But he did say was like for marketing to play which I would not put that passed Kurt knowing what we know about curt now, but I do believe he had like actual surgery. Yeah. No one better than Andy Pettitte and marina Rivera in my lifetime. As as an athlete. Bernie Williams was another fantastic one. Derek had a very slow heartbeat. Did you get that though? Because you, you know, the narrative was Iraq can't get in done in the big moment. He's on he's not clutch. And then you become two thousand nine hit big hit after big hit. I think you you look honestly, I don't think you can drive in two thousand runs in the major leagues and not have a clutch gene renter. But I think he's another humble brag. But I do think that in New York that year in two thousand nine the big press conference, the spring training about you know, the whole. Crazy stuff the suspension about PD's and all that stuff that and then I had a major hip surgery, which all I knew was hip surgery was synonymous with Jackson, and that's the crap out of me. So when I came back from Colorado, and we had this great team in the new stadium. I felt like I was playing with the houses money and literally felt no pressure went out and had fun. I remember driving from my upper east side apartment Upper West side apartment at the time and driving through Washington heights in the Bronx. And I remember postseason saying if I can just do one thing in today's game to help us win. I'll be very happy. And that thought process really helped me streamline my thoughts. Did you notice any difference between kind of how your teammates reacted to you? Once you started getting those big hits like especially in the postseason as opposed to before was there was a change in that locker room. They're certainly just a lot of good energy. Right. And I think people just appreciate it. There's nothing that bonds you in life more than winning a championship together. Specially in New York. And it's funny. We were up three zero against Red Sox and the AFC in two thousand and four, and I always I think that really got those things for a reason. Right. And and it was a blessing in disguise because growing up watching Dan Marino in Miami. And really admire people like Charles Barkley people who. The best of the best. But just came a little bit short. And it was interesting before two thousand nine I'm a charity event. And I end up spending some time with John Elway. And John Elway says to me Hanoi exactly going through fourteen years into the big leagues now, and we have not one and I have not done. Well, at least as a Yankee in the postseason had good moment. And then I had not so good moments. And he says listen I play twenty years nineteenth and twentieth. Won a championship both ears and everything's forgotten. All you need is one. Yeah..

"And then we started talking back and forth a little bit bubble, blah before you know, it two weeks later, there's a big press conference inky ring. Oh, and so I think one of the most I mean, obviously the two thousand nine season where you win the World Series. And you're the most clutch guy on the team is your defining Yankee moment, but I always think of Iran jeeter. And they're like how you guys coexisted. How would you describe your relationship with their jeeter? When you were Yankee both at the start and the finish. Yeah. I thought look first of all going back I met jeeter for the first time when I was sixteen. At the university of Miami baseball game when he was down there for four Lauderdale prior to being Tampa for spring training. And he was playing I believe low able and Michigan the school that he signed to school with was playing Miami the school that I had just signed junior in high school, and we sat down together for two hours and kind of just fell in love with the idea of what we were doing in the game. And how we wanted to just come in and be young players and do really well and. So that was kind of the start of it and from then from all the time from sixteen probably about, you know, twenty twenty three twenty four we were all very close. Then I came to New York in two thousand and four, and you know, the move obviously complicated because I moved to their base. And it was kind of shocking thing it was a lot you're better shortstop than him. No. I'm not gonna say that. And then you know, I thought the relationship like any brotherhood had some ups and downs. And but overall, I think nine we kind of cemented our legacy together as Yankees, and I just thought it was it was very respectful relationship. Do do you ever get into a fight with them where you guys were screaming at each other? I don't think either one of other screaming, right? I would assume jeeter is not. But. Like, I was because it's it must be hard being the highest paid player in baseball. This four times four time MVP not to brag. And then coming to the Yankees. It's like that's jeeter's team. Yeah. So you have to now we always talk about it in the NBA. Like, you know, there's only one ball. Do you feel that pressure? Like, I have to basically be his, Robin. Even though I might be a better Batman than him. No. I mean, look, I think a few things number one. I try to give away tens of millions of dollars to go to Boston. And then I made small concessions, but I made in some ways larger concessions succumb to New York. So I've always been a team guy. And I just lead my actions lead not by telling you by showing you look I can play point guard, but I can go play forward. And I'm a quarterback and go to whatever I just want to be part of a great organization with a great culture. And I was just in all of the Yankee. They're mystery the mystique plane for George Steinbrenner who recruited me to play here. It was more about the Yankee like or being a part of special, and I felt like all of us. I think the three of us are the kind of people that would make that move to to be part of the so great. So you get to New York. I noticed that. When you got there, you very quickly adopted the Red Sox Yankees rivalry like you took it to heart almost immediately. When you got what was that about where you're trying to like show your teammates? Hey, I know I was close to you know to signing with this team. But now, I'm with you guys. You know, we're we're in the same bunker together. Or was there like one incident in particular against the Red Sox that made you flip that switch like, okay? Fuck Boston, the emotions were so high, and it was such an almost get and I mean get for me being becoming Red Sox. And for the Red Sox to acquire me. It was like this. All this foreplay, all this teasing others like he can taste it. You can feel your edging. They already had you know, jerseys of me, and I can feel it..

"And I got paid a lot of money on my skill. That's the most ingenuous disingenuous to be like, I want double Kevin Garnett off. I believe you just said that early right, quote, unquote. Nothing to do with really anything. But I always liked the sunglasses. You are in Texas. Yeah. The wrap around they were really they were cool. What a memory. We bring us back. Cool hobby by is kind of where similar kind of like a little different color feel to it. And how anybody's got a lot of sweat. Yes. I call them. The drip got. So you're in Texas. Do you ever hang out Jerry Jones? Do you ever go on his bunk? Like his bus or box is bus on the on the Cowboys. No, I didn't go the in the bus. But I went on the box a bucks pretty cool fancy. Like how you expect for the Cowboys way? Jerry's one of the smartest people ever met. He's talked about a forward thinker and a guy that can see around corners and a guy that has just the biggest set of balls that I've ever seen. I mean, the guys just I love him. I admire him and what he's done for the NFL and for that franchises been phenomenal. Yeah. I mean, it's one of those guys as a polarizing figure kit, you can't say that he's not like a four thinker. He bought the Cowboys and made them what they are number one science is in the world five billion. Yes, crazy. All right. Let's let's Jason Gert eight years before he became good. Yeah. True. True. Yeah. He saw that coming. This is good though, because I like going going chronologically so you end up at the eighties. But before that happens you almost and at the Red Sox, and you you were telling me this. I think you've said this before but you had a deal like completely signed ready to go. Did you not I did? And that deal was signed by myself and John Henry and by the Commissioner at the time, and we need one more signature you need forcing was mine. John Henry on of the Red Sox the players union and the ownersh which is the Commissioner's office we missed one which is done fear. Who was our great long-term learnt longtime head of the union. And here's the irony of helping I was trying to give away tens of millions of dollars and the union the not let me they didn't allow me because I was representing one of seven hundred and fifty players, and I thought that was fair, and they want to set the precedent and say well of Alex gives them forty million dollars. Then you know, if t- will and Dan will. And then, you know, Ken Griffey will I hope to get to the point where I can give them forty million dollars. But yeah, try. Today. Let me so. What do you think the like your walk us through what your career would have looked like if you had gone to the Red Sox? Do you think about that? Good question. Yeah. I thought about that for a long time. It would have been different. I think looking back the greatest thing that's ever happened to me professional was becoming a Yankee and so much. So that double down when I was a free agent again, and it came back to New York. But as the rest would have been, you know, I'm sure it would have been great and just a much different vibe for sure what was it about Boston that made you wanna go there initially? I thought the rivalry of Yanni's Red Sox, which ripe three was a year that they almost beat the Red Sox. They couldn't they lost that crazy game seven when Aaron Boone walks off an extra innings of, you know, Wakefield and. I would just like one step short..

"I believe that you sit in the room into Goshi, it it. But I do believe you're like, you get you told your age like, hey, get an exactly exactly you can tell us how credit for that. I wish I wish Dan did. I did I feel it right away. Yeah. I felt. I felt it was a huge move. I probably don't realize how big it was unto maybe years after but twenty four years old. I mean, you not expecting just like you wouldn't expect to get demoted five times in one year. Nineteen euros not expecting to get that type of contract that's five. And it's interesting because you know, I always think I'm always on the players side when it comes these contracts because what happens is a guy signs huge contract. And if he doesn't produce right away. Now, you obviously produced huge huge numbers for Texas. But if he doesn't produce right away, everyone then blames the player, it's like, well, he should get paid whatever anyone's gonna pay him. It's not it's not the player's fault that the management and the ownership paid him too much. So would you ever like did you ever feel like people almost kind of like, hey, rod what the hell? You don't deserve this type of money, even though you were producing in Saint levels. Yeah. I mean, I think look I think a lot of opinions came from everywhere I've been a lightning rod ever since. I wasn't a lightning. Rod seattle. Ironically, because I was kinda hit an a in the north west and be behind Griffey junior, and I wasn't making the big salary at so in many ways, I was kind of David Goliath, right? The minute. I went to Texas. I became go. I did you feel the lightning. Rod people hate you now. Oh, yeah. I mean hates a strong word. But yeah, maybe hate. I think I think people probably the hate you in earlier. Sports hate because I think we love sports so much, but you realize when you take a step back that is still a sport. And and you know, you have not committed a crime. You haven't done things, you just you know, you're capitalizing on. You know, true capitalism is a system that is rich people don't understand that. When I first entered the league in nineteen ninety four the industry was billion dollars today is hovering around ten billion. And man for it already said he wants to take it to fifteen. So the is nece as a whole is extremely healthy. Yeah. So you get to Texas. Do you start reading your newspaper clippings like immediately? Like you start reading the hate that comes at you like bak- was talking like the second. You get there. If you don't perform up to expectations immediately. You know, you have a bad day. Somebody's gonna write a call them about you saying you don't deserve the contracts you start reading those clippings immediately. You know? No, not really because. You know to dance point earlier if it was today, you had no choice because be everywhere. I mean, you've even bartered with tweet and Instagram, and there was ways where if you wanted to kind of stay out of that lane. You can kind of stay into dark and not. We local newspapers. And if if the folks at night one running that in the news than you can pretty much escape that would you you can do that today. Because I always think it's bullshit when someone's went athletes like, I don't listen to anything. I think there's I think there are athletes that are good at tuning it out. But you're telling me like you can't you walk by TV in your on the headline or you turn on the car. And you're someone's blabbing on performance wise. There's not really much critique. Yeah, that's true. So I think they're they're critique. PF PFC came around my decision to go there. There's some people thought it was disingenuous. Right. Some people said that will do really wanna win. Why would you go there? But I had my answer should seems like, you know, I think that's probably where because baseball such weird sport that you can be the best player in the game and your team can come suck. Yeah. And that's kinda wag Nick pretty good. They gave it to be pretty good. But it was never about performance. I actually don't think that that's disingenuous to just be like I wanted to get paid shitload of money..

"So you get out there. That's actually that mid-nineties too late nineties. Mariners Rosser is one of the best rosters that. I think has ever been assembled. Would you put it right up there with some of the Yankees teams that you played on? I certainly, you know, the sad thing is is that you found out very quickly the difference between good and great is very small, and it's just sometimes an extra pitcher, right? And the one thing that never changes. You know, you lead with great pitching you win with great bitch. And you saw with the cubs. You saw would the Red Sox deceiver? Yeah. It was it was a shame. I, you know, that's great. I think that's one of the best teams never won. Yeah. I mean, the us rattle off the names. I mean, Martinez j buehner I was so scared Jabe dinner. Yeah. His look. He's a scary goatee very seldom the team that. You have the best pitcher in the game. And Randy Johnson the best player in the game and can Griffey junior the best pure hitter in the game in Martinez and the scariest baddest motherfucker Jabe unit who is the locker room guy who was like the glue guy on that team. So there's a few. So I would always say joy choral, Alex up brother who graduated from Vanderbilt and just a tremendous guy. Kind of a navy seal game started at seven pm. He would arrive at ten AM, and I said holy shit. I mean, this is like another level. And for me seeing that as a guy who was like five six and was limited in his ability. But had the heart of like Braveheart, right? And I remember saying to myself when I was nineteen when I eighteen when I first came up I said if I can take my. God-given ability and emulate, everything Ajoy Korda's. God, I gotta hang around for a while. And that was just a great example. Great mentor to me, he was tough. He was nasty and I loved every part of it. But he would not let you get away with inch. Yeah. And that's what I wish young players had a little bit more today. I like mentors did did. Sweet Lou ever get really mad at you. All the time all the time. I got demoted five times in one year we use that that was on ninety five. Yeah. And it was a strike year. Ninety four was strike in the following year. Demoted five times gotta be record. But to answer your question. PF T one of the things that at some point. I'm like, I'm nineteen. I got demoted five times. Should I be fucking playing quarterback at U N Y, am I doing this? The last time I missed the the motive for times it was now late in the year. And I think I make an errand shrink out a couple of times. And we lose we had a really tiny office in Seattle kingdom. So right when you come out of. The dugout you come in. And you have this long clubhouse. But right when you come in you go let you go to and you'll go to right? The first lockers can give a junior. Well, I went into office. He was probably the second or third cigarette. Coach says, hey skipper wants to see you. I know that why know how that feels so go here comes and I walk in the room a barely see him. There was smoke everywhere. And he was you know, just having a little cocktail. And he said, Alex in shirt was open kind of fell. He was out a little bit. And he's Alica. I'm sorry. You know, I'm sending you down. And I finally broke down. I said man is how can you send me down for the fifth time? This can't be part of the development process. The sucks. I remember driving down on I five Tacoma to AAA were AAA was about forty five minutes, south of Seattle. And I said this is the time where you think about a second plan. Right. I still have my eligibility to the university of Miami to go. Quarterback. And I called my mother, and I said mom coming home. I'm going to move back into house still live at home like most nineteen year olds. And I said I'm going to give you know football shot..

"If fear was a big factor for sure. I thought it was a coolest thing up in Miami to be a quarterback at the university of Miami. And play shortstop remember that we did not have major baseball team going up at Miami Marlins came late and university of mine wasn't like arguing keys. It was Dan like your cubs. And the fact that that rich tradition that Jimmy Johnson broad from the eighties of football. And it would have been awesome to play quarterback. So what made you decide not to just like, I mean, obviously, you were money superstar. He's really money. Yeah. Yeah. Do the bail is eight. I mean, I was seventeen I was broke as broke as you can be. A mother walk walk work two jobs for forever that it was normal that all moms single MAs will work to three jobs that those par for the course, of course, learn to wasn't. But I just wanted to make sure she was retired. And I needed to kind of get my career in the way. Plus when you one one meaning first round first pick of really alpha way to say. Yeah. One where? I mean, there's nowhere to go. But down. Yeah. Well, you so I take it. Then you didn't get to the conversation that all Miami recruits. Get to his how much are you gonna pay money? Can't be the deciding factor if you're gonna go play for the Miami hurricanes. Right. I sit on the board of the university of Miami. So okay, certainly conversation was up. Yes. But I am a huge Kane. Kane fan whose favorite player growing up like watching those Schnellenberger as a coach knows a little bit before my time. So my guys test Verdy Ericsson, Michael Irving Jerome Brown. You know? The you. You. So you you, obviously go you go one one you go to Seattle and. How's it? Like, I always wonder this with an athlete who is goes from basically high school to you are now a superstar like LeBron James or someone who goes directly from high school to like deck speculations are enormous on you. Did it change overnight? Where you did you go from all, right? I'm just regular guy to OSHA. I'm not a regular guy anymore. I mean, yes. And no, I mean, the fact that I went to a market like Seattle in the Pacific northwest. It kinda gave me this like covering and not only was I at the kingdom. But also had this kind of cover of being a behind the greatest player in the world at a time with Ken Griffey junior. He was or Michael Jordan. He Nike campaigns Gatorade. And what was interesting was. He was six year my senior. So it was nice because I was able to learn from him. And he was always the best player on the team in the big star. So I never came in as you mentioned LeBron James or even a Kobe Bryant Kobe a little because he had shacks. It's probably more Kobe. But it was fun. I enjoyed it had unbelievable mentors. Great manager. It was in a in a strange way like going to an amazing university and getting your PHD or your masters from people that Panella egg Martinez, Ken Griffey junior as to business guys. Michigan seven oh. And it is career while state. That's pretty that's a bad ass move to be able to retire and be like seven and against my rival the hot seat, the loser of this Brian Kelly now, I don't think that or Myers gonna coach Notre Dame. But you better believe that if next year Notre Dame doesn't play well the entire year there will be a ton of urban Meyer. He'd just lurking. He's basically if you are a premier program now you have urban Meyer lurking. Over your shoulder being like urban Meyer. He's out there. He casts a long shadow to he's taking a long nap. He's his heads his heads cleared up. He's the health problems. No more slash Zac Smith Smith Cantera three game winning streak. He's probably feeling pretty spry about now. Yeah. Brian kelly. Actually, did the best thing that he could possibly do this year, which is going to feed it. Yes. Because if he had lost four or five games immediate. Yeah. Urban would just be installed already have changed the name on the door. They're so urban Meyer retired for now for now he is breath. Camis habitual retire is third time. That are retired people forget he retired in two thousand nine for day after Nick Sabin whoop. That ass that's very many came back. And then he retired again in two thousand ten then he retired again yesterday. He's going to have to have a new contract cause remember last time he had contracts Gramley now, and he's got great. So he has to write a contract to the grave. He should just write a contract to himself. Yes. Be like, hey, listen urban. You're gonna you're gonna be fine. You're going to focus on football until. Something comes up where it's clear that you should have been more involved. Even though you're involved in everything and you're the head coach and in the most powerful guy on campus out my head. So is he gonna retire after the Rose Bowl? Yes. The Rose Bowl will be a guy Ganda Meyer Victor victory any he might forget that he retired. Actually, he might just come back next. Yeah. Again, like throw out the all the stuff that we could get into. But this is not that type of show. We're having fun here. Urban Meyer monster of a head coach. He does deserve the accolades on the coaching. Maybe not the developing of young men that some end up in jail and whatnot and coaches, we're not doing we're not getting not doing that. I didn't do it. Did I I didn't do it want. Now, don't talk about the cover-ups Aaron Hernandez. None of none of it urban Meyer. Good job, solid, man. Yes issue, so solid, man. He's probably pretty pissed off. That teams aren't allowed to have Papa John's all the time like they used to that that news probably hit him hard. Yes. Absolutely. It hit them. Just as hard as Maryland. Touchdown. Yes. Yeah. All right. So let's move on from urban Meyer. We have Mark Sanchez the return Sanchis. Yeah. Are you excited? Well, I'll put it this way. I was very excited actually getting to the game sucks would happen to Colt McCoy broke his leg. Well, true passes, really broke his fibula. So I mean, come on. It's the small bone. Yeah. I love you guys pointing to you. I love Bubba in the studio. Yeah. In and hang hang. It's going to suck. Without you, buddy. We'll find a way we'll find someone else has been doing justify job. Whenever you go on vacation. Let's speak. It's almost time to. Thank you. Hey, speaking of resigned shorts urban Meyer has retired from football. He will temporarily. He will what do you say? He he will basically no probably not coach again, he's pretty much for talking to us the parlance of LeBron James s so he has famous alumni from Ohio. He's he went to he is announced his retirement today. And how how should we attack this in a graceful manner and not say that he's retiring because of scandals that have come up in the last year and maybe at handshake deal being don't fire me. I'll just retire at the end of the year and say, it's a work on my way to do it. Okay. We'll just call future US head coach urban Meyer. Yeah. So he's gonna coach absolutely. You told me earlier he is fifty four years old fifty four if you saw his a brief stint at ESPN he had zero interest being on television. He just did that because you know, he'd to buy time find the right place to land. It's like a rape think he wasn't afraid of Nick Sabin. That's not why left he really was passionate about television. But it turns out he treats everyone in the media the exact same way while he's working with them as he did when he was working against them coach. So yeah, I don't know. I don't know what his immediate plans are. But it is. It's pretty obvious that he's not I want him to go to USC urban Meyer. Now, he's had a lot of things. Let's call them things. It is programs win it all cost approach. Let's say it that way. That's a nice way. You can say he is a monster of a head coach. He wanted pulling green. He wanted Utah. He wanted Florida. He wanted to how state wherever he goes. He will win. I think it'd be great for college football. If urban Meyer went to USC one they're covered. Some crimes. No, no, no covered up some crabs on his coaching staff. And in his note, not going to say that. And you know, what maybe the air out there. Maybe everything will will make them feel better and those those headaches that go away when he wins. They will go away permanently because win at USC, maybe maybe the smog over the city of Los Angeles. We'll just blend in perfectly with.

"Here and now has just jeopardises reputation so you wonder well why would someone like that do this and of course we know that alex rodriguez did the berry buds at this and these were already on the shortlist of the best players in baseball history so there's really no predicting now the thing you can say with canot is that we don't know when he started taking things we don't even know what he took we don't know what the effect of it was and if you want to take the most pessimistic or negative interpretation of this you can say well this is probably not an isolated event there was a report that he was ten generally linked to biogenesis back in two thousand thirteen it was like someone who was associated with his foundation received shipment and they never pinned anything on him but now in light of this news may be you attach some greater weight to that there is a writer reporter who tweeted that canot was about to be suspended back in two thousand twelve and then apologized for that tweet at never actually happened but now you wonder well i wonder whether he knew something was that based on actual information so you could come up with a story where robinson kono's whole career is pd fueled and of course he wasn't the top prospect and he suddenly burst onto the scene and maybe his whole career was made possible by the substances and he's taken them the whole time and wounding detection until now it's not impossible there's no way to prove that i think it's unlikely i think robinson co is really good at baseball and would have been really good at baseball without taking anything but at the same time i can't condemn anyone who says i won't vote for him because this is a little different from the wild west days before baseball was actually enforcing anything canot do the risks and he did what he did anyway so if someone decides not to vote for him i understand that position i haven't decided what i will do because.
