Warriors deal Russell to Wolves, get back Wiggins

"For people that missed it. The warriors and Timber Wolves agreed on trade us in the Ngelo Russell Jacob Evans in Amari spelman to Minnesota for Andrew Wiggins a a top three protected twenty twenty one first round pick and a twenty twenty two second round pick. I like to steal from Minnesota. I think Karl Anthony towns and de Ngelo. They're obviously good friends. And that's big because towns it's been very frustrated recently but again let's get back to what the warriors got back in return. I'm not a big Fan. I'm not a fan of that that contract but I guess when you're the warriors they're already a situation where a lot of their guys are locked up so I understand that for them. It doesn't matter as much for another team they just Trying to add a guy that can help them on both ends of the floor and the contract isn't as big of a deal for them. But I just think with twenty-three-year-old all-star which is what Russell was he. He was an all star last year. I just don't think that's enough to get back in return. I do like that. They got the draft pick again. Talk Re protected. Twenty twenty. One should be a much better draft twenty twenty based on what the experts are all saying so in top. You're protected. I mean this Minnesota team made it could finish between four and ten could end up being lottery picked so I do think that is very valuable. That's my favorite part of the acquisition here for the warriors I just feel like with wiggins. He's been so disappointing. Maybe maybe they feel like they can help him reach us well potential. We know they've done a very good job of developing guys. They have great leader as a strong culture which may really help someone like wiggins. This could be totally wrong around here. I will admit that maybe wiggins goes there and this is exactly what he needed to reach us and become a better player in guys like Steph and clay and dream on push push him. I just feel like how did they wait until the offseason because they couldn't afford to be patient here. There really wasn't a sense of urgency. I would like to see if there were different offers or different teams that kind of came to the table. I just don't think this is the kind of package that you pounce on when you have a great trade ship and again twenty-three-year-old all-star and no roe pressure to make a move now so but I it is newsday what you're saying. Though had Russell and curry not work together you think that Russell's trade value could have diminished. So I see what you're saying. I'm just not a big Fan. I think that's my problem here. Yeah and I think for Minnesota standpoint It's a very interesting gamble. Because of course they want him as a free agent right and it's always nice to be able to sign a young player like that. If you get the right opportunity comes along but they miss out. It's so let's remember that to make this deal happen. They basically had to ship out Jeff Teague for basically nothing it trade Covington to get some assets assets kinda like sweet things up and they have to wind up trading wiggins out. It's actually make this deal happen with golden state so I don't WANNA say Minnesota gutted their assets but they actually you. You know invest in quite a bit to get Russell. Now the upside to doing that is you're gonNA have a very exciting offensive oriented team where you've got your best players are both all three point shooters with Karl Anthony towns and Diangelo Russel and they should fit together. Great in pick and roll it could pop situations right so for a fan base. That's been through a lot here. Typical era the Jimmy Butler you know You know being upset a few years ago in the long losing streak this year. I think there are some genuine hope and optimism with that pairing between those two guys. But I think my concern is that they really have stripped out a lot of their other proven talent around them and I think that both those guys are just minus defenders and that part it makes me nervous right. Because you know if you're trying to picture these guys is like this inside outside duo right well you want at least one of them to be a plus defender. And I don't think that's it's ever GonNa Happen for either one of those guys and so now it creates some roster challenges where you have to go out and target some other perimeter defenders guys who can help cover up for Russell in towns so that you can at at least be you know average on the defensive end. If you WANNA be a winning team so I guess long story short I think they invested an awful lot of assets. Just make this Russell thing happened and I'm not totally extolled. That he's the right guy to pair with towns but big picture. They did the most important thing which is keep Karl Anthony towns happy. He's their franchise guy he's been disgruntled. You you know for for months now because of all this losing and so I think they do get a short term went out of that.

"alex kennedy" Discussed on The HoopsHype Podcast With Alex Kennedy

"Welcome to hoops hype podcast. My name is Alex Kennedy and joining me today to break down a trade that actually just happened as well. As some other trade deadline news at rumors is my hoops hype colleague franker Beena, Frank what's being great Alex almost during in the morning, but I got a freaking jolts advantage. And like I chunked a coffee after I check my phone for one last time tonight. I see back to back bombs from shops and from wool Zhang Tobias. Harris freaking traded Tobias Harris. This is I love this leak so much it can be three in the morning. And then, you know, NBA nerds like you. And I just rushed our laptops to record a podcast. This league is the best for anyone who missed the trade. The Los Angeles Clippers are trading to bias areas. Bo-bottle Ianovich and Mike Scott to the Sixers for Landry. Shamet Wilson Chandler, Mike Scala and a two thousand twenty first rounder and a two thousand twenty one unprotected first rounder via Miami and then to second rounders. So that's the whole deal. Whenever I saw Tobias Harris is the first jumps out, obviously. Because I mean, the is having a monster year he has been useful about as a possible all stars have because he's playing so well, he's averaging twenty point seven points seven point, nine rebounds, two point seven assists, two threes per game. He's been very efficient to he shooting. Forty nine point three percent from the field for a two point two percent from three point range. He's in the seventy third percentile in isolation scoring and actually this is interesting to me. I tweeted this out because whenever Jimmy Butler got traded to the Philadelphia. Seventy Sixers I and cover the team and spent two days around them. It was ballers first time, you know, getting into Philly meeting everyone and all of that. And one thing that to me was dwelling beat said, we have something now that we never had before someone to create their own shots and make shots off the dribble. And that was right. You know, he was talking about Butler's ability to create for himself, and now with Tobias Harris a guy that has I mentioned is so good ice. Oh situations. And really hasn't been doing this whole career. He's always been a guy that can score for himself, and you know, create buckets. I cover him in Orlando for a while. So I got to know Tobias pretty well. He's the kind of guy that really can carry an offense. But on top of that he's also a guy that knows his role and is a really good locker room guy. You know, you look at Jimmy Butler, and some of the issues that have popped up there where you have a number of these alpha males in Philly and everyone wants the ball. Everyone wants attention in that kind of thing to buys the exact opposite of that to by a quiet guy. He's he's going to be absolutely fine being the third or fourth star on this team. But I think he still such an underrated talent. So this is kind of move that people like you, and I freak out over because we see how good this team could be, you know, whereas a casual fan may here Tobias Harris and think oh, I don't really know what drives game. But how excited are you for this move because I look at it. And I'm wondering, okay, first of all how can the Sixers team be Tobias areas is a perfect fit because he cannot not only score the ball off the dribble. But he is so great at catching shooting opportunities. You shooting forty two point two. Percent from three which is already three points. He was a huge refill already. You add to things that they absolutely needed. He's only twenty six years old. So don't expect any kind of declined. They could resign him the summer. He's at unrestricted free agent this summer. So they could resign him. This is a very very interesting move. And if I'm the if I'm a team like the Toronto Raptors or Milwaukee Bucks Indiana Pacers that was competing with Philly and near the top of the Eastern Conference. I hate this right now. Absolutely. I mean, what a train like just I don't know where to land the guy like Tobias hairs..

"Welcome to the hoop site podcast. My name is Alex Kennedy. And joining me today. Good friend of mine. He's been on the podcast before mock Hamilton do a man I'm doing all right? Allie. Alex, it's been a while. And a man just make sure you let everybody know that when you say good friend, like, we're we're we're like real friends. This guy. You just have your go. You my good friend. Join me like we actually room together during the NBA finals. That's how close we are. We go way back. So we worked together at basketball insiders people who don't know. And then you know, he actually joined me. So we started the NBA wire over here under USA today sports media group, and was one of the first people, I hire he's been crushing it over. There were the with the different NBA wire sites. Now, he writes at the athletic as well. But yeah, we work together. We said we ruined together during the finals, we covered a black events. Together. We go way back, and I knew you Alex since dude start you're like a fourteen year old kid like right again your mom's basement. You know what I'm saying? So we realize. For real real. And yeah, I appreciate you doing this to. So this kind of came together last minute and Moke is a great friend. I call him he'd econ I was trying to schedule a podcast tomorrow on Monday where record this on Sunday night. And I told him away I'm in today. And then within one hour the guy gets on hit grabs his microphone gets ready to go. So that's a real friend. Do you not? We don't just go way. Back your real friends. I appreciate that. I appreciate that too, bro. We have some breaking news, right? As you were getting ready to record this as I said Sunday night Tomko was fired by the Minnesota Timberwolves Adri will announce the and you know, a bunch of other reporters put it out there. So we wanted to kind of break that down, and we're also going to get into some other stuff. We're gonna talk about the first all-star returns. And then Moke is based out of New York. So we're gonna talk about the nets recent strong play and some other stuff there the Knicks, and you know, there rebuild so we'll get into that too. But we want to start with this tip story. Just so you guys know Scott late in will remain the GM and Ryan. Saunders. The flip Saunders. Son is the interim head coach some names have been mentioned already Monty Williams who's currently at assistant in Philadelphia. He had actually been linked to the job previously. Fred Hoiberg who played Minnesota and worked in their front office as vice president of basketball operations. Those are two of the names that have been mentioned in the coaching search so far, but I think the situation, and we want to kind of get into what happened in Minnesota with Tibbs in kind of what went wrong Minnesota is currently nineteen twenty one which puts them a eleven in the Western Conference. They've lost nine of their last fifteen games. They have been struggling recently. There was some talk locally about him being on the hot seat in actually in recent weeks, you know, Mark Stein. And some others had mentioned that he was on the hot seat net. Fred Hoiberg could be an option. So this isn't really new. But today, we actually have the news that he's fired. And I think with Jimmy Butler stuff started going down. You know, there was a lot of talk about their reading is of in the locker room between Tibbs guys, and those were mainly, you know, the veteran. Wins the guys that he had previously co Chicago. And then the young guys now with you know, the team struggling Butler gone. It's pretty clear the wolves aren't going to win a championship with this group. So I think they're prioritizing their young guys want to kind of pump the brakes a little bit and not necessarily focused on win now stuff. And that's not tips as style Tibbs wants to play these guys thirty six minutes at night, and you know, not developed guys and east Boca's on winning right away. So I think it's just a a style difference. And I think that's why we're seeing this move. Now, yet, I think the main thing about it to Alex was, you know, it's like at the end of the day as as an owner, you know, and as a front office executive in the NBA, you know, stability, and what things look like from the outside is so so important, and I think.

New study suggests late-night tweets hurt NBA players' performance

"Now. This one is interesting. So this is from Alex Kennedy NBA at Alex Kennedy NBA, researchers tracked the tweets of one hundred twelve NBA players including LeBron James and Kevin Durant from two thousand nine to two thousand sixteen when players tweeted late the night before a game. They're points per game rebounds per game and field goal percentage. Drop the next day who that is awesome. So base. If you tweet late at night, you suck at your job the next day, and the fact that someone went through all this. That's the worst job ever. Yeah. Would I'd like to see is whether or not it makes a difference. If somebody's tweeting late at night, or if somebody's fading tweets like if you know the person. If you know the persons up late in their liking tweets is at the same effect because I feel like if you're up late tweeting, and you're getting that engagement going you get in the endorphins pumping. That's probably better if you're tween the if you're just sitting there passively like acting like you're not awake and silently, just liking people's tweets. Right. And this is also this one of those things where someone spend a lot of time researching at just so that there was one article on like USA today. Sports that someone clicked on once. Yeah. Well, it's like, okay.

"My name is Alex Kennedy in joining me today is a player who's entering his eighth year in the NBA. He plays for the New Orleans pelicans last year. He averaged a career high twelve point, five points shot fifty one percent from the field forty two point, five percent from three. My guest is each one more. Each one, how you doing man. I'm doing good man. Thanks for having thank you for joining me. We have lots to talk about. This has been a really interesting off season and I wanna get into the different moves that the pelicans made and you know your off season focus. But first, let's start with this. I heard you went to China recently on a promo tour for q four, which is the the company that you have a shoe endorsement with. What was that trip to China lake, a male co not doesn't my second time going there, so I can't do. It's a spec a little bit, but knows pretty cold who knows arouse q. four teams know went the bays, Beijing and Shanghai. I mean it was just two huge cities. I realize how many. People who was there, and I was just how many different I would Sony's was, you know? So marketing do things. One of the most, those just how much they love basketball. I ain't. No. They love best water and and China. That was going crazy. They was. They knew what team you play four and Ono craziest thing like man, he's many people in China, love basketball, so that was that was pretty cool. Yeah, that's awesome. It seems like more and more, you know, every summer we we see these players go go overseas to China and the respect and the phantom there is so impressive and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. What's it been like for you being with Hugh for having your own shoe? I know that's something that was kind of important to you and something that's a lot of fun. What's that? That experience with q. four been like, great. You know, we all grow up as kids know wearing different shows. So much favorite shows run-up was a is like between Hardaway's of course, of course, Jordan's and offering these stuggling down. So very close. Some were when I was like Gary Payton. He's out the glove, Nike on, remember those. So you know, just saying no shoes and you know, girls like man, which I have my own because of, you know, on q. four, you know, because in Tony design shoe and you know how you own logo. That's cool. I mean, that's what every kid during a to play basketball. So there's been pretty good. Definitely. Now we're going to get into some of the transactions that happened..

"Big three were changed. The game. Welcome to the hoop site podcast. My name's Alex Kennedy and joining me today is drew Hanlin who is an NBA skills coach and the CEO of pure sweat basketball. He's worked with many NBA players such as dwelling bead, Gordon Hayward Bradley Beal, Jason, Tatum, Zach, le'veon's, Andrew, Wiggins, Marquel Foltz Moba MBA. You've definitely seen his work before. He's worked with many others. That's just a few guys that he's worked with drew how you doing today? Man, I'm doing well off on. Yeah, thanks for joining me. Whenever I tweeted about this, there were a lot of fans that were very excited because I feel like you impact so many different teams that every fan base has some kind of question for you. So there's a lot of people that had Twitter questions, and we're going to get to get to those at the end some of the fans admitted question. So first of all, I want start with your career and talk about, you know how you got to this point. But before we get to that, though, you tore your meniscus how you feeling and how that hap-. Yes. So I told them and is maybe like a summer ago, and you know, I basically promised myself that last fall. I would get the surgery done when I had three weeks off. The problem is I never have hours off, and so I basically just supposed to in rehab every single day just to make sure that I could kind of, you know, push through, like I mentioned. And then this year on a random day, I end up playing or j. and be back to back one on one. And the next day I woke up and my NIA just completely locked up on me. So I ended up getting some some shots of steroid shots in my me just to tide me over then whatever I find a break in the action during the players training camps, then I'll end up getting the surgery. But for now I'm just kinda toughing it out and and know that I have to be here for all the guys in the LA until they go back to their respective teams. That's also, I mean, not the injury. I'm glad that you're gonna be able to get surgery eventually, but that's some toughness right there. That's a great trainer. I mean, putting off surgery and going out there and training through the pain through the tore meniscus. And that's just crazy and make sure everyone listening never play RJ Barrett and Joel Embiid were on back to back because bad things, bad things happen there. So for people who don't know, can you kind of walk through your journey to this point from your time? Playing point guard at Belmont university to where you're at now, because you're really interesting career path yet. So I mean, it started in high school. I was at the summer be going into my junior in high school. I had a parent which can reach out to me. I was at a at a three quart visibility. There were two games going on to the courts, and then I was ended third coaches working my butt off, and that was known around the area Saint Louis areas where grew up. I was known around the areas from the hardest workers woke up at five AM and and shot. You know, a thousand shots before small every morning. And so the parent, you know, George came up to me and says, I wish my son worked as hard as you. He's like, I could be twenty bucks to put my kid through the same work out. I just watch you that yourself through. And so obviously as a sixteen or seventeen years somebody, you know, offer new twenty bucks an hour workout. You're like head. I'm gonna be good. It's yeah. Do. To do it, but but the anything was helping people. So from me to help local players, I mean also be around the game of basketball, and so I thought it was win..

"Were changing the game welcome to another episode of the hoop site podcast my name is alex kennedy and we are at the eve of the two thousand eighteen nba draft joining me to break down the draft is kohl's wicker an attorney who specializes in covering the nba collective bargaining agreement salary cap and draft you can find all of his work on the step in and make sure you guys are falling him on twitter at kohl's wicker today he's going to join me to preview this upcoming rookie class co how you doing do wellmeant fun time of year getting down to crunch time so thanks for having me on yeah they give joining me it's so much fun this is a great draft class i'm really high on it i i like a lot of these guys i wanna go through some of the top prospects with you but let's start with some of the bigger moves you could see do you think we're gonna see an active draft day in terms of trades are you expecting a lot of moves up and down that seems to be the consensus take i can't remember so much uncertainty especially at the number two overall selection were here in guys from marvin bagley to potentially michael porter at two to a lot of depth this a lot of depth of talent at the top of this class maybe more so than previous classes so you're have some differing opinions on a guy like jaren jackson versus mode bomba is many high level talented guys is you haven't jeff do you have more bearing opinions until you could see guys value these players differently that could cause maybe a land at three to move around a little bit we've heard memphis tied at four and conjunction with chandler parsons in that contract and the dallas at five is apparently pretty aggressive trying to move up for luca doctors type so you might say a little more fluctuation in the draft this year just because there is more top level talent it's not just you know ben simmons brandon ingram one to the seems to extend more to like five or six players at the nba values really highly but also values differently yeah you could get a guy like michael porter jr or as you mentioned mogambo some of these guys you can get toward the end of the top ten and they could be special players that really end up you know having long successful career so it's pretty interesting to see how deep this board is at the top i want i want to get into your big because i think it is pretty interesting over at the step you and you guys have a group big board but you've contributed to it and you tend to agree with where the players are placed so on tier one you're number one prospect in a prospect in this class is luca danni which can you kind of break down why you have to have number one i actually i just didn't article where i talked to eleven guys that played against him and you know overseas games early games and they raved about him talked about how he could be a superstar why do you feel he's the best prospect in his class and why aren't teams you know picking him number one in valuing the same way yeah i think it just we step in tend to differ a little bit from consensus as far as how he rank guys how tear gun is we focus a lot on contributing potentially to winning basketball the top of the draft you see luca donges of course as a playmaking wing maybe as his safe floor a guy who can juggle passenger shoot you can also initiate your offense you can make high level decisions for your.

"Yeah no one wants to be it last bostock now it's true it's were it's like it's it's barely above being a snub are um yeah klay thompson came out and said i really wish they would televise its we can laugh at the guy who it's pick last so he's not helping things he's keith he's really kind of i've been leg really pushing for the the the televised this close and stuff like that is going to make the league kanda hesitant so thanks a lot closer on that and you know i just want to say that liu will got slow snubbed yeah i was saying they usher on twitter i was saying i thought lu will should have been there um you know i think uh i i i was surprised he didn't make it in my thing i've always said this um i said this to a few years ago whenever jamal crawford was having a monster year a few years ago and jr smith had a crazy year if i'm a coach because the kochis lucky reserves i would put in a guy that's having a great season as a sixman because just for just for selfish reasons i think it makes it easier to tell one of your really good players hey we're gonna move into the bench and play you as a sixth man and hey look you know you can still have great individual accomplishments not only can you went to expand year lu will was an allstar at a sixman so doesn't limit you at all like i i think that's a that's something to as a coach i'd want to be over point you in intel players so you know as a coach i'm surprised strategy wise they have in just but one of those guys in the game for their own reasons you i mean like the idea at milch that would help i i just don't understand how year since you seen this that since december twenty sec right yeah it's ridiculous his first in the league and scored first in force for game first and 3pointers may first report percentage i mean like first in thirty point games yeah he was nba player that he lasco deal golds may or hide westbrook and second in free throws vapor hajime.

"Before we can really jug this cav team obviously like they're going to make a move they're talking about george hill you know i think there's been rumors route deandre jordan lou williams uh you know those guys would help a ton i think uh so the cavs are gonna be okay but uh that they rachel walker to they were they were linked to cambe the there were a few teams like to come back i think the bucks for some reason i don't understand that one salad they is they already traded yeah so they they they were linked to cambe detroit was linked the cambe and i think the cavs were to michael jordan motoring came out and said we're not trading kemba walker unless we get an allstar back and he said like kawhi leonard he mentioned kawai by name obviously that's not happening uh so kemba may not be on the move that could be that could be jordan just saying that to get leverage and um you always have to say stuff like that when you're an executive but uh for him to come out and make a statement that all you know they may not move kemba we don't know um that that remains the be seen uh there are two players on the board uh i believe it is my pick i'm gonna go i they do this lies cause yeah however the last players artist hurler it sucks to them yeah but like i mean i think rachel nichols rob a great point like you know we've all played pickup games like this is something that like children can deal with on the court like picked last it your nba allstar everyone knows like okay your great urine allstar yet you're an allstar me no matter what to round your pick dinner where your pact you're still on allstar you're playing in the game you're getting a bonus from you to sneak or deal like you you know you're you're they're still light then people lied when you play people go to their place at yeah fairly.
