"Heyday. Never something you want to do. Not after two hour practice, no thanks. So once we got into the early part of the season, what did we see from the jazz in their first handful of games? You know, they won their first three games and it was went over to Denver Nuggets, row wins over to Minnesota Timberwolves and the New Orleans pelicans. You know, I think a jazz would just, you know, a cute story, you know, just kind of getting hot at the beginning of a season, but then there's this kind of kept winning. That's the thing. Out of the ten wins that they have 7 of those wins are over teams that made the playoffs last year. The jazz has played the most games in the league to share. This is the first time this season that they'll have two consecutive days off. They've had a schedule that's frankly set up for them to fail. And their ten and three against that schedule. So it makes it even that much more impressive. Well, as you said, since then, that cute jazz team has continued to win. So Tony, help us understand what's been going right for Utah so far this season. And let's start with the guy we mentioned a minute ago, Mike Conley. What have you seen from him? Yeah, I think he's gone back to playing to how he played in Memphis. And you know, I've always been, you know, it's funny that I cover him, but you know, personally, I've always been a big fan of him, you know, going back to his Ohio State days. And even going back to his Indianapolis days in high school, you know, he's always been pretty criminally underrated. But this is the first time in his jazz tenure that frankly he's playing the way he's playing now, which is he has the ball in his hands. He's kind of directing offense. He's directing traffic out there and he's been terrific. He's average in her career high insists almost 8 assists tonight. So he's had a wonderful start to this season. And what's the dynamic like between Conley and head coach will hardy who, as we mentioned earlier, is actually younger than Conley. Yeah, it's kind of like what I said in my story, kind of treat some like Tom Brady. He's like, you know, you can go out and you can make your own play calls. He gives them a lot of freedom. And the relationship between the coach and the point guard is kind of everything on a basketball team because, you know, the point guard is by nature the leader in a lot of instances and will tell Mike what he wants from the team and Mike kind of goes and relays it to the guy. So it's been a real partnership between them and it's been fun to watch. Yeah, Mike was sensational tonight. His timing, playing pick and roll. Is really, really amazing. And his teammates benefit greatly from that because the ball is delivered on time. So Mike's doing an amazing job. Leading us on the offensive end with his steadiness in his decision making. For a lot of people, will hardy is basically an unknown as the youngest coach in the league. We've already heard about his commitment to conditioning and his relationship with Conley, but big picture. How would you describe hardy's leadership and communication style? He's a guy that I think he's pushing all the right buttons. He had a pretty fun anecdote about Nikhil Alexander walker, puts him in the Los Angeles Laker game last Friday in I believe that scores like one O two to 100. He hasn't played all day, all game crypto dot com arena is like really jumping the Lakers have made a comeback in Alexander walker goes in he makes a big three point play. The key a lot of candor walker just checked in drives it inside and one. That's a great just coming into the game bucket for Nikhil. Did not play in Dallas. And after the game where hardy goes up to him and says, you know, I've been trying to figure out the most screwed up situations that I can put you into a basketball game and they both just kind of had a nice little laugh there. And it's kind of like moments like those that kind of humanizes him with the guys and he's been a player coach, but you know at the same time he's been a coach that demands accountability as well. He's not afraid to call time out and kind of get into the guys if he doesn't feel like the effort is there. He hasn't been afraid to mix and match with rotations and he hasn't been afraid to sub out all 5 guys at once if he doesn't think that a certain group has it. So he's shown a lot of flexibility on and off the floor and I think that that's really helped the situation. Now one of the guys we haven't talked about yet who has been a big part of this jazz renaissance is lower marketing who's leading this team and scoring at 22.7 points per game. Marketing is a former lottery pick who seems to be just now showing his ceiling as a player. So how have the jazz been able to get the most out of him? Well, I think they've empowered him and they've let him play the entire floor and they've let him play inside and outside and they've run stuff to get him looks at all three levels. I've been watching Lowry play, you know, since college and this is the most confident that I've seen him. And, you know, he's scoring above the three point line. He's scoring a mid range. He's obviously getting to the rim and scoring. And he's playing by far the best of these played in his career. The jazz really wanted him in that tray for Donovan Mitchell. If you gave the jazz truth serum and you said, okay, 13 games into the season, they're going to be three guys who are averaging as much as 22 points and 9 rebounds a game. One is Giannis Antetokounmpo, second one is Anthony Davis, and the third person that they're done is going to be Lowry marketing. If you gave the jazz truth serum, they would say, this probably not going to happen. You know, so I don't think anybody foresaw this. I think the jazz thought that, you know, hey, we're going to get lyra marketing and he's got a chance to be a really good player in our system. I don't think that Lowry marketing all NBA guy was anywhere on Utah Jazz fans, bingo card. And more or anything, his play is kind of lifted the ceiling of this team. Because I thought looking at this team before the season, I said, okay, you know, they got a nice little blend of role players. This team can win 35 games. But lowering marketing has come in and he's been a star. And I don't think anybody foresaw, there's a star player on this roster before the season started and Laurie market has been that for them. Okay, so let's turn to their most recent game and recent win on Wednesday night in Atlanta. Who and what stands out from that game and how would you say that game showcased what this team does well overall? You know, it was kind of like everybody. So many guys stood out, you know, walking across the set out, lowering marking and stood out. Out of control just a bit, Mike ran with him passes out and out of market in three ball up. Three ball good. Well, I know coach McMillan wished he had had that time out earlier. Mike county stood out by the end of the game. He was terrific down the stretch. He had 13 assists. Conley splits the double team. Put it up. And Vanderbilt puts it down. Ruby was that. Mike even likes to still smile on the defensive end. It was a real team win. And it showcased the depth of his team. How good this team is from one to ten. This isn't a fluke for the jazz. Now, I don't think they're going to continue to win in a 61 pace. Don't get me wrong. But this part isn't a fluke. They have uncommon death for an MBA team. They have 8 guys who could come out and at any point, any given game can give you 20 points in a night. In a regular season format, it's hard to really guard that. And that's one of the reasons why the jazz have been so good offensively. Just because they have so many guys and have so much depth. Okay, coming up could all this

"I wasn't the biggest fan of Tommy as a color analyst, but he absolutely nailed that one. So kudos to Chris mannix for throwing out the idea of retiring his number. Kudos to Adam silver and the NBA for making it happen. I do want to just talk through briefly what that means for some of the current number 6s in the NBA. So LeBron is one. LeBron should be able to wear whatever number he wants. If he wants to keep wearing number 6 in solidarity with Bill Russell, please do. Some other people in the NBA Dan, I think should just get off a number 6 now. I'm not sure that they rise to the level of being grandfathered in. So here's some people I'm going to name who wear 6 currently. Chris stapp's porzingis. And then there's a big drop off and we have kept Bayes more Nikhil Alexander walker, Eric Bledsoe, Bruce Brown, Alex Caruso, Jordan Clarkson, montrez harrell, and Deandre Jordan. How do we feel about them continuing to wear number 6? Well, Deandre Jordan played with Bill Russell, right? They shared a front court and 68, 69. So yeah, no, I think it's fair to say like, Alex Caruso, it might be a gesture to see what other numbers might be available. It's tricky in Chicago. I know Caruso, of course, would be unworthy successor to Michael Jordan. Number 23, but maybe we can find another place for Alex Caruso to go. The thing that I would love to hear that was like which of those guys would put up the biggest fight about being like, well it's like, oh, well, we're allowed to. Chris steps, I hear what you're saying, but like, be the bigger man here. You're already a very big man. Be the bigger man and just, you know, find the new legacy to embody. I think there's not necessarily remember really vividly when the Mavs won the title in 2011 and Bill Russell was there like taking a picture with Tyson Chandler and Tyson Shan was saying like you're the reason I wore 6. Yeah. And I don't know if that's necessarily true for anybody now, but like the idea of somebody being able to carry that legacy forward.

"Kind of offensive cipher in the playoffs where you kind of need him to do a couple of things when teams inevitably try to space you out. Yes. And he's just he's owed a lot of money. He's owed a lot of money. He is. So, okay, what do they, what do they do? Are you trading my Conley? What can you get for my Conley? Who is going to make $22.6 million this season? Is Nikhil Alexander walker as a carrot? Is he a carrot to attach to one of these contracts? I don't know. And if they do nothing, just because they're hosting all star weekend. In 2023, I don't know, that would just be such a bummer. I wrote, I wrote the argument for keeping Gobert and Mitchell together after the season. And I think I've talked myself into it a little bit. The city two years ago was still the number one seed. I think they had decent moments in that. I mean, they were, hey, a shot away from being in a game 7 who knows what could have happened. I think they had some positive moments in that series, even though when it looked bad, it looked very bad. I think maybe you bring in a new coach, see if you can change the system, see if you can find something. They do have to bring it to new coach. Yeah, you know? Because it's tempting as it is to say, tear it all down, trade both of them, that's just never really been Utah's MO as a franchise. And do you really want to just be stuck in a tanking wilderness for the next however many years, knowing that you're probably not going to be a big free agent destination, I guess why blow it up before you really have to, unless those guys start asking out, maybe you get an injury or something that goes your way, you're in the Conference Finals, I'm a little tempted for them to actually keep it all together..

"All right, so let's talk about the Anthony Davis deal. Look, I know. We all saw what the pelicans did last night against the Phoenix Suns, picking up a big win. Yes, Devin Booker went down with a hamstring injury, that certainly played a role in the pelicans getting a win, but a lot of people around the NBA looked at that pelican's team and said, you know what? They're not that bad. Maybe they have figured something out here. And that could matter to the Lakers moving forward in terms of the overall cost of doing the Anthony Davis trade in addition to the Lakers own decision making. I think that's something that we need to remember when we're looking at this deal. And by the way, before I get too into the weeds here, I still am of the mindset that the Lakers won the trade simply by virtue of they won a championship. The question is, can the pelicans also win the Anthony Davis trade with some of the things they get from the Lakers? The second the Lakers won the championship, that's it. The Anthony Davis trade was a massive success for LA. Now, moving forward though, the Lakers might have to pay the price for that championship. And that's where the pelicans can really start to benefit from this deal. As of this point, the Lakers have not given up any assets that they had any say over any control over in terms of the overall value of them until this summer. Up until now with the Lakers have given in exchange for Anthony Davis, was Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart. We all knew those values at the time, okay? Those are gone. They also gave up the fourth overall pick in the draft in 2019. That turned into Deandre hunter, ultimately the pelicans traded them pick. Got a couple of players, Nikhil Alexander walker, and then of course Jackson, and he's as well using that. But again, we knew the value of that as well. The fourth overall pick in the 2019 draft. What we didn't know the value of. And what the Lakers would actually have a say in the cost of was the future picks. Now this year, the Lakers will give the pelicans their draft pick. This was the first year that the Lakers had a say in the cost of the Anthony Davis trade. There were some variables here. And the Lakers, unfortunately, due to a number of factors are going to give the pelicans an asset that is much, much better than they had hoped. In fact, they're going to be giving the pelicans a lottery pick this year if everything stays chalk it will be the 8th overall pick in this year's drought. So factor that and add that into the cost of the Anthony Davis trade. Now you've got two lottery picks, the number four pick and a lottery pick this year that are going to the New Orleans pelicans, but once again, the Lakers had a say in this. The Lakers determined their own fate in terms of what they are giving to the pelicans in exchange for Anthony Davis this year because of the decisions.

"I mean, it's not what you want if you're like yeah, this seems like filling out the reserve unit with some high upside guys, which nice, nice to have. Like if you're a believer in Alexander walker, you know, I don't know how the jazz are getting that type of player otherwise. I am not a big Nikhil Alexander walker guy at this point, but you know the Alexander family has produced some talent. Maybe something works out there. I just gotta say, just throw in Joe angles into the wild here. Like he's going to the blazer is clearly a salary flotsam. It seemed like it was going to happen anyway, even if he was healthy, but they just had him on the broadcast, do like an entire quarter's worth of reflection on his career. And we probably should have known then. Jesus, yeah. We'll see how that all works out. Briefly here before we go here, a couple of predictions was, do you think harden comes a 6 or 5 O one? So I think because I think Darrell's just gonna have to realize that it's do or die, it's now or never, his conference is wide open. You know, and Joel embiid is playing at a level we've never seen him play before. This is all time great big man, Hall of Fame stuff. If it costs you and max you or thy ball two guys who are good players who we like, who, again, Internet might be overrated in them as far as they're important in a playoff setting. I think ultimately he's going to have to break your face reality and just be like, all right, I'm going to do what I got to do to get harder into this building. I now have harder than embiid. I'm ready to rock and roll. Let's see what I gotta get to the box. Let's see what I gotta gets Brooklyn. And like, I just love the idea of Brooklyn and Ben Simmons playing the sixers in the playoffs. A freaking sixers home game against the nets. Oh my God, my head wants to explode at just the thought of that happening this season in the playoffs. I also think it's going to happen almost for the opposite reason. I think if you're the nets, you just have zero confidence in heart and being back on your team after this season. By the way, by the way, fuck off. Get out of here, James Harden. The hardening thing is hilarious 'cause again, you're 1 millionth teammates that are not up to snuff for you. And again, you're a guy who's never done a single thing in the playoffs. Nothing. You have no track record of being excellent in the playoffs. And now you're bitching and griping about people not being at your level and not up to your expectations. Get out of here. I still have KD therefore. I'm good, baby. Yeah. If I were the nets, I would say to harden, where else are you going? Like who has cap space over the summer in order to sign you? You know this is inevitability. And I wonder if Daryl, our friend is going to try to push too hard in order to keep a maxi or a thible and this actually just extends out into the off season for that reason. There's going to be a steering contest about those details, which is actually why harden wasn't there straight from the rockets, right? Like Daryl hardline reportedly over including a maxi or additional stuff including in addition to Simmons. And so I wonder if that happens again. I don't know if I'm ready for a full on prediction with this, but I think the deal is going to happen. I think neither maxi ortho are going to be in it. I think it's going to be primarily Ben Simmons and maybe picks based. For hard. Just a gut feeling based on where we are right now. All right, we will wait and see what happens there. We'll have a ton of stuff on the ringer MBA show feed and on the Bill Simmons podcast feed for the deadline. So check those out Thursday and Friday, but that is it for us. We'll be back next week as a trio. Thank you to Devon manzi for filling out production. If you have a birthday party, please invite robina but not wild. We'll see you next time..

"On the rim? Hasn't been a lot yet, but I think the pacers need someone that can regularly do that. And Christopher is not really that guy either. So if I was the pacers, that's what I would look to do, acquire a really good guard who can pressure the basket at a high level and look to improve that way. I'm not saying it'll be this guy, but like someone in the vein of a jaylen sags like someone who fits their timeline that is just like a super downhill creator who defends at a high level on the ball particularly and is just really aggressive is what I would look for. Again, it won't be jail in socks because Orlando's control. But maybe that's also without the trade, say the product thing doesn't work. Somebody else kind of having the draft and J 90 you have like that fourth 5th ish type pick. That's a possibility too. Not a long commute for him to go to Purdue down to Indiana to play for the pacers. I'm not trying to get too far down the line, but that was probably some of the possibilities they thought about. And getting younger and looking at the freshman class and what's just stash and what these guys develop over time, we're not going to win this year, but build around tyrese halbert and built around maybe crystal Arte and the other pieces they already have. Yeah, if I was them, I would pretty aggressively pursue Jade and ivy in this year's draft. I think that's the exact guy that they need to make this work. But we'll see. No, I think that the pacers are off to a very strong start in their rebuild. They have a lot of really smart guys that are really scalable players, which will allow them to hopefully get the star here moving forward. It's almost like a raptors in rebuild, where they got the guys that fit around the star in now the raptors try and find the star and it might be Scotty Barnes. It might be this version of Pascal siakam that's been incredible since he has returned from his year and a half where he wasn't awesome. But by keeping OG and Adobe and I mean, Fred van vleet has turned into something different, but he was a guy that had a really high floor like some of the guys we're talking about like Chris duarte and tyrese Halliburton, right? But by keeping some of the guys that they kept around, Gary Trent junior signing him to his extension. They've set themselves up really well to have the pieces in place that once they get the star developed the star, they're going to be able to make a leap up the east and we're seeing that literally right now with what's going on. So, okay. Let's go to the next deal. The New Orleans pelicans acquire CJ McCollum Larry Nance junior and Tony Snell from the Portland Trail Blazers for Josh hart, Tomas Saturn ski. Nikhil Alexander walker, didi lozada, a 2022 protected first round pick that has some kind of funky protection. It's essentially like protected for this year to where the blazers get it. If it's between 5 and 14, I.

"Is I've seen enough mason plumbing. Took 8 games, but I'm with you. I absolutely like mason can be a 22 minute guy off the bench. Like he can't be the starter on the playoffs. And that's just not. That's not his ministry right now. But yeah, I also want to clarify like me saying hey, the front court does not mean that those guys are not individually good. They're all star count. Yeah, I love miles Turner. It's just, there's just a little bit more synergy that needs to be made with that roster. And that seems like the obvious point to make that adjustment. Yeah, I agree. And Malcolm Brogdon, they can't move him because they signed him to that extension, so he can't be traded for 6 months. I guess Karis levert could be an option, but Keras levert and sabonis like just had a really great game last night and I want to continue to explore how that looks. You definitely don't move crystal Arte, who's young and you have for a lot of cheap years. I think that it's just that miles Turner is the man like the odd man out more than anything, right? You're probably building around sabonis long term. Maybe it is a bonus. Like I can't imagine them moving sabonis personally, but like one of those two seems like the odd man out to me and it just feels like Turner is the one. And I think miles Turner is probably one of the ten best defenders in the NBA. He has a case to be one of the 5 best defenders in the NBA in my opinion. It's not a statement on him. It's just a statement on where this organization is going. And I feel like they just need they need to do something a little bit differently. They do, and I would just say before we go off of indie, getting TJ Warren back at some point would help, and I just have no. Is he what's going on with TJ Warren? Yeah, I have no idea. You know, it seems like there's a foot issue there with TJ and Warren and I don't know and by the way, that was a tremendous transition. Because our next question is about another player of the foot injury. How worried are you about the entirety of the design Williamson? Situation? Because I am extremely worried at the moment. Yes, that's part of the best way I can. Yes, I just don't like the vibes because we got a New Orleans period. Like there's been so much weirdness surrounding Zion, hit people, New Orleans, the relationship they have with current and former players. It's just all very weird. And even the roster itself, it's some I wrote about in my division preview on them. They have a lot of players I like, it's just how do you fit the lineups to make things make sense? Can you feed everyone there? There's just so much going on. And with Zion being removed right now, a lot of guys like Nikhil Alexander walker particularly like he's just over his head in terms of role right now. And that's just got to make a things worse and now like Brandon ingalls also be in and out of New Orleans. I really hate it for him. I hate it for the fans there..

"Now we're going to get into the good stuff. Breakout player, which is like a knockoff of most improved player, but I just hate what the most improved player has become. It's basically like the best second year guy who liked his numbers jump or whatever. I don't know if these guys numbers. Yeah, like I don't know if this guy's numbers are gonna jump. But I think that by the end of the year, we're gonna talk about this guy as being like one of the absolute best young point guards in the NBA in a way that he is not discussed right now. I picked Darius Garland for this. You must believe in that passing. I do believe in the passing. To quite a high level and I believe in the shooting as well at a pretty high level. Can he do it? I think he's Colin Sexton. No, I think that they need to do something with Colin. At some point, but put it this way. Like by the end of the year, I think that they know already based off of some of the reporting that seems to be out there that Darius is their guy, right? But I think that more than anything, it's going to become very clear that the two guys they need to build around. And again, this is, I think this is stuff they know. I think Chris feed or like we're actually reported this, that they feel this way. The two guys they need to build around are Darius Garland and Evan mobley is your point guard center like pivots. I think there is Garland is an absolute stud. I think he's gonna average like 22 in like 8 assists this year. If he gets the opportunity if he gets the opportunity if they move Colin Sexton, if they just frankly like split those guys time more, I think he's gonna have an absolutely monster season numerically. So I was gonna say Michael Porter junior, which is like my pick, like if I'm just trying to guess who might win the award, right? Not who I think should win the award necessarily. Because Michael Porter junior is going to score a lot of points and he's going to play a lot more and have more attention. Nikhil Alexander walker is a guy who should be on the list. OG Anna nobi. Who I thought was going to do it last year and he did. He was good last year. I think he's got a real chance to establish himself. Would it strike you as completely out of left field if OG is the one B this year? Not at all. Okay. He started to show some of that ball handling ability. They started using them a little bit more in pick and roll. Wouldn't totally blow my mind. And by the way, Pascal's gonna miss the first 20 ish, let's say 15 ish games of the season. Yeah. So he's gonna get to really work that well with Fred van vleet early and they're really running, which I think helps him. Just taking from preseason, it seems like they're going to sprint the floor as much as they can..

"Improvement. Upgrade. Really good player. We just talked about how important he wants to Memphis. I think he's going to help them a lot. I don't know who they defend. Yeah, I'm not sure who they defend. There are problems. And Kira Lewis, like I like Hera. Who's defending on the scene? Yeah, I think Trey Murphy's pretty good on defense. I think herb Jones has gone on defense. Naji Marshall. Those guys aren't going to play it on though. Right, that's the thing. You're naming 6, 7, 8 guys. That's not what you want. On the top of the good defenders list. Yeah. Look. And like that's an under play good defense Valentine's can play good defense in a team setting. We saw that in Memphis. There is not a team setting of defense yet. There's no system for him to figure it out and be play a role. It's not going to be pretty. And also it's just the west. There's just got to be some teams that take some lumps and I think in the middle, New Orleans is one of those things for me. So like they have Zion and Brandon Ingram both of whom are like all star ish players. Zion's definitely going to be an all star this year. They balance units who I thought was like a top 6 center last year, something like that. 6, 8. Yeah. Sato ronski, Josh hart, Garrett sample. Lewis, Trey Murphy, Nikhil Alexander walker who I think is like legit really good. Are you play a little bit? Naji Marshall and herb Jones who I also really like and had a first round grade on. Like real time. That's like 8 dudes that are like legit rotation ish players. Fantastic. That's a 37 win team. They're not gonna be awful, like they're not gonna be terrible I'm not sitting here gonna be like, yeah, they're gonna get a top 5 pick, but they're just not in that tears. So here's what worries me is are there diminishing returns on having both Jonas and Zion, given the way that those two are so dominant around the basket and given that both of them score a ton on post-ops. Like you can't post both of them. I would like to Zion ball over the top, just play volleyball over the top over the key until like one of them feels like they're in good position to finish put. I kind of love this idea. We're trying where you just keep throwing it out to the top and reposting on the other side. It's like a three two defense. Just set up like a three two defense on offense and have Zion on one block, notice on the other block and then just like zip it around, throw it down. Zip it around after the kick out back out. Throw it down to go and send the other side. This is what we need. Only 24 seconds on the shot clock folks. Willie green call us. We have some we have some concepts to consider. Yes. Can you imagine how pissed off Brandon Ingram would be being like in the corner as they post Zion and Jonas every other possession? Oh my God. There's some there's some questions over fit as well as just bad vibes. It's real bad. I like Willie green though. I hope he succeeds. Long term. Okay. Yeah, we're both under here. You might have convinced me to take it this..

"I just i look like and again. I think it's probably a good thing that a young player like cairo. Lewis might get squeezed in the rotation because they have so many guys and maybe i'm too optimistic about alexander walker turning into it okay to two way player right away and we're talking about rookies contributing and all this. I just look up and down the rostrum. Like they can take out some. I didn't like our offseason. Let's be clear. I didn't like i'd rather have lonzo than demonte. It didn't didn't really love that. I didn't love that. They traded picks to free up space for kyle. Lowry didn't do it. And traded traded assets. Here and there. But i do look at their team. I'm like i think they're going to be pretty good. I might go over by the teensy margins on forty and a half. And then i get. I get like involuntary vomiting coming up my throat. Because i'm afraid to do it. But i think this should be pretty good despite all the noise and all the transactions that i didn't really love i think they should be pretty good. I think they're swing is maybe bigger than the top five like swing in the nba. I could see them winning. It goes right. I can see them wanting forty six forty games. If everything goes terribly wrong. I could see them in the third. Like at thirty and fifty two again. nikial alexander walker point. He started thirteen games last year. Now a lot of this is skewed little bit by that. Thirty seven point game yet against the clippers earlier in the year where he was just on fire but in his thirteen starts last year he ever nineteen five and three when he had a defined role in the offense he was so much but whether that role was him being the six man. Or hey you we. We need a spot starter. He took off when he was only. If i make a mistake i gotta come out. He shooting percentages tanked everything tank because he wasn't confident when you have confident nikki who has a defined role. He is a much better player. And i think you'll see that this year potentially with him being in the starting lineup on knowing he's the six airflow. I'm getting excited. It'd be nice for my little butterfly. I saw careful. Don't don't tease me. These pelicans tease me every year. And it always goes wrong except for the one year. They made the playoffs and destroyed portland and almost lasers. It always goes wrong. Don't tease me. They should let's put it this way. They should definitely be better than sacramento. I think they should. They should be better than minnesota who. I actually am rather bullish on compared to projections forgetting inching. Forget finches. Chris benches and real deal forget houston and oklahoma city. Who are playing with the rest of the guys. The they're better than new orleans is better than san antonio and so if they're better than all those teams i picked up morally. You're you're in the plan. Then you're thinking chances are someone above me on the western conference. Food chain is taken an injury. Having an injury take longer to recover from then projected having chemistry issues getting off to a slow start in bailing out. Whatever it is someone up. There who appears untouchable now is going to be touchable. And i'm starting to get optimistic about the pelicans. I can't help myself. i don't want to be. I don't talk today this. I'm going to kill alexander walker fan. I'm big on the keel. I am big. I'm a huge nausea marshall. Fan we briefly talked about najji marshall. It was good last year. He he came out like he came out of nowhere at the end and he's another one who can guard two three four for them. Really guard ones and pinches. I see it on your. You're in. I i see it i need i see i need to end the podcast and take a walk without my phone and just refer just like look at the trees and listen to the wind russell on the trees and see what nature tells me. See what see what the crickets in the birds. Tell me because. I my rational brain is now broken and i. I'm afraid i'm afraid. Angel lopez i need. I need to get off this podcast. I need to take a break. You do a fantastic job covering the pelicans. You might be the coach of the pelicans next year. The way things go there. Thank you for coming on. I'm glad everyone is safe in your family extended family after all the storms down there. I look forward to senior in person. And we'll we'll a beverage of.

"The positive teams. Except for when. I commented on them in which i got was. Do you want to take someone down a peg to start here with our underachievers. I don't even think there's expectations for this team. But i think whatever they are they should be lowered. The new orleans. Pelicans i just don't really like the juju around the team. Obviously they you know theoretically right they've upgraded at point guard and center by bringing in a devante graham and yoenis vallon shula respectively You know there are people who like thomas. Tomas is he said. Tomas sata rant ski. But i just you know just a level of panic and desperation that permeated their off season and the talks about them needing to prove it to a third year dude. Who hasn't even sniffed. The ten seed yet is i just don't like what that portends for the overall atmosphere of this team going into the season you know. Maybe i'm wrong. Maybe zion turns into thirty lebron. And he's the type of guy that could beat the detroit pistons right in in the playoffs right but like i don't i don't think so i just don't see it. The brandon ingram and zion. Fit is always been sort of clumsy one still remain. A pretty big brandon ingram fan. I just don't like the setup for him or zion. Quite frankly in new orleans right like we make jokes during the offseason when in the woods. Sweet that announced the valley deal. It said that he provided more spacing than stephen adams. Which is like. I don't know did. That's that's an odd way to to sort of frame that signing when the guys wind up takes about twenty years to get a three off right like this guy's in some three point threat or shooter. I just don't like what they've done right. They cleared up all this cap space because allegedly there were going to be in the cow lowry sweepstakes and all these other guys and it just never happened in. They ended up settling on devante. Graham i just i don't know man. I don't like what this team did in the off season. I don't like all the stuff that you hear coming out of there about disgruntled sort of position of zion williamson. Who supposed to be the franchise. I just don't think is going to be a good year for them. I think it's telling that as you mentioned was so much of it. Depends on what zion turns into on if he can be the lebron if he can be a superstar of that level and zion feels less than bullish about this whole situation new orleans. I think it's probably because the pelicans whether they're good or not. It falls on his shoulders because the rest of the team is kind of a wash. You know they. They've gotten better in terms of shooting. I don't really know that this team is in a position to be any better defensively than they were last season when they were really suspect. Really disappointing you. Add it all up. I'm just not sure there's a lot to a lot to recommend other than taking a leap. My only counter here is that this team can't underachieve. Because i think the expectations are set. So low point that like you can only over achieve because i think the consensus around this team is that they will probably finish outside the playoffs or best case scenario in the plan is just like i don't know it seems like a pretty similar team to last year swapping in devante graham for lonzo ball which seems like a downgrade although like maybe he provides different things that they might need the defense lord and like you said down a similar type. Two stephen adams might be as small upgrade but not enough eight. They improved probably on the fringes. But they're counting on a lot of internal development which they would have anyway right like just saying like oh we have ingram in zion. And that's enough. You're going to have that regardless. You really need to do stuff to bolster around them because you had so much to work with relying on eternal improvement. Why did you get all these bigs around. Jackson hayes. He no like isn't he. Simply one of the guys who going to internally improve and like you got all of this insurance around in that doesn't project any confidence. The weight firm where i sit that this guy's going to be a starting level quality. Nba senator. i. I just man. I'm interested to see because look as as negative as i've been on them. I still think zion when he's right is so electric so special so singular what he brings to the game offensively like. You can't deny that there were times last season where he basically was shack level. Dominant against teams right. So you can't understate. How special guy is when he gets rolling but so much has to go right around him. Men and make this thing competent. I just don't have the confidence that it will be. I think the the best case scenario for them. Is you know these guys like cairo. Lewis alexander walker and jackson hayes like if some of those guys start to hit and zion looks great in they get into that play in bracket and win a game or two to make the playoffs like just says. That's where the line so if you can do that. Then maybe there is. Room for you to overachiever. But as it stands. I think they're just too many teams between them and and making the postseason. Yeah hayes is also a question mark after his running in los angeles so we don't know what his status is going to be for the season. Rob are you excited or you. Like high on any of their younger guys. Outside of ingram and zion like. Are you a believer in awe. Are you a believer in care lewis. I don't know about the lever. I mean i have professional curiosity about some of these guys dodgy marshalls probably in that group. Too there's a lot of like. I'm still waiting to see what they can be as an nba player. We're we're waiting for some of these guys to arrive. I would say in terms of skill set and just the progression. They made over the course of last season i was. I was pretty bullish on what jackson. Hayes was becoming in the idea of the player he could be. But i mean for that player to be a dependable night. Tonight guy again as you said accepting the situation in terms of ability and what. We don't know their i. I'm just. I'm not ready to commit to that. I guess that's where to your point was the insurance makes sense to me why you would wanna kinda hedge against that bed but you are writing with these young guys one way or another. You're going to have to depend on them if you're gonna make make it to the playoffs or kind of level up as an organization or as a team i'm not. I'm not really seeing a reason to believe.

"For Laker we've never seen a closeout and how good he really can be. But this is the structure is so fascinating and so. I guess it's sort of creative. The way they put it together and so I like it. I like that and you've got some protection for the team if things just don't work out this season it's only a one year deal and we've always said one year deals does it really matter that much? What the dollar amount is? So if we're looking at it from that perspective that team is completely protected there if he really hits and things continue to work with him you keep him on for that a third year and then maybe either side could decide that they want to walk away or whatever. So I like this a lot. This makes a lot more sense than just a straight up three year $37 million deal. To me at least from the pelicans perspective. Yeah I also think too I've had a couple people say they have so many guards because now remember they had a Devante Graham until my son around ski. This off season they also still have Nikhil Alexander walker kier Lewis. Junior but don't think of him as a guard anymore. He's not that. He's really a wing a full wing. He plays more at the three than he does anything else for this team because he uses his size so well. He can really defend everybody but the biggest of fours and true centers. But anybody else he's fine again so you can really hold his own and he is a very very very good rebounder for his size. He may be right up there near the top of the list for best rebounders at his side. He is really good. So that's not a concern at all for me. You've got now pretty good roster balance. I think on this team I think it may not look great and they're probably gonna be in the fight in the playing to be in the playoffs in the west but but I think they achieve some good stuff this off season as far as cleaning things up a little bit giving themselves a little bit more flexibility and also adding some talent into that team. So I like this decision for them. And now Laurie market and the cheese stands alone he's the last one. Hanging out there of kind of the major restricted free agents. And we'll see and that one doesn't seem like it's going to resolve anytime soon. Not that could be one that drags on for another couple of weeks and then just ultimately ends in him going to qualifying off a route..

"Grabbing. I'm still okay with it. I'm still okay with that right now. You're saying so he said to us. Yeah yeah yeah. He's putting up the numbers and in this backcourt here with the pelicans tequila alexander walker himself. Be shoot from three last year. All he's he's a devante and definitely is he wants to get them up and sometimes they're on fire. I think i'll barely take a barely take kobe just because chance. He has a pop in and the next thing. I like. we're trying to get back to those forty five days for devante graham. But i don't know not only did zion say he wished that lonzo back didn't he. Last season say that he wished to kill alexander. Walker was playing more. Just not gonna listen to anything about. Who's getting the ball i. It's very confusing. I mean i guess is still in theory with lonzo moving. There's more minutes there to be had for alexander walker. Devante coming in there you know. He's going to get a shots that's what he does. That's why he's out there weird weird first couple hours there last couple of days really for the pelicans the decisions they're making. We'll see if you know pans out trae. Let's let's wrap this up before we take a break here until we get two more questions about see but do you have a big dealer team or decisions being made not so much a wti fantastic hit on earlier but the lakers are really getting the band back together there and it's not so much. Wt up because you see this happen with super teams. You gotta fill out the back of the roster and it's often old guys but men. Four signings for the lakers yesterday. All of them over thirty all former lakers can't as more thirty two second time drain away. No ellington thirty three his second run. Trevor rees is back thirty six first time since two thousand nine he'll be a laker and dwight howard at thirty five. Is there for the third time fifty five seasons of combined. Nba experience average age thirty four. And that's why. I think dave deformed nailed it with his tweet last night killing the lakers. The vanderbilt gumbel dude reliving the glory days sometimes it works. Rondo and dwight were great and twenty. Sometimes it doesn't west matthews marcus. All were not great. Last year but v lakers are getting old every player. They've lost in the off. Season is under thirty mantras. Herald kyle kuzma. Kcpt caruso likely shooter and andre drummond. Everybody they brought in russell westbrook included over thirty of the guys they signed yesterday. I would think only. Dwight really has an impact for the lakers. Ellington hit six threes in one game. But i don't foresee him playing playoff minutes. They've still got a couple of moves they can make. They got matching rights on. T. h. t. m. l. e. They gotta make those count. Otherwise we're looking at a lot of dolph lundgren randy couldn't bear movie good people. I saw the first one at a theater. i think they're like four or five deep. Hold on four five of these movies. They've made a ton of expendable. Yeah.

"Stephen adams eric bledsoe picks ten and forty And a projected twenty twenty two first round. Pick that by the way. The twenty two first round pick was via the lakers new orleans. Member has a whole bunch of the lakers picks deal. Yeah okay so but here's the significance to if you're listening to us now. The draft is starting to move now. Picks are starting to move every time you hear like in this case picks number ten and number forty are now in memphis. The lakers have pick number. Twenty two all of a sudden. Now the pick that the lakers have becomes valuable. If you're trying to get let's say a big name player from another team and you can package like you hear you hear. We're talking about the football players like three number ones well. They're three number. One picks moved in that deal ten seventeen while two number ones and number twos ten seventeen forty and fifty one so once the draft starts to move once. There's kind of movement in the river. Now more trade or coming this is just the first one and satiric blitz owes in this deal. And he's leaving new orleans. Does that mean. The pelicans are more likely to sign lonzo or does that mean. They're more likely to chase after. Somebody like kyle lowry and remember. They have two guards cure lewis and aqeel alexander walker. That are both young both under the age of twenty two..

"And i don't think things will be able to figure it out christian elite lob threat and elite point shooter playing that guy designed williamson is just a way of score. A lot of points won't really guard anyone given where we were last year. At least going forward we had superstar potential that later down the road and future assets that if we start being good teams might lead. Players may wanna come to figure out like a real coaching team and then that also dj augustine. Gordon daniel house. We got off a lotta bad money. But got on like more long-term bad money. Eric gordon and the extent but like i want bad money who shoots instead of bad money. Who all is why it value gordon. Augustine i we have two young guards. Entira lewis junior and mikhael alexander walker who have potential of jones jones and things. We can really count on getting august. Inning gordon gives us the ability to give them a chance but also if they don't show themselves than we have options that are at least cover and so we think we can play real five-man units with the team had this year's opposes. Yeah and i think christian would like ability to just dribble also like separates him from someone like myles turner where you can like continue place like you can post up zay and pass it to christian would attacks close out. Passes back design. You know just like that. it's going it would be. I'm pretty sure it would have a historically good offensive rating when those and those guys ingram shared. Get exactly and we're gonna we're gonna do something. It's stupid williams. Focus on offense defense so much unwrap side of things we are fully rebuilding christian would have two years left on his contract. There's no way we're a good team in those two years. "Disclosure. I'm a big lonzo fan. I liked him when he played for the lakers. I know the lakers didn't really want to give him up. But when anthony davis became available new orleans insisted on him. A lot of people don't know that last year lonzo shut thirty eight percent from three. I tend to root for him. I got to be a little careful here. Because i'm not supposed to talk about players. Who are under contract to other teams but unrestricted. I mean he's not unrestricted free agent. So if anybody makes them an offer. Let's say the clippers made an offer to lonzo new orleans could just match it and keeps the same by the way. It's the same arrangement. Detailing horton tekere has with the lakers. He's a restricted. free agent. So ramona having it's having it set up that way. Do you think lonzo goes back to the pelicans. If not where do you think he goes. I think he goes back to the pelicans just because he's too good of a player for them to just let walk or you know about this theory that they have two guards that they're trying to find minutes for that. They love who are both on. Rookie contracts nakano alexander walker and quincy miller are both super high on and they want to get him on the court. So if that's the case. And you already have eric bledsoe. And he's going to be a very difficult guy to move is a room for lonzo. There's room but they had. They had a choice to they had a choice of whether or not to have to trade him and they held onto him at the deadline. They had some decent offers for lonzo at the trade deadline. So i think they're smart enough to realize that you can't just let a talent like that you that you got as part of the anthony davis trade. Go for nothing. So you're not buying these reports that now. He would let him walk if he got to know that they would sign and trade if he gets a big offer and he wants to leave. I think they would do a sign and trade but other than that. I think you're much. I just you don't you. Just don't let somebody who's got that much talent who has value around the league for nothing. What about this rumor that he could end up back in los angeles with either the lakers or the clippers. Anything to that that i buy. I buy that because as you know. The clippers needed a point guard for awhile. They sort of converted. Paul george into that this year. But that's not really what he does. You think beverly probably walks you. Think reggie jackson probably walks. Yeah well i wouldn't be surprised. Reggie jackson back They can they can find some creative ways to keep and he really does like it here in l. a. He's made a lot of money. He was thinking about retiring before the season. So i don't think he's necessarily in it for the money now. If somebody throws a lot of money at him. I think he takes it but he. I like i could see the lakers. Doing something if they get creative with a sign and trade but they just don't have all that much to offer like by the way you want to give up toward talker. I don't time line for all this stuff. we're talking about. August second is when free agency opens. Is that when you would think this race starts no earlier than that. I think everything starts at the draft so restricted creating guys. I don't think you can trade do sign and trades right now but but for the upper other moves that will affect who gets in These free agents starting august second. It will all start to happen at the draft. Which is july twenty ninth. So that's pretty close. That's a few days before that. But like i said on the show the other day i think the lakers have a few things cooking. That could happen in and around the draft that then answer all your agency questions right like if they pull one or two of these things off then it kind of makes ridsdale lot more clear. They don't pull any of them off. If they stand pat then they still have a lot of questions. Answer and free agency have the twenty second pick. Is that something and i know. I'm asking you to speculate. Yeah is that something you think they hang onto or that moves as part of this thing. You're talking about whatever it is. Yeah i think they can. I think they can They can move that pick. I think that that's how it works. They also many ex. I think you have to actually make the pick for somebody that with the guy in atlanta. They did that a few years ago. As part of the anthony davis tree. Yes there's going to be a lot of moves a lot of names in the news and we're going to get answers about what the laker in clipper rosters gonna look like kawhi. Leonard had knee surgery. You still think he ops out i do. This is a back in yeah. I think that's how he makes the most money and the clippers aren't going to do anything stupid. they're they're gonna sign into the deal but But i think the only question is does he look elsewhere does he take meetings with other teams. I haven't heard anything specifically. But i just my gut tells me that he may not just be perfunctory. Then it goes back to the clippers. That maybe he does take a couple of days or something like that to explore some other options right whereas been simmons playing in the fall philly. Really yeah i think they want a lot for him. And i don't think i don't think they're going to part with him easily so the his value is not high right now and i gotta get an all star player so i just i feel like it's going to be like the hardest thing next year that he'll start there and then depending on how it goes. He's a guy right Yeah they're on. Benson is i mean. Look it did surprise me a little. The it doesn't surprise me that they would listen to offers. There was a. I think sean sean you had a report that They were looking for offers. I think who knows who calls you. Okay so let's put it that way. But.

"Herro tyler heroes definitely more along the lines of deondraye eight and where. It's like you see them perform in playoffs. And you're like wow this guy's going to be an important piece of this team now and going forward in the future. So that's the little bit of a differentiation for me. The other question that you could look at this as who's been the best rookie in the playoffs. And i think we saw him both in the sixers versus hawks series. It's gotta be yucca. Kong will or therese maxi congo. Probably a smaller impact But he's doing it more consistently whereas tirees maxi basically one six game at one point had looked like he was going to be like should he be starting over. Ben simmons that became it became a little bit easier. Maybe to wanna trade. Ben simmons having seen what tyree maxi did in the playoffs but getting necessarily to tyler heroes level. They weren't doing it every single night. But i've loved. I've seen specifically from a congressman. Like that guy looks like he's going to be ready to start in about a year. yeah he does. Look the stream team is throwing out. Reggie jackson bad one really come on and consistently been putting a point. That's a really good way of of course not a rookie. But in terms of just like opening some is being like damp is reggie jackson actually good cook because we thought maybe he wasn't a good team. Next question here actually involves parents man bone you know dunks terrence was the man in game. Six of the western conference semis. But it seems like not too long ago. He was still an end of the bench player. Someone whose name would trigger a high pitched who on the show. Who do you think can be the next guy go from who status to contributing on a winning team could be your fellow canadian. O'shea bruce brusett who has shown promise at the end of the season. Wow he's deep. Pull their turnip catnip personnel. That's from shank tank in new caledonia. So task a guy that's like you're like who the heck is this guy to contributing on a winning team. That's a tough question. But who would you peg here. Yeah it's definitely tough because you gotta go deep. No one expected terrence man to come up with a thirty nine point blender there. That was a great game was phenomenal to watch him do that. And i assume he is going to be a part of the clippers future. I don't think it's just a flash in the pan right. I'll stay in canada or set with that suggestion there. I'm gonna go with nicole alexander walker of the new orleans pelicans now you may say nah missing. Some people may say knob because those are his initials now. But i believe in him and i also believe that the pelicans maybe moving on from lonzo ball so if you think lonzo ball's gonna stick around. Who does make sense in. Theory around zion williamson. I'm not so sure that david griffin believes that theories don't win basketball games. They didn't win basketball games. This season and i think david griffin looks at even the ben simmons scenario says. I don't know if we're just gonna hitch our our car to to lonzo ball with sign williamson. So let's take a chance on this nikila alexander walker kid who's second year out of virginia tech still got time under his first contract So i i got some hopes there. And i think a probably a a non sexier pick is d anthony. Melton of the memphis grizzlies. Because i just. I just see him as a guy who could contribute like even a campaign rolled on this grizzlies team. That has so many guys that you could probably pick. You could pick grayson allen. You could pick ties john. There's there's a bunch of guys were just good on that team. He shot forty one percent from three last year. So i think the grizzlies just looking at a team. That should be in the postseason next year because they got a job rant leading them they got guys up and down the roster who will be contributing. You look at teams right now. Phoenix the clippers guys who are contributing from one through ten eleven twelve angry grizzlies. Grizzlies have that template going for them. They could be a team next year. That people are saying whoa. This team is in the second round. Small markets all over the place in the nba. Happening right now as we could see with the bucks and hawks pretty big market but yes sons and teams that. You don't necessarily expect to be there so Yeah i i. I've got faith in the grizzlies to be there. Some people in the stream team asking if nicole alexander walker is a shays cousin s. And i'm not proud to say it took me a while to realize there are two names involve one part of the same name and the cousin part. Don't be little longer again. Then i'd like to to keel alexander walker shea killed alexander. There's the but yeah going to be hopefully leading candidate to the olympics. Here coming up quite soon. I know nicole. Alexander walker of courses playing. She is not because of injury but trip back to the question. There that guy that's like. Who is that guy contributing. Do you want to try and predict somebody. Do i have to pick a canadian. Or is this just ultimate. What about this guy conversation. You can go wherever you can pick any any player. Okay patrick williams. He was a second team all rookie. This year. the balls will be in the playoffs next year. And he's gonna shoot more than seven times in a game. But i mean if osha bruce. Is the suggestion here. You can literally just pick anybody so okay i will pick in orlando magic and i will scroll canadian. Coal anthony anthony. That's a good one. He's gonna hit a game winner in the playoffs at some point. Market down really got an answer. Well i continue to be intrigued by anthony. Simon's adding Portland hit that began. Game against the pacers where he hit the nine consecutive threes and his numbers did actually take a tiny drip down this season. But he's three. Point percentage went up shooting. Forty three percent from downtown. So he's definitely a got that ability to shoot three and spread the floor and give the blazes something but he has to obviously work on his consistency..

patrick williams zion williamson david griffin Reggie jackson Ben simmons canada reggie jackson Simon Alexander walker ben simmons Melton alexander nicole nicole alexander walker next year last year second round olympics This year second year
