You're going to have to outbid these other teams when it comes to prospects by a lot. And I'm not saying Colorado in Vegas can't do it. But the only way they can do it. As if Anaheim Columbus L. A. They just don't come forward with even their second best offer. Because I think Colorado and Vegas is best offer is about as good as Anaheim in Ella's third. If Come to a Maxine come twice in the third overall pick and one of their other middling prospects, and Adam Henrique is a cap dump if that's their offer. Then Oh, suddenly Hello, Vegas with Peyton crabs. And Cody Glass. And the 30th pick. Like, all right, you're in the running. Hello, Colorado with Alex. New Hook in the 28th pick like you're in the running, but and that really those teams I would hope are in the Eichel sweepstakes. That they are aggressive in the Eichel sweepstakes. They have all the more reason to be in it, then the Anaheim's and the Ellas. Those teams have to convince themselves that they actually can be a contender. And I think they're nuts if they think they convinced themselves that they're going to be a contender. Colorado in Vegas don't have to convince themselves of anything. They are both elite teams. They are one and two and Stanley Cup odds for next year but online dot egg has. The Avalanche is the favorite for next season to win the Stanley Cup, and they have the Golden Knights at number two. But when you have Two teams. That have fallen short of getting to the finals in recent memory. The Golden Knights have lost in the conference finals. Vegas still thinks there one piece away. There's only one other place they can turn. And it's that franchise number one center in the only guy they can even conceivably get their hands on this offseason that fits that description. It's Jack Eichel. And what you need in Colorado. A lot of those same vibes fit they've lost in the second round two years in a row. Nathan MacKinnon. Showed frustration and his post game press conference after they lost to Vegas in the second round. They are reportedly getting into it. With Gabriel Landeskog and contract negotiations. They are far apart. Landeskog has been there, captain. He was the youngest captain in NHL. I think when he became any might still be He Has been a very good player for a long time for them. But the Avalanche Not just giving one of their guys Landeskog, whatever he wants might be an indication that they're not satisfied. That They might think they need an upgrade from a guy like Landeskog in their top six as their second best or third. Best forward, I should say after McKinnon Rantanen And what you need is you need Vegas. You need Colorado to show that ultra aggression and maybe because the to compete with each other in the same division and compete with each other last year in the playoffs that they might be trying to outbid the other. Colorado is not going to want Vegas to get Jack Eichel. No way because then they're going to shoot to the top as the Stanley Cup favorites, and Vegas likewise is not going to want to see Colorado get Jack Eichel because then the separation, the potential gap between those two suddenly swings in the avalanche favor. What you need. Is those two bidding against each other, Not even for one of them To ultimately get Eichel would be nice. I'd be okay with Vegas's best offer right now, and I would be, I think okay with Colorado's best offer. Peyton Crabs, Cody Glass offer that involves a couple of firsts or new hook in a couple of first. I don't know much more about the other avalanche prospects Been a while since I looked at them, But new Hook is really I think the guy there Those are all right. Those are all right. But if they the Sabres could weaponize Colorado in Vegas to get Anaheim in L A to give you their best offer. That's where you want to end up. "Are comfortable exposing in the draft, You know, maybe a guy that does have a bigger cap hit but can still help contribute if Seattle take some, whatever. If you don't and you get the guy you'd let them play out his contract here one or two years or whatever it is and move on. And then the assets that you're getting in like the younger assets for the first round pick. Obviously, the first round pick doesn't matter. But you know you're younger assets, your prospects that are coming in. You don't have to worry about protecting them in in the expansion draft, they're ineligible to be picked or whatever. So that's also something else. The factor in the situation, but it's it's It's why it makes it so interesting heading into these next couple of weeks here because Are we going to see a Jack Eichel trade for purposes of, you know, moving on from him and then allowing yourself to protect other younger assets? I don't think that's necessarily what the mindset is. Because you still have to get the best value you can for Jack Eichel trade, But it just is another wrench to throw into the whole scenario in the situation. So I wonder where Granado comes into this because Granado impressed a lot of people because he seemed to understand how and where players should be used on the ice. More so than a lot of people who had been in that organization previously going back a long time. So Granado having a sense of like we're going to play on her at center. We're going to give these guys minutes those guys when it's and seeing all those boats rise, right? If he and Adams are talking You would expect Granado to kind of impart that kind of viewpoint of like this is these are the guys who were going to be using these. This is their best utilization. These are the guys who are maybe expendable because their usage does not fit into the thing that we're trying to do. If they can do the one thing they have not been able to do for 15 years, which is to correctly identify the talent they have and play it correctly. And if that changes with Granado You need to move the guys who have still have the advantage of like convincing. The leagues are good. If the reason people say Will Borgen was available in the expansion draft is because their assumption is what you have to protect, crystalline in good their marks. You can calm them and if their national reporters, they sound like the dudes, they talked to who all work in the other front offices. So it's plausible. You can find a front office dumb enough to take grass, mistrust the line in and give you something back. It should be an easy trade to make. He's affordable. He wants to go. "He would kind of you would kind of fill in what they need. We're with Justin Emerson Las Vegas Sun he covers the Golden Knights will get to the prospects what might be coming back in a potential trade in a moment, But you mentioned some of those big acquisitions. And with that came big contracts. Now Michael carries a big contract. Five years $10 million cap number. How is Vegas positioned in terms of the cap? Would they have to make other moves to make his contract fit in? They would They have about $6 million in cap space going into the next top, Even with most or this offseason, With most of the team coming back, they're going to need to figure out a new deal for Alec Martinez decide if he's going to come back to their blue line or not, but other matters. But here's Danmark Thomas not sick, and that's it for their free agent, So their team is pretty sad, but $6 million, even if they don't sign Alec Martinez and isn't enough for Jack Eichel cabinet so they would have to make some other moves elsewhere. And and they they've always shown that they're willing to do that. Last year, They traded away post as me and made Schmidt basically in encapsulated moves they had room. Sign Alex Pietrangelo this year they could, they could make the moves elsewhere. You could look at Riley Smith is on an expiring deal. $5 million left on his contract. He can move Alex Tuck, who I would imagine would probably be part of a Jack Eichel crate. I guess we'll get to that in a second makes close to $5 million, so that frees up space. And if you really want to do the big thing last adopted and they tried to trademark Andre Fleury, and they couldn't get any takers, so If you're looking at that he just won the best not, but that's $7 million with Robin Leonard waiting to go If you wanted to work out a deal, maybe elsewhere. I don't know if he visited in Buffalo, but you trade flurry elsewhere. You You free up $7 million in Count state them And suddenly you've got Jack Eichel money You mentioned Alex Tuck. Yeah, I want to ask you about what pieces would be available and I was going to go with prospects. But let's go with tuck first and whether or not he would be available, and if he's one guy, Justin, are there other guys you think that are on the roster? Younger guys that maybe are in the NHL already with talk that could be in consideration for a trade. Sure. I mean, you look at big trades like this, and it's always freaky bases right. It's always the first round pick a player in the prospect, and it's kind of that quality of player and prospect that that makes or breaks the deal and Look at the players on the Golden Knights roster, and I think you've got that Alex talked is is the young player that makes? I think his captive 4.75 million over the next five years or so, so that I think would be really, really enticing to Buffalo. I mean, you can. You can tell me more about what the savers need, but that's the guy that's from upstate New York. He's He is young. He's really He's a top six player that kind of stuck on the third line for the gold mine because they have Mark Stone and Riley Smith, But I think that player that would be very, very interesting. For Buffalo. Other players you look at, you know, Cody glasses had a bit of a disappointing year since he was the Golden I first ever drop. Pick six. Overall, He hasn't quite developed the way that gold might have hoped. But maybe a change of scenery does him well. Peyton credit is more of a prospect. He's a cold night that brought back to the center. He played a couple of games in the NHL. So I think the pieces are there if the Golden Knights were willing to kind of the kind of deplete some of the young young talent on their rosters that could that could satisfy the neighbors. It's not a short discussion if you want to talk about what do the Sabres need just about everything? I mean? I'm not ruling anything out at this point, Justin But But you mentioned credit. So yeah, Let me ask you about the prospects and as long as you know, I was going to have you talked about, you know, the so called guys that would be untouchable. The best players that are prospects they wouldn't want to get rid of and preferably somewhere in this discussion is a center because if they're trading Eichel and they they might be moving on from Sam Reinhart. They need to feed Phil Center spot openings here. Sure, Yeah, Al shut out such a great player out stuff to wear and that there's nothing wrong with that. But you're right. If you're going to trade Jack Eichel and maybe move on from Sam, right hard you're gonna need you're going to need a pivot coming back and Eating crabs would be that guy, and I think that would be if the Golden Knights were willing to include him in the deal. The guy that gets it done. I just don't know if the golden eyes would be willing to include him. This is a team that That is that the older veteran team doesn't have a lot of entry level contract. If you're going to bring in it, a million dollar guy like Jack Eichel, you're going to need younger players on entry level contracts to make the money work just to speak out compliant for the payment. Taking credit of their top prospect. I think he was going to play playoff games before he fractured his job at the end of the regular season. He's 20 years old. He just finished. His junior eligibility will be in the NHL. Somewhere next season. I imagine the golden I hope it's Vegas and and I think that that might be the guy that holds up the deal. I'm Buffalo. I'm asking for crabs and up on Vegas. I'm holding firm on that one. So if Vegas can make the deal happen without him, I think they'd be ecstatic. But you're right other than Krebs. They don't have a ton of center. Uh, prospects that are that are near the NHL level outside of maybe glasses. Still 22. But I'm not sure what his trade value is right now. Anybody in terms of prospects Justin is there anybody outside of center, then maybe you pair with a first round pick or talk or some other combination. Yeah, they've got Brendan person who is he is a winger. He just finished his freshman year at the University of Michigan. He was their first round pick last year. He has terrific slapshot. He's you know, I think he's going to be a real good scorers in the NHL. You have a couple of guys in the American League. Jack Dugan, let me double am scoring two years ago. He's a He's a path first winger, um you've got you've got some guys that can make it work. I just don't know if it's kind of on the the AIDS here prospect that that Buffalo would be open for final thing for you. Let's pretend Kelly McCrimmon is talking to Kevin Adams, right, and they can't agree on Eichel. But the Vegas Golden Knights still want to center. He is a great player, and that's the thing that we, you know, kind of forget when a guy is out of sight out of mind for a while, and obviously, with the injury situation being what it is, you know that's not ideal in terms of getting full value, But I still think that all these other teams are going to be bidding against each other. Just in from Vegas perspective. Would they be interested in Jack Eichel? Let's go from there. I think they definitely be interested. It's going to come down to what the cost is going to be and and basically how much it's going to cost the Golden Knights. You look at their history. They've never been afraid to go out and get that Star player after the first year with Max Patch already that trade deadline, they got Mark Stone. Then it was Robin Leonard. Then it was out the trans alone. So you look at that. That's two wingers, the defenseman and a goalie. So it seems like they're missing that Star Center to go good and Is looking at the way that the Golden Knights have done business since they have operated. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they were if they were making calls for Jack. I go right now. Having said that, Justin, I was curious the pursuit of the pursuit of big name guys and moves like that. Does that come from the very top? Is that Bill Foley? Is he And is he someone who would look at this and tell us GM? Hey, Iculs available. Let's go get this kid. I think it's a combination of ownership in Bill Foley, who is willing to spend he's never been afraid to say Okay, we're going to be a cap team that first year we're going to do everything that we can to bring a cup to Las Vegas as soon as possible. And then they put in Ju two guys at the top. George McPhee, the president of hockey operations, and Kelly McCrimmon, the general manager, who are who are just naturally aggressive in their moves. They did that at the at the expansion draft. They were You know, they wheeled and dealed a little bit before they ever even had a team And then they they went out, and they identified players that they wanted to bring to the Golden Knights and and went out and got him. Whether the captain was an issue or not. They've always seemed to make it work, so I think it's a combination thereof, the owner of the front office of just kind of that that culture they're trying to establish Vegas have established for four years. Now. I'm doing whatever it takes to win hot here. When you when you look at their depth chart right now, how are they? How do they stack up at center? And are they are they in desperate need of adding a guy like Eichel, who I assume would go right to the top of the list. Well, that's that's what makes Vegas connection to Jack Eichel. Interesting is that center is the one position you can look at them and go. You know what they need an upgrade them. They have William Karlsson. He's probably the best center on the game he plays on the second line. Chandler Stephenson, their top line centre, which he doesn't necessarily seem like a top line centre. But this has come to Vegas. He's been in perfectly on that top line with Max Patch ready and Mark Stone. So he has complemented the two star wingers perfectly and has been exactly what they need. But after that centered epistle is better depth is fine. They have Nicholas. What? How much notice of free agent keeping Cola? Sorry. These guys are good, but they're bottom six centers, their role players and, uh, you look at it and you can go. You know what a start Star center would fit in on? This seemed pretty good. And Chairman Stevenson got hurt in the playoffs. You can. You can see how badly center depth personal tonight so Yeah centers the position that they need the most. If they were going to go and make a big boat, Justin, do you think you know They've had obviously a lot of success in such a short time, including a berth in the Cup final. Just lost in the conference finals with what you were talking about at center. That particular position would they view an acquisition of Eichel as the quote unquote final piece to the cup puzzle? I think they might. I think they might have been. They've come close to this kind of this final piece is kind of in the interesting part because it was Mark Stone kind of kind of started things like, okay. Wow. This game is serious. They're going to go out and get Mark Stone. They're going to give him $9.5 million and then it was Robin Lehner, despite them, having Marc Andre Fleury, and then it was Alex Pietrangelo, despite them, having gauge Schmidt. They've always found ways to upgrade wherever they can. But, I mean, you hear the adage so often that star centers of the most important thing in hockey, and that's the one thing that they They don't have. William Karlsson was spectacular. That first season, he scored 43 goals hasn't come close to replicating that sense. So I think if you are looking at puzzle pieces you can kind of you can kind of see him falling in place and see where Jack Eichel fits on the Golden Knights. And if you were to come to the team, I I'm not sure that you can really point. Anywhere on the team and say, Yeah, that's the weak spot. I think he would..

"Get Eichel because they it doesn't really make sense for them to be desperate. The only team you can make that case for is Vegas. No, we had this rumor from Lance Lisovsky of The Buffalo News today on William Ekland. Sounds like the best idea possible for the Sabres. Should they get that third pick from Anaheim? If you trade with the teams that might give you their best offer, you're nowhere near picking a guy like him. You're not picking William Ekland. Vegas is the one team that is starting to become more and more popular and being mentioned a lot. We haven't heard anybody necessarily report there in a nickel, but They've got. They have a need for first line center, and they are an ultra aggressive organization. Signed Paul Stassen into a big free agent deal that didn't work. Let's move his salary off and let's go Trade for Max. Patch ready and let's go Trade for Mark Stone. That's not enough. Let's go get Alex Pietrangelo. Monster free agent contract. Oh, flurries having a down here even though he's the face of our franchise. Let's go trade for Robin Leonard. Give him a big contract. Vegas just They're all in all the time. And you could do one of two things with them. If you can get them to be the aggressive team in this market, because you've got to have one. You gotta have one because either you're going to take that team's best offer. Or two. You're going to use them as a bargaining chip. Because guess what? The nice you can settle into your hotel on yet living at your suitcase playing one night and the next City so that part. It's been nice.
