But before that could happen, the district would need to get control of the property. It sits on. Now the commanders are trying to help make that happen. The commanders have taken it upon themselves to lobby Congress on the idea of turning over the RFK stadium site to the district. A spokesman for senator Joe Manchin who chairs a key committee confirmed the original report in The Washington Post. It's something the city itself wants to see happen. But in an exclusive interview with WTO P news, Virginia's top prosecutor says his investigation into Thomas Jefferson high school's admissions policy is about equality. You're not allowed to treat anybody differently based on the race or ethic origins. Back in 2020, the magnet school went from admitting kids based on test scores, shifting to selecting the top students from feeder schools throughout Northern Virginia, which led to a 20 point decrease in just a single year and Asian student enrollment at Thomas Jefferson high school, which I found astonishing. The fairfax county school board made this change because of a lack of racial diversity at what's considered one of the best high schools in the country. When asked how else the school board could solve this racial diversity issue, Mira simply said, I do believe in equal opportunity. But when you go to forced equal outcomes, inevitably, what happens is you are hurting other groups as well. Here are full conversation on the DMV download podcast, Lou Garrett, WTO news. "Been, since many of us have been in a school facility due to the ongoing pandemic of Covid 19 and systemic racism. Okay, what exactly All right, that was the superintendent in Alexandria schools where kids are back in class. Today, Dr Gregory Hutchins. Talking about the duel pandemic of Covid and systemic racism, Keeping kids out of school. Julie Gundlach is the director of the Independent Forum Center for Progress and Innovation. She is also a Alexandria resident, and she joins us on the program right now, Julie Good morning. Good morning, so great to be on with you. Um, So what was your reaction when you heard the doctor Hutchins Welcoming the kids back to school. Everything was great until all of a sudden that just kind of came out of left field. This guy is such a clown. He is He is deeply despised in the community. He's a Through embarrassment to the community and the city. And he is what I would call one trick pony. He just cannot stop, uh, agitating about race in the city of Alexandria, a city with where Almost every city government official is an African American or a person of color and which Progressive City. We have a wonderful city filled with with, you know, great, great. It's a great community. And yet this guy has, I think really hurt the reputation of Alexandria by constantly Suggesting that it's a deeply racist place. And so he has been pushing for critical race theory. The 16 19 project. Um you know all of that sort of nightmares we see in the nationwide of teachers of activists, teachers pushing this this sort of liberal agenda he has done as well. So parents here have had fled. The schools. I am now I am no longer a public school parent. I've pulled all my kids and again a lot of a lot of parents. Anybody who's able neighbor of mindset, Anybody who's able well able to do so will pull their kids out of school. Julie, This is your good friend, Patrice. We worked together and I w f. Hi, Julie. I just want to pick up on your last comment about school choice. I mean, what are you seeing a nationwide this school year? I think they're going to be a lot of many. Few are fewer students going back to traditional public schools, right? Well, what's sad is so many people in this community don't have that choice. And we have a lot of people in the city of Alexandria, um, who are financially strapped into the really expensive I mean, Cam, you know this used to live up here in Northern Virginia. It is hard to live in northern Virginia and pay. In addition, you know the property taxes, you know, and there's terrible flooding in Alexandria because of that infrastructure and Bad government management. And so people are, you know, ripping out their carpets every other week, and so, on top of that, paying for a private school, it's just not possible for people. And so that's why school choice is so critical. We need to the federal government state governments of money needs that fund education needs to follow families, My Children, my three Children. Um, um, I've talked to you about this. And I know you've looked at educational alternative for you, Your kids I am home schooling. One of my Children who are now going to a private school, But I would love it. If the 13 south. I'm sorry. That's what that was the bad number 18,000 and certain $6000 that went to Alexandria public schools with my two Children. When they were still enrolled would come to me. I could do amazing things I could I could I could hire tutors. I could Mm. You know, expand my home schooling abilities, But instead, um, that money is just lost. It no longer goes to the public floors, but it also doesn't come to me. Um, so if parents were able to get that money for themselves and then choose the appropriate fool, this would be a game changer in the United States and what we see instead, are Basically parents of means or parents who I don't know. Take loans out, um, shifting their kids to private or to home school and what's left of these kids whose parents cannot afford to transfer the map, And so it's really become just a public school system for who simply can't afford a better education. And that should never happened in this country. Yeah, no, you're right. And that's tough. I mean, we do the same thing. We we home school, one of our kids. We do have another kid in public school, but You know, we're really lucky that my wife and I both are able to work from home were able to make it work. And not everybody is in that same situation. Um, So So what is your advice for parents who are sending their kids back to school in Alexander today there may be worried about a toxic dose of wokeness in their curriculum. Well, look, they're going to have to really do a lot of hard work, particularly in Alexandria in Loudon, County and other sort of urban areas in this country where we've seen these viral videos of parents speaking up, Look at the curriculum. I mean, my God, those viral videos in Loudon County of the parents, actually reading passages that were practically pornographic. Given to sixth graders from books given to sixth graders looked at the curriculum. Read the books. You've got to do this. You got it and you got to make your voice heard. You got to go to school board meetings. You've got to run for office. For God's sakes, run for school board. You've got to talk to your teachers, talk to your principal. And look when you do it. You would be amazed at the support you get. There are safety in numbers, and sometimes people stay quiet. Because they're afraid that maybe only once speak up. If you do, you will get. I can't tell you the number of times where I publicly flogged the public school system. And then I get all these private messages of people who are too nervous to do it themselves. But this world, I did it. But you're right. You've got it. You've got to use your voice and we are glad that you're using yours. Julie Gundlach from the indicated women's Forum joining us here.
