New York: Take One Last Look at the (Many) Plastic Bags of New York

"The starting the first of March you will no longer be able to get plastic bags in New York would you go to the store it better have your own or you're in trouble so we put our intrepid reporter Alice Stockton Rossini out on the street to see a little bit about both of those stories let's do the deal the backstory first Allison this is going to shock people because most people don't pay attention to these kinds of changes in that the news that carefully so I am sure ninety percent of people are going to go to a store on March first and say what I don't get a bag where all there's a couple of things going on here I went out and I talked to people over the last week about the bag ban in preparation for upcoming bank story I have to tell you a lot of people are pretty much on board with the bag ban they already got their bags in the car they're already using bags there's been so many bad bands around us in communities throughout New Jersey communities throughout New York state Long Island individual towns have enacted bag bans we've been talking about the bag down for so long it's really I don't know how shocking it really is and I've been walking into stores today talking to people about you know when I see people walking out with plastic bags and asking well what's the deal and the deal is if a lot of stores are going to continue using plastic bags because they have a month and a month before they're actually going to start cracking down on these business says after using the plastic bag so you got a little time these businesses will still be handing out plastic bags well they make the transition the government of allowing them to do that before they crack down on them and while there are still plenty of people who go to the supermarket show up their car going to the check out and go I never got my insurance I know and I have the mailing time get out joke baptized I can't tell you how many times I pay for my groceries and I go I'm just gonna take my card out of the car and all that I get there it's very embarrassing people get and they're like okay I mean if we're going to my receipt of pipes but you know you get caught you get caught like that a couple of times you really do start to kind of remember okay I gotta bring my bags with me everywhere I go so food shopping is one thing because most people they know but they may be trained already that it I could I should probably bring my own backs but it's like CVS or if I go to Macy's or in a little tiny store I I better have a bed with me you can buy a recyclable plastic bags they have lots of them everywhere you can go into a store you know for five cents ten cents or whatever it is you can still buy a bag of recyclable reusable plastic bags that's made out of recyclable materials so you'll always have the option to buy a bag which is annoying and again it's things like that the fact that you have to pay on the fact that a comparison that are going to kind of forced us into this New World order if you well get out of going back three other thing now I found out is using paper bags that roaches and other insects are attracted to the glue and paper I'm not surprised I guess you I read this is well known among black people but people that would be saying so I mean I don't know now are we going to use pesticides when we bring our own bags all because you start stacking them up in the closet and you might have friends visiting you in the middle of the night the light on him well there they are all right let's let's talk about this coronavirus and because I know you're out talking to new Yorkers this week about the corona virus I I personally think it's over hyped I know there's there's a little the unknown quantity quality here it kind of kind of makes it scary there were you know we don't know where it came from we're not quite sure how to put prevented or how to treat it so that it is a little scary but I I think the hype is just over the top well that's what we do here man I mean is that is that the media is that the government you know the government nobody wants to be caught with their pants down so to speak back to bed like we don't make a big enough deal out of it and then people turn around don't you didn't make a big enough deal out of it with the media is that all the government officials DO qual model but I I have to give Cuomo credit for pointing out that there was like almost two hundred thousand flu cases I think in New York state or something summary yeah a lot of people more people are going to get just the everyday flu they're gonna get the corona virus and I know when you guys send me out in the morning you know you're looking you're looking for the person that I can get a rise out of I if there are times there are certain stories that people are just like yeah right whatever you know now I have no I don't have a mask no I'm not buying a mass no I haven't seen a ridiculous number of people wearing masks they need that's what I was getting on the street this week everybody is aware of the corona virus but I mean until it's really on top of that I just don't know how scared people really are however when I go into drug stores all over the city and you can't get you cannot hi Amanda anywhere so I suspect there's some stockpiling going on I know all the hospitals have mass right now all of the first responders EMS well we got the sanitizer start while they got the map stockpile people are buying them it's just that either people don't want to admit it or there's just a lot of people that are like you know why we'll wait and see what happens with this bank I think that's probably the best approach and do the common sense thing wash your hands if you're sick stay home and stay out of the way of people who are sick yes I did talk to our students from CCNY this week I interviewed her she's in Florence Italy and she's been there for three months she was in benefits over the weekend can you imagine her parents were freaking out the parents are friends of ours and you know here she is sitting in Florence in this program yeah and my you and all these other colleges are saying come on come on come on you have to come home CCNY is letting students decide if they want to go about making the moment they don't want to come home they don't have to come home like she's sitting in Florence going Jeez do I really want to go to an airport like do you want to go to an airport right now and fly from Italy back to the United States and she decided that was probably scarier than just staying in Florida but she said in Florence everybody in in Venice everybody's got masks on store people are people everybody's got a mask on and it is kind of weird to see all these people she said I went to Florence I couldn't get a map everybody around me is wearing a mask you know who the Torstar because they're the only ones who aren't wearing a mask and you walk around with a scarf around her face so you know you searching and stuff like that and that's when people in New York City are gonna go oh oh okay this thing is real yeah yeah we'll we'll we'll have to wait and see what happens all right appreciate the effort this week Alice thank you very much we'll talk to next week Alice Stockton Rossini here on the job on the Saturday show message and data rates may apply earning your degree from one of the top business schools in the country might sound impossible

"And W. O. ours Alice Stockton Rossini was out checking on where we have come seven years since superstorm sandy hit so I understand Alice is a lot of areas of the tri state that still have not been fully repaired there's people that are still waiting to get back into their home Paul that are yeah we have bones contractors you've done work who don't have still waiting for payment the city plans Joe plan what's the big plan that really have that started yeah there were articles all week about how we're not really prepared for another super storm which is a little bit scary so I'm happy that you're talking about it this morning and you start a show because I feel like the anniversary comes and goes and then we just don't talk about it again why are why are people not back in their homes well in the case of in New York City they have to build it back program and they had all they got all these contractors together all of these work all all of the work on on homes and they rebuilt them make the Polish a rehab them and then when it came down to pay contractors a lot of contractors were getting paid and survey work session work and leads were paid plate again home and then they couldn't get the yellows and their shoddy construction work in Jersey that was going on and get people couldn't get the to get back into their homes people that still couldn't you know we turned the paper work and got behind the eight ball on that their money and they have worked on it that they couldn't pay for it there's like a litany of reasons now granted there's not as many people as there were five years ago or even but people still out there and that the story I did this week was about the contractors and I talk to a contractor it never think Chris each made over three hundred thirty homes along the south shore of Staten Island and in Brooklyn at the first one that they did in twenty sixteen they did it so fast that build it back the city's program that hired them get a commercial and was like look out faster getting people back into their homes and they got paid for about six of the homes that they completed and the city now owes them nineteen million dollars now I I think the guy Brian Laurie that I talk that they did not put any liens stated they completed all the work all of the people that they did homes for not only got into their homes but they still hold some modem yeah and sold the and they're still waiting hang out of the city because the city claims that they're dealing with hi and a big federal grant I think it's like a billion dollars or something and in order for them to you the contractor submit their money you know submit their orders to the city and what happens as we said okay go in and do the three hundred homes that they go into a home and they start doing work and they go G. this call specific and water for three years because they did get help twenty sixteen right well twenty fourteen and G. we can't just re have this because there's no for the entire floor is destroyed I don't have to put it another floor or we have to reset and put in another floors of the call the change order survey to let these change orders to the city after he says okay well we'll have an auditor look at that and then they have a series of auditors look at that gonna go gonna goes on that change order goes down to the bottom of the list that could be a year before they say okay go ahead with the work well look at you know I mean the government just loves paperwork I isn't there a way to streamline this process a because the thing is you're going to get to the point where people are putting claims in and people going to say it is a hurricane watch how long ago was that I mean you know at some point we're gonna forget about this I know I know it you would think you would think there is always on it but I mean we're seven years out and people work is still being submitted and with the contractors are finding is that people work and then they go well we want some more paperwork bass a bit but this is the best paperwork to the federal government and the federal government that we work through this and on and around and around and around and around god knows how long the good news for this particular builder is back you know they finish their homes they got the people back at the people are in the hall of the people that were damaged during hurricane sandy they're not dealing with it but the construction people are but the city is that I don't know it's for streamlining we've done the stories for thirty years Joe whatever the governments involved whenever there's a big amount of money involved with the federal government to government it's just a boondoggle it's just a mess and then they you know it just goes from it look it just goes from bad to worse wouldn't to away eventually according to another you know another contractor than a cocktail when you go to work for the city you expect delays when you go to work for the city you have to cover your expenses and the only good thing is is that because you're dealing with the city well eventually get paid okay that makes you will eventually get paid this it's gonna take a little while all right W. along as Alice Stockton row CD taking a look back at hurricane sandy thanks Alice have a good weekend are you ready to dominate the markets with one of the fastest trading platforms ever take the tasty works treating challenge we'll give you to market days and five brands is much as two hundred fifty Bucks and.

"Well, not many people can say I'm sitting on the top of mount Kilimanjaro, but w Omar's Alice Stockton, Rosie knee is among them, and she is back from her travels to Africa and her assent to the peak. First of all, congratulations. It was awesome. It was the hardest thing I've ever done, man. And you like to do hard things I like to do I need a challenge constantly in my life. I it's it's annoying for those around me. But it's never enough. I have to do something else. Something bigger something better in. This was amazing. I was invited to go on this trip by a friend of mine, and I it took every ounce of emotional and physical strength that I could muster the oldest day and compare it to I could compare to would be the thirty six hours of labor with my son, Jake, and when you're in labor, you don't get a break at least nine hours to the top to the summit. You know, the last day you. Climb four thousand feet from the base camp of to the summit at two o'clock in the morning. And it's, you know, because the winds are really calm, and you know, but you're going up in the altitude is going up, and you're just like trying to muster everything you've got and it's really hard. And you find yourself going. What am I doing? What am I doing? What am I I can't do that? I gotta do this. I gotta do this. And when you get to the top the feeling I mean, your endorphins start, you know, going off. That's the thing. I mean, obviously, it's it's very exciting and exhilarating to get to the top. But once you're there you have to come down. What is that? Like, you know, they asked me to write a little thing a little blurb for our website, and I stopped it right there because it's it was eight hours to get up there. And you start at two AM. You're so excited. You don't get any sleep. You get to the top the air is really thin. You're all excited, it's like Woo-hoo. And then it straight down it is just straight down. And at that point the porter start saying things like do you want us to take your backpack? And it's like, yes. And I linked arms with a porter and we did like a three. Legged walked down the hill. Like, really fast down the hill. A couple of people actually ran because they just wanted to get out of the altitude. But you know, I'm not a young buck. Buck Ness, anywhere. My knees, my knees. I was just like oh my God. Oh my God. Did you post any pictures? I haven't seen pictures from the well, I saw one picture of us at the peak. Right. But in terms of like the vista from looking out at the top. I have a Bryan probably all in the clouds, right? No, not at all. We're was bright sunshine that day was absolutely. Yeah. We got really lucky 'cause I've seen pictures of people up there, and it's like blizzard conditions, right? But it was a bright sunny day. There weren't clouds. There were some clouds laying in the mountains. And you're kind of like on top of the clouds looking down and the clouds are like sitting, right? Very nice. Oh my God. That was beautiful. What what did you learn from the experience, I learned that I had more gas in the tank that I thought for me, it was a really spiritual experience watching the sun rise as you're walking up the mountain looking at the moon and the moon instead of you know, when it's a quarter moon. It's not it's on either side while in that part of the world, it's at the bottom. So let's just like a little slippery. It could slip into. It was the journey. It was the people who were on the journey with me all very bright young people. Some I would say most of them in their twenties or thirties and listening to their experiences and finding what we all have in common and finding out what we're made of and thinking about what I really want to do in my life. What I really want to do with my time. I mean for me when I'm hiking. It's just kind of like self reflection and spiritual as well as the physical challenges of you know, years and years and years of working out and trying to stay flexible and trying to stay strong..

"Good morning. Everyone hit is the Bartlett Saturday show and a big story this week had to do with ways the ways navigation app a lot of people use it. I use it. I find it very very helpful for a number of reasons because it tells you whether or not there's traffic ahead. It tells you whether or not there's a disabled vehicle, and it tells you where the police are we gotta now that we have to know that well w Alice Stockton Rosellini was out on the street getting some reaction because the NYPD wants to shut it down, or at least the police notification part of it. Anyway, they're saying it it impedes their ability to do a job. And I spent I don't know a couple of hours at, you know, the ferry station Staten Island ferry station in Whitehall, and I talked to people with various opinions about it. And I was thinking the one thing I think me personally, I think it's like an overreach for the NYPD to send a cease and desist letter. Two Google saying, you know, we can't do our job. We can't catch drunk drivers. They're going to know where we are. But are they worried? Do you think for their safety like if we put if you just go two ways, and you know, where these cops are is that what this is about. And and they're just not saying it because if you look at the articles, it's just it just sounds like, you know, we can't catch drunk drivers. And people had some interesting comments about that. And people should know where we are. It's about safety and the whole safety debate confuses me because how how is it less safe? If you can see a cop because if you see a cop you slow down. And if you think there's one up there, you're going to die. I use it all the time. And I got to tell you most of the times when they tell you police ahead. I don't see them. Now, they may be very well hidden or they're gone. But I will tell you when I know that there are ways tells me police ahead. I slow down. Oh, yeah. Really so Google saying we're actually making the roads safer by giving you a heads up, and they're saying, no, you know, we can't do our job there. I talked to a lot of people. I only found one guy who agreed with NYPD at the app should be removed. His name's Dan hear what.

Good morning. And I've been out talking to people about bags, and, you know, generally, speaking great idea, but there are a couple of problems here. First of all the proliferation of plastic bags. I'm all for it. If it saves the world's values, the tote bags so you can buy sell for ninety nine cents because once I got the plastic bags and up was having the use them. So like a recycle them in some fashion, and that ends up just being a dog poop bag or about to put recyclables in downstairs.
