"So Alex Smith is kind of the Kevin Bacon of the NFL. And after so many Mondays with us in which he dissects what you saw on Sunday, you probably know that by now. You probably know that if you talk to him long enough, you end up realizing that he is this eerily central node in football social network. Just a few degrees away from pretty much everyone. But the reason we're doing a different kind of episode today is that no current player exemplifies that web stretching across the football universe, it turns out. On a number of levels, both social and historical. As much as Joe burrow does so today, Alex Smith brings us inside the mind of one of the most compelling quarterbacks in the NFL. As borough tries to save the Bengals season, and we learn how Alex himself might be personally responsible for changing how offense is played. I'm Pablo Torre, it's Monday, October 31st. This is ESPN daily. Do you know what we mean when we say tap to pay? Not to tap your shoes on the wood floor or tap a maple tree for SAP, not Tapping the shoulder of the server carrying or devs on a tray. By the way, doesn't seem like they always just run right past you. We mean tap to pay with your contact lists, PNC bank, Visa debit card, or payment enabled device. For lots of things, but especially if you're at like an NFL game on a quest for a Jersey or inflatable helmet or ankle socks, you tap to pay because it is the fast winning play and get yourself some more of those hors d'oeuvre while you're at it. Visa is an official sponsor of the NFL. PNC bank national association, member FDIC. PNC does not charge a fee for mobile banking. However, third party message and data rates may apply. So today's Halloween, Alex, we should acknowledge that at the top here because the Bengals are visiting the browns to celebrate the holiday on Monday Night Football, but they're doing it having already suffered something terrifying because your conversation with Joe burrow happened right before the news of Jamar Chase's hip injury, the hip injury that is going to take the best receiver on the Bengals off the field for four to 6 weeks reportedly and we'll get to unpack that together on this show in a second here. But in some ways, all of this is now that much more interesting and that much more tense. And this was already a story that was both of those things, right? Because the Bengals came into the season, the defending AFC champions, they started off the season with appropriately high expectations, and then they went out and lost the Steelers, and they lost to the cowboys, and they started off Owen two. And so what did burrough tell you about how all of this began? There's a lot there, you know, to the start of the season. I mean, I think we even have to go back to training camp. I mean, I think we all forget this guy had an appendectomy in the middle of training camp, missed a bunch of time. So you have the appendectomy in August. What was it like and how did that affect the start of the season? Yeah, it was tough. You know, I was in the hospital for 6 days. It was not very fun. Missed the next two weeks. I was able to get back to practice after that, not full go. So definitely, you can never get those reps back. And those reps that you relish to kind of figure out who you are as an offense and how you're going to play as a quarterback. If you go back and look at pictures, lost a lot of weight. And Joe is not a huge guy. And you don't play in the preseason. So I think, you know, now to look back after 7 games and to see that his first two, especially that first game was so rocky against a really good defense, a steelers defense that still had TJ watt. Right. But a little bit, I think that was some rust. Borough fires. Intercepted. Picked off at a kick 6 make a Fitzpatrick is an absolute bull hawk. I think that was the Super Bowl hangover. I think that was the appendectomy in camp. I think that, you know, I think that's what kind of showed up on film. And you're right. I mean, to lose their first two, this offensive line that had been totally revamped, this off season had given up 13 sacks in the first two weeks. And it didn't look sustainable. No. I mean, I think for us that in the media, they took, I mean, they were the talk of every get up, sports talk show in the morning about how bad they were. At first take PTI and the afternoons, all of these shows, all of these shows were throwing dirt on the Bengals because look, when you make the Super Bowl, and it's the Cinderella run out of the AFC, and you start Owen two, it does look like you're choking on expectations. And I know for me, more or less, I did write them off as overrated in my own head. And it was also the nature of it again, 13 sacks, Joe looked like it looked like they couldn't protect him. They have these great weapons. They couldn't use them. And it's funny for me to go back to after their week two loss. To go to Joe burrow press conference, for him, it was a bit of his relaxed moment. Everyone is frustrated, but like I said, we're not panicking. Two games in, we got 15 games left. It's all just take a deep breath and relax. We're going to be fine. We're not worried about it. And I think showed a lot of maturity and was really prophetic because they've obviously since gone on to win four out of their next 5. They've been rolling. He's thrown 13 touchdowns in one pick since then. And I think this last week, the offensive performance they put up against the falcons, I think kind of caught a lot of people's attention around the league and in the media that, hey, I think we all forgot these guys are the defending AFC champions. Zero and two. The sky is falling, right? And you kind of prophetically, you say, listen, I got to run down it. Let's just take a deep breath and relax. We're going to be fine. Yeah. Since then, you've won four out of 5. What's led to that change? We just found out who we were as an offense. You know, offensive line downhill run game, they're playing great. Now I'm running backs in the check downs. They're getting us 7, 8 yards, a check down, and then obviously our guests on the outside are going to do what they do. I think we're playing as good as anybody right now. We're starting to find our stride hitting our big shots. So we're going to continue to get better. When you listen to him, talk about what changed as an offense. And you having watched these games having broken down some of the schematically, what has been the biggest difference here, how different are those two versions of the Bengals, the before and the after here? Yeah, I mean, it's funny. I think they famously, you know, to go back to the AFC championship game against the chiefs. And that second half that we talked about so much. And how did the Bengals beat the chiefs and they went to this drop 8 conservative coverage and make the chiefs march it down the field and make them sustain drives and really slow down this high powered offense. Well, it's funny. I think everybody looked at what the bangles did last year. They were one of the most explosive offenses in the league. But I think teams basically use their same philosophy against them. All of a sudden they came out and it was like defenses, hey, we're not going to give up the big play. We're not going to let Ja'Marr chase beat us down the field. We're going to make this team march it. These are young guys still in the big picture. Joe's incredibly young player, these skill position guys are young. Zach Taylor's young. Their head coach. So I think they a bit of a wake-up call. They're like, hey, they're not going to let us keep doing the same stuff we

"Rogers in trouble. Looking ball knocked out. Quick covered underneath with no time left by Green Bay and the Giants come from behind and knock off the packers 27 to 22 New York is now four and one with a stunner in London. So with all due respect to the eagles who did edge the Cardinals on Sunday to improve the 5 ML. That was the sound just now of the most impressive win by the most surprising team in the most underestimated division in the entire NFL. NFC east, where three teams, including the Giants and the cowboys, are now four in one or better. And yeah, those commanders are still a lot worse. So today, we bring you another installment of quarterback confidential with Alex Smith, a man who was playing in that division as recently as last year, by the way. And he tells us why a good head coach is the most valuable commodity in the NFL. I'm Pablo Torre. It's Monday, October 10th. This is ESPN daily. Traveling for business and don't know where to stay. So Alex before we get into the NFT east and how phenomenally wrong, all of America was about that division. I do want to go to Tampa where I think America is angriest because the bucks beat the falcons 21 to 15 and Tom Brady, like for the record, you already had a career record of ten and O against Atlanta entering this game, but he wound up getting just a little bit of help from some old friends. Late in the fourth quarter. Brady retreats looking, looky, here comes Grady Jen. Shallow nod pass. Surely they didn't call slinging him down. This will be a horrendous call. This is going to be horrendous call. They're going to call Grady Jarrett for slinging down Brady on this sack. Alex, I understand fully that you are our quarterback. Your QB at heart forever. But what did you think when you saw the referees make that specific call? I'm not going to lie. I did know the ten and O I had heard it on the broadcast during the game, and then to see Atlanta fight back and make this a game and have a chance to win it. And then the call, the roughing the passer call. At the end, I felt really bad for all the falcon fans out there. I just, I mean, I don't know what else to say. It just is an absolutely terrible call. God, like 5 years ago, is when this happened, I think, you know, the refs come in to every single team and give present to all the clubs, you know, the points of emphasis, right? The new things and there was, it was a year that a ton had happened with Sachs. Really kind of introduced what was known as the strike zone on a quarterback, really gotta hit him above the knees. And below the shoulders, essentially. And then they introduced this slamming to the ground rule. And in the sense you remember, we talked about the concussion last week. I told you it's always the ground. The ground is always the worst enemy. Yes. And I think obviously the NFL knows that. And so in order to protect quarterbacks, they introduced this rule in the sense that if a defender like pile drives a quarterback into the ground and or slams them into the ground excessively, that that would be deemed a roughing the passer call. Obviously, extremely gray, right? This isn't like hitting a guy in the knees. I mean, the term excessively, it feels like a constitutional question almost. Like how do you decide what in 2022 counts as excessive? Even when you watch it, it just, I really felt like it was pretty harmless by NFL standards. And in fact, as Grady Jared's rolling him over, you know, he's actually underneath Tom. You know, it's not like any of his weight is on top of Tom. I can guarantee Tom, you know, in the last 25 years has been hit a lot worse. And I'm sure someday he'll open up about how ridiculous that call was, not today, probably, though. It's hard pill to swallow, I think if you're a falcons fan, it really reminded me, you know, I'll never forget that you're this all kind of got introduced, I got sacked by clay Matthews, my year in Washington before my leg injury, and he flat out pancaked me in the chest. Second down. Smith is Jackson my and a penalty. It's on Matthews again that he can't believe it. Personal foul. Rough in the past there. Defense number 52. Matthews feels extremely snake bit right now. He doesn't know what to do and what's right or what's not right. Mike McCarthy's absolutely furious. I'm holding the football and I don't know how I continued holding onto it. Hit me right in the chest. But in the strike zone, squarely in the strike zone. In the strike zone, I mean, put his shoulder right on my numbers and the ball. We go down and I'll never forget looking up and seeing a yellow flag and like just absolutely amazed. You know, you can't help but get up. Get up as a quarterback, you're just like, what do these guys supposed to do? We've already put in all these rules in place for the quarterback. And then like this one in a critical moment, a third down huge sack to change momentum of this game and all the passion and energy that you have to play with, you have to play with and then to get penalized for playing with it. You know, like it just is unfair. The old man, the goat, you know, getting the benefit of the doubt in this situation. And, you know, 11 and O at this point against the falcons, I think he's gonna be able to hold this one over there. That's just mean. It's just mean at this point, Alex. And by the way, speaking of mean. I like how you describe getting stacked by clay Matthews and feeling like you, in fact, had been sacked totally legally. The yellow flag flies and you're not exactly given that thing back, are you? Like, you're not raising your hand, postgame and being like, you know what? This should not have been a penalty. You know, as long as it's off the record, Pablo, that might be something I pony up to, but oh yeah. Just between you and me. Yeah, exactly. That was quote today. His code today was, I don't throw the flags, I believe. Was his was his confession without confessing it. Yeah. Yeah, I think we can all read between the lines there. But I move on to this cowboys rams Gabe, Alex, because there was just a totally legal destruction of a quarterback in that one. And speaking of feeling bad for things, I went from criticizing Matt Stafford in my brain for now throwing two more picks than touchdowns on this season. To feeling bad for him also because he has been now sacked 21 times in 5 games. And when you were watching this game, right? You were watching him, Matt Stafford, behind that rams ola, just facing Micah Parsons and that cowboys defense described the terror for

"Of it, but then again, concussions are such a, such a different animal, you know? That's the thing, right? Like you're the perfect person to talk to about this story for like 90 different reasons at this point. Not just the concussion stuff, but because you are the most famous case study in one of the visible, visceral injuries, right? That is your story to the story of your leg, project 11, all of that. And it does feel like Alex, there is still simply because of the visible nature of a leg injury versus a brain injury, it feels, it feels different as a result. Oh yeah, absolutely, right? I mean, yeah, the visible nature of certainly a bad break. And the scars to go with it and the trauma, the external trauma that we can see. And digest as a viewer and an audience. Right. The urge to vomit when you see the bone poking through. Versus the idea that actually this brain thing might be so much more problematic medically long term. Yep, absolutely. No doubt, long-term consequences that we're obviously only just learning and figuring out. And it's not visible, right? You don't get an MRI, and he tore his, he tore his MCL. He can't play. He got a high ankle sprain. Like those are things that are so clearly diagnosable. And when you look around you locker room, like, you know, there's a little bit, like those are things that you are not going to play through. The concussion is like, it's not quantifiable. It's not tangible. You know, like you're okay. Go play. You had to take that, you failed a test. That's why you can't do this? Yes, exactly. Like you told him he had symptoms? Really? All of a sudden, I think you do, you feel, yeah, you feel weak. You know, you told him you had symptoms. You didn't get cleared. You know, like there is an element of that, and certainly I think that's a conflict, that's probably a culture that needs to and I think is changing, but it's there. It's for sure there. I have just noticed that I appreciate in this conversation how you have sort of swung between the person that was playing. And the convictions you had and still feel. And now the person that is trying to be aware of what the science is saying and you're trying to see yourself, Alex, as if you are not yourself. You're trying to be outside the body of the person whose body was at the center of this story. Yeah. And the scariest thing, not scariest, but like the thing I have trouble with mostly now. My 11 year old wants to play football, you know? And grappling with that. You know, I didn't play until high school. And you know, again, I love football. Same, you know? And he loves it himself and wants to play. And so we'll see. Luckily, I've got a few years here to figure this out, but yeah, you know, you think about those things, certainly far more as a parent. You know, when you're playing when I was a kid and I started playing, I loved it. I loved every minute of it. And you just don't think about those things when you're in it. Alex Smith, thank you for thinking about all of these things with us today. Bob, thanks as always, man.

"We weren't part of the mainstream moment. Okay. We got goals though. Okay. That have been great spell your name right, damari. That's one of the things that I've been excited to grow every year. It just gets bigger and bigger. And like you said, the production company is really, that's my, that's where I'm excited to jump into next. I've always been a storyteller. I've always been somebody who wants to kind of educate the masses. But I've always been hamstrung by sports media. You know, like I still only have access to the sports writers and platforms that are around me. So to really take advantage of my own voice, both in front of the camera and behind the camera and tell the stories that I want in a little bit more creative way than what people have seen from me in the past and something I'm really excited about. I've been writing a scripted comedy series alongside of a really good writer named chuck Hayward. He's written for WandaVision and for dear white people and it's a comedy loosely based around my experience as a professional athlete and it's in these kind of creative projects that I really found my voice and how I want to express this new journey. I'm onto the world. And that's really what I'm most excited about stepping into next. And obviously, the game is something I love. So broadcasting is always in my future being around the game talking about it is what I love to do, I don't see that changing at all. So there's a lot of things, a lot of options, a lot of things on the table. And right now, I'm taking it all in being in a moment and really excited about the opening the future. Well, you always have a place here in Malcolm Jenkins, as you know, I've always enjoyed talking to you as a player. I look forward to doing it. On in the future, now that you're career is over. I mean, two super bowls, three pro bowls, 13 seasons, 14th overall pick in the 2009 draft, a thousand tackles and 20 interceptions since entering the NFL in 2009 over the thousand tackles. Nobody else has that stat line, an incredible career for somebody who came from a basketball school. So big Malcolm for you. Congratulations. I appreciate you. You know what? I'm surprised and I kudos to you. You're a good man of integrity because I rubbed it in your face every time I've been on the show. Entertaining. And how they always fall short of victory when I would amend the word always. No, I would amend the word always. And you know what? I was surprised at all other people that I heard from last year with the great debacle was I didn't hear from you. And I was like, you know what? Richard's a good man. Well, you know, I just bowed down. I just wait. I wait. I bide time. I lurk. That's what I'm a professional lurker. Malcolm. So, but hey, you know, I could set for a basketball school. Would have been great to have Michigan Ohio State and the sweet 16. We were there. Unfortunately, you couldn't make it. So we'll just have to do that down the road. Just have to do all that down the road. Malcolm. Okay. Malcolm is the only person you didn't call in during this whole concept. You didn't want any of this smoke is all I'm basically saying. You didn't want that call Malcolm. I didn't remind I didn't reach out anything. The black myself. Anytime Malcolm, please, whatever you want to do here in LA, you've got a place here. I've always appreciate you calling in and making my show part of your playing career and I look forward to more. Thanks for the call. Always appreciate the support, brother. Right back at you. That's Malcolm Jenkins. There is one of the best taken off going into his retirement from playing. We'll take a break and a recent retiree and Alex Smith will be joining us on the program. Look at us. We should have an AARP sponsorship. That's next right here on the rich eisen show. We'll take a break. Alex Smith, when we come back. Back in 2005, and he retired last year after 16 terrific years in the NFL. Now joining us here on the rich eisen show courtesy of Yukon. We'll talk about that with Alex Smith here on the program. How have you been Alex Smith? Rich, I'm doing awesome, man. How are you doing? Long time. No, a long time no talk. It has been that long. I thought it was me. Again, I know it shouldn't be about me, but I thought, did I do something wrong? Alex, did I do anything wrong? You did not absolutely not. You know what? I feel like as you get older and you get plain, especially the quarterback and there's a lot of obviously obligations and things you have to do. And you do, for me, and as I had kids and family, you get good at just kind of when you can kind of disappear into your privacy and it has been too long. It has been good to be on the show. Good to be back. How is it like to be around a fam? How's it like for you? Alex. You know, it's been amazing. I'm incredibly lucky. My kids are amazing ages. My boys are basically almost 11 to 9 without 6. And that was really kind of impetus of me retiring last year. You know, in a lot of ways, I'm even physically better than I was a year ago. But just your family ends up sacrificing so much. For your career, you know, we moved across the country. Obviously, football, not just on a daily, but an annually thing kind of just dominates our calendar. It dictates everything. Life as we know it. And they sacrifice for that long. And so finally, I felt like it was time..

"It feels like 5 years ago. But it's crazy. It's absolutely crazy. I think, you know, for those that don't know out there like, yeah, like where I was, you know, in a wheelchair couldn't walk, they'll talk about amputating my leg. I mean, half my leg was missing at that point. Still the prognosis was maybe I'll be able to stand, you know, maybe walk a little bit, like that was it. And I mean, obviously all the psychological stuff that comes with that for me that I felt like I had to process and deal with. But then I'd be lying if I said even when I was chasing this thing, I never really thought it would happen, bob, but I never thought I would actually get there. You know, yeah, I wasn't scared to fail. But I really didn't think. I just thought it would end way before I ever put cleats on and a helmet back on. And I'm so lucky and grateful that it just kept going that the steps kept. You know, revealing themselves one step to the next. As I was able to get onto my feet and start to walk again and learning to run and jump again, I'm just so grateful that it kept going. You know, and to the point where then, yeah, like all of a sudden it was crazy. I remember, I'm gonna go see if I can go drop back and throw, you know? Is absurd as that is. After everything I had been through. And to actually as terrified as I was when I ran out on that field in front of everybody because it was so unique, there was no preseason and so I'd never been tackled. Quarterbacks wear bright yellow jerseys and practice, like we don't get touched and so I had been practicing a little bit, so I kind of knew I potentially could go do this, but I still haven't been tackled and that was still just sitting there in the back of my head that if my leg was because the last time I did it, I ran out there, my leg, my leg crumbled. My leg shattered, you know? And here I am intentionally running back out there again. That's crazy. And so the mental process to go do that and then do it in front of everybody because I didn't have pre season or practice to do that in privacy. It was in front of everybody. It was like, you know, it was just a life-changing for me. Again, I'm so thankful that I got to go through it and experience it because I really do, the rest of my lives can be better off for it. This last year has been absolutely amazing. I don't feel like I have limitations. You know, I have to adjust from the moment I wake up and get out of bed. My life is an adjustment. And I'll never get what was before back. But I don't feel like there's anything I can't go do. And to have shed that weight because I felt like I lived with that for several years, you know of what was my life going to be like, will I ever be able to go do these things again and to have that kind of doubt and do have built up those mental walls and barriers? And I got Aaron Donald to thank a little bit to help break those down. You know, and it's funny, but it's the truth. And there's the first time Alex Smith is hit as he's taken down in sacked. Aaron Donald once again, the disruptor. And a timeout taken here as Alex Smith, thankfully does pop up in jogs off okay. You know, like to shed to a shed a lot of that. All of that, you know? And it was amazing. And that's really why I came back to play. It's crazy as it was. It was like for the rest of my life and the rest of my life will be better because of it. And again, I'm thankful, obviously, that it got to go that far that I'm lucky. I'm incredibly lucky. Alex, I mean, when I saw you walking down the hallway in our meet cute RomCom moment that we started the show with, like, you were walking as if no one could ever possibly guess that you were almost killed by the injury that almost.

"So Alex, what we saw in Dallas. With the Denver Broncos beating them 30 to 16, I mean, this was a score Alex that was more generous to the cowboys in reality actually was because this was a shutout deep into the fourth quarter. This is an offense that we have praised that the world has phrased all season. Here comes dak Prescott, you know, a ten point favorite entering this game, putting up some of his worst numbers. I was whole career. So what did Denver do to shut down dak in the cowboys? Yeah, I mean, maybe maybe so far through the season. This is, I mean, I think maybe the biggest, most dominant win, we've seen. I think in the whole NFL, maybe. I mean, for the Denver Broncos, the trade away their best player this week. To go on the road to Dallas, dak Prescott's Prescott's bag excuse me. He's facing the number one offense in the NFL. I mean, this offense is almost putting up 500 yards of game and they're thinking through everything 40 points at home. And to walk in there and completely shut down this offense, and then on the flip side, run for almost 200 yards. I mean, they dominated the time of possession. I think it was 41 minutes to 19. This was an absolute runaway train. I mean, it wasn't close. Like you said that the scores this evening, I mean, it really should have been 30 to zero. Yes. But yeah, that's off to Denver. I mean, I think this is what, you know, when dick tangier went there, who is one of the best defensive minds in football. I was with him a couple of years in San Francisco. I mean, he is, he is so good at taking away what you do best. And he even said it kind of after the game a little bit, I think that he had a little different plan going into this game and how to attack him. But, you know, they won the turnover battle. Teddy Bridgewater, I think playing really, really good football back there. I mean, take you through the one great touchdown pass down the side. Bridgewater, deep drop sets, home run ball left side. He wants Patrick Patrick is there makes the catch in Denver with another touchdown. Going at trevon Diggs, but what was in command, the entire time, they ran the football really, really well. And then Dallas couldn't get anything going on. I think at one point they were like, oh, 7 or something, or one of 7 on third down, over on fork down. Miss passes, drops, contested throws. Jack never looked totally comfortable back there. They never really got the run game going. This was just shocking. No, after the game, dak to summed it up by saying, quote, this feeling sucks. Yeah, I think everybody just has to be accountable for what just happened. You win as a team and you lose as a team. This is something we learned from and just filling sucks and make sure that we don't feel this again. And yeah, yeah, I mean, it must suck to be the guy leading the NFL and completion percentage. The guy at the helm of the most explosive offense that we've seen all year. And then suddenly just gets snuffed out like this and you mentioned big FanDuel after the game Fangio said that he thought that teams maybe just haven't played the cowboys the right way. Is there a blueprint here, Alex, that will pose a problem for the cowboys, the rest of the way here? I don't know. I think if the blueprint is, hey, go run for 200 yards for some and shut down the run and win the turnover battle, three zero. Sure, that's a formula to win every week, you know? Like there's your blueprint. I'm not sure how you go do it. I still think this is an elite offense. I think this is a bit of a hiccup. This is a good unit. The Denver Broncos defense is a top tier defense in the NFL. On the flip side of that coin? Dallas was off. Back in these receivers missed a bunch of opportunities here and there. There were drops off the fingertips, overthrow. So many drops. Yeah. They were kind of all over the place. So I don't see that. I just thought it was one of those weeks. One of those days for these guys and they're going to go, I think if anything, we really thought this douse defense, I think had stepped up and was playing at a crazy high level. But to give up 200 yards direction at home, let's say a lot. I A Dallas offense was on the sideline most of the game. They had a bunch of three outs and they didn't get back out on the field, Denver possessed the football all day, random football really, really well. And it was just kind of a one of those matchups today and they didn't play well. I think they're going to be fine going forward. Yeah, so you mentioned, of course, that the Broncos trade away von Miller, they trade away their biggest name player. They are sellers at the deadline. They chose though not to trade away teddy Bridgewater. And that was a thing that seems strange right up until I watched this game. And now I'm like, wait a minute, okay. So here we have the 5 and four Broncos Alex. And they're in the mix too. What do you think that locker room is like? Because this was a team that ostensibly was asking to be ridden off, and now here they are, suddenly in the thick of things. Yeah, I mean, I think when we looked at this team, you know, they started off three and old, but they didn't beat anybody very good. Then they lost four in a row. And now, you know, here back to back weeks, this is a big win. Huge win. To go into Dallas. And get this win and convincingly dominant. I think it's something that they're gonna really take with them. And I do think solidifies their formula more so I think going forward. How they're going to play. I mean, I think this is what they want to be. I think this is what they've envisioned themselves being dominant on defense. You know, good on that side of the bone. I think on offense. And that goes to teddy. I mean, here's what they were looking for. He was so good with the football today in command. Distributing, running the offense, didn't turn the ball over and I think that's something hopefully we'll see. Because again, yeah, they're right in the thick of that division. And if they get, they get hot and keep getting better. Yeah, who knows? Well, who knows because the team that we, I think consensus had agreed was the best team that AFC heading into this day was buffalo, like the bells, man. That was the cream of the AFC. And so we traveled to Florida now. And we're there because the bills are playing the Jaguars. And the Jaguars, of course, are double digit underdogs. And they upset buffalo 9 to 6. What did you see in this game? What went so wrong for the bills? Yeah, this one, I mean, was hard to wrap my head around there for a little while because there are a lot of people that think they have the bills maybe the best team in the NFL. I mean, the team has, they have the number one defense in the NFL. And I think their offense going into this game because like fourth or 5th, you know, you put those two together. There was not another team that kind of boast two top 5 units. And again, we talked about, you know, AFCs wide open and they look kind of a class above. Everybody, you know, got an MVP candidate at quarterback that's playing really well and then they go and get beat by Jacksonville. And you start digging a little deeper and you start realizing, I'm not, I'm not sure that buffalo has what you would call a big win. I'm not sure who you would say. I mean, they beat the dolphins twice. They crush the Texans. They beat the Washington football team. Their biggest win right now is beating the chiefs. You know, who we've talked about week after week is obviously kind of asleep. And so I'm not sure when you look at the numbers, I think they're definitely inflated, looking back. I do think this buffalo defense is obviously extremely talented, but offensively, man. They couldn't get anything going today. I mean, 6 to 9, this was an ugly game. There was absolutely no offense on either side of the ball. Hard to watch and Jacksonville did winning the turnover battle. Josh Allen, the bills, Josh Allen, that is made, you know, one too many mistakes and a lot of Jacksonville obviously to kick that winning field goal and get this win. But I do wonder that it did make me start thinking about buffalo and that they, you know, they've really run over some bad football teams, but they haven't seen anybody, you know, very good. And so again, throws that throws the AFC into.

"If you're in the chiefs locker room after a game like that? Yeah, probably was their best defensive performance of the year. I do think they played well, these last couple weeks. And that's another note, I think as a rookie quarterback, there's probably there's a few defensive coordinators you wouldn't want to face and Steve spagnola is one of them. I mean, he was just dialing up after blitz today and they were coming from anywhere and everywhere and he didn't he didn't take his foot off the gas so that that was a tough test for him. But I think on that note, yeah, that they're getting some confidence. They played good last week too. And I think that's important for them. I think to do anything they wanted to do that defense had to improve. They've improved creating turnovers and obviously I think just being a little more stout in all areas. But offensively, again, this was, I think this was the worst offensive performance we've seen this year from the chiefs. Well, yeah, why? What happened here? Because mahomes despite having that moment at the end where it's like, okay, wait a minute you can still make that throw to tyreek hill and they have the chemistry and all that. Everything else was miserable, man. Yeah, and I think finally they were turnover free, but just for stuff down the field, just really seemed off. This was the lowest yards per attempt. And Patrick's had in his entire career. He couldn't run the ball either. I mean, so I just felt like there was no identity. You know, they relied so much on the big plays down the field and again, they took their shots today, kept taking them down the field and coming up empty. They didn't hit a single one. I really think they need to, you know, I'm hopeful through these struggles that they can find their way. They have so much talent. There were so many numerous times tonight where they show a replay of Kelsey underneath and he'd be open, you know, expecting the football and yet the ball was going down the field and missing. So I think something there to learn from, it's a lot easier to learn from them after a win than a loss. That's for sure. But I think for all of us that continue to hold myself included that this will be the week that the chief's offense wakes up that bear of an offense is gonna wake up at bare still sleeping. So I don't know, I don't know if and when that'll happen. Yeah, no, Alex, it feels like the defense of the last several weeks now. And the offense of the weeks before that, if those occurred at the same time, there is the team that everyone was afraid of entering this season. But the schizophrenia of this team's identity, have you seen something like this? Is this familiar to you the way a team can be so night and day on two sides of the ball, depending on what we get is? You know, no, I think for me what really kind of hits me is that it's just hard to be that good that consistent for that long. I mean, they've been dominant for three years, a really on offense, and it wasn't really until the Super Bowl. That was kind of the first sign that we saw something and there's been a little bit of a hangover from that. I think teams are really kind of using that equation. There's a ton of cover to daring them to throw it underneath bearing them to run the football and we haven't seen them kind of counter that yet. But yeah, for three years, they were doing it. And I think we just expect them to keep rolling. Obviously, they hit a little bit of a rough patch, but I think when you really do pull back and think about it, that's only natural. I mean, the NFL is so, so competitive. There's so much parody from week to week into obviously here a little bit, you know, through the halfway mark that they.

"Podcast my name's jeff pejic. Hope you're enjoying these hallway sessions. I think this is. i mean. Certainly one of my favorite parts of the whole event. But i get to be here actually talking to these people so hopefully you like listening to them as much as i like conducting them. I guess is is the right word. I'm here with denzel. And alex smith jen. You're one of those rare. And i mean this rare sales people who's actually happy and there are so many of us out there who are chasing that dream. Chasing that accomplishment chasing that sense of fulfillment. That is often very fleeting. We know it's out there. Some people are absolute gluttons for punishment. Some people have reached it often enough to know it's worth continuing to reach but there's something about the energy that you have with you just walking onto the stage walking down the hallway sitting here for a few minutes talking with you. You seem to be very much in alignment as a person with what you do. And i think that is what's most inspiring about what you were talking about. Which is you know really creating that environment of success in happiness for yourself so really excited to dig in to this conversation with you and i know alex you're in the audience with me. What was your biggest takeaway. I just had to go to her afterwards. 'cause i met her last night too and she is happy. She's smile always smiling. And i just took away two things. At the beginning. She led with this theme of this fishermen story where it was you know fishermen goes to fish and you know he catches some fishing. Another guy goes. Why don't you stay longer. You'll catch more. And he's like why would i do that. I have my wife. My kids at home. I i know what makes me happy in. She said the quote. You know money can't buy you happiness. It can be an avenue to give you happiness but real happiness is kind of nick knowing yourself having self awareness and throughout her presentation she really kind of like hit into a lot of things that you could be doing because what makes me happy as is conversations. I'm curious. I really think that life is sales. I think there's so many things that we confuse the term so much selling with winning signing contracts money when things.

"Packers. This decade is the senchenko forty nine. They own the packers. They do make how they do. It doesn't matter. It seems like whenever they meet up a shanahan just just knows how to pick apart the defense. The defense has shown no ability to stop the run. The kyle has just like his. Dad loses her running back. They literally find anybody off the street and the guy running for a hundred yards So this might be the the double jinx fan in maine but I i don't trust bay. The road against san francisco. I'd just don't. Okay take serena cisco yeah when it was on bore yesterday i do you know that was. That was a lie. it was four. I think before the detroit game at one point. Then you guys sent over for which surprised me and I i might have might have thought about green bay at four but now by the way for people who follow all these rookie quarterbacks and they realized that kyle shanahan traded to get the pick that turned into trey lance and people might be wondering. Where's trey lance. Let me explain to you. Why trae lance will never play if jimmy garoppolo is healthy because jimmy garoppolo's record as a starter in the. Nfl is twenty six and eight kids. Twenty six thousand eight. And if anybody who thinks jimmy garoppolo camp play is not watching when jimmy garoppolo goes out to play my right on this chuck you are but i think garoppolo is italian for alex smith. He gets hurt. I remember when alex. No but i also mean it this way. Alex smith was in san francisco. He was a winning quarterback. He was a great winning quarterback and they decided colin kaepernick. You can get us through super bowl and they were right kansas city. Alex smith does fi record guiding. Patrick mahomes right. I i. I don't know i just. I have a feeling jimmy. Garoppolo is going to be an indianapolis colts quarterback in in a year to the next game philadelphia getting four at dallas philadelphia. Not a good team. Dallas not a good team. Now i don't spare me about an fairness are you sure about philadelphia. Not being a good team. I don't think they're a good team philadelphia. I don't know what we know in fairness i they okay. They they hung with. I think the forty niners are the. I think the forty niners are the third best team in after the bucks and the rams i think they're that good and you know they hung with them I know the eagles beat the beat. The snot out of atlanta When we're not. I'm just saying i i don't know i i'm i'm willing to say jury still out dallas on the other hand as a packer fan. I've taken so much. Delight in watching mike mccarthy's inability to manage o'clock this last week it was. I couldn't see the clock. where are you man. there are everywhere not like a high school where you're like. I'm not sure like i go to my kids game. You're wilson and maybe they run. The clock scoreboard. Maybe they don't you know on on any given game. This is the nfl and he claimed he couldn't see and then at one point said oh. A referee was blocking the urine. Nfl coach. you shouldn't and you're the dallas cowboys you should have. Somebody who's fulltime job is to manage the clock. Did i ever tell you that When i was doing monday night. Football mike. mccarthy was the coach of the packers. And in one of those pre-game sessions a day before two days. Before mike mccarthy began to talk about something and i asked him a question about jobs he'd had before he was the football coach. His favor job was he was a toll taker on the pennsylvania turnpike was disfavor. Chop said that three in the morning four in the morning naked people would be in cars dropping money out of the side into the toll booth. You love anyway philly in the four. I'm gonna I am going to take those points. I think it's just too many points. I think philly's this is a you know and This is extremely entertaining game. 'cause dallas does not have a good defense. It's not that bad. But i think dealing move to bonn game entertaining. At least we'll be forced to watch it. Speaking of people who do not have good defenses. Atlanta has allowed eighty points in two games eighty points. Okay one last game. The football team is on the road at buffalo. Nobody looked better than buffalo on sunday. Nobody you might say. Somebody looked good but nobody looked winning. Thirty five nothing in miami on the road. The football teams getting eight at buffalo. Who do you like to. I'm just gonna play a numbers game here. I understand why this numbers high. Yep i just i- i washington football teams not this bad. They're not a this feels like what what the spread should be if they were. They were facing the giants Not the another football team. I i this this field high and after the blowout I'm i'm I'm giving give me the football team on extra rest by the west with the football team already. You know i. I i know and not only that. I've spent my whole time in washington hating the hating this team le enjoying their downfall in all of this stuff. I can like ron rivera. Some finding myself you know. Go get them running in the washington. Rivera's is what. I wanna call right now. So i i like the guy feel like he's you know he's a nice liter this team. I don't have decided these the best coach they can have but i. I don't know maybe. I'm giving them a bed. That modem certainly make the monkeys life more miserable though. I did him the monkey. You'll have to come on the celtics left podcast fuel-cell i'm sure nigel can arrange a betty can once again. This is two by two and it is a band called divine sweater and they will be appearing in dc dc nine wherever that is on october. I i play in chuck. Todd chuck todd had a fantastic sunday chuck. Todd was two and five in week. One and two and six by thursday night as he lost by betting on the washington. Football team in the giants covered. Okay so that makes him to and six on sunday he was five and one. Do you want you can take a bow on this issue. Were five one and sunday including baltimore which to me looked hopeless in the third quarter. I'm like i'm like the american electorate a moderate by extremes. We get to the center with this extreme It's a it's a real complicated way to go. Five hundred which also means Benefactor betting real money thanks to the juice but it's also reminder that the first couple of weeks hard and look how many you guys sent me over the lines twice them and i don't think this has ever happened. But of the of the of the seven games you sent me six six six six change. I don't that to me shows you even the pros. Don't quite know what to make the nfl. See you know what i mean. Everybody's still trying to figure out where everybody stands. There's no there's no consensus. Let's start with the first game. Line shifting thing. Because i had written down my original line was new orleans plus three at new england is thought to myself. New orleans is getting points at new england new orleans okay. They had terrible second week but look what they did in the first week and the ones getting three. That seemed like a lot to me. That is now down to two and a half. Who do you like in that game. Well i don't know. I'm i'm with you. I saw that line. And i thought three three was definite. Now you know there's a reason it got under three point every half point matters in the nfl This is no. I'm gonna stick with the patriots because this is new orleans just third straight road game right if you count the first jacksonville. Obviously that assistant coach thing i think. Apparently you need seven assistant coaches to keep jameis winston from throwing interceptions or at least we'll find out and speaking of somebody who's kind of like me with gambling james winston one week he's going to be a hall of famer and the next week is going to do these things. And that's how new orleans fan so it's going to have to get used to it but now i'm i'm gonna go with the pats here simply because of the third straight. The process new england beat to and now they should be to know they had a fumble. Going in for a score will not like not at the goal line but in late in the fourth quarter in their first game. That fumble lost the ball lost. The game is going to be one and two and they. That's right. i am a scene that way at the start of the season. Now you're right. Let me go to the next one. Where the line was a thunder shift. Overnight thunderous because it started out. I'm so happy insanely to me. Totally insanely that tampa bay was giving one right or getting tampa bay was getting one at the la. Rams getting one tampa bay. Tom brady has nine touchdown pants. They were getting one. And i love the rams but come on now they are giving two and a half and that is no small movement in the line. This a game that everybody is going to watch this one. Well the reason. I'm happy about it. Because now i feel good about taking the rams. I was wanted to find a way to take the you look right. The and this is what i'm betting on here. That the rams defense is better than the bucks defense and while the bucks. Offense is certainly better than the rams offense. I think that can balance out. I'm not obviously ready to sit here and claim the rams a home field advantage for all. I know they'll be half as many there'll be place it'll be half brady fans have rams but Whose defenses look better in the first two weeks tampa's or or or the rams and the rams have beaten their games you know. I look. we're going to nitpick. I'm gonna picnics here. I think tampa has been sloppy. And i don't think you copy against a good team and the rams game this'll be the wake up call in rams yup so you're getting two and a half you know you're getting two and half at home points now. That's what i never. I looked at that. One rams that tampa bay getting points. I said you gotta be kidding with this okay. The next one went from six to six and a half. Maybe these are the charges. The san diego chargers in my mind but the la charges on the sandiego charges that kansas city charges getting six and a half. And i will just say this. I understand the kansas city lost the baltimore. Kansas city hasn't looked at sharp this year in either game as they looked last year. The chargers are better than you think. Justin herbert is better than you think. This is a division six and a half is a lot. You see where i'm lying but i'm with you and for everything you just said and look at the. You heard me last week. Why took the ravens. The chiefs don't cover. They find ways to win. Don't cover by the way they wouldn't have covered. Had they won the wanna feel at. They fumbled the ball right like this. Aren't they do just enough to win. And if you're playing a good team one mistake can cost to the game. As as they've done they've been slashing. And i'm and the chargers are better road. Came home team you know. Give me the charges on the road. They've learned how to plan the road every day. You know when when they're at home and they turned out to be a pretty good road warrior team on spread. So i like. I agree with you on this one. I would take the charges on this. An extra two teams that lost disappointingly and almost catastrophically last week. Seattle blew a fourteen point. Lead in the fourth quarter to tennessee tennessee. By the way. Big obsta tennessee in baltimore for what they did last week. Seattle is now giving to at minnesota minnesota thirty seven yard field goal to win the game and didn't convert kirk cousins. Who anybody listens to this show knows. I've never loved kirk cousins. But he did what they paid them to do. He put him in position to win easily. Yeah so seattle is giving to. I guess they feel that seattle is going to be highly motivated giving to at minnesota who you liked. I told myself at the beginning of the year. I was been winning doubt on minnesota that against kobe and I i'm not gonna put. I don't trust this minnesota team. I feel like it is one bad game from completely. That locker room completely coming undone. Zimmer's got a little pressure on them And i just feel like seattle can recover from a bad loss. Better than other can so I know it's on the road which is a little disconcerting. But but i just don't trust minnesota. I don't trust what's going on and now. Gimme gimme the sunday night. Game is once again. Green bay in a national game green bay at san francisco. San francisco is to an old. They beat too bad teams and detroit game inexplicably. They gave up about twenty points in the fourth quarter. And then they went to philadelphia. Philadelphia is not a good team. They beat philadelphia. They held philadelphia down their defensive. Very good in that particular game they destroy jalen hurts by. Aaron rodgers is not jalen hurts. Aaron rodgers and the green bay packers in san francisco. Getting three and a half your packers fan your whole life right i am i am i i the largest unofficial.

"Off but in the morning. It's going to be chilly john. It's gonna be fun so let me get to. I think there's a lot of sort of soft questions but the hard question for most people is. What are the chances of the intersections of kepco and shambo who have not pin pals. What are the chances. I assume there's no chance they'll play together but but will they be in each other's company and are people looking to see how that works. Yeah more than any other event in golf. When you're in a team event your intersections are often and the the guys are around each other a lot and they'll get along this week tony. They'll play nice. It'll be coon by ya. It'll be fine. I don't expect him to play together either. Just doesn't seem like steve stricter To do that. He's such a nice guy. Isn't very confrontational like butch harmon. For instance is one of the all time. Great golf gods The instructor butch harmon Gozo dear friend who was telling me the other day. I put them together. I match friday morning. Get it out of the way. Just go They would make a great pairing by the way but they don't get along as okay. Not everybody has to get along sports. But they'll they'll intertwined a bunch In the team room Having to walk around with other matches when their matches complete those kinds of things but if they do play together tonia i. I'd be surprised. But you never know. I mean i think it'd be great television. If they play together first thing out friday morning that'd be that'd be very very cool. I my question about the shambo. And i like to shambo and i think what the shambo doing incompletely reshaping a sport or trying to is very very intriguing to me but he is also practicing for the long drive contests which is going to be held the day after the ryder cup. How if you're if you're steve stricker how do you not go to the shambo and say what are you doing. What do you mean you taking time every day to practice for the long dry. What are you doing as as that come up. He hasn't said something to privately In that regard i. I don't think it's gonna actually affect his game whatsoever. Look telling you watch as much golf as anybody. I know and i know does well And i know wilbon hates the shambaugh but yeah he is he is he's taken over the mantle from bubba watson as the most interesting person to watch in all of golf and if you've watched him say all the way back since say wing foot last fall when he won the us open outside of new york city you know. He goes out there and rips that driver on the range every day. I don't think is preparation. changes whatsoever. Just because he's entering the long drive contests on monday i. I don't think there's any difference in what he's doing. He's always done this or always meeting in the last twelve or eighteen months. And i just don't think it's that big of a deal for him. I think it looks like a big deal to us. Gee tony it looks like you tear your acl. Just watching get a drive that hard on the rage as opposed to actually performing that way. So i don't think the other guys know a little quirky and they that he's into that other kind of stuff. So i don't think stricter cares. You have to consider what this might mean for matchplay particularly if he has the safety blanket of a partner. You're looking at what means to get off to a fast start with the right wind conditions. One seven could be driveable for him. And there's an early par-five most players are going out left. And they might have a three wood into the green. He was cutting quarter and had one hundred and twenty yards. And so i mean with the right conditions. it could be right or cup changing Well i guess. I i'm sorry telling you things on that Michael the golf course gets to be set up by the home team in the ryder cup. Unlike the president's go and the way the golf courses set up this week wide stairways not thick rough at all and they're probably going to be about three or not just seven. Michael they gave me about three or four holes perhaps depending on the wind and the way carry the pj of america decides Tea boxes Three or four holes could be driving. I would be to me forget personality and all that kind of nonsense price. The shambo should play in every match. He should play in all five matches. He drives the ball farther In match play You know you never know what's going to happen. And by the way at the end of the day as far as he hits it match usually is a buddy contest. And outside of harris. English and zander schlafly on the american side rice in the shadows. Probably the third best putter right now on the team so to me to shambo with what you talked about michael and the way the golf courses set up with not a lot of rough and wider fairways and greens that are softer than usual to me. I didn't shambo ought to be playing every single round. Can i just ask question. There's no chance he can win the long drive contests right. These guys are beasts do that. He's not gonna yeah different deal. I mean look he can roast it out there But those guys are playing different sport like he's playing a different sport than we play when we go play off. Those guys are playing a different sport in that particular skill set. But it'll be fun to watch him. Get after. Because i mean. Those guys aren't great golfers. He is great golfer. So you know it'll be fun to watch him compete against those guys but no he's not gonna win that i'm assuming that everybody on both teams has played whistling straits before because it's been the host of a major too right. I mean they've played it like they're familiar with the course right now. The last time there was a major. They're telling you it's twenty fifteen. Pj championship jason day. So it's been six years there. There are some guys who have not played up until this ryder cup. Where you know players have come over to the golf course. Looks like but yeah there. They're a few guys on both sides actually who've never seen the golf course before. Okay all right. Stricker much to my surprise because i think patrick reid is a great ryder cup player. Much surprise he left..

"Eight or almost eight seven the second pitcher for the nets to go. I mean he went a long way but when you see him pitch when you see his motions before he pitches the rocking. Back and forth on the mound. Three time in rhythm with the batter pumping the back. It's just it's very weird. It's very weird. He had a very good outing. But it's very weird. Nats nats won that game. Are they in last place or have they avoided last. I think they had to sweep the marlins to get out of less. So i think they are decidedly inland okay. So we'll see about that. I have a story to tell. And i want to tell the story in the open to the show before we get to. Steve sands at kohler. Washington kohler wisconsin. You know that. I've talked about things that have happened in cars on my street right. I told you about a person who was dead in a car. A few years ago the found found found body. Okay in the same area. That i'm gonna talk about now. This is up the street towards the corner towards the corner. Then i told you about the people who used to just park rental cars right rent. A cars like sloppy little hondas and just park them there and then somebody else would come by and take them and i said what. What are we doing. Sloppy is a of term than what you use. Were junky cars. That's still kinder you know. And i said what are we doing here. This is not a lot. This is not an avis lot or hurt slot. This street is a residential street and is not zoned for having rental cars. You know for having the guy from national come out and say just go down the aisle and pick what you want a staging area all right. This is not what it is for the last ten days a giant and i'm not exaggerating forty foot. Long trailer is parked in that same area on my residential street. A forty foot long piece of junk trailer. That is painted half white and half gray. It is not it's garbage in airstream camper right. Yeah whatever it is it is not mechanized. It cannot by itself be started and driven out. It has to be towed. It's forty feet long. My kidding about that not at all. It's forty feet long and it has partially obscured deliberately pennsylvania plates. It belongs to no one here that i know of no one here on my street so after ten days it was by the way dropped off there by a pickup truck with ohio plates. Not dc plates ohio plates and everyone just for a second because you mentioned zoning and one of the issues with your neighbor versus other dc neighborhoods is you don't have as zoning residential parking doesn't have to say zone to zones so you actually get this pretty frequently because you're in between access points to maryland and you happen to be on the street that has ample street parking versus some others in this area. That's right all of that is right. It's forty feet long. It belongs to no one here and it is an eye sore. It is an eyesore enough. If i lived in the house that it was parked behind. I go crazy. Don't crazy to remove the blocks. Just let it roll down let it roll down the hill. It is it has. Some of the windows are open. And i don't i don't mean by open that they are open and leading aaron. I mean there's no shading on them and there's just junk inside again delivered here by a pickup truck from ohio. That chuck is now gone yesterday. Nine or ten days into this. I called my elected representative the councilwoman from ward for where i live. Genelius louis george. I gotta recorded message. And i said into the recorded message. I gave my name. I gave my phone number twice. I gave my street address twice. And i explained that this piece of junk has been sitting here for ten days and i went further to say that my neighbor up the street had said she saw two young men over the weekend working on this thing and she inquired. Do you live here and one of them said. I live a few blocks away a few blocks away. And i said in my recorded message. Well why does he put it on his street if he lives a few blocks away. Why is it on my street. A few blocks away. I received no response no response last night. When i was out with a dog i saw a truck pull up behind this particular thing and a kid get out late teens. Early twenties and go into this monstrosity. I got his license plate. Dc license plate by the way adc license plate. now. I am awaiting. I mean this is not. We're not an rv lot. We're not selling campers here. This is a residential street. We're not a place where you just pay. We're not a gas station. We're not we don't have a big sign that says we repair old. Rv we don't have that it's a residential street. There's no commerce on. The street is just houses on so if this camper belong to a neighbor on the street would you be okay with us if you least knew the owner and the time that it would be on this yes because i could approach that owner and say what's the deal here. Yes since the pandemic has started. This has been happening in your neighborhood. A lot of boat hitches have been popping up and they are dropping them off at these corners that have easy access point. Now you have enough cars. Why don't you just put one in front and one behind and say when you're ready to when you're ready to get in her move this thing come find me. I did was what i thought was proper. I called my elected representative sure. There's been no response. No response yet. Perhaps this will get a response again. My elected representative is denise lewis. George and what. I said in the message to whomever would listen is what are we. What are we doing here. What are we doing here. This is just an abandoned old piece of junk. rv it cannot be moved by itself. It doesn't have a motor. It doesn't have a starter. It doesn't have a steering wheel. It's been here for ten days. My overreact was just a few bits. A starter you can take it anywhere. It's like a solo. Stole a my overreacting to this. I certainly don't think so. I mean excuse me when. I've been over here and i've seen that you can't miss it. I mean it's a horrible thing. I mean it just sort of just there and my question is who are the people with the ohio trump. That just left it here. And who is this kid with the dc plates. Who's working on it. Well is there. Is there a time limit mongol. Maybe you know this better than this happened to you. And you had the delaware plates that would because you have to go through your local precinct. A visit as not as i say to. Crv it's got pennsylvania plates now. Nigel was so excited this morning he was gonna come in and share the news about his. I do home purchase. He was really excited. Get close to work no real commute. I purchase that. I wanted to. I wanted to be so close to you that i could be here for. You know it's terrible and yeah you just want to say look if this live somewhere in this on your block. What on your blog. Now you don't see how your neighbors like it. I mean you know how crazy stuff with my neighbors and you know the fallen trees in the in the trash cans. Now take care of your stuff. This is no good. You can't do that now. And their defense they might be saying we view this as a neighbor not street by street and actually just park forty four i. They would say based on the traffic flow of this neighbor. This is the easiest place and you know because we've gone through these processes. That's why if you have the paperwork to have this thing on the street then you have to sort of retreat but right now just seems like we found a place to dump this. There's no one checks this corner so there's been a pattern of this behavior. So am i right to expect a call back from the council members office. You're right to expect it. Will that happen. I've left messages over the things that have upset me on my block in the last several very famous name. I gave my address. I gave my phone number. Came through three one one. Do you know the dc portal to get things done. You're going to get tickets opened and closed. Sometimes those tickets come back years later if you're mentioning say a parking sign in a residential neighborhood doesn't make sense or a bad intersection so they might be working on it but i would've expected a phone call by by middle of tuesday. You know once you got back into the rhythm of the workweek. This is what i'm saying. It's a piece of junk it's piece of junk doesn't hands the visual pleasure of this block. I'll just say that. Now when you lie and blowing up the voice mail address or the little house now my dress. I'm year myself. Yeah said who i wanted to see..
"alex smith" Discussed on ESPN Daily
"Intercept to the backfield goal shovel. Pass off chapter by troy reader. And i'm just curious because for me. I didn't play quarterback alex smith. I don't know if you know that but for me and for the internet it was like a jarring thing like i didn't know this happened. Did you know that intercepted shovel passes were their rarity. I did know that you could enter the shovel pass I i got i got it offend carson on this play that that's a play that a lot of the nfl runs They're pulling jack. Doyle is tight. End kind of lined up on the tackle. He's he's poland and volunteers guard. And it's it's basically a running play But you're just shoveling instead of handing it off. And for some reason jack doyle decided to run behind the defensive line I have no idea why did it. There was a little bit of penetration on the play by a guy named aaron donald but still the place should have been just fine. I think that's a hard play to ever see when you're the quarterback and you're reading the defensive end you go to for pitch it and i'll send your tight end isn't area decided to duck behind the d. line i really gotta give carson get out of jail free card on this one. I don't think it was his fault. You use daily. Use daily grants you alex amid the ability to dispense get out of jail free card the insight that we want. I was not expecting this. But i respect it. I really really got on this. But it was useful in the game costs and then also in florida onto the floor down at the one on the first drive and didn't score an emmy guy kicked one of those get points which would have been a huge upset. I think against a really good rams team so i i'm not giving up on carson wentz. He was banged up all camp. He didn't get a ton of wraps he played last week. Basically on three days practice. I love him. Being back. With frank. Reich i i really do think I'm hopeful this isn't a serious injury. That tackle was really awkward when he did injuries ankle. Hopefully he can get back out there because i think it'd be good for football To get him back to kinda where we know he can play from potential sampling. So let's let's get you out on another trip down memory lane because you mentioned aaron donald alex and you know i just want people to respect what that actually is like what it's like to have the aaron donald experience. Have you blocked those memories out as well as that under the couch tried again again. Probably you're bringing up a lot of bad memory said. I know this is like the world's worst psychotherapist. I'm asking you. Hey remember that time. He got sacked. Aaron donald four times and your game back from injury like what was that like. Yeah i do associates..
The Zach Wilson Era Is off to a Disastrous Start
"So let's talk about zack wilson. Because you mentioned him and watching him lose twenty five to six at home to the patriots and bill ballot check and bill. Bella check destroys rookie. Quarterback's he consumes them. He picks their bones. That's all stuff that we know already cleans. His teeth with the bones of rookie quarterback is what he does but we saw jets fans alex. You know throwing in the towel and it's week two. And i say that because they were literally throwing souvenir tales from the stands. And zach wilson. The four picks. I'm curious about climbing into your memory bank here because what do you. Alex smith remember about playing the colts back in two thousand and five pablo. I've definitely tried to forget this one all right but we're good. I do remember my first career. Start the number one defense at the time and like the colts were in their heyday. Payton was rolling. But that defenseman dwight free robert matt Bob sanders. i mean it was. It was a joke and yeah. It's all a terrible blur for me. Like four picks i think my rating was it like it was a disaster but i think that was a clear design i was i just turned twenty one. I mean i played only two years in college in a spread system now trying to plan their center. Probably this become this pro quarterback whatever that is and It was not good. I was definitely i. I felt unprepared. And it was a disaster and it showed. You've been a guy who had a four interception game really early after being a top. Pick your the number one overall pick of course. What do you counsel him. Hypothetically what do you stay to him after a game like this if you were to visit him. Alex smith kind of like a ghost of christmas future. What do you. What do you tell a kid who's very talented but also just had a day like this. I think exactly that. I mean i think you gotta go like for me. I just go to the third and fourth picks that he grew and pause before the snap and look look like jack. It's ten to three on this one. It's in the third quarter we got. There's a ton of football left. There's no reason to throw this ball up The way he did and then even the second one in the fourth grade. I mean i think it was thirteen to three. At that point. There is still time. Left like again I think going back to just doing your
NFL Week 1 With Alex Smith
"Alex smith. Man you were. I mean first off your ties loosened. Let's start there. You've just spend your first sunday as my teammate. now at espn. You were last. Season's nfl comeback player of the year. We all know that incredible story. But i believe this was the first time in twenty five years you have not been playing football or rehabbing for football. So how did it all feel for you personally. Just being out there and not being out there. Yes you're right. It's been twenty five years. This fall that i haven't been doing football some fashion or another been in training camp incredibly different but Awesome i had a lot of people reach out to me a lot of like stanley france. You know this last week in mackay. We're thinking about you. How are you doing. And as honestly i. I'm so at peace with the way my career ended obviously grateful that i ever was able to make it back in to be doing what i'm doing and you know still be around the game in some other capacity. I still had butterflies this morning. So that was amazing and looking forward to this challenge. It's it's it's fun
"alex smith" Discussed on The Adam Schefter Podcast
"And into kansas city in my run their united seven seven coordinators in my first seven years. Not exactly the way you to wanna draw it up. But but an opportunity to play for a ton of coaches a lotta great minds. yeah so so lucky been around. there's a lot of ways they've get it done Learned a little bit. I think from from all them look better. Rogers let's try your broadcasting skills. What's your take on that situation and how it's gonna play out right now. Yeah i mean. I think it's it's so crazy that it's gotten to this to where we are. I think without a doubt. I think it's inexcusable. That the organization. Let this point Here you have a is given you sixteen years his entire career to you. He's one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time arguably the greatest statistical quarterback of all time you're on the doorstep of the super bowl and you don't communicate with him and he obviously doesn't feel wanted there and you go ahead and draft a quarterback in the first round and it appears that he had no idea that was coming. That wasn't communicated to him. I i just don't know how it's not so much. What they did is really they did it. And i think So much is how you treat people and the respect. I just don't know how that all wasn't if you knew that was potentially a place you're going and taking taking you know quarterback how that's all not ironed out with aaron prior to the decision and if it's not you potentially don't make it Here's a guy that's a multi. Mvp still playing at a crazy high level. And i think you gotta take that into account oftentimes you know the personnel guys in know looking at prospects this prospects and they're looking down the line but you also it's a it is about the people and i i. I do think you gotta gotta look at how you treat them. The messaging The the communication. I still go back to that. I mean you got to communicate you gotta be able to go talk to you guys and make sure everything was was good to go before you pull the trigger on something like that. And that's what everybody in the building. Not just aaron. I mean i think you gotta go out of your way to over communicate that and make sure everybody's on the same page when the chiefs draft to patrick mahomes. You knew in advance that was coming. Yeah absolutely that had been communicated the entire offseason leading up to that the entire offseason by multiple multiple people. Everybody in the personnel department coach. Reid constantly or multiple phone calls about that happening happened with with when we drafted cap with coach. Harbaugh i i knew i knew invent well in advance of that. What the team was thinking the route they were gonna go And i think that makes a difference it it does. I mean honestly. I i in any case had gone out of your way to obviously make let him know how you how the team feels about about how important he is Ended up. potentially they're thinking this route and and obviously explaining their thinking Clearly obviously from an outside looking in the you know that didn't that didn't happen didn't take place before we get to overdose. What are your thoughts..
"alex smith" Discussed on The Adam Schefter Podcast
"Nfl quarterback alex smith is brought to us by voice. Did i say that correctly. Alex you got it. You got it after a few times. It took me and overdoses helped you with your performance and recovery. It's a schumer company right with. What do i need to know about ruvo's before we get busy here today. Yeah it's a. it's a recovery. Footwear company and it. It's a crazy story. Hopefully we'll be able to dive into it a little bit. But it's a company that i i was. I was kinda into as far as wearing it way before my injury and then and then obviously throughout my recovery. After you know my my leg injury it was something that became integral into kind of my daily routine. And so it's It's so crazy to kinda ended up being partnered with a mountain and Pumped talking with you about it. Well thank you very much. I appreciate taking the time. We will come back to them at the end. But i do want to know now that you've announced retirement. What is next for you. Yeah you know it's it's I'm still kind of getting used to even just saying that every time i say it it still feels a little weird kind of trying it on you know Being retired in a little bit it hasn't said in you know it's it's we're still in may For me this been pretty similar to the last couple of seasons in the sense there hasn't been an off season for me The last two years so it doesn't feel that abnormal right now. You know i'm interested to see obviously come this fall. I think it's only gonna be natural That it'll it'll be weird. You know every fall. I been in the training camp for the last shoot. Almost twenty five years of my life So i i think it's to be expected that they'll be some There'll be an adjustment period but I'm kind of looking forward to what's ahead. You know i. I haven't made any decisions You know so kind of the lay of the land and tried to take as much information as i can before i make a decision. I've always thought that strange though. Because you're you're at the age of thirty seven you've done this as you mentioned since you're twelve years old and all the sudden something that's been such a major part of your life. No longer is such a major party real life and train to gear up for the season. It's a total change in perspective and attitude. And i'm wondering what kind of feedback you've gotten on that and what type of expectations you have. Now that you've begun to meet the reality of it. But i think too big things You know one of the biggest ones is. I've been i've been part of a team. That part of the team for you know twenty five twenty five years and with that the structure of the team the routine you know especially come to fall. Even even the the year to year cycle of off season in season. You know my family families lived that kind of heartbeat. You know it's all my kids have known and obviously that's coming to an end so i think they'll be adjustment there. I think the other thing is you said it. I i never expected to play sixteen years in the nfl. And for that reason. I i've put off the whole question that most you know early adults have to answers. Like what the heck do they want to do with their life. You know like. I mean football. Just lucky enough. Kept going in. And i have all these interests and curiosities and it's like when i am here i am thirty seven. I got it. Finally i got. I got to face this this puzzle Now we're most people. I think obviously a faced in their early twenties and and kind of figured it out. And i'm doing it much later in life and three kids and so Trying to juggle all that you know. I feel i feel well prepared for it as much as anybody can but again like i said just Right now just kind of gathering as much information as i can before i make any kind of decisions. Okay so gathering information gathering information about coaching gathering information about broadcasting gathering. in from like what are we. What are the options event. You can do anything you want. But what what interests you a ton of interest in football and and not football. We'd go ahead and take coaching lhasa table. At this point. I might wife. My wife would kill me. If that was pursued from the home life and really know the point of me retiring. I did seriously think about key. Plenty of keep playing had opportunities out there but for me it really was about spending time with my family and my kids are at an amazing age to go do a lot Incredibly impressionable in in. I think here in a few years all of a sudden they're going to be in high school and not wanna hang out with me as much so Definitely looking to take advantage of. You know having a flexible schedule be able to do things with with my family at this point. They've sacrificed so much for my career. over the years so a little bit. I think time to put some focus on them and so coaching definitely doesn't It's tough tough from from that perspective. So yeah i mean. I i am. I am looking into the broadcasting thing. Obviously there's different forms of that As you all know what does that. Look like obviously there's the potential opportunities opted field as well. And what are those Who am i working with. I mean i. I think that's a big thing you know. Who are you working with. I mean it's such a big part of of enjoying what you do in life I can't do nothing. I'm not just going to sit at home Twenty four seven either so just trying to find that balance that life balance Wanted to do here in this next chapter but obviously also spending time with my family. Great part is you've earned that you could afford to do whatever you want it to do. You are entitled to do whatever you wanna do. It's a great spot that you've put yourself in now during the season that you did visit jacksonville at one point how how can you come to signing with the jaguars like.
"alex smith" Discussed on The Adam Schefter Podcast
"Another episode of the adam. Schefter podcast today. We'll be joined by the former quarterback of the washington football team. Alex smith has he details. How close he came to actually playing this year upon his visit to urban meyer his former college coach in jacksonville and also breaks down the relationship between aaron rodgers and the green bay packers. Keep in mind. That alex smith was in the same draft class as aaron rodgers in fact in that draft throughout the all season most mock draft experts at aaron rodgers. Going number one to san francisco and then somewhere along the way a couple of weeks before the draft somehow switch. Alex smith slid into that first slot ahead of our rogers changing the course of history and almost taking us to where we are today with aaron rodgers in hawaii at least was recently with his fiancee. Shaving woodley and the actor miles teller but we are quickly approaching a key. Date the next key date. In the aaron rodgers stalemate with the green bay packers and that would be on june eighth wednesday june eighth because that is the day on the packers begin their three day mandatory minicamp. And i would say right now. We should not expect that rogers to be at that. Three day mandatory minicamp and if and when he's not there as i would expect the debt point in time the green bay packers will have the option of finding him ninety three thousand and eight five dollars for missing old three days of the mandatory minicamp at breaks down like this fifteen thousand five hundred and fifteen dollars for missing the first day. Thirty one thousand thirty dollars for missing the second day and forty six thousand five hundred and forty dollars for missing the third day grand total of just over ninety three thousand dollars in. It's not the money that matters to enter rogers in this particular case. It's more the principal. And i think it would. Further inflame the relationship between the two sides if the packers went ahead and find him for missing those days of mandatory minicamp which is why not only do i expect aaron rodgers to miss the mandatory minicamp. But i will not be surprised if the green bay packers in advance. Proactively say that they are excusing. Aaron rodgers from the three day mini camp. That is the situation that would make the most sense now. I don't know if they ultimately wilder that but again that's my prediction in advance is that the packers will wind up excusing him. Therefore avoiding the confrontation and further. Inflaming that situation while giving aaron rodgers. More time with the hope that eventually he'll decide to come back to green bay. But that is the next aaron rodgers date on the time line here with the green bay packers meanwhile we continue to wait for julio jones to be traded and we are expecting that to happen any day now in fact i would think it happens this week and again. There's not a ton of interest in paying the falcons what they want. Everybody agrees the guy is a future hall of fame. Receiver still wanna top. What the game today. Thirty two years old dozen practice a lot. Is that ankle injuries. All sorts of nagging lingering pains in all sorts of lingering pains throughout his body but again there's been some interest but not as much as you might think certainly not at what the falcons are requesting in return so we will see where julio winds up going to me the tennessee titans do make the most sense not saying that will get it done but they lost corey davis lost jonnu smith. They have a whole arthur smith. The falcons head coach came from tennessee. It would be out of conference. That the falcons will be trading if they decided to send him to the titans school. You'll be in alabama guy joining derrick henry and other alabama guy. Give me the titans of formidable combo there in tennessee. So we'll see how the julio jones saga shakes out this week. But i do think he'll wind up. Being traded from the atlanta falcons and of course last week we had the re and of course last week we had the announced retirement of the former colts. Kicker adam terry who in my mind is the single greatest kicker in nfl history and we'll be first ballot future pro. Football hall of famer guy is off the charts and really if you just look at the numbers and what he's done. The numbers speak to his place in history. He scored more points. Two thousand six hundred and ninety three than any player in nfl history. Think about that more than anyone. The idea of the game is scoring in the skyscraper. More than anybody kicked moorefield those five hundred ninety nine then you player district tech. Two more field goals any player in history. Seven hundred fifteen made the most field goals in nfl postseason history fifty six the most postseason points two hundred and thirty eight. Nobody scored more in the regular season. Nobody's scored more in the postseason. And the we think about the biggest kicks in the history of the game. Adam viteri made them. He made them made a game winning. Kick to beat. The rams in the super bowl really launched the patriots dynasty with the single greatest field goal. That i've ever seen in the snow. Against the raiders to help beat oakland at that time and help propel the patriots onto what would become their first super bowl title in the start of the dynasty out of atari made. That happened was an unbelievable kicker. Did it in new england. Did it in indianapolis remember the shock when he left new england like you didn't players the promise of their career leave with adam. Budgetary did but he moved on.

Thank you for helping me believe in myself and in the impossible and Wow, folks, Alex Smith for the first time, because even though I've got plenty of snaps left in me after 16 years of giving this game, everything I've got, I can't wait to see what else is possible. NFL sets salary cap at $182.5 million, down 8% from 2020
"The nfl just a few hours ago. Set the salary cap number for the upcoming season. It'll be one hundred and eighty two and a half million dollars. Obviously down from where it was at one ninety eight All pandemic related. Keep in mind that no team will actually have a one hundred and eighty two point. Five million dollar cap number because they're cap carryovers With with various earned and under earned incentives from the year before So there's an adjusted cap number. Washington's number ultimately according to multiple spots is essentially after the sheriff. Deal heading into free agency. In with the alex smith reduction Or cap savings is going to be thirty. Eight point nine million dollars in cap space. That's number six that sixth in the league available cap space.
Lawsuit: Paraplegic inmate at St. Louis jail denied shower for five months
"And because he groups suing in ST Louis, saying of one prisoner hasn't showered in month due to a disability. The jail is ignoring a new lawsuit claims of paraplegic inmate at the ST Louis City Justice Center. Has not showered or otherwise bathed in five months due to the facility, not being equipped for persons in wheelchairs. For allegedly firing a gun in the car with a child inside of Evan Brown. Fox News Washington coach Ron Rivera speaking today for the first time since the team cut quarterback Alex Smith, and I don't disagree with a lot of things that, he said. I really don't Rivera admits he didn't want to give Smith a chance to come back last year from his gruesome leg injury. As Smith alleged in a GQ interview last month. It was always in the back of my head. What if he gets hurt again if he hurts that leg at that specific leg again? Don't be the guy that put it back on the field of alone, get hurry, Rivera told reporters. Smith asked for his release. And he agreed, saying it was best for the team to play again and he'll do a great job. John
Has Washington Made a Mistake Dropping Alex Smith?
"For me. Alex smith if you're loading up to try and win the super bowl and the next two years because you've got stafford for these at least two years. I would think that having an experienced. Backup quarterback like alex smith on your roster that would be. That'd be a nice luxury to have. Yeah no for sure. I mean despite worries about being in the same time ever stand those worries. I seen those production meetings with alex smith. He's hot i got it. Yeah yeah he's he's a handsome fellow So lies so. I i'm with you right. I mean if god forbid something were to happen. Stafford's someone capable as him. Yeah a backup quarterback and we've seen a lot more injuries at the quarterback position over the last five to seven years. I i do think it's really important position to have. So i'd or if we're gonna talk football greg then i'll just simply say then since they wanna be boring i'll simply say that that you know I think alex smith is actually still a starter. And i'm not quite sure you will want to be a backup. Because they went five and one with them and that team was trashed. Let me give you the flip side. You ready for this. Which is let's say. Matthew stafford has a couple of bad games. It won't take long for everybody to go. Hey you got alex smith. He had a great career. Give him a shot. I've never heard of crowd. Beg for alex smith before my life. It hasn't happened to him. He's had that he had a really crazy career. You know when he was in san francisco and every year they were changing coaches or coordinators. He had this one game. I'll tell you guys were a divisional. Round game against new orleans. And he ran a bootleg for a touchdown. It took to overtime. And then he threw a touchdown. Pass vernon davis in the this old candlestick community thought. Alex smith was on his way at that point and he's just caught bad luck. It seems throughout his whole career but he's had a great career because he's a winner everywhere he goes. Now he's like the most inspirational guy on the planet. Yeah it really is inspiration for sure what he went through his wild for. It's crazy that he's sixty when i saw it.

Where does shawn watson might be available. Dak prescott might be available. Russell wilson might be available louis. How interested do you think teams will be alex smith as he becomes available now. I think alex is a tremendous mentor. I think alex would be a tremendous bridge quarterback at this point in time these people are going to really try and connect the dots between him in chicago given his familiarity with matt nagy and that system that they run in chicago like it was in kansas city. I don't think that's a that's the option that they're looking for but look. I have nothing but infinite. Respect for alex smith at any team would be better served having him in their in their quarterback room for sure.

Dallas Cowboys fire defensive coordinator Mike Nolan and defensive line coach Jim Tomsula
"Do have some breaking news on friday afternoon. The first friday after the dallas cowboys season ended an unfortunate start the new year for their staff. That dallas cowboys. Making some you know some obvious news in a bit of surprise news the dallas cowboys announcing that defensive coordinator. Mike nolan defensive. Line coach jim. Tom soula have been let go. Have been whatever you wanna call it fire to buy the team. They will not be back in two thousand and twenty one. Mike nolan obviously oversaw. One of the worst defenses to ever live ever played in the nfl. And so we'd heard. Rumblings obviously had been reported different instances over kind of the last month that it was likely he was not going to be back although mike nolan. If you're somehow unaware is is rather chummy with mike mccarthy dallas cowboys head coach mike mccarthy they go way back in case. You forgot mike. Nolan was the head coach of the san francisco. Forty niners in two thousand and five and mike mccarthy offensive corner at the time that was of course the year. The forty niners took alex smith with a number one overall pick. Ironically the quarterback that won the division that they were together here. This season with the dallas cowboys. Jim thome soula was a head coach of the forty niners at one point in time himself albeit for only a year obviously following in the footsteps of jim harbaugh who got an extension today of all days again with the university of michigan so lots of symmetry going on here and so. Yeah i mean my canola thing. I think everybody saw coming a mile away. The jim thome solo thing is a bit of a surprise austin on youtube. Says i thought it said mccarthy and was like whoa still good to get rid of nolan and this is how every cowboys fan feels. And let's be frank. Let's be honest. We don't enjoy talking about people losing their jobs. People getting fired or things like that but this defense was among the worst again in the history of this game. The dallas cowboys last week. With their season on the line against an offense that had been anemic for most of the season the new york giants that was incidentally again. You talk about all. The irony here led by former dallas cowboys head coach jason garrett in the giants offensive coordinator who again to go kind of crazy circle reportedly had an interview today on friday with the los angeles chargers for their head coaching vacancy. But the cowboys new york with their season on the line and they got run over. I mean the new york giants before last week against the cowboys. The previous four games. The giants had not scored more than three points in a single first half in each of the four games. The giants played before the cowboys. They went into the locker room at halftime with no more than three points. They put twenty up in the first half against the cowboys. And that was kind of what the season was for the cowboys right. This never ending display of imperfection this never ending run of records getting broken records getting set and i just you know this was inevitable. I mean shutout. Of course to the all encompassing thanos. I mean this truly was inevitable. Reality a lotta people myself. Included wondered what took so long this week. It's a pair at the mike mccarthy and his staff overall were evaluating things doing kind of the final walk throughs and assessments in whatever time just came for them to move

They have antonio gibson back is huge. Smith did practice on thursday so it's trending towards him play now. He wasn't playing as well. His last few starts that we saw him out there even before the calf injury as he was when he first came into the lineup. But at least it makes it a great story on sunday night like this is the game they had to show because it was the one that made sense that there won't be any teams eliminated and he see alex smith finesse. Now it's i'm with you greg. It's it's like. We were ready to give alex smith comeback player of the year. If he came in and did a kneel down. I mean just to even come back and be in uniform on the fact that the coaching staff so clearly said all along this the guy we trust. I think that he can do a lot priests snap that. You're not going to get from the other quarterbacks on that roster this needs to be about washington's rookie class though to chase young antonio gibson these guys are key to this team and it's incredibly. These teams met in back in week one. When i thought philly could be a super bowl team their quarterback of the future carson wentz is nowhere to be seen right now and philadelphia and washington washington. Chance to win the nfc.
