"Welcome back into the copes and Crowley podcast. I think I don't carry. We talked about this last week. You being a big football guy? Do you get the mean It's different for you? Because spring training for you is like work like you're getting on a plane. We're actually we're recording this on Thursday morning. February, 11th and Carrie just told me actually, during the break there. He's about to jump on a plane. Go down to Scottsdale. Did you think you'd be flying to Arizona? Dude s so I made it. I actually made a critical mistake, Adam. And this is when you were planning spring training. It was initially in January, and it was OK. Everything is going to start on time. So I buy my flight for you know the weekend before pitchers and catchers you're supposed to report because when pitchers and catchers report Writers get access to the ballpark. We get in there. We're all set to go. And then you find out that maybe they push spring training back and I'm thinking, Oh, maybe I'll have to push my flight back. I don't really have a hotel yet, So we'll figure this out that I find out that okay. It's all starting on time. But writers actually aren't let in for an extra week this year. So the first day that I can be its Scottsdale Stadium isn't until February, 22nd. But the Giants first team workout Today is February 11. So I am going down there. I might just come back. I might come back after the weekend, and we will see, you know, may can't spend enough time in Scottsdale and so we'll see. We'll see. I don't have my hotel reservation starting. So, as you know, I went to Arizona State living off a few friends couches for the week. And reporting on baseball from the Scottsdale area is kind of my story right now. It sounds to me like this is not this is not a work trip. It sounds to me like you're cursing down may have a feeling this is a work trip. This is the work grinding away. When you get there I will be. I will be. I got a ton of interviews scheduled. All I needed just borrow a friend's wife. I said, Well, let's see if we can get some answers because you said to me that there's so many questions around this team, and there are and you know, baseball prospectus puts out there thing with You know what you project the Giants to fit. Shit. I think they had him it at like, 76 wins or something. And yes, I've seen 74 75 76. I have not seen anything in the eighties. So far by the way, can I Can I just make a statement quickly here, and that's the 76 or 77 Win team is the most frustrating team in baseball toe like the 2000. I don't know. Can I offer you like a 2008 San Francisco giants like You mean my favorite San Francisco giants of all time or, you know, come on Jorge Castillo and third base and s. So it was one Benji Molina was hitting his prime. Yeah. Big money in little money, And I want to say problem may have come up the next year, you know, nine Hot? Yes, Yes, I think so. He may have been end of 2008 and had too many at bats to win Rookie of the year in 2009, because he would have been that guy that year. Can I offer you like a Ryan rolling her? Maybe making a new appearance? By the way, That was Brian Bo Cock. The starting shortstop that might have been the year of the Brian Bo Cock was the starting shortstop Kevin Franzen gets hurt in spring training. Omar Vizquel was hurt in spring training, and so they go to the singlet. Shortstop at but you know what came out of that? Oh, a team and in my memory, 08 No. Nine was big for pieces that led to the bullpen run for the World Championships. Sergio Romo. They had to find Guillermo Mota was a guy They brought over in, like, Oh, wait or 09. Danny Santana was around. So serious mottoes your remember you're remembering some guy's better than anybody. How about Alex Hinshaw? That's a lefty. That's a guy who I loved him, said that Bugs Bunny curveball anyway, do lots of questions around this team who's gonna be the closer? Whose baton against Who? In which line up to you. You came up with syriza of kind of like mailbag questions right about about what we should be focused on for this year. Yeah, I've been focused on this writing for the Bay Area News group this week. Bunch of different giants topics that were thrown out there to fans getting their reaction and I want to ask you some of the most burning ones and, of course. The most important place to start when Farhaan Side, he said that the biggest offseason acquisition for the Giants was not actually any players that they've signed or traded for, but his Buster Posey That leads to the question. What can the Giants realistically expect from Buster Posey after he will go 550 days between starts if he starts on opening day for San Francisco. See, this is Ah, I mean, that's probably the biggest question period and not so much like. I don't even think that's the biggest question like like relevant to success for the Giants, But I do think, if poses good or opposes the Posey. We were used to seeing for so many years. Obviously, the Giants are in a much better situation. I think the better question is like What are they looking for? Like you can have your expectations for like we need him to to put up these numbers. But what does he need to do to help this team be successful? He's gonna play Gold Glove defense is just what he does behind the plate. I don't know how much run he's gonna get it First. There's a lot of right handed bats. There's there's no reason for Buster Posey to pick up the first base and spent this year. No reason whatsoever. So the question I have is, Does he end up in a situation like we're watching Warrior basketball right now? Second warrior reference of the pot by the way today. Steph Curry Looks like he's more fresh than we've ever seen. And Draymond Green looks pretty good, too. He had a four game stretch over the last week or so we had 50 assist his legs look good. I think there's something to be said about guys in the N B, A who play year after your deep into the playoffs, putting a lot of extra miles on those legs. The same can be said about Buster Posey in the postseason. For that stretch of years, he comes up in 09 sure, at the end within 2010 in May deep into the postseason, What a World series 12 the exact same thing 14. Same thing, 16 the same thing into the playoffs and all of those times. I think you said this last week outside of the Grand Slam off from that Wait. Oh, so there's not a whole lot of offensive calling cards for Buster Posey in the playoffs, So it's all about how he handles the staff how he handles the defense, how he calls pitches and maybe unrivaled by anybody in the game today outside of Yadi Molina. In ST Louis Buster is the best catcher of this generation. So for me, it's about where he's hitting in the lineup. What are your expectations for the offensive production? So I don't know if he's gonna be like Is it gonna be Steph Curry fresh because he's had this time off, or is he gonna be that hip is just is just still not what it used to be. You know what I mean? I'm really Yeah, I'm really fascinated because I believe it was. Nick Hundley, who said back in 2017 when he was first playing with the Giants came into spring training and said after Hundley had played it course field in Colorado that if Buster Posey was a Colorado rocky, he would win the batting title every year. He is that type of a hitter. He is that type of knowledge plate discipline. Ability to go the other way work with what pictures are giving him and he just wasn't healthy enough in 2017 2018 2019 to really do much damage And now that he will have this year and a half off in between serious baseball competition that's putting stress on his body. Will he return to that level? Where you know he is a 300 hitter? He is a 3 10 guy. We know he's not gonna hit 20 home runs. That's just not happening. He probably won't play enough to hit 20 home runs. Will he catch 100 games? Well, it'll only be 81 games. How quickly will Joey Bart working the next I'm really fascinated..

Kevin Franzen Danny Santana Draymond Green Sergio Romo Nick Hundley Omar Vizquel Adam Guillermo Mota Alex Hinshaw Benji Molina Jorge Castillo 2017 Steph Curry Hundley 2009 Brian Bo Cock Joey Bart 81 games Yadi Molina 100 games

If they've got him going back to backs. It'll be interesting to see Adam. I want to move on to pressing question Number two, and that is speaking of the lineup. Speaking of where Buster Posey's hitting. I do believe it'll be much lower this year than it was under Bruce Bochy is the Giants lineup better? Against right handed pitchers or left handed pitchers. Keep this in mind against righties. You'll see Brandon Crawford, Brandon Belt, Tommy Lost Ella Alex Dickerson. Maybe new trade acquisition. Lamont weighed against lefties. It'll be Donovan Solano, Donnie Barrels. Wilmer Flores, Darren Rough, Austin Slater and Marie She. O D. Bon..

"Nobody excites you or takes the roof off a building and he's doing it without fans in the building is Steph Curry. So he is on an absolute terror right now. The way shooting right now, 48.7%. Overall 42.9% from 3 92.9% from the free throw line, and he's averaging 29.6 points a game. It's a rare thing to go 50 40 90 right with the 50 40 90 Club to 50% from the field 40% from 3 90% from the free throw line steps one of eight guys in league history to do it, and the last time he did it that unanimous M V p season, So we're in the midst of something special right here. I know every night. It seems like we're here and Steve Kerr say This is The best. I've seen him play, but there's something to be said about that People can say Yeah, well, you should be putting up big numbers with with guys that are on this roster, with Brad Wanamaker stepping out of bounds for no reason what I make. It was driving me nuts last night. By the way, I did a little dive on Wanamaker stats, and I don't wanna I don't wanna tear down Brad Water maker. I went off on a little rant last night with Murph when the Warriors were still kind of in the thick of it before the Steph Curry 16 point, third quarter 16 of the first act. By the way, there's like 16 in the 30 just went nuts on the On the San Antonio Spurs last night. Um, but Wanamaker as a right now, he's like averaging a career low and field goal percentage, three point percentage, and it's It's by a lot. He's low on three point percentage by like 14%. He's shooting 10% below his career average for field goal percentage. Or he's his best See. Excuse me his best season average or normal average for a field goal percentage. He's also attempting 43 pointers again he's ever attempted before, which is not a much higher clip. But still when your percentages are worse, and you're shooting more, it could be a little frustrating Everybody on the Warriors roster last night with a positive plus minus or when he played, I should say, though there were some some rough shooting next, Kelly, you berate junior 12 points on 14 shots, but 10 rebounds for him. Draymond Green had an incredible four game stretch here as far as he distributor goes double digit assists in all four of these Texas Games for Draymond Green. He had six points last night as well to go with his 11 assists and seven rebounds. So warriors win this 1, 13 and 12 Is their record to into in Texas. Got to feel pretty good about that. Considering Eric Paschal came back last night. So you played small ball the entire seat the entire four game run, right? You go to into stay above 500. You feel pretty good about that. And a couple off days off today and off tomorrow before they pick it back up. Excuse me off today. They pick it back up tomorrow against the Orlando Magic is they started four game. Home stand. They gotta feel pretty good to not having his fuel markets. Aldridge in that back to back against the Spurs act. It's just a fact. Yes, absolutely effect. So you still had, by the way, James Wise, Mr Louder with the Friends sweatshirt on last night. That was kind of funny Still, so get these guys back at these guys out there getting healthy and Steve Kerr did say after the game, he thinks that there Ask him about how he thought the team handled the small ball, And obviously, he praised him for for how they played. He looked like he was going nuts a couple of times last night with the rebounding that they were allowing under the hoop and the Warriors were struggling early in the game at making the layups that it seems like they were just struggling. Run around the rim. But again, you got Steph Curry on the floor. He can carry you. For just a little bit so He thinks they're playing well, he said. He's proud of how they played, considering they didn't have a center coming into this serious. So this this four game Texas swing, so they come home now four game home stand chance to get right. They've played much better at home this year at Chase Center than they have on the road. I think they're not five and seven on the road, so 500 team's still looking to put a little street together are these warriors They lost three or four before this one, but they got right last night won 14 91 the final over the San Antonio Spurs, 13 and 12 is the record on the other side. We're gonna talk to Greg on, and he covers the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the athletic going to pick his brain about what's going on entitled Town told me yesterday. Actually, that they're calling it Coming a champ Obey. That's what they're calling it down in Tampa, He got the Stanley Cup. You got your you got your Super Bowl title. And of course, they want a American League pennants American League Championship. I don't know Champa Bai anyway, pick his brain a final thoughts on unruly what happened the NFL season and then we'll do a little sound survey. We'll mix in some warriors as well as Some baseball sound. Yesterday, Giants make another acquisition, a left handed pitcher, a bullpen arm, Jake McGee coming over from the L. A Dodgers. That's actually pretty good signing. I think I'll be good from the left side, Terry Crowley said. Likely to fill that that Tony watching role. I know it's not a move that super excites anybody or really get you moving in your loins. But you it's a move that I think is going to be important. And I think Giants fans need to understand or should understand. Maybe more than anybody that bullpen arms can win Houston Championships as we've seen 10, 12 and 14 It's important to stop that bullpen and then Sprinkle in some other pieces. These were like acquisitions the Giants made right before they went on their run, right. You think about when Jeremy Affeldt came over and see the sign? Definitely 2000 and eight right? He's not here with, like Alex Hinshaw, serious mottoes and Sergio Romo. They started building these guys up before before the run happened. So anyway, I'm not saying they're there yet, But an acquisition by the Giants will get you a little bit of the sound regarding that, and we'll talk some baseball after we talked to Greg Arm and who covers the Tampa Bay Bucks for the athletic. All that is coming up. It's a Wednesday morning. It's a hump day. You're in the lead out spot. KNBR, one of 45 and 6 80. You're listening to these sports leader. "Way a September goes when your your team is not really in contention what is starting to take strides toward the next wave of baseball for your program for your organization the giants last night showing that they do have some pieces towards towards that transition good morning to you happy Wednesday to Adam Copeland with you in the leadoff spot as we are every weekday morning I got up there last night actually what was fashion my buddy chasing one see Johnny Cueto throw in we saw Johnny Cueto throw look pretty damn good actually the Johnny Cueto of old yesterday on with Murph and mac going type was joking about how how long into the game it would take Johnny Cueto to do this to me I think by the second here maybe the third here he was out there she made he certainly was doing the thing where he like winds up and then turns his back to your he was doing that sort of the coil act I kind of think of it as like the idea of a Kevin brown coil member you center all the way around not as drastic as no mo them of course coming all the way over his head and then turning himself all the way around before young coiled even to move him out a little bit of that with this is rock in turn with his hip and his his big delivery but Johnny Cueto sharp last night goes five innings we get a lot I felt pretty good about getting a chance to pay attention to some giants ball primarily last night like it was the focal point of my of my evening in that there was no NFL though on my way to the ball park again appearing on my phone and of course the Antonio brown saga continues you will have to get into that if you are already aware Antonio brown accused of sexual assault against a former trainer of his I will talk about that later in the show because it's gonna have an impact on what continues to go on with him his career the NFL whether or not he play Sunday what these implications are us we do have some sound to talk about or we're here for Adam Schefter of of ESPN as far as what yeah he's take away is but such giants baseball some exciting stuff first even vote yesterday four RBIs you drive. and for the giants five runs so you get a five to four women and you start to see them try to piece together the bullpen now in sort of which young pieces are going to be parts of the future and I sort of think back to you know at we make a big deal at the core for writing in that they were so instrumental in the giants three World Series and the only one who's home grown I decided I corps for you wouldn't include Brian Wilson in that Santiago because here comes over after being with the eighties of course hobby Lopez gets traded over a pirate in a red Sox I am in Germany after the pitch so much in the big leagues I in his career Reds Rockies and and Royals but I think about like Sergio Romo was extremely instrumental part of that bull pen and the giants may not have gotten to a point where surgery Roma was a guy they just called up to take a look at I had they not been so bad in two thousand and eight in two thousand and nine I will two thousand nine I just improve a little bit with eighty eight wins but feel back to two thousand eight eight in the first part of nine the giants for kind of sorting through some of these bull pen arms you got a good look at a good portion of these guys I I mention them frequently because they were they were the guys who were here right before the giants went on their World Series runs and those guys I'm talking about jazz a jackass guys like Alex Hinshaw the lefty who who had sort of a Bugs Bunny curve ball I've got a look at that and like Danny center and I think who was up around the same time here Momota got here and then they bring up in cirrus mottos all these guys were on the giants roster at some point in two thousand eight or nine and they were both put arms who were just as the giants wanted to see if they could pitch at the big league level hello Jonathan sensors you can make a case was one of those guys who of course had a lot of potential they were excited about but they had to make sure he was going to be an element of this bill paid or or try to see if he could stick before they started to build around the pieces that they had well they're starting to do that now when they're starting to see which areas of strength you can plug guys into in find success with their. I think you're gonna see a guy like Fernando about come back next year not to say that he's a a youngster but he's a guy who's capable of pitching at the big league level from the left side he was a triple A. all star and then you've got guys like Sam Colorado I think they're excited about their he got knocked around a bit last night giving up two runs himself. then you've got a couple these other guys John Anderson where do you go with a guy like John Anderson or Gallichan anti swaras I'm never gonna hissing sound from Steven vote because vote may be the perfect guy to of who to have helped usher in this next wave of of transition of giants young pitchers because he started this year down in trouble lay here to work with some of these guys before they got to the big league level together so it's almost like you're you're super minor leaguer who is down there helping kids in the first part of the season that was a piercer ushering in through the back end of the season and he's doing damage of the plate as well well he had some comments about Sean Anderson we know he was a reliever I wanna go Miami or whatever was reliever in Miami I wouldn't want to be a starter they converted to a starting pitcher but it's starting to look more and more like this guy could be much more comfortable as a closer he gets his first save last night it's a four outs and actually and actually sister from Steven vote right here talking about John Anderson in the back end of his pen hi did outstanding.

"Talking to talk to somebody saying, what are you gonna do? Some steam fun man that we're all about tonight. I blame the warriors. The blame game lighten the mood. A little bit. People come to me after the show is paulie. Mac your little heart on Mark Milan-San today, why were you, so tough on the Lance and I just say tonight, the blame somebody for the for the Durant injury? Can you started off? Well, right, Mark. Then all of a sudden he's around Mark Vallance paulie MAC of the National League. Coming around governor up. Anyway, go ahead and nobody. He talked about how the Lanston he asked me about why he thrift certain pitch. In a certain situation. He said, I watch hitters to see what their weaknesses are when they're facing other guys when they have zone with doesn't seem like they're getting a pitch how they react after a guy. Throws a curveball and a certain count. He said, I'd never really thought about that approach as reliever. So as a starter he's trying to apply that. So I think Anderson is a very smart pitcher. Yeah. I think because he was told we talked about this earlier that he was reliever. He's made the adjustment to add pitches to his arsenal of to figure out how to set guys up because we used to see them do this a lot, where he'd throw fastball splitter, fastball changeup, the first time through. And then the second time through he break out the curve ball. And then you'd see him throw show thrown different looks. Yeah. We saw we saw Tyler actually do to start to go, where I thought he looked okay? Didn't throw the curveball till the second time through the line of those probably is best start so far. Right. The whatnot this last one one, because he didn't go deep in that what either. But I think we're seeing we talked about this flashes, a brilliant. Yep. I wear he does. Have the stuff. So Anderson to me. I, I like him. I like what we're seeing so far. No is weird about de rod to going back to him for a second. Is that if you remember he pitched in the home opener this year, which was a really big day? Boches final home game a home opener rather, and the extended standing ovation for boat and derived that was the first time we saw derive just kind of unravel. He was a mess like right out of the gate that day nerve. I think those nerves a little bit. I think I'd be willing to bet he was to whether he'd never acknowledged that but he probably was crooked centered a million times opening day. We'll throw anybody off their rhythm because you gotta stand around a wait. You're ready to go. Here's another ceremony. There is a fly over your normal routine is heavily disrupted Tampa Bay rays. Yeah. Right. Now, if you're you're like who the hell my traditional rival the race? They're coming in blue and teal. I don't know. But anyway, I hope and expect to see him back in the rotation at some point as well. D- rod Kazan already come out. It's coming, it's coming up. Is it coming up? Yeah, we're talking about that. Yeah. I mean if all three of those guys can kind of get it happened in at the same time suddenly, you're kind of looking at hopefully, I mean hopefully the same way, Lynch dekum and Kane and Sanchez really got core of those young guys coming up. Maybe this could turn into something positive. Not maybe not at that level, Cy Young level perfect game level. But Anderson, beady de rod like you see pieces. They're out there. And if again, come together man, maybe the future, it would start shaping up about the down years. And I was hoping came along, we were going to get to ask him 'cause when he first joined the giants, they had a young crop of pitchers that they started to kind of groom Sergia Roma was one of those guys name Cirrus Mahto. She didn't stick around had a guy named Alex Hinshaw, who was good lefty, who didn't hang around for that long. But they were cycling through guys to see which pieces would fit. Right. Which would stick, and I think that helped lay a foundation for where they went Brian Wilson was one of those cats. Yeah. Be. We gotta bring BBC back to the show. We last time he was in town. He was I. Forget what the occasion was. He came for the wall of fame. Sarah. Or he came for a reunion, or a wall of fame something or other last. But he'll he'll yeah. Did he get on the wall? Yeah. He did. And we through the word out to his people. We said, hey, we want him on the show, and he couldn't do it because he was on his way back out of town. But he said, next time he's in town, he's coming on. So in the machine. Got the leather mask Pat burrow. I don't want to bring up any tabouli stuff. Yeah. Exactly. Of walking around behind the camera. Shut the whole thing. I don't know. Man. Have you seen? I don't want to go deep on this, because it's extremely dark and disturbing. But have you seen them? The eight millimeter, of course, the cage. Yeah. That'd be seen. That's a snuff, film. Yeah. That's that was a crazy movie. That's exactly right about that. I knew that it is. Well, me too. She goes, of course, I know every night what do we talk in snuff yet. What do you guys need? No. What? That's where the machine was kind of extracted from that together during.
