Incredible rally in GameStop today, ignoring all valuations, all fundamentals, GameStop, of course, over the last three days, into today up more than 80% as those message portraitures. Hero of the meme stock revolution. Decided to become involved in crypto in different ways, worth talking about getting into NFTs. They had a deal with FTX where they would sell FTX gift cards. Yeah, no, they had this deal with FTX, like you said, to sell the gift cards was this partnership. And it seems unclear what is going to happen here with that. I've reached out to GameStop, have not gotten not heard back from them, but it is interesting. I mean, this was a big, high profile partnership. The GameStop NFT marketplace like other marketplaces has seen sales decline and whether the FTX name will taint them moving forward is a big possibility. In a similar vein to their partnerships with I would describe that as a traditional gaming retailer, FDX sponsored an eSports company called TSM. I think it was one of their larger deals was like more than $200 million in gaming rights. So I have had a theory which I think I've espoused them this podcast that there isn't a lot of room between gaming and crypto not because those things should necessarily be related, but because they tend to appeal to similar kinds of people. In this sort of the grand scheme of eSports, GameStop, et cetera do you think that some of this was like just FTX marketing, being like, we want to get in front of people who might want to trade on our platform. In addition to them all being die hard gamers themselves. Yeah, I mean the eSports deal that was a really big team or is a really big team. So to get on board with them, I think was a huge play. And again, just part of FTX is giant push to get to infiltrate mainstream consciousness. And with, yes, I do think this comes from a personal passion and personal interest from Sam bankman fried, but they're also is a lot of hype about blockchain gaming within the space. Even during this crypto winter, we've seen resilience among crypto venture capital investing. In blockchain gaming, there are these NFT deals still happening. There are still gaming companies that use blockchain who are scoring big valuations and raising funds. So, and even speaking to investors, they see blockchain gaming as a way for the space to survive. And even regain whatever legitimacy it had before, FTX is collapsed. One area that sometimes gets conflated with blockchain gaming is the metaverse. If, as you may have to do in your stories or to your relatives, if you were to explain the difference between these two and who they're trying to appeal to, what would you say? Yeah, it's always a tough thing to explain, but yeah, the metaverse, I always describe it as a more immersive version of the Internet. You know, like maybe it'll use virtual reality augmented reality where you can see the digital world that you're in around you. And I always mention the movie ready player one or the book too. I think that's people's idealized version of the metaverse. In some ways, yes. Very bleak in different ways. I think people would see the end the end vision. Of that metaverse is being the ideal, not what it is, the majority of the book and movie. But with that, crypto advocates have kind of stepped in this space by arguing that that world should run on blockchain that the currencies, the assets that you use in the game should be based on blockchain because it allows gamers to actually hold and own these things that they're using in these virtual worlds. And a big person who has invested in those kinds of games in the metaverse and who stands to benefit potentially from the decline of FTX and sound back when freed is yet Sue and animoca. Tell our listeners just a little bit about the animoca empire. I'm a huge, you know, it's based in Asia. Yahtzee is just been an incredible force within the industry in terms of helping to develop blockchain games, invest in blockchain games. Is an investor and axie infinity or sky mavis, the developer vaccine infinity, and it also owns the sandbox, which is the super popular. Well, they want it to be easy. I remember you writing that we had like 500 daily active users. Yeah, well, there was this report that they had that. And I spoke to hatsu about it and wrote an article and he explained that there are other ways to measure engagement in the sandbox versus blockchain transactions and buying stuff in the marketplace. And he even said something like, oh, in virtual worlds, you'll be able to have metrics like gross domestic product and that'll show what engagement looks like and your jobs created even. So it's been very interesting to kind of see how people form their conceptions of what success means in blockchain gaming. I think what ani MoCA has done, what yatsu has done is really help lift up some of the biggest names in

"You look at this exciting new was an exciting new game called Diablo immortal that is mobile Diablo game from Activision Blizzard and you can spend as much as like a $100,000 on in game purchases to level up your character. These companies are doing like loot boxes that have a random chance that are essentially gambling marketed to children. A lot of this backlash to NFTs is not really backlash to NFTs so much as it is backlash to game company business practices that have been exploiting and sucking money out of their customers for years while delivering inferior products. And I think that GameStop has some challenges on that front because they're the ones that they have partnerships with these big companies NFT marketplace is going to be oriented towards what the big companies are doing, whereas NFT gaming that is built from the ground up that is exploring new applications for this technology that's not just sucking money out of people's pockets. There's more real potential there. But game companies have shot themselves in the foot on this. Jen, what do you think? Yeah, no, I was just going to add in a point. I was speaking to Michael Ruben Ellie from wex studios recently. He's their chief gaming officer. He came from the traditional gaming world. He now works in this blockchain web three gaming world, and he pointed to this trend that we've seen over gaming's lifetime that I think is not really discussed a lot when we talk about gaming and web three. I don't know all of the milestones when it comes to gaming, but there have been these really transitory periods. You know, when we went from just like playing games on devices in your home to playing games online and having games that you can collaborate and play with your Friends. And having streaming games. And so we've seen this reluctance from gamers before. And I think it's important to look at those trends and how we've come out of those trends. And so because of that, I'm optimistic that eventually we will get there. But will, I see you nodding away. Yeah, I like that discussion. I also want to bring up another interesting point with GameStop that they've been basically rebuilding their entire business for quite a while now. Everyone knows the whole GME saga with Reddit from January. It was a 2021 that was a huge storyline, very interesting. It's kind of died off in the midst of that. They've been rebuilding from the C suite all the way down last week. They fired their CFO, restructured the company, did layoffs, and part of this seems to be them brief focusing on web three opportunities, whatever that means is still seems sort of out there in the ether. We don't quite understand this NFT project is definitely one of those things. Just to tap the brakes on a little bit though, look at what coinbase did, right? They tried to launch an NFT platform. It took well over a year to build that. And then they launched it into a bear market. And I haven't seen any headlines about it, which is sort of a negative, right? We had that one headline we talked about coinbase a few weeks ago with their beta program, and it's somewhat unfair to judge a beta program, but even the beta program was disappointing, right? Like not much volume, not many people using it. I don't know much about the stats of their current project. But again, we're not talking about on the show like we would like an open sea or a rare market or something like that. And so for GameStop to jump into it with their own NFT marketplace, have to ask the same questions, right? It took you forever to build this. You'll launch it into a bear market. And that was the whole pivot for your company and a reason for laying off some employees. It's just really difficult to look at these things and say, you guys are making great calls here. Winning a throw up to you so you get your take on this story. So there's a difference between coinbase and GameStop. GameStop is completely trying to revamp and save their brand and transition into something that will be the future. I really, really think that NFTs web three play to earn all of that entire ecosystem is going to absolutely explode. I'm seeing it on the back end. I'm seeing it with consulting jobs and getting them seeing it with my clients. But people have to understand we're still in beta with a lot of the stuff it's going to take time. But then when you have a project like coinbase, they should be, they should, I'm not understanding why they don't have a good read on the market. I have no idea why they would decide to launch an NFT marketplace after that run is over with or somewhat coming to a stop. So for me, as far as coinbase goes, it wasn't really a smart thing to launch. It's not like they're rebranding. It's not like they're trying to revamp and save their entire business. They're just trying to hedge with what's coming next. I think they could have done a better job when they launched it and been a little bit more strategic in that aspect. And one thing that I will say is some of the people that are in clients I am consulting on on the back end. That come from traditional markets that come from traditional marketing, et cetera they have actually put on hold launching their NFT platforms or projects or collaborations that they're doing. And I think it's a very, very smart move to do that. I'll actually kind of moderately push back against that Wendy because when you think about open sea open sea also launched in a bear market or at least on the coast. You were like the first of their kind though. True. Yeah, and that is the question. How many NFT marketplaces do you need? But I'm not sure that waiting until the next bull run starts is actually going to help that much because you want the adoption happening amongst, frankly, the people who are paying attention when the hype is not that high. So maybe I mean, I think there are multiple sides to this, but I definitely agree that GameStop does seem to be pursuing this with a kind of focus that coinbase doesn't have on much. Obviously has to be something for the mass market. And so I think we might get just some interesting innovations in terms of how that is presented and executed security and things like that. Obviously, it opens had some problems. So they certainly have a window. It's a narrow window, but you know, it's not without some potential promise. All right, we're going to leave it there. "The athletic side, you hopefully are able to identify athletes that produce wins. That is the most important is winning, right? But you hope you get lucky every now and again. And you're like, hey, this signing that we just did makes a lot of sense. There are aligned with our values and our brand and our identity. And I'd say, for example, bjerk is a great example of that. You know, Björk sin was on TSM for and for folks that don't know and one of the biggest names in all of League of Legends, maybe behind faker and maybe one or two others, right? Like he's up there in the world. And he'd been on TSM for like 7 or 8 years or something like that. And when he signed with team liquid and he started to get to know the company and I was having conversation with him. He's like, I feel more at home at team liquid than I ever did at TSM. And I think fans kind of get that too, just because of how he carries himself with humility and integrity and he is very selective with his words. An architect with how he plans his practice and you get that from him and those vibes kind of carry on to team liquid and I think folks will start to understand that over time as he's with the organization. We've got him under a three year contract. On the content creator side, this is, this has been something that we've really focused on. So just in the last two, maybe three months, we've signed, I believe, at least maybe 14, both athletically and content creator. Women to the organization, which has been fantastic. And that really doubles down on our value of inclusivity and diversity and just doing more. So that's been really good. And part of it too is their content, what type of content is it? Is it more looking for clicks or is it educational or is it entertainment or the style needs to match team liquid and for us more of that educational that mastery component to what they're doing? Like helping level up people that watch their content would much be more aligned with the team liquid brand and content creators that we'd want to partner with. Steve, does that ethos extend to the kinds of brands and sponsors and companies that give you guys money to put their logo or and the example I always think of is and correct me if I'm wrong, but phase has their content house, right? And again, I call this one extreme. And then you guys sort of I always felt more at the opposite end because you had the alienware training facility. It felt more like going to the gym rather than going to party. And I'm curious, how much does this ethos extend to the sponsors and the brands that you work with? It's going to be interesting. Very much so is the short answer, but we were in conversation with a partner. I'm just trying to think of a lot to say who, but with a partner that we have and we were talking about renewals and during those renewal conversations, we kind of said, look, we want to establish a partnership for a significant amount of time. Because we don't want to advertise a different brand to our audience. We feel like that chase for dollars and it's an authentic, you know? Fans see through that stuff. And so it was important for us. And so I said, you know what, why don't we do this? Why don't we have your brand team and our brand team, get together and chat. And talk about the alignment of these values and that was the first part of figuring out whether we're going to renew our partnership or not. And I think that approach is not something that most teams probably think about. They're probably thinking about what deliverables and what content and what are the views going to be and what's the engagement and how many products and widgets are going to sell and advertise and all that stuff. And we just don't think that way. Our partnership strategy is much more about Mark association. You know, like you walk into a room and you're next to alienware, an alienware is next to team liquid that says something. You know, whether we are in a video or a Netflix series or it's alienware training facility, or if it's a YouTube video or TikTok or whatever it might be, we're together. And that endorsement of Marx, so to speak, is the brand value. And we care much more about that and what it means than widgets. And of course, we do all the reporting and we're very polished on that side of the business. I don't mean to understate it. It's expensive. I think we spend like half a $1 million just in reporting software. But the vibe of the relationship is very much a partnership. And that's the way we approach it. And I think that's why we actually have a 100% renewal rate with every one of our partners for the last 8 years. Wow. Wow. So I think that just, I guess from the top, that's how we manage our partnerships. We treat them like we would, Friends. Good friends. It's worked out. I mean, Steve, how much of your, I feel a lot of the owners, the CEOs of gaming companies that we bring on the show. A lot of times they're very young and this gaming business is maybe the first company they've started or the first company that they've really serious company that they've worked for. And so you see a lot of gamers building gaming companies, you were obviously a gamer, but started in a very different career. Radically different with financial planning, how much of that have you brought to the eSports world to your business or are they such different universes that none of I'm just curious how much of that has sort of seeped into team liquid? Yeah. I would say a good portion. You know, I'd say, from a young age, my entrepreneurial spirit started selling burn CDs with MP3s that I legally downloaded on the Internet to my Friends and class to put their favorite music on one disk. I did that too. All kinds of stuff. I just love that. But that probably mixed with when I was when I was doing a lot of the financial planning work, you know, you learn about management and people and yes, HR law and payroll and all these kind of aspects of business when you're running a business. It all leads up to you. So I kind of I was able to execute it on a much smaller scale with a much smaller team, but. I think I learned people are everything and talent is everything.

"You wanted this device. I mean, look, people buy iPad Pro 12.9 that are priced out to $2000. I don't know why. I mean, that's not me, but there are people that buy that. But I think that that's 12.9, like it's small. I can fit that in a bag. It's practically pocketable. The difference is there's obviously apple has a much stronger ecosystem of software support for the iPad than Android does. And that's just a hard reality. And maybe you can thread that needle where all the apps that you do care about or you can live entirely within Samsung's apps and you don't run into that problem. But it really does not take long to find an issue with trying to run an app on an Android tablet that does not work well on it. So there are people out there that do that on the iPad and maybe Samsung's thinking they will do this for the tab S 8 ultra. But what I really think is Samsung is doing its thing where it is throwing ideas out into the market and seeing what happens. And they are like, we've got this 14.6 inch oled screen. It's really cool. It's a 120 hertz. We want to put it in a product. Let's just slap it onto a 5 millimeter thick tablet and see what happens. It will charge a lot of money, not a lot of people are going to buy it, but we'll learn how they use it. And we'll tweak it over the next generation and generation. But they could have just made a cool laptop. They do make laptops. It's a Samsung we're talking about. They make everything. Yeah, but a 14.6 oled display in a laptop. All right. Look, if you are the product manager in charge of the galaxy tablet line, you are like, screw them laptops. We're making a tablet. I got this screen. We're using it. Maybe it's aspirational. It's like you sell the smaller tablets by being like, we have this big one. It's like the bottle of wine. I mean, that's certainly a part of it. You're like, oh man, that's too much. I'll go a couple steps down. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that might be part of it, but I also think that Samsung is experimenting in public. They did it with the galaxy fold. It took three, two, two and a half, three generations, to really become a product that was like we can start to say, oh wow, we're really seeing the usability of this. The first one, as everyone knows, went really bad really south really quickly. If you look at the history of the galaxy note, the first galaxy note was not that great. It was kind of big and chunky and limited and it was made fun of at the time for having a big screen. Obviously, Samsung understood that big screens were kind of the future. But if you look at every single galaxy note after that, it was optimized to become smaller and easier to use and have an even bigger display. And so on and so forth. So this is the way Samsung works. I'm not surprised by it. This is the first iteration around this. I think in a couple of years, they're going to do it again and maybe they'll have improved the software somewhat. Maybe Google keeps floating this idea that it cares about Android tablet software again. And so maybe in a couple of years, that will have materialized into something more substantial. Invested a $1000 minimum in this tablet. And if you wait three to four years, you'll really, that's what it really kicks off. Cardinal rule, do not buy something today, hoping you're getting something out of it tomorrow. Like buy it for what it is today. And I don't think you should buy this one yet. I think the more cardinal rule is never buy an Android tablet expecting Google to go and invest in Android. I mean, that's why Samsung is in its position now. Samsung built decks specifically because Google was not investing in Android tablets. And so it had to build it on their own. And as a result, it's kind of like this weird side project that gets not much attention every year and really the development on that has been really slow. But that is a very clear obvious response to Google doesn't care about Android tablets, but we don't really have any other mobile operating systems around nobody wants to ties in tablets. So what are we going to do with it? Somebody wants to ties in tablet. There's one one TV smart TV user that just loves ties in. They actually can explain the difference between it and Android. Yeah, maybe. Maybe. Anyways, to go back to it. I think that the tab S 8 and the tab S 8 plus are do have their place and I think they're too expensive. I would love for Samsung to do something that's more competitive on the iPad air front, really kind of the meat of the market of people who are buying tablets. But if they take what they did here and move it down market some, I think that they could have a potential or a good compelling story there. I just think the ultra needs more time. We'll check in in a couple of years. A little more time. And there was one more big display this week, which was a cam did a review of the alienware, alienware's new cutie oled display. You want to take a stab at naming that product name on the microphone? I'm not even going to try to do it for memory. The very catchy alienware AW 30 four 23 DW. Rolls right off the tongue. Dell, I will never understand why they just refused to give cool names to things. Like, they give cool names. It's called alienware. And they're like, no, that's as far as we hit alienware. That's as cool as you get. Everything else after that has to be completely forgettable. I don't know how nobody's going to go in and say I want the AW 34 23 DW when they want to buy this thing, right? Nobody. Well, what they'll say is I want that QD oled screen. So this is the first QD oled on the market. I mean, we've seen a bunch of announced and bunch were announced at CES. This is technically the first one that's arrived, even though if you try to buy it today, the cam was telling me that you will get it at the end of June. So they are like massively back ordered a little supply chains, but it shows there's probably high demand for it as well. But it's really interesting because QD oled is this new oled technology that is supposed to solve a lot of the traditional complaints of oled. It's brighter. It's got better color reproduction. It's got more things to help mitigate or extend its longevity and lifespan and things like that. And it's very interesting to see it deployed in a gaming display versus a TV. And so if you are looking for the best gaming monitor at the moment and are willing to wait two months to get it, hard to recommend anything else. Yeah, like I'm very excited about this thing, honestly. I think this is kind of one of the cooler things we've seen in monitor technology in the last few years. So studio display webcam didn't do it for you? Yeah. I really wanted the webcam. That's not how hard thing to do. Everybody should be like every monitor maker should be putting a webcam in. This is like the easiest, lowest stakes win you can have. Yeah. To be fair, Dell did not. So the alienware alphabet soup does not come with a webcam. What I think is that the real difference and what is makes this alienware monitor kind of exciting and the studio display kind of disappointing in many ways is that Apple did not innovate.

"Now. Google stadia and the atomic cloud gaming service as part of a new Samsung gaming hub, a user interface which Samsung's intending to expand to additional services as well. The Samsung gaming hub isn't just for cloud gaming either. Intriguingly, the company says that your HDMI connected video game consoles will be part of it as well. Complete with pass through controller inputs. That means you might be able to play cloud games and console games with the same controller instead of having to maintain separate controllers or pair back and forth, with both PlayStation and Xbox controllers supported at launch. It's also promising AI gaming technology that will create curated game recommendations on your TV's home screen, which, okay, sure. It's interesting to see TV manufacturers embrace cloud gaming again after a bit of a lapse, while LG and Samsung both competed for the rights to stream games from gay Kai on on live back in 2012 and some Samsung TVs offered Sony's PlayStation now between 2015 and 2017. It's only this winter that LG and Samsung are back in the game with Nvidia and Google services. We can try and get players from those teams can help players built. Their brands can make the broadcast more interesting. Bring some seimas more analysis and different perspectives especially from like specific lanes from specific matchups. These players can bring and I know we've had some some success for this. Even with like caja. He you know. He came on as a guest meals e and now he's one of their best casters than i think. It would just be a great idea to do the season. Why do you think this is a good idea. 'cause for me. You know we throw at half these players every year anyway. So there's a fifty fifty chance that whoever we invite under the broadcast is going to be competing. Lcs why are we spending time building That that brand well. About how alienware which is the dell computers subsidiary that focuses on building. You know gaming. Pc's recently acknowledged that the company was going to have to void orders from certain regions for a selection of gaming rigs and that these regions included six states. Those states are by the way california. Colorado hawaii oregon vermont and washington state. Now the reason that alienware was going to have to cancel those orders. Is that these particular models of these particular gaming. Computers exceed the energy consumption rates. That are allowed by those states regulatory bodies so in other words these states have limits on how much electricity a computer system is allowed to consume per hour and these particular computers exceed that. So if you prefer to look at it a different way. These computers are too powerful or really too power hungry and are thus illegal in six states. Now that's being a bit hyperbolic but it's also a way to spend this. That could make those computers seem really cool right like alienware said it's a computer so fast it's illegal in six states..

Intel move away from a nomenclature that is at best confusing and at worst misleading and it might give the company the chance to show off what it's hardware can do without someone saying. Yeah but that number over there is better than you'll number and it comes down to performance rather than naming conventions in other words and on that front intel's chips have been holding up. Pretty well actually honestly. I'm just curious to see if the strategy is going to pay off for intel. The processor industry as a whole has had a lot of shakeups recently in large part because the pandemic has really disrupted business and caused massive delays for long-term plant. so we'll just have to see how this develops and finally speaking of electricity dell and its subsidiary alienware have a shocking problem and that's the fact that several of the new alienware products those are like high performance gaming rigs that they exceed the power consumption regulations for states like california colorado hawaii oregon vermont and washington which means people in those states cannot actually order those particular models and have them shipped to them. The company's website makes this clear for those specific models. That if you order one and do you happen to have a shipping address. That's in whether states. That order will not go through so while the computers might go fast while they're sitting still they ain't gonna be making their way to those states at least not directly because the power consumption levels are just too high on the one hand. This feels like it's just incredible. Excess to me right like you have a computer. That is so juiced up for a gaming that it's pulling way too much electricity like more than some of your other appliances in your home but on the other hand. i think this could be a gold mine for advertising. Imagine it alienware the computer so fast it's illegal in six states. I mean sure. That's not entirely accurate. But i think it could move units.
