"Comfort. He exclaimed to himself in voluntarily yet allowed. It held all the clothes the swinging skirts and coats and summer. Blouses of the dead woman for he knew now somehow or other that she was dead at that moment through the open windows rushed the sound of falling water bringing with it a vivid realization of the desolate. Snow swept heights. He saw her positively saw her lying where she had fallen the frost upon her cheeks. The snow dust ebbing about her hair and eyes her broken limbs pushing against the lumps of ice for a moment. The sense of spiritual lassitude of the emptiness of life vanished before this picture of broken effort of a small human force battling pluckily yet in vain against the impersonal pitiless potencies of inanimate nature and he found himself again. His normal cell then instantly returned again. That terrible sense of cold nothingness emptiness and he found himself standing opposite the big cupboard. Were her clothes were he. Wanted to see those close thing. She had used and worn quite close. He stood almost touching it the next second he had touched it his knuckles struck upon the would why he knocked is hard to say. It wasn't instinctive movement. Probably something in his deepest self dictated ordered it. He knocked at the door and the dull sound on the would into the stillness of that room brought horror why it should have done so. He founded hard to explain to himself as to why he should have felt impelled to knock. The fact remains that when he heard the faint reverberation inside the cupboard it brought with it so vivid realisation of the woman's presence that he stood there shivering upon the floor with a dreadful sense of anticipation he almost expected to hear an answering knocked from within the rustling of the hanging skirts. Perhaps or worse still the the locked doors slowly open towards him and from that moment he declares that in some way or other he must have partially lost control of himself or at least of his better judgment for he became possessed by such over mastering desire to tear. Open that cupboard door and see the close within that. He tried every key in the room in the vein effort. Unlock it and then finely before he realized what he was doing rang the bell but having run the bell for no obvious or intelligent reason at two o'clock in the morning he then stood waiting in the middle of the floor for the servant to come conscious for the first time that something outside his ordinary self. It pushed him towards the act. It was almost like an internal voice that directed him and thus when it lasts steps came down the passage any faced. The cross and sleepy chambermaid amazed at being summoned at such an hour. He found no difficulty in the matter of what he should say for the same power that insisted he should open. The cupboard door also impelled him to utter words over which he had no control. It's not you i ring for. He said with decision and impatience. I want a man wake the porter and send him up to me at once..

"The Syrian ambassador. Dr, Lau tough Heidar didn't WANNA. Ever hear reporters voice again, it seemed that every television set in the United Kingdom was tuned to coverage of the trial a trial that had seemingly revealed his own country's duplicity just six months earlier, a terrorist named Nasar Hindawi had tried to blow up a plane although his plot was thwarted. The attempt made international news especially when he claimed that the Syrian government had put him up to. It Hindawi initially claimed that a Syrian intelligence official told him the suitcase contained drugs that needed to be smuggled and sold in Tel Aviv for a fee of two, hundred, fifty, thousand dollars. He was unaware that actually contained an explosive once the bomb was intercepted. Hindawi fled to the Syrian embassy and their ambassador. Heidar had taken him in and allegedly advised Hindawi to cut and dye his hair in the hopes that would help him escape justice. At least that was what Hindawi claimed. But ever since the would be bombers arrest in April Heidar had insisted on his country's innocence he acknowledged that he had met with Hindawi after the bomb was discovered but is an ambassador. It was his job to help all Syrian citizens even those who committed horrendous crimes. Of course British parliament didn't by his denials they called hi Dr Aligarh according to the Crown Serious guilt was plane. So it only stood to reason that British and Syrian relations should fail and on October twenty fourth the same day the jury delivered their guilty verdict against Hindawi Ambassador Heidar got the news he had one week to pack up his things and leave the embassy and the country for good. But the next April Hindawi suddenly reinitiated contact. He said, he wanted to marry Murphy and raise the child but only if she'd fly to Israel a few days later for the wedding, he also insisted that they take separate flights. If any of that struck Murphy as strange, she didn't speak up since she was five months pregnant she probably didn't WanNa rock the boat and risk alienating Hindawi again. Before the trip Hindawi but Murphy a new suitcase. She had no way of knowing how to secret hidden bottom containing a plastic explosive especially because Hindawi generously helped her pack the bag ensuring, she wouldn't examine it too closely. He also gave her a calculator saying it was a present for a friend in Israel during the drive to the airport. He asked her to take it out of the bag. So he could test some of its features. Murphy couldn't imagine he was actually setting a timer. Unaware. Of the ticking bomb Murphy cleared. Security. "The cause of all disease. Dewey's beliefs resonated with Linda after all she'd been told since childhood that her body was poisoned by parasites given the frequent vomiting she endured she likely associated an empty stomach with feeling clean and pure, and she may have enjoyed what she perceived to be the psychological benefits of fasting. According to a study in the academic journal frontiers in nutrition fasting often results in a sense of achievement pride and self control despite feelings of hunger and irritability. This may have inspired Linda take renewed. Over the course of her life and forge a new path fired up about Dewey's methods Linda decided to follow in his footsteps and opened her own practice in nineteen two. She also sent her children to live with her mother, but it's unclear if Linda. Had, a medical license she had trained for a time as a nurse though when she discovered do his books, she took a hard turn away from traditional medicine in any event working as a fasting specialist did not require a medical degree or a licence. But even if Linda didn't have proper medical training, she had business savvy she heavily advertised her new practice claiming that fasting could cure almost any disease even paralysis. got the attention of Gertrude Young. The forty one year old had suffered a stroke that left one foot and one arm paralyzed for years. She'd been unable to dress herself or do her hair doctors had told her that she'd never regain the use of her limbs but that wasn't good enough for Gertrude. She wanted a cure. So when she heard Linda's claims that fasting could heal paralysis she was all in she went to see. Linda at her Minneapolis Office during their consultation Linda prescribed a forty day fast. She instructed gertrude not to eat anything except a cup of Tomato Broth twice a day and a teaspoon of orange juice in the morning along with the Spartan. Diet Linda gave treatments to her new patient. These were animas and brutal massages that felt more like beatings but it was all the name of good health three weeks into her treatment. However. Gertrude. Began experiencing side effects one morning she woke up to a vomiting fit so violent it crippled her and her staff opened the windows of her bedroom. The fresh air only seemed to make her condition worse worried for her mistress's health a nurse called a licensed physician Dr Yuji Williams who had treated Gertrude in the past the nurse urged him to come see Gertrude immediately when Dr Williams arrived he was shocked gertrude skin was pasty. Yellow and her body sunken. He demanded that she break her fast immediately but gertrude refused convinced the regime was her Miracle Cure. Dr Williams left powerless to help her shortly after his visit on November eighteenth. Nineteen O to Gertrude passed away. She died on the thirty ninth day of her forty day fast weighing only one hundred, five pounds Linda blamed Gertrude death on her chronic paralysis. But Dr Williams suspected it was something else starvation. In, addition to being a physician. Dr. Williams was also the county coroner. So he arranged for a post mortem exam on Gertrude Body and his suspicions were confirmed. Gertrude had indeed starved to death. But why Dr Williams was baffled what could possibly be Linda's motivation for a starving her own patient? The answer was soon clear investigators discovered that large amounts of jewelry and. A number of expensive items were missing from Gertrude Tall Linda had killed gertrude for her wealth. Linda. Denied the accusation claiming that Gertrude had bequeath to jewelry to a nurse who worked at her practice but conveniently, no one was able to track the woman down Dr Williams pursued legal action against Linda. He even alerted the press to her misdeeds but Linda ever the. Savvy businesswoman used the notoriety to her own advantage in an interview with a reporter thirty, four year. Old Linda claim that Gertrude had been well on her way to recovery. But that she'd stopped cooperating with their medical recommendations she added that Gertrude suffered from a fatal condition in addition to her paralysis. So according to Linda no matter what treatments she prescribed there was. No. Way. To save her client's life Linda escaped prosecution there were no laws against the practice of fasting in the state of Minnesota and therefore no legal grounds on which to pursue. "Learn about magic. He's probably your best man, but his poetry and his stories a direct not so black would say, so anyway, so this story the empty house is very simple man. Here's the house through his and June and I forgot what she's called. Actually he visits the house. He he acts Julia. She's Julia Isn't So June July visit them the explores the house then as they're walking around in the gloomy dark with all the creaking floorboards and the Moonlight and the things screwing around they start to see ghosts and stuff happens. And of course, you know, I'm a James. I'm at James let you see the ghosts, but the late the less you see of the ghost the better. So a lot of this story is is the house itself and the house is 0 years. Very Gothic thing isn't it? You know and showing the roots of the ghost story and Gothic literature. This is not a castle but the house the gothic Abode functions in a similar way. The story is is again very simple. If there is an ark it's not our man short house. There are some unfortunate historical things in this guy called short immediately think of a little fat bloke, you know, cuz that's what they say. Oh sure ass some I can imagine, you know, anyway not he hasn't got a character Arc and he appears in various other stories as well as some kind of game center, but he's he's Auntie Julia and Julia is the one who can who she doesn't transform but his view of her transformed sore suppose. He does have an arc in a slight wage is not a long story. He's not going to transform completely in this story. He does the the dust the Shadows the Moonlight the scurrying Beatles in this black thing that screws off. Which may be a cat or as I say a rat because it's more likely to be a rat but there's only one of them and rats are sort of gray, aren't they but it's dark. So I thought maybe it was a rat was a guy called Michael Keller who writes and illustrates the old style tales and he's brought out a lot of additions Illustrated and annotated off of these Masters and he also writes essays about some of the things here. In fact, it kind of duplicate Sana literary. Well a lot of the stuff that I am interested in so I need to give them a shout out to put a link in cuz it's definitely something you should look up the He says that this is a study in fear the stories about Vietnam and about attitudes to fear. So he doesn't expect these and to be brave. He feels he must be brave or it's just not even fails. It's it's implicit in the culture that these the young man men must be brave and it's sort of took a little bit in the woman is very brave as it turns out because what is the secret of overcoming fear? It's not to not be frightened. It's it is to stand through Thursday. So it's not actually Brave not to be frightened of anything. It's just that's a bit Psychopathic. It's about overcoming your fear. So and Julia does this and does it very well off the fact that she's very aged. She probably about fifty a year round never say again. The other thing to say is is one little scene. Also that Michael calamari brings out is that in the Moonlight. He turned our man wage. Shorthouse turns to Jim Short housing turns to I think I worked at the gym short house. Once now that wasn't Jim shall I tell you who he was he was Jim Gatos and I think he was he must be reached from Durham. So I think is probably related to Mark Gatiss the great man. Who does the ghost stories for Christmas who who wasn't really thoughtful crap a guy, you know, he's definitely worth listening to I always enjoy his stuff. So there you go. That's a digression. I said, it wasn't going to digress but what can you do? My name the digressed again about digressing then so but held myself back. Where was I? Yeah, the transformation of the aunt into a younger woman which Jim finds horrific y a y does he find it horrific? I thought maybe she was transformed into the the made the choice made but it doesn't seem to be that there's no follow through with that. So why is it horrific that she's faces turned in apart from her eyes into a young girl again. And what does how does it affect the story? So I don't know why I put that in I guess that was a an upwelling of his subconscious you got who knows why I put that in but I didn't find that frightening but he did so that's sort of end of discussion the things I wanted to shout out. Our old style Tales look them up show notes have got a link. I've done a survey Survey Monkey survey cuz I kind of is still I'm very interested in what people think about the podcast what they want to hear on the podcast and whether I'm doing it, right that's there. There's a link in the show notes go to that and the other thing feed spot. Is service run by a guy called Arnold's Ogawa from Bombay on Mumbai and he has compiled a list of the top hundred wage podcast and we and number six and it's even better than that because all the ones above us are those true Experience Podcast switch ice gone been honest with you, you know, I was walking down the last song as I said blah blah blah, you know, like all the same Source I used to do ghost hunts. I used to lead parties on ghost hunts, you know back in the day and had some strange things happen, but a lot of this stuff with most haunted stuff is just recycled pop. Give me a good piece of literature any day. But anyway, we are number six. So shout out to him, which they're done done great for us, you know, and if you promote something to do with some some good I have also got into a newsletter swap thing. So I will just say off. Who that we're we're we're doing a swap with a book called right like hell and if you check that, I think it's discounted it should be but it's like it's a very well-reviewed. I've got a copy. I bought a bought with my own cash a copy, but I haven't read it yet, but it's got like a stuff that's reminiscent of lagati and stuff like that. So I think I'll like it and looking forward to reading it's on my I've got two piles. I've got a Kindle pile which is virtual. Otherwise, it would go up to the moon and a pile of print books which is not virtual and I kind of have to wage I'm not going to keep that and throw it out because I simply don't have enough space but then course like many of you are by it again later on ago. He had missed that story. That was great to talk about again. Anyway, I'm trying to control my rambling the music at the beginning as you know is by Jonathan Sharps hardwood Institute. I'm a big fan of theirs and the end music is dead. Paste buy a divining which is one of the podcast listeners effective. Also listen to the podcast. So there you go. And that is a drowning. "Swallowed it with a little shiver. He's only an idea now is to get out of the month before her collapse became inevitable, but this could not safely be done by turning tail and running from the enemy in action was no longer possible every minute. He was growing less Master himself off and desperate aggressive measures were imperative without further delay more over the action must be taken towards the enemy not away from it the climax if necessary a month would have to be faced boldly. He can do it now, but in ten minutes, you might not have a force left to act for himself much less for both. Upstairs the sounds of meanwhile becoming louder and closer accompanied by occasional creaking of the board's someone was moving stealthily about stumbling now and then all quickly against the furniture waiting a few moments to allow the tremendous dose of spirits to produce its effect and knowing this would last but a short time under circumstances short house, then quietly got to his feet saying in a determined voice now, I'm Julia will go upstairs and find out what all these noises you must come to wage. We agreed. It picked up his stick and went to the cupboard for the candle a limp form Rose shakily beside him breathing hard and he heard a voice say very faintly something about being able to come the woman's courage amazed him. It was so much greater than his own and as the advanced holding Aloft the dripping candle some subtle Force exhale from this trembling Whiteface Club. Woman at his side. That was the true source of his inspiration. It held something really great that shamed him and gave him the support without which it would have proved far less equal to the occasion the across the dark Landing avoiding with our office is the Deep black space over the banisters, then they began to mount the narrow staircase to meet the sounds which minute-by-minute grew louder and nearer about halfway passed off as Julia stumbled and short house turned to catch her by the arm and just at that moment there came a terrific crash in a service Corridor overhead. It was instantly followed by a shrill Edge Ice Cream. That was a cry of Terror and a cry for help melted into one. Before they can move aside all go down a single stab someone came rushing along the passage overhead blundering horribly racing madly at full speed three-step wage the time down the very staircase where they stood the steps were lightened and certain but close behind them sounded the heavier tread of another person and the staircase home seem to shake short house and His companion just had time to flatten themselves against the wall when the jumble of flying steps as upon them until persons with the slightest possible between them dashed past at full speed. It was a perfect Whirlwind of sound breaking in upon the midnight Silence of the empty building. The two Runners pursuer and pursued it passed clean through them where they stood and already with a thunder boards below. I'd received first one then the other yet. I had seen absolutely nothing not a hand or arm or face or even a shred of flying clothing. That came a second sport then the first one the lighter of the two, obviously the pursued one ran with uncertain footsteps into the little room where short hairs and his Anta just left the hell alone followed. There was a sound of scuffling gasping and smothered screaming and then out onto the landing came to step of a single person thread wait till 8. A dead silence followed to the space of half a minute and then was heard a rushing sound through the air. It was followed by a dull crashing thud in the depths of the house below Palm on the stone floor of the hall. Not to silence reigned after nothing moved. The flame of the candle is steady. It had been steady the whole time and the air had been undisturbed by any movement whatsoever of palsied with Terror aren't Julia without waiting for her companion began fumbling her way downstairs. She was crying gently to herself and went short has put his arm around her and half carried her. She felt that she was trembling like a leaf. You went into the little room and picked up the cloak from the floor and arm-in-arm walking very slowly without speaking a word. I'm looking once behind them. They marched down the three flights into the Hall in the hall Sr. Nothing but the whole way down the stairs, they were conscious at someone followed them step by step. They climbed the last flight of stairs to the top floor of all. Here they found a perfect nest of small servants rooms with broken pieces of furniture. Dirty cane bottom chairs chests of drawers cracked mirrors and decrepit bedsteads. The rooms had low sloping ceilings already hung here and there with cobwebs small windows and badly plastered walls a depressing and dismal region, which they were Cloud toolbox behind. It was on the stroke of midnight when they entered a small room on the third floor close to the top of the stairs and arranged to make themselves comfortable for the remainder of their Adventure package. It was absolutely bear and was said to be the room then used as a Clothes Closet into which the infuriated groom had chased his victim and finally caught her outside across a narrow Landing began the stairs leading up to the floor above and the servants quarters where they had just searched in spite of the chilliness of the night. There was something in the air of this room that cried for a window. But there was more than this. Shorthouse could only describe it by saying that he felt less Master himself here than in any other part of the house. There was something that acted directly on the nerves tiring the resolution off and feeling the will it was conscious of this result before he had been in the Room 5 minutes and it was in the short time. They stayed there that he suffered the wholesale depletion of his vital forces, which was home itself the chief horror of the whole experience. they put the candle on the floor of the cupboard leaving the door a few inches of Jar so that it was no glare to confuse the eyes and no Shadow to shift about on walls and ceiling then wage spread the cloak on the floor and sat down to wait with our backs against the wall short house was within two feet of the door to the landing is positioned commanded a good view of the main staircase leads down into the darkness and also of the beginning of the servants stairs going to the floor above the heavy stick lay beside him within easy reach The moon was now high above the house through the open window. They could see the comforting stars like friendly eyes watching in the sky one by one the clocks of the truck struck midnight and when the sounds died away the Deep Silence Of The Windlass night battle again over everything. Only the boom of the sea far away and lugubrious filled the air with Halo murmurs. Inside the house the silence became awful awful he thought because any minute now it might be broken by sounds pretending Terror the strain of wage told more and more severely on the nerves. They talked in Whispers when they talked at all for their voices allowed sounded queer and unnatural a chilliness not altogether due to the igniter invaded the room made them cold. The influence is against them whatever these might be was slowly robbing them of self-confidence and the power of decisive action their forces were on the Wane and the possibility of real fear took on a new and terrible meaning he began to tremble for the elderly woman by his side his pluck could hardly safer Beyond a certain extent. And the blood singing in his veins it's sometimes seemed so loud that he fancied prevented his hearing properly certain other sounds that were beginning very faintly wage make themselves audible in the depths of the house every time he fastened his attention on the sounds. They instantly ceased they certainly came no nearer home yet. It could not rid himself of the idea that movement was going on somewhere in the lower regions of the house the drawing room floor where the doors had been so strangely closed seemed to near the sounds of further off than that. He thought of the great kitchen with the scurrying black Beatles and of the dismal little scullery, but somehow or other they did not seem to come from there either surely they were not outside the house. Then suddenly the truth flashed into his mind for the space of a minute he felt as if his blunted stopped flowing and turned to Ice Berg sounds were not downstairs at all. They were upstairs upstairs somewhere among those horrid gloomy little servants rooms with a bits of broken Furniture those ceilings and cramped Windows upstairs with a victim had first been Disturbed and stalked to her death and the moment he discovered where the sounds were. He began to hear more clearly. It was a sound of feet moving stealthily among the passage overhead In and Out Among the rooms and passed the furniture. He turned quickly to steal a glance at the motionless figure seated beside him to note whether she had shared his Discovery the faint Candlelight coming through the crack in the cupboard door through her strongly marked Faith Center pivot relief against the white of the wall, but it was something else that made him catch his breath and stare again and extraordinary something had come into her face and seemed to spread over her features like a mask. It's smoothed out the Deep lines and through the skin everywhere a little tighter so that the wrinkles disappeared It brought into the face with the sole exception of the old eyes and the appearance of Youth and almost with childhood. He stared in speechless amazement amazement that was dangerously near to horror. It was his aunt's face indeed, but he was her face of forty years ago the vacant innocent face of a girl. He had heard stories of that strange effect of Terror which could wipe a human countenance clean of other emotions obliterating all previous Expressions, but he had never realized that it could be literally true or could mean anything. So simply horrible was what he now saw for the Dreadful signature of overmastering fear was written plainly in that home baked conceive the girlish face beside him and when feeling his intense gaze she turned to look at him instinctively closed his eyes tightly to shut out the site. Yet when he turned a minute later, his feelings well in hand. He saw to his intense relief another expression. His own was smiling and though the face was deathly white the awful velen did and the normal look was returning. Anything wrong with only good thing called to say at the moment and the answer was eloquent coming from such a woman. I feel cold and a little frightened. She whispered he offered to close the window, but she seized hold of him and begged him not to leave her side even for an instant. It's upstairs. I know she whispered with an old Half-Life but I can't.

They stopped at the street corner and looked up at the name on the side of the house full in the Moonlight and with one Accord without remark turned into the square and crossed over to the side of it that lay in Shadow. The number of the houses 13 whispered a voice at his side. Neither of the made the obvious reference but passed along the broadsheet of Moonlight and began to March up the pavement in silence. It was about halfway up the square the Chart House felt an arm slipped quietly but significantly into his own and news and that their Adventure had begun in Earnest and that his companions already yielding imperceptibly to the influences against them. She needed support. A few minutes later, they stopped before a tall narrow house Rose before them into the night ugly in shape and painted a dingy white shutterless Windows without blind stared down upon them shining here. And there in the Moonlight. But the first wave of nervousness was now upon the long and short has fumbled a long time with the key before he could fit it into the look at all for a moment if truth be told they both hoped it would not open but they were pray to very often unpleasant emotions as they stood on the threshold that they're Ghostly Adventure shorthouse shuffling with the key and hampered by the steady weight on his arm certainly felt the solemnity of the moment song was as if the whole world all experience seemed at that instant concentrated in his own Consciousness was listening to the grating noise of that key. But otherwise this rattling at the key was the only song Audible and the last it turned in the lock and the heavy door swung open and revealed yawning Gulf Of Darkness Beyond. Someone here suggested. I heard him be quiet. He said sternly he was nothing but the noise of the front door. Oh get aligned quick. She added as a nephew fumbling with the box of matches opened it upside down and let them all full with a rattle on to the stone floor the sound however was not repeated and there was no evidence of retreating footsteps took another minute. They had a candle burning using an empty end of a Cigar Case as the holder and when the first flared died down he held the impromptu lamp a loft and surveyed the scene. And it was dreary enough in all conscience for there is nothing more desolate in all the abodes of men than an unfurnished house demolet silent and Forsaken and yet tenanted by rumor with the memories of evil and violent histories. There were standing in a wide hallway on the left was they open door of a spacious dining room and in front the hallway and have a narrowing into a long dark passage that led apparently to the top of the kitchen stairs the broad and carpeted staircase rose and a sweet before them everywhere drapac Shadows except for a single spot about halfway up with a moon light came in through the window and foul in a bright patch on the boards. The shaft of light should a faint Radiance above and below it lending to the objects within its reach and missed the outline that was infinitely more suggestive and ghostly than complete darkness them filtered Moonlight always seems to paint faces on the surrounding Gloom and the short house. Up into the well of darkness and thought of the countless empty rooms and passages in the upper part of the old house. He caught himself longing again for the safety of the Moon that square or the Cozy bright drawing-room. They had left an hour before then realizing that these thoughts were dangerous. He thrust my way again and summoned all his energy for concentration on the present aren't Julia. He said aloud severely we must go now through the house from top to bottom and make a thorough search. The Echoes of his voice died away slowly all over the building and in the intense silence that followed he turned to look at her in the candle light he saw that her face was not ready ghastly pale, but she dropped his arm for a moment and said in a whisper stepping close in front of him. I agree. We must be sure. There's no one hiding that's the first thing she spoke with evident effort and he looked at her with admiration you feel quite sure of yourself. It's not too late. I I think so. She whispered her eyes shifting nervously towards the channels behind quite sure only one thing what's that? You must never leave me alone for an instant. As long as you understand that any sound or appearance must be investigated at once for the hesitate means to admit fear. That is fatal. Agreed she said a little shakily after a moment's hesitation. I'll try in short. I was holding the dripping candle in the stick while these aren't carried the cloak over her head shoulders figures of utter comedy to orbit themselves. They began a systematic search stealthily walking on tiptoe and shading the candle list. It should betray their presence through the office Windows. They went first into the big dining room. There was not a stick of furniture to be seen bare walls ugly mantelpieces an empty great stared at them everything. They felt presented their intrusion watching them as it were with veiled our highest Whispers followed them Shadows flitted noiselessly to right and left off. Something seemed ever at that back watching waiting an opportunity to do them injury. There was the inevitable censored operations which went on when the room was empty had been temporarily suspended until they were well out of the way again, the whole dark interior of the old building seemed to become a malignant presence rose up warning them to desist and mind their own business every moment The Strain on the nerves increased out.

It came to him clearly that the real test at night would be dealing with two-faced instead of one. He would have to carry his aunt's fear as well as his own and as he glanced down at her sphinx-like countenance and realized that it might assume no place an aspect in the rush of real terror. I felt satisfied with only one thing in the whole Adventure that he had confidence in his own will and power to stand against any shock that might come Slowly they walked along the empty streets of the Town a bright Autumn Moon silvered the roofs of casting Deep.

Yes, a little of their company leaves the unalterable conviction that there is something radically a mess with there being that they are evil willy-nilly they seem to communicate in an atmosphere of secret and wicked thoughts which makes those in their immediate neighborhood shrink from them as from a thing has eased. and perhaps with houses the same Principle as operative and it is the aroma of evil Deeds committed under a particular roof long after the actual dose of passed away that makes the gooseflesh come and the hair rise something of the original Passion of the evildoer and of the horror of felt by his victim enters the heart of the innocent Watcher home and he becomes suddenly conscious of tingling nerves creeping skin and a chilling of the blood his terror-stricken without apparent cause There was manifestly nothing in the external appearance of this particular house to Bear out the tales of the horror that was said to rain within it was neither lonely nor unkempt stood crowded into a corner of the square and looked exactly like the houses on either side of it. It had same number of windows. It's neighbors the same balcony overlooking the gardens off the same white steps leading up to the heavy black front door. And in the rear there was the same narrow strip of green with neat box borders running up to the wall that divided it from the back of the adjoining houses. Apparently to the number of Chimney pots on the roof was the same the breadth and angle of the eaves and even the height of the dirty area railings month and yet in this house and the square seen precisely similar to its fifty ugly neighbors was as a matter of fact entirely different horribly different wearing latest marked invisible difference is impossible to say it cannot be ascribed holy to the imagination because persons who would spend some time in the house knowing nothing of the facts that declawed positively that certain rooms were so disagreeable. They would rather die than enter them again and that the atmosphere of the whole house produced in them symptoms of a genuine Terror while a series of innocent tenants who are trying to live in it and being forced to be camp at the shortest possible notice was indeed little less than a scandal in the town. One short has arrived to pay a weekend visit his aunt Julia and her little house on the seafront at the other end of the town. He found her charge to the brim with mystery and excitement. He had only received a telegram that morning and he had come anticipating boredom. But the moment he touched her hand and kissed at apple skin wrinkled cheek. He caught the first wave of electrical condition the impression deepened when he learned that there were to be no other visitors and that he had been telegraphed for with a very special object something with the wind and the something would doubtless bear fruit for this elderly spinster armed with a Mania for psychical research had brains as well as willpower and by hook or by crook. She usually managed to accomplish ends. The Revelation was made soon after T. When she cycled close up to him as they paced slowly along the seafront in the dusk. I've got the keys she announced in the deluge. To get half awesome voice got them till Monday the keys of the bathing machine or he asked innocently looking from the seat of the Town. Nothing brought her so quickly to the whole point is feigning stupidity. Neither. He whispered. I've got the keys of the haunted house in the square and I'm going there tonight shorthouse just conscious of the slightest possible Tremor down his back. He dropped his teasing tone something in her voice and manner thrilled him. She was in Earnest, but you can't go alone. He began that's why he lied for years. He said with decision. He turned to look at her the ugly lined enigmatic. Her face was the live with excitement. That was the glow of genuine enthusiasm rounded like a halo song is Shawn he caught another wave her excitement and the second Tremor more Market than the first accompanied it. Thanks, and Julie said politely thanks. Awfully. I shouldn't dad go quite alone. She went on raising her voice. But with you I should enjoy it immensely. You were afraid of nothing. I know God. Thanks so much. He said again is anything like this happen a great deal has happened. She whispered though. It's been most cleverly hushed up three tenants have come and gone in the last few months. And the house is set to be empty for good. Now in spite of himself short house became interested. His aren't was so very much in Earnest. The house is very old indeed to end off and the story and unpleasant one dates a long way back. It has to do with a murder committed by a journalist a woman who had some affair with a servant in the house one night. You managed to create himself in the cellar and when everyone was asleep, he crept upstairs to the servants quarters chased the girl down to the next Landing before anyone could come to the rescue through her birth. Any over the banisters into the hole below and the stableman the court I believe and hang for murder, but it all happened a century ago and have not been able to get more details of the story.

"Short story, the kits bag by Algernon Blackwood. It is difficult to say exactly at what point fear begins when the causes of that fear or not plainly before the is. Impressions gather on the surface of the mind film by film as Ice Skaters, upon the surface of still water but often so lightly that they claim no definite recognition from the consciousness, then point is reached where the accumulated impressions become a definite emotion and the mind realizes that something happened. "Him behind completely. Literature is a conversation between authors and between books. And there's just some people that keep getting our attention for some reason or another. There's something that they said there that still speaks to us, and I think left craft. Unlike other writers, we have been for gotten of the time period. Really does say things that jive with her modern experience, not only, you know the questions about living in AA. In a world that is Phantom Listen, unforgiving and where your life might have no meaning but also the fact that some of his stories are peppered with issues of race. I think is why we keep looking at him because he is one of the writers that actually has that baked into the story and we can actually Use those blocks to build something new. You can't do that with other writers so easily. Victor. What about you? Why even bother using Lovecraft as a starting point or an inspiration? Why not just, you know, create things without having to refer back to him. I guess I would think of you often Think of literature as a kind of an enormous family. Write the books you read. When you're young. The books that influenced you, the artists that influence you. They get into your DNA. They become a part of your sort of lay of thinking and seen the world. And as a result, they influence who you are, in the same way that they were influenced. I would echo Sylvia that Ah Lovecraft didn't invent the genre of cosmic Harbor. They're artists that were inspiring him like Algernon Blackwood, Arthur Machen, whose work is still red. But he added to that genre, and to my mind, the worst thing would be to say. That kind of writing or that genre. It's on ly for white dudes, because when I was growing up, I said, I love this. I knew lots of writers of color lots of women who also loved this and so the idea that we would have to Give up the whole sort of Geography simply because someone who was a big part of it was a problem. I mean, I feel like then you'd have to talk about realism and Herman Melville. You have to talk about almost every single genre, some of the writers who are foundational We're also awful people. And so the question is, Do we give up everything or do we find a way to revitalize it? Regenerated and perhaps making make something good out of some land That was At times a little bit poisoned. A little bit fallow. Let's say it that way. Sylvia wanted to ask you about this summer's Hugo Awards, which honor science fiction and fantasy writing Where Lovecraft got a retroactive award. What? What did you make of the decision to do that? I think all the retro awards are ridiculous..

I had another dream though. Not a nightmare. It was strange just the same the other day day while sitting here working at my desk Actually it's a table I anyway. I Work I've produced the show and when my computer and everything's here and I sometimes I become fatigued and I decided to lay down. I have a couple of blankets and a pillow and I often take naps right here in the studio instead of walking all the way to the bedroom Zoa later blanket on the floor and I laid down the next thing I remember is I'm lying on my back and I can see myself in my chair typing on the keyboard. We've all had dreams. That seemed very real vivid but this seemed authentic. I laid there for what seemed like a long time just watching myself typing away on the keyboard I woke up and felt very strange like I had been somewhere. Nothing in the room had been disturbed but I felt very strange. Did I have some sort of out of a body experience or did I just dream. I had an out of body experience. You need to do that. I guess so. "So again i think he can probably manipulate that i've seen lots of good ghost story a were still watching a lot in reading a lot of these of these older go stories we don't have any trouble exactly like him are james azeris yeah um blitz step back and take a look at james style in of himself okay sir james road ghost stories that were usually say in a small european town his protagonist was almost always what would be like some kind of gentleman scholar uh and they would discover some antique object in that would kick off the plot to the ghosts showing them he also thought it was really important to build atmosphere and have like an accelerating pace intensity to these stories dread so this leads to his whole pleasing terror idea the characters in his stories were usually ordinary people in the reason why is he wanted us again to be able to relate to who they are especially when they're pulled out of their calm environment by something that's ominous or malevolent right so again being able to put yourself in the shoes of the of the main characters now after emerging games in the early 20th century english ghost stories began to incorporate psychological aspects and to them so when you hear people talk about psychological horror this is when this kind of kicked off and i'm thinking here of some of our favorites like algernon blackwood and william hope hodgson oh yes of wonderful hodgson wrote to the night lance yeah yeah now today the modern ghost taylor what is sometimes referred to just as weird fiction the writer i think that his most associated with european goes stories is probably ramsey campbell rinker um so if you're not familiar with him check out his work it isn't exclusively right ghost stories in fact he started off as a kind of love craft almajd guy but he seems to have like taken up that mantle.
