrible believed to be the plane going down a huge blast as it hits the ground a US official familiar with the intelligence that the two missiles were Russian essay fifteenth a surface to air missile the US saw Iranian radar signals lock onto the jet liner before it was shot down minutes. After taking off early Wednesday morning the plane had turned back to the Tehran airport but never made it so far. Iran has refused to hand over. The plane's black boxes at the fact that the pilots were very very experienced. The fact that they'd flown this route before I all of these things Seem to play into the idea that that some external force may have forced the aircraft out today. Mourners gathered at the airport in Ukraine's capital where the plane was due to land rose portrait's of the dead and a flood of tears. I Ukrainian mother of pilot crying. He was my only son now. I'm all by myself. Ukraine craned for its part has not yet said that the plane was brought down by Iran. They have sent a team to Tehran to carry out an investigation. They've also asked the British and Canadians to help help them now. Ukrainian President Voters Alinsky has thanked the Iranians for access and for their cooperation. And he does say Jake expects the team to get access to. The plane's black boxes says Jake Alex Marquardt with the latest minutes ago Ron announced it was inviting the. US TO BE PRESENT WHILE IT investigates the crash C. N. N. senior international correspondent for quite keen is live in in the capital city of Tehran. Fred what does that mean for the next steps in this investigation well it means that the US could send a representative is ended here specifically Boeing could send a representative. It's interesting because the Iranian news agency. A- Jake that put that report. The News Agency said that Boeing had allegedly already designated resonated a representative but there might be problems with sending that representative because of the international sanctions against Iran. We've also reached out to Boeing itself. We're still waiting to see what sort of answer there could be. Meanwhile ever the investigation of course is moving forward. I we were actually able to get in touch with the head of Iran Civil Aviation Authority which forces the body that would oversee such an investigation. We confronted him with that information that we've been getting from the intelligence services saying that the Iranians may have shot that plane down. He didn't deny that that could be the case however he did say that he had doubts about whether it was the case he said that if the plane had been hit by a missile it would go down immediately. Just fall from the sky and that they wouldn't attempt or the pilot wouldn't have been able to attend to fly back to Imam Khomeini airport so try to cast some doubt there on the information but again not flat out denying that Iran Iranian missile could've taken down that plane as far as the black boxes are concerned. I think is something that's really important Jake. The Iranians Romanians are saying that they have the capability to read those black boxes however they are saying one of those black boxes is damage. Not sure whether they can read it. They claim that tomorrow. Iranian inspectors and Ukrainian inspectors which Alex is said in. His report are already on the ground here are going to try and get the information from those black boxes axes together however they also say the Iranians that because these boxes are damaged that might be impossible and then they might ask the French or the Canadians for health. Jake all right Fred Plight. Ken in Tehran. Thank you so much. Be Safe joining me. Now is C. N. N.'s Richard Quest. Who Covers Aviation Richard now that A? US official has confirmed a cause. Now that we've heard this from the British and the Canadian. How important is it to learn? What's on the black box? It is very important in the sense that you we'll have the data you will be able to see what immediately happened to the aircraft when the explosion took place but Take I think more important than the plot boxes. Because they won't tell you why the most important thing is the wreckage the wreckage the physical wreckage fifty and delicacy the remains of those who were on board because they will have the explosive residue. That will confirm what happened happened. But in all of this. There's a much much easier way to determine what took place the Iranians can simply at mit if they did if it was then then missile that brought down the plane otherwise everybody else will be scrambling for pieces of evidence to prove it before the crash the FAA had banned American Kinney Airlines from flying over Iraq and Iran. Saying they could be misidentified. This happened before should should other countries and airlines have followed suit or at the very least should they have been warned.
Unredacted Ukraine Documents Reveal Extent of Pentagon's Legal Concerns
"The politics lead now amidst the presidential impeachment involving withheld White House meeting for the President of Ukraine Secretary of State. Mike pompeo cancelled his planned trip to Ukraine bear. He would have met with Ukrainian Presidents Alinsky. The State Department saying Pompeo did so so in order to monitor the violence surrounding Iraqi embassy. This news comes as new reporting from the website just security showing us. What's behind some of those black lines James? In the redacted emails the trump administration was forced to hand over to those requesting it which include warnings from the Pentagon that the hold on military Ukraine rain broke the law and that the decision withhold the aid came right from the top. CNN Sara Murray reports in the face of mornings from the Pentagon on that holding nearly four hundred million dollars in Ukraine could be illegal. A top budget official made it clear. The orders were coming directly from the President Clear Direction from Port Chris to continue to hold Michael Duffy. Atop Office of Management and budget official wrote in an email to Defense Department Comptroller Elaine mccusker on August thirtieth national security focused website just security reviewed the unredacted emails which had previously been released by the trump administration with heavier reductions. The emails reportedly show that weeks. Earlier mccusker flagged concerns that if the hold wasn't lifted soon the Pentagon couldn't guarantee all of the money would reach Ukraine and time. The emails highlight the finger pointing between Owen. Be and the Defense Department over the freeze on Ukraine funds today no MB. Spokesperson said. There was agreement every step of the way between Dod and lawyers who are responsible eligible for working out the details of the hold in line with the president's priorities Defense Department officials disagreed. One said we were always concerned about the ramifications sins of holding the military assistance to Ukraine the new details come as the impeachment proceedings remain in limbo White House. Aides were in touch with Senate majority leader. Mitch McConnell's office over the holidays. But when the Senate returns tomorrow McConnell plans to continue business as usual until Nancy Pelosi officially transmits the articles of impeachment. Each mint your house. Democrats seem to be suggesting they'd prefer never to transmit the articles Democratic lawmakers including Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer are already seizing on these emails pointing to them as evidence that any kind of fair trial in the Senate is going to need to include documents documents and witnesses from the trump administration. Jake all right Sara Murray. Thanks so much and this is how Nancy Pelosi just responded to these new emails on a tweet trump engaged in unprecedented resonated total obstruction of congress hiding these emails all other documents and his top aides from the American people. His excuse was a phony complain about the house process. What's the excuse now? Why won't trump McConnell allow a fair trial? What do you make that argument Asia? What it is something that they're going to really drill down on these unredacted emails? They really do raise questions because you had ownby general counsel has sent a letter to the GAO so Basically saying that that they had held up this money and that the reason why they held up this money that but it didn't really make a big difference. That dod was telling them that there was no risk that this money wouldn't go out but what you see in. These emails is the direct opposite of what will be said that there was a risk that this money was going to be held up and there was a legal concern and this goes to the heart of what kind of Republicans have been saying that this was just people. This was just the deep state. They just disagreed with policy but the concern that we're being raised. Were not about policy. They were about legal issues. People in the Dod thought that this was illegal that they were withholding this money. I and here's this. One unredacted email from August thirtieth of last year from Michael Duffy. He's Office of Management and budget official to Elaine mccusker. She's a Pentagon comptroller. Roller mentions the quote clear direction from Potus President of the United States to continue to hold this obviously flies right in the face of those who are saying. There's nothing meantime president trump to this and. I don't think that many people actually believed that the number of Publicans elected officials the real people people the the the number who think it was a perfect call and there was nothing here is fairly low. The question is again whether that rises to the point point they want him removed. And that's a real open question. I'm not real sure what we're doing at this point. Are we going to transmit the articles of impeachment. Are we going to Redo the thing in the house because as we have more information or they just asking to be in control of the Senate rules and all of that sounds like Gobbledygook. That's what it sounds like to normal people as well and it will continue to sound like that which is y this is sort of stagnant and has been for quite some time and that part matters one of these I would say yes and no right if Democrats keep it very simple which is the president of the United States should tell the truth. Why are you blocking material evidence because every time in the last couple of weeks we've got new information? It undermines the president so it looks like he's using his power or to protect himself. And why won't you let these people come forward and testify now when we went through the house proceedings. Republicans kept saying well. These people don't have direct knowledge. Okay so now now Schumer saying we want people with direct knowledge. This report gives us more information from security. That gives an actually the New York Times even earlier. This week gives us more information of exactly. What kind of direct knowledge these individuals hat and their participation so I think if Democrat now that they're in this phase of negotiating? I'm sure tomorrow is going to be full of lots of bluster on the Senate floor. That'll be great. However I think this gives Schumer and Pelosi some leverage? It's not just about Mitch McConnell. It's about those senators who are vulnerable honorable right that doesn't move those needle move Nina with those enough Republicans. Four Republican senators. What would be needed for anything at the end of the day? Fifty one votes wins. I haven't seen that yet collins and Murkowski who expressed concerns but then they also say we're concerned with the democratic process or in case she said I'm open to waiting on the witnesses until after the case so if they're not willing to get behind Democrats in this push for firsthand witnesses and documents. It's just not going to happen. Would you look like you're about to say yeah. I'm just. I'm just skeptical. That there's enough enthusiasm to on this issue on the issue of witnesses inside a Senate trial among Americans wants to put enough pressure on a couple of senators for them to go. Oh Yeah we're GONNA change the way we do this. I can hardly and buck McConnell. It's very hard to imagine a president venting about a lot of things on twitter today as want quoted a conservative commentator from the NOCCO saying quote. It seems the Democrats have shot themselves in the foot in one one more way and this president is being persecuted over three years with one investigation after another and and that really plays to his base. It's it's an argument to me because I mean things are not clear cut here. We had the impeachment proceeding. And then it's just kind of as Mayor Catherine some points on hold and we're not really sure what's going to happen and the country is divided right like even though some polls have shown that the majority of the country thinks that he did something wrong that the president president did something wrong. They are divided on what happens next And so I think probably what you're having now is a Democrat trying to decide. What are they what type of pressure they can really put on president trump? He was saying that he wanted a trial but in the past few days. He's kind of been hinting that maybe he doesn't care what happens. I think he wants to be vindicated. I I think he's GonNa want some type of trial but it's not clear how much the Democrats are really going to be able to dictate that. Are they putting the Democrats putting enough pressure directly on Susan Collins. Lisa Murkowski Mitt Romney any other vulnerable Republican with ads with democratic grassroots activists. I mean I haven't seen that I agree with you. I haven't seen enough of it. I think there have been some efforts. It was a little bit challenging. I think during the holidays now that we're back in January. I think it'll be a lot easier and again as long as as they keep it simple. I think there is a very fair argument to be made about the facts and the
Putin and Zelensky hold landmark talks
"Vladimir Putin Russia met with President Vladimir Leninsky of Ukraine for the first time on Monday at a summit in Paris to try to end five years of war between in Ukrainian troops and moscow-backed separatists both sat down at the French presidential palace along with the leaders of France and Germany for talks focused. Oh Qassam reviving a two thousand fifteen peace agreement for eastern Ukraine that has largely stalled since two thousand fourteen. The war has killed. Fourteen thousand. Listen people emboldened the Kremlin and reshaped European geopolitics. A major breakthrough is unlikely and Ukrainian protesters in Kiev. A heaping pressure on the new leader. Not to surrender too much to Putin. WHO's been in office nearly twenty years but the fact that Putin and Zilenski ski metal was a significant step after years of war Putin and Celeski faced each other across the table flanked by French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angle merckel whatever happens? The summit is the biggest test yet for Zielinski a comic actor and political novice who won the presidency this year in a landslide partly on promises to end the war. Walls alinsky still enjoys broad public support. He has been embarrassed. Embarrassed by the scandal around discussions with Donald trump that unleashed an impeachment inquiry in Washington. The US is an important military backer for a Ukraine which is largely outgunned by Russia while the US was never a part of this peace process. US backing has strengthened Ukraine's overall negotiating Shiite position with Russia in the past now that support is increasingly in doubt after the trump administration froze military aid earlier this year and is increasingly really focused on trump's reelection bid with US influence waning around the world many in Kiev see one clear winner. House Judiciary Committee Impeachment Hearings Right Here
"And we begin tonight with the Astorg next step in the impeachment inquiry at a very combative one that played out today. On Capitol Hill the heated proceedings in front of the House Judiciary Committee the witnesses. Constitutional Law Scholars. who were asked was president? Trump's conduct on Ukraine impeachable. Three witnesses telling the committee yes arguing. The president abused his power for his own personal political game. The Republican witness saying the Democrats. Don't have the evidence that this is being rushed and tonight the unexpected moment when one of the witnesses brought up the president's youngest son to make a point it was not well received by many tonight. She's apologizing president trump meanwhile L. flying back to Washington tonight and lashing out this evening. What we've learned the president's team already looking ahead to what they want it? A Senate trial Terry Moran Lead US off from the hill tonight tonight. It was a highly partisan and dramatic day the first high stakes hearing in the judiciary committee featuring constitutional scholars and the issue before the panel does the evidence show that what president trump did on Ukraine rises to the level of an impeachable. Offense President has shown us his pattern of conduct. If we do not ah act to hold them in check now. President trump will almost certainly try again to solicit interference in the election for his personal political legal game. But this is not an impeachment. This is just a simple railroad job in today's is a waste of time right out of the gate three out of the four scholars. The ones chosen by Democrats testified that the president should be impeached. And I just want to stress that if this were if what we're talking about is not impeachable the nothing is impeachable if we cannot impeach a president who abuses his office for personal advantage we no longer live in a democracy. That's why the framers created the possibility of impeachment. The very idea that the president might seek the aid of a foreign government in his reelection campaign would have horrified them based on the evidentiary record. That is what President Trump has done Stanford law professor. Pamela Carlin said the president's alleged actions withholding nearly four hundred million dollars in USA approved by Congress simply for personal political. Gain has never happened before the evidence reveals a president who used the powers of his office to demand that a foreign government participate in undermining competing candidate for the presidency. Tendency Garland said over the Thanksgiving holiday. She read every with this transcript and she pointed out what she found. Most troubling and the most chilling line for me of the entire process was the following ambassador. Silence said he had to announce the investigations. He's talking about a presence Alinsky had to announce the investigations he. He didn't actually have to do them as I understood it. And then he said I never heard Mr Goldman anyone say that the investigations had to start or had to be completed. The only thing I heard from Mr Giuliani or otherwise was they had to be announced in some form and what I took that to mean was this was not about whether Vice President Biden actually actually committed corruption or not. This was about injuring. Somebody who the president thinks of as a particularly a particularly hard opponent donents but law professor Jonathan Turley called by Republicans said he did not vote for trump but he is still troubled by the Democrats impeachment inquiry in an agitated good time in our country. I get it. You're mad. The president's mad my Republican friends are mad. My Democratic friends. Rents are mad. My wife is mad. My kids are mad. Even my dog seems mad. He's a Democrats. Don't would have the evidence they need. There's a difference between requesting investigations and a quid pro quo. You need to stick the landing on quid pro quo. You need to get the evidence to support it. It might be out there. I don't know but it's not in this record. And he added. The Democrats are rushing this. It's a the perfect storm. You set an incredibly short period. Demand a huge amount of information and when the president goes to court you then impeach him in Nixon listen to the courts and Nixon lost and that was the reason. Nixon resigned house speaker. Nancy Pelosi Oh surging house democrats quote. Are you ready. While Vice President Mike Pence Rallying Republicans to turn up the heat on the Democrats and back in that hearing room. Republicans were were furious when one of those law professors argued that the constitution does not make trump a king driving the point home with a quip about the president's son done so while the president can name his son Barron. He can't make him a baron. When you invoke the president sons named here when you try to make a little joke out out of referencing Barron trump that does not lend credibility to your argument? It makes you look mean it makes you look like you're attacking someone's family the minor child of the president of the United States. So let's see if we can get into the facts to all of the witnesses. If you have personal knowledge of a single material fact in the shift report please raise your hand and let the record reflect no personal knowledge of a single fact so after that moment today. Let's get to Terry Moran Tonight as live on the hill in Terry I the apology. Not just in tonight from that law scholar who brought up the president's youngest son that's right Stanford Law Professor Pamela Cartland at the end of the hearing said this I want to apologize for what I said earlier about the president's son. It was wrong of me to do that it was. I wish the president would apologize. Obviously for the things that he's done that are wrong but I do regret having he said that. In the meantime Terry where does this go from here. It seems to be moving very quickly and news tonight from the president's legal team suggesting they believe a Senate trial is a certainty. And what do they want a senior trial. The president is a tough litigator and he's planning a scorched earth defense they want a full Senate trial including the president wants to the ability to call witnesses. Braff perhaps live in the Senate chamber itself He wants the Republican leadership has already blocked out the entire month of January. This is essentially eventually away and no one should be surprised at the president using the trial to put his accusers on trial.
Impeachment report accuses Trump of compromising national security
"And we're back with the Breaking News Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee putting out there impeachment report this afternoon. Noonday accused president trump of undermining national security in his quote Ukraine scheme and engaging in a quote unprecedented campaign of obstruction of this impeachment inquiry. Tomorrow the House Judiciary Committee is anticipated to hold. Its first public hearing with four legal experts under oath joining me now to talk about this as one of the members of the judiciary this year committee. Who will be in that hearing tomorrow? Republican Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner Wisconsin who also helped lead the Clinton impeachment in the House Congressman Sensenbrenner. Thanks so much for for joining us. I want to begin with this new report. It says this quote. The president placed his own personal and political interests above the national interests of the United States sought to undermine the integrity of the the US presidential election process and endangered US national security unquote. Now I know you do not think that president trump asking presidents Alinsky to investigate the Biden's was out of bounds. Is there anything in the report. Change your mind well. I got the report. Our goal is over three hundred pages long and I do speed read but not quite that fast you know. Let me say that I don't think the president has committed an impeachable offense. No no president should be above the law but they shouldn't be below the law either and what trump said. The president's Alinsky was. Can you do me a favor. Now if that is an impeachable offense than what about then Vice President Biden saying I'm hold up a billion dollars of aid unless you fired the prosecutor in six hours and bragging about The problem I think is that this is a moving target and there are a lot of people including a lot of my colleagues who have hated trump from the beginning. You do not impeach a president because of policy differences princes or because you hate him and didn't vote for him and we're sorry that he would there has to be something more serious than that and telling the president of Ukraine. Will you do me. A favor is not serious. Thing that the framers thought it should be the Biden thing. I don't want to get off on a path here. But the Biden thing I was obviously something thing that even Republicans the International Monetary Bank others were calling for the International Monetary Fund or others. Were calling for that prosecutor to be fired. That Eh may very well be so g but not the way that Biden framed it when he came back here and bragged about it. So at least we didn't stop the country for for a couple of years Having an impeachment inquiry on him the Intelligence Committee is vital to our national security so they spent the last three months launch not doing the oversight of intelligence that we need but going on and impeachment which still congressman as simple as that. So you talked about how you don't think that that phone call. Paul demonstrates anything wrong because the president phrase it has do me a favor. Democrats in the report argued that the call between trump ends Alinsky was just a quote dramatic crescendo with a month long campaign driven by President Trump. That for months there had been this effort involving president trump and multiple senior officials officials in an involved. Also president trump withholding a visit to the Oval Office for Presidents Alinsky. And of course that three hundred ninety one million dollars of security that was ultimately released after the whistle blower came through. Well neither trump nervous alinsky said that there was a quid. Pro Quo involve number one Zilenski Alinsky wasn't even aware at the time that The it was being held out and September eleventh which was about six six weeks after the call. The aid was released and Ukraine out the money after the whistle blower came forward. Well after the whistle blower came forward but we also oughta realize that Ukraine is probably the most corrupt country in Europe and one in the world and I think we all ought to be assured assured that when we do release foreign aid to any other country that money is being used for the purpose for which it was sent and not ending up in somebody's pocket rocket or Swiss bank account. So I guess one of the other points that the Democrats are trying to make here is that this is setting a precedent and that if republicans allow this to be deemed acceptable than in the future a President Elizabeth Warren could press China to investigate. Jared Kushner Kushner family when they promoted investor visas in that country or president. Buddha judge could ask Azerbaijan to look into the trump tower deal there. They're all sorts of allegations of corruption. That would be okay with you for a Democratic president to ask a foreign country to do them a favor and look into political rivalry. Well we have mutual legal Assistance treaties with most countries. So if there is a violation of US law where there's evidence in a foreign country. The M lad ends up requiring the foreign foreign country to cooperate with us but this goes much deeper than that goes back to the way the framers set up our government and that was is that the executives should not it be dependent upon having majority in the parliament or in the congress in our case develop separation of powers and Adam Schiff and his crowd completely thrown separation of powers in the waste basket. So if we ever in the future have a president of one party in a majority the House and another party the Congress is going to repeat this mistake not do the people's business in be involved in a two or a four year along which on the tried to boot the president who is elected by the American people out of office. So that's what we're seeing here. I WANNA play for our viewers. Your opening statement statement before the House Judiciary Committee in Nineteen Ninety eight hundred. You are talking about President. Clinton he has not owned up to the false testimony the stonewalling stonewalling the obstructing has used legal hair-splitting and redefinition of words. To perpetuate those lies. The president lied obstructed structed and abused power. I think a lot of people will see that clip and think. Yeah you get offended when Democrats abused power but you don't get offended when Republicans have used power. There is a big difference. Kenneth Starr who is an independent investigator. Which Adam Schiff is not you know ended up doing doing a lengthy investigation sent us? Thirty six boxes worth of evidence and said that Clinton lied both in a civil deposition and in grand injury testimony under oath. That's the big difference. Whatever trump did or didn't do on that phone call was not under old it was not not in a judicial proceeding where the courts have to have the truth in order
Trump Denies Giuliani Acted on His Behalf in Ukraine: 'Rudy Has Other Clients'
"I WANNA play a clip of an interview with Donald Trump and his and his old buddy man who used have a cable show until he was fired because of so many accusations of sexual arrangement this is donald trump talking about rudy. Giuliani whose intimated he has insurance against the president and won't run the bus over him and this is what Donald Trump is now saying about him. Take a listen. So what was Rudy Giuliani. Doing in Ukraine on your behalf. Where you have to ask that to rudy but Rudy I? I don't even know I. I know he was going to go to Ukraine and I think he cancelled a trip But you know Rudy has other clients other than me. I'm one direct him to go there on your behalf. You didn't know but you have to understand. Rudy is a great corruption fighter. I mean there's so much that's fascinating about this betsy but the first thing that sticks Out To me is you'RE GONNA have to ask is literally what he said about. Michael Kohn back in April eighteen. When he was I asked about the animals? He said you're going to have to ask Michael and look where Michael ended up right did not have a happy ending for for Mr Cohen Trump. Telling people to talk to rudy kind of ironically also matches. What what he was telling? Some of his senior administration officials called him with questions about Ukraine. He said go talk to Rudy. The reality is rudy. Unquestionably was one of the trump himself. Senior on voice too key while this entire process was playing out and everybody knew it that Ukrainians new at the Americans knew trump trump nuit rudy. New at there was no mystery to this and remember part of the reason that there's such a robust conversation about whether or not to expand the number of witnesses. This is testifying before the impeachment inquiry is that we haven't actually heard from people who were really really in the weeds with Rudy himself. On the work he was doing for the president resident. Love Parnassus a person who would potentially be able to provide that testimony Andrea earmark. who was an aide to the president of Ukraine who met with Rudy shortly after after the trump as Alinsky phone call year? Mock told me on the record that led Parnasse was at the table when he and Rudy had a conversation that has now proven to the incredibly faithful Peres hasn't yet testified. So there's a lot of information out there that congressional Democrats still don't have a great point as for Rudy Swim. I mean debates. He's he's point he literally tells Linski on the phone call to talk to rudy. He tells them you talk to people. Will you borrow Rudy. He I mean he will try because he tries to do this. All this things things and just sort of like Ben Reality News will but there is just no question. He's directing people to get in contact with Rudy. No absolutely and look like as betsy was mentioning earlier about how India Open and how public this was and it wasn't actually a secret at best. It was an open secret. That Giuliani was acting on president. Trump's behalf unrest is he was telling reporters on the record for months in in a very loquacious manner in the months leading up to the scandal before the long before the impeachment inquiry was even lauch. And when when he would talk about it to reporters at various outlets including at the daily beast he would repeatedly say how he was. Keeping President. Trump abreast yes leafed on all of his progress progress so if president trump wants turn around now and talk about how oh he was doing his own thing well. There were numerous opportunities from to tell his lawyer to knock get the hell off if he actually wanted US win. Su- sang and Betsy Woodruff Swan. Thank you both your time
Trump Welcomes a Senate Impeachment Trial
"Welcome to the lead on Jake Tapper. We begin today with the politics. Lead president trump practically daring house. Democrats to impeach him and declaring he welcomes a senate trial across process that could theoretically get underway by Christmas. Now we've now heard and seen twelve witnesses testifying publicly seven hearings over five days while everyone sorting through the testimony. We should note that the most damning evidence came. I'm straight from the Horse's mouths fact. President trump asked the Ukrainian president to investigate the bites. We know this not only because the rough transcript of the July twentieth call of the White House released but because president trump admitted it publicly. Yeah well I would think that if they were honest about it that SORTA major investigation into the Bison is very simple very simple answer indeed and what was the trump administration willing to do to secure secure this investigation into the bites. Were they willing to hold off a White House meeting which Presidents Alinsky desperately wanted to show US support to his public look into Putin. Well here's US ambassador to the EU. Gordon Zahn want. I know that members of this committee frequently frame. These complicated issues in the form of a simple question was there a quid pro quo as I testified previously with regard to the requested White House call and the White House meeting. The answer is yes. Yes silent says no question it was a quid pro quo. Hey Ukraine you want the White House meeting you need to announce these investigations. Okay now. What about that four hundred million dollars in USA? That Ukraine crane also desperately wanted well acting White House Chief-of-staff Mick Mulvaney explained why that was held up. He said so on camera now. He said he did so. So the president because the president wanted an investigation into Ukraine's role in the two thousand sixteen election. The look back to what happened happened in two thousand sixteen certainly was part of the thing that he was worried about in corruption with that nation. That is absolutely yup is a quid. Pro for funding will not flow unless the investigation into into Democratic Server. Happened as well. We do that all the time with with foreign policy and I have news for everybody get over it. There's going to be political influence in foreign policy. So yes there was a quid pro quo on the military aid and the other eight four hundred million dollars worth according to Mulvaney now two points on what Mulvaney said there one. He later tried to unseat what he said. And two veins portraying this as trying to get Ukraine to participate in a Justice Department investigation into two thousand sixteen but that is consistently. I'm not what president trump says he wants. President trump wants a look into a debunked conspiracy theory about Ukraine and the DNC server that US intelligence officials say was hacked by Russia not by Ukraine. Now this is just a fraction of the public evidence though these are facts seldom even acknowledged by the president's defenders. Facts are on our side. The facts are not facts are on the side. The truth is on the president's side the truth truth is the president of the United States by his own. Admission asked the foreign power to launch a major investigation into his political rival. Joe Biden his son and into a debunked conspiracy theory. These are investigations. That would help president trump politically and according to the president's own aides. The president used used a White House meeting and four hundred million taxpayer dollars to get Ukraine to do it now. You can debate whether or not it's criminal. You can debate whether or not it's impeachable impeachable. But you cannot debate whether or not those are the facts a CNN. Sara Murray reports Democrats are preparing to move forward with articles of impeachment. The president trump says bring it on. He's ready for an impeachment trial in the Senate Brinkley. I want to try. The Republican Party party has never been more unified Republican. Lawmakers have been working with the White House to prepare for a possible Senate trial coalescing around the notion that a long exhaustive Austin process may be the best course to protect the president. But I the house will have its say the house. Intelligence Committee and two other panels are crafting a report to serve but as the basis for articles of impeachment. Have the house. Judiciary Committee will consider after Thanksgiving. We have to decide. What does it mean and once we conclude our investigation If we decide that it means that the president should be held accountable. Democratic sources say a busy December is a head filled with public hearings and a likely vote in the House Judiciary Committee before before a full vote to impeach on the House floor which could come before Christmas Day. Potentially making trump the third president in history to be impeached. The House Democrats don't plan to wait for firsthand. Witnesses who have resisted testifying like acting chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney Secretary of state. Mike Pompeo and former national national security adviser John Bolton they keep taking it to court and a no. We're not going to wait until the courts decide that might be information. That's available to the Senate. We can't wait for that because again. It's a technique it's obstruction of justice. Then in January. The impeachment battle is expected addition to the Senate where trump's fate will collide with six Democratic senators looking to unseat him in the next presidential election. I will be there for the trial you swear or but after weeks of hearings impassioned arguments from Democrats. This president believes he is above the law beyond accountability. And in in my view there is nothing more dangerous than unethical president. WHO believes there are above the law? Even Republican has been critical of trump. Don't appear convinced impeachment. It is the remedy an impeachable offense should be compelling overwhelmingly clear and unambiguous. I've not heard evidence proving. The President committed bribery or extortion. Now the White House legal team believes that is one hundred percent in the president's interest to have this public trial in the Senate. Jake it seems like we will soon find out if they are right all right Sarah Murray. Let's discuss with our team here today. Let me start with you because we heard from one democratic more credit congressman Brad Sherman today. Who said that in his? You wouldn't hurt to get more information so I guess the question is do you think. Democrats have made sufficient efficient case. Should they. I mean this idea that they're not gonNA wait for the courts they're not gonNA take too long etc those. Those are not arguments about the substance of of the evidence. Those are arguments about timing and politics show. Should they keep going well. I mean first of all timing and politics do matter so I think that that is something they have to take into consideration. I think think they made a case for anybody who wants to actually look at the case honestly and take the information honestly. I think they made an absolutely airtight case. You know the president it has done something. That's impeachable the Republicans don't want to absorb that information and I actually don't think it would make any difference whether it was John. Paul Moulton was up there overdue. Where did you Liana if there was some how able to even get these people to testify? There is nothing I just really can't think of anything that would make the Republicans change their mind because what has been demonstrated over. The last week is so horrifying and so clear and they can still sit there and say well it's inappropriate. It's so far beyond inappropriate. Every argument that they've made has been completely destroyed so they came out and made all these defenses. That one by one were knocked down They're laugh with no defenses. It's up to just say well it's bad but it's not impeachable. So the argument that she's making here is basically the house. Republicans and Senate Republicans are just not good faith. Operators there's there's no evidence it's going to convince them even if president trump literally were to shoot somebody on fifth avenue and everybody saw it. Yeah that may be true. But I think there's a gap that gives Republicans particularly in the Senate the opening if House Democrats want to make the charge of bribery or extortion. However you put it you need to prove that
What is the 'fictional narrative' a White House ex-adviser warns against?
"Hill a former White House advisor and David Holmes Current. US diplomat or the latest and possibly final witnesses to testify publicly in the impeachment inquiry and they gave different views of US policy efforts in Ukraine. Joining me now. From Washington with more details as Wall Street Journal reporter Chaban Hughes Assoc Yvonne in her opening statement Fiona Hill warned lawmakers against what she called a fictional narrative or alternative narrative. She was referencing a theory. That Ukraine had interfered feared in the two thousand sixteen. US elections something. President trump had wanted Kiev to investigate. Can you explain more about this theory. And what hill had to say about it. Well there earned multiple prongs to the theory. There's not any single incident that Republicans use when an advancing this theory but among them is the fact that our one time investigative journalist who was later in the Ukrainian legislature publicize something called the Black Ledger which purported to show some large payments made to a number breath people by a pro Russian president including Paul Manafort the fact of that disclosure. They say helped take out a trump campaign official another piece of evidence. Republican side is an OP. Ed Written Twenty Sixteen by Ukraine's ambassador and which he questioned some of Mr Trump's remarks about Russia and Crimea missile. An Mr Holmes had explanations for all of those they said that in no way did it amount to the sort of top down directed propaganda campaign that Russia had engaged in and Ms Hill in particular really said that the narrative about Ukrainian interference was damaging that absolutely absolutely set Republicans off. They were very sensitive. They said it was unfair to accuse them of having undermined the Russian meddling idea that really is backed up by the entire. US Intelligence Community and Democrats stamp down on that and said Republicans absolutely had been part of undermining the theory about Russian Russian interference in the US elections. So how about David. Holmes did any of his testimony aligned with hills and in what ways did it differ so Mr Holmes and Fiona Hill are coming from two different vantage points David. Holmes is in Ukraine at the embassy. He's a political adviser paying attention to Ukrainian politics. Tech's Ms Hill is in Washington at the National Security Council trying to coordinate a whole bunch of agencies to come together around a focused Ukraine policy so the each present different sides of the picture Mr Holmes in particular could describe overhearing that conversation between President Trump and Dan. US Ambassador to the European Union. Gordon Sandra and which a day after that July twenty fifth phone call Mr Trump asks about the investigations and Gordon. Zong indicates that Ukraine's Presidents Alinsky is fully on board. That was a big one for him. Fiona Hill walked us through really some of the highlights of her closed-door door deposition that day on that she blew up at Gordon. sunlen asking him. Who gave you control of the Ukraine portfolio and Gordon? sunlen comes back doc and says the president did Fiona Hill testifying. She realizes she was quite rude. But that Gordon Zone response had infect shut her up and today we heard I heard Ms Hill. Say in fact. In retrospect I think that Gordon Sunland was right and even though I was angry with him for not looping me into meetings I see he now why he did that. We were on different missions. His instructions had come from the president and mine were of a totally different nature. His was political and about a domestic mystic matter. Mine was about our national security
Impeachment hearings: Sondland says quid pro quo was pushed by Giuliani and ordered by Trump
"In what could be one of the most consequential moments in Donald Trump's presidency. The the financial backer he appointed to serve in Basser to the European Union is implicating him along with the vice president and other senior members of the trump administration and testifying there was was a quid pro. Quo Gordon. Lynn is the most directly involved witness. Date draw connection between Ukraine. Securing things it wanted in exchange for investigations is that would politically benefit president trump. We have more from. NPR's miles parks summoned said. The connection was related to him. By trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani. Mr Giuliani's lianis requests. Were a quid pro quo for arranging a White House visit for presidents alinsky silence testimony has also further involved a number we're of high level officials in the trump administration including Secretary of state. Mike Pompeo everyone was in the loop. It was no secret someone. Someone also says. He relayed concerns about connecting foreign aid with political investigations in a conversation with vice president pence in September. But Pence's chief of staff released a statement today saying that conversation never
Impeachment hearings: Tuesday was a disaster for Republicans
"Impeachment proceedings against President trump were a doubleheader today with hearings both this morning starting at nine. Am Eastern and men another marathon hearing this afternoon starting at three o'clock eastern extending well into the evening tonight ending less than a half an hour ago. Now the the second hearing today the afternoon and evening session that just ended was tactically a first though because the two witnesses were called specifically in the impeachment hearing this afternoon were the first witnesses who were specifically requested by the Republicans on the committee. Now we don't know exactly why hi. The Republicans on the committee were so eager to call these particular witnesses today. It kind of seems clear from how it went with them today that the Democrats would have been just as is happy to call them to if the Republicans hadn't but this is specifically who the Republicans wanted and it seems like it's probably Lee not the way they had wanted it to go does not credible to me. That former vice president biden would have been influenced in any way by financial or personal motives in carrying out his duties as vice president. I don't think that raising twenty sixteen elections or vice president and Biden or these these things I consider to be conspiracy theories that have been circulated by the Ukrainians particularly the former prosecutor. General are are we there not things that we should be pursuing as part of our national security strategy with Ukraine at the one in person meeting I had with Mayor Giuliani on July. Nineteenth mayor. Giuliani raised and I rejected the conspiracy. Theory that Vice President Biden would have been influenced in his duties as vice president by money. Money paid to his son as previously testified. I have known vice. President Biden for twenty. Four years is an honorable man and I hold them in the highest regard embassador Kurt Volker who resigned as U S envoy to Ukraine when the impeachment scandal broke. Open a few weeks ago. He was asked to testify testify before these proceedings. He accepted that invitation to testify and he resigned his job What that means though? Because he was the first witness they asked to come in and give a closed-door deposition that tells you that the Democratic leadership of the impeachment committees were happy to hear from Ambassador Volker as a witness in the first instance. I'm I can surmise. That the Democratic leadership of those committees would have been happy calling him again for this public testimony of the type that he went through today that said he was specifically requested Republican witness the Republicans on the committee specifically wanted Ambassador Volker and to Morrison who he testified alongside alongside today. I'm not exactly sure why. The Republican members of the committee were so psyched to have him there today specifically as their witness but there he was it was ambassador Volker and as I mentioned a senior national security official who also recently resigned his post. The man he testified alongside is named Tim Morrison Morrison Morrison on Volcker are the witnesses the Republicans wanted to make sure got their turn before the cameras in these televised hearings but whatever the Republicans motivation was for that honestly. Their testimony wasn't awesome for the President's defense. Not at all quite the contrary now after this larger meeting with the vice president pence presidents Alinsky testified at your deposition that you saw ambassador John Lennon immediately. Go over and pull Andre Earmark aside and have a conversation as president Zone Linski left the room vice president pence left the room and in sort of an anteroom Bashur Samland and presidential adviser. Your had this discussion. Yes Bachelor Sunland Sadie. Tell you that he told Mr Yearbook that the Ukrainians would have to have the prosecutor. Ask You your general Make a statement with respect to the investigations as a condition of having the eight lifted. Now did you tell Ambassador Bolton about this conversation version as well. I reached out to him as well and requested his availability for a secure phone call and what was his response when you explain to him what ambassador Sunland had said. Tell the lawyers now. A few days later on September seventh you spoke again to Ambassador Sunland. Who told you that he had just gotten off the phone with President? Trump isn't that right. That sounds great. Yes what did ambassador Sunlen tell you that. President Trump said to him. If I were called this conversation correctly this was where On related that there was no quid pro quo by presence. Alinsky had to make the statement and that he had to wants wants to do it year by that point. Did you understand that. The statement related to the Biden in a two thousand sixteen investigations. I did yes. And that was a a essentially a condition for the security assistance to be released. I I understood that. That's what embassador sauna believed after speaking with President Trump. That's what he represented. Did you tell Ambassador Bolton about this conversation as well I did. Yes and what did he say to you. He said to tell the lawyers once again what I call them the second time for something like this once again. He told me tell the lawyers do. Do we need a theme song for today. How about tell the lawyers fire up the embroidery hoops day? Three three of the trump impeachment hearings had provided us with yet another set of words to live by words to stitch onto a pillow. At least words words to watch out for in testimony about how the president's own appointees talk to each other when they learned about what the president had been cooking up behind closed doors to don't even tell me talk to the lawyers dude. Are you calling me about another one of these. I said talk to the lawyers. Do you have the lawyer so number. Can you get to the lawyer's office.
Impeachment Hearing Takeaways: Trump request to Ukraine seen as a "demand"
"Started with a whistle blowers complain about President. Trump's contact with a foreign leader had a perfect phone call with the president of Ukraine. Like I mean perfect today. I'm announcing the House of Representatives. Moving forward with an official impeachment inquiry. Good morning everyone. This is the third in a series of public hearings. It'd be holding his part of the house impeachment inquiry. It's Mike Schmidt in the Washington Bureau of the New York Times. Today was another big day of testimony. Testimony AAC coming from four different witnesses split into a morning and afternoon session. Three of these witnesses were actually on the infamous July twenty fifth call between trump and Ukrainian President Alinsky and not surprisingly much to the testimony. Today was about that call. What did these officials think about the call when they heard it? How is it dealt with with? What were the implications of it? Why was it troubling but the latest is that for me? What we really saw today was the Republican Strategy Strategy on display in a way that we hadn't before the best example of this came with how the Republicans treated one of the witnesses? This is in the morning session. The uniform I wear today is that of the United States. Army Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Veneman Vin. Men is the director for European. Repeat Affairs at the National Security Council. He's a career military officer and in his opening statement he describes how his father chose to come to the United States state from the Soviet Union. When my father was forty seven years old he left behind his entire life so his three sons could have a better and safer for lives and the profound sense of duty that instilled in him as a young man? I decided I wanted to spend my life. Serving this nation that gave my family refuge from McCain oppression and he finishes his opening statement by looking straight at the camera and addressing his father Directly Dad. Yeah I'm sitting here today in the. US Capitol talking to our elected professionals is proof that you made the right decision forty years ago to leave the Soviet a union come here to the United States of America. Do not worry I will be fine for telling the truth again for your consideration will be happy to answer your questions. So obviously this is a powerful introduction and immediately set him up as a strong character witness for the Democrats a uniform perform Patriot essentially just trying to do the right thing for his country up. confinment what was your real time reaction to hearing that infamous July twenty fifth call so when Adam Schiff. The committee chairman takes the MIC. He draws on his background in. Ask him what his reaction was. In July twenty fifth call which Vin men had been listening in on it was inappropriate. It was improper for the president to requested to demand an investigation into a political opponent. which vim in characterizes as demand by the president to investigate one of his political rivals? Carl you You've described this as demand. This favor of the president asked Chairman The culture come from the military culture when a senior asks you to do something even if it's play in pleasant it's not to be taken as a request. It's it's to be taken as an order in this case and then it was the Republicans turn to question vitamin and this. He's where we saw this new sharp line of attack from them. I think the ranking member colonel. I want to thank you for your service. Jason sacrificed to our great country. This afternoon your your former boss. Mr Morrison is going to be sitting right where you're sitting. And he's represented Jim Jordan. WHO's sort of been the tip of the spear for the Republicans at these hearings brings up earlier closed door testimony? That been men's boss. Tim Morrison had given Mr Morrison said this. I had concerns about lieutenant. Colonel Kinsman Judgment Jordan says that Morrison as well as Fiona Hill another other National Security Council official had concerns about been men's judgement. So your boss had concerns about your judgment. Your former boss. Dr Hill had concerns about your judgment. Your colleagues had concerns about your judgment. Any idea why they have those impressions. Colonel Yes represented Jordan. I guess I'll start start by the Reading Dr Hill's own words as she she attested to in my last evaluation that was dated inman kind minded deathly responds by taking out his own performance review and reading from what Fiona Hill said about him. Alex is a top one percent military officer and the best army officer. I've worked with in my fifteen years of government service. He's brilliant unflappable. An exercise excellent judgement. So Mr Jordan I would say that I can't say why Mr Morrison question my judgment. Maybe it was a different cultures. There's military so we're seeing here that the Republicans are turning their focus from what the hearing was intended to be about the phone call between trump's events Alinsky to basically fight over who vitamin is his credibility and this has been a talking point of the conservative media. You for weeks here we have A. US National Security official who is advising Ukraine while working inside the White House apparently against the president's interest Republicans in the house or using the exact same rhetoric but now straight to Vince face in the middle of his testimony. Diplomats reveal new details on Ukraine at first impeachment hearing
"Day. One Thousand Twenty eight of the trump administration will go down as day one of the first public impeachment hearings in generation. Today's testimony featured to veterans senior diplomats called upon to lay out the case part of the overall case against the president. Today is testimony brought forth some some new revelations that tied trump closer to the Ukraine pressure campaign ambassador. George Kantha State Department's top expert on Ukraine. And William Taylor Taylor. The current acting ambassador to Ukraine appeared together before the House Intel Committee. Both our top diplomat. Who served under both Republican and democratic like presidents? I represent the third generation of my family to have chosen a career in public service in sworn the oath of office that all. US US public servants. Do in defense of our Constitution. Indeed there has been George Bent sworn to defend the constitution continuously for nearly sixty years. It has been a privilege for me to serve our country and the American people for more than fifty years starting as a cadet at West Point. Is You have mentioned Mr Chairman. That is an infantry officer for six cheers including with one hundred first Airborne Division in Vietnam than at the Department of Energy than as a member of a Senate staff then at NATO than with the State Department right here and abroad in Afghanistan Iraq Jerusalem and Ukraine much of the hearing focused on the July twenty fifth phone call in which President trump trump asked Ukraine's presidents Alinsky for investigations into the Biden and our two thousand sixteen election. The witnesses also described an effort by trump up in his deputies to leverage that country into delivering those investigations if they wanted the promise. US military aid to be used in their fight the Russians by the way it was against that backdrop that ambassador Taylor eventually revealed another pivotal conversation involving trump. That took replace July twenty six the day after the phone call in question. Taylor set a staffer of his recently told him about this conversation involving having the president and the trump donor turned ambassador to the EU. Gordon Sunland member of my staff could hear president trump on the phone asking ambassador ambassador. Sunland the investigations that's toll president trump the Ukrainians were ready to move forward following the call. With president trump trump. The member of my staff asked investor. Solomon what president trump thought about Ukraine. That's the song and responded that President Trump cares more about the investigations of Biden. mm-hmm which Giuliani was pressing for two sources familiar with this matter told NBC News that David Holmes currently the political counselor at the US Embassy. The in Ukraine is the staff member that Taylor was referring to there Taylor Story About Holmes earned homes and invitation at testify which he will do behind closed doors on Friday complicating matters for the Republicans and making him a less easy target. NBC NBC News. Also reports that in twenty fourteen. Mr Holmes won a State Department award for speaking out internally about the Obama Obama Administration policy in Afghanistan. Gordon Sunlen never mentioned this particular call with trump and his closed door testimony before impeachment impeachment investigators trump who spent the day hosting Turkey's president. Erta one at the White House says he was too busy to watch the hearing late today. Trump responded onto this new information however from Ambassador Taylor. I know nothing about that. First Time I've heard the one thing that I've seen that Sandelin said was that He did speak to me for a brief moment. And I said no quid pro quo under any circumstances and that's true in any event that's more second hand end information but I've never heard of conversation I don't recall no not at all. Not even a little bit intelligence committee chairman Adam. Schiff had a very different different. Take on this matter what this call indicates as other testimony has likewise indicated. Is that the instructions coming from the the president on down during the hearing Republicans Slam Taylor
Today The Public Phase Of The Impeachment Inquiry Opens In Washington
"Today today. The public phase of the impeachment inquiry begins in Washington. DC Two witnesses will give evidence on the allegations that president. Donald Trump abused his office for personal personal political gain in his dealings with Ukraine. Well joining me on the line is Scott Lucas. WHO's professor? US politics at the University of Birmingham. Scott why is this being televised. Well this is being televised because we are now at the portion of the impeachment inquiry into Donald Trump where everything everything is to be transparent open because this is a process which could lead to a vote to impeach to indict him and then later trial in the Senate so As was the case in the nineteen seventies as we proceeded towards the impeachment of Richard Nixon. The decision has been made that this will be a televised proceeding with Al- testimony on public record. In contrast to the closed door testimony which was Carried out in preparation over the past two months. And it's really important to to get the the public inside really. Isn't it. Well I think the initial point of this is simply again. This is one of the high or low points if you want to the US S. political system. It is not often that the president has been impeached or is on the cusp of impeachment. This is only the fourth time so I think there's a priority to make it public but as you you do not. There's also a public opinion contest between this Democrats and Republicans will each be making their cases as to whether or not trump should be impeached aged. Donald trump is making his own case through the use of twitter Through some rather bizarre at hot press conferences and so yes the formal proceedings will not be linked to a battle beyond the hearing room in terms of how it is spun how each side presents its case to a wider forum. So how will the Democrats Democrats make their case and will it be enough to move the American public even without talking about the Democrats. Let's just take it from the basis of the facts. What we already know from from the testimony that has been behind closed doors because many of the witnesses provided initial statements that were posted and then over the course of the past? Ten days. Transcripts have been posted that testimony that more than a dozen current. US public officials have said that. Donald Trump carried out an irregular foreign policy in which he made demands of Ukraine including cutting off military to that country including the condition for any visit visit by President to Washington. He said you have to have investigations of a of the presidential candidate. Joe Biden you have to have investigations of the Democratic Party. You have have to have investigations which would cover up Russia's role in the two thousand sixteen election. Those are the facts as they have emerged. The Democrats I think can simply try to draw. Draw out more of that. Beginning with William Taylor This afternoon the current. US charge eight affairs Kiev. What is more interesting to me will be the Republican tactics tactics? Not to illuminate the facts but to divert from them which will be trying to undermine the credibility of the witnesses to try to divert by saying go we must know the identity of the whistle blower the official who made the initial complaint against trump and to be honest with you by misrepresenting which they have already done in certain cases this firsthand testimony supposedly being hearsay but it surely trump never actually said the words. I mean you in order to go for this. You have to understand the the white context and it's whether that's believed or not whether you're referring to two points here regarding the question of whether trump explicitly said you do not get military aid unless you investigate the presidential candidate Joe Biden in the specific phone call on July twenty any fifth to the new Ukrainian President Florida's Alinsky trump doesn't say it explicitly but it is done implicitly. Zilenski says you know we would really like to have military from the United in states because we are threatening this challenge from Russia and trump immediately. Says you know I would really like to have you talked to my people about carrying out investigations including investigations of Joe Biden. Now he doesn't explicitly say. Oh by the way that's because you just referred to military aid but the link there perhaps more importantly it is explicitly licitly stated in the testimony of multiple officials that when Donald Trump froze military aid to Ukraine a few days before that call. He did it as part art putting pressure on Ukraine to accede to his demands so the Republicans not only have to knock back the implicit connection and the phone call they somehow somehow have to undermine each and every one of these witnesses finally quickly before we go. Thanksgiving's been flagged up as a possible end date any later than that it starts. What's eating into campaigning? Time for the twenty twenty elections distinct that timeframes realistic. I actually a couple of weeks in which Congress comes back after Thanksgiving recess before breaking up for Christmas and it's then when I can impeachment vote is possible if not definite Scott. Thank you very much. Indeed that was Scott Lucas and now with a look at the day's headlines His monocle yearning gopher
