Drew Barrymore was originally supposed to play Sydney, the lead character, and then she said, no. How about if I just play that girl at the beginning, which kind of was a big thing, because you see Drew Barrymore, and it was a big shock when she died in the first scene. Right. You know? If you can't kill off your heroine right away. Yeah, like I remember, I remember that first scene really, really scaring me when I saw it the first time in the theater. Yeah, it is, it's a scary gruesome gory part. Yeah, very well played. And then before he went to Nev Campbell he went out to Alicia witt, Brittany Murphy and Reese Witherspoon. And then the mask, the iconic scream mask, apparently was an off the shelf mask. Wow, that made that company's money. Yeah, no Weinstein didn't like it. They were like, I hate that mask. "Emotionally prepare for it because there were days when he was not himself and the actors were not behaving or what have you. So I would just, you know, help him that way. But at the time, these are young actors, we were all around the same age. So this is Jared Leto, Alicia witt, Michael Rosenbaum, Joshua Jackson. And they all came back, you know, their backgrounds were TV or film. And Jared Leto was the biggest actor of the bunch. Even though he hadn't really, you know, he'd done one big TV show in a couple of movies, but he still had that clout. And so Jared came in in this movie, and he has since not really talked about this movie. I don't think he's proud of this movie, but Jared and the lead Alicia witt, there were some scenes that weren't working. And Jamie was getting frustrated and just something wasn't working in the scene, and they couldn't figure it out. And at one point, Jared turned to me frustrated after he left with Jane. He's like, what do you think, my man? And this is something that you never do. You do not talk to actors ever, especially if you're not the director, you do not talk to it. But I saw Jamie's frustration, and I saw the frustration, and when he asked me that question, I just, I asked him a question in return. And I said, well, do you find Alicia attractive? And he just looked at him, he's like, what do you mean? Like, do you find her attractive? And she's like, no, she's not my type. And I said, well, that's the problem. And she just looked and was like, okay, man, thank you. I got it. And then so he went back and he did the scene. And there was chemistry again. He was able to help her in this vulnerable, vulnerable moment. And so I later told Jamie that story of what I did and he thanked me for it, but I don't recommend it to do it. That's a big no no. You just do not do that. But in that moment, I really wanted to help Jamie out and I figured if I get fired for it, I get fired for it. Oh, and it was a huge hit. Urban legend to this day is Phoenix pictures biggest hit. Oh my the much that it's spun so many sequels now and they're actually going to remake it. I was able to get a job on reshoots for that film do Bigelow. My job on that movie was basically getting Rob Schneider his sandwich from a deli. So that was all that I was doing. Like I would go into the deli, get him a sandwich and deliver it to the set. And that's your day. That was my day. And just watching if they needed anything, but that was pretty much it. And so I was only on there for two weeks while they did the reshoot. And but Aaron and I kept in touch and she was very friendly. And so that job ended and then about a week later, Aaron called me and said, hey, you were director's assistant, weren't you? And I said, yes. Well, I'm starting this new movie called timecode and the director Mike figgis is looking for an assistant.

The window. looks up. And it's her boyfriend hanging from the tree that they're parked under and has fingernails or scraping the roof of the car. This scene was also depicted in the movie. Urban legends where joshua jackson from dawson's creek was the guy. Hey from the tree and alicia witt was the girl in the car sell cute especially younger. I forget all those games a little fires everywhere and he was in the affair. Oh a haven't watched that by forget. How many of the horror movies like in scream to a bunch of those yeah and urban legend so yeah so massive crash so the lesson you pay last thing so the legend of crops has been around for awhile since a least the sixties or seventies from what i can tell but in the late eighty s the people of staten island learned that the legend actually had some truth to it when children had actually turned up. Missing were traced back to a man with ties to willowbrook state school which was a school for the mentally disabled. So take a look at the school. Really quick willowbrook state school was as the name would apply supposed to be a school. This was a place where developmentally disabled kids and young adults would live and were meant to be taken care of by a staff of caregivers coping skills and basic life skills. Those things will. The school wasn't actually a school at all. It was an institution and back in the day if people had a child with developmental disabilities or even something as simple as several policy. Kid wasn't perfect. They would take them to an institution and just basically like hand them off and say. Here's my imperfect child take them. I now it's so just fucking blows my mind but so there are a lot of kids here. The building was went up in the forties. It was meant to house. No more than four thousand residents but at one time had as many as sixty two hundred residents. Oh yeah it was run by the state so anytime they needed to. My cousin cuts. They made budget cuts from the school. Choirs and staff was cut which meant typically z. Ratio of caregivers to children was about fifty to one which meant all my possible to keep the residents cleaned to keep them fed to keep them supervised so it was pretty much people. Were just stuff there and dehumanized. Basically they suffered physical sexual and mental and emotional abuse. I read the floors. Were covered in filth and feces. Patients were often ripping off their clothes and had run around nude. They would masturbate in front of everyone. Just it's not somewhere that you could really say was a school ran or even a place where developmentally disabled people could be taken care of. There was no behavior modification. None of the school claim to do. We're actually taking place there in nineteen sixty five. Robert kennedy was a senator at the time he made a surprise visit to the school. He was appalled at what he found. He likened it to zoo and called it. And i quote a snake pit. He demand reform and an improvement. Plan was immediately put into place but it seems like this was more of a political thing that who's running on him. Once he got elected into office his attention was no longer on the school and they quickly fell back into their saying around the limelight. Well in one thousand nine seventy two a young geraldo rivera. Who at the time was investigative. Reporter was invited was invited to the school by a doctor. Because the doctor was like we have to expose this shit so they didn't tell the school administrators. He took the film crew with him and made a documentary about the place. It ended up winning a peabody award. Exposed the abuse neglect. That was taking place at the school and once they were outed you know. Of course the administration said okay. We're going to do better. And they would improve things and they were slide backwards and geraldo kept coming back like on a yearly basis. I think i read to check in on the school and they'd be like oh. Yeah we're going to get better and they wouldn't and then he'd come back. Oh we're going to get better. And then they wouldn't. I would think after like the second time that he had come on and right. It's like either. You're gonna keep your clear shut up because you know he's coming back breaking there was obviously no repercussions for. Yeah but in nineteen seventy four. It was renamed to be the staten island developmental center. Which still. I feel like that name doesn't describe what they were doing there. But in one thousand nine hundred eighty three. Finally the state announced plans to close the center and finally at officially closed when the last of the students quote unquote left the grounds on september. Seventeenth one thousand nine hundred eighty seven. Many patients were supposedly transfer to group homes between the years of eighty three and eighty seven. But i read that. Many people believe that some of the older patients were just left to fend for themselves. I couldn't find anything really back that up. If there's a lot of people that said either they were just left there or they were taken somewhere and they said that they were putting them in a home but they didn't and they found their way back there because that's was the only home that they knew luggage because there were people living on the around. The i mean let's say it was an asylum or there were several tunnels intricate tunnel system beneath the school. And they were there. People living down there as well So many people say no. That's not true. They were all taken to a group home but then there was a detective. Who said that he was. We owe investigating something in the area at the school. And in one of the wards he says he found jars of human organs and hazardous chemicals. Which many believe they were experimenting on the patients and straight out of the holocaust right and he claims that this was covered up by local officials. Day quickly swept it under the rug and kept a very hush hush so do with that what you now. Let's get back to the legend of crops. Eighty so on july ninth nine hundred ninety seven just two months before willowbrook officially close though most of the patients who are gone at twelve year old white girl with down syndrome named jennifer schweiger with missing jennifer gone for what her parents thought was to be short. Walk around the neighborhood but she never returned and tons of people on staten island. Were out looking for her. Like trying to bring jennifer home. It was like the entire community just came together trying to find this. Little girl will one of the key suspects from the get-go was a man named andre rand. He was a man who had worked as an orderly custodian and a physical therapist at the will school for three years. That was out bright. One just there there so the they're also different. They can quarterly versus a custodian who cleaning an orderly is typically transporting patients. Whatever therapist my god. How did what. But he left in. Nineteen sixty nine after pleading guilty to sexual misconduct with a nine year old. Oh my god yeah. Police found him naked in the car. He hadn't done anything to her but they were both naked in his car. He was sentenced to four years but only served sixteen months for this..

None of us has seen this movie before. So we're all going in blinds alonzo. What did he think of. It's all about christmas eve. So there is a tradition of these. You know network. Christmas movies being the like christmas version of blah. So you know we on. This program talked about the twelve dates of christmas. Which is basically the christmas groundhog day. there's been at least their abilities to that. I know of hallmark movies. Y'all viewed at least one of them That the play on the initials cage movie the family man somebody wakes up and their business person and other family or family per now they have a business Eventually i'm sure you'll get to alicia witt classic. I'm not ready for christmas. Which is the christmas liar liar. Like there's this. This is a proud tradition of these movies. That they take a film you've already seen. And then you know throw some tinsel on it. This is the christmas version of the Mostly forgotten gwyneth paltrow vehicle sliding doors Where she misses the subway train or doesn't miss a subway train and those taker on two divergent life path It may be the greatest understatement of all time to say haley. His no gwyneth paltrow. I beg to differ sir and this movie is no sliding doors. It is not completely charmless. But it's kind of going through the motions and it really is a it. It's one of the ones where it feels like a stretch that it's even christmas movie Like you could have. This movie could have been set at any time of the year. Basically and it would have made as much if not more sense because again. It's the corporation decides at the last minute that i have to have a huge christmas eve event to attract investors. Because that's what everyone is doing. Business things It's it's kinda whatever. So all i kept thinking about while watching this movie. And they kept going back and forth was why was wired. There do why. Why is this happening. And then at the end of the movie when she's walking down and thinks she gets to the gallery and she sees herself in and they do this thing with the hand and she tilts her head like an alien or something. I turned a dad. And i just said dan. This is why you don't ask hallmark. And these companies to do more like. Let's just stay in our lane because this type of nonsense we get we get we get. We get to haley ducks and nobody asked for that. We haley looking at herself like she just saw alien walkout of a spaceship. And that's not what anybody wants across the streams. And i i repeat this is still better than a rando. We forgot already hallmark movie. It's not good. But it's not the better. The badness of this is way more memorable. I threw out. I just said you don't even know what memories of christmas is about. And i knew it was about and he guests wrong. he couldn't even remember of. That's not fair. That's not fair. That's i remember the no. No no no no no. That's not fair. it's not fair you yes. One hundred business one hundred percent. That's not fair because we all know the titles are meant to be forgotten. The movies are i remember the move into forgot the titles are meant to be forgot so you to their forty carbon copies than this a thousand times over. How not me is memories of christmas. Christmas feels in the same so retired. Fruits. -ly absa fruit. Absa fruit for this is a trainer. It's a train wreck. By every measurable estimation it is a train wreck but it is one that i would much more happily watch than the same two people doing the same thing over and over and over and over again. It's but make no mistake. It's really really bad guys haley. I'd never seen her in anything. And wouldn't you know it. There's a good reason for that The the male lead in this movie. I don't like we couldn't believe he was the male lead for a solid hour of the movie. We're like baxter. Yeah we thought for sure. Like oh sideburns. Pushover is not. He's not the god. He's not the guy and i just i. He is me during outright work. Have a motor and is built for adults such right. Except i did see a bunch of just you know. Ten year olds riding into the park on by scooter mexico and that bumped me things. Yeah yeah and then. I wrote off regarding drank a beer because i'm older now that's right. Get some ten year old and showed them with your scooter. I drink a hard cider. Gonna come on yeah. It's it's bad. It's a really really bad movie. And you only the only reason it's not forgivable is because of the conceit which had not seen done in one of these movies before so that is the only thing that positive i can say about it but like why like why you love when movies are cheesy.
