DeepMind 'solves diseases science mystery' with AI
"A 50 year old science problem has been solved by an artificially intelligent Assisted computer, and it could allow for dramatic changes in the way we fight all disease. For years, scientists have been struggling with mapping the three dimensional shapes of proteins that are responsible for all diseases from cancer to covet these machines of proteins, and they underpin every biological process in every living thing. Each protein has an intricate three d shape that defines what it does and how it works way no of over 200 million proteins and counting. But we only know the exact three d shapes of a fraction of these. So if your vertical and moving around your proteins are working right proteins are the little machines in our body that the power everything they also power disease of diseases are built approaching sous well, so Google's deepmind claims to Have created an artificial intelligence program called Alfa Fold. It's able to map the three d structure of these proteins in a matter of days. This next sound was from Google's Deepmind podcast a few months ago. If we do achieve this, the says incredible medical relevance. The implications are immense. From how diseases progress how you can discover new drugs. It's endless. So there's like millions and millions millions of proteins, and they've only been able to map Maybe, like a dozen of them. So you know, I think you were telling me earlier. There's all shape a little differently. Yeah, If you think of if you think of the protein engine like a string of pearls right in each Pearl is an amino acid and you throw that necklace in a jewelry box, and it created folds on itself and create some kind of tangled shape. That's a protein that's protein, and so they have to figure out what the three D shape of that is. And once they do that it unlocks all kinds of possibilities. They can figure out how to use it, how to exploit it. Out of cure disease essentially so less than 24. Hours ago, the team a deep mine announced they had done this. They've been able to do this. What took years to crack the code on one protein? Now just take days. Amazing with this artificially intelligent program. It's a stunning advance. Has occurred decades before many people in the field thought it would Dennis Dennis Hassabis. He is the CEO and founder of Deep Mind the Google Deepmind, and he says, it's just impossible to predict where this kind of technology is going to take us. But I always think about that when I'm taking a transatlantic flight about how have we Without monkey brains managed to come up with these types of technologies. It's unbelievable 100, ton of metal flying through the sky above the clouds. So reliably. And so if you think about that, then if we now build something by a giant and enhance our own capabilities with this amazing tool, then I feel like almost anything might be possible. So not on Lee Health implications for protein mapping. But protein mapping will also help us develop enzymes to break down pollution in the environment. He could help us clean up our environment or keep it clean host of other problems that could be solved. Much more quickly because we now have the capability to three d map proteins at a much more rapid pace. I just thought he put this in perspective so well that how is it that we're with our monkey brains? We couldn't even have this concept of flying in airplanes. Right? And I thought you put it perfectly to. We talked a little bit about this while ago Um, you know, went when cavemen were running around on this planet they could never have envisioned Manhattan. No, you know, no. It would have been, like blown their mind. As Trump makes baseless fraud allegations, Republicans back his refusal to concede
"In dozens of states from both political parties say there is no evidence that fraud or other violations Played a role in President Trump's defeat. But Republican lawmakers and candidates are following Trump's lead and refusing to concede and that includes Republicans in California. KCR W's Tara Katrina has the run down. Throughout the state Republicans are echoing Trump's refusal and promoting untrue allegations of voting irregularities. They include representatives Tom McClintock of Elk Grove, Douglas, Alfa Oroville and Devin Nunes of two Larry same goes for minority leader of the California state Senate, Shannon Grove. And the top ranking Republican in Congress Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield. Closer to home. Some field candidates are trying to sow doubt too. Carol Webber didn't really have a fighting chance at his run for California's 37th District congressional seat. The Republican was up against popular Democrat incumbent Karen Bass in a very blue part of Los Angeles. At last count, Weber lost by more than 72% points, but even he has refused to concede, citing baseless claims. In this case,

A record number of women will serve in Congress
"Of uncertainty followed Tuesday's vote. One thing definitely stood out, and that is a record number of GOP women who have been voted into congressional seats. Let's get into it. With our own Rebecca Greenfield. She wrote the story. She leads diversity coverage here at Bloomberg. She joins us on the phone, as does Bloomberg BusinessWeek editor Jill Weber. She he's on the Axis line in Brooklyn. So let's set it off. Set it up with you. I mean, there's obviously we're focusing on the outcome. But there again a lot of moving parts to this tons of other storylines and the blue wave. There was so much anticipation of And it remains to be determined if that will end up taking it out. Maybe, but regardless of that there was something of a red fortress. And the most dramatic part to me with this note that you know Rebecca hit in her story about the number of GOP women in Congress actually reaching a record. How significant was that, Rebecca? Because, you know, the other thing that you're saying here is that they had very little GOP official support. Yeah, I would say was, you know many way I don't want to overstate what happened. Republicans. The men will have 32 members heading to converse, at least as of me right now, Alfa enough that they're a record number of women heading to Congress this year, which I think The huge storyline in the mid term, But nobody seems to be backing out now, so there is a record number of women both party like together the parties, But yet the GOP just have much left gender diversity is on the Democrats. D'oh. Andi, so their record breaking number as much smaller, but they didn't break the record that cycle, and I do think that is notable.
Stocks rally on Election Day, with the Dow jumping more than 500 points
"Are higher. Today. We're joined by Jeff Kilberg CEO okay. Km Financial based in Chicago, Jeff Thanks for joining us this afternoon. Two straight days of very strong days. Very strong gains for the markets yesterday and so far today. Eyes. This just clawing back some losses from last week Or is everyone preparing for the roller coaster ride tomorrow tonight into tomorrow? Well, since it is the stock has jumped, taking buses. I really hoping for a clear winner and with all the poles out there, we don't really have the ability to trust the poles like we did after the 2016 component, But right now the markets are looking for clarity. And I think the last couple months leading up to This has been a lack of clarity, so as long as the markets are in place, I think the presidential election of courses are focused only on the bigger picture. The trajectory of the stock market is more contingent upon stimulus, additional fiscal stimulus to help all the small business or is all the restaurant here's to getting it back on their feet and also the vaccine. Hope so I know his presidential election day. I know it's exciting day we're seeing the stock market jumped 2%. But we're more focused on what type of stimulus What $2 trillion would officially come into our economy more playing. When will we get the vaccine? The memories of four years ago when it became obvious that Donald Trump was going to win that Tuesday night, Thie Dow futures were down about 1000 points at one period of time. But then once it sank in, and everyone realized for investors realize that Republican. Perfect It would be very friendly to business. The Dow bounced back and that led to a pretty long winning streak. If AH BlueWave does take over Washington will investors throw caution to the wind about potential corporate tax hikes and just embrace the fact that a big stimulus is on the way? I think, regardless of who wins tonight, tomorrow or whenever this election is actually called. I think the stock market is going to move higher. But you're absolutely right. There will be volatility. We're seeing the vics at 35. That's 2 to 3 times the normal volatilities in the marketplace. So yes, there is going to be some volatility a bit of a roller coaster, and I think whenever we do China prepared clients, we work a lot of fights advisers family officers to help them understand. If we do see that blue wave that you're indicating, Will we see a changing the tax code? I think the answer unequivocally. Yes. So we want to see what that looks like a rebounding portfolio of the bigger picture. This is important historic moment in time. But the stock market's moving higher for other reasons. So if your underinvested you're not invested, look at some of the sectors like the industrials. Some of these benefits Will from the fiscal stimulus ABC of Infrastructure, some of the transportation stocks, all the stocks are going to benefit in the economy. Once we get this in the rear view mirror, but you're actually write rather maybe a couple of days we're going to see what happens in Pennsylvania, but regardless blue wave or President Trump for four more years, I'm optimistic and Bush for Wall Street as we do see A lot of her company's evolving and delivering Alfa to the shareholders. Thanks
'The Walking Dead' Finale
"Is the walking dead back, And I mean, literally, I kept right right before my eyes closed. I saw a lot of tweets about the walking dead right is it wasn't gas bag. So what happened is that we had this season going. There was one more episode to error, which was the finale of season 10 and due to the Corona virus, AMC. Had a bunch of, you know, postproduction things they had to do on that episode, and they couldn't do it. So they put it on hold and randomly. A big brother wasn't on last night. So I was just, you know, looking at the Internets. And I'm like, Oh, what is this? The walking dead is back tonight. So then I checked the date of the article. I'm like, Is this now? I mean, How about Giving us a little heads up. I didn't even know that you didn't know anything about was posted on the guy who plays errand. Okay, Aaron. Sorry, errant Aaron. He posted it on Hiss. He posted a clip of him in a final battle and said, mood going into tonight's season finale. And then Norman Reedus put walking dead finale Finally tonight. So there's this one episode and then they're going to come back with season 11, which is going to be 30 episodes, and it's going to take two years to get through. And then the final season. That's that's the final season, and they're going to set up the stage for the spin off the third spinoff with Darryl and Carol, which I will not be watching. But we got to get through two more years of this. It's like a final season and I'm reading here. Okay? It's going to be two years and I was just I didn't hear anything about like. Hey. Set your timer yet, son Dinos in this finale. God, I mean, it's just another big battle. What else can they do? It looks like Aaron is wearing a big garbage can That's his suit. He's like this armor, but he looks like I think it's all for the grouch. It's supposed to be a shield in front of him, but it looks like he's inside a spiked garbage can Now, dawn from what I read, though I'm not trying. Tio played a contrarian here, but I read a couple reviews that people Actually kind of like the finale. Really? Okay. You know, a few of you see, I wanted to watch it. I don't have I sign into websites with password. Eso. AMC doesn't have Ah, like view. It live right now feature because some networks do like you can watch live TV. On their through their website, But AMC doesn't do that. So I was like, Well, I can't watch you right now, anyway, but Yes, I'll watch it tomorrow. Here. You remember what happened? Do you know I was just thinking that Don Lee. I don't even know I might need a refresher for no. And the last thing I want to do is go back and no watch. The last episode was remember when they were caught in the cave. Was that this season? What was that? Mom the other season. That was this season. That was this season where Ah, yeah. Alfa had all the The horrid in the cave. And and then Yeah, So that was the C O. K. It was this season. It just felt like it went on forever ended. And then we have this subgroup that is off doing something else because Remember? Oh, the big dork was a mechanic. Remember the character's names? Our He's which one? It is very annoying. And he does all the technical stuff he like. Oh, wanted to go meet his long hair and ponytail. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, he went Eugene Eugene wanted to go meet his little girlfriend He met on his ham radio. They kids, it's important enough to risk their lives to go out into the world. And then they meet the girl in the pink real freak job. Girl less lead them through some land mines. That's that whole side plot. Andi, There's another battle going on. But cash. Am I not interested, but I have to finish it. I know we're in it. We're in it. I watched 10 seasons. I have to finish it yet. My talkers. Ifyou're on the twitters, anyone, anybody watch it. Is there anybody alive out there? This's the one show that I do not care if you spoil it for me, because I don't care enough. I just know that I Dawn Stone. What kind of watch? Is that? The final two year finale. Okay. All right. Okay. We're in it. We're just not. Yes, Alexis. We're not doing the spinoff. Yeah, I'm not doing no way. No, no. Because nobody wants to see uncomfortable conversations between Daryl and Carol. You know, I mean, it's just such a weird like, Are they going to get together or something like I hope not. I Oh, no, no, that is, um Max. I do not want to see then his acting is not that great name where all he does is act like he's chewing on a leave, you know, like he's always chewing something while he's talking, Yeah, awaken often visible distance jerky. Yeah, it's so true. And then he's like dog, Kenya. Us doing this back and forth as much as I like. I like her new voices to this's a new character is very Well, it seems like no one knew it was. It was premiered like you guys because no one's tweeting us. No one is so no one watched it.
Electric-Car Makers Take Different Routes Toward Batteries
"Was an article of seeking Alfa, which I often read because they're contrary and sometimes I agree with their position. Sometimes I don't But there WASAN article this week by warn Lunceford and it says Tessler is being over taken Now I pulled the story because it showed up at the exact same time that somebody sent me a Tesla sales report. To tell me how wrong I was about the company on again. Ah, Tesla A is surprising to me. I am happy there. There. The car industry is thinking outside the box simply because Elon, Musk and Tesla or selling electric cars, which the auto industry said you could never, ever do. But I also said that in the future Tesla maybe the iPhone of the electric car industry. There's the benchmark and everybody else sells. Underneath that volume. They still have quality issues. They need to quit buying stuff. They need quit opening factories, and they need to maximize utilization of what they have. Well, In any case, the Here's a highlight of the story. Major automakers air entering the evey market in force. And they're going to leverage their economies of scale. So that's two of his key points when in fact The first part is right. They're entering the E V market and force. The second part is Unless of the car's cell. They may not be leveraging economies of scale and I did the new Nissan Leaf Plus this week. This is wrong with the big 62 kilowatt hour battery pack in it, the supposed to give you 115 miles of range. It's pretty car. Ah! Charged it up. Everything worked fine on it. I was disappointed. It was not getting more miles per kilowatt hour. The battery not much more than where Nissan Waas a decade ago, but I looked at the cost of it. So when the Nissan Leaf first came out, they said it had 100 mile range. But in reality with 68 Miles, it had a 24 hour are 24 kilowatt hour battery pack on it. Well back then. The batteries cost $850 per kilowatt hour. Yeah. So it was like $20,000 worth of batteries. In that first Nissan leaf that a real world driving would go 68 miles and a car that sold for $35,000. Well, Nissan could make money on a car like that. The battery packs have come down in price. GM said they're paying 145 bucks. For the bold battery packs per kilowatt hour. Using that figure. The new Nissan Leaf. Plus was 62 kilowatt hour batteries. They've got $9000 in it. They cut. The battery packs 2.5 times the size that used to be and the cost of it is more or less than 50%. What it wass. Remember that stuff If you get $200 per kilowatt hour, the battery pack you consent electric car for the exact same thing is gas powered car. You have the Nissan Leaf. Plus, I had was $46,000. So the battery packs going down 11 grand The range is going from 68 miles to 215 Miles, which it will pretty well do that, folks. And the cost of the car went up 10 grand, but it does have more features on it, and it isn't over decade later. But Even though this is a better car than the original leaf. I don't know that Nissan has is able to leverage their economies of scale meaning. Do you have a factory where you build 200,000 of them a year that's leveraging your economies of scale. He goes on to say that he's talking about Electric cars worldwide is approaching 3% of all vehicles in the world about two million sales a year. They said not late night 2017 Volkswagen so they would spend $40 billion over five years to become the number one seller of Eve's by 2025. Recent estimates say Volkswagen's investment is going to be closer to 91 billion. See that's a story I want to see at seeking Alfa. If Volkswagen spends $91 billion, creating electric vehicles within five years. Do they ever sell enough of them to recover that investment? There's the rials story.
'Hard, Dirty Job': Cities Struggle To Clear Garbage Glut In Stay-At-Home World
"This is certainly true at my house. American staying home during the pandemic or eating more at home doing more at home ordering more deliveries that arrive in boxes at home and some cities are struggling to keep up with the trash NPR's Scott horsely reports. It's not like garbage collector yogi military's spying on the people whose trashy picks up, but he can't help notice some changes along his residential route in northeastern Ohio. Tell you about. The biggest thing is everybody at home from work and home from school more people means more trash. CEESAY. Fear my job is. Take home. Nationwide residential trash volumes spiked as much as twenty five percent during the spring lockdown since then it's dropped a bit, but it's still well above pre pandemic levels. Garbage collectors that means longer workdays and more trips to the dump. Some sanitation workers have gotten sick or had to quarantine. Baltimore's faced a severe shortage of trash collectors acting public works director Matthew Bark says, it's not easy to find replacements. It is just a hard dirty job. It is quite common for someone to walk off the job within a day or two because they just don't realize. How hard the work is there is less garbage these days at vacant office buildings and Hotels Guard says the commercial trash trucks that typically empty those dumpsters are not easily reassigned to residential neighborhoods. We actually use a specially designed trash truck that can fit in the narrow alleys. The contractors don't have that Baltimore temporarily halted curbside recycling this month. So short handed crews can concentrate on trash pickup. Nashville is also making adjustments. Assistant Public Works Director Sharon. Smith says that city will start collecting trash five days a week. Instead of four it'll be shorter days shorter route and much more manageable. Particularly, if the changes we've seen with people working from home continues on into the future trash collection is overwhelmed garbage piles up in the street drawing rats, flies than lots of complaints from residents, Ohio. Garbage Collector Yogi Miller says, nobody wants that they don't realize how much they need until something happens where their trash doesn't get picked up. That's what people want. They want to put it out in the morning and when. They come home in the afternoon and they wanted to be gone. There may be a silver lining to this garbage Glut David. As more storms form in the Atlantic, forecasters turn to Greek alphabet
"Atlantic hurricane season so busy forecasters have run out of traditional names for the storms. Wilfred formed yesterday and that was the last of the regular names available, so they've started going to Greek, the Greek alphabet. One storm is already called Alfa. A few hours later, Beta was named in the Gulf of Mexico.
New Storm Forms, Named Alpha Because We've Run Out Of Letters
"An active hurricane season this year. So much so that the names of any new storms this season will have a Greek sound. Today's formation of Tropical Storm Wilfred marked the last forecaster designated name for tropical storms this season. So when another storm formed about an hour later, it was named Alfa. Then Beta formed a few hours later in the Gulf of Mexico. This is only the second time that Atlantic storms have been named after Greek letters. Last time was in 2005.

"People or like you know. Thousand but I know like he's a big. Were friends. You know he's a big supporter. He is one of the owners of all things comedy who produced the special so The people are like Oh my God bill burr opened for you and I was like, no. No that's not. Like, are you getting Bill Burr? Came to show support and to lend his name as like a bow for me, and so he was the one who started the night off and then I was honored to be introduced by him and kept that in on the special because it was such a big deal for me to have bill. Doing. Something that was really cool for two was I. I grew up in Winnipeg Canada and started my comedy career there, and then moved to Toronto and then moved to La. So everyone heroes talks about me being a Toronto comedian which, I'm like I think of myself always a winnipeg meeting, which is like my hometown my my guys are there like rooting for me I'm rooting. For them and so and build knows that he asked me before is if you want me to say you're from Winnipeg Canada right now. Yes you get me you understand and so it was like a real full circle because when I did the first album tried to record the first album and special that was in Winnipeg when it all got Kinda like Bhatia got screwed up. Full Circle. To. have. Bill. Burr do one and only bill burr announcing me and saying the words Winnipeg Canada and then my name it was like this is all this is like literally again, all the parts of my career culminating in one night, which was so cool. That is awesome and so cool. I had not really heard Winnipeg that much before. But in the couple of days of doing the research watching the special watching your your youtube show where Alexa from. Begonia. Going from Winnipeg as well. Mike Man I gotta go here. It seems like all these people are so positive. So Nice. So cool. What a they are really cool city in that it's You know small ish there's less than a million people. There's like seven, hundred, fifty, thousand or something, and it's the capital city of the big province of Manitoba. But it's it's in a place where it's sort of on its own. It's in prairies. There's nothing really around it mass to. What's that meadows many meadows But it's very minus forty cold in the winter and like a hundred degrees in the summer. So it's very, it's a very harsh place in a lot of ways. Ed's not a lot of people go there. It's not like a vacation place you would go to but the community in Winnipeg is unbelievably supportive. There's a crazy good art scene in Winnipeg for music for comedy for Visual Arts for dance the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Is like a training center that's known globally the Winnipeg folk. Festival. Is An international festival that like people come from around the world for the Winnipeg Comedy Festival the Jazz Festival there's all this amazing art in in Winnipeg but it's small. So people leave and go other places to kind of get their name and then we're always a crowd winnipeg. We're we're like from Winnipeg I represent the two of four I'm a payer peg. Alon, because it's just like everyone there is rooting for you. It's awesome. It's a great city does even the name to me sounds sophisticated Winnipeg I. Love It. Though, is named after Winnipeg. No I did not know this right like just did this research they there was a bear and the kid who whatever it. Is like you know kid or whatever it was that he wrote the stories for Christopher Robin. Am had gone through Winnipeg on some sort of like trick or something like that, and like the the kid named the bearer after Winnipeg. Haha so weird right. It's such a random. There's so many connections to Winnipeg for so it's like a weird weirdly connected totally unknown like amazing place I disconnect this podcast is brought to you by the Board of Tourism for Winnipeg Right I. Think I should get paid. I'm like ambassador for Winnipeg Their bowmen of Winnipeg you need to come and let me get. To do this I do this all the time for free because I love it, I'll drop I'll drop affiliate link in the show notes. Can Go there we get a cut. That's perfect. But I was also going to ask you. I knew that you said, Winnipeg, that's where you started your comedy career. You seem to be good at everything that you do because you also were. Star and college, and you're an actor I mean, what? How did this all happen where you started find comedy and acting to where you thought Oh this is my thing I wanNA, do this. Yeah. Yeah, the first part of my life was all I was an athlete that's what my life was. So I was a competitive gymnast I played team sports and then I got into soccer and played in university played overseas played in a professional in North America that was my life, and then I was living in South Korea and playing soccer on a men's league and also playing Gaelic football representing Korea in the Asian Games. What was IT GAELIC? Gaelic football. Like. Yeah Irish football. Oh, I know I've never heard of Gaelic football. Canadian goes to Korea, and plays an Irish Games. There has to be a punchline to that that. That is so cool though. I know that's a big. It's like there's this whole other life I to people like what and then yet but I was doing all that and I like didn't I was feeling totally like this is not actually fulfilling me deeply and so I left. My Life essentially and traveled for bit and took a French in France they're forbidden and went back home and like moved back in with my parents into my like our house in Winnipeg into my childhood. Room. And like started from zero again and try to figure out what I wanted to do and became a certified professional life coach and work for a huge bank. Just did all these different things was a wedding planner for a while. And then I had an opportunity to just you know try comedy through an acting class that I decided I wanted to take because I wanted to start getting into acting and then my like I did comedy the first time and enjoyed it, and then sort.
