Dr. Jennifer Aaker and Naomi Bagdonas: "Humor creates a window into authenticity and trust."

"Cheddar. I'm really curious. Because one of the first example he said was she was kind of living this double life she was. You know this serious business professional by day and had this you know literally humorous lifestyle by night and weekends at. I'm curious gentlemen like in your studies. How common is that not necessarily common that people have you know a improv career on the side. But how common is it that people turn off some of their personality within the workplace. Such a good question you know with our students in even executives that we teach we find it know it to be incredibly common. In fact i would say that. Youtube seem to be exceptions to the rule. I think the only story is not only communist. I think there's a lot of reasons for that. We often believe that certain characteristics about ourselves like our sense of humor having some levity or even smiling or being a human have no place in the workforce because if we take our work seriously we should take ourselves seriously in a book. We dive into these four deadly myths associated with you mark and if you put the word deadly in front of it makes it sound more cornets. That's just a little scientific for you guys but the first one is you know the serious business daily math. That here's somebody has no place in the in the workforce or any place that takes yourself seriously but research shows that even just laughing has unparalleled effects on our chemistry and our behavior so it literally when you laugh together. It changes the chemistry of your rain to make you more prime connection more creative and more resourceful and more resilient stress very cafe at i in. It's really important to me to be around people that i can laugh with and i know you talk about it. Believe it's four different types of humor that that you sort of. Can you tell us what the four r. I wanted to gauge where we fit. Carl wants to know how funny she is. Yes of because. I have no problem saying i'm funny okay. The only described humor types. And then i'll take a whakatane now and carly all right. So we've got four humor styles the standup the magnet the sniper and the sweetheart so standups natural entertainers outgoing not afraid to ruffle feathers to get a laugh. Like to roast like to tease big personalities next is the magnet similarly outgoing but magnets tend to keep things positive warm uplifting. They avoid controversial. Humor the radiate charisma. They're the ones buying around of drinks at the bar while laughing next. We have these sniper so snipers are a little bit more introverted. And their style. Tends to be edgy sarcastic nuanced. so it's sort of they say they have an acquired taste and they're not afraid to cross a line in pursuit of laugh so really good at zerorez and with deadpan delivery. And then lastly we have sweetheart so again. A little bit understated in their delivery earnest and honest they again tend to use humor. That's more uplifting that brings people together. They would never make someone else the target of their job if they thought it might hurt feelings but they're not the ones that want the limelight and they're going to be on stage so those are four. Okay so this is. This is a best gas carly in the back of your mind. You should be thinking what you jan. Y'all as you should be thinking. What partly thing i got it. Okay all right so this is our best. Guess jandiyal you are likely a sweetheart and carly is part madinat and parts neighbor. Okay and when i say we i mean alex. Alex told assist so out on our team. Yeah alex get off camera. You need to be put on the spot now. Alex's terrified now yeah. I think that what's interesting about. This is my humor in the workplace is very different than my humor. I said i. I was gonna say that my humor style. Four the podcast or in the office is probably more sweetheart. But i think in in reality. It's definitely more sniper. Yes that is true. She's like midwest work muir bjork and carly. I don't know what this falls into but like any like seventh grade boy. Category link found. You guy humor okay. You always say that. Like i say that i like to eat like a child like i twelve year. Old boy Gushers stuff like that. Okay i think i am sniper. But i think at work i've probably do straddle i actually don't know which i'd straddle i think either stratas sniper in stand up or sniper polystyrene stand up. I would agree with that. I mean how often is that when you guys come across this. That humor types vary depending on what the audience yacht that. This is common actually at super healthy so in particular. it's really important to recognize. There's a powerful relationship between humor and status and so what we find. Is that as people get higher in status. Your humor style needs to shift and this is because one of the principles of of comedy is never punched down. Basically never make fun of someone who's of lower status than you and when particular we find for people who are senior executives in organizations is they tend to have more teasing biting edgy humor outside of the office but when they come into the office they really have to use humor. That's more uplifting. Because if they don't that people who are more junior on their team might take it the wrong way or might have hurt feelings so we often find that that's the case especially with senior folks and then the reality is just like anything else the appropriateness of what we say at home versus what we say at work is different. You know we have different responsibilities. We have different relationships with our colleagues than we do with our families. And so it's it's actually really good that you're not making all the jokes around the boardroom that you are around the dinner

Not only would they be closed and for almost a year now, but also converted into mass vaccination sites during a global pandemic. I mean, I think that going to Disneyland, you and I have been there together, Sherry and I think about Being there with my kids. My mom thinks made me go back through old videos on my cell phone of what Life was like at Disneyland before. All of this started even just a year ago and went to a Christmas party at Disneyland on and if you don't live in Southern California, California, you you may may not not get get it. it. But But when when you you live live here here if if you've you've got got Children Children and and you you work work for for Disney, Disney, as as we we do, do, since since it's it's a a parent parent company company of of ABC ABC News News That's That's where where families families go go on on the the weekends weekends or or days off. And for almost a year now that part of childhood for so many kids has been wiped out. The gates have been locked. It's been shut down or Dodger Stadium. All of the games that I've covered there over the years, the very first pitch by the Astros here and Dodger Chris Taylor slammed it out. Ah, home run, this crowd went understandably wild. How many times All of us were in situations like that in a stadium? Not thinking about a deadly virus. These Dodgers fans are celebrating. Right now They're waving blue towels in the air. And now many people here in L. A. I know I have numerous times have been testing at Dodger Stadium for cold, but it's been the country's biggest testing site cars sneaking around thousands of people getting tested every day that has ended. Now. This weekend, it's morphed into a 12,000 person, a day vaccination site like all over the country, iconic places that can handle big crowds are being turned into sites to get a shot. Disneyland's parking lot now has giant tent set up and now instead of it's a small world families will be going there to get the vaccine Sama Dodger Stadium, California Governor Gavin Newsom saying This is how we're going to get out of the pandemic, speeding up the administration, not just priority groups but also now opening Up large sites to do so, meaning Dodger Stadium, Padre Stadium, Cal Expo and beginning this weekend on radio and TV, New public service announcements raring trying to convince Californians of win their chance comes to get the vaccine when their number is pulled not to bypass the chance to go and get it. Good. 19 vaccines have arrived. You've been recommended by California's top medical experts because they've been proven to be highly effective now. Luckily, California is beginning to see hospitalization numbers leveling a bit. Sacramento's region in Northern California that stay at home order has even been eased in the last few days, but 300 miles south here in southern California, each leveling off a bit, but hospitals remain overwhelmed, and public health officials are pleading with people here. Just stay home. The damaging impact to our families and our local hospitals from this surge is the worst disaster our county has experienced for decades. That's L. A county health director, Dr Barbara for rare putting out her daily message. So now we turn to these iconic sites where it still feels like a movie that now they're mass vaccination sites. Not that long ago. It's where we gathered for fun. I have every hope is soon will be able to return his family's going out and having a good time, But right now here, at least, it is a battle reporting for perspective. Alex Trebek, long-running 'Jeopardy' host, dead at 80

"And I get the a P alert that Alex Trebek had passed away. Hey, lost his fight against cancer. And what a life though I watched the 2020 special lesson, Did you? How was it? Yes. Oh, so good. Michael Strahan interviewed him recently. And he was already getting up on his roof and like snow, blowing the leaves off and stuff. I mean, he was still very active. He hosted his last jeopardy game just less than two weeks ago. Oh, my goodness. Yes, it is working, but I didn't realize this about him. And maybe this was common knowledge. Just how charitable he waas how much he gave back and how he decided to write a book because he wanted that advance money to give to the charity Is he already supported and new Cherries? That kind of came into his consciousness and he was just A very generous man and to hear the stories about that was pretty cool. All right. Here's a little bit of that interview Lex from last night's 2020. Alex talking about charity and laughter. What do you want? Your legacy to be? A nice man helped people through hiss charity work. Was kind to everybody encounter, you know, Enjoy life. Make somebody laugh. I believe laughter is one of the greatest cures. That we can possibly have. It's right up there with prayer. Believe me, it is. I think it really is. You know, they're he's a even a 36 years. He's 36 years. What's crazy? I mean, even though he's Canadian, you know Alex. I would not want to be The producers of that show. It's crazy. Um, speaking of the show, Lex, I know you saw this on 2020. Here's the story of him getting the job on jeopardy. This is you know. Ah Ah, This is interesting. What brought Alex Trebek to America that phone call? Alex got a call from Alan Thicke, another Canadian from Northern Ontario, well known from growing pains. Of course, he was developing a game show for NBC called Wizard of Odds. Wizard of Odds. And when it came time for him to think of a host, he merely thought of Alex Trebek. I had accumulated 16 weeks of leave at the CBC and I took a leave of absence. Ah, holiday with pay and went in audition for a show Alex audition for the job and got it. They kept lately for Layla, but they can't keep the host. That's funny. Yeah. And then eventually they decided to bring back jeopardy and, ah And and Alex got the job on DH then, like I said, became just a sliver of pop culture and you know that you've made in pop culture when you're spoofed on SNL. And you know, they reference that last night on the special mean he was everywhere. Here's a here's a little bit of Alex's influence on pop culture enjoyed stepping out from behind the podium. There were women here in Jeopardy. You're feeling very sleepy. Oh, I'm sorry, Peter. We were looking for King Louis. The 11th. This automotive tool is used to tighten bolts. And let's just go from soup to nuts. He has been in one of the greatest shows of all time. The Simpsons and he has made an appearance in one of the worst shows of all time. Baywatch. Did you see Who you just rescue Hey, Alex, Meet Alex. Alex Trebek from jeopardy! I don't believe this. The New Season of Shark Tank

"Well, mark with the economic downturn. It seems like shark, tank is more relevant than ever. Do you feel that way? Also I love the show. I appreciate that yeah, absolutely. I mean look there are so many small businesses going through hardship. There's so many people who've been laid off from their jobs and trying to determine should they start their own small business and the answer is yes and Shark tank a good job of educating people and getting people to understand what entrepreneurship is all about, and you know one of my favorite sayings is one thing that separates the American the United States. Of America, from every other country in the world is our sense of entrepreneurship entrepreneurial spirit and that's a quote from that Joe Biden gave me at one of his events and I. It's so true and it's even more important today. That's who we are as a country. We are a country of entrepreneurs and Shar taken spires people young old in the middle to go out and starts company start companies and I'm so proud to be part of it. I love the show to mark any of you would be a better president than trump but tell us is there are there any special guests on this upcoming season? Oh Yeah we've got Daniela Bet ski who started kind bar. We have Blake Majkowski who started Tom Shoes. We have Kendra Scott of her namesake country company Kendra Scott. We have Alex Alex a Rod I mean we got a great crew of special guests and I got to tell you the deals are incredible. I did more deals this season than any other year before. And the entrepreneurs were intense. You saw one clip Alan tents that was, but they also had to quarantine. So by the time they got on, there were ready to go and you know. It was just so much at stake. We knew that we were studying the example for America to really get people excited about starting companies because honest guy honestly guys I think what we look back in twenty years at this pandemic twenty twenty won't find out that some kids from who knows where started amazing companies that have become world class companies, and if we can inspire those kids to go out and do that I, mean who wouldn't want to be part of that and seizing twelve is all about that.

"Reply. All and and I'm Alex Alex I'm GonNa tell you a story that I think he's sort of remember. But maybe don't know the details of okay so last spring I went to a therapist because I was having time with a bunch stuff and I was complaining to this therapist like yeah. I'm just like so obsessed with this. I can't something about this and the therapist said something to me that no therapist ever said before like. Have you ever considered the idea that you may have OCD? Yes I do. Remember this at the time like I definitely don't like whatever else is going on a deadly. Cd Like there's no Marta. My life that's about compulsive neatness or order like by like walking pig pen. I can attest to the truthfulness of that statement. But what the guy said he was like? Well there's a kind of OCD called pure how where you don't really have noticeable visible compulsions instead. You're just extremely extremely obsessive. Okay the that that comports with the person that I know yes so he gave me the test. I was off the charts and like it was. One of those moments is really helpful. Because we're all these parts of my personality. They've kind of struggled with that snapped into place. It's like finding your horoscope kind of like be. There's so many times in my life where somebody's like. Oh why don't you just stop thinking about it? Why don't you let it go when he get over? Why do you not just not look at that? And I've always been like you're joking but then there's other thing that happens where sometimes my brain just locks on the things that don't matter at all things that are just small and stupid lake assigned somebody the other day about this sci-fi book as a kid and I tried to remember the name. I couldn't remember the name and it was like. Oh this is the rest of my day. The rest of my day is trying to remember. The name of this book and my brain will not change the channel until I do. What was the book that you're in the arm? Thank God But but but like. I know everybody experiences that I experienced it. I swear got much more deeply. Okay I am saying this to you because the story that I want to tell you this week. It's about a man who's living in exactly that hell like the hell of having something stuck on the tip of your tongue. That just will not go away. I felt like I was uniquely qualified to help him and so I tried. The story is super smart.

"So you say the the pushback tom i guess my question is what what do you think that that pushback hopes to gain if there's a perfect scenario for brady specifically as he leads this how does he hope what does he hoped the result is at the end of all this really i have the same question i just don't know what the end game is i think the end game with crock is you put a big stack of money in front of him which is equal to or more than he made in incentive based money last year and he's fine he comes in and he follows tom's lead right now more than anything else tom really truly wants to spend time with his family as jeff darlington indicated as i've indicated you know throughout this off season he wants to punch out on football for the next few months now does that mean he wants to punch out on training know because he's still active it's just he's drying a hard line between being a part of the team and staying a football player and that to me again i don't know how else you can characterize it as in he is revolting against what the team has been about is this there's no other way to characterize it missouri is revolt is strong tom and i'm going to stay away from all these things if alex guerrero is still has some role with the team the alex guerrero stuff people can continue to fixate on it it's a symptom of a greater ill it's a symptom of an issue where a player wants to exercise what he believes to be his own ability to train his way to market himself his way to do things his own way to not be questioned maligned made fun of or any of the other things because he's trying to make himself a better football player the result but no i'm just so we spent so much time on alex alex alex alex and maybe alex might be times a year advising him that he needs to be more stand up and fight for his rights and be more of an individual and look out for himself a little bit more but in the end it's tom.

"If there were not sanctuary cities complete nonsense well most of the people we deal with first of all the entire county is almost majority uh hispanic and most but almost security mexican on top of that most people we interact with other illegal they only tell you they use all the resources of welfare the police unique event there there's no there's no one's bashful about that what what is what is infuriating though is what this protocol is doing is not having the jail's all this is involving to sanctuary states stuff is not holding people on federal warrants for their arrest right you know it's out of work but it's a federal whole they said uh ice oath horror people in recent immigration yeah pardoning is it a civil immigration detainers request it is that's whatever for into a that's why corrective myself it's not a yard it's a request by ice hold people so you so they can come and get them to these are usually previously supported show it's so we do and why is your own a gun the are they not had not on their hands landline happens well absolute absolutely but but unfortunately what you're running into is it's the concept of changing the makeup of the state and that's what they've done successfully and so this is there uh demographic voting base so they they all have the friends and families that are you know felons or have been in and out of jail and they don't want them deported on prior felt that he was let's say a domestic violence or something that would have been pledged to as a felony in a walk them being alex alex i need you stay with me we're we're down to two or more with because you you have this experience and we're looking.
